From the Editor From the Editor Welcome to July, What a busy month it has been! As we write this column we have just enjoyed a fun-packed Platinum Jubilee weekend, enjoying picnics with neighbours, attending the beacon lighting event at Stotfold cemetery (pictured on the front cover) and helping out at the Arlesey ‘Picnic in the Park’ event. We hope you enjoyed your extended bank holiday break, however you spent it. Thank you to everyone that joined us ‘live’ on our facebook page for the beacon lighting ceremony, we were thrilled to reach many people (over 2,000) from far and wide - even some Stotfold residents who were enjoying their holidays! We were glad you could join us either in person or virtually and thank Stotfold Town Council for enabling us to be part of this nationwide event to mark the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. A few items we would like to draw your attention to this month inside your July issue, firstly we have bought back our popular ‘Coffee Time’ feature, especially so we could chat to Stotfold’s newly elected Mayor Steve Buck - we hope you enjoy reading this. We would also like to mention the special invitation you will find on page 8 of this month’s issue inviting you to say ‘goodbye’ and ‘thank you’ to Stotfold Salvation Army Captain, Nicola Brooksbank as she moves on to pastures new. We wish Nicola every happiness and thank her for the support she has given to our community during the last few years. Until next month... Joanne

Stotfold Celebrates..

Stotfold turned red, white and blue to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations back at the beginning of June. So many homes were transformed to mark the special occasion, with street parties, gatherings and an extra long bank holiday all contributing towards making it a truly memorable weekend. Here are just a selection of the homes and businesses we spotted out and about over the four days, including a special effort from Ted on Regent Street. (see the photograph to the left!)

Organised events from Stotfold Town Council saw hundreds of residents turn out to see Mayor, Steve Buck light the beacon in Stotfold cemetery as part of a nationwide event. We hope you like our front cover this month, which features our Stotfold beacon, lit to join in with the occasion. However you chose to spend your Jubilee, we hope you throughly enjoyed the celebrations!

Your Letters Dear Editor, I felt compelled to write as I want to make sure that Stotfold residents are aware, there is every possibility, they could lose the town’s community centre very soon, if their voices are not heard. The closure of the Oak Hall in the Greenacre Centre would be a huge loss to the community not just now, but in the years to come too. Regular hirers would be forced to take their clubs, services and events to towns elsewhere, leaving Stotfold with less on offer for all ages, and where would the growing population be able to come together as a community? The Memorial Hall is being offered as the solution, which is of course a huge step backwards after the Greenacre Centre was promised to the people of Stotfold as part of a deal with developers when the Greenacre Estate was built. A purely financial deal, proposed between Central Beds Council and Stotfold Town Council is to close the community centre, and house the library at Greenacres, selling the existing library at the Simpson Centre. How is the money from the sale to be used? I feel sure that as a town we love and value our library, but perhaps many of us would much rather see money spent on improving it on the existing site and using the money for the proposed refurbishment there. Do we really have to take away a much needed Community Centre used by so many people in the town? Thanks to local residents like yourselves, coming together at the end of last year and submitting a petition, we now have a public consultation (open until 28th July) and this is the only way that people can have their say. It has been entitled the ‘Stotfold Library Consultation’ and I note that the write up in the Stotfold News June edition from the council and on social media, is all about the benefits of a better library and in my opinion extremely bias with hardly any mention of the closure, sale, and the impact on local groups. A fairer title would be ‘The Future of the Greenacre Community Centre and the Sale of the Library’. Community is so important and it is only the community that can save the centre now. Please everyone, if you haven’t already, fill out the consultation and particularly the question about the Greenacre Centre, after people fought so hard, just to allow residents a say in all this. We all have differing views and everyone is entitled to their own opinions, but whatever they are, please make them known before it is too late. You only need to put short answers and it does not take long, but could make a huge difference in the long run. To comment online you can google ‘Central Beds Stotfold Library Consultation’ or you can email for paper copies to consultations@centralbedfordshire.gov.uk Thank you, Stotfold Resident

Your Letters Dear Editor, In May edition you showed a photograph of Edgar Saunder's shop and asked if anyone knew where it had been located. I remember it well. It was located on Hitchin Road just before the chapel near the cross roads. On the same side as the chapel between the chapel and Memorial Hall. I remember going there about 1945\1946. I wanted to buy wool and my mother gave me clothing coupons because she said we can't afford to buy any clothes so you might as well have the coupons. The shop used to sell men's underwear and was also a barbers. Mr Edgar used to live there with his sister. I have not lived there since 1957 when I got married and moved to Letchworth. Shortly after that we emigrated to Australia where we lived until 1971. I have fond memories of Stotfold and look forward to reading stories about the village in your magazine which my brother in law sends to me. Regards, Doreen Turner nee Poiner Dear Editor, In reference to your old photograph included in the June issue of the Girl Guides, I can confirm that bottom row 3rd from the right is my daughter Tracy Arch, now Mrs Tracy Cotton. Kind Regards, Barry Arch

Your Letters

Dear Editor, I would just like to mention that once again over some ten years Mark and Will of Four Season Garden Care came and did a superb job of trimming my Robinia Frisia tree and adjacent bushes. A really neat and tidy job! Many thanks. Ken Broadribb

Dear Editor,

I'm staggering to understand the thought process behind the chosen jubilee bench siting. We have three main park areas in Stotfold that have children's play areas, football held each week, events and also cater for families and elderly relaxing in the sunshine with grandchildren. So why have the Hitchin Rec or The Green not been considered? Instead a residential street? Prince Charles obviously for the namesake, the Green acre centre because everyone wants to sit outside there on a summers day and again new estate Millennium Green that already has everything that's offered including art commissions. I find it hard to see why the Hitchin Rec and The Green were not considered, seems as they serve the whole community each day. If the benches were a gift to the town, then why wasn't the town even asked where they would like them? Sarah

Coffee Time with Stotfold Mayor Steve Buck Some of you may recall our popular ‘Coffee Time’ feature from some time ago where we interview members of our Stotfold community. It’s our chance to ask a few questions in order to learn more about them and the role they play. We have brought this feature with a special issue, featuring our newly elected Stotfold Mayor, Cllr Steve Buck. As some residents may not be familiar with you, can you give us a brief overview of how long you have lived in Stotfold and how you came to settle here? I’ve been living in Stotfold for 7 years now having moved over here from Marston Moretaine and Stewartby. The lure here was the good transport links and the mix of rural and town life. One of the things we noticed early on was the community feel to the town and its friendly nature. Seeing such a great turn out for the recent Jubilee beacon lighting solidified this, making me immensely proud of our town. Having previously been a Parish Councillor in a slightly smaller village for over 10 years, I quickly noticed both communities have the same issues. After moving to Stotfold and seeing a Town Councillor vacancy, I thought I'd go along to the meetings - the next thing I knew I was co-opted as Mayor and here I am. What are you most looking forward to as you embrace your new role? Whilst previous Mayors have done a great job supporting our community, my goals for this year in celebration of the Jubilee are to further enhance our community and to drive forward our visions thus allowing the wider community to engage with the emerging future of the town. Key areas of interest are the Town Council’s interaction with local schools and the development of youth provisions for the town. I am also keen to develop the town’s commerce and speak to local businesses to promote apprenticeships, training and development opportunities for school leavers. The young people of Stotfold are amazing and allowing them the routes to develop careers in the locality would be great in order to keep them focused on staying here. I am very passionate about involving young adults and them taking ownership and responsibility for some of the projects coming up. Watch this space! What are your favourite things about our local community and why? I like the fact that even though we have developed into a sizeable town, we still have a village feel about us. Events such as the Mill Weekends, Firework displays, the Walking Market and the Scarecrow Festival bring the community together. As I have previously mentioned, community is a big passion of mine, as is driving forward a more cohesive community and prioritising things that really matter. For me a big issue in Stotfold is speeding. The town has a 20mph limit and most of the time there are a number of vehicle drivers well in excess of this. This issue has been mentioned by the pupils at Etonbury Academy in recent conversations and I know it is an issue which concerns them also. I enjoy the amount of clubs we have in the town and will look to help and promote them where necessary. We also have some great businesses in Stotfold, not only the shops in the 'High Street' but also those spread about the town, including the Fen End Industrial Estate. Further to this, we have large numbers of local tradesmen/services supporting the town and beyond - they too have found the support of the local community, especially since the pandemic. The wonderful Need Project and Good Neighbour Group and the work of the local churches is also amazing. Another passion of mine through my day job, is fire safety and am looking to engage with the Fire and Rescue service on delivering some information to our children on fire and water safety ahead of the summer. Part of this engagement will also look at careers in the Fire Service. I am currently working on how best to deliver this with them at present. How is the best way local residents can get in touch with you if they wanted to raise a concern, or discuss a particular local issue with you? There are a number of ways to contact a Councillor, we either have direct email /telephone numbers or are contactable via the Town Council offices at the Greenacre Centre. My contact email address like my co councillors is on the council website. How do you like to relax and unwind and keep on top of the work/life balance? I love to relax and unwind..... I do have a hectic work life, however doing my bit for the community is a priority. I like to spend my weekends finding enjoyable things to do with my family, although trying to tear my 14 year old son away from his Xbox is sometimes a feat in itself! Having recently been elected what are your plans for the coming year?I have been thinking about my chosen charities and this year I have chosen to collect for both the Need Project and Motor Neurone Disease. Both charities are worthy of the generosity from the Mayors collections, I have had family members affected by MND and feel the necessity to support research into this is a priority as the effects from such an atrocious disease can cause so much heartache for patients families and friends. Locally, the Need Project does a fantastic job supporting families in need so I would be looking to support this local group also. www.stotfoldandarleseynews.co.uk

Stotfold & Astwick Local Plan It was great to see the Stotfold and Astwick Neighbourhood Plan logo in print in last month's Stotfold News. To continue the updates this month we'd like to feedback on some of the comments received during the Stotfold Mill event held at the beginning of May. We wanted to give people the chance to think about life in Stotfold and Astwick and tell us what things they did and didn't like. We had a map for dots to be stuck on showing 'what's hot and what's not'. There was a resounding 'like' for the greenspace and walks that we have around the Neighbourhood Plan area, we are really lucky to have lots of footpaths and tracks provided by the Etonbury Green Wheel and people really valued this whereas there was concern over potential development. Comments included: Like everything about Stotfold, good community; Save our natural greenspaces; I like walking down by the river; GP surgery is too busy; No more building houses.

We are at the stage in the Plan making process where we want to identify the issues that affect the area, be it economic, social or environmental. There will be other opportunities for people to add comments or give us ideas to feed into the process over the summer so keep an eye on the Stotfold Town Council webpage or Facebook for updates. You could even offer to join the Neighbourhood Plan working group; we’re a friendly bunch and you’ll be helping to shape the future of Stotfold and Astwick. Please contact: 01462 730064 /stotfoldastwick.nhp@gmail.com Cllrs meet the public and gather responses at the recent Mill event.

News from Roecroft

Lower School

June was a wonderful month in school, mainly because of the excitement created around the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee! We spent two days celebrating, where we focused on timelines around the history of our Queen’s reign and we also used our Art skills to create a community window display, that hopefully many of you were able to enjoy. We also enjoyed sharing our work in assemblies and picnicking and partying on the school field in the sunshine, where the children and staff dressed in red, white and blue. This month we have an update from our Key Stage 1 lead, Miss Emmerson. KS1 have had a wonderful summer term with lots of exciting activities and trips to complement their learning. Year 1 began the term with a local trip to Stotfold Mill where they had the opportunity to explore James’s Carpentry the mill and make their own flour! They also spent time in the Nature Reserve. Later in the & General Handyman summer term, the Year 1s also had a themed day for their topic 'Boats and Beaches'. They Service welcomed in an external company who carried out a history-based workshop called 'The Seaside of Today and Yesterday'. The workshop involved a role play of travelling back in Exterior & Interior Property Maintenance time to the seaside of the past and taking part in fun activities such as Punch and Judy and donkey rides! They also enjoyed creating a seaside soundscape and seaside rap which * Decorating included lots of imaginative ideas! * Furniture Building

* Painting * Carpentry & more * Carpet Cleaning FREE QUOTATIONS T: (01462) 234292 or 07887 871212

Elsewhere in KS1, Year 2 also carried out a local walk for their unit of history focusing on the changes to Roecroft Lower School. The children had been learning about where Roecroft used to be based and visited the old school site to look at the similarities and differences to our new building.

Year 2 also had their first school trip via coach! The children visited Knebworth House and had an exciting day out to investigate 'how plants grow'. The children compared tree types, learnt about what plants need to grow, identified different types of herbs and visited the kitchen garden to learn about plant life cycles with a member of the Knebworth team. In the afternoon, the children enjoyed a picnic in the beautiful grounds of Knebworth House and spent some time in the playground. The summer term has also been very memorable due to the Jubilee celebrations. Key Stage 1 explored the significant events of the Queen's life and also her Coronation. They also enjoyed creating pieces of artwork to contribute to a collaborative school display in our front window. A highlight of the celebrations was our picnic lunch on our field. Wishing you all a happy and healthy July, with plenty of sunshine, Mrs Cross

June was another eventful month for us. Our children enjoyed a special commemorative day for the Queen’s Jubilee with arts and crafts and keepsake gifts for each child. This was followed by a whole school writing week project with adapted literacy tasks for each key stage on one chosen topic ‘what’s in the suitcase?’, the display of work is amazing! 274 children, 29 staff and over 30 volunteers all enjoyed a trip to Woburn Safari Park, each year group in their own bus! Considering the restrictions of the last two years this was such an amazing day for all! As with all events and news please visit our website for up to date pictures and information! Our Year 4’s really enjoyed a special outdoor activity day including a climbing wall, low ropes activity, inflatable assault course and many more team building exercises. They loved it! During July, they will also have their leaver’s disco party, church service, talent show and assembly. All special memories and a chance to reminisce, have fun and wish everyone well for the future as they leave for big school!!

Our Parent’s Association, the SMSA also held a number of fundraising events for our children including the Parents versus School fun race to see who could run the most laps around our school field. Our parents only won by 4 laps!!! There was also the Happy Bags Collection initiative and Father’s Day Gift Shop! The fundraising and continued generosity of the community is inspiring. In July there are plans for all years to enjoy a Summer Disco before we break up for the holidays. It’s amazing how quickly July comes round each year, but, being St Mary’s we still have a lot going on before the end of the school year! All of our children are excited to take part in a planned Olympic Sports Week which will include our parents – for the first time in two years! We will also hold the ever popular Creative Arts week. The children really enjoy this event each year undertaking a range of activities including arts and crafts, dancing, sporting activities and cooking to name but a few! Our Year 3 children will take a trip to Hazard Alley, at the Safety Centre in Milton Keynes on Tuesday 12th July. This is a purpose-built interactive centre where children can experience hazardous scenarios in perfect safety!

Computer Services

Our transition arrangements for our new children due to start school with us in September have all been well received with the children partaking in fun story time and stay and play sessions. There will also be a number of transition events for our older for Home and Business with a personal touch children as they experience school life in their chosen Middle Schools as well as a ‘Step Up’ for all years planned Just like having your very own for Friday 1st July. News from

Etonbury Academy

We started the month of May with our Juniors joining the largest children’s choir in the world, Young Voices, at the 02 Arena. Our children and staff all had a fantastic time. Shortly after this trip our Year 6s have undertaken their national tests which assessed their skills and knowledge. They don’t tell us everything about our children, but we are lucky enough to know them as individuals and are looking forward to seeing them flourish in their secondary years. They ended their test week celebrating their achievements with sporting and creative activities, and a non-uniform day. This will soon be trumped by a day at Harry Potter World! Our Juniors have also been enjoying the Secondary facilities this term making pizzas in Food Technology.

Our Year 10s have completed their mock examinations and Year 11s have started their GCSEs. Mr Matthew Harpin, Head of Year 11, led their final assembly with achievement certificates and awards to wish them well. We are looking forward to celebrating more with them at the end of school event. In sports, our Juniors and Year 7s remain undefeated in rounders, and our Year 7 and 8 athletics teams have done incredibly well with so many qualifying in their events. Huge congratulations for the Year 9/10 District Athletics team too, in prticular to Harry for winning the 400m hurdles and Finn for winning the 300m sprint, they are now off to the finals! Technology plays an important part in our school. Juniors are given their own Chromebooks as they start in Year 5. From time to time our Juniors also get to use the secondary facilities which include an Apple Mac suite and Design technology/Engineering workshops. Year 7 have recently been designing digital landscapes on our tablets and learning about influential artists. During Mental Health Awareness Week our Junior and Secondary students learnt about the impact of loneliness on mental health and the practical steps they can take to address it. We also held the opening of our staff wellbeing garden. It was a beautiful sunny day and we welcomed representatives from our local Town Councils, the local authority and BEST Trustees who kindly supported this project. It was a pleasure to welcome Steve Buck, Mayor of Stotfold, to take a look around the school with Mr Evason and discuss more opportunities for us to support the local community. We look forward to strengthening our links further and getting our children involved in more exciting Stotfold developments. The jubilee celebrations have been enjoyed mostly by eating cake! But, there have been tea parties, bunting making, and jubilee themes in Food Technology. Mrs Cook kindly made a Jubilee recipe book too.

As we approach the end of term, we still have a number of trips going out and of course the Matilda performance which we can’t wait to show you.

News from

Pix Brook Academy

The summer term is upon us and pupils at PBA have been taking advantage of the usual range of activities and events associated with warmer weather and lighter evenings at school. The PE team continue to surpass themselves offering a host of matches against other schools in Cricket, Rounders and athletics. Pupils continue to throw themselves into these events with vigour and youthful exuberance and it is one of the endearing elements of working in schools to see such excitement in the faces of children when they have enjoyed a competition. For PBA it is about the involvement and we try to make sure that those pupils who attend the training sessions are able to be involved in the competitions.

It goes without saying that the school made the most of the Jubilee celebrations. Pupils were able to learn about the Queen and her extraordinary history. It is one of the more difficult things to try to get young people to understand what a moment in history this is and the provision of a street party tea for lunch, non-uniform and bunting were all included to try to mark the moment. It is unlikely that that a monarch will achieve a platinum jubilee in our lifetimes and as such to try to capture this moment is worth the effort. As part of our attempt to acknowledge this significant moment in history, as well as create something memorable for the school we took the opportunity to plant an oak tree with seating to mark the occasion. The Reverend Bill Britt from St Mary’s church (a governor at the school) took time from his schedule to say a few words and Craig Smith, COO at BEST joined the school in helping to “open” the tree. It sits behind the school and over the next 70 years will hopefully grow and become part of the history of the school. Photos were taken and these will also be a record for posterity. We now look to the final few weeks of the term. Plans are in place to enable new pupils to visit the school, Step-up day will provide all pupils with an experience of next year and arrangements for sports day are in hand. As always our pupils energy and enthusiasm is a joy to behold and makes all at PBA look forward to next year. It remains for me to wish you a most enjoyable summer and I look forward to updating you in September. Stephen Adams Principle.

Poppies & Poppyfields Nursery

Here at Poppies and Poppyfields we have conducted research on the importance of nature, in particular its role in current sustainability challenges. Research carried out by the University of Exeter (2020) found that those who spent time in nature were more likely to recycle, be eco-friendly and support sustainability. We therefore foster a love of nature, helping children connect with the natural world. Ideas families may like to try at home include going on a ‘sounds’ walk and collect sounds such as birds singing, dogs barking, wind rustling leaves, running rivers. There is also a campaign running by the Wildlife Trust at wildlifetrusts.org/30dayswild where families are encouraged to value the natural world.

Our outdoor environments’ at both our sites provide a rich, stimulating environment where children learn to be curious, be creative, become independent, learn how to keep safe, be happy and have fun with nature! We operate ‘free-flow’ where our outdoor spaces are open throughout the year and children can Sewing move freely between them. Our curriculum ensures that opportunity for every aspect of Social learning is present both indoors and outside. This month, our children have explored nocturnal and diurnal animals with many of them remembering which animals are out in the day or night. We have supported National Hedgehog week and spent a very happy time exploring these delightful creatures. Children used dough, clay and wood spills to recreate them, some used woodwork and made beautiful models, while painting to create a spikey hedgehog body was great fun! Children also learned about hibernation through our discussions. During the run up to the Jubilee, children made bunting and crowns, explored our Jubilee Sensory tray, created Jubilee music and we held Jubilee Picnics at snack times! Our breakfast and after school children have also been enjoying the outdoors and are planning to make Jubilee Magazines, with all the things they have collected over the Jubilee celebrations, when we return after half term. For enquiries at either Poppies or Poppyfields (8-6, Monday Friday nursery care and Breakfast/After School Club for Reception children at St Marys, and Reception to Year 2 children at Fairfield Park Lower School, Dickens Boulevard, please contact billpoppies@gmail.com. What do you think?

There is often a misconception that therapists are only interested in feelings. The recent increase in therapists within TV drama’s probably adds to this idea as their main question is usually, ‘how do you feel about that?’. However, humans are not just feeling beings anymore than we are just thinking beings. We are thinking and feeling beings whose ability to manage both of these directly shape our subsequent actions and the way we live out our lives.

When life brings situations that evoke distress of any kind, the corresponding thoughts we have will help or hinder us in finding our way through. If our thoughts are filled with ‘oughts’ and ‘shoulds’ or unrealistic expectations of ourselves, others or life in general, we may struggle to find constructive ways to manage our internal response and navigate life’s trials.

Equally, if we struggle to believe that we can find our way through, we may get stuck in an ‘I can’t’ mindset that causes mental paralysis. If we can pause to notice our thoughts about a situation, we can check if these are accurate and supporting or sabotaging our responses. Whilst it is natural to feel distressed in the face of distressing circumstances, if we get caught in unhelpful thinking patterns, these can increase the original distress as well as having a debilitating impact on our ability to respond.

We must learn to notice our thoughts so we can rein them in and update them if they are running amok telling us unhelpful or untrue things. Many things in life are distressing and we don’t need to tell ourselves that this is Anxiety, Weight Release, Depression, not true. We must learn to manage distress in constructive ways but it is Fears & Phobias, Smoking Cessation, also helpful to recognise when our thoughts are trapping us in the distress. EIGHT IS GREAT, BUT YOU NEED A LEAD………

News from Stotfold

Watermill

For those of you who have not recently visited the nature reserve we are very pleased to announce that our resident pair of swans have brought forth a brood of eight cygnets. Back at the end of May they all looked fit and well so hopefully if you visit the nature reserve this month, or the mill on a Sunday afternoon when they often appear to be fed, you will hopefully find they have all avoided attack by pike in the river or other predators. When I first saw them making their way down the River Ivel to the mill I was reminded of John Masefield’s poem ‘Cargoes’ that I had to learn by heart at primary school. The regal parents leading like ‘Stately Spanish galleons’ with the cluster of small fluffy grey chicks chugging along behind, each as a ‘Dirty British coaster with salt-caked smoke stack’. If you do decide to take a walk around the nature reserve to see the family of swans and you bring a dog with you, we would ask that you obey the signs at the entrance and keep them on a lead. We have had reports recently of visitors ignoring this instruction. Remember that even the best controlled dogs can wander from you side and disturb the wild life. Also, please remember to bring a poo-bag with you and take any deposits to the bin in the carpark.

From this month the mill and tearoom will be open every Sunday afternoon until the end of September with the exception of the Bank Holiday, August 28th.It will also be open on Saturday July 23rd/ Sunday 24th, from 10.30am for an exhibition of paintings by the Stotfold Art Club. The Kingfisher tearoom and mill floors will open at 12.30pm as usual on each day. We are noticing a decline in visitor numbers this year, which is disappointing as our volunteers have been putting in a good deal of time and effort to enhance the attraction of a Sunday afternoon visits with new archive displays, children’s activities and more guides and millers on hand to explain the mill workings. This is undoubtedly because we currently lack volunteers to manage the publicity and marketing of the mill. Currently, for example, we do not have a leaflet advertising Stotfold Watermill and its opening times to go out to other museums and tourist attractions in Bedfordshire and neighbouring counties. If you have a little time, experience, skill or simply ideas and are willing to join a marketing team that could advertise and promote the mill, please call in to see us or visit our website, www.stotfoldmill.com/volunteer. You can also find out more about us and other opportunities for volunteering by visiting our Facebook page, Stotfold Watermill. Do consider helping us ensure the future of this local treasure.

No matter what pet you share your life with, you are invited to bring it to our Pet Blessing Service at St Mary’s Church at 4.00pm on Sunday 17 July. The service will be held outside. If it rains we will hold the service inside the church. I love a pet service and the chance to say a pet’s name and bless it. Christians believe that God created the world and gave it to us humans as a beautiful gift to look after. When I bless a pet, I don’t make it holy. Your pet is already holy because God created it.

Methodist Church

As I’ve written before, I recently took up painting. You see above one of my attempts from the beginning of this year. It’s called Seaside Memory and it is, perhaps obviously, unfinished. I was encouraged to compose a painting from memories and through sketches of objects that I had to hand. I included a flask I was given, a picnic box, and my old SLR camera, because I used to take holidays on the English coast and got into photography as a teenager. I fully intended to finish the painting but I got stuck and it didn’t happen.

I think it’s good to try things, start new things, and to explore particularly one’s creativity. We are made like our maker, creative. Whatever your view of creation or a creator or a God that you may or may not know, there is something Established 2010 undeniable about the creativity of human beings. I delight in the paintings and Fully insured & DBS checked drawings that I did as a child or those done by my own children. I love the Loving care guaranteed! fact that we are given paper and pens to draw and to capture a thought somehow on paper, a luxury. I hope this coming summer gives us opportunities to explore our own creativity. I am hoping maybe to finish my painting or start something new. I will endeavour to hold back my judgement Call Liz: 07894 561765 of my abilities and to simply enjoy the process and receive whatever emerges. www.smileypets.co.uk God give you a gracious and creative summer. News from King’s In the Bible we read about a time when Jesus was asleep in a boat during a storm. Even the experienced fishermen in the boat feared for their lives, so we can imagine what the other disciples must have been going through! But what they failed to recognise was that, while they remained with Jesus, they would be safe. The wind and the waves were no danger to Jesus, and the storm posed no threat to the Son of God.

Many of us know the experience of feeling trapped in a storm of some kind—chaos around us, or turmoil within—or both. Jesus spoke about how much God cares for the birds of the air, and the flowers of the fields, and that every single one of us is even more precious to God. No matter what storms face, and no matter the outcome, Jesus promises to be with us in all things, through all things. Corrie ten Boom was a Dutch woman imprisoned by the Nazis during World War II. Her ‘crime’ was protecting and sheltering Jews in her home. She was sent to Ravensbrück concentration camp, and she survived. She wrote about her experience:

“Once, while we were on roll call, a cruel guard kept us standing for a long, long time. Suddenly a skylark began to sing in the sky, and all the prisoners looked up to listen to that bird’s song… God sent that skylark daily for three weeks, exactly during roll call, to turn our eyes away from the cruelty of men to the ocean of His love.”

Advertising Feature

Local Business Success I’d like to introduce myself to you, my name is Stephen and I have lived in Stotfold together with my family for over 26 years. My business journey started just a little over three years ago when I found myself working out of the boot of my family estate car during evenings and weekends picking up odd jobs and a small amount of home maintenance and handyman work. It was during this time that the idea for Stotfold Home Maintenance Services (or SHMS as it is now known) was born.

The face behind SHMS Stephen Wood

Working for 33 years as a Service Engineer for a multinational engineering company, I was able to pick up the skills and techniques needed to make my business idea work. I continued to develop my ideas and with regular advertising in the Stotfold News Magazine, I was able to build up a client base and develop relationships with accreditation within mybuilder.com. I also secured a contract with two keysafe companies, contracts with retail shops in the local area and built excellent relationships with landlords and local businesses alike. Due to some personal health reasons my full time employment ended at the beginning of 2022 so the natural progression for me was to establish the STOTFOLD HOME business as I now had all the resources and time needed to run a MAINTENANCE SERVICES professional service. Taking delivery of a purpose designed sign written, fully racked out, fully stocked professional van, (no more family estate boot!) I was able to add HANDYMAN NO JOB TOO SMALL public liability insurance, a DBS certification, accreditation and 18th edition Tel:01462 887366 or 07434 760750 electrical qualifications and over 200 clients! I am more than ready to take stotfoldhms@btinternet.com my business to its full potential and serve my customers with no job too big WWW.SHMS.CO.UK or too small. See my advert to the left for details of how you can get in touch.
