Coffee Stellski Coffee Bar & Café. Kooky, colourful, and the best damn cuppa in Cape Town. BY THEA BECKMAN
T
he brainchild of proprietor Megan Kritzinger, Stellski Coffee Bar & Café is exactly what happens when you channel your whole heart into something you love. In the case of these truly delightful Cape Town establishments, the focal points of this love are good coffee, food, people, and a Staffordshire Bull Terrier called Stella. Think kooky, kaleidoscopic, a giant panting dog mural on the wall, and an unsinkable vibe. Oh, and, naturally, delicious food and ethically sourced, Fairtrade coffee that's to die for. In fact, every cup is made exclusively from 100% arabica beans from African producers in Ethiopia, Burundi, and Tanzania. Heck, even the music at Stellski has attracted happy Google reviews from patrons. Seriously, they're awesome!
SMALL SHOPS WITH A LOTTA SOUL
There are two locations: the original Stellski Coffee Bar being in Loop Street, right in the beating heart of Cape Town, and Stellski Café having just opened its doors in June 2021, in the gentrified industrial suburb of Woodstock. Both have the same schtick: they're small shops with a whole lotta soul. So much soul, in fact, that it literally spills out onto the pavement in the rich and intoxicating smell of roast coffee and fresh grilled cheese sandwiches, amongst other delectables that range from chocolate croissants and all-day breakfasts to lunches of savoury pies, freshly made soups, and toasties.
DARK AND BROODY IS SO LAST CENTURY
At Stellski Coffee Bar & Café, colour is in, and broody is out. When Megan was asked what inspired the exuberant aesthetic, she said: "I found that most coffee companies had the same moody, dark, masculine appearance. It's like they were being rated on how trendy the barista's
