MAGAZINE

Mustang enthusiasts have asked for a magazine that has no ads, no sales pitches, and no bogus “fillers” to eat up space. They have asked for a magazine that is free, easy to access, and nothing but focused on Mustang pictures and content. They have asked for a magazine produced and written by Mustang owners. They have asked for a magazine that highlights the daily drivers and the average Mustang that is driven and is not a trailer queen. They have asked for the chance to one day have their ride, their group, their club, or their cause to be recognized in print or online. It is our absolute pleasure to meet these standards and to give you STANG Magazine. We hope that both our message and our image will be seen in every Mustang community out there. Thank you Mustang fans and enjoy your ride!

TALKING WITH TJ

As we begin our journey into the descent of madness that is my mind and the crazy antics of my life, I would like to first introduce myself. My name is TJ, blah blah blah, that sums it up and all you need to know. Whew… got past the CRAP no one cares about! Now for the good stuff.

Mustang culture is one that is very unique and brings together people from all walks of life. One thing is for sure though, the STANG Mag crew isn’t your typical crew. We are a bunch of weirdos, oddballs, and outcasts. We party hard and live by our ride or die motto and have adventures like no other.

From partying in various spots all over the U.S., to touring some of America’s most haunted sites, to having my ass spanked by a beautiful Latina in Las Vegas in front of a restaurant packed full of guests (and owning it), it’s never a dull moment! All I can say is... strap in, rev the shit out of your motor, and let’s go!

LOVE, MUSTANGS, & CHEMISTRY

Happy February. Love is in the air and there is much fuckery to spread buttercups! This month let’s talk about how our Mustangs influence us. Now if we look at the “Mustang Influence on Me” chart we notice 1 condition, the more times we (Mustang and I) are together the better of a person you become. There is a scientific correlation between being a good person and length of time your Mustang has been in your life. Now for the scientific fun, the underlying factors of happiness can be put into two dimensionsEndogenic and Exogenic.

Endogenic factors include biological, cognitive, and personality. Now people who don’t like Mustangs fall under the Endogenic factors, as they clearly have a biological dysfunction that prohibits them the ability to like Mustangs. Well, we can’t help you here, sorry goodbye, have a nice life. People who do like Mustangs, well you lucky ones fall under both categories. Clearly you have a good foundation for happiness, since your brain is working exceptionally well.

© 2023 STANG MAGAZINE

JOKE OF THE MONTH KNOCK, KNOCK. WHO, S THERE? ANITA. ANITA WHO?

Anita you inside me.

Now the other factor for happiness is Exogenic factors like social cultural, geographical and life events, the external factors. Owning a Mustang is a major life event, that occurs worldwide, and gives you entrance into a car society. Like joining a secret society, friendships are formed, adventures are created, and no matter where you are in the world, the mustang is iconic, like a secret handshake to meet new fellow Mustang enthusiasts. All these positive Exogenic factors, aid in increasing dopamine and serotonin levels in our brains, which have been proven to increase our mood, aka happiness. Humans are built to have experience, after all isn’t that what life is about? Our experiences through life’s journey. These positive experiences not only increase our mood but also our perceptions on life. The more experience we have, the wiser we become leading to better choices and outcomes. Our psyche is shaped by our experiences, where every new experience rewires our neural pathways. Hence the more happier experiences we have, the happier we are. Therefore, as the time of ownership increases with our Mustangs, the happier we become and therefore the better person we become.

Oddly enough there is another correlation that many don’t speak of much. Possible out of embarrassment or maybe just we are shy. Much like the “Mustang Influence on Me” chart, there is a other chart “Chance of Farting in Front of Your Mustang”. There is a correlation of length of ownership vs the increased chance of farting in front of our Mustang. The longer we are with our Mustangs, the more comfortable we are. As we reach closer to our 12 months of relationship there is a 100% chance of flatulence extrication. Now, I know some of us can be trigger shy, but its ok. Your beloved Mutang won’t ever judge you, bring up the time you farted and it scared the shit out of your dog in front of your friends, or even look down on you for having an abnormally small fart which disperses to the right. No judgement here. Well as you can see owning a Mustang is one of the biggest boss moves you can make and its rewards are happiness well beyond the riches. Stay safe friends, we only live once in this crazy world, so live it up!

CRUELLA– 2010 ROUSH 427R (STAGE 3) & 2007 GT CONVERTIBLE

Over the years I’ve had quite a few Mustangs. I’ve always enjoyed them and I knew one day that I would share this hobby with my children. My daughter Ashley Rose was the first New Year’s baby in 1986 and over the years I’ve taught her all I know. She was driving and working on Mustangs with me before she could even crawl. We purchased our 2010 Stage 3 Roush 427R on February 19th, 2022 on what was the anniversary of my father’s death and would normally be a time to mourn, but we made it into a happy occasion to remember.

I was five years old in 1968 when my father and I saw a beautiful red Mustang GT Fastback and I told my dad one day I will have a Mustang and he said well you better start saving now son. So I did. I worked on my dad’s farm and at his store and saved every penny I made. At 14 years old I bought my first Mustang, a 72 Mach 1 at the junkyard for 500 dollars. I managed to get it home safely without any brakes and tried to hide it from my mother in the back yard. She clearly saw it, but it was the start to my Mustang obsession.

My daughter and I fell in love with this car instantly and she named her Cruella. We’ve taken the Roush to many car shows during our first summer with her and she even brought home first in her class at the 47th annual Shelby American Nationals in Indianapolis! For 2010 they produced 19 that are Stage 3 and the black/red color combo. We are proud to be one of those 19. I bought my daughter her Torch Red 2007 Mustang GT Convertible in the fall of 2022. She grew up with a

2023 will be the first time we’ve gone to car shows in separate Mustangs, but what matters is we always share these moments together. We will work on her car and pass the tradition down to her boys, my grandsons. This Mustang hobby is great but it’s beyond wonderful when you can share it with the ones you love like we are.

EVE–2012 GT PREMIUM

I STILL REMEMBER THE NIGHT WE WENT TO PICK IT UP AND THE SMILE ON MY FACE.

This Mustang always makes me smile no matter how bad my day is. It all started in 2012 when we purchased our first Mustang. I always loved Mustangs and never thought I would own one until we wanted to get a new car. I picked out a Mustang with everything I wanted and the dealer found a brand new 2012 GT Premium and had it shipped to their lot. I still remember the night we went to pick it up and the smile on my face. The Mustang became a car that we have so much fun with going on different events and long road trips with Mustang groups.

The people we have met and the friends we made since owning the Mustang is incredible. The people we have met through STANG Magazine we now consider family and are always

looking forward to a new adventure and places to see with them. The motto holds true, “Enjoy the Ride and Who You Ride With”. Just about every year we also do the Scenic Stampede with the Blue Mustang Registry starting in Virginia and ending in Tennessee traveling back windy and crazy roads the whole week. That is one of many road trips we do in the summer and always can’t wait for the next one.

Some of the mods I did are Roush axle back exhaust, Magna flow catted true X pipes, BBK 85mm throttle body, cold air intake, Ford Performance lowering springs, J&M adjustable steel panhard bar, J&L oil separator, Bama X4 tuner, and a Cervinis chin spoiler splitter with fog lights.

WHAT STARTED OUT AS A HOBBY HAS TURNED INTO MY FULL TIME CAREER AS AN AUTO BODY TECHNICIAN IN THE COLLISION INDUSTRY.

My passion for cars started as a kid playing with Hot Wheels, building models, reading Hot Rod magazine, and playing with remote control cars. My love for Mustangs began right after high school and hasn’t stopped. I still get excited after owning several Mustangs over the past thirty years. I learned to do body work back then as I couldn’t afford to pay someone to make my cars as nice as I wanted them to be. What started out as a hobby has turned into my full time career as an auto body technician in the collision industry.

This Mustang started out as a white 2007 GT. Over the first couple years of owning this I added the twenty inch Foose

wheels with Nitto G2, Cervini 2.5 cowl hood, Silver Horse Racing flush mounted quarter louvers and the GT 500 rear spoiler. Four years into having this car I decided it was time to change the color of this car. I wanted it to stand out from the rest of the Mustangs so I had my local paint rep color match my Snap On tool box. We did change the paint formula to make it a lot brighter. I loved the car and how it turned out but I wanted a 5.0! I found a 2013 California Special and decided to do a complete drivetrain and interior swap. I added a few bolt on mods as listed. I personally love the looks of 2007 body style and to have a 5.0 in it is an added bonus. I bought this car a month before my son was born in 2013 and plan on giving it to him at some point in life.

FAMILY TRADITION–2018 GT/PP2

AS I GET OLDER, I TRULY APPRECIATE THE GIFT MY PARENTS GAVE ME–THE LOVE OF CARS AND FORD MUSTANGS.

Family tradition is what it’s all about. From my parents, to myself, and even my son Forrest Hotrod Smith. We were raised around cars and racing. Of course all Ford. I have had many cars over the years. My first was a Ford Fairmount and many Mustangs after that. All of them have been working projects.

My current Mustang has been a small dream come true. With my current 2018 Mustang being a PP2 it is a rare package and turns heads. This car is very fun. I’ve changed up a few things yet keeping up with the OEM feel. My 2018 Mustang GT PP2 is nicknamed “Ellen” after my mom who passed away from cancer in 2004.

Ellen is now equipped with a Whipple supercharger, Lethal Performance clutch, up graded GT 350 axle, Texas long tube headers, high flow cat, Borla Atak with active exhaust and black chrome tips, Ford accessories, hood vents, front bumper driving light shades, side scoops and side window scoops, Drake Scott side and rear rockers extensions, Anchor Room Performance Pack 2 logos, and custom 3D printed strut tower covers painted to match with Performance Pack 2 logo.

As I get older, I truly appreciate the gift my parents gave me–the love of cars and Ford Mustangs. Thanks Mom and Dad RIP. And thank you Forrest Hotrod Smith for everything you have done!

IN JUNE 2022 I FOUND KONA, A 2019 ECOBOOST PREMIUM IN MY FAVORITE COLOR KONA BLUE.

When I was little, I remember my parents having a 74 Mustang II. That got me into Mustangs. Fast forward to 2014, I bought my first Mustang. It was a 2012 V6 Club of America edition. It was a great car and I did a lot of car cruises with it. In 2022, I turned 50 and thought it was time for a different car. In June 2022 I found Kona, a 2019 Ecoboost Premium in my favorite color Kona Blue.

The last seven months with Kona have been a blast. I love that it rides so much better, has more room, is fully equipped, and best of all my favorite color. It may not be a GT (next car) but it’s my daily and makes driving to and from work a little more fun. I hope to do a lot more car cruises with Kona..

THIS IS A NO NONSENSE BADASS YOU COULD BUY RIGHT FROM FORD.

Lillith, Adam’s first wife (of the Adam and Eve story), was misunderstood and demonized for wanting to be “boss.” Most machines of speed and beauty are referred to as “she” or “her.”

Such is the case with this 2013 Boss 302 Mustang owned by Henry Rife, famed A.T.V. daredevil and owner of “Lola.” She is the 2022 STANG Magazine’s Editor’s Choice Mustang of the Year. “This is such a complete driver’s car. With handling being the main

focus, I thought it would be a shame to do a lot of mods to her. She does have Borla catbacks and the Ford racing grille, but other than that, she is fairly stock. She just doesn’t need anything. I love it just how she is!”

The cockpit is primitive just like a racecar. This is a no nonsense badass you could buy right from Ford. Optioned the way she is, she is one of just 129.

Just like she always wanted, Lillith is Boss.

FOR ABOUT 35 YEARS I RAN BARREL HORSES AND WHEN I LOST MY HORSE, I DECIDED TO LOOK FOR A MUSTANG II.

I’ve always had a passion for fast horses and fast cars. For about 35 years I ran barrel horses and when I lost my horse, I decided to look for a Mustang II. I drove my Dad’s Mustang II in high school and he was a diehard Ford man. After a lot of searching I found the one... this one.

This 1976 Cobra was manufactured in San Jose, California and shipped to Hawaii where it stayed until 1999 when it made its way back to Ohio. I brought her home in 2019 and did a lot of detailing on her and with a lot of blood, sweat from Dan (my significant other), and tears from myself... we built my dream car. She has won me many trophies and even Best of Class at last year’s Mustang Week in Myrtle Beach. This year we plan on hitting the track and having some fun.

GO FIGURE, THIS WAS JUST SUPPOSED TO BE A SIMPLE 2BBL TO 4BBL SWAP AND TWO YEARS LATER THIS WAS THE END RESULT.

Here is my 1966 Mustang Coupe. Originally it was a 289 C code four-speed built in Metuchen, New Jersey in January of 1966 with black interior and vintage burgundy exterior. I purchased this car in December of 2020. I decided to change it over to a four barrel

but that led to a rebuild making it a 347 Stroker motor with all forged internals, H rod beams, aluminum heads, and intake 4 barrel carburetor.

The engine is made up of Ford Performance heads, Comp Cams valvetrain, Mahle Pistons, Holman Moody intake and a Holley carb, Canton deep sump oil pan, Billet pulleys, Cobra Valve covers, and GT air cleaner. Ignition is Pertronix distributor and coil. It is also equipped with a Cold Case aluminum radiator, Chockostang front disc brakes and dual master cylinder with all new brake lines.

It has a completely new suspension consisting of GT front springs and sway bar, Opentrack control arms, Monté Carlo and export brace to stiffen it up, and heavy duty 5 leaf springs in the rear.

To top it off, it has Quick Performance 9 inch rear axles with 3:25 gears, 11 inch drum brakes, 1350 joints attached to a Custom-made driveshaft, total rebuild of the 4 speed Toploader transmission, and underneath was Seam sealed then coated in Red Zinc Primate like the Metuchen factory used. The exhaust is Hedman Elite ceramic headers, Pypes X pipe 2.5 inch with Race mufflers. Head and tail lights are LEDs.

Go figure, this was just supposed to be a simple 2bbl to 4bbl swap and two years later this was the end result.

What started out as a completely stock 2007 California Special has gradually transformed into a beautiful work of art, well at least in my opinion. Stormy has become a fixture in local car shows and draws the attention of all ages. Not in my wildest dreams would I ever think I would have a car that would win not just a “Top 20” trophy but also “Best of Show” trophies in my category.

Much like it takes a village to raise a child, it takes a group of car enthusiasts and talented individuals to support you and

My car club, “Mustangs of Cincinnati”, has the best group of Mustang men and women and I am honored to be a member and I am very appreciative of their support and advice. BEING INTRODUCED TO SO MANY CARS AND WHAT COULD BE DONE WITH THEM REALLY IGNITED MY PASSION FOR CARS.

As a kid I always enjoyed tinkering with anything that had an engine to try and make it go faster. My first introduction to the car world was through my dad. He bought many cars and trucks to fix up and resell. Some of my favorites were a 1963 Corvette that was at the World of Wheels show, a 1978 Ford extended cab 4x4 pick up, and a 1967 Camaro convertible. He and his friend could do anything on a car: interior, exterior, engine, you name it. They could do custom paint from metal flake to crushed glass and old school lacquer. Being introduced to so many cars and what could be done with them really ignited my passion for cars.

I got into the Foxbody Mustangs in the mid-80s. In 1989, my brother bought a Mustang GT. Back then fuel injection was very intimidating, but that didn’t stop us from diving in and

figuring it out. As the years went on we got more familiar with the platform. There weren’t many aftermarket products and we usually had to figure out how to pick up horsepower for the 5.0 HO engines without the things available today. We owned that car for 20 years and in that time, we drag raced using engine combinations from mildly modified 302 small blocks to heavily modified big block Fords. It went from a small tire car to a tubbed out big tire car.

Since then I have owned countless Mustangs. I enjoy buying project cars to fix up and put back together. Currently there are 12 cars in my collection, from project cars to fun cruisers. Some of my favorite Mustangs are the odd ball Foxbodys and some of the lower production Mustangs. Some of my favorites in the current collection are the 1985 Saleen, the 1979 Indy Pace Car, the 2005 Saleen, and of course the 2007 Shelby GT 500.

I HAVE BEEN OBSESSED WITH THE MUSTANG SINCE I WAS FOUR YEARS OLD. I OWE THIS PASSION ALL TO MY FATHER WHO JUST PASSED AWAY IN 2022.

My passion for cars runs deep but my passion for the Mustang runs to the core of my being. I have been obsessed with the Mustang since I was four years old. I owe this passion all to my father who just passed away in 2022. He always joked that I was the “son” he never had because I was always with him learning all I could while he was working on cars. I grew up watching him restore and build cars, take those cars to car shows and walk away with trophies in many categories. He always wore a straw hat with old pins on it to every car show he went to. When he passed, I took possession of the hat and added my own Shelby pins to it. I now honor him by wearing the hat every time the Beast

All my life my dream car was a 1965 Convertible Mustang. I wanted that car so badly and I wanted my dad to restore it. That dream went by the wayside when my dad passed. The Beast is the 6th Mustang I have owned in my lifetime and will be my last. To own a Shelby is one of the greatest things to ever happen to me. This car is incredible in every way. We have driven to and raced Lebanon Valley New York, Atco New Jersey, New England Dragway in New Hampshire, the road track at Thompson Speedway in Thompson CT and a few others. We have been to many car shows to count. I have won a few trophies along the way and broken a few parts. I have owned a couple Mustangs over the years and this is my favorite.

JHON SERRANO

VEEGETA 5.0–2011 MUSTANG GT

My name is Jhon Serrano, a Colombian native and Mustang aficionado. My passion for Mustangs began at a young age, after receiving a ’98 Mustang Maisto as a birthday gift from my father. From then on I began exploring different modifications like changing the color with spray paint, putting on spoilers, and even swapping tires from different cars.

A few months after arriving in the US (and with some help from my father) I was able to buy my very first Mustang; something similar to the toy I had once received as a child, but a ’98 V6 convertible. Unfortunately, I was in a place in life where I needed to sell the car, causing my desire to own a new one to grow even stronger. I had to buy another one or something better!

Years later I am now married, have a beautiful daughter, and have relocated from NJ to PA with my family. With

lots of hard work, we were able to purchase our very own Mustang – a 2011 Mustang GT, which opened the door to a new family hobby. We now are part of the Mid-Atlantic Venom Outlaws where we enjoy spending time with great people, admiring cars, and enjoying as many cruises as the weather permits.

I enjoy thinking outside of the box and trying to be as unique as possible in terms of design and modifications to my car. My hope is to build this one up as much as possible and try to make my dream of owning a 1967 GT 500 come true.

“JUST THE TIP

BABY IT’S COLD OUTSIDE!

Antifreeze. Yep, just dump some in the radiator. We’re good…right? If only it that were that simple! What is it and what does it do? Well obviously, it prevents the water in your engine from freezing in cold temperatures but did you ever think about how or why we also call it coolant?

It’s anti-freeze but also coolant. Let’s start with the basics –what is it? The main ingredient of antifreeze is ethylene glycol. Ethylene can be converted to Ethanol through several methods; what is Ethanol? ALCOHOL! Does it freeze? Not at the temperatures that water freezes. In layman’s terms, a gallon of antifreeze is the same as a gallon of Jim Beam. We add antifreeze to the water that goes in the radiator, and subsequently runs through the engine, and this ethylene glycol prevents the water from freezing in cold conditions. We have done articles in the past about air pressure in the tires, and how susceptible air is to hot and cold, in terms of expansion or contraction. Water doesn’t play like air though. While air will continue to condense under colder and colder temperatures, water does the opposite. Water expands at high temperatures but also expands at

cold temperatures. Water is at its most dense point at 34 degrees Fahrenheit. Any lower than that and it starts to expand. Even in a frozen state, where this liquid water is now a solid, it will continue to expand. The colder it gets, the more expansion.

Did you also know that antifreeze will freeze if not mixed with water? Ethylene glycol will freeze between 0 and minus 5 degrees Fahrenheit; however, when mixed with water, it lowers the freezing point to minus 35 degrees Fahrenheit.

If it’s antifreeze, why is it also a coolant? Water is great at absorbing heat and consequently, bleeding that heat off. Pure antifreeze lacks sufficient heat capacity to keep the engine cool. If you put pure antifreeze into the cooling system, the heat-transfer capabilities are lowered by 35%, and it could damage the engine, especially in hot weather. Therefore, antifreeze is not really a coolant. Once mixed with water, it becomes a coolant (Thank you H2O). Another reason for needing antifreeze, or coolant, or whatever we want to call it at this point, is the lubrication properties of antifreeze. True that it’s the ethylene glycol

that keeps the water from freezing in your engine, but there are also additional additives in antifreeze that act as a lubricant for the bearing and seals on your water pump, heating system, and all other aspects of the vehicles cooling system. For ideal reliability, don’t use standard tap water or spring water to make your 50/50 mixture. Most tap/spring water is very mineral rich, also known as hard water, that will be the buildup you see on the fins of the radiator when dumping untreated or unfiltered tap/spring water into your radiator.

The moral of the story here is – get your antifreeze checked at least once a year. We know of several garages that will do it as a courtesy for no charge. Or if you’re ambitious, go to any auto parts location and get one yourself. The test kit is less than $10 and can be reused forever. It is a very simple test that anyone can do; it takes two minutes to make sure your engine temperature will be properly regulated, whether you’re in the Arctic or the middle of the desert.
