Throwing caution (and expectations) to the wind, Noosa locals Sarah-Jane and Laura jump-started their interior design business, Huntress and Hound, in 2021 and never looked back. Now, only 18 months later, they’re dominating the coastal design scene, with clients clamouring for the duo to cast their delicately trend-adjacent aesthetic over their beloved homes and spaces. “Working with our clients to create a home or bring a design to life is an intensely personal experience,” Sarah-Jane muses, “the shared collaboration that comes from working closely over long periods of time is immensely fulfilling and many of our clients have become lifelong friends through the process.”
While creatively they work day-to-day to help their clients connect emotionally to the spaces in which they live, the rest of Laura and Sarah-Jane’s focus is now set on breathing fresh air into the ways we all work — whether through advocating for a midday walk on the beach, true workplace flexibility, or conscious design.

But lasting connections aren’t the only thing that set these designers apart. From the very beginning, Sarah-Jane and Laura were passionate about stepping out of the societal mould predetermined for women in business. “[We wanted] to reboot the system that defined the successes of our generation as highly-pressured, stiletto-wearing girl bosses and ‘she-e-o’s’ that so many women felt they needed to emulate – us included.”
S omething magical just happens when you combine two people with the same passion and desire,” says Sarah-Jane of her work with business partner and long-time friend, Laura. The pair, who are excited to open Huntress and Hound’s first physical space, L’air Studio, in August, have delivered a raft of striking designs together, all the way from Noosa to Bangalow. With their business evolving at a rapid rate, Sarah-Jane and Laura are now using their momentum to focus on redefining the ways in which they work and interact with their clients, with each other, and with their environment.

COVER STORY
U pon meeting Lilli Frey on a cool winter’s morning on the cusp of our cover shoot, one thing is abundantly clear –she has a passion for jewellery that runs deep in her veins. The owner and creative director of Freya Fine Jewellery is as effervescent and vibrant as the jewels and gems in her collection. As she lays the various rings, necklaces, and earrings out across the table, our team collectively oohs and aahs at the delicate morsels – a mixture of diamond, gold, pearl, and coloured stones mixed with Venetian glass. The reality is, jewellery design really has always been in Lilli’s makeup. Both her mother and father are talented goldsmiths and designers, and after bouncing around in the creative industries, Lilli eventually followed the footsteps of her parents and made her venture into fine jewellery. “Fine jewellery has always been a part of my story. One of my earliest memories is of a goldsmithing lecture I attended with my mother as a toddler – I fell into the lecture theatre’s rubbish bin, much to the amusement of the professor!” she recounts. But it wasn’t until her thirties after a decade-long career in the creative industries that she really turned her focus to her own jewellery designs. “I started sketching rings in the evening once my children were asleep. I took technical jewellery drawing classes and learnt to paint gemstones in water colour,” she says. “Designing in this way was a pivotal experience for me – bringing the jewels to life on paper with pencils and paint opened my eyes to the power of colour.”

What started as a small collection of ethical sapphire rings has blossomed into a full-time love affair for this Noosa fine jeweller, Lilli Frey of Freya Fine Jewellery.
| 15@STYLEMAGAZINES
Tucked away on Hastings Street, Freya Fine Jewellery is a haven for those who appreciate handcrafted jewels that are designed to last a lifetime. And in a landscape of massproduction and consumption, Lilli applies a sustainability mindset to every stage of the creative process. “I use a combination of environmentally friendly lab grown stones and conflict-free mined stones in my jewellery,” she says. “Most of my gold pieces are limited edition, with no more than two pieces per design. Our pieces are designed and crafted to last forever – we are advocates of lifelong jewellery rather than fast fashion.” It’s an ethos that is particularly inspiring when you consider the time and thought that Lilli puts into each of her designs –always considering the impact her piece will have on not only the environment, but the wearer, too. With Freya as not only the name, but also the philosophy of her business, the ancient Nordic goddess of beauty and femininity is a clear trope for the feeling Lilli hopes her customers have when wearing her jewels. “I hope my clients feel beautiful and feminine when wearing Freya Fine Jewellery. Our designs are conversation starters, so I hope the jewellery helps them to connect with other like-minded feminine jewellery lovers,” she says. If you’re dreaming of a bespoke piece to call your very own, Lilli also offers a custom service and can help you create the piece of your dreams. “When it comes to custom orders, I find that most people have been nurturing the Colourful jewellery is not only fun and PLAYFUL, it also has the power to evoke STRONG EMOTIONS in the wearer.” idea of a custom piece for a while when they approach me,” she says. “Usually, the idea for the piece is sparked by a milestone event such as a birthday or anniversary, while others have inherited loose gemstones or are trying to recreate a ring from memory.” For some, the idea of creating something from scratch might be a little daunting, however Lilli makes the process a seamless one. “We begin with an in-store or online consultation where we explore design, metal, and gemstone possibilities. Next, I will sketch a design, take the client’s ring size and confirm details. Then a 3D digital model of the design is drawn up and once approved by the client, the ring is cast,” Lilli explains, adding that they are lucky to have their gem setter local to the Noosa region who applies the finishing touch to all bespoke pieces. At the end of our time together, Lilli sums up Freya Fine Jewellery as being sustainable, colourful, and elegant – a sentiment that is echoed beautifully in her vast assortment of cultured stones and expertly crafted heirloom pieces. She stresses how important it is that each guest entering her Hastings Street boutique has a personalised and special experience from the get-go. “We provide an immersive jewellery shopping experience. Our customers are encouraged to try on our collections while indulging in gourmet chocolates and the occasional glass of sparkling wine,” she says. “At Freya, we have fun, we are transparent, and we absolutely love fine jewellery.”

HOLISTIC designer the By POLLYANNA
With an unmistakably evocative body of work, Frank Macchia’s designs along Australia’s East Coast, from Sunshine Beach to Byron, are often described as grand. But, for the seasoned designer and his team, the future of our family homes is grounded in the beautifully imperfect, small, harmonious, and sustainable.

What’s in the pipeline at the moment? I’ve got a lot of fun projects on and I’m making a conscious effort to take on more renovations and try to get people to lean into the idea of smaller homes. A nod to having a more sustainable process is questioning how big our homes really need to be, especially given that there can be a lot of stress associated with living in and managing a large home. We live in a small home and have even re-designed the interior of our van as part of this exploration into smaller living.

I’ve always been interested in patterns and the way things are connected. I generally like to view most things holistically as opposed to separately, so the process of designing a home where you only focus on meeting a brief has never felt like enough to me. What does a day in the life look like?
Hi Frank! Can you tell us a little bit about yourself? I’m a designer with over 30 years of experience mostly in designing homes, although I have also worked on various commercial projects such as cafés and restaurants. With my family, I also run Shack Palace, a retail store in Byron Bay and a guest home in Noosa. What motivated you to become a holistic designer rather than an architect?
Every day is different, but my morning generally starts with meditation and visualisations for the day ahead, then I’ll head over to my work sites and meet with the trades. Afterwards, I’ll head home to make a morning ‘brew’ which is usually a blend of coffee and other herbs, spices, and nootropic goodies to keep me alert and creative for a day of zooming, emails, and client calls. Evenings are spent enjoying dinner and discussions with my wife, daughters, and their partners. What about your career fulfils you most? Connecting with clients, builders, tradespeople, and my team, as well as the creative aspects of my work, are the first things that come to mind. There are many different places a person can go to get their home designed, so I’m always intrigued by the clients who come to me! What inspires your designs? For me, designing is always about how spaces make us feel. Aesthetics is of course a part of this; visual details, forms and materials are interconnected with the way we feel and live in a space, so it’s all about finding the right harmony between aesthetics and felt experience. As I’ve evolved as a designer, I’ve begun to see the joy and bliss in imperfection more and more. When you’re not at work, what are you doing? Everything in my life is very interconnected. It’s difficult to draw a clear line between work and not work. I listen to a lot of podcasts whilst I’m driving around during the day, generally focussed on cultural evolution, with a bit of politics and science thrown in there. The relationship between people and nature informs a lot of my designs so I’ve found that camping with the family can also be a source of inspiration. Any words you live by? Less of a quote and more of a philosophy: humans have two base emotions – love and fear. The more you live on the fear end of the spectrum, the harder it becomes to navigate the day-to-day. The more that you can live predominately in love, the more you can see the things that happen every day as magical and beautiful.
What’s one hidden feature that you love about your tiny home? On the top corner step of our staircase, you can lift open the platform and there is a massive storage space that goes all the way to the bottom. It’s amazing how much we can hide away in there.
By BETHAN WARRIOR Does size really matter? As the tiny home movement only continues to grow, we chat to Yandina locals Aaron and Rahel about how going mini is a major investment.
Talk us through the building process of bringing your tiny home to life. We really wanted to make sure the design would suit our needs and lifestyle, so we wanted to have a spacious kitchen and a nice living room because this is where we spend most of our time. Seeing it come assembled was so exciting, it felt awesome to have a finished completed house delivered into position, we had a bit of work to do around the property, but once we got the hang of it, we were loving it more and more each day. How do you find living in a tiny home? We love it! Like anything in life, there are pros and cons. You’re forced to think about everything you buy and whether it has a purpose. Once you go tiny you are forced to live more consciously with your consumerism. Something we noticed from living in a three-bed home for nine months is that we accumulated so much extra stuff that in the end we rarely used or needed anyway. We love this tiny living life, it helps us to live more simply and consciously, and it's a lot easier and quicker to keep the house clean, which means less time cleaning and more time for life.
20 | STYLEMAGAZINES.COM.AU
Tell us about the back story of your tiny home… We previously owned a three-bed home in an estate, we had only just moved into it nine months earlier when we felt that it was too big for what we needed, and we realised investing so much time and money into paying off a mortgage wasn’t something we valued enough. At the time, we were launching our new business Slide Coffee Roasters and we had a choice to invest our money and energy into our new and exciting business, which was our long-term dream, or pay off our mortgage. So, we opted to sell our home and go tiny. We had discovered the tiny house movement through YouTube; however, it wasn’t until we had made an appointment with Fabio and Tiago at Aussie Tiny Houses and got a tour of a tiny house that we decided that this was a lifestyle that suits us more.
What is one misconception about living in a tiny home? There is a misconception that tiny houses are like caravans that are easy to move around and temporary. The idea that it’s

What advice would you give to people looking at building a tiny home? We think it’s important to be clear about what kind of life you want to live. Because we’ve downsized now, we are more financially free to invest our time and money into our passion – which right now is our business – and to have more time for family and our hobbies. STUDIO LIFE with MITCHELL ENGLISH & CHELSEA MILLER For creative duo Mitchell English and Chelsea Miller, love and life come part and parcel with art, business, and a life by the sea. Together with their son Duke (5) and dog Clive, the couple talk us through their days spent collaborating on Arcadia Street Gallery, Mitchell’s art, and Arty Shore, with an attitude that’s family first, surf second, and work whenever they want.

POLLYANNA
By GARDNER
C: We love to go to The Spit, down at the end of Noosa Woods. We take a pizza, the dog, we swim, and Duke plays – it’s such a lovely community scene and it has quite a cool ice cream truck too!
Chelsea: Mitch’s art has such a wonderful, broad appeal and I wanted to harness that with Arty Shore, while also making something sustainable and useful. That’s why everything we make, whether it’s a bucket hat or a yoga mat, is not only wearable art, but is also made using recycled materials. You’ve both been a part of Noosa’s creative industry for years now, how have you had to adapt as a couple as life has changed? Mitch: Our lives are really simple up here and we love that – if the surf’s good, we down tools and take time out to enjoy it! Tell us about your home and studio spaces — are they one and the same or do you like to keep distance?
How did you start working together?
C: We’ll drop Duke at school and take our dog for a run, then Mitch and I will work together for part of the day. Whether it be exchanging ideas, coming up with new directions and concepts or strategies for his work and for Arty Shore. So, what’s next? C: Arty Shore is expanding in a very exciting new direction: Mum’s and Mini’s – watch this space! Also, we’ve got some stellar exhibitions slated for this year and next at Arcadia Street Gallery. M: I’ll be releasing a brand-new range of limited-edition prints soon and I’ve got a few shows coming up. The first is a small solo show in November at the Sketch Collective in Sydney. What’s your favourite thing to do as a family in Noosa?
C: My studio is downstairs in our shack in Little Cove, so after dropping Duke off at school, I can check out the points and decide whether to work first or surf first – happy days! M: My studio is in Noosaville and I love its huge industrial ceilings and masses of paintings and canvases piled up. Paints everywhere, music playing – I’m in my element. Joe Langley, Joe Langley Real Estate Finding the right property is like landing a dream job and using it to inspire others to live their dream, too. This is something director Joe Langley of Joe Langley Real Estate knows all too well. He is the intellect behind all things buying and selling in one of Noosa’s most sought-after gated communities – Noosa Springs. Joe is more than just your go-to when it comes to finding an agent in the area, he is also a trusted neighbour and a pivotal part of the community – making him an exception to the rule. Most agents will sell wherever they can, whereas Joe specialises only in Noosa Springs. Joe was a sales professional in his early 20s and scored his real estate licence in Sydney at just 26. But as a family man at heart, he decided to take a step back and enjoy Saturdays with his kids. It wasn’t until he moved to Noosa Springs that he decided to kickstart his career again and is now joined by his daughter, Deb Langley, making for the ultimate dream team. Since 1999, Joe has sold and purchased four homes for himself in Noosa Springs alone and he wouldn’t want to live anywhere else – needless to say, you can rest easy knowing you’re in the very best hands when it comes to finding or selling a property in this sought-after community. Joe says, “Noosa Springs caters for all people. It has spectacular grounds and amazing facilities, like the world-class 18-hole golf course, as well as stunning restaurants, bars, spa services, and swimming pools.” Amazingly, the gated community has never experienced a break-in since it first opened in 1999! This real estate expert sold ten houses in the last quarter of 2021 and he’s not intending on slowing down anytime soon – especially with the average age of buyers changing greatly. These days, Noosa Springs has seen more and more young families moving in and calling the community, home. Finding the perfect place to call home can feel like a game of hide-and-seek. But, if you’re ready, Joe Langley and his family-run business are here to help you find it.

Deb Langley, Joe Langley Real Estate Deb Langley is the property manager at Joe Langley Real Estate a.k.a an expert at making your home a little sweeter. Deb joined forces with her father, Joe, to enter the world of real estate and property – now the duo strives to be the most respected in the industry, rather than the biggest. Following in the footsteps of her father, Deb specialises not only in Noosa Springs but also Noosa Heads and surrounding areas. As a property manager, Deb follows a philosophy to care for and maintain other properties as if they were her own. Usually, she spends her working days checking in on rental properties, landlords, and coordinating the maintenance team. “The most rewarding part of the job is having a client list that develops into a friend and loyalty list,” says Deb. She has even made her first sale – achieving the highest selling price for Noosa Springs since it opened in 1999. The $4.65 million sale is just one of the benefits that stems from developing strong relationships with clients. Deb is “over the moon” with her career achievements and is looking forward to higher growth in 2022. “I’d like to thank Joe for being a great dad, friend, and mentor –and of course mum for putting up with us endlessly talking about work,” says Deb. When home is the heart of your business, you need a team that’s passionate about real estate. Deb understands that your home is your castle, and you can let her take care of the rest. If you are seeking a more user-friendly, client-focused real estate experience, give Deb a call and catch a feel for a business that values relationships and loyalty over salesmanship.

BBQ YANGGAICHICKEN
Bang Bang’s Known as Gai Yang in Thai, barbecue chicken is one of the most popular street food dishes, served all over Thailand. At Bang Bang, we complement our Gai Yang with a classic Thai relish known as a “Nahm Prik Pla Yang”, loosely translating to a relish of grilled chilli and fish. Here’s how to make this flavour-infused dish.
Method: Combine salt and water to make a brine solution and brine half chickens for three hours. Meanwhile, prepare the marinade. Combine turmeric, chillies and coriander root in a mortar and pestle, working into a paste. Add flakey salt and oyster sauce. Once chickens are brined, remove from the solution and pat dry. Place in a container and cover with marinade. Store in the fridgeTheovernight.following day, prepare your barbecue on high heat. Use a splash of fish sauce to season the barramundi fillet and grill until cooked through. Place eggplant, chillies, mushrooms, shallots, and garlic cloves on the barbecue and cook until charred. Once blackened, remove the eggplant and chillies, place in a bowl and cover with cling wrap. Let stand for half an hour then remove the skins from each. Place shallots and garlic in a baking tray with a splash of vegetable oil and cover with foil. Roast in the oven at a medium heat untilForsoftened.therelish, add palm sugar and the juice of two limes to the mortar and pestle, combining until broken down. Next, add each ingredient, starting with the garlic, then shallots, chillies, eggplant, barramundi fillet, and finishing with the mushrooms into the mortar and pestle. As you combine with the palm sugar mixture, add the remaining fish sauce and the juice of another lime. Taste and adjust as you go. For the chicken, place skin side down onto the barbecue on high heat until golden brown. Turn down the heat slightly and grill until cooked through. Allow to rest before carving. Meanwhile, thinly slice your lemongrass and red chilli for garnishing. To serve, separate the chicken thigh into four or five pieces. Arrange chicken pieces on a large plate, liberally add your relish and garnish with coriander leaves, lemongrass, chilli, and a wedge of lime. Enjoy.
You’ll need: For the chicken: 1 whole chook – butterflied into two halves 2 litres of water 200g table salt 1 bunch coriander, roots removed and soaked in cold 4waterred birdseye chillies 4 cloves garlic 200ml oyster sauce 100g turmeric Pinch of flakey salt For the relish: 200g barramundi fillet 5 long red chillies 4 large shallots 6 cloves garlic 100g oyster mushrooms 1 thai long eggplant 200ml fish sauce 5 100glimespalm sugar To garnish: 1 stick lemongrass 1 long red chilli

Inspired by the tranquil Noosa lifestyle, enjoying quality food with even higher quality friends, discover the latest instalment from Palm Noosa – Bonne Nuit. Delve into the collection as we chat to the lady behind the beloved local label, Pippa Hannon. in COMPANYGOOD By BETHAN WARRIOR FASHION
The Sol Dress! It’s the perfect trans-seasonal dress – easily worn from winter through to summer. In winter, I’ve been adding a denim jacket and boots and in summer I can’t wait to pair it with my favourite Matteau brown sandals and Celine cat-eye sunglasses.
Can you describe the Palm Noosa brand in a few words? Contemporary, feminine, effortless style –born from a desire to pay homage to the quintessential Australian lifestyle of beach meets urban living. Who is the Palm Noosa woman to you?
The Palm woman is someone who finds joy in the small moments and value in the finer details. She recognises originality and does not compromise on quality. She seeks pieces that will stand the test of time. What is your favourite piece from the latest collection and how do you style it?
| 43
Where did the inspiration for this latest collection come from? Bonne Nuit was inspired by late nights with friends, laughing, reminiscing, swapping stories and sharing plans. It’s about making every moment a special one, whether it be cherishing the little things or welcoming new adventures. Talk us through your design process and the favourite parts of your job. I start the design process about 12 months out from the collection dropping. Each collection approach varies – but I usually start by concepting the prints and mapping out how I want them to work together. I then move on to designing the silhouettes and build the collection out from there. One of my favourite parts of my job is being able to draw inspiration from all manner of things – people watching, a song I’m listening to, a rom-com from the late 90s I re-watch for the 100th time – the list is endless. It’s so fun jotting down a mismatched assortment of thoughts and influences and then pulling them together to create a cohesive collection.
Botanical prints are a cornerstone of your brand, tell us why you love creating pieces with these elements? Prints cultivate such a sense of joy and adventure and can really tell a story. I always gravitate toward people who wear them. It tells me they have a zest for life which is what Palm Noosa is all about. What do you love about living and working in Noosa? I love the pace and the juxtaposition that the mix of locals and visitors going about their day provides. Plus, everything you could possibly need or want is at your doorstep – sun, sand, beautiful national parks, local markets, and a mix of amazing restaurants and bars.DRESSSOL

F eeling like a little bit of comfort, a touch of style, and a whole lot of luxe? Perched on Noosa’s very own Champs Élysées a.k.a Hastings Street, you’ll find Toscani, a dream destination for all the beachside fashionistas and resort lovers alike. An ageless edit of international designer brands awaits – think Isabel Marant, Nili Lotan, Golden Goose, and Ulla Johnson. Curated by mother and daughter duo, Maxine and Erin, this Noosa-based haven of designer garments and accessories is a destination for designs often seen in Paris, Milan, London, and New York. Once you’ve entered through the glass door with their iconic Toscani decal, you’ll be transported into a shopping paradise filled with an array of natural and breathable fabrics that are perfect for the tropics. The selection embodies the modern Australian woman who is refined, confident, independent, and driven. If you can dream it, you can do it; that’s the philosophy behind the boutique. And, if it wasn’t for Maxine and Erin’s hard work, Toscani would not be where it is today – which is a leading premium contemporary boutique in Australia. When you combine a family with retail ingrained into their bloodstream and 28 years of hard work you get a recipe for success. And Maxine and Erin’s hard work does not intend to slow down anytime soon with plans for a store renovation just around the corner. The dream team at Toscani are always on the hunt for new and upcoming brands to keep a point of difference and often jet off to seek the best of the best for their customers. “When buying, we usually start by learning the story behind the collection and look at how the designer intended for the pieces to be styled together, we then go through and see what translates to our customer and climate here in Australia,” Erin says.
Styling is the art of the understated, allowing you to express yourself and feel in control – something Maxine and Erin know all too well. There is simply no better way to start your day off than with a little dose of fashion at Toscani.

Melbourne-born fashion label is taking on Noosa as its first interstate outpost. Located within the Tingirana Resort on Hastings Street, White Story is proud to be part of one of Australia’s most iconic retail strips. Founded in 2015 by Creative Director Fiona Myer, it was born to present an alternative to fast-paced fashion cycles. The boutique originated from the quintessential white shirt and has evolved into a full ready-to-wear brand that continues to pay homage to Australian craftsmanship. After entering through the glass frontage at one of the two entrances, you’ll be immersed into a coastal-inspired space, made to feel more like a home than a store. The boutique is sprawled across two levels, divided between a sisal carpeted staircase that invites you to discover pieces that transcend seasons. The simplicity and subtlety of the story is a standout. Prepare to uncover White Story’s collections including their iconic white shirts, a selection of linen, silk, knits, and cashmere garments, alongside favoured local labels. “We’re a seasonless brand so we don’t have masses of stock, it’s much more considered. In saying that, we know our customers perceive things differently on holidays so it’s important to have a representation of everything we do,” says Fiona. It’s all about the details, from the minute you walk in until the moment you leave, you’ll be captivated by White Story’s fashion selections that cater to your every mood. The brand’s upcoming SS23 is slated to be their most exciting to date, and with a new website launch in August, locals and tourists alike should be eager to experience the essence of such a timeless brand.

When did you decide to get into the auction world? I always had a creative side as a kid and would often spend school holidays tinkering away in my neighbour’s jewellery workshop. After leaving school I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to train as a goldsmith, and over the next four years learnt the intricate skills in manufacture and design. After studying gemmology at the Gemmological Institute of Great Britain and completing an advanced diamond grading in Antwerp, Belgium, I found myself at Leonard Joel. I am also proud to be a registered NCJV valuer and am well equipped to provide valuations for any purpose.

Hi Amanda! How has 2022 been so far?
AMANDASHADFORTH.COM ARTS
The biggest challenge has been balancing my existing work with time to create and family commitments – but revisiting art through a more mature lens has been so much fun!
It’s been a whirlwind – with the launch of my art collection, the new website and my first fine art collection after a 10-year hiatus, ‘Between a rock and a hard place’.

Describe your personal aesthetic and how it informs your home and workspaces: I’m quite minimal and contemporary when it comes to dressing, and beyond fashion, I love the European mindset mixed with a little mid-century. I’ve collected some beautiful pieces through my travels, and I like to mix old and new in a pared back kind of way. There is a lot of my own work in our house, a true side effect of being an artist.
Tell us about where you work and where you feel most productive: With my fashion work, my space can be anywhere from local to international shoot locations – you learn to work on the go. Whereas with my art, I find solace in working from my home studio on the Sunshine Coast. What’s next for you and for Oracle Fox? Re-entering the art space, I felt it made sense to rebrand from Oracle Fox back to @amandashadforth, which is synonymous with where my journey began as a young artist. I’m looking forward to pushing my personal limits as an artist, whilst simultaneously growing my work in the fashion industry. I think it would be exciting to merge these worlds together eventually – I can’t say too much now but definitely watch this space!
For Amanda Shadforth, aesthetic dexterity is a way of life. One of Australia’s most high-profile stylists, this creative force majeure counts content creation, parenthood, and art among her many talents. Now, in celebration of her latest venture, we take a peek into her daily life and work, in the luxe beachside locale she calls home.
You’ve been such an influential part of Queensland’s creative community for years now – how did you get started? I have always followed my passions and live by the ethos ‘my vocation is my vacation’. For years I had an art gallery and creative space in Cotton Tree, but I wanted to push myself further creatively and around 2010 I created my website. From there I started to be approached for work by the fashion community and I really enjoyed the challenge of tackling a new genre.
HISTORYIRENECHRISTIE
I n the age of what’s new and next, author and lauded historian and author Irene Christie, keeps her grip firm on what was, and what may have been. Born 80 years ago in Pomona, a rural town within the Noosa Shire, Irene has passionately and tirelessly worked to uncover the history of the area as she’s watched it evolve through the eyes of 7 generations of family. A veteran of the Cooroora Historical Society – Irene first began work as a secretary with the organisation when it first opened in 1981, and went on to hold management positions there retiring in 1995 to spend more time on research, which has always been a true labour of love and her ode to the beautiful place she calls home. Now, 40 years on and almost the same number of years since the release of her debut publication, Historical tales of Noosa Shire: A series of interviews (1984), and Irene’s tireless contributions to her community as a self-proclaimed ‘information collector’, have finally been recognised with a 2022 Queensland Day award, and she’s not slowing down there. After a lifetime of searching and writing, Irene is still looking for the forgotten tales and history from her home. “I think I’ve always wanted to know how things used to be. Places are much more interesting when you know what happened in the past,” she says. An exciting recent discovery? An old forgotten hotel near Cooroy – originally built in 1887, it was eventually moved to the top of Blackall Range, before it accidentally burnt down in 1891 and was forgotten by the community, until now. While not as active in the community as she once was, Irene is determined to continue to spend her days the best way she knows how – enjoying and investigating the gorgeous region she loves to live in. In her own words, “in Noosa we have a variety of beautiful areas – beaches, mountains, valleys, lakes, creeks and rivers…and there is still so much yet to be uncovered.”

For Brisbane ex-pat Joshua Jones, Noosa’s glistening shores have served as inspiration for not only his professional horizons, but for his home life too. POLLYANNA GARDNER

“NOOSA TRULY IS PARADISE –WE HAVE ARGUABLY THE BEST BEACHES IN AUSTRALIA. IT OFFERS MY FAMILY A LIFESTYLE THAT YOU CAN’T GET ANYWHERE ELSE.”
S ince his sea change to selfprofessed ‘paradise’ five years ago, Joshua married the love of his life, welcomed two children into the world, and has travelled the country as Director of his company, Queensland Festivals and Events (QFE). To say he’s been busy would be an understatement, but thankfully for us, Joshua is far from done. In the midst of bringing to life iconic events like the Red Hot Summer Tour, Sunset Sounds, and Australia’s biggest international country music festival, CMC Rocks, he’s also been developing the Sunshine Coast’s soon-to-be favourite new locale. “I’m in the process of building The Doonan, alongside my fellow QFE Director Neville ‘Nifty’ Allen and the Comiskey Group,” says Jones. First and foremost, a pub — The Doonan will delight lovers of live music and (of course) a crisp, cold brew — but the Noosa Valley venue’s farm-to-table menu will also satiate foodies, and most crucially for Joshua, the atmosphere will be welcoming to everyone, including families. “I know how hard it is to find somewhere to go with the kids that doesn’t compromise on quality food and a good atmosphere,” he laments. “Once we open the doors, we’ll offer an experiential venue for everyone, supported by great food, all sourced from local producers.”
LAST WORD
Another big win for The Doonan? Jones and Allen are proud to be including a cellar door on the expansive grounds, where guests can sit and sip or simply stop in and takeaway. Featuring locally made wines, beers and spirits, this breakaway addition will be a mecca for visitors to the area, as well as local grape and grain connoisseurs. With the destination venue nearing completion, it’s beer garden and functions spaces will be ready and rearing to go just in time for festive season in November 2022.
