Hello, Miami!

We’re so thrilled

that Spotlight on Art Basel Miami Beach is here! After an incredibly successful inaugural season in the Hamptons last summer, where we launched as the first luxury print publication to target millennials Out East, Miami felt like the perfect place to mark our expansion into Florida. Specifically, during what’s always been one of my favorite events of the year—Art Basel!

This week is truly the kick-off to the most exciting time of year in Miami. The parties, art shows, incredible shopping, the food—there’s no shortage of things to do and see all Basel long. And of course, let’s not forget about all that sunshine. Those of us from NYC are definitely excited for that extra dose of vitamin D.

It was at Art Basel that I purchased my first piece of art; the place where I developed many friendships with entrepreneurs from around the globe; and where I truly leave feeling inspired every year. It’s a destination that attracts some of the world’s finest creators—even beyond art.

Speaking of creators, one of the most popular creators of the moment, Foodgod, is our cover star! This Miami talent reaches millions through posting all things food, restaurants, and lifestyle experiences. Miami is his playground, and it’s been fun to watch his journey since we originally got to know him on Keeping Up With the Kardashians. Foodgod is the ultimate brand-builder, and there’s a lot to learn. Read our exclusive interview with him on page 28. Spotlight is here to guide you on what’s hot right now across art, fashion, culture, and more. We have an epic range of contributors, also known as our “Spotters,” to share their take on some of the hottest topics. Art advisor Kipton Cronkite offers his top tips for developing your own art collection; skincare legend Dr. Barbara Sturm, who has a store in the Design District, shares how to keep your skin in tip-top shape; Brendan Fallis serves up all the tea on brand-building and how he’s transitioned from DJing; man-abouttown and editor Peter Davis recaps the best parties of Basels past in anticipation of what’s to come this year; and dating expert and We Met At Acme podcast host Lindsey Metselaar breaks down how to meet cute in Miami. We also make some connections to the Hamptons, because we know so many of you summer there. PLUS! Peruse our feature on artists to watch; our favorite fashion picks to keep you in style; and our roundup of the hottest Miami hotels with American Express Business Platinum. We hope you enjoy our range of content, and we can’t wait to see you reading our new issue all around Miami! Snap pics of our cover and tag us @spotlightxmagazine. See you at Art Basel!

DREAMING OF THE HAMPTONS?

Saunders real estate broker Vincent Horcasitas shares why the Hamptons is the perfect destination for art collectors and aficionados to purchase a home.

Vince, why should buying a home in the Hamptons be on the radar of Basel attendees?

It’s a phenomenal asset. A Hamptons home is not just a beautiful place to live—it’s an incomeproducing property, and it’s a world-class investment. People who purchase art at Art Basel understand the value and importance of owning assets of this caliber.

How do you work with clients to purchase a home suited for their art collection?

I have a lot of friends in the art world here. [Artist] Brendan Murphy is a dear friend of mine, and I like to rely on people like him and others for their expertise in displaying their pieces

of art throughout their house. I’m always amazed at what gorgeous art can do to impact the value of a home. Art is truly amazing, if you have the right eye for it. If you display it correctly, art can dramatically increase the value of a home.

Tell us about the robust art community Out East. The Hamptons art community is tremendous. It’s a big part of life in the Hamptons. Every village has multiple art galleries, and every summer the Hamptons offers huge art events where galleries from all over the world present the work they represent to the public.

Any final thoughts?

In the Hamptons, homes themselves are pieces of art. So much thought, care, and attention are put into the construction of the properties here, just walking or driving through the different hamlets can feel like you’re walking through a painting. T

5 TIPS TO BUILDING AN ART COLLECTION

Art advisor Kipton Cronkite has been helping clients build their art collections for more than a decade. But building a successful one can be daunting, while being fun at the same time. Here, Cronkite offers a few things to look out for

For more than 15 years, I’ve been helping clients build their art collections. Questions always emerge, such as: What should I buy? Will the current and future value increase? Will my friends like the art or make fun of it? Clients are also faced with questions around competing buyers, valuations, and how to win a piece and not severely overpay. As an art advisor, I help navigate the art world to build a collection that reflects the energy and spirit of each homeowner. Over the years, I’ve noticed five areas that stand out the most for collectors seeking quality art.

3. FEAR Collectors often fear being misunderstood by their family or friends when buying the art that speaks to them most. Questions arise, such as: What do the artworks say about me as an individual? When you consult with an advisor, carefully consider aspects of your life that reflect your values and personal desires. Facing the fear of going with your gut, instead of the negative of missing the vibe, will bring confidence into the energy of what brings you joy. Fear can cause one to acquire art that doesn’t satisfy for the long-term, so the faster one allows the personal connection to shine through, the better.

listen to your gut and let it lead you to new discoveries. Don’t think too hard! Of course, the price of art varies, so if your goal is to find artists at specific price points, either hire an advisor or ask the pricing ranges upfront before you get your heart set on something out of your budget.

1. TIME Searching for art takes time. It’s also personal. Considering the number of pieces of art in the world, curating a collection that will both complete the beauty of one’s home and hold value in the future doesn’t happen overnight. It’s important to help collectors understand the emotional tie and purpose they wish to convey and have a deep understanding for how others will connect to individual pieces.

2. RELATIONSHIPS Most people don’t realize how tightly knit the art world is, which can make

it difficult to navigate the massive flow of art found online. During the process, I provide introductions to galleries and nurture relationships that have been cultivated for many years. It’s also important to work with someone who’s connected to the emerging art scene to keep tabs on fresh young art stars.

4. NOT KNOWING WHERE TO START It’s normal to not know where to begin in the collecting process. As you’re looking at art (online, in galleries, or at Art Basel), listen to your inner voice of what grabs your attention. For clients looking to collect for value as an investment, having an advisor who can do the research and due diligence is critical. For those who want to create themes, go for art that excites you. Once you get a sense of the style of art you love most,

5. VALUE New and experienced art collectors are faced with the same questions: Will my art hold value? And if so, how long does it take to appreciate? Of course, this answer depends on a variety of factors, but the question I always ask my clients is what value the art brings to them in their current state—not in a year, or five years, but right now. What value is it bringing you now by being in your home? While some collectors buy art for an investment, most acquire based on an emotional connection. Personally, I admire emotional connection over a pure investment. Having a physical reaction of happiness and joy is priceless and pleasing, but if value is your primary focus, get an advisor to help you! T

AND…SCENE!

If you’re not at Art Basel for the art, we know you’re here for the parties! This event has been the site of some epic shindigs over the years. Let’s take a look back at a few of the hottest hangouts of all time!

Art Basel in Miami is all about the scene. Art has taken a backseat to the luxury fashionbrand parties, decadent latenight soirées, and scoring the right table at the right restaurant (book early for prime real estate at hot spots like Casa Tua, JeanGeorges Vongerichten’s Matador Room at the Edition and Francis Mallmann’s Los Fuegos at the Faena). This year will be no exception. Sure, it’s smart to check out the official art fair (where I spotted Beyoncé and Jay-Z one year checking out the Hirsts, Warhols, and Basquiats for sale) and satellite fairs like SCOPE Art Show and Design Miami. But most people fly to Miami to mingle with the big boldface names at all the hot parties.

For a taste of what to expect this year, let’s run down some of the most memorably fabulous events of Basels past.

I attended the Desigual “Love Different” themed show at the iconic Temple House a few years ago expecting the Spanish fashion label (think a Catalan Esprit) to show some cute jeans and trendy Bohemian tops. Instead, Desigual and Barcelonabased performance artist Carlota Guerrero staged “El Beso,” a veritable orgy with models stripping off their Desigual garb to reveal skin-toned body suits.

Models of all shapes, colors, and genders grinded and made out for what seemed like hours. To cap it all off, Madonna’s daughter Lourdes Leon was the star attraction, proving that her mother’s infamous Sex book (much of which was shot

by Steven Meisel in Miami) definitely influenced her career moves. After the show, the DJ formerly known as the Black Madonna (now the Blessed Madonna) spun for the crowd, which included cast members from the racy Spanish teen soap Elite. A video I took of the Desigual flesh-fest went viral on Instagram (before being removed!) and ended up on the front page of The New York Post with the headline: “Oh, my Lourdes.” Fashion is king during Basel and last year Chanel celebrated the 100th anniversary of its iconic No. 5 perfume with a light show on the beach at the Faena. In addition to a 600-foot-high No. 5 bottle, more than 500 drones spelled out CHANEL across the night sky. Adding to the show, Chanel enlisted artist Es Devlin to create “Five Echoes,” a massive installation sculpture surrounded by a forest in Jungle Plaza. The circular sculpture measured 100 feet in diameter with walls up to 33 feet high and also featured sound, light, and scents so you felt like you were trapped in a Chanel maze dreamed up by Coco herself.

Not every hot event at Basel happens at night. The Cultivist Global Arts Club always hosts a lunch that is one of the hardest invites to snag. Last year, they toasted British abstract artist Tahnee Lonsdale at The Setai with guests including Waris Ahluwalia, Hassan Pierre, and Jennifer Tilly, among others.

Which parties will be the most talked about of 2022? We’ll just have to wait and see! T

I’m so excited to be a Spotlight contributor for the magazine’s inaugural Art Basel issue. I’ve always loved Miami, and now that I have my own spa and boutique in the Miami Design District, I love spending time here more than ever. And with the arrival of Art Basel, it’s the perfect time to get your skin in its best shape ever.

I grew up in a small mountain village in Germany. I was interested in science and nature and decided that I wanted to be a doctor by the age of 4. I studied sports and medicine at the Heinrich Heine University in Düsseldorf, Germany, specializing in orthopedics and helping repair injuries in athletes and aging arthritic joints with anti-inflammatory proteins. I translated this science into aesthetics, and it later became the inspiration behind my first skincare line.

My collection is a 360 approach to skincare. Over the years, I have made it my mission to create solutions for every concern, including supplements and haircare to address skin from the top down and inside out.

24 HOURS OF GLOWING SKIN

A STURM A.M.-to-P.M. Skincare Routine

Twice a week, I’ll either use the Facial Scrub Cream or Enzyme Cleanser in the shower on my face and body to remove dead skin cells, boost circulation, and encourage skin renewal. The rest of the time I use my Body Wash.

I apply my Balancing Toner immediately after showering, then Hyaluronic Serum and the Better B Niacinamide Serum. Next, I’ll apply my Super AntiAging Face Cream.

At night, I’ll use my Super Anti-Aging Serum and my Night Serum after, which boosts the skin’s renewal process and counteracts dryness and stressed skin, and my ExosoMetic Face Serum, which supports the skin’s own natural rejuvenation mechanisms for youthful-looking skin. Next, I’ll apply my Super Anti-Aging Night Cream and Lip Balm.

If you’re looking to start a STURM routine, it needs to only include my cleanser, an exfoliator twice a week, my hyaluronic serum, and my moisturizer. You can build out your routine with other products tailored to your specific concerns later. T

DR. STURM’S FAVORITE THINGS TO DO IN MIAMI

I’ve spent a lot of time in Miami in the past 20 years, and I have so many friends here. I love the energy of the city. If I’m in Miami, here are some of the things I love to do:

T Join my friend Erika on her boat for cocktails. I love catching up with friends when I’m in the area and often head to the Biscayne Bay Yacht Club, where we’ll watch the sunset.

T I’ll always visit my favorite places to eat in Miami—ZZ’s Club, Mandolin Aegean Bistro, or Casa Tua—and end the night walking through the Design District.

T The last time I was in Miami I stayed at The Four Seasons Hotel at The Surf Club, which is a beautiful space. I always like to visit new places, so I’ll stay somewhere different every time I’m in the city.

T I’m a big fan of the Design District, especially the Museum Garage, which showcases the work of different artists and designers from around the world. It’s so inspiring.

T Visit my Dr. Barbara Sturm Spa & Boutique! I’m so happy to have a physical space in Miami where customers can interact with our aestheticians. I often ask for my Signature SturmGlow™️ Facial for an instant skin refresh and immediate glow.

A NEW WAVE HAS COME

The beloved DJturned-brand-builder Brendan Fallis shares the backstory on his next chapter and why Miami is one of his go-to spots for product and home inspiration. Take it away!

Acolumn…for me?

Sign me up! I’m happy to be here at Spotlight to discuss all things art and design, given it’s Miami Art and Design Week!

I just launched Fallis Studios, which I’m excited about! It’s a multi-armed business having a product design side focusing on what I consider my nonnegotiable essentials, and another side focusing on interior design/renovation. The design/ renovation arm is currently staying internal, focusing on my personal projects, and scaling to work I’m doing with friends and associates.

The product arm is out in the wild already! I’ve now launched five products—a duffle bag, espresso cups, a blanket, a lighter, and a bedside water carafe and glasses. I worked tirelessly on designing these

in a striped-down format, providing function and class at the same time. Playing off existing silhouettes in the market, I thought I’d introduce products into society with familiar accents and shapes, so people felt comfortable with them, but giving them a higher level of design than previous iterations from other designers. That also served as a test to understand whether there was enough demand through the communities I’ve created or if it was just a dream that would require rethinking the plan in

general. Luckily, my gut feeling was correct, and here I am in business shortly after.

Why create this new brand? After DJing for more than a decade, I began to romanticize life at home. Then it happened— my wife, Hannah Bronfman, and I had a baby. Now, I want to be at home more and create a beautiful, comfortable environment along with products to exist in that space. I’d worked for brands for years, whether DJing or doing social campaigns, and had also sourced products at my first job when I

moved to NYC from Canada. So it was a natural next step for me, and a guide for my future.

Now, back to Miami! I’m get more design inspo for product and home when I’m here. I love to stay at the St. Regis Bal Harbour or The Surf Club. The beach gets a bit hectic, so it’s nice to be up in Bal Harbour and pop down to find the South Beach energy. The Surf Club might be my fave restaurant in Miami, and what a great bar to sit at, too. And considering my wife and I met in Miami during Basel, it’s safe to say this place has a special spot in my heart.

We’re just finishing up a threeyear renovation in NYC, and I’m always looking at art while I’m in Miami during Art Week. This is the first time I will be buying at this scale. It’s always interesting to look at your space and wonder what should sit in a specific spot to give more life to the place, but not dominate and take away from the design. I’ve mapped out all the spaces requiring art and approximate sizing, but I now need to find pieces that work and are within my budget. I’m going with the age-old advice of “Only buy something you’re willing to look at all day.” I think that’s where new buyers go wrong. They try to buy things as an investment rather than for joy.

Like stocks, it’s a hard market to read right now, so I’m mostly looking to buy things I enjoy. See you out there! T

It’s getting cold in New York City, which means one thing: We’re all in Miami! Now that the area is crowded with a ton of great singles, it’s time to break down my tips on how to reel in someone great.

Fun fact: I technically met my husband in Miami! We ran into each other at the Soho Beach House New Year’s Eve party, which I recommend if you’re single and looking. But before we skip ahead to New Year’s Eve, let’s talk Art Basel. You’re

either in Miami because you love art, you work in art, or you just love the parties. Either way, here are some important things to remember:

OPT FOR AN OUTDOOR PARTY VS. AN INDOOR CLUB

This can be hard, especially considering there are so many great clubs in Miami. But you’re not going to have a meaningful conversation with anyone while you’re screaming over loud techno music and getting spilled

on by your drunk friend. There are tons of amazing, more lowkey parties. So find one!

ACTUALLY GO TO SEE THE ART

You’re at one of the premier art shows in the world with 250 of the world’s leading galleries showing the works of 4,000 artists. If you don’t go see the art, you’re wasting your money. Plus, that’s where the people you want to meet will be. There’s nothing like an old-fashioned meet cute at your favorite painting.

ATTEND AN ART BASEL–RELATED EVENT

Art Basel isn’t just about walking around and looking at art. It’s also about learning about art, speaking about culture, attending panels, and more! Get tickets to something that isn’t just at the Convention Center, and you never know who you’ll meet or what you’ll learn.

LIVE MUSIC IS A GOOD IDEA

If you’re looking for something a little classier than your typical party, the Faena always has amazing live music at night in its Living Room lounge. Soho Beach House also tends to have Questlove or some other incredible DJs spinning, so look out for what parties are being thrown there, too.

DON’T FORGET TO RELAX

Lest we forget, we are in Miami, after all. And there’s a huge and beautiful beach! Take at least one day off from the art to work on your tan. Or head to the spa. You’ll look a lot cuter at the parties or events that night with a little glow after some R&R. And the beach chairs are usually in such close proximity to one another that you may even meet someone while relaxing! T

NEXTGEN CREATORS: ARTISTS TO WATCH

What artistic talents are going to be responsible for creating the next masterpieces of our generation? We’re putting the Spotlight on three rising-star artists who have cutting-edge craft and are leaving their mark on the art world. BY

WHO: FORREST KIRK

WHAT: This talented artist spent time studying classical painting techniques in an atelier in Paris after graduating from California State University, Los Angeles. The bold chromatic diversity of Kirk’s paintings are achieved using a variety of media ranging from oils and acrylic to bubble wrap, fabric, and Gorilla Glue. His images often reference psychological uncertainty and anxiety arising from underlying power structures, specifically those experienced in contemporary urban settings.

WHERE: Los Angeles

Forrest, how did you land in the art world?

It’s cliché, but I’ve always been an artist from as early as I can remember. I used to lie in bed as a kid and just look at the walls in my room and imagine beautiful paintings. Since then I just kept going, always pushing forward, getting better and better at execution of the work.

Describe your art aesthetic.

Sensual with silhouettes. I want the viewer to feel something— happiness, goose bumps, or a shiver—when they see my work.

Proudest career accomplishment?

The first time a museum purchased my work. The Hammer Museum was the first, years ago, but I always remember seeing them putting the work into their permanent collection.

Favorite Basel memory?

It’s kinda nerdy, but I like going to Basel and attending the talks. I usually go on a day when there are a couple of talks from other artists, curators, or someone interesting I’d like to hear and ask a few questions.

Where can people check out your work at Art Basel?

I’ll have work in the Art Basel main fair with Vielmetter gallery. I’ll also have work at NADA with Rebecca Camacho Presents. [After Basel] I have two upcoming exhibitions. I have my show titled “Beneath No One” coming up in January 2023 with Rebecca Camacho’s gallery in San Francisco. Then I have my show called “The Owl of Minerva Flies at Dusk” coming up in February 2023 with Vielmetter in Los Angeles. Each show utilizes a different color palette. Also, the first show is more small-scale works, and the latter show will have large-scale works.

WHO: JASON SEIFE WHAT: Seife’s work references

vintage Persian carpets, an art form that is often taken for granted in modern times. Carpets were a big part of his childhood growing up with immigrant parents of Middle Eastern descent. Seife re-creates these antique weavings by tediously painting them on canvas in colors and mediums that were not normally used in their origin. He presents the pieces in a new and exciting way. The creation of these works is both a therapeutic and a spiritual process; being able to channel his obsession with detail into the intricate geometry and compositions of the carpets allows him to find himself working hours on end without lifting his brush.

WHERE: Miami

Jason, what’s the backstory on how you became an artist?

I fell in love with art at a very young age. When I was in elementary school, my art teacher realized I drew well and suggested I apply for a magnet school with an art program. Upon attending this school, it opened my eyes to the possibilities of new mediums in art that I didn’t have access to previously. While no career path, especially in the arts, is linear, I’ve had my ups and downs and moments where I almost gave up, but I always kept coming back to it. I’m fortunate to be able to do what I love for a living and create art full-time.

24 \ Art Basel Miami Beach 2022 \ Spotlight Fresh Talent
Forrest Kirk Jason Seife

What are you currently working on?

I’m currently working on my largest exhibition to date, which also happens to be my first U.S. solo show and will take place at the Pérez Art Museum Miami from May 2023 to January 2024. The Pérez Art Museum was also the first museum I ever attended, back when it was at its previous location and called the Miami Art Museum. I visited it on a field trip with the school I mentioned. It’s pretty surreal to have an exhibition there, considering the impact it had on me while visiting as a young artist. During Basel, I’ll be hosting private studio visits.

WHO: ALLISON ZUCKERMAN

WHAT: Zuckerman is an American contemporary artist. Her work takes art historical paintings and Internet culture as a point of departure, utilizing both paint and digitally manipulated images to create acerbic hybrid portraits brimming with cultural and societal critique. These colorful pop collages are created from fragments of Zuckerman’s past work, imagery of iconic paintings overlaid entirely with paint. Shortly after receiving her MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Zuckerman attracted the interest of the influential art patrons Don and Mera Rubell, who offered her a residency at their Miami museum.

WHERE: Brooklyn

Allison, how do you describe your aesthetic as an artist?

I describe my work as “pop surrealism.” Harnessing a maximalist spirit and hypersaturated approach to image making, I represent and update the centuries-old art historical narrative of the submissive feminine subject as an empowered, intimidating, and autonomous protagonist. You’ve been showing your work at Art Basel since your career began. What have been some of your best memories?

last year, the first Art Basel since COVID, I had a solo exhibition at the Versace Mansion presented by The Ranch. This exhibition of paintings illustrated how the epic aesthetic of both Versace and his venerable establishment playfully interacted with my work, creating a theatrical and exuberant exhibition. In one room, the wallpaper merged seamlessly with the background of my painting, while the ancient

How do you describe your work?

My work is heavily influenced by the Middle Eastern side of my heritage, which undoubtedly informs the aesthetic in my work. I draw inspiration from textile design, Islamic architecture, and even ceramics. I have a strong interest in utilizing ancient art forms to create modern art.

It has to be the memory of opening my solo exhibition, “Stranger in Paradise,” at the Rubell Museum in December 2017. It featured four large-scale billboardsize paintings that reimagined immense nude muses as commanding authors of their own stories.

I created these paintings during my residency at the Rubell Museum, working on a scale so massive that I needed a scissor lift to reach the top corners of each canvas! However,

Greco-Roman-inspired fountains of the entrance created a dramatic framing device of my paintings in the main hall.

Basel exhibition?

I hope for viewers to feel connected to my work, further an appreciation for art history, and experience how beauty can manifest itself in unpredictable, impactful, surprising, and gratifying ways.

Where can we find you and your work?

My work is on view in the Rubell Museum, specifically at Leku restaurant, and with Ross + Kramer Gallery. T

MIAMI PERSONALITY FOODGOD HAS BEEN IN THE PUBLIC EYE SINCE MAKING A SPLASH ON KEEPING UP WITH THE KARDASHIANS FOR YEARS, HE’S BUILT HIS BRAND WITH MILLIONS OF FOLLOWERS ON SOCIAL MEDIA, COVERING THE HOTTEST IN FOOD, LIFESTYLE, AND LUXURY. NOW, FOODGOD TALKS ALL THINGS BRAND-BUILDING, LIFE IN MIAMI, AND MORE WITH SPOTLIGHT.

Stylists: Alix Gropper, Danielle O’Connell Photography Assistant: Conrad Tomasaitis

Foodgod’s Fashion: Alexander McQueen suit; Hugo Boss sweater; Koio sneakers; Bondeye Jewelry silver layered chains

Foodgod, we’re so excited to have you as the cover star for our Art Basel Miami Beach issue.

Did you ever think you’d become a star yourself?

Not really! Growing up, there were only movie and music stars. That was not me! But then reality TV happened with shows like The Simple Life and The Osbournes and that gave me the motivation to do it. How do you describe the Foodgod brand?

It’s a brand based on experiences— meaning I find the best of, the coolest of, and the newest of!

What’s the backstory behind legally changing your name from Jonathan Cheban to Foodgod?

After my Foodgod brand started taking off, I saw the attention it was receiving, and I knew this was going to be my brand. This was not a blog but a lifestyle, not based on recipes, but on fun, experiences, viral places, and hot spots.

What sparked your love for food and restaurants?

Since college, my days revolved around food—where we were going and, more importantly, what we were eating. It just stayed with me.

Fans have gotten to know you on Keeping Up With the Kardashians. Has life changed since being on the show? It’s very exciting when the entire world watches your daily life for over 10 years.

I am forever grateful. I have had so many opportunities. I visit other countries and am recognized around the world.

In your opinion, what should creators do to stand out today?

Find a niche and stick with it. I’ve stuck with my passion for food and kept going and knew it was going to work. Today, I have millions of followers.

What have been some of your most outrageous food discoveries?

Introducing the world to gold Buffalo wings, rainbow cotton candy burritos, double-crust pizza, and so many more. Check out my Instagram!

So many people associate you with Miami. How does it feel to be back for the season?

I have been counting the minutes to get back to Miami. As New York is going through a transitional time, I can think and work in Miami while looking at

Spotlight \ Art Basel Miami Beach 2022 \ 29

the ocean. I have been coming here for a long time and love watching it grow. It’s exciting to see the new restaurants coming to town and all the new highrises being built.

You’ve been attending Art Basel for years. What does a typical Basel day look like for you?

Not a typical day, but a typical day and night! Mornings start with breakfast events, fashion all day long, big dinners, and 24-hour days. I like to go to the art show before it opens to take it all in.

Favorite Basel memory?

When there was a car, a Jaguar, painted with my face on it. They drove it all over town. Everyone was sending me pictures!

Are you an art collector? Isn’t everyone? Art is so personal and different for everyone. So much of the food you post is incredibly artistic. What restaurants and dishes have the best presentation in Miami?

Gekko is incredible; the strawberry dessert is artwork. Makoto in Bal Harbour has beautiful food presentations—and, of course, the fish at Milos.

Favorite Miami gallery? Avant Gallery—so many cool popculture artists!

You’ve starred on other reality shows over the years. Would you want to do that again?

Absolutely! I love reality TV; it’s so fun. I would welcome it.

What are you working on now?

My TV show on discovery+. Launching Foodgod Jersey-style pizza, Foodgod ice cream, and Foodgod vapes, which are taking over the market with zero nicotine and helping people stop smoking. What would fans be surprised to learn about you?

I hate mustard.

What’s next?

Growing the Foodgod empire. Lots of products. I love product. Proudest career moment?

Getting a show named Foodgod on Food Network and discovery+.

What do you think is the biggest misconception about you?

That I just hang out all day. I work 24/7. T

YOUR ART BASEL HOROSCOPE FOR DECEMBER

SAGITTARIUS

November 22–December 21

December is always fun, especially in Miami. Dear Sag, you’re encouraged to connect with other people for the greater good. Meet old friends at the Edition and see who they bring along. The world is opening up with art, beauty, and you!

CAPRICORN

December 22–January 19

You hard-working goat can finally put down that plow or pencil. You deserve a nice break, and why not an elegant one worthy of your status; beachside dancing at the Faena offers a chance to kick up your heels and party the night away.

AQUARIUS

January 20–February 18

Wizard, you can be “out there,” but you always know who you are. Uranus retrograde is on your side, so make the changes you can. Miami’s palm trees will wave their assent as you fix your own issues and then take on the world. Your vision is needed.

PISCES

February 19–March 20

Dreaming won’t be hard for the fish sign this month. There’s lots of art to distract Pisces while Neptune is in retrograde. Don’t procrastinate—just make a decision, then go to the beach. Relish this magical time with the art world as your backdrop.

ARIES

March 21–April 19

Fire up your mojo, Aries. Miami is the right place for all your Martian energy, but as Mars is in retrograde, you’ll be more contemplative than usual. Think twice before impulsively buying that painting you loved; you’ll still have fun in the FL sun.

TAURUS

April 20–May 20

There’s no running of the bulls down Convention Center Drive. Instead, luxury-loving Taurus can stay at the Ritz, soaking up sun and counting their cash. Uranus keeps challenging Taurus to grow; just remember to get off the couch and dance.

GEMINI

May 21–June 20

Chatty Gemini may want to talk abstract expressionism at the Bass Museum, but this month, it’s also important for the Twins to stay close to friends they can trust. You’re ready for some spiritual shifts, and what better way than a bonfire on the beach?

CANCER

June 21–July 22

They’ll be no time for crabbing this month. Though you might find soft shells at Joe’s Stone Crab, you’re in for a sunny ride. Let go of past fears. Keep your hopes and head high; wear a big hat and trade the moon for the sun while you prance in the waves.

LEO

July 23–August 22

The lion loves the sun, but think of home, too. A partner may need you more than they’re willing to say. René Magritte’s “The Lovers” painting says a lot about how mysterious relationships can be. Take a spin on the Causeway to rekindle the flame.

VIRGO

August 23–September 22

Don’t waste time being too picky. You’re in Miami and this is a moment of rare peace, creativity, and even libido in the stars. So put down your iPad, stroll a bit, and follow it with a Malibu Sunset at the Lido. You’ll never want to go home.

LIBRA

September 23–October 22

Always big on harmony, your diplomatic skills now turn to prepping for the holidays—and buying plenty of gorg art to gift to your friends. Art Basel may not be in your budget, but you can always paint some shells and wrap them in glitter!

SCORPIO

October 23–November 21

Mysterious Scorpio has a case of Venus interruptus from the 10th to 18th. You could enjoy some South Beach romance if you stay open. You’re always relaxed by water, so spend time by the ocean and let the good vibes roll in. You can write postcards later.

A Day in the Life of Elena Soboleva

GLOBAL HEAD OF ONLINE SALES AT

Tell us about your background!

I have a decade of experience in the art and technology space and joined David Zwirner in 2018. Prior to that, I was an early employee at Artsy, wearing many hats and culminating into a lead curator role to oversee commissions, performances, and major site-specific installations.

How did you originally get into the art world?

It’s one of the busiest times of year for Elena Soboleva, who oversees programming and strategy for the gallery’s worldwide digital sales channels. Here’s what a typical day during Art Basel looks like for her. BY

9 a.m.

I’m not a morning person, but I just feel so good waking up to sunshine. If I don’t have a morning meeting, you’ll find me at the W for breakfast. Or I’m grabbing Joe & The Juice for the pure boost of vitamins to power my day.

6 p.m.

2 p.m. Visit collections off-site. I’m excited about the Rubell’s visionary focus for young art through its residency program, which has featured talent like Cy Gavin and Lucy Dodd, and has an expansive collection of contemporary greats.

11 a.m.

At the Convention Center for lots of meetings. I’m always living between the physical and digital realms, making sure the two are seamlessly in sync.

1 p.m. Head to La Sandwicherie on 14th Street, the ultimate lunch spot.

Growing up immersed in museums and culture was the bedrock to my lifelong passion and career. My parents are geologists, but they placed great value in the arts and sciences, so I had a strong education in both, which gave me the foundation for inquiry and iterative thinking.

What activations are you most excited for?

La Prairie always does some of my favorite events because they offer a little slice of oasis and relaxation with brilliant pop-ups and art experiences by Niki de Saint Phalle in this year’s VIP lounge. There are many Blockchain-forward events, including a MoNa metaverse pop-up at Faena beach and FWB Café 11. And of course, it’s the perfect opportunity to catch up with friends and artists.

What’s your go-to Basel outfit?

4 p.m. Wander through the Design District shops to see the annual art collabs and grab a taco at the new Tacombi there, before returning to South Beach.

I love to support emerging designers. My style is always mixing architectural shapes with feminine accents. Bernadette Antwerp is a favorite for Miami events. Third Form is ideal for easy daytime pieces. For evening glam, think a perfect Courrèges cutout piece or some DES PHEMMES extravagance. The real key is shoes because it’s all beach or boardwalks.

8 p.m. Hosting a gallery dinner at Soho House.

Change and get ready for dinner. Proceed to sit in an Uber for an aggravating amount of time to go a few blocks.

midnight End up either on a boat or at some Web3-adjacent happening because the two words are colliding and Miami is the nexus of that.

Artists you’re excited about at David Zwirner right now?

This winter I’m excited about the growing selection of available works we have on davidzwirner.com. Three prints in particular that I love are Raymond Pettibon’s “No Title (Fck All Y’All!),” Katherine Bernhardt’s “Pikachu,” and Tunji Adeniyi-Jones’ “Sunrisers.” They all make for great holiday gifts.
