United Way of Northern Utah is fortunate to team up with the Standard-Examiner and community partner agencies to bring you this Summer Kids Catalog.

Summertime is such a wonderful time for children, bringing warm weather, get-togethers with family and friends, and longer days with fun exploration and learning. Yes, learning doesn’t stop in the summer. The numerous meaningful opportunities listed here hopefully will provide such experiences for the children in our community.

We hope these exciting learning experiences will lift the lives of our youth and help prepare them for a successful tomorrow. Have a wonderful summer!

CCS believes that no one should worry about how they’re going to get their next meal.

Applications, reviews, and renewals for the food program are accepted only on the following: Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 9 to 11 a.m. EXCEPT on Thursday night and Saturday morning distribution. Please consult the current calendar.

Please bring:

 Picture ID for all adults in the household 18 years of age or older. We no longer ask for or accept Social Security cards as a form of ID.

 Proof of address: Utility bill — power, gas or water; current rental agreement.

 For children under 18: Bring birth certificates, school enrollment record or immunization records (must have child’s name and birthdate printed on it).

 Proof of income for all adults: Current check stubs, Social Security award letter or other income sources.

All of us need help sometimes. If you or someone you know needs access to food, CCS is here to help.

To apply for our food program the following documents are needed to submit application:

Only one person per address can apply for food. All people at the address must be included on the card. Apartment numbers listed must have a separate entrance from the main house, separate cooking facilities and receive mail with an identified apartment number.

OGDEN ROPES COURSE

Ages: 7 and up utahscouts.org/cope

Team members are challenged to become more aware of themselves and others and to discover their strengths and limitations. For groups that already know each other well, COPE (Challenging Outdoor Personal Experience) builds on this knowledge to improve communication and leadership skills. COPE is a great mechanism for rapidly developing a strong sense of team membership. Beyond all these lofty objectives, COPE is fun! Course features ground and high ropes activities.

So, you want to work with animals? Spend a day with our wildlife specialist to get a taste of this job. Enjoy all the fun of camp along with real-world experience in this hands-on animal adventure. Get up close and personal with our resident birds as you learn what it takes to keep them happy and healthy. Try your hand at radio-tracking and food preparation and race your fellow campers in tying a proper falconer’s knot. Don’t miss out on this opportunity to get a sneak peek at wildlife care, something that’s usually only available for volunteers over the age of 18.

Caring for Creatures – Ages 11-13

Snakes, salamanders and spiders! All our critters need care. Help us feed, clean and care for our smaller critters and learn what animals in captivity need. Feed a tarantula, exercise a desert tortoise and clean a milk snake’s cage during this day devoted to caring for creatures.

Join us for a week-long adventure discovering and investigating the ying, crawling and slithering creatures that call Ogden Nature Center home. Play games and enjoy activities that help us understand and appreciate the creepy crawly critters all around us.

FAMILY CAMPS

Family Campout: Songs, Skits, Stars and S’mores

July 7, 6 p.m., to July 8, 9 a.m. ‘

$100/family of 5 and $8 each additional family member Camp under the stars with your family at Ogden Nature Center’s Dumke Picnic Grove. Take a guided hike through the Nature Center and learn about nocturnal creatures that inhabit the preserve at night. Songs, skits and s’mores will cap o the evening before you slumber under the stars. We will provide the entertainment, s’mores, a hot dog dinner and a cold breakfast. Bring your own tent, sleeping bags and mess kits. Space is limited to eight families and registration is required.

ADULT CAMPS

Camp re Date Night

June 23, 7:30 to 11 p.m.

Bring your favorite person to snuggle with under the stars. The camp re program is for adults 21 and older. This will be a fun evening complete with pudgy pie dinners, s’mores, an evening nature walk and, to top it o , stargazing.

Art in Nature

July 28th, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Ages 21 & older

$140 per person

Optional: Even Steven’s box lunch - full, $12, or half option, $9

Get creative in nature with this day of exploring, sculpting, painting and drawing. Campers ages 21 and older will work with local artists to sculpt with clay, paint with acrylics and use pen and watercolor to explore the natural world around them. Bring a water bottle and be ready to walk a little and create a lot.

Volunteens

For ages 13-16

June 6 through August 10, 9 a.m. to noon every Tuesday and Thursday

$45 for the summer (includes T-shirt)

Serve, learn and have fun with a unique program designed to get teens out of the house this summer. Participate in citizen science, habitat restoration, Nature Center projects and more, all while making friends and giving back to the community. Volunteens work on- and o -site with Nature Center sta in a fun, friendly, supervised learning environment. Space is limited and admission is not guaranteed.

Enjoy a week of hands-on learning, writing, drawing, sculpting, crafts and exploring in this combined nature and art camp all about birds. Classes will be held from 9 a.m. to noon (9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Thursday for the Bird Refuge Car Tour). Program for parents on Friday at 11 a.m.

ART EXPLORATION CAMPS

(4 days in one week)

Monday through Thursday - 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Art, music, crafts, theater, puppetry and science for ages 5 to 13 years. Di erent themes are o ered each session. Cost is $75 per student per session, family discounts and scholarships available. Each week ends with class presentation.

SCIENCE IN THE PARKS (FAMILY

FUN)

Science in the Parks is coming to a park near you this summer!Science in the Parks is an interactive outreach program designed for children of all ages, especially preschool through middle school, as well as their families. The free program will visit three parks this summer in the Ogden area in conjunction with Ogden School District’s free summer lunch program.

Each day of the week, we present a di erent collection of interactive, playful, and fun science activities for See it, Hear It, Build It, Move It and Feel It days. All activities are free and open to anyone that wants to participate. More information can be found at scienceintheparks.org, or email amandagentry@weber.edu.

At Give Me A Chance, our goal is to help children learn –even in the summer! Our Summer Camp promotes knowledge about science, music and gardening, all in a nurturing and safe environment. May 13: Health of the Great Salt Lake – Get a look at the factors that a ect the heath of the Great Salt Lake. These factors start in the mountains and in the foothills where you live. Come learn what all the hype is about and why it is such a popular topic in Utah.

June 17: Natural Hazards of the Wasatch Front –Earthquakes, landslides, volcanoes and more! Come learn about the natural hazards that can a ect you and your family along the Wasatch Front.

July 15: The Power of Water – Water is the most erosive force on the planet. It is also the resource that allows for life to ourish and provide for us. Come learn about how water has shaped our land, our lives and more.

August 19: Trees and Bees – There is more to meet the eye when it comes to the ora (plants) and fauna (animals and insects) along the Wasatch Front. From native to invasive species and large and small living things, this hike is designed to awe and inspire!
