MESSAGE FROM

Following is the story of St. Martin's for the school year 19561957. Pictured here are the students and staff in their broad array of activities which have constituted the pattern of our school life. Fond memories, moments of gl ory, spiritual reflections, true friendships, sincere achievement, coupled with the gaiety and frivolity of youth are all 'silhouetted' in the different sections of this book.

This record of the school year just past, is, at the same time, a prologue as well. In the future, you, the students, will look to this as your beginning. The beginning, in the sense that along with the basic academic knowledge you have gained,

MR. ELLSWORTH 0. VAN SLATE Headmaster MRS. ERIC R. PHILLPOTT Secretary

THE HEADMASTER

your experiences at school this past year have in a measure helped to shape you as a personality - your habits, your attitudes, your values. We, your teachers, express the prayerful hope that these experiences will foster continued growth toward a useful, productive, satisfying adulthood.

To the editor, the sponsors, and the staff of this fourth volume of THE SHIELD, we are deeply grateful. The application of their combined skills and creative efforts, plus many hours of diligent labor, have resulted in this fine 1956-1957 Annua 1, which merits a 'well done!· from all of us.

SEASON HXGHJLXGHTS

ST. MARTIN'S 14 - NEWMAN 12

This victory was a result of determination and accurate extra point kicks. Although the Saints didn't rack up a big score, they completely outplayed the weaker Newman Greenies.

ST. MARTIN'S 12 - CHALMETTE 6

Looking good on defense and even better on offense, the Saints put together a potent aerial attack and a powerful ground game to overpower the Owls.

ST. MARTIN'S 7 - COUNTRY DAY 13

The over-confident Saints again couldn't get rolling on offense and were upset by the hustling Cajuns. A recove!ed fumble set up the Saints lone touchdown.

ST. MARTIN'S 13 - BURAS 12

Having been held scoreless in the first half by the heavily favored Buras Wildcats, the determined Saints began to click in the third quarter and came from behind to win a real thriller.

ST. MARTIN'S O - SACRED HEART 45

The Saints couldn't seem to get moving on offense and showed that there was a great deal of improvement needed on defense as they bowed to the much heavier Sacred Heart team.

ST. MARTIN'S O - RACELAND 26

The classy Saints looked very good against the highly touted Raceland team. They repeatedly marched through the strong Cub line but never quite made it all the way.

ST. MARTIN ' S 20 - RIDGEWOOD 13

The Saints won their Homecoming game and ended their football season in fine fashion as they trounced the Ridgewood Eagles. It was a hard-fought contest marked by spirit and action galore.

ST. MARTIN'S 20 - N.O.A. 0

The Junior Cadets had a heavy team, but the J. V. Saints outclassed them completely. The light, speedy Saints swept the ends consistently, and this proved to be the margin of victory.

ST, MARTIN'S 14 - COUNTRY DAY 6

The Saints made it three straight as they beat the Daisies for the Rive rside J. V. crown. The Daisy ends were strong, but runs up the middle made the game for the little Saints.

ST. MARTIN'S 46 - NEWMAN 21

The Saints downed Newman as they racked up their biggest score of the season. In this game they employed the two platoon system for the first time. It worked very well.

The Varsity ended the season with a better than average 14-10 record. The highlight of the season was the winning of the Consolation Game at the Norco Tournament. The victory gave St. Martin ' s their first trophy from Norco since they began attending the tournament.

In the Riverside League the Saints did not fare as well, however. They did manage to end up with a 7-7 record. Among the accomplishments of the Saint season were victories over Ridgewood, Golden Meadow, Hahnville, Port Sulphur, and Woodlawn. Although the Saints lost to East Jefferson, Newman, and Country Day, the team played excellent ball and gave a very good account of themselves.

JUNIOR V ARSKTY BASKETBALL

Having only one defeat, the spirited Saint Junior Varsity tied for the Riverside Championship. The team finished the season with only two defeats - one coming at the hands of the Triple A Fortier Tarpons and the other in league competition against Counuy Day. Among the seventeen wins were the victories over Chalmette, Fortier, and an upset over the favored Newman Greenies. The team had a lot of hustle, exhibited excellent sportsmanship, and were the best J. V. ever witnessed at St. Martin's.

The high school dram a tics group presented, in addition to the Christmas play, a series of skits. These were given in the a udio-visual aids room which was converted by means of the imagination, into a little theatre. The skits presented were two television playlets, "In Darkened Rooms" and "Blind Date," and a one-act Ch i nese play entitled "The Thrice- Promised Bride. "

The eighth grade dramatics class presented a puppet show in cooperation with the handicrafts class which made the puppets. The dramatics stu'dents dramatized two Uncle Rhemus stories and enacted the parts.

"Go, Peeps, go!!!"

G liRLS 9

In honor of girl athletes a banquet was held in the Spring of '56. The Seventh and Eighth grades served, the Freshmen decorated, the Sophomores entertained with "Fashion Follies by Sophomore Dollies," and the Juniors and Seniors were guests. The captains of the high school teams and the outstanding Seventh and Eighth graders received special awards.

ATHLETIC

BANQUETS

At the '56 Spring Boys' Athletic Banquet, addresses were heard by Tony Sardisco and Don Miller, football stars from Tulane University. Also, short talks were made by Coach Porter and Eddie Price, the famous Tul.anian who Played Professional football.

After the '56 football captains were announced, awards were given to outstanding football and basketball players.

Re cognition was given to members of both varsity and junior varsity football and basketball teams. Cheerleaders were commended for their constant high spirits and loyal support of the teams.

Field trips are encouraged at St. Martin's, Many points of interest in the greater New Orleans area are visited each year by students. Also, longer trips to such places as the Evangeline country, the state capitol and even the national capitol have been made by class groups. A11 trips are planned with the idea in mind of broadening the education of the students. An example of this is the trip taken by the fifth grade to the International Trade Mart.

CHRISTM A S PLA Y

St. Martin's Annual Christmas program was presented on the twentieth of December. THE OTHER WISE MAN by Henry Van Dyke, was dramatized by Hardee Kilgore and produced through the cooperation of students and faculty, under the sponsorship of the Student Council.

The story was related by a narrator and enacted by high school students. A girls' chorus , singing the traditional Christmas songs, provided background music. The correlation of music, scenery, lighting, costuming, and the powerful story itself made this a memorable performance

The St. Martin's Style Show, which was presented by the Mothers' Club, was held during one of the beginning weeks of school. Several members of the faculty plus a raft of the student body took part in the gala event. The varying scenes depicted different events of the school year. Everyone agreed that it was one of the best style shows ever given at the school, and those of future years will have to be spectacular to top this.

JHONOR D AY

One of the final activities during the school year is Honor Day. At this time officers and representatives of the Student Council, the Shield, and the Halo are announced and special awards are rendered to those who merit them.
