This week has been extremely busy across the school as you will discover when you read through the newsletter.
On Monday we were joined by children from the 8-13 wind band ensemble. They played two pieces to the whole school. It was great to see so many of the children who have recently left St Peter’s 2-8 playing beautifully as a part of this group. My thanks to Mr Baily, Miss Craven and Miss Marshall. It is also wonderful to hear that over 80% of the children in Year 1, Year 2 and Year 3 at St Peter’s 2-8 play a musical instrument. There is a strong musical ethos based on inclusivity and enjoyment.

On Tuesday and Wednesday, Mrs Clarke organised and coordinated an NSPCC interactive theatre production entitled ‘The Net’ to help children in Years 5 and 6 stay safe online. One thousand, two hundred children from nineteen primary schools came to watch the production about a young girl called Sam who makes unsafe choices online. The children were given the opportunity to direct questions to members of the cast who remained in character and between them they created a positive and alternative safer ending to Sam’s story. This production is part of a wider collaborative campaign in York involving the NSPCC, City of York Children’s Safeguarding Partnership, the police and education. It was devised in response to an increase in incidents in the city involving children and online harm over the past year. I know this was very well received by all the primary schools who participated and I would like to extend a huge thank you to Mrs Clarke for organising such an important event.
On Wednesday morning 2P performed their assembly to parents, carers and the remaining Year 2 children. It was wonderful to watch the children present their learning journey and provide a small insight into the learning opportunities they have experienced throughout the term. The class then performed a beautiful song which was sung in two parts. Class assemblies are always so special and are a credit to the time and creativity of the staff. My thanks to Miss Platts, Mrs Brunton, Mrs Hayden and the cast of 2P for producing such a brilliant assembly.
Following this in the afternoon, children from Nursery to Year 1 had the opportunity to visit a mobile farm on the school grounds. The children thoroughly enjoyed this experience as they were introduced to a range of different animals including sheep, donkeys, pigs, alpaca, and a very playful border collie sheepdog. Thanks to Mrs Coyle for organising the visit and to Farmer Ian and his team for bringing the mobile farm to school.
On Thursday morning it was the turn of 3M to take to the stage as they performed their class assembly to parents, carers and the remaining Year 3 children. They presented their learning journey based on their themed text, ‘Riding the Americas’, during which they performed America a song sang in two parts from West Side Story. Huge thanks to Miss Murray, Miss Dodds, Miss Legard and Mrs Hayden for preparing the children, and also to 3M for performing so confidently.
volunteering for different events to represent their House. Micklegate won both galas this year, huge congratulations to all the children in Year 2 and Year 3 for taking part. Thanks also to all of the staff, in particular Mr Maycock for running and organising such a brilliant gala and for all he does for swimming across the school.
As you know last Friday we held a non uniform day in support of Comic Relief, Red Nose Day. The school raised a phenomenal £370 for this important charity. Thank you for your valued contributions, which we hope will make a difference to those less fortunate than ourselves.
This evening the Friends of St Peter’s 2-8 will be hosting a Wine Tasting evening in the dining room. I am sure this will be a fabulous occasion and I wish everyone an enjoyable time.

Following assembly it was time to make a hasty dash to the swimming pool where the Year 3 and Year 2 House Swimming Gala was being held. The children competed extremely well for their House, swimming widths and lengths of the pool in both galas, which is such a brilliant achievement for children so young. A number of school records were broken, however it was the sportsmanship of the children that particularly stood out for me, with many

MR LOMAX IS RUNNING THE LONDON MARATHON ON 23RD APRIL 2023
Preparations are well underway for the London Marathon 2023.
Yesterday (Thursday 23rd March) marked one month until race day!
Last Sunday, I completed 22 miles which was a massive milestone with the marathon training regime. I am most definitely looking forward to running the next few weeks in lighter and warmer conditions!....
A massive thank you goes out to all those who have donated so far. It has been so lovely to hear all about previous marathon journeys in the 2-8 community, and this only adds to the motivation. The children have been so enthusiastic and inquisitive too!
As we move towards the finish line, I would be so grateful for any further donations, either to the bucket in reception or to the link below:

The focus for this week has been on Year 2 and Year 3 in order to prepare for inter house hockey next week!
The emphasis in our games lessons has been trying to move the ball into space, passing and moving to create more successful shots at goal. Our inter house tournaments are a fantastic opportunity to put our skills into practice. The children are very excited for the competition next week and we look forward to welcoming you on the respective days.
The hockey competition will take place on St Peter’s 8-13 site, located on the astro turf. Please see the following date and times below:
Year 2 - Tuesday the 28th of March 9:30am-10:40am
Year 3 - Thursday the 30th of March 9:30am-10:40am
Please could the children come into school on that day wearing FULL kit, including striped games socks (Year 3), and carry their mouth guards in a zipped tracksuit bottom pocket (Year 3).
Please could all children in Year 2 and Year 3 wear shin pads. For Year 2, could all children bring some football/hockey socks in order to keep the shin pads in place.
Refreshments will also be available to you throughout the morning.
We look forward to seeing you there!

MUSIC
This coming Wednesday, 29th March we are holding a concert in the Memorial Hall at 2pm for all of our Year 2 and 3 children.
We are looking forward to inviting children from Burton Green School to join us in singing some of our favourite Young Voice’s songs from last half term.
All parents are welcome to attend the concert which will last approximately 1 hour.
If you have not already done so, please can you send your child's Young Voices T-Shirt into school on Monday as we would like all children to wear their t-shirt for the concert.
There will be no choir practice following the concert on the 29th March but afterschool care will be available if required.
Acorns
Spring is in the air, spring is everywhere!
The Acorns have had such a wonderful fun filled, bright and happy week.
The week began with us reading some beautiful farm books filled with poetry to celebrate National poetry day. The children can repeat some of the familiar phrases and are learning to listen for words that sound the same.
The chicks have been a source of delight for the Acorns and sadly we have to say goodbye to them soon. The Acorns have looked after the chicks so well and we are proud of them for listening and handling them so gently.
Forest school was all about jumping in muddy puddles. It was brilliant! Good job we had wellies and waterproofs on! In keeping with our farm focus, the children were able to enjoy the mobile farm that arrived and was set up near the Boathouse. It was a very special morning petting and learning about the different animals. The farm experience ended by rolling down the grassy bank which was awesome.
Only one week to go before the Easter break, and I wonder if the Easter bunny will make an appearance.
Let's wait and see!

CONKERS
If you go down to the woods today, (museum gardens! ), you are sure of a big surprise……and we certainly got one!
We headed out to explore the Storytelling area, that we had spotted last Wednesday during our forest school session, and when we arrived, we couldn’t believe what we found…..sweets, a witch's hat and a book….the story of Hansel and Gretel! After finding clues like left over breadcrumbs, stones, and a mysterious door, we all agreed that the witch must have planted the sweets and was trying to trick us!!
We headed back to the safety of Nursery ready for an exciting afternoon of decorating the witch’s gingerbread house….bashing it down and eating it for snack!
Oh! We mustn't forget all the different animals we have met this week too. Ian's Mobile Farm brought us alpacas, rabbits and a pig, to name a few. Plus, we saw our frogspawn grow into tiny tadpoles and got to hold the chicks that had hatched in the Acorns, sparking plenty of conversation about life cycles!
CONKERS
Reception
What a busy and exciting week we have had in Reception!
The highlight of the week must be our visit to Ian’s mobile farm down at Forest school. We were very lucky to see donkeys, goats, sheep, pigs, ducks, alpacas, Guinea pigs and rabbits! Farmer Ian told us lots of interesting facts about all the animals including how many stomachs goats have and how long ducks have to sit on their eggs.
All of the children were very brave and sensible as they petted the animals, and we were so impressed by all their curious questions! The star of the show has to be Meg the Sheep dog who was very well behaved and very patient with the children as they played fetch with her!
Reception have also enjoyed visiting the chicks in Nursery, learning about lifecycles and how to care for a small animal.
The week has also included clay faces and den building down at Forest school, woodwork projects and lots of junk modelling inspired by last week’s shoe box dioramas. Our little learners have also been busy exploring numbers 9 and 10 using Cuisenaire rods and developing their phonics skills singing songs and doing some fabulous sentence writing!
We are very proud of you all, have a lovely weekend!
Reception
This week in Year 1 we have been busy consolidating our learning about our favourite decade and bands. We have been inspired by previous learning such as dioramas and fact files and we have been creating lots of amazing projects about our favourite artists.
On Wednesday we were lucky enough to be treated to a visit from lots of four-legged creatures. We were able to groom alpacas, stroke miniature donkeys and throw a ball for Meg the sheep dog. We learnt lots of interesting facts such as: Did you know that goats have four stomachs?
Sheep only have teeth in their bottom jaw. And finally, we met a rabbit who could run speeds of 25 miles per hour!
In science we have been investigating how sound can travel through string and we have tested different lengths of string in an investigation.
We have also been super busy practising our lines for our upcoming assembly. We can't wait for you to see it!
What a busy week it has been in Year 2!
On Tuesday we celebrated National Poetry Day by writing iceberg acrostic poems! They also found out lots of interesting facts about icebergs and created iceberg artwork using collage paper.
On Wednesday it was finally 2P’s turn to perform their class assembly and it was so lovely for them to celebrate and share their learning from the term with all their grown ups, well done 2P!
On Thursday we set off to Forest School like explorers laden down with cooking equipment! The children had a fantastic morning of making hot chocolate on the camp fire and roasting marshmallows! What a great way to end our theme!
After a busy morning it was then straight back to school for the swimming gala! The children were all fantastic and it was lovely to see how much progress they have made this year with their swimming skills and confidence!
What great team spirit shown by all!
Adam also had a very exciting time visiting the school Finance Department this week. He took the money he collected for the Turkey and Syria Earthquake Appeal which we added up to the amazing sum of £271.19! Well done Adam for being so thoughtful and thank you to everyone who donated to this very worthy cause.
Have a lovely weekend!
It has been a busy, but exciting penultimate week in Year 3.
We have been continuing our journey through the Americas and finally, Alaska is in sight! We explored the wonders of some of the famous landmarks spotted along the way and eventually entered Canada. We hit trouble when we arrived in the Yukon and had to build a raft to get past the forest fires that were raging across the path we had intended to take. Eventually, we got to Dawson City and from there, we will begin the final leg of our journey to Alaska. We have been focussing on developing our writing skills and have enjoyed applying our knowledge to various styles of writing.
On Tuesday we celebrated National Poetry Day by planning and writing diamond poems inspired by our text.
We have moved on to looking at mass in Maths and have enjoyed getting to grips with reading tricky scales! Next week we will be delving deeper in to challenging our learning through problem solving and reasoning activities.
Alongside our classroom learning, 3M were first up to showcase what we’ve been doing this term with an epic class assembly! Miss Murray was incredibly proud of all the children for putting on such a great show.
That was closely followed by the hotly anticipated swimming gala. A big thank you to Mr Maycock and the team for organising and a huge well done to all the children for attacking the event with enthusiasm, resilience and importantly, an enormous smile!
