oh,

HANNAH TURNER-HARTS
T
here are certain movies I love to watch during the summer, many of which are classics; most predominantly, Grease. I can’t help but get the lyrics “Summer days, driftin’ away to uh, oh those summer nights” out of my head. I guess that’s because the summer days really do drift away, especially as we enter the final full month of summer. But the truth is, some of the most special and magical Hamptons summer times are at night—the wonderful parties, gatherings with family and friends, and late-night ice-cream runs, plus so much more. In this issue, we’re featuring the life of the party Out East—jewelry designer Stephanie Gottlieb. She’s a millennial entrepreneur who’s made fine-jewelry shopping approachable for the GenNow customer, and she’s also loved by hundreds of thousands of followers on Instagram. In our exclusive interview, she dishes on designing Britney Spears’ wedding rings; how she’s built her brand; and some interesting personal tidbits I know you guys will love to read—check it out! Also in this issue, meet two new “Spotters!”—Sakara Life co-founder Danielle DuBoise, who’s bringing her wellness expertise to our pages via “Living Well” for the rest of the summer, in addition to photographer Sophie Elgort, who’s sharing her photography skills and eyes through her new column, “Picture Perfect,” too. Because there have been so many fun parties this season, peruse our pages for the best-of pics;
a revealing interview with actress and writer Jenny Mollen on her new tomes; a day-in-the-life of Sarah Wetenhall, the founder of one of my favorite hotels in Palm Beach, The Colony; and more. P.S. MORE LUXURY BRANDS POP-UP OUT EAST! VALENTINO, PRADA, CHANEL—THE LATEST LUXURY BRANDS TO OPEN THEIR DOORS IN EAST HAMPTON. WHAT’S YOUR FAVE?
Dr. Cindy Bressler
Natalie, how did you land in real estate? I fell into the entertainment business, which helped me survive in NYC at that time of my life. When I look back now, I realize how lucky I was to have had that experience and gone so far. However, at the time my passion and heart wasn’t into it. I was still craving to be in the home-design world, which through the years evolved into real estate. Now I’m loving selling “lifestyles and dreams” with Saunders. Tell us about your Prince moment that landed you on “Page Six”! I was a cocktail waitress at the iconic nightclub and lounge Nell’s in downtown NYC. Prince came in and the next thing I knew, I was onstage with him at Radio City
Music Hall. Somehow word got out that Prince was pursuing me and we ended up on Page Six. Thanks to my mom, I have the article as a keepsake. She found it by chance in a book she had saved it in, the day before he passed away. What’s new on the real estate scene? What was old is new again! The vibrant Village of Westhampton Beach has made a huge comeback since it’s revitalization with new chic restaurants and luxury shops. It’s a true beach town that’s ideally located with quick access to all the East End has to offer and easily accessible from Manhattan. Also new again are open houses as events! With summer nearing its end, what can potential buyers expect? The fall season is typically a busier time in terms of real estate transactions than the summer months. And with low inventory, well-done homes that are priced properly will continue to sell quickly. My advice to serious buyers: If a house checks your boxes, don’t hesitate to pursue it!

The Starlight Lounge and Bar, named in homage to the Waldorf Astoria’s famed Starlight Roof, features a dramatic Art Deco backdrop for a festive event. I grew up living with art. Mostly my father Arthur Elgort’s photography, but my parents also collected other artists’ work, often friends of theirs. A Chuck Price (whose star painting is still on the top of my wish list) hangs in the downstairs bathroom. Friend and model Jeny Howorth, who could be mistaken as a bird in this shot, hangs above the piano (one of my dad’s photographs)—interspersed with personal photographs— a diptych of my mom and dad in a hammock together hangs at the end of the dining room table. The stairway features framed artwork by us as young kids, which made me proud to be featured so centrally and gave me early confidence in myself as an artist. The home lives and breathes summer. Now it’s a goal of mine to make my own home feel like that. Of course, it’s the people who live there and friends who visit that make a home, but it doesn’t hurt to have great music playing (Bob Marley, Gipsy Kings, and bossa nova are a few of the rotating favorites) and art you love on the walls. Your kids are probably fantastic artists (most are), so short of framing and hanging their work, which I do recommend (Mary Godfrey is a great framer in Southampton), why not fill your home with artwork you love and that makes your home feel like summer? Here are some of my favorites—from friends, family, and others I’ve encountered along the way. T

YOUR BIGGEST DATING APP PROFILE MISTAKES Indulge in the latest advice from our resident dating expert. BY LINDSEY METSELAAR It’s August, and even though we’re meeting more people than we usually do IRL, we still need to be utilizing dating apps. Why? Because everyone has their phone in their hand 24/7. And if you’re not on the dating apps, you’re missing out on a huge opportunity to connect. So it’s time to shed some light on the five biggest mistakes we’re making in our profiles: MISTAKE NO. 1 Wearing sunglasses in every photo. We get it—it’s sunny out there! You don’t want to have to squint when your friend takes a photo of you on the beach. But you may as well be wearing an N-95 mask because we have no idea what you look like! We want to see your beautiful eyes. It’s always a plus to have at least two photos where we can see them.
MISTAKE NO. 3 Overedited photos. We’re all guilty of using a good photoediting app. Nothing wrong with pulling in an arm or two or editing out a pimple. However, some of us take it too far. It’s all about self-awareness. If you know that you overdo it, 24 \ August 2022 \ Spotlight
Lindsey Metselaar
don’t include an edited photo. Catfishing is a scary concept, and you don’t want to be accused of doing that when I’m sure you’re beautiful without the edit! MISTAKE NO. 4 Too many bikini photos for women or shirtless photos for men. The phrase “If you got it, flaunt it” definitely rings true here, but then where is the mystery? Especially in the summer when we’re barely wearing clothing anyway! Would you rather someone judge you on how you look in a bathing suit or on the quality
of your character? Unless you’re just looking for a friend with benefits, I’d save those photos for date No. 4. MISTAKE NO. 5 Negativity! The worst thing you can say on your profile is, “Don’t swipe right if ____.” This makes it seem like you’re already starting on a bad foot! Dating apps can be daunting, and we’re looking for levity in an otherwise annoying task. Focus on why they should swipe right, not “they shouldn’t if.”
The bottom line? When people swipe on an app, they’re looking for two things—if you stand out, and if you can make them laugh. Focus on doing one or both by treating it as if you’re jokingly curating a friend’s profile. The less seriously you take it, the more you end up attracting someone worth ending your hot girl/hot guy summer early for. T
ALL IMAGES COURTESY
MISTAKE NO. 2 Every picture is a group shot. How in the world are we supposed to identify you? We’ve never met before, and most people are not able to discern you, let alone someone they’ve actually met before, from a group photo. I’m not going to lie, there are still group photos my husband is in that I’ve thought he was another person. Make their lives simple, and limit it to only one group photo.

EAT CLEAN PLAY DIRTY The co-CEO of Sakara Life shares her expert advice for living your best life. BY DANIELLE DUBOISE Summer, and the so-called “bikini season,” can be a triggering time—it was for me, and it might still be for you. I used to feel the need to stick to some form of extreme diet or juice cleanse to look my best, while simultaneously being tempted by the season’s indulgent lifestyle of outdoor barbecues, late-night pizza, and seemingly bottomless glasses of wine. It made me feel like to achieve one thing I wanted, I had to give up something else. Then I learned a secret—a balanced life isn’t lived on the extreme, but rather, always in motion. In truth, we are what we do the majority of the time. It’s okay to let our pendulums swing to the croissant-and-dancing side of life if we know how to swing back with choices that nourish our bodies from the inside out. At Sakara, we call this philosophy #EatCleanPlayDirty. So how to live it and transform 28 \ August 2022 \ Spotlight

your life? Here are two core principles to guide you: P Create your health tool kit. P Know what brings you joy and do what makes you feel alive. So, what are the three-tofive things you need to feel your absolute best? These are
nonnegotiables—the things you should be doing most of the time, such as eating clean, nutrient- and plant-rich meals, taking the right supplements, finding time for peace and silence, moving your body, and spending time with loved ones. Consistently choose foods that make you feel energized, empowered, motivated, and
sexy. The Sakara nutrition philosophy is all about getting an abundance of fresh, whole foods—a wide variety of vegetables, fruits, leafy greens, nuts, seeds, and legumes— paired with high-quality cold-pressed fats (such as extra-virgin olive, avocado, and coconut oil), natural probiotics (fermented foods like kimchi and sauerkraut), and functional, nutrient-dense superfoods (like hemp seeds, chia seeds, turmeric, and spirulina). Nourishing this way every day not only checks off all the boxes for foods that your body thrives on, but innately crowds out foods that aren’t as kind to your systems. It changes you on a cellular level—turning your body into a flora-powered digestion machine. So if on occasion you do happen to eat less than ideally, you’re better equipped to handle it. At Sakara, we believe that joy is a nutrient, and one you should get plenty of. For me, that includes enjoying a glass of chilled red on a hot summer day, time at the beach with my kids, late-night dancing, and saying yes to a new opportunity that gets me out of my comfort zone. True health isn’t all buttoned-up and polished with a list of wellness to-do’s. It’s a little imperfect—and that’s kind of perfect. There’s no room for guilt in a life like this, because there is no “indulging” or “wagon to fall off of.” It’s just your abundant, beautiful life. This mindset changed my life—replacing the fear that diets and insecurity used to bring with confidence and excitement for the opportunity to be fully present and feel alive. Wishing you a summer—and life—to #EatCleanPlayDirty, so you can enjoy living in a body you love and shining your brightest light. T

GARDEN PARTY
The magical last month of summer is here, and no moment can be wasted. Your garden is in full bloom with magnificently colorful flowers—including dahlias, zinnias, sunflowers, and hydrangeas. Here’s how to incorporate their floral splendor into every aspect of your event! BY STEPHANIE NASS
DÉCOR
For the table, in addition to collecting fresh flowers from your garden and supplementing with more from your local farm, use a flower theme to decorate. Our Pressed Flower Napkins include imagery from actual preserved flowers, and the Tulip Candle Holders create the impression of flowers growing out of the tabletop. Bud vases are an easy way for anyone to arrange actual flowers with a few snips; you can spread them across your dining table to create a continuous string. Prepare a fragrant powder room. The soaps from Brazilian heritage brand Granado are beautifully packaged and smell great. You can also light a scented candle from Kai.
V Sam Edelman Inez slide sandals in Modern Ivory, $109, samedelman.com
FOOD
A lovely garnish is edible flowers from Balsam Farms, Green Thumb, Amber Waves Farm, or your own garden. Squash blossoms, calendula, nasturtium, borage, pansies, and mini violas can be added to savory and sweet dishes—salads, soups, and risotto—as well as ice cream, parfaits, cakes, and pies. If you don’t have the bandwidth to bake
and decorate your own cake, Carissa’s Bakery can assist with a floral confection.
DRINKS
Elderflower liqueur is an aromatic addition to cocktails. Use St-Germain in a gimlet or a martini. Use edible flowers to top off libations.
FASHION
Wear a dress to blend in. I love this floral printed Damaris Bailey Pina dress, which is breezy and elegant, with slides from Sam Edelman. Akris’ Shoulder Bag in Raffia with leather trim is a refined take on a garden bag. Our Flower Moon Earrings are the perfect last touch! T

HAIR TALK WITH TED GIBSON The celebrity hairstylist shares his top tips for maintaining the health of your hair, while also making it look its absolute best! BY SYDNEY SADICK
Ted, with August here, many are looking to spice up their hair game. What do you recommend? August is still a time for vacationing, so it’s important to preserve your hair color during this last full month of summer. The best way to do this is to use oil on your hair when you’re in the sun, as well as sunscreen on it to prevent damage. If you aren’t vacationing and are thinking about what your fall hair is going to be, remember: Color will change to a slightly
different hue of blonde, and browns will go a little warmer. Be bold by adding a haircut, too! How often should a woman change her hair? At least two times a year. That keeps it fresh. Change is good! How do you think TikTok is influencing the hair industry? I think social media in general has changed everything. It used to be that you had to be in one of the major cities to create a business or a following. Now, you can live anywhere and be famous and cutting-edge. All you

INFLUENCING THE HAMPT NS
BARBIE BRIGNONI @barbiebrignoni, 122K followers Barbie Brignoni is a 29-year-old influencer who only started creating content in 2019. Just last year, she made it her full-time job. If you look anywhere on her feed, you will notice her beautiful locks. In fact, she’s working on her own curly-hair brand with her best friend. Brignoni is also the creator of Noni Collective, a consulting business dedicated to helping Latinx (she’s Puerto Rican and Spanish) creators “build purpose-driven brands.” When asked how followers responded to her Hamptons content, she says, “They loved it! Some people thought I was in Greece, but in reality, I was still in New York. It’s a great way to create something unique without having to travel across the world.” Brignoni, who recently moved to the Upper East Side, adds, “I absolutely love my job, and I love to create, so it never feels stressful and overwhelming, especially when you’re in a place as beautiful as the Hamptons.”
LILY MONTASSER @lilymontasser, 112K followers Lily Montasser, 29, seems like a Hamptons natural. She’s a surfer and exudes hardcore Montauk vibes but prefers the “low-key surfer/farmer’s market side of the Hamptons.” Montasser is the co-CEO and founder of the Ambyr Club, a new speeddating startup. “I just want to continue working alongside and building relationships with brands that I believe in and respect,” Montasser says. “My favorite part about being a content creator is the creative direction and visuals. I would love to lean more into that role, not just for myself but for other brands as well.” Her favorite Hamptons spot to work is “definitely the beach in Montauk around Ditch Plains, where the landscape is so special.” Stay tuned!
ISABEL TAN @prettyfrowns, 271K followers Isabel Tan is a 26-year-old creator living in New York City. She recalls that she was “one of those kids who grew up on the Internet” and began creating content at 11 years old, when she asked her parents for a digital camera. Prior to visiting the Hamptons, Tan thought it was solely a place for twentysomethings to party all night. Now, she has recognized just how much the area have to offer and that it’s the perfect canvas to meet all her content needs. “I think what makes the Hamptons stand out is that you’re still able to have the comforts and accessibility to everything, even though you’re in a beach town,” Tan says. “There are always events happening, but you can also have a quiet and relaxing weekend if you choose to. It’s really the best of both worlds!” 36 \ August 2022 \ Spotlight
PAIGE LORENZE @paigelorenze 344K followers Paige Lorenze, 24, isn’t your typical influencer. At the age of 8, she started skiing competitively and lived away from home from the sixth grade until she moved to Burke Mountain Academy in Vermont for high school. As a kid, she spent summers in Nantucket but started to visit the Hamptons after moving to NYC to attend Parsons School of Design. Soon after, she started Dairy Boy, a brand that was originally inspired by the movement to go back to whole milk. Now, the venture has transformed into a way for her to share her passion for the outdoors and recall her childhood memories. When asked how followers responded to her content, she says, “I think they liked it because moving to the East has brought me back to my roots. Being outside and by the water in this kind of atmosphere is more authentic to me.” Lorenze has also taken two trips to the LoveShackFancy house. She ran us through a day in the Hamptons with the brand: “I started by walking around Sag Harbor and went to a cute café. I then played dress-up at the house and shot content in the backyard. I later bounced around to a few parties with different creators and then ended my night swimming in the ocean. It was the perfect day!”

STEVE MADDEN TAKES THE HAMPTONS
Steve Madden
STORE PHOTOGRAPHY BY HANNAH TURNER-HARTS; COURTESY
The iconic King of Shoes is taking the East End by storm with his first outpost in the heart of Southampton. Here’s why he finally pulled the trigger on his new digs, and why seeing people in his designs never gets old. BY SYDNEY SADICK Steve, what made you decide to (finally!) open a store in the Hamptons? I’ve been coming out here since 1989 and I love it, but I never wanted to open Out East because I didn’t want to ever mix my happy place with a store. That said, the Hamptons is an international fashion center now, and we need to be here! Why is the Hamptons so important to you? Not only have I been coming out for the past 30 years, but I’m also an avid golfer and it’s part of my Hamptons story. I love it. More importantly, my children love it here! How did you decide what town to open in? It was never a doubt. It was always going to be Southampton. I love Sag Harbor and all of the other towns, but it just seems to be more international in Southampton. The store is tailored to this seaside community. Have you been popping into the store? Often. I’ve been there every day since it’s been open.
You have more than 200 retail locations of your brand. What are you hoping Steve Madden in the Hamptons will accomplish? I just want to communicate the spirit of what we do in the Hamptons. It’s like Starbucks; you want to have your coffee everywhere you visit, and you
should have your favorite shoes out here, too. Indeed. So, what are some of this summer’s most popular shoe styles? It’s everything that is the same as in the city—the Trixie, the Carissa, the denim cowboy boots. The Slinky is selling everywhere. Who are your current muses? We have a fantastic intern program with kids from schools like Ohio, Tulane, Michigan. Their styles are unique and inspiring. They’re confident and show it in their clothes and shoes. How has your brand evolved over the years? More groups of people wearing the shoes these days. It’s just more popular than ever.
“I never get tired of seeing people in my shoes. It’s the greatest.”
What does your typical day Out East look like? Probably play golf, exercise, have dinner somewhere out or at a friend’s. And now, go to the store. Will the store be a pop-up or stay open all year round? Haven’t decided yet. We’ll keep you posted! What’s been your proudest career accomplishment? That’s a great question. A really good question. Probably watching the people who have been with me a long time grow and become leaders. People who started working in the store and are now EVP of the company. It’s such a high. I never get tired of seeing people in my shoes. It’s the greatest. T The Steve Madden store is located at 95 Main Street, Southampton; stevemadden.com
RAPID FIRE WITH STEVE MADDEN! Most iconic Steve Madden shoe of all time? The Slinky. No. 1 place we’ll find you eating Out East? Poxabogue Golf Course. How many pairs of shoes do you personally own? Three, maybe four. I know that’s surprising. Morning or night person? Night. What’s the best show or movie you’ve seen recently? The Offer. One fashion trend you hope never comes back? Socks with sandals. Who’s your favorite style star right now? [Daughter] Goldie Madden. How to beat Hamptons traffic? It’s not too bad. You have to go off-hours. I would never do Friday at 4 p.m. Tonight is Sunday and I’ll leave at 9 p.m., which will be two hours to the city. Spotlight \ August 2022 \ 37

JEWELRY DESIGNER STEPHANIE GOTTLIEB HAS AN EYE FOR SPARKLE. THE FOUNDER OF HER NAMESAKE BRAND TALKS ABOUT HER “BLING EMPIRE,” DESIGNING BRITNEY’S RING—YEP, THAT BRITNEY!—AND WHAT’S LED TO HER SUCCESS. SHINE ON! BY SYDNEY SADICK PHOTOGRAPHY BY HANNAH TURNER-HARTS
Stylists: Alix Gropper, Danielle O’Connell Photography Assistant: Mark Grochowski Stephanie’s Fashion: Alamour Kaila dress; René Caovilla ankle-wrap stiletto sandals; Stephanie Gottlieb jewels
Stephanie, you just made headlines for designing Britney Spears’ wedding bands. What’s it been like since the news broke? It’s always fun when our audience grows because it’s an opportunity for us to reintroduce ourselves to our new followers, and to show them what we do! Following the announcement, we focused our content on our core best-selling unique SG products, and also a taste of bridal, our signature rainbow pieces, and of course, our Slider Bangle™. What went into your partnership? We worked with Britney and her team to create a stack that could be worn every day without overpowering her beautiful engagement ring, but was something that still felt special and unique. The first band is a classic round diamond eternity band in a shared prong setting with diamonds all around. This perfectly complements her round diamond center stone. We also designed a marquise diamond band, set east-west in a bezel-set eternity band. This was a nod to Britney’s playful side, and something that sets her stack apart from others. Both bands were created in platinum and feature 2 carats total weight of diamonds per band.
What a pinch-me moment for someone who’s built a brand for nearly a decade. How has your company evolved since launching in 2013? When I started the brand, I was a one-woman show. I had my hands in every piece of the business, and for the most part, I still do. But as the company has grown, I’ve learned where I can let other voices and influences drive the day-to-day. This has opened up room for me to grow personally as a business owner, but also has allowed the brand to take on new opportunities that I never saw myself doing. We’ve grown into a lifestyle brand that operates in the fashion jewelry, bridal, and fashion spaces, and it’s so exciting to be able to straddle these different worlds. What’s been your strategy in making fine jewelry feel fun and accessible? Most people don’t know this about me, but I’m actually very shy! Jewelry has always been an outlet for me to be creative and express myself and my style. I love getting dressed every day and selecting my jewels to complete my outfit, and I always strive to show our clients and followers the versatility of every piece and how they can style it in their own way! Your Instagram is a hub for all of your gorgeous creations. How has the platform impacted your biz? Instagram was the catalyst for changing the trajectory of my company. I set out to grow the company through word of mouth Spotlight \ August 2022 \ 39

within my own network, and Instagram took that concept and lit a fire on it! It’s through Instagram that I’ve been able to reach new audiences, and to do so without a dollar spent on marketing for the first eight years! It’s an incredible tool. Not only do people love seeing the jewelry you create, but they love following you and your life. What’s it like to know how much people like to follow your daily schedule? It’s honestly so much fun when I get to meet people who follow my account, or better yet who wear the jewelry and fashion collaborations! It’s definitely a bit weird when they know so much about my life, but it’s part of the reason that so many people resonate with our brand—because they feel like they know me! I’m a friend who teaches them about beautiful things, where to buy them, and how to style them! What’s your advice for the millennial who’s just starting out on her fine-jewelry purchasing journey? Buying jewelry should be fun! Try on as much jewelry as you can to see what suits your personality and your everyday life. Unlike clothing, which we change every day, jewelry can be worn all the time! I always encourage my customers who are shopping for their first important pieces to focus on classics that they’ll be able to love and wear forever! And then once you’ve built a wardrobe of basics, you can experiment and have fun with more trendy pieces. 40 \ August 2022 \ Spotlight
Gottlieb’s hot (pink) wheels
For grooms-to-be reading this, how do you work with men to surprise their fiancées with the perfect ring? Luckily, social media has given our shoppers so much access to imagery and knowledge that they never previously had, so most of our customers come with a clear sense of what they’re looking for. When they don’t, we know that if they’re coming to us, it’s because they were sent with some guidance from their significant other who loves our pieces, so we feel confident driving the process. The Hamptons is always a major backdrop to your Instagram posts. What have been the highlights of this summer so far for you? We just shot a campaign for the first time in the Hamptons, and it felt nice to be familiar with the location and to pick spots that felt organic for me! I’m so excited to have another big birthday
party at my new home (35 years old!) and to enjoy dinner parties with friends for the rest of our summer weekends! Tell us about your connection to the East End. Both my kids were born in the summer, so I have fond memories of the end of my pregnancies and those first weeks with
How are you activating your brand here this month? We’re hosting a trunk show at the SoulCycle Barn location in August, followed by a multibrand event. It’s fun to engage with our customers in person, because we don’t get many opportunities to do so.
DID YOU KNOW…
Collaborations are a big part of your business. What are your latest ones? We have three active collabs— Joe’s denim, Mystique sandals, and Pitusa beachwear. Each partnership is different, but there are a lot of commonalities. I always bring rainbow and sparkle into every collaboration, and every piece is something that I love and would wear! You have three dogs with K names. Kardashian inspo?! There may have been some small inspiration there! We started with Kiwi, because my husband and I both love Maroon 5, and one of their songs is “Kiwi.” After that, it was just fun to stick with the K’s. What’s the biggest misconception about you? That success was handed to me. I’m so fortunate to have grown up with parents who always supported my dreams. But I built this business from the ground up, and I learned hard lessons from experience about what it means to succeed—and fail. T
n My dad was born in Cuba, so I’m part Jewban. n I love to sing (and have a pretty good voice) but wouldn’t be caught dead letting anyone hear me. n Meeting new people gives me anxiety that I work really hard to hide. n I curse like a sailor. n I’m always cold! my newborns! YES WAY ROSÉ!
There’s no thinking of wine without thinking of Wölffer Estate Vineyard, so naturally, we got Joey Wölffer, chief brand officer and co-owner of the brand, to talk about her iconic Hamptons family biz with Spotlight.
Summer in a Bottle rosé
Joey Wölffer, Rachel Zoe, Pritika Swarup
BY SYDNEY SADICK Joey, it’s been quite the busy summer! What’s been new at the vineyard this season? Summer is always such a busy and exciting time for us. The vines are growing, the grapes are ripening, the tasting room and terrace are packed with people, the Wine Stand is back open for full-service food and drinks, and rosé season is in full swing. We came out with some fun new merch this summer, like our chic wine bags, beautiful S’well water bottles, floral phone cases, and colorful hoodies and T-shirts, which have all been a big hit! Why is rosé so synonymous with the Hamptons? For me, rosé is not just a drink, it’s a lifestyle. It’s the first and only wine to include an entirely new generation of younger people and has opened the wine category to more people. It symbolizes summer, celebrations, the beach, poolside lunches, and family picnics—all things that align perfectly with the youthful energy of the Hamptons. 42 \ August 2022 \ Spotlight
Wölffer collab with Baked by Melissa
Summer in a Bottle is all the rage. What went into creating this iconic drink? It all started when a friend of mine made a comment that Wölffer’s rosé was like “summer in a bottle,” which then turned into an idea for an ad campaign. After receiving the ad creative from our designer, which was this gorgeous floral artwork, our winemaker Roman Roth came up with the idea to turn it into a wine. So we did it, and before we knew it, we had sold 1,500 cases in two weeks. Summer in a Bottle rosé has become one of the biggest parts of our business, and it’s gotten us into so many new restaurants and stores. We want people to
live and breathe the Hamptons through our brand, and if any brand can emulate the bohemian Hamptons spirit that enjoys friends and family and appreciates the beauty of the East End, it’s ours. People even use the empty wine bottles as décor! We’ve seen people use our empty bottles to make everything from cups, to vases,
to candles, and more. It’s incredible to see how creative our fans can get, and we love that our artwork can be an inspiration to their artwork. Wölffer is a family business. What’s it like having everyone work together? With my brother Marc as coowner, my husband Max as CEO, Roman Roth as our winemaker and partner, and myself as co-
owner and chief brand officer, the four of us all have our distinct roles, which I think is crucial for a successful business. We all do what we do well, and while things aren’t always perfect, I can say with confidence that we make a great team. Were you always interested in a career in wine? Honestly, I wanted to get as far away from the family business as possible when I was younger. Winemaking was a dream of my father’s, and I wanted to live my own dream. Once my father passed away, however, I knew in my heart that I couldn’t let it go. I am a first-generation American, and I wanted a family legacy to pass on to my kids. What does a typical day in your workweek look like? Each day is different, but I’m always dropping off my two daughters at school or camp (in summer), riding horses at Wölffer Estate Stables, meeting with the marketing team to go over creative brand initiatives, and working at my clothing boutique in Sag Harbor. I end my days cooking dinner for my family, disconnecting from my phone, and spending quality time with my husband and kids. Tell us about your sweet collab with Baked by Melissa! As a woman in a predominantly male-dominated industry, I love supporting other women in business. Partnering with Melissa has enabled something creative and fun for all ages, and what’s better than cupcakes and wine?! What’s next for you? Harvest season is around the corner, which is always an eventful time of the year with the grapes being harvested, wines being made, and planning for our annual Harvest Party on Columbus Day weekend. We also have new ciders coming out this fall that we’re excited about! T

A gin that tastes delicious and is packaged in the most aesthetically pleasing bottle? We approve! Roisin Rigney, marketing executive at the Shed Distillery, breaks down the 411 on Drumshanbo’s Gunpowder Irish Gin. BY SYDNEY SADICK What’s the backstory of your Irish gin? My dad, PJ Rigney, loves to travel, invent, and experiment. He’s always been a “curious mind,” and is the spirit behind everything that comes out of the Shed Distillery. He’s traveled all over the world, bringing home the exotic fruits, herbs, and botanicals that inspired him. So when he set out to create a new Irish gin, he put all that bounty to work! Tell us about the history of the brand. This gin is so unique, we knew we needed to create an equally inventive brand around it. Dad turned to the lore of the beautiful village of Drumshanbo, where it’s rumored the mythical jackalope appears on a whim when lightning strikes. No confirmed reports of a jackalope sighting just yet. Although if you ask my dad, he may give you a different story! What key ingredients can we find in your gin? The recipe for Drumshanbo Gunpowder Irish Gin spotlights 12 exotic botanicals and gunpowder tea. There’s juniper berries from North Macedonia, 44 \ August 2022 \ Spotlight
kaffir limes from Cambodia, and grapefruits and gunpowder tea from China. My favorite, though, is the 12th botanical: meadowsweet. It’s lovely and grows wild around the Shed Distillery, so it’s a little bit of my home country in the mix, representing! What distinguishes this gin from other competitors? Our gin is unlike anything else on the market, either in Europe or the States. It really makes a statement! Eight of the 12 botanicals are put into our medieval copper pot still; the remaining four are put into
the vapor basket, which is a gentler way to extract the nuances of the ingredients. We only use fresh citrus, which creates a smooth, refreshing, easyto-drink gin. Plus, everything we create at the Shed Distillery is crafted by hand; my dad insists on it! The packaging is gorgeous. What’s the inspiration behind it? Like a fabulous piece of custom jewelry, massive attention to detail was paid to every aspect of the bottle. For example, the copper ring on the closure represents our beautiful, medieval copper-pot stills. Each one is molded to my dad’s and our head distiller Brian Taff’s exact specifications. The story behind the bottle itself is one I love to tell. We were on a family holiday in Tallinn, Estonia, which is this beautiful old town. In the center, there was this old-style pharmacy where dad just had to go have a look. He spotted a uniquely beveled, blue glass bottle, which he managed to purchase from the shop’s proprietor. It’s now on a shelf in his lab back at the Shed and was the inspiration behind the actual bottle we use.
What’s the best way to create the ultimate cocktail using your gin? Our gin is so flavorful and exotic that a “simple and classic” approach works best. I love it with a good-quality Indian tonic water, plenty of ice, and a wedge of fresh red grapefruit to enhance the citrus vibrancy. The beauty with Drumshanbo Gunpowder Irish Gin is, you don’t need to be a mixologist to make a fab cocktail! What types of foods work best with it for summer entertaining? Ah, it’s so food-friendly! You have the citrus aspect, as well as spicy botanicals, which means it pairs great with barbecue, Asian noodles, seafood like shrimp or crab legs, and just about any summer salad you can think of. How has the company evolved over the years? I’ve been so lucky because I’ve seen it grow from the beginning. I got to watch my parents set up the Shed with the local community in Drumshanbo and to see it thriving now, knowing it’s also created more than 80 jobs. It’s incredible! They built something authentic from the ground up. To see it go from a little town in rural Ireland to cosmopolitan centers like the Hamptons, Sydney, and Paris— it’s a sight like no other. T

BY SYDNEY SADICK Jenny, your Instagram bio says it all: You’re a NYT best-selling mom and author. Which came more naturally to you, motherhood or writing best sellers? Neither, I’ve been dyslexic, anorexic, and a theater major. Nothing comes easy to me. It’s been nearly a decade since you released your first book. How do you describe your evolution as an author? In the beginning I didn’t have anything to lose, so I swung for the fences in terms of shock value. It was also a different time in terms of comedy. This book might not be as raunchy as my first, but it’s by far my most sophisticated in terms of structure, themes, and style. I also think that in writing fiction I was able to be more vulnerable than I was with my memoirs; it was a way for me to tell my story without telling theirs. Where did your passion for writing originally stem from? Looking back, I guess I always wrote things. But I’m not sure
I considered it a passion. It was more just a way of purging my emotions. I only started writing comedy
because I was frustrated with the lack of opportunities I was getting as an actor. And it’s not like I knew I would be any good at it. I was just annoyed to the point where I got funny. Tell us the backstory of your novel, City of Likes. It’s a satire based on lower Manhattan influencer moms. I basically just wanted to write
a modern-day Heathers. What inspired you to write it? I wasn’t so much inspired as I was haunted. When I moved to NYC, I was a new mom with a demographic of female followers between the ages of 18–35. This made me attractive to brands that started approaching me to sell everything from dog food to panty liners. In the beginning it felt seemingly innocuous, but I started to see the disparity between how motherhood was being presented and motherhood as I was actually living it. I kept asking myself, “If we’re so busy curating parenting online for other people, how present are we in our real lives for our real kids?” What do you think triggered your addiction to getting “likes” on social media? The same thing that triggers all of us. I’m the insecure child of two self-involved baby boomers desperate for external validation. And this app provided me with a sense of self-worth. How have you dealt with it? Instagram is a double-edged sword and a vice that’s easily justified, especially in a culture that values you based on the
little number that hangs over your profile pic. One of the biggest issues I see is the true lack of awareness when it comes to understanding that this “keeping up with the Jones” kind of oversharing actually makes us feel awful about ourselves. Making a concerted effort not to document every moment and instead choose expediting it is for me the first step. Are “momfluencers” as intense as other influencers? I find momfluencers personally to be the most because of the way so many of them exploit their children. Noted. How are you liking NYC life compared to L.A.? I always say that New York when I first arrived was like a giant cruise ship where I could be a mom upstairs but then also disappear downstairs to a life that was still my own. In L.A., I felt so isolated and stuck. You’ve been promoting your book in the Hamptons. What do you enjoy about the area? My favorite thing about the Hamptons, aside from the seafood, farmstands, and swimming pools, is the spotty cell service. I told my husband [Jason Biggs] that I probably wouldn’t have written a book about our society’s addiction to social media if I lived in a place where I could barely get online. Your cookbook, Dictator Lunches, comes out this fall. What can readers expect? This book is my love letter, not just to my kids but to the child I was who desperately wanted the lunch box with the hand-written note. It’s a guide for building lunches that will not only nourish and amuse but also challenge kids to broaden their palates. What’s been your proudest career moment so far? Seeing City of Likes in the front window at BookHampton. And what’s something people would be surprised to learn about you? I speak German. But do I speak Thai? Maybe that should be the cliff-hanger! LEO
July 23–August 22 It’s your season, Leo, so roar, strut, and flaunt. No one does hot August better than you with your shaggy mane and powerful stride. This month, career possibilities abound, so leave your mirror and see what riches the world has in store for you.
SAGITTARIUS
November 22–December 21 Justice-loving Sags will have trouble swallowing the current politics, but you’re not one to grow moss under your hooves. You’ll gallop into August with a dual mission—to have a great time while telling everyone how to finally make the world sane.
ARIES
March 21–April 19 That pair of Hermès Santorini sandals you’ve had your eye on may have to wait till the autumn sales. Your finances have been a bit wobbly lately, so wear your old flats until the 8th. But by the 22nd, you’ll be happily drinking Blue Moon Crystal again. 46 \ August 2022 \ Spotlight
VIRGO
August 23–September 22 Virgo—goddess of justice, innocence, and precision—is the only sign represented by the feminine. Meticulous and reliable, these traits won’t change, but held-in frustrations may emerge. Now is the time to let them go. Business prospects look great.
CAPRICORN
December 22–January 19 Health will be on your mind this August, and where better to heal than at the beach. Your partner may find you a bit more critical than usual; that’s your old need for control. Instead, head down to the sand for some trance dancing with your best buds.
TAURUS
April 20–May 20 The new moon in Leo is like a gong inviting all the cuties to your table. Your energy is the draw, and though often shy, you’ll be expressing freely all over town this month. New admirers abound, but it’s the tried and true that will hold your heart.
LIBRA
September 23–October 22 Balance is your key; now where’s the lock? This month, affections run high with Venus prominent. Caring will be high on your list, but don’t forget to take a drive to Le Bilboquet, where you can prop your toes on the dashboard and let others feed your spirit.
AQUARIUS
January 20–February 18 Being alone doesn’t mean you’re lonely; it’s just a good time for the water bearer to set boundaries. You may want to rethink with whom you’re swimming. The clean-out shift starts on the 8th and by month’s end, new faces will be in your sight line.
GEMINI
May 21–June 20 You could be a bit introverted this month, which is not easy for talky Gemini. But it may be the right move to get out of the sun and read that new lifeinstruction manual—or better yet, write one. Friends won’t leave you alone for long, though.
SCORPIO
October 23–November 21 All that beach jogging has paid off. You’re looking good and love potential is yours. Don’t try to control situations; jump into the waves and see where they carry you. Tied up in knots with a steady partner? A short sail will do wonders for building trust.
PISCES
February 19–March 20 Deep thinkers need discipline because they tend to let their emotions carry them into waters that could be tough to navigate. Take care of yourself first in August. Wake up early for that leisurely beach walk. The world will catch up later.
CANCER
June 21–July 22 You’re usually there with water and treats for everyone else. This month, put yourself in first place and start dreaming of a future you create. Stargazing can help with this, and on the 19th, Uranus gives you permission to see things with wonder eyes.

As a Palm Beacher, what do you find are the biggest similarities and differences between PB and the Hamptons? Both are small-town, seasonal waterfront communities with beautiful landscapes and amazing small businesses, but each region has its own distinct culture that makes it so special. You’re in PB throughout the winter running your hotel. Why is summertime in the Hamptons special to you? There’s something so relaxing and laid-back about being in the Hamptons; it’s transformative. No matter how busy the workday, the stress seems to wash away as I watch the sunset over the bay from my backyard. Where are your favorite Hamptons spots? A few of my favorite restaurants include The Crow’s Nest and Le Bilboquet. I love taking my kids to Elizabeth A. Morton National Wildlife Refuge, as well as to Tuesday night concerts at Main Beach in East Hampton. For shopping, I readily rely upon Blue & Cream and Kirna Zabête to keep my closet stocked. What do you miss most about Palm Beach when you’re not there? Our “Pink Paradise”—The Colony Hotel—and our amazing team that feels like family. Favorite summer Friday lunch destination? Anywhere I can be outdoors and enjoy the sunshine. My kids and I love grabbing a table outside at Sag Pizza and people-watching. You can’t go wrong there; the pizza and salads are top-notch. Thoughts on a Colony in the Hamptons in the future? That would be an absolute dream come true! What are you working on right now? The Colony is turning 75 this November, and to celebrate, we’re executing a full guestroom redesign that we can’t wait to unveil. T Spotlight \ August 2022 \ 47
