News from Roecroft

Lower School

Welcome to this month’s news from Roecroft Lower School.

I hope you all managed to enjoy some rest over the festive period and got to spend precious time with friends and family. My staff and I feel well rested and ready to start an exciting Spring term in school. We are incredibly hopeful the term isn’t too heavily interrupted by Covid; we will continue to plan a return to a full and eventful school year. If you would like to learn more about our school curriculum, please do visit our website. Each month one of our phase leaders will give you a brief update about the goings on in their Key Stage. Below is an update from Miss Emmerson, who leads Key Stage 1. Wishing you all a Happy New Year, From Mrs Cross and the Roecroft Family. Key Stage 1 Update:

Year 1 and Year 2 had a wonderful end to their Autumn term with all of the Christmas activities in our classrooms. We had a special ‘Christmas Around the World Day’ which involved the children exploring Christmas traditions in different countries such as Sweden, Italy, Germany, England and Norway. We enjoyed decorating gingerbread men, making Christmas cards, snowflakes and creating characters from traditional stories. We also filmed a special Christmas song for our parents and made some Christmas decorations to take home! Now that we have reached the Spring term, we have some new interesting topics to explore. Year 1 will be looking at ‘A Knight’s Tale’ and we have some exciting learning planned around the book ‘How to Catch a Dragon’. This will include making our own maps to find a dragon den and writing a set of instructions to trap our own Roecroft dragon - wish us luck! We will also be making our own moving pictures using a castle background and then adding on levers, wheels and sliders to show characters moving.

In Year 2, we will be exploring the topic ‘Kings and Queens’ by comparing several different monarchs from the past and present. We will be finding out about their lives through non-fiction texts and looking at their similarities and differences. In our art lessons, we will be looking at the artists Isobel Peachy and Hans Holbein and using their work to help us make our own royal portraits. To add to the excitement of our topic, we will also be having a Tudor day to understand what life would have been like and we will be having a banquet to celebrate! All of our curriculum information is available on our website if you would like to see more detail about what we are covering. It is going to be a busy term ahead, but we are excited to explore these new topics, join in with Easter celebrations at the end of the term and welcome some much-needed sunshine!
