ON PALM BEACH
Spotlight Vol.2, No. 1

It’s hard to believe we’re at the halfway point of the Palm Beach season, but boy, is it a great time to be here! It’s back to freezing temps up North, and the sun is brighter than ever down here. All the parties and galas are in full swing; the restaurants are packed; and everyone is dressed to the nines.

Last year around this time, I was living in Palm Beach full-time for the winter. It was my dream ever since I was little to experience what it would be like to not hop on a plane in my favorite magical place that is Palm Beach for months. It was the first time in my life that I felt I was truly focused on one thing: me. And within that focus came the perfect environment for making on my most important career decision: launching Spotlight

Yep, Palm Beach is exactly where came to life. Putting in the countless hours with a view of the beach was the inspiring environment I craved for bringing this magazine together. I believe that everyone has a certain place where they can most easily let their dreams blossom— PB is mine.

For this issue, I’m thrilled to announce that entrepreneur and president of The Colony Hotel, Sarah Wetenhall, is our cover star. We were set up on a blind lunch date by real estate agent Susan Harrison at Compass—she simply thought we’d get along and should know each other. Within five minutes of our conversation—which took place during lunch at The Mark Hotel in New York on Met Gala day of all days!—I felt like we immediately connected and knew she’d be the perfect local subject for one of our issues.

Sarah is responsible for transforming her Pink Paradise destination into one of the most-talkedabout hotels in not only Palm Beach but around the country. It’s officially the hottest spot on the island to see and be seen, and Sarah’s vision has enabled locals, tourists, and even the biggest brands to have one hub in Palm Beach for all things fun, glamorous, and delicious.

Read our exclusive interview about her journey to being at the helm of The Colony on page 24.

Also, get the latest from our resident columnists Dr. Barbara Sturm, Lindsey Metselaar, Lele Sadoughi, Isaac Boots, and Michael Gregson Reinert. Enjoy some content from new contributors DJ and Palm Beacher Mitchell Sozio (who also happens to be my younger brother) on the best men’s accessories and how to improve your mental health with psychologist Dr. Lauren Hazzouri, who you can also regularly find here on the island. As always, be sure to tag @spotlightxmagazine with pics of yourself and our new issue. I can’t wait to see you around The Royal, Worth Avenue, and beyond with your Spotlight!

WHAT’S IN KAMIE LIGHTBURN’S POP BAG

FAVORITE SKINCARE FOR THE SUN:

“Anthelios/La Roche-Posay has been a longtime favorite for sun protection. They pioneered the glowing effect of tinted moisturizer in lieu of foundation 20 years ago (yes, I’m dating myself!) with truly effective SPF. They are the original and the best; all others have complimented them by copying them.”

FAVORITE SWIMWEAR:

“My favorite is what suits my body type and feels stylish at the same time. I enjoy the concept of a swim costume of late. So last year in Hawaii, I discovered that Johanna Ortiz makes swimwear, and the ruffles and design look like a bodysuit you’d wear with anything else pretty and whimsical in your closet. It’s pure genius!”

A FABULOUS POOL/BEACH OUTFIT:

“For pool to lunch, a great cover-up is fun and fabulous because, let’s face it,

it’s unique, often with lots of flare, and not something you can wear every day. So why not go caftan crazy with gold coins or a clear PVC skirt with some chunky rhinestones? There’s so much excitement in pooland beachwear.”

FAVORITE SHOES TO WEAR IN PALM BEACH:

“Anything wedge! Preferably gold, silver, or dazzling white because it’s the place to enjoy all things happy, bright, and beautiful. It’s all about joie de vivre!”

A MUST-HAVE PB ACCESSORY:

“Sunglasses, of course! I’d be the female version of Elton John if I could get away with all the new gorgeous and chic shades there are to enjoy.”

IT’S ALMOST HAMPTONS TIME!

Palm Beachers, take note! Corcoran Real Estate broker Tim Davis is ready to sell you your dream home in the Hamptons.

Tim, you’re Corcoran’s No. 1 agent in the Hamptons. What do you attribute this to?

Being available 24/7 for 43 years, and a commitment to building a business based upon relationships. Also, providing a full-service approach to the clients and customers.

How do you work with clients in both the Hamptons and Palm Beach?

I have several key relationships with brokers embedded in the Palm Beach market whom I trust to handle my clients with white-glove service, just as I would.

Describe the Hamptons real estate market right now to us.

The market remains steady with a strong buyer pool waiting on the sidelines for new inventory to list. We are actively seeking new properties for sale with a vengeance.

For Palm Beachers looking to purchase their first home Out East, what’s important for them to keep in mind?

Working with an experienced broker who understands the nuances of the market from a long-term perspective. Buying location is still one of the key elements in purchasing a property. Act quickly on opportunities that become available with sound advice from an expert.

Many millennials are living in PB full-time now. Why is the Hamptons a great playground for them during the summer?

First off, because it’s a playground, starting with the vast clean and natural outdoor spaces, including the finest beaches in the world. There is something for everyone here within our diverse Villages, which offer a variation of appealing architecture, restaurants, shops, and history. Living in a Harbor Village, a farm setting, in the dunes, or an elegant early Old English village— each has its appeal.

No. 1 tip for people trying to decide what is the right town to purchase a home in Out East? Spend some time experiencing those towns you relate to and where you have access to friends and family. There are so many factors that go into this thought process. T

HOW TO LIVE AN ANTI-INFLAMMATORY LIFESTYLE

Our beauty columnist’s skincare philosophy is focused on combatting inflammation and its consequences. Here, you will learn why this method is key for her via a holistic approach to reducing it and achieving wellness.

Inflammation is the body’s response to irritation and injury, and it can cause everything from acne, premature aging, redness, and enlarged pores to other serious skin diseases and dysfunctions such as psoriasis, rosacea, and perioral dermatitis. My core mission and philosophy as a doctor is to pursue advances in ingredient science and cutting-edge techniques and treatments to reduce inflammation, boost the skin barrier function, and provide essential hydration for healthy, glowing, and beautiful skin. There are two forms of inflammation. Acute inflammation is triggered by internal or external exposure to irritants such as pollution, fragrances, aggressive skincare ingredients, smoking, drinking, and UV radiation. Chronic inflammation is a sustained inflammatory response within the skin that is mediated by the immune system and destroys healthy tissue. Worldwide, three out of five people die due to chronic inflammatory diseases. That’s

why getting inflammation under control is essential for both body and skin health.

When it comes to skincare, the goal is to soothe and reduce inflammation, not cause it. The biggest misconception is that you need to be aggressive toward your skin, rather than

provide protection of skin barrier function, hydration, nutrition, and skin healing.

An anti-inflammatory lifestyle extends beyond skincare to movement, sleep, mental health, and nutrition. For instance, changes to diet have been shown in clinical

Our bodies don’t always get everything they need for healthy glowing skin from our diet and lifestyle, so I created my supplements, STURM INSIDE, to address any deficiencies.

It’s also imperative that you prioritize a good night’s sleep (I’m in bed by 9 p.m. most evenings), enjoy daily exercise, and reduce stress through techniques such as meditation. I avoid bedtime high-energy visible exposure from my mobile phone and computer, which triggers the stress hormone cortisol, by making sure I leave my phone outside my bedroom. I also have a sauna in my bathroom. It’s a tremendous tool for skin and overall health and well-being and has been clinically shown to improve skin barrier function, regulate sebum flow, and improve cardiovascular and muscular health.

nurturing. Harsh ingredients, acid peels, and lasers destroy healthy skin cells. If your skin feels comfortable, hydrated, and isn’t experiencing irritation, redness, or dysfunction, that’s a hallmark of effective skincare.

The ingredient science in my molecular skincare collection works to combat inflammationmediated oxidation and to

trials to dramatically reduce inflammation, so I recommend eating an anti-inflammatory diet rich in fatty fish, avocados, cherries, broccoli, cabbage, green leafy vegetables, tomatoes, almonds, and nuts. Also, avoid inflammatory substances such as alcohol, sugar, excessive salt, and processed or fried foods.

Occasionally I’ll also have an IV infusion at one of my spa and boutiques to boost energy and restore wellness.

Leading an anti-inflammatory lifestyle and taking care of your skin will have an immediate and long-term effect on both skin aging and overall health. It’s exciting for me to see how my patients are taking care of themselves and discovering the STURMGLOW™. T

Just Move It!

LET’S GET PHYSICAL—ON THE ROAD

Our resident fitness columnist is traveling again, taking his TORCH’D fitness method all around the globe. Here, Isaac Boots shares his tips with Spotlight for working out while you’re on the move!

Planes, trains, and automobiles—these days when I catch up with friends, whether over lunch, text, or perusing Instagram, I’m amazed how much people are traveling.

When I hear that voice in my head telling me to order a mimosa and just relax, I know it’s time to move. It’s so easy to say tomorrow, Friday, next week, and so on.

I’ve found that making

The flow of oxygen into your muscles will help you replenish, give you a kick of energy to unpack, and help you to remember to hydrate and eat a healthy meal.

Imagine now, you’re at

Our bodies are meant to be in motion, but it feels as if our lives are running at a full sprint with the memory that not so long ago we couldn’t take that summer trip to Europe, or go to our favorite restaurant in the Hamptons, or spend a weekend in Palm Beach.

The hardest part of travel for me, and I’m sure many of us, is prioritizing my physical health. I love to get away and am so grateful that it’s part of my job now. There have been days when even getting TORCH’D in my hotel room seems like a lot of energy.

movement the first thing I do every morning is the best way to get energized for my day, and then my whole energy level shifts. Sometimes I’ll do an hour, or sometimes 20 minutes, but it inspires me to remain active throughout my day and make other healthy choices.

I think it’s important to get settled at your destination and then workout immediately. Travel can be so hard on our bodies, and the urge to snack on a handful of Gummy Bears or eat the bun (or bread basket) they give you with your meal is too tempting.

the San Domenico Palace in Taormina, Italy, like Jennifer Coolidge in The White Lotus enjoying a delicious lunch at Anciovi, the restaurant overlooking the gorgeous Mediterranean. How on earth is it possible to resist an Aperol spritz and a slice of pizza?

The answer is, it’s not! But hope is not lost because the quality of what you’re eating is fresh and locally farmed, and lunch is the perfect meal to indulge. You have so much time to digest it, and your body will need the replenishment from your morning workout.

you can eat a delicious salad with some fresh fish, and you’ll strike the balance we all need to experience the many incredible places and cultures around the world.

I know it seems daunting, but if you can do it 80 percent of the time, then you’re in good shape. Consistency is key to truly living a healthy life, but it isn’t always possible. Sometimes it’s good to indulge and enjoy the fruits of your labor. It definitely tastes sweeter when you move with the motion of the ocean. T

It’s time to pull out all your warm weather wears! This season, I’m leaving behind my romantic flowy dresses and loose tousled hair, and searching for all my shift dresses and modern-cut silhouettes. I’m trimming my hair to a clean bob and perfecting my cat-eye sunglass, sculptural earring, and slim headband look. Let’s keep the clothes clean and allow the accessories do their own thing. For our Spring collection, called the Modern Collector, I was inspired by the impressive artwork from the Peggy Guggenheim museum in Venice. Think of the heavy black Calder sculptures mixed with the stripes of the gondoliers and soft blues from the canals.

If you’re looking for some new style inspiration this spring,

HOW TO LOOK COOL IN THE SPRING

The sun is almost always shining in Palm Beach, but that doesn’t mean you should be ignoring the change of seasons when it comes to your wardrobe. Accessories designer and Spotlight contributor Lele Sadoughi shares how you can achieve the coolest looks of the season.

here are four tips for achieving that perfectly cool look!

1. Let the accessories be your paint and your clothes be a blank canvas.

With a simple-cut dress, I’ll be wearing our checkered sunglasses on repeat, with our bright pink sun hat and oversize mobile-like earrings. Let the accessories shine by mixing patterns, shapes, and colors.

2. Change your handbag with every outfit. Put away your trusty leather satchel and pick up something fun and frilly. We updated our classic Tabitha top-handle handbag to a soft stripe with fringe ruffles and pearl details. It’s a definite conversation-starter.

3. Matching accessories is the easiest way to look polished.

Ready for the beach? You can pack our custom-printed pareo and matching headband to update your swimsuit look. Go from shore time to lunchtime in a flash!

4. Don’t forget about the sunnies.

Palm Beach is the perfect place to show off your sunglass game. Try our pearl-rimmed Elton’s or the Peggy, our version of Ms. Guggenheim’s iconic butterfly glasses. Whether you’re in Florida or walking through the sculpture garden overlooking the canals of Venice, sometimes it’s easier to perfect your accessory game when you envision a place and time. So, this season, pull out your clean basics and invest in some fabulous Lele Sadoughi accessories. T

THE BEST OF WEST PALM

If you’re tired of going to the same five restaurants, look no further than a quick trip across the bridge to West Palm Beach—if you dare!

With young professionals flocking from New York to Palm Beach County like freshly hatched snowbirds, West Palm Beach has become a hub for culture, culinary delights, and creativity. Here are my recommendations.

E.R. BRADLEY’S

There’s no place like the tiki-style bar with outdoor seating and hammocks where the piña coladas are flowing. It’s a must! Put your phone on airplane mode and let loose making new friends in what has become a hub for young locals to meet. You won’t regret it!

THE NORTON MUSEUM OF ART

Every Friday, the place to be is “Art After Dark.” I highly recommend the upcoming exhibition, “At the Dawn of a New Age: Early Twentieth-Century American Modernism.” After all, the Norton Museum of Art is the hub for all things culture.

THE BRIGHTLINE

Located in the heart of West Palm Beach, the high-speed train between West Palm and Miami is perfect for an exciting weekend away. Snag some premium tickets and enjoy the Brightline lounge before boarding while you rosé all the way. While in Miami, check out the Rubell Museum for a much-needed dose of Yayoi Kusama, whose collection with Louis Vuitton just launched. It’s the collab of the moment.

HAVANA

This longtime favorite restaurant on South Dixie Highway is open 24/7, and is perfect for a late-night snack. I recommend the Cuban sandwich and tres leches cake. McDonald’s closes at midnight in West Palm, so this is the perfect alternative when you’re looking to satisfy those nocturnal cravings!

THE SQUARE WEST PALM BEACH

Sweat out the tequila at what’s become the new “It Place” at SoulCycle’s new home for the season. Everything from Pura Vida to Harry’s restaurant (coming soon!) can be found in this fun West Palm Beach spot. On Sundays, enjoy the culinary market, which offers fresh seasonal food and artisanal pop-ups. There’s so much to do, you’ll never have a dull moment! T

Singles aren’t the only ones who need recommendations for going out and about. Couples, you’re included, too! Our resident dating expert breaks down some great ideas for what you can do with your loved one on the island this spring. BY

Hi, Spotlight fam! Last month we spoke about activities to do when you’re single. Hopefully that advice worked and now you’re in a relationship! Either way, these activities are also great for dating. Palm Beach is one of the most romantic cities to fall in love, and one of the best places to vacation for lovers as well. There’s so much to take in, and so much to offer for couples. Here are my suggestions:

GO FOR A BIKE RIDE

Bike riding releases endorphins. And as the great Elle Woods says in Legally Blonde, endorphins make you happy. Take advantage of this perfect weather and take out bikes with your partner. If you’re not an experienced biker (like myself), I recommend the Lake Trail. Enjoy a leisurely ride through the backyards of some of the biggest and most over-thetop houses in Palm Beach. Ride down the Intracoastal Waterway, and you’ll end up on Worth Avenue around some of the best shops.

OPT FOR A SPA DAY

What’s a better activity than a steam and a couples

massage? Palm Beach is populated with some of the best spas in Florida and definitely worth checking out with your significant other. The Breakers, Eau Spa, and The Four Seasons all have amazing facilities, and sometimes there’s nothing that spices up your relationship more than a little R&R.

A ROMANTIC MEAL

If you’re a foodie couple, you’re in the right place. Palm Beach has so many amazing restaurants. If you’re looking for a low-key spot that’s unique and amazing, you have to check out Oceano Kitchen. The menu is new and changes every day by chefs Jeremy and Cindy Bearman, who also happened to be husband and wife. Wanting something a little fancier where you can dress up a little? Check out Café Boulud at the Brazilian Court Hotel.

GET CULTURED AT THE KRAVIS CENTER

If you haven’t been to this performing arts center in Palm

Beach, it’s time to add it to your list. The Raymond F. Kravis Center has a great February line-up featuring the Miami City Ballet, gospel music , orchestras, films, operas, and so much more. Head to the website at kravis.org/performancecalendar to learn more about what they have on their schedule.

SOAK UP THE SUN

There’s nothing wrong with a little Vitamin D. In fact, it’s shown to improve your mood, boost your sex drive, and aid in fertility. As if you needed more reason to lie on the beach and relax! While everyone on the East Coast is freezing, you should be taking advantage of these beautiful beach moments with your partner. Walks in the sand, ocean salt in your hair, and all that serotonin makes for a day well spent.

For more tips on dating, you can follow @wemetatacme on Instagram or listen to We Met At Acme wherever you listen to podcasts. My husband and I will be in Palm Beach celebrating our anniversary in February, and we can’t wait to check off at least three items from this list! T

Use These Palm Beach Lifestyle Hacks to Improve Your Mental Health

Licensed psychologist Dr. Lauren Hazzouri shares what you can do to improve your mental health while living or vacationing in the paradise known as Palm Beach.

Now that we’ve all had time to settle into 2023, can we please ditch the idea of “New Year, New You”?

It’s hard to feel good about ourselves and our lives in a society obsessed with being more, getting better, and achieving our best selves (by the ripe old age of 30!). Telling ourselves that we’re not enough and must do better, year in and year out, doesn’t lead to positive personal growth. Instead, such nasty inner dialogue adds to the shame that keeps us stuck. This year, I challenge you to take responsibility for your mental wellness by using science-backed strategies that allow for increased emotional regulation, self-esteem, and mood.

To start, let’s focus on lifestyle—eating, sleeping, exercising, and limiting media/ social media exposure. Here’s the deal: What you eat, how much you sleep and move, and how often you scroll on your phone significantly affects how you think, feel, and behave. To increase your mental health baseline, lifestyle is key. Luckily, there are endless ways to improve your lifestyle patterns and boost mental health in Palm Beach (my happy place!) that will feel less like the hard work you’ve done in past years to get better and more like the self-care you require to feel good longterm. Here are four PB-specific lifestyle hacks to improve your mental health!

SNACK SMARTLY AT CELIS JUICE BAR IN ROYAL POINCIANA PLAZA.

You can’t expect to feel good without nourishing your brain and your body. Instead of overhauling your entire diet, start by eating more nutrient-rich snacks. My favorite late afternoon pick-me-up in Palm Beach is Celis’ Unbeetable fresh-pressed juice, which is made with beet root, carrot, ginger, and apple. With each sip, I feel like I’m doing something good for my brain and my body, because I am.

MOVE YOUR BODY AT THE YOGA SOCIETY IN WEST PALM BEACH.

Personally, I’m a runner and enjoy my boost of serotonin, the neurotransmitter that makes us feel good, through runs on the beach. However, my friends rave about The Yoga Society, and the benefits of movement and mindfulness on our mental health cannot be overstated. The Yoga Society is said to be “a society of loving people.” Just the thought of there being such a place yields hope!

JOURNAL DAILY ON PAPER FROM IL PAPIRO ON WORTH AVENUE.

Putting away your phone and making sense of yourself through narrative techniques like journaling can be helpful, especially in establishing identity. A social and emotional goal of adulthood is to be able to answer the question, “Who am I?” Start on beautiful paper from this store, which also offers Italian desk accessories, journals, frames, and letter openers made in Florence.

SLEEP SOUNDLY ON LUXURY BED LINENS FROM LORI JAYNE ON SOUTH COUNTY ROAD.

Sleep impacts mental health, and very few people get enough of it! To improve your sleep, ditch electronics two hours before bedtime and make yourself comfortable. Personally, I love Lori Jayne’s monogrammed bed linens because the underside of the duvet is the bed sheet— no more getting all tangled up! T

Whether it’s about Selena Gomez or sharing personal conversations, they’re fun and just the bite of toast you need to get your day started.

ARCHETYPES WITH MEGHAN MARKLE

Whether you like the current Duchess of Sussex or not, we can all agree that the discussions about Meghan Markle are highly charged. From her days as Rachel Zane in the legal world of Suits to being the real-life wife of Prince Harry and their royal trials and tribulations, the media focus on the couple has been intense. This podcast debuted in August 2022 and won a People’s Choice Award for favorite pop podcast. The focus is on female stereotypes and features conversations with famous women. Topics include “The Misconception of Ambition” with Serena Williams, “The Duality of Diva” with Mariah Carey, and “Breaking Down the Bimbo” with Paris Hilton and Iliza Shlesinger.

Her latest episodes feature tips for getting organized from the founders of The Home Edit, improving your relationships, and skincare with dermatologist Dr. Sam Ellis. Worth a listen!

DEAR GABBY: BECOME THE HAPPIEST PERSON YOU KNOW

Advice guru Gabby Bernstein is open that she isn’t a trained psychologist or medical doctor and defers listeners to seek a medical professional if needed. With that being said, she’s on a mission to motivate and inspire. Bernstein is a best-selling author of eight books. Her weekly show aims to educate, inspire, and support one’s personal journey toward inner peace. The most recent episodes cover how to find a way through every block, addiction, and release stress. She uses all the current wellness lingo; it’s worth listening to her contemporary and on-target advice. Gabby just gets it!

Bruce Bozzi is the fourthgeneration co-owner of the iconic family-run steakhouse The Palm. He’s currently the executive VP overseeing all aspects of operations. Bozzi is married to talent agent Bryan Lourd. Together, they have a daughter, Ava. His new podcast series invites us to join him for lunch with Hollywood powerhouses, both in front of and behind the scenes. Early episodes have included Jennifer Aniston, Daniel Craig, and Kathy Hilton. Executives have included talent agent Ron Meyer and mogul Barry Diller. ■

The Suite Life of Entrepreneur Sarah Wetenhall

President and owner of The Colony Hotel, Sarah Wetenhall, has transformed the Palm Beach destination into one of the most iconic hotels in the country. Equipped with a background in fashion PR and a knack for knowing what Palm Beachers and vacationers want, she’s leading the pack for female entrepreneurs in changing the hospitality industry today. Read on, as the Spotlight is now on Sarah!

Sarah, I think at one point everyone had a dream of living in a hotel, especially during childhood—and you actually get to run one! Did you ever think that you’d be at the helm of one of Palm Beach’s most iconic hotels? While we never imagined that we would actually own The Colony someday, [my husband] Andrew and I did spend decades visiting the hotel as guests. From those visits, we had so many hopes and dreams of what this special place could become, with the right vision, leadership, and guidance. We always knew that The Colony had such potential, and we felt a deep motivation to ensure its continued relevancy for generations to come. For those who don’t know the backstory, how did you land as president and CEO of The Colony?

My late father-in-law, Bob Wetenhall Sr., acquired the hotel in 1970 and, together with his business partner, they owned the property for many years. Even after his ownership ended, Bob kept an apartment in the penthouse of the hotel. I first came to the hotel as a college student with my now husband, and we have been on property every year since, so the hotel has held a special place in our family’s life for decades. Andrew and I wholly acquired The Colony in late 2016. You’re originally from Blue Springs, Missouri. What originally brought you to New York City?

My handsome husband, Andrew, and I met at Vanderbilt University. Upon graduation, he was recruited to join a large Wall Street firm, while I secured a job in the PR department at Calvin Klein. We decided to make the move together, although it was less of an adjustment for him as he had roots in NYC, having grown up in nearby Rye, New York. Tell us about your background in fashion. You’ve worked at some of the industry’s most influential brands!

Good design does speak to

me. I started my career in the public relations offices of Dolce & Gabbana, Calvin Klein, and Hugo Boss. It was through those brands that I learned the importance of brand identity and clear brand values. What does a typical day in your role as CEO look like?

After making breakfast for my three children and dropping them off at school, I try to start my day with an hour of yoga to clear my head. Then I usually have back-to-back Zooms if I’m in New York, or in-person meetings if I’m in Palm Beach. These meetings can include everything from renovation updates and budget reviews to marketing strategy, event planning, and brand partnerships. I’m frequently on the phone with hotel leadership to ensure that everything we do is up to the highest standard, personalized, and, of course, on brand. After various meetings and brainstorm sessions, I either spend time with family or head to important community and philanthropic events. How do you balance your time between your home base, NYC, and Palm Beach? And then, of course, the Hamptons?

With a lot of miles on Delta and JetBlue! I generally alternate weeks in NYC and PB during the winter, and we spend all school breaks in Palm Beach. June through September, we’re in Sag Harbor, and I will pop down to Palm Beach as needed during those summer months.

When I was growing up, The Colony was where my grandparents’ generation wanted to be. Now, it’s where 20–30 year olds want to spend their time. How did you tap into this next wave of clientele?

The Colony is a multigenerational hotel, so we hope to be where your grandparents and your peers want to be. We were able to reconnect with younger guests, in addition to their older counterparts, by offering thoughtful and well-curated programming that’s not onesize-fits-all. A book signing may appeal to a more mature

audience, while a DJ set from Pamela Tick engages a younger crowd. We were one of the first establishments in Palm Beach to create experiences specifically for the newer wave of younger adult guests. It’s the hotel’s 75thanniversary season. How did you ring it in?

It’s a season-long anniversary! We kicked off The Colony Hotel’s 75th-anniversary season with our Southampton pop-up at Christie’s and the sponsorship of the Hampton Classic Horse Show. Then we recently hosted The Colony Ball to ring in the hotel’s 75th New Year’s Eve. But the parties and events will last all season long! The hotel just underwent a major renovation. Give us all the details, please!

The Colony just unveiled a full guest room redesign in celebration of the hotel’s 75th

anniversary. The redesigned rooms debuted a capsule furniture collection by Society Social for The Colony Hotel, an 11-piece collection, two years in the making, designed in collaboration with myself and Society Social founder, Roxy Owens. It’s available to consumers and to the trade, and features artisan-crafted rattan and faux bamboo pieces, together with select upholstery items, and is inspired by oldworld Palm Beach. It captures the tropical glamour typical of The Colony Hotel, as well as the playful and vivacious spirit of both brands. Interior walls feature Farrow & Ball paint in heritage colors from the brand’s signature palette, as well as a custom-formulated “Colony Pink” on the hotel’s famous exterior. Renowned fabric house Schumacher also collaborated on the project to re-create

heritage designs customized in pink, green, and blue colors exclusive to the hotel. Outdoors, an analogous collection of lounge and dining furniture by Brown Jordan debuted poolside. What are your top entrepreneurial tips for women looking to run their own business today?

1. Trust your vision and don’t dilute it. What will make you successful is your unique perspective.

2. Learn to let go. You will need to delegate and accept that not every part of your life will look

perfect all the time while your business grows.

3. Surround yourself with people who are willing to learn from you, and that you can also learn from.

What’s the greatest challenge of running the hotel?

Running a hotel is 24/7, 365 days a year. The business is literally never closed, so it’s challenging to find a day off.

Most rewarding aspect?

Seeing the hotel literally transform in front our eyes, not just physically in terms of the restoration, but in terms of the vibrancy and life it now has.

What’re you working on now? Since the completion of the guest room redesign, I’ve been working on partnerships and hotel residencies with Dolce & Gabbana, artist-in-residence Ashley Longshore, Asprey, and Dr. Barbara Sturm.

Looking ahead, what are your next goals for The Colony?

We just completed The Colony’s dedicated retail space, The Colony Edit, and I’m enjoying creating and sourcing special apparel, home, gifts, and accessories for the space. We also have two exciting villa design partnerships on the horizon to be revealed this fall. Can we expect other locations? Never say never! We’re actively looking to expand The Colony brand to complimentary markets. Do you have a life motto? Life is about juggling many balls in the air; the key is knowing which balls are rubber and which are glass. When a ball has to drop, make sure it’s the right one! T

HOW MILLENNIALS CAN BUY THEIR HAMPTONS DREAM HOME

Let’s face it: Buying a home as a millennial can be intimidating, especially in luxury markets like Palm Beach and the Hamptons. But with the help of the right broker and a path for landing what you want, the process can be far less daunting. Here, Saunders & Associates broker Cathy Tweedy, who originally hailed from the advertising world at Ogilvy, shares her expert advice with Spotlight

How can millennials feel less intimidated by the purchasing process?

How common is it for people to do that?

The Hamptons had been moving toward becoming a year-round community, and COVID accelerated the desire to have Hamptons access beyond the summer. With the ability to work from anywhere, there’s definitely a market for winter rentals. It just isn’t what we saw in 2020 and 2021. Tell us about the experience clients will get when working with you.

Cathy,

what’s trending in the buyer’s market Out East?

With the white-hot market of the past couple of years, the inventory hasn’t been able to keep up with demand. The result is sales at a higher cost. And while we’re seeing a move from ambitious pricing to more real-value pricing, it’s not a slash-and-burn situation.

Why should Palm Beachers consider buying in the Hamptons this year?

It’s the perfect antidote to PB summers! While everyone hears the national press on the state of real estate, I’m sure Palm Beachers know all real estate is local. The Hamptons is a unique market that’s bucking the trend. This market continues its decades-long trajectory of going up. And, if challenged, this market flattens…it doesn’t go down. It continues to be a unique and investable market.

What’s a great starter home for a millennial looking to purchase in the Hamptons?

When I was thinking about buying a Hamptons house or a larger NYC apartment, my business partner asked me which would enhance the quality of my life. It was simply a house in the Hamptons. Millennials are said to value flexibility and work-life balance, and a house in the Hamptons provides the setting to do that. While there’s really no one answer, I’d say, the best starter home for a millennial is one that they’re excited about and meets their truly individual needs.

Understand what they can buy within their own comfort zone. If they’re going to finance the purchase, they should talk to a mortgage broker to understand what will work for them based on their financial position. If not financing, they should still have a sense of what costs are involved in buying and running the house. Also, find a broker who will work with them to help guide them through the process and also provide objective counsel. Any predictions for the rental market?

With the lack of inventory of houses for sale, it’s likely we’ll see a strong rental market as people want to be here, whether they own or rent.

Hugh Jackman put his East Hampton home up for rent during the winter months.

When working with a buyer or seller, everything I do is to further their thinking about: how the market is doing and what that means for them; on the nuances of the different villages and hamlets; what issues they should consider when buying or selling; and how to evaluate the pros and cons of various opportunities. My goal is to guide them with objective counsel, so they can truly make a decision that’s right for them. T

3 THINGS PALM BEACHERS SHOULD DO IN THE HAMPTONS

As Told by Cathy Tweedy

T Enjoy the beaches ,day and night. There’s nothing like spending a day on the beach with friends and family, and have that day turn into a picnic dinner (think grilled lobster and corn on the cob) with a campfire on the beach. I do love a fire by the shore!

T Don’t miss the sunrises and sunsets. They’re glorious. Take note of the light; it’s why so many artists come here to create.

T Be open to explore everywhere. There are so many special areas here that they’ve probably never heard about. Seek them out!

Jupiter’s transit in your opposing sign Taurus is lucky for you. It might be romantic, but it could be a career collaboration, too. You’re in Florida—wake up early, run on the beach, and take full advantage of what this special cosmic gift has in mind for you.

SAGITTARIUS

November 22–December 21

Your inner child is awakening with Aries in the 5th house, reminding you of the joys of play, laughing, and creativity. It’s a good time to open up an orange stand, write a new version of The Palm Beach Story, or anything you’ve been dreaming of.

CAPRICORN

December 22–January 19

What better place than PB to deal with underprocessed stories. The sun will bleach out all the memories that need to be reassigned, and though you tend to be conservative, it’s time to break with tradition and create your own personal truths.

AQUARIUS

January 20–February 18

Pluto is giving you a kick in the pants to unwrap the secrets that have bound you. Sounds rough, but it’s a good and liberating thing, and Aquarians like freedom most of all. Time for major shifts, which are only temporarily uncomfortable.

1. SHIP MAGAZINES TO NEW BRAND PROSPECTS

Most of the start of my year is spent meeting with new brands around the country to collaborate with Spotlight, so I like to send out print copies in order for them to get a feel for our mag! My American Express Business Platinum Card® helps make that easy. With my Card, I can earn 1.5X Membership Rewards® points on eligible purchases at U.S. shipping providers. Terms and points cap apply.

Networking over meals in Palm Beach are my absolute favorite. I’m making a reservation for dinner at Sant Ambroeus with colleagues via Resy, which I find to be an easy and hassle-free way to book tables.

Eligible American Express Card Members are able to add American Express Offers from some of their favorite brands right from the American Express® App, and earn rewards on qualifying purchases. Terms apply. Here I am looking for a new outfit to wear for some upcoming TV appearances. Having the right outfit is a fun and important part of my job.

I have to go back to NYC to get ready for the next issue of Spotlight! With travel at an all-time high, the American Express Business Platinum Card® delivers incredible benefits, such as an annual statement credit for a CLEAR® membership, a fee credit for TSA PreCheck® or Global Entry (which comes with access to TSA PreCheck®), and complimentary airport lounge access to 1,400-plus lounges across 140 countries with the American Express Global Lounge Collection®. Plus, I get 5X Membership Rewards points on flights booked through AmexTravel.com. Terms apply.

I’m so excited that NYC favorite Julien Farel has opened a salon in Palm Beach. Here I am with a fresh blowout, just in time for my virtual TV segment airing soon!
