The Renaissance Year

Hi readers, thank you for taking the time to pick us up. Although this weather is still very much at chill factor, we hope wherever you are you can relax and indulge in this edition. We welcome you then to our 19th edition and first issue of 2023.

Upon hearing the news that Beyoncé is set to tour and head to our Welsh shores, here at the Style of the city office, we knew we had to rearrange our plans, ensuring our favourite global superstar graced our front cover. Like many of you, Beyoncé's music has been a pivotal sound in my growth, from belting Destiny’s Child songs out, to being ‘Crazy in Love.’ There has always been a song that either gets us dancing at weddings or one that nurses a broken heart. We cannot wait to see her perform and will give our full review in a later issue. You can check out all the official Renaissance Tour images and more information on the tour (P11)

1Take some time to reflect on and get really clear on what you really want for you. Use language that is specific and positive outcome orientated. We tend to find it so easy to say what we don’t want and quite difficult to be really clear about what we actually want. The more specific your language, the more specific your results.

2Once you are clear on what you want, get ready to visualise yourself already having achieved what you want. Really imagine what it would look, sound and feel like to have successfully achieved your goal. By imagining your desired outcome, your subconscious mind starts working towards making it a reality. It’s a technique that has been used by successful athletes, business leaders, and entrepreneurs for years. When we visualise our goals, we activate the same neural pathways in our brain that we would if we were actually experiencing them. This helps us to focus our attention and energy on what we want to achieve, which in turn helps us to manifest it in reality.

Did you set a goal for 2023? If you did, are you still feeling motivated or are you starting to feel a bit discouraged as things aren’t going quite as you hoped? Before you start beating yourself up, know there is nothing wrong with you.

It’s just that we’re not really taught how to set our goals in a way that is aligned with how our mind works. Here I share four tips to get you started on setting your goals so you can get amazing outcomes for you.

The great news is that you don’t have to wait for the start of another year to get going. You can use this approach any time you want to make changes in your life.

3Usually, the biggest obstacle to us living a life we love is (drum roll please)... ourselves. Ask yourself, do I believe I can achieve this outcome? Journal about what comes up and identify if there are any beliefs, thoughts or emotions that may be holding you back from achieving your goals. When you know what is holding you back, you can decide to let them go.

4 Finally, create a series of tiny steps that you need to take towards your goal. By breaking down or goals into small, manageable tasks, we are more likely to stay motivated and on track to achieving our ultimate goals. Plus, there is more opportunity to celebrate along the way!

ollowing the wildly successful release of BEYONCÉ’s seventh studio album, RENAISSANCE, the global superstar has announced RENAISSANCE WORLD TOUR, her first solo tour in over six years. The 2023 tour, produced by Parkwood Entertainment, and promoted by Live Nation, kicks off on May 10, 2023, making stops throughout Europe, with Cardiff being her third stop, performing in our Welsh capital on May 17th. The European tour then heading to Edinburgh, Sunderland, Paris, London, Marseille, Amsterdam, Warsaw and more. The tour then continues across North America with shows in Toronto, Chicago, East Rutherford, Atlanta, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, and Houston.

The Principality Stadium has once again been chosen, with excitement in our Welsh capital set to reach fever-pitch status. The last time we had the pleasure of Beyoncé in Wales, was back in 2018 when the Crazy in Love star performed with her husband Jay-Z. Opening their combined world tour On The Run II, the whole city came to a standstill. Beyoncé also visited Cardiff in 2016 as part of her Formation Tour. For many, this tour will be that feel good factor of escapism, a way for us to truly feel good. None of us will ever forget what these last couple of years have brought, and what better way than singing along to our favourite Beyoncé songs to make 2023 feel that much better.

n a note regarding the RENAISSANCE album, Beyoncé shared an open letter with her fans. She states: “Creating this album allowed me a place to dream and to find escape during a scary time for the world. It allowed me to feel free and adventurous in a time when little else was moving.

My intention was to create a safe place, a place without judgement. A place to be free of perfectionism and overthinking. A place to scream, release, feel freedom. It was a beautiful journey of exploration.” Beyoncé ends her open letter with: “To all my fans: I hope you find joy in this music.

I hope it inspires you to release the wiggle. Ha! And to feel as unique, strong, and sexy as you are.

With many collaborations and input from other artists on the RENAISSANCE album, there’s also potential for some very special guests to join her onstage. Grace Jones being a firm favourite here at Style of the city, Studio 54 style! Beyoncé is now the biggest Grammy award winning artist of all time, with hits spanning well over two decades. Noted for her boundary-pushing artistry, Beyoncé continues to supersede her levels of success with each new album and tour. She is not only a cultural icon but has become imbedded within our psyche. For the many ‘BeyHive’ fans (and there is many) she is the epitome of iconic. There are probably only a handful of superstars whose star is defined by first name only, Beyoncé is now at the top of that list, having broken the ultimate record of Grammy wins, making her truly a global superstar.

As with previous tours, Beyoncé will make her mark offstage, too, with BeyGOOD, the initiative she founded in 2013 to support people and programs around the world. BeyGOOD will continue its legacy of philanthropy,

building out this focus on economic equity by supporting organisations that serve marginalised and underserved communities with access to scholarships, opportunities for internships that lead to job placement, and resources to support entrepreneurship.

In various cities throughout the tour, BeyGOOD will support entrepreneurs through Black Parade Route luncheons, celebrating small business owners, with grant opportunities being awarded and a foray of services with global partners to promote business sustainability. One thousand small businesses will be supported with a commitment totalling one million dollars.

BeyGOOD will also support students through scholarship funds that will be given to colleges and universities in ten different cities along the tour. Each school will be given one hundred thousand dollars and will select the student recipients. BeyGOOD’s total scholarship commitment during RENAISSANCE WORLD TOUR will be one million dollars.

GINO'S STORY

Gino, lives with his parents. His mum, Charlene leases a Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle (WAV) on the Motability Scheme.

“Before Motability, we used to have a vehicle, but it was not wheelchair suitable. I found out about the Motability Scheme and applied for a grant for a passenger WAV so we can get Gino in and out of the vehicle whilst he is in his wheelchair.”

“If it wasn’t for Motability, we would still be struggling. We wouldn’t be able to afford a suitable car for Gino without them.”

“Gino has 1p36 Deletion Syndrome which causes epilepsy, global developmental delay, hearing loss and respiratory problems. He is a full-time wheelchair user,” Charlene explains.

The Ageing Face with Mr Richard Karoo

As we grow older, the ageing face is an inevitable process. We look at our faces to tell our story and strive for a glowing, healthy complexion, to give us self-confidence and act as the first interface with the outside world. Many factors of our ageing are out of our control. They are in our genetics and occur naturally. However, we can control our exposure to external factors such as ultraviolet radiation. When ultraviolet (UV) light hits skin unprotected by sunscreen, this may cause DNA changes at a cellular level. Because photodamage happens in the deepest layers of the skin—the dermis—it can take years before the damage surfaces become visible with excessive wrinkling, loss of elasticity and age spots. There are treatments and considerations that we can take to assist the ageing face and rejuvenate our skin. We spoke to Mr Richard Karoo, Consultant Plastic Surgeon to find out what we should consider when thinking about an aesthetic procedure.

Firstly, it is important to understand how the ageing face develops and what we can do to help slow it down. “The muscles in our face and neck thin throughout the ageing process contributing to a ‘dropping’ appearance. Volume is lost from the mid face and

fatty tissue accumulates in the neck.” Our skin naturally becomes more fragile in consistency and the elasticity decreases. This is a natural development and can differ between individuals with no experience being the same. Teeth health and natural changes in the facial skeleton can cause our lips to appear smaller and eyes more hollowed. Our eyelids can weaken and develop ‘bags’ under our eyes due to the lack of muscle tone in this area combined with the herniation of fat, the

Iskidded into The Manuel Guerra Skincare Clinic stressed after a day of client meetings, slightly late after a longerthan-anticipated journey, so the discovery of this hidden den of tranquillity in the heart of Tower Bridge was exactly what the doctor ordered. Planning a wedding is huge! And don't let anyone tell you any differently.

Yes it's fun. Yes you get to choose beautiful things and make big decisions, that don't usually play a part in your normal life. But it's a HUGE undertaking. So my job is to help you sail through it, by reminding you of the little things that will make a big difference to your day. One of those things is setting a budget. You can't plan a wedding without one! So whether your budget is big or small, it's a task that has to be done.

Setting a budget can be one of the most difficult tasks to do, especially as you may have no experience in the wedding industry and the types of costs relating to it. So where do you even start?

You start with you. Only you know how much you can afford to spend, so it's important not to get swayed by everything that sparkles. Here are my top tips on getting clear and managing your budget:

Decide on a figure that makes you feel comfortable and more importantly, decide whether you can absolutely afford to spend this amount. Take into account if you will be getting any financial help from friends and family. Do this exercise BEFORE you start researching prices of venues & suppliers! The response I get to this is 'what if my budget is unrealistic?'. This leads on to my next tip; your expectations needs to match your budget.

When I work with my clients I spend time exploring their options based on their budget and then match them as close to their expectations as possible. It's a trick I've learnt during my18 years planning and managing weddings. It all comes down to understanding the hidden factors that will affect your budget.

For example, the type of venue you choose is your biggest consideration. But this doesn't mean you have to lower your expectations if your budget is restricted. Choosing a venue without grounds and opting to have your outdoor photos at another location is an option. Or hiring a venue and transforming it can make things a lot cheaper.

The choices you make for your catering can also drain your budget –choices like table service, number of courses etc. While bespoke menus or later weddings can have favourable effect on your funds.

I also advise to look out for those pesky extra charges that can crop up when you least expect them. That's only because they weren't discussed up front. Things like delivery & pick up costs, set up fees and even extra touches that you don't particularly want or need.

HOW DID YOU FIRST MEET?

We were out and about one night and I saw this gorgeous lady, hovering in front of me. Shannon was out with her friends and her sister, and I eventually plucked up the courage to say hello. It took a few months to take her out on a date, but once we did, we hit it off.

HOW DID YOU PROPOSE?

At the top of the Rockafella Centre in New York exactly 2 years after we met each other – I didn’t mess around!

WHAT ATTRACTED YOU TO THE VENUE?

The house itself just blew our socks off. We were travelling back from London, and whilst in the car we were looking through Bridebook and saw this venue we hadn’t seen before. We saw it was in Abergavenny, and thought it looked amazing. Booked a viewing, and as soon as we walked in we just knew it was the one. We planned the whole wedding in 6 months. We were nervous at first as everyone was booked 3 years in advance, but this enabled us to focus, and get everything done and sorted.

WHAT DID YOU WEAR? TELL US ABOUT YOUR GOWNS…

The day dress was bought after the night dress. When I went wedding dress shopping, we were on a timescale as we only had 6 months to find the perfect dress and have it made.

I went to couple of boutique shops, and they wouldn’t let me try a few of the dresses on, as they said it wouldn’t get it back in time. I then went to One Bridal and fell in love with this dress.

HOW DID YOU FEEL WHEN YOU FIRST SAW HIM AT THE ALTAR?

Shannon: I was so emotional, as soon as I came in, Rhys was in floods of tears, and I was trying not to cry so I didn’t spoil my makeup. I could feel myself tearing up and I was trying to compose myself. It felt so surreal that we were just about to get married.

Rhys: I remember everyone gasped and I thought omg here she comes. It was like time stood still, you build yourself up over the years planning the wedding and how it’s going to be, and then all of a sudden, the day is finally here.

WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST DANCE SONG?

I won’t let you go by James Morrison. Our best man got us a record of our first dance song, which was a lovely touch. We also had a memory table of those who couldn’t be with us, so there was a lot of mixed emotions.

WHAT’S YOUR RECOMMENDATION TO FUTURE COUPLES GETTING MARRIED?

Focus on you, and enjoy the day because it just goes so quickly. Take it all in, every second and go bougie because you only do it once - no regrets! And of course, do it at Sant Ffraed House. Everyone we spoke to and dealt with was so helpful. The whole venue exceeded our expectations. We couldn’t recommend the staff and Sant Ffraed House enough!

New exhibition on 100 years of the BBC in Wales opens at National Museum Cardiff

To mark the centenary of the BBC, a new exhibition at National Museum Cardiff BBC 100 in Wales, will tell the story of BBC broadcasting in Wales. From the first broadcasts of the 1920s through to the digital age of the 2020s, the exhibition explores how Wales has contributed to the making of the BBC and how the BBC has impacted on life in Wales.

BBC 100 in Wales, which is open until 16 April 2023, will follow the history of BBC radio and television broadcasting in Wales experienced by Welsh audiences; the changes in programmes, attitudes and technologies through primitive radios to digital devices. From the first broadcast in Cardiff on 13 February 1923, Wales found its voice on the wavelengths through a variety of programmes in English and in Welsh. With the age of television came another new era with the birth of BBC Wales and the opening of Broadcasting House, Llandaff. Technologies changed but the many challenges of broadcasting within and for Wales remained over the decades.

The exhibition will highlight a few of those key moments and the programmes broadcast on the BBC in Wales. Objects from Amgueddfa Cymru collections will be displayed alongside footage from the BBC Wales archive. There will be an opportunity to see the latest TV’s and radios available to buy in the 1950s and relax in a 1970s living room to watch some

Christmas TV. Visitors of all ages will enjoy learning about children’s programmes of the past, from Muffin the Mule, Bagpuss and the Teletubbies.

BBC 100 in Wales will also feature a display of items on loan from some of the most notable BBC programmes made in Wales over the past two decades, whether fans of Doctor Who, Sherlock or His Dark Materials – there will be something for everyone.

Throughout the exhibition there will be opportunities to reminisce and respond – the museum wants to hear more about what and how audiences in Wales would be watching and listening.

AT AMGUEDDFA CYMRU said: ‘The exhibition looks at some of those key moments in the BBC’s 100-year history that have played a part in Welsh everyday life over the generations. It’s an opportunity for people to recall their own ‘BBC moments’ and to share their memories with others. I hope that some of the fascinating objects will be enjoyed by visitors of all ages.’ ‘We also want to hear people’s views, good or bad, and what they would like to see and hear on the BBC of the future’. The exhibition is part of a new 7-year partnership with the BBC that was previously announced in 2021. Both organisations will work together on developing public programmes which includes the BBC 100 in

Wales exhibition. They will also look to make their collections and research physically and digitally accessible. Both parties are committed to sharing experiences, helping to support our communities and wellbeing of Wales post COVID-19.

Over the last century, the BBC and other public service broadcasting has been a foundation of our democracy and of our understanding and engagement with the world. We’re very appreciative of the support from the BBC in developing the exhibition, and for the items they donated to the Amgueddfa Cymru collections so that the people of Wales may enjoy them for generations to come. “We hope that visitors to the exhibition will be inspired by the story of the BBC and where that story may go in the future, but we also hope that the exhibition provides them with comfort and an opportunity to reflect on their own histories after the lonely years many of us experienced lately.”

CARDIFF MUSEUM

from across Wales (Amgueddfa Cymru Producers), who were keen to question the representation of communities on the BBC and how the future may evolve in our fast-changing media landscape. There will be opportunities throughout the exhibition for visitors to share their viewpoints on the evolution of the BBC in Wales.

To coincide with the centenary celebrations in Wales in February 2023, the museum will host a family event on 11 February. This fun day will immerse visitors in the world of backstage TV with activities ranging from creating your own news story to having some special FX make-up. The exhibition is free to enter, and visitors can book their free tickets in advance.

Style of the city spoke with Managing Director Clive Thomas about the exciting move:

What made you decide to move your office space?

As a growing law firm, we needed more space we could use collaboratively. We wanted a space in the city centre, that suited our hybrid working model and reflected our growth as a business. We wanted an office that our staff would enjoy and be proud of and that would also attract new talent to the firm.

What can new and existing clients expect from the new offices?

We had a blank sheet of paper to work with and we are delighted with the bespoke fit-out of our new offices at Castle Bridge. They have been designed by Claire Willicombe at Lilleum to make the most of the space and the light - and the view of Sophia Gardens. For our colour scheme we have combined our corporate blue with green, to reflect the park we overlook and as a symbol of freshness and creativity. We have also included a large space to entertain which leads into the glazed walls of our board room.

Are you able to provide any additional services at the new space?

We will now have the room to base lawyers in Cardiff across the many disciplines that we offer. This includes Catrin Reed our new head of Wills & Probate and Leah

Rhydderch, Senior Associate in private divorce matters - both are fluent Welsh speakers and looking forward to networking in the local community.

It was early March 2020, my little boy was less than a month old, and my daughter was still only a toddler, but my mind was made up…I was going to set up the business, and absolutely nothing was going to get in my way – after all, I knew I wanted to be at every school concert, trip and parents' evening, so my ‘Why’ made this non-negotiable.

I launched the business in August of 2020 having spent just under 6 months planning and preparing, and I reached out to former colleagues, candidates, and prospective clients during this time. It wasn’t long before there was a small relaxation in rules, and we were asked to support a well renowned sporting venue – who are thankfully still valued clients.

I would be lying if I said it was an easy road, but I received support, guidance, and advice from some truly inspirational businesspeople, and I received administrative support from a former team member - enter Alannah - who was fundamental in our success in the very early days.

Fast forward to the present day and we are now a team of three, working with some of the best in the business, from care homes to live entertainment venues, sporting stadiums to luxury hotels – not just in Wales, but in various locations throughout the UK!

1. Layer up - sports bra, base layer, body warmer or jacket.

4. Wear an extra pair of socks, make sure they cover your ankles.

5. Company - if possible, run with others. Running in numbers is so much safer for women and also having someone to chat to keeps your mind off how cold it is

Excitingly so many of you are now booking those epic holidays and most longed for trips. Far-flung destinations have now all completely opened up again to tourists, amongst others these include Japan, New Zealand and China, which means lots are now booking some exciting long haul destinations.

As a luxury travel agent and concierge I am helping my busy clients to plan some amazing adventures to some very exotic places and so I wanted to share my advice to help you to plan your trips in the safest and most secure way possible - here are my top tips!

Book a protected package deal where possible, which means something that, is regulated by ATOL if it includes a flight (so it is through a travel agent like me). Should something happen to your airline before or while you are away then your entire trip would be protected. It means you will be one of the first to be repatriated back to the UK, rather than left stranded overseas. Ask to see ATOL accreditation from any provider before you book.

If you are planning a UK based or accommodation only holiday then make sure your accommodation is protected by ABTA by booking through a travel agent like myself. Then if you turn up and the villa not exist or the hotel closed due to flooding then this protection means you will be given an alternative or a full refund of money paid. This will give you piece of mind especially if your holiday is for a large group or to mark a special occasion.

Research your destination before you book anything. Check the FCO advisory on the government website for where you want to go. Be clear on entry requirements as some places have updated these recently, especially European countries that are still part of the EU. Spain, the number one holiday destination for Brits is a good example, as your UK passport needs to have more than 3 months validity on it from the date you plan to leave Spain in order to enter the country. I have heard of more than one holidaymaker being turned away from the airport departure gate because their child’s passport doesn’t have enough validity in it to travel. Please check what is allowed before you book and also again at least a week before you travel in case things change.

Insurance people roll their eyes usually when I mention this but so many of you book a holiday and then wait until just before you depart to book your travel insurance. Well STOP now. You need to check and book this at the time you confirm your holiday. Some of you may have holiday insurance included through your bank or credit card company so double check if you do and that it covers you for your destination. Some policies including annual ones only cover Europe so you might have to add in extra cover for worldwide, USA or ski or specialist holidays too. I have heard stories of people (myself included) who booked holidays and then broke their leg or tore a knee ligament before they had managed to take out travel insurance for their holiday. They could no longer travel and their holiday was non-refundable so they lost all of their money. Don’t be that person. Pay the deposit for your holiday with a credit card not a debit card. Most credit cards (check this includes yours) will give you purchase protection for any payments over £100 so by paying the deposit for your trip with your card, as long as the amount is over the £100 threshold, then you will be protected for this payment, until you take out your travel insurance for your trip.

If you are planning on booking your own holidays then these will help you to do so safely and in the most secure way possible too. Some I include and do automatically for my clients as part of my service so they can have complete peace of mind.

The top destinations and packages I’m organising at the moment include group holidays to Morocco so friends can catch up with milestone birthdays, a solo trip around Asia (including a rail journey from Cambodia to Vietnam and a cruise along the Mekong delta) and a big family trip to Lapland staying in an Aurora cabin with a glass roof perfect for star and northern lights gazing.

The resort now operates ‘off grid’ in terms of water consumption following the installation of a 3 rd degree treatment facility that sees every drop of wastewater recycled for use on its lush 33,000 square meters of landscaped gardens. Excess treated water is supplied to local farmers and in times of natural water scarcity, the resort will turn to its desalination plant to ensure guest needs are met. Water saving devices are also established throughout the resort and include auto-stop taps and 2-phase flush toilets. Moreover, given the resort’s stunning backdrop of Pissouri Bay, they are particularly mindful of the detrimental effect of plastic pollution on the earth’s waters and the associated impact this has on marine wildlife. Thus, they are proud to have pursued a partnership with Minoa Water, a pioneering business that provides drinking water encased in fully recyclable packaging.

Eco-friendly products (such as chlorine-free cleaning chemicals and products derived from renewable resources) have long been utilised across the resort, and Columbia Beach Resort is now operating with zero CO2 emissions, thanks to the employment of sustainable alternatives to a traditional boiler and new electromechanical upgrades, which allow individual building systems to heat water as

Defying Odds

Soffia Kelly, The Local Barry Girl Destined for Football Stardom

What happens when your true calling and passion, becomes the brunt of hurtful jokes and painful name calling?

That was the reality for Soffia Kelly, who always had a passion for football having started at the tender age 5. Being a female in this sport was a challenge she fought and ultimately overcame.

Soffia from Barry has always had a love for football, starting at grassroots level within the boy’s game at her twin brothers’ team. Despite this love of the sport, Soffia has been bullied, called names, and discriminated against most of her school life for her love of the game. Many evenings she would spend hours alone, kicking a ball feeling isolated. The isolation failed to deter Soffia as her skills developed leading her to be invited to trial for the girls’ Wales South performance centre in 2017; Her family life took an unfortunate challenge when her mother, Soraya Kelly was diagnosed

with breast cancer. Soffia felt unable to continue with the training and commitment, focusing on supporting her mother and family through this difficult time.

Inspired by her mother’s resilience, who thankfully beat cancer, Soffia worked hard to once again trial in 2021, securing her place in the new Elite Football Welsh Academy South regional squad.

After receiving her 1st international Welsh Cap last year at 14, Soffia has gone on to secure a place in all other international games.

As Soffia's mum Soraya Kelly puts it: "Soffia is a kind helpful young person who is always on hand to go that extra mile despite the challenges she has faced from an early age. She’s a role model in her community and continues to support community projects that help to make a

difference." Soffia's reliant attitude to life is infectious added to her determination to continue inspiring other young girls like her who want to get into sport overcome barriers. As a result of her dedication and commitment to making a difference Soffia was honoured as a runner up at the Senedd October last year by Race Council Cymru for an award highlighting Soffia’s achievement both in sport and the community. And more recently nominated for the Principality Child Of Wales Awards 2023 for her spirit, determination and courage. Soffia has recently been selected to represent Wales against Portugal in the under 17's squad and will travel to Portugal later this month. Surrounded by lots of love from her family and friends, Soffia is determined to keep pushing her football dream and continue to help and inspire others.

Parenting Columnist Polly James shares all on that transition from baby number 1 to a family of four.

Making the transition from one to two kids is a bit of a doubleedged sword. On the one hand, you’ve got experience the second time around, so you won’t feel quite so lost when it comes to feedings, nappies and sleep. On the other hand, you now have two little ones to deal with and only one pair of hands! One thing is for sure your heart is bursting with love and pride. The fact I have made two beautiful little children is beyond anything you ever thought achievable. I do wonder some days how I got here? What is happening? I think parents always have a moment like that. Going back to March 2020… many of the struggles I had when Indy was born was because of my own challenges in becoming a mother and mainly it being peak lockdown. I say ‘struggles’ but just lifestyle adjustments really. Babies are hard, for sure, but caring for a new born is like learning to ride a bike. It’s scary in the beginning, but once you get the hang of it, it’s no big deal. When you bring home your second child, you’ll realise that children are WAY harder than babies. Kids who can speak, walk, eat food, make messes and have the ability to go completely limp when screaming are way more exhausting than tiny humans who sleep and drink milk all day. Also, you may wonder when your first baby got so big.

Indy looks like a giant next to Trav is crazy!

Talking of how big Indy is now compared to Travis. Well, remember that feeling of wild and fierce protection over your firstborn? How would you use your body as a human shield to fight anything and anyone off them? Well, it’s the same for Trav but this time the impending danger is Indy wielding a plastic toy and running at record speed, towards Travis. How quickly the tide can turn! Don’t get me wrong, Indy is super loving with Trav, she is just very heavy handed. I’ve had to face palm her a few times when she is charging at Trav with a pen or remind her that Trav is not part of a massive pillow bonfire. Truly though, she absolutely adores him. As fiercely protective as I and always call him her ‘cheeky boy’.

I went back to work in super quick time. There just happened to be a ton of dart tournaments and Wales in the World Cup along with my regular radio show. I was lucky enough to be presented with new opportunities and I took them. I knew how I felt the first time round when I couldn’t work with it and I didn’t want that feeling again, so I have stepped back in front of the microphone and just made it work. People will

always message me and ask how I do it but the honest truth is I really want to do it. I love my job and grandparents are the absolute saviours of planet Earth When it comes to childcare. Any working parents I’m sure we tell you that having a great, trusting network around you is key. As I’m not capable of cloning myself, I did feel like I was constantly being pulled in opposite directions. If you are in a similar situation or going to be, you may feel guilty because you’re not able to give as much of your time to number two, as you were to your older child. I did so much with Indy as a new-born, all the classes and YouTube at-home videos, but with Trav he kind of just slots in. You may also feel guilty when you can’t be as present with your first or be there for every after school activity, because babies, even easy babies, are still demanding. The guilt is ever present but learn to embrace it. You feel guilty because you care so much and want to be your best for your kids, and that makes you a pretty great Mum!

Travis is five months now and pretty much the last three months I was working non-stop. You know me though I love it but I’m writing this in January now and it’s a calm month. We have had a great couple of weeks just hanging out together. It’s been so much fun and I’m enjoying every second with these little munchkins because I know within a blink of an eye it’s going to be a distant memory and they’re not going to want to spend time with me. That what people keep telling me- so I'm going to enjoy every moment I can—the good, the bad, and the juggling! Roll on a great year!

JUSTINE Jones

ACTRESS AND PRESENTER

Justine Jones knew from an early age that performing was something that she always aspired to do. Growing up in the South Wales Valleys, Merthyr Tydfil was her home but at the age of 18 the bright lights of the city came calling.

Justine Jones is an actress and TV presenter and is regularly seen on QVC as Brand Ambassador for Welsh Fashion Designer Julien Macdonald OBE. The name may be unfamiliar to some, but this rising star is one to watch; So just who is Justine Jones?

Justine started with a love of performing through Ballet and Gymnastics, even being asked to audition for The Royal Ballet School in London at the tender age of 9. Her love of stage performance trickled into her teenage years but at school she never felt like she quite fitted in and struggled with confidence. At the age of 18 she left the Valleys and went off to Manchester University on her quest to find what made her truly happy. 3 years at Uni and gaining her confidence she left Manchester

for London, and this was the moment she found 'her tribe'. Joining a girl band, Justine spent months writing, recording and performing in London, as Justine states: “They were some of the best days of my life, I was living the dream.”

Just as the girls had recorded their first three singles Justine fell pregnant with her first child: “It was a shock but I believe everything happens for a reason and becoming a Mum was mine at that moment, so I returned to Cardiff and had my son Harvey and 17 months later Charlie. I sold one of the songs I had written to a Turkish girl band called Hepsi and the single 'Kalpsizsin’ (Sneak) has had over 8 million views on You Tube.

Justine's cousin the incredible Julien Macdonald has remained a constant inspiration. It is Juliens huge international success and positive energy that has kept her attitude of never giving up alive. Both coming from Merthyr Tydfil, the belief of becoming an internationally renowned fashion designer or TV personality felt a million miles away in those early childhood days: “What Julien has accomplished is truly remarkable, a boy from the Valleys in the 90's working alongside Karl Largerfield at Chanel is like a fairytale, he has inspired me so much.” Having settled with her family in Cardiff Justine's marriage sadly broke down. Surrounding herself with friends and family and going back to her passion of performing to get her through, she once more found herself doing local theatre and short films to channel her inner creativity that had never left her. Six years ago, Justine received a call from Julien Macdonad to become Brand Ambassador for his new QVC collection and Justine felt that fire inside once more and hasn’t looked back since. In the last couple of weeks, she has been seen on BBC Morning Live with fellow Welsh presenter Gethin Jones.

In 2019 Justine won Best Actress at BBC Wales ‘Its My Shout Awards.’ She also stars in new Welsh horror movie Protein produced and starring Craig Russell alongside Welsh talent Steve Meo (High Hopes) Richard Elis (The Pact) Charles Dale (Casualty) Kai Owen (Torchwood) Richard Mylan (Waterloo Road) Gareth John Bale (Grav) released in March. Justine is currently working on a feature film with Luca Malacrino called 'A Sanctuary For Water Voles, a comedy that follows an eccentric and quick-tempered Welsh Family as they strive to bury the hatchet during an impromptu family reunion 'what you don't confront in life you become the victim of'. We are planning on filming the movie in Wales this summer.
