THE PRESIDENT’S LETTER

Dear members, It has been just under a month since we ushered in the 2021-2022 program year. Fall is one of the busiest times for the Club as families settle back into their regular routines after the summer break. I think we were all hoping for a return to our true normal, but much like last year, the pandemic continues to impact much of our daily lives. The government mandated Proof of Vaccination Order gave rise to a range of feelings for our members. For some, there is confidence to return to the Club after a long hiatus and many others have communicated a greater sense of ease while on-site. However, others voiced disappointment and frustration as they are unable to visit the Club. Regardless of your position, it’s clear that the pandemic has taken a toll on all of us. I want to thank you for your patience and understanding over the past 20 months and acknowledge the exceptional efforts of our staff. On a lighter note, I must commend all those involved in The Lounge renovation - what a spectacular space. A special thank you to the Planning & Facilities Committee, who assisted management in the RFP process and met with the designer on several occasions. If you've yet to visit The Lounge, be sure to do so. It is open 7 days a week and happy hour begins at 4:30pm. I'm sure many of you took part in the excitement of the Tokyo Olympic Games, watching as Canada took home a record 24 medals. The Olympics is a great reminder of the strength of the human spirit – our determination to push past our limits to reach our goals and persistence in the face of adversity. Here, we highlight the incredible Olympic accomplishments of three of our members John Smythe, Scott Tupper, and Donovan Tildesley, plus Club Gymnastics Coach Gord Bennett. Each shares their stories of inspiration and achievement.

Be sure to read through the key results of the Annual Member Survey beginning on page 12. We appreciate the time members took to fill out the survey and provide thoughtful suggestions for future improvements. We know the survey was longer than most, but there is a lot to learn with our wide range of offerings and your feedback is invaluable. Overall, the results were extremely positive considering the service interruptions due to the Arbutus 2020 project and the pandemic. The Club rated above the industry average in nearly every area and 94% of survey respondents are satisfied with their overall Club experience. That said, there is always an opportunity to do better. Management is working with the Board and Committees to develop improvement plans where needed, which will be shared with the membership as they unfold. For now, be assured that the Board and management strive to make decisions in the best interest of the general membership and deliver an exceptional Club experience. Ready to have some fun? Mark your calendars because your favourite Club events return this fall. Discover best-in-class wines at That 70’s Wine Dinner, socialize with friends at Grapes and Hops, or revel in the holiday spirit at Breakfast with Santa or the Family Christmas Dinner. You can find all the event details in this issue of The Bark. Finally, the Club continues to be in a strong financial position as we near year-end. Interest in new membership remains strong with 52 applications to date, over 3 million dollars in loan payments have been made since January, and revenues are up near post-pandemic levels in all areas. With that in mind, I encourage you to remember that the challenges we face today will soon pass. I'm confident the Club's future is bright and that collectively we have a lot to look forward to. Sincerely,

Alan Bailey Club President president@arbutusclub.com

Board of Directors

Did you know... When identifying candidates for election to the Board, the Nominating Committee considers an individual's: Willingness to serve for two consecutive, two-year terms to ensure Board continuity.

Professional experience, special skills, ability to work collaboratively, and make constructive contributions.

House Committee experience as it helps individuals develop a "whole Club" perspective and understand the governance framework.

Gender, ethnicity, age, membership category, and Club usage to promote a diverse and balanced Board that reflects the membership it serves.

Directors are elected by the members at the Annual General Meeting (AGM) or by acclamation in the absence of additional nominations. The directors' term in office is normally two years. Directors may be elected for consecutive terms, but may serve no longer than four years consecutively, unless elected as an Officer. Directors are nominated to the Executive Committee, traditionally following a ladder system. An Officer serves year one as Secretary, year two as Treasurer, year three as Vice President, and year four as President. This tradition provides continuity in governance and leadership. Board matters are decided by resolution by a simple majority of votes. House Committees must follow functionspecific policies and procedures in determining its recommendations for Board approval. Activity Committees are given equal opportunity to present their requests to the Recreation Services Committee before recommendations are made to the Board.

THE BOARD MEETS A MINIMUM OF 10 TIMES A YEAR TO ADDRESS THE FOLLOWING MATTERS: •

Approval of Board meeting minutes

Executive and House Committee reports

Review House Committee recommendations for approval including financial statements, membership applications, major and minor capital requests, policy changes, etc.

Review and discuss member correspondence

Reinstatement of member accounts

Attention to any other business

SUBJECT TO THE CLUB'S CONSTITUTION AND BYLAWS, THE BOARD IS ALSO RESPONSIBLE FOR, BUT NOT LIMITED TO: •

Establishing rules and policies

Establishing rules governing assessments, dues, and fines

Authorizing the execution of contracts, documents, or instruments

Authorizing additions, improvements, repairs and replacements to the property and assets of the Club

Approving House Committee assignments and mandates

head in the game From sitting atop the podium at multiple Paralympic Games, to fearlessly skiing down double black diamond runs, Donovan Tildsley lives life well outside of his comfort zone – and on his own terms

T

his past summer many of us watched the greatest athletes in sport showcase their immense talents at the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Tokyo, Japan. Although the event was delayed by a year, the international community came together amidst a global pandemic, demonstrating that hope, hard work, and perseverance pays off. Member and Paralympic medalist swimmer Donovan Tildesley knows this all too well. “I wasn’t out there to gain awards. It just sort of happened as a result of the hours, days, and years swimming back and forth from one side of the pool to the other”, he humbly says as he reminisces on an illustrious career that garnered two silver and three bronze Paralympic medals. Tildesley was born completely blind with Leber's congenital Amaurosis, a rare degeneration of the retina causing vision impairment. However, this circumstance did not dissuade

All those early mornings getting up and training before school had come to this thing...this medal around my neck. his parents, Deborah and the late Dr. Hugh Tildesley, from teaching Donovan how to swim at six months old. Swimming became an integral fixture in his life and began the path to a considerable number of world championships. “Basically, the reason we joined the Club was because my dad came home from work one day and found out that my Mom had waited four hours in line at the community centre to register me for a program,” Donovan mentions. “[My father] contacted The Arbutus Club and luckily had the means to join.” Becoming a member in 1990, Donovan has been a regular in the pool, training for competitions and being part of The Arbutus Club Swim Team. “I have been getting into lane 2 early in the morning for 22 years this September”, Tildesley reflects.

20

The Bark fa l l 2021

Members of Excellence

“One of my fondest memories of The Arbutus Club team was at my second or third meet as a nine-year-old.” A storyteller by nature, Donovan tells the tale of how his tapper – the individual who runs from one side of the pool to the other to tap Donovan to warn him of the pool’s edge – forgot to alert Donovan and placed him on a collision course with the pool wall. “I’m muscling down the pool and all of a sudden, bang, my head comes in contact with hard concrete.” He continues, “I get up, spluttering and crying. ‘Donovan, you won!’ exclaims my friend Gail. I had won the race, and Gail, in all her excitement had completely forgotten her sole responsibility – tapping me at the finish! I literally had my head in the game for that one”, laughs a perfectly punny, Tildesley.

The Arbutus Club helped open the door to what swimming had to offer. Donovan’s path to the Paralympics was due to continual oneon-one coaching that took place largely in the Club’s pool. He worked tirelessly with coaches to improve his aquatic skills with a goal to compete. “My dad came forward in the summer of 1999 and said ‘I realize it’s your goal to get to the Paralympics and I’m willing to work with you to get there. I’ll train with you every morning before school. I think we've got a shot at it’”, recalls Donovan. “…And we made it!” An incredible sense of pride and affection for his father is naturally evident. He adds, “it wasn’t just my dad either. It wasn’t just me. It was the support of the entire family. Even friends.”

These days you’ll find him conquering another mountain… literally. During the winter months Donovan can be found on the slopes of Whistler-Blackcomb. Although he’s not skiing competitively, Tildesley is no stranger to tackling dizzying, double black diamonds. “Whistler is my happy place and skiing is my therapy”, he confesses.

All of those hours became worth it in 2008 when Donovan received the honour of a lifetime. He was sitting in the peprally for the opening of the Beijing Paralympic Games and it was announced that Tildesley would be leading the Canadian athletes into the stadium as the nation’s official flag bearer. The moment was monumental and Donovan, true to his personality, wanted to make a statement. “Instead of holding my dad’s elbow, I wanted to walk in as a blind person, with my cane”, he says. “That honour will stay with me forever.”

Donovan’s love for the hill flourished when his father, Hugh, taught him how to ski as a child. With a headset and mic, his dad would ski behind him, guiding Donovan down the mountain. Years later Donovan tackled the Saudan Couloir, one of the steepest runs at Whistler Blackcomb with a brand new guide – on a pair of rented skis no less. “Trying to conquer a challenging mountain, there’s no feeling like it”, he says with excitement. It’s a metaphor we can all remember when navigating unfamiliar territory.

Although his career had been hitting stride after stride, Donovan made the difficult decision to hang up his goggles and announced his retirement from competitive swimming in April 2014. “When I retired from competition it wasn’t because I was burned out by the sport”, he assures us. “It was more the simple logic of the world getting faster and me not getting any younger.” Donovan wished for more balance and to nourish experiences outside of sport. “I never want to tell people to not work hard or not achieve, but there’s something to be said about finding balance in life”, he says with confidence. It appears Tildesley only looks forward, with new ambitions on his horizon.

When he’s not on the ski hill or in The Arbutus Club pool, Tildesley charms clients as a Broker at Buntain Insurance, dabbles in radio broadcasting, and works the crowd as an inspirational speaker. Recently, Donovan announced his plans to return to the water, except this time to get a scuba diving certification. Although he may receive even more recognition and fanfare in the future, in October Donovan will be inducted into the BC Swimming Hall of Fame; a well-deserved acknowledgement. The Club is incredibly proud to be part of Donovan's journey. ♦

taking tokyo – the club at the olympics After an unprecedented year, The Arbutus Club proudly watched as staff and members participated in the world's foremost sporting event

T

he road to the Olympics is no easy feat under normal circumstances, though this year provided an array of new challenges. Delayed by a year due to the pandemic, the Tokyo 2020 Olympics managed to kick off successfully, though a much more subdued affair than previous games. Making the event extra special was the inclusion of members John Smythe and Scott Tupper, both of whom played on the Canadian Men's Field Hockey team. Club staff also took part with Gymnastics Coach Gord Bennett sitting on the judging panel for Women's Gymnastics. Congratulations to our Arbutus Clubbers who represented the incredible talent we have to offer here at the Club.

Gord Bennett

judge, women's gymnastics Gord has been involved in gymnastics nearly all of his life with experience as an athlete, coach, and a judging official. Joining the The Arbutus Club Gymnastics program in 2001, Gord has helped many of our young athletes reach their sporting potential. His talent as a coach and knowledge of the sport landed him the incredible appointment as a judge at the Olympics in Tokyo this summer. How was your experience judging Women’s Gymnastics at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics? Tokyo 2020 was filled with a lot of emotion. The games were quite unique, not only due to all the COVID protocols in place to safeguard the well-being of participants, but because they provided many unexpected results, such as the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) winning the team title ahead of the USA, and Simone Biles not winning any gold medals. What do you look for when you are on the judging panel? As a part of the E-panel (Execution), I looked at technical aspects of the performances - checking for body positions, precision of elements, etc. I also looked at the artistic side of the performances on balance beam and floor exercise. It was an honour and a privilege to be in such a pressure-filled position where Olympic champions were decided. Was there a performance that surprised you whilst judging? There were several performances that impressed me. The overall ability of the ROC to win the team title showed that despite the world situation surrounding COVID, they were able to put all their hard work and dedication into practical success. Individually, I was impressed by Rebecca Andrade from Brazil. She won a silver medal all-around and took the gold medal on vault - after having three ACL replacements. And of course, I was impressed by Ellie Black who had the highest individual placing ever by a Canadian gymnast at the Olympics when she just missed a medal on balance beam while competing on a severely sprained ankle.

Scott Tupper

John Smythe

Scott began playing with the Vancouver Hawks field hockey team when he was 6 years old. Developing into a gifted player, he was keen to pursue a future in the sport. Scott's trajectory for success led him to play for the UBC field hockey team, as well as the Canadian Men's National Field Hockey Team. Making his Olympic debut in Beijing, Tupper has played field hockey all around the world over the past 16 years.

Introduced to field hockey at the age of 4, John often ran up and down the sidelines of his brother's games. His fascination with the sport soon turned into competing at the provincial and national level. Despite a Crohn’s disease diagnosis, three major surgeries, and falling out of the National program for 4 years, Smythe was determined to overcome the obstacles. Since then, John has represented Canada at the Commonwealth Games, Pan American Games, World Cup, and most recently, at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

at h l e t e , f i e l d h o c k e y

What was your experience at the Tokyo Olympics? This year was obviously a little bit different than the past, but it was a really great experience. Despite the COVID protocols, the village was a fun place to be and it felt quite close to the ‘normal’ thing. I really love being amongst the best athletes in the world, experiencing all the different athletes, and competing amongst the best in the world in my sport. Preparation is key when competing in the Olympics. How did the team ready themselves for the Olympics? We weren’t able to travel as much as we have in previous years, but we did get to Europe for some training tours. A lot of our training was Vancouver-based and we had a heavy emphasis on physiological work. Playing 5 games in 7 days at an Olympic level is really difficult, especially in hot conditions, so we had to be sure that we were prepared. We escaped with no injuries, so it looks like a lot of the work paid off. Has the Club helped you in your sporting career? Being a Club member was hugely helpful – we have a great training environment at the Club. I was able to get all the necessary space and equipment needed to supplement what I was doing with my teams. It’s also the best spot to hang out, see friends, and relax. It's a home away from home.

at h l e t e , f i e l d h o c k e y

How did it feel to participate on the world's biggest stage? The Olympics have always been a dream of mine. Stepping into the Olympic Village for the first time was simply surreal. I had a lot of emotion run through me as I proudly sung the national anthem for the first time. My heart was racing. However, I maintained a constant smile – I was finally going to become an Olympian. All those feelings were soon washed away. A few deep breaths and I was clear-minded, ready to help my team compete against the best in the world. Although the Men’s Field Hockey team didn’t make the podium, the team served up some incredible competition. What’s next for the team? We have some down time for roughly three weeks, then we will slowly ease into training as we have the Pan American Cup in January, which is a direct qualifier for the World Cup. Thank you to The Arbutus Club, its members, and community who have been overwhelmingly supportive during my time on the team, but especially over these past 5 years. Having access to all the facilities, whether it be the weight room or the pool for recovery, the Club undeniably has an instrumental effect on my field hockey career and shaped me to be the athlete I am today. ♦ arbutusclub.com

king of the court Geoffrey Yee details how The Arbutus Club has helped nurture his love for squash and why he stays committed to his craft

I

f you frequent the Squash Lounge chances are you'll bump into Geoffrey Yee perfecting his swing. Working with coaches Drew Henderson and Matthew Toth, Geoffrey has become a staple on the courts, volunteering in Club squash camps and clinics, as well as competing in the U17 division. With a goal of going top 20 in Canada within his age group, Geoffrey is well on his way to becoming a leader in squash, and is a fantastic ambassador for The Arbutus Club.

When did you first start playing or participating in squash? Geoffrey: I started playing squash around 4 years ago when I was eleven. I worked very hard to reach the level of skill I'm at today, as most of the people I compete with have been playing squash for 10 years or more.

What is your favourite part of your sport? G: I love going to tournaments, travelling to other cities, playing with people from all over the country, and making new friends. In addition, I enjoy the physical and mental challenge of the game.

How have you adapted to changes in squash throughout the pandemic? G: As I wasn't able to compete with other juniors or do team training, I solo practiced 3-5 times per week, practiced with a ball machine, continued one-on-one lessons with the pros, and undertook a fitness regime. My goal was to focus on technique improvement, learn more game strategy and improve my strength and endurance. Although the pandemic disrupted regular practice routines, I still managed to come out of it a better squash player.

24

The Bark fa l l 2021

Meet the Athlete

What aspect of your sport has inspired you to stay committed throughout this year? G: My passion for the sport and personal commitment to be my best self has kept me motivated to keep training throughout the pandemic. Eventually, squash tournaments will be starting up again, and I want to be able to resume the circuit seamlessly.

How is participating in squash unique at the Club? G: The people at The Arbutus Club are what make it unique. I play with many of the adult members who push me to improve and play at a higher level. I also have the opportunity to volunteer with junior squash camps and clinics, where I can give back to my community and the sport I love.

What skill have you mastered in squash that assists you in other areas of your daily life? G: Patience and discipline are skills that I have developed and improved through squash. To be a great squash player, these qualities are essential. One must have patience while playing a match, as well as during practice. Discipline is also needed because in order to improve, doing the hard work of repetitive practice is necessary to master a skill. These traits have helped in other areas of my life including school, other sports, and in my interactions with people.

In your opinion, what is the key to perseverance in sports? G: I think that having passion, a positive mindset, and goals are key to perseverance in sport. One must love the game to persist through the challenges of sport. More importantly, looking towards long term goals and focusing on the process, rather than the result, will carry one through the ups and downs of competitive sport.

What is your goal for the upcoming season? G: I hope that by the end of this upcoming season I can be in the top 20 in Canada in the U17 division.

Are there any teammates, partners, opponents, coaches, staff, or trainers at The Arbutus Club that have positively enhanced your Squash experience? How so? G: My coaches Drew and Matthew have been great teachers and mentors. They have supported me through ups and downs, shared their personal experiences, and have provided me with invaluable guidance on and off the court. In addition, the community has also been phenomenal, allowing me to participate in their practices and games, as well as being so positive.

If you could describe playing/participating in Squash with one word what would it be? G: Exhilarating. ♦

New Fridges and Display Unit in The Bistro

The Holiday Mystery Wine Box is Back

To support the growing demand and popularity of the Heat and Eat and Grab and Go programs, we have purchased a new centre island display unit to replace the old salad bar in The Bistro. The new display offers much more space for an expanded range of products. The new offerings will be packaged in sealed, easily discernible packaging to make assured choices and to ensure the safety of all members' food selections.

Due to the overwhelming demand, the Holiday Mystery Wine Box is back! A $400 value for only $300, the Mystery Wine Box provides fun, value, and intrigue under the Christmas tree, all in one cardboard container. Filled with 12 delectable wines carefully selected by our Director of Food and Beverage, Don Robinson, each case is fabulous and a good fit for the holiday season.

We have also purchased two new fridges to store our core Grab and Go items so that we have more, adequate back up of best-selling item. In response to the popularity of these quick service items for the busy Club member. These new units will be installed in October, just in time for the busy fall and winter season.

New Outdoor Awning on The Bistro Deck

Your box could contain one of the two coveted Golden Bottles. Just like Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, the golden tickets – or in this case, bottles – will be found by the lucky winner of this year’s wine lottery. Perhaps a bottle of 1982 Petrus or 2013 Dominus could be hiding under your tree without you even knowing it? A Christmas miracle indeed. Orders for the Holiday Mystery Wine Box will begin on Thursday, December 9 at arbutusclub.com or the Club app. If you have any questions, please contact Director of Food & Beverage, Don Robinson, at drobinson@arbutusclub.com or 604-219-0501. ♦

In response to the ever-increasing demands on the space confines of The Bistro, we are installing a new outdoor convertible space on The Bistro patio. The new structure will provide covered seating of approximately 48 seats and will be available for use year-round. The area will have its own separate heat and lighting controls with the ability to transform it into an open-air space during the warmer months. A great place for adults and kids alike, the extra seating will be welcomed by all members during those busy times in The Bistro when everyone is looking for a place to sit and enjoy a quick bite before moving on with their day. Installation is scheduled to be completed in early December.

Food Holiday & Beverage Recipes

As we head into the festive season, Chef Serge L’Ecuyer, is inspired by the province of Quebec and East Coast traditions. Join Serge in creating your own delicious, homemade holiday meal to enjoy with your loved ones. Recipes serve 8 people.

Bring rural Quebec Christmas home this year with a freshly baked Tourtière. This French-Canada meat pie dish is the perfect savoury treat for a holiday lunch or dinner. Typically, made with minced pork, veal, beef, wild game, or potatoes, this scrumptious snack is sure to evoke a feeling of hearty tradition. Regional varities of the dish are abound in Francophone areas of Canada. In Nova Scotia, Acadian pork tourtière often adds hare or chicken, while rural French Manitobans create a distinctive flavour by adding nutmeg, cloves, cinnamon, and dry mustard. There is no one correct filling; the meat depends on what is regionally available.

Group Fitness

The Group Fitness Team Talks In your opinion, what is the key to perseverance in fitness? Vienna Luke, Instructor: Enjoy it! Find something you like that makes you feel energized. Then on the harder days, when you don't feel like working out, you'll feel better after you do it, which will give you the push you need to get it done and stick with it. With autumn approaching, what do you enjoy most about fall/winter classes? Vienna Luke, Instructor: For me, September is the perfect time to get back into a routine, with one of my kids heading back to school. It's a great opportunity for our whole family to have a more structured schedule after relaxing and enjoying more flexible summer days. Tasha Vu, Instructor: Getting pumped up for a new season is the best. The weather is cooler and there's a buzz in the air. I get to see everyone back in classes again and catch up on everything from over the summer. For those who may not have participated in the FitPass program before, why is this fall the perfect time to embark on a new fitness journey? Daniela Tempesta, Instructor: I love hearing all the wonderful stories of summer memories – trips, celebrations, fun things members have done over the summertime, and seeing how much joy those things brought. Tasha Vu, Instructor: Trying new teachers & trying new classes. Do something you’ve always wanted to try or meet a teacher you’ve heard every one rave about. What do you enjoy most about teaching at the Club? Daniela Tempesta, Instructor: Feeding off each other’s energy! Let’s face it – instructors are human too and sometimes, what helps us get through a class is the incredible energy members bring with them – it makes that ‘one more rep’ so much more doable! I also love the fact that for that one hour in the day, each member has chosen to be present with me and others – it’s humbling and I honour that through some sweaty workouts! What unique skills can a member acquire in group fitness or FitPass classes? Nicole Funk, Instructor: I hope members feel empowered to make safe adjustments to their workout by doing the exercise options we provide designed to suit their specific needs.

Group Fitness

Why This Program? 1

Group classes are so good for your mental health. After months of not being able to socialize with each other due to COVID-19, this is a great way to reconnect with our fellow members.

2

Working out with a group makes you accountable and more motivated to attend.

3

If you find yourself stuck in a fitness rut, group fitness can be a perfect option for adding variety to your routine, while also ensuring a well-rounded approach to exercise. Do you dread the idea of running on a treadmill to get your cardio in? Try attending a Zumba class to improve endurance while burning just as many, if not more, calories. Feeling uninspired to focus on your flexibility? Try a yoga class to improve your range of motion and enhance your movement quality.

4

Regular exercise helps strengthen your bones by slowing down the loss of bone density. For older adults, exercise can decrease your risk of falling. Working out can also help with arthritis. Gentle Fit is the perfect class for older adults who want to maintain bone density, as well as increase strength and flexibility. ♦

Children's Centre

HOLIDAY TRADITIONS The Children’s Centre has many Christmas traditions. From PJ Pancake Day, to Santa’s Workshop camps, to decorating our classroom Christmas tree. But, nothing compares to our annual Winter Christmas Concert

T

he Arbutus Club preschoolers begin preparing for this special day in November. Each teacher chooses a song that the children enjoy singing and together they build a repertoire of songs, chants, rhymes, and dances to perform at the concert on Friday, December 17.

The class practices the lyrics, learning actions or dance steps, prepares props and learns to sing cohesively as a group. A big thing to learn for this age group is how to share the stage. Each child needs to be in control of their body and their impulses so they can move around when they are performing. How do we teach them to share the stage and stay still? Here is our strategy: We practice this by standing on a line of masking tape in the classroom. Each child gets the same spot and is placed next to the same child every class. We share with them tips on how to be respectful and what the parents would be happy to see. After many days, the children soon discover how to share the line and space around them. When they master this, they are proud of themselves and get excited to be “on stage” the day of. With our Christmas Concert, the learning is immense and the practice sessions are hard work. But because children naturally persevere when given the right encouragement, every year the children deliver the cutest, most precious concert you can imagine. As teachers, we feel fortunate to be a part of this special day. If you happen to walk by, be sure to stop for a moment and enjoy the lovely concert this winter season. ♦

If you would like more details on our 2021 Christmas Concert, holiday programs, or more information about our toddler and/or preschool programs, please contact Connie Smith, Children’s Centre Manager csmith@arbutusclub.com

Badminton

BADMINTON IS BACK A little birdie told us that badminton has returned to The Arbutus Club with drop-in play for all ages and new, co-ed programs for children Tips to Get Started get comfortable with your grip

relax when hitting

A fundamental feature of badminton is your grip. Whether it’s forehand, backhand, or panhandle grip, it’s important to get comfortable with how you hold the racquet. Pick up your racquet and practice switching from forehand to backhand and shadowing basic shots. The more you do it, the more natural switching and finding your grip will become.

It is a common misconception that the power in a perfect badminton shot comes from strength behind your swing. However, your muscles need to be relaxed in order to move freely. If you’re gripping your racquet too tight and tensing up before hitting you will not be able to generate a lot of racquet speed. You’re not trying to lift weights here; you’re trying to generate power through motion. Stay relaxed when hitting. Let the racquet and your swing do more of the work.

recover back to centre During a game, it is important to return back to the centre of the court after each shot. From the centre of the court, you’re an equal distance away from each corner and it will be easier to reach the next shot.

Minor Hockey

HUSTLE AND HEART After a break due to the pandemic, The Arbutus Club Minor Hockey Association is back together on the Main Rink for a new season The Arbutus Club Minor Hockey Association is back in action for the 2021-2022 Minor Hockey Season. With the previous year being a complete wash for game action, it has been refreshing to have players on the ice and parents in the stands cheering on our Avalanche teams. Seeing the reunions after a year of an empty rink has really showed that being within our Minor Hockey Association is much more than just about hockey; we're a community.

More Hockey Information Information for the upcoming season is available in the Recreation Services Programs Brochure at arbutusclub.com. If you require further information please contact Jason Fothergill, Minor Hockey Director, at jfothergill@arbutusclub.com.

44

The Bark fa l l 2021

Hockey, a Sport for a Lifetime The friendships that are formed can last a lifetime. Playing the game and hanging out before and after is what it is all about. Unlike many other Minor Hockey Associations that are much larger, where players are moving around team to team, members within our program get the unique opportunity to create a bond that is tough to match since they have played together on the same teams for years. Not only are the players in our program able to create friendships and memories, so is our parent group. Long term friendships at the Club begin with someone you may have never known until you watched a Minor Hockey game together. From cheering rink side, to a beverage and an appetizer in The Lounge, it not only makes watching the game exciting, but you get to do it with friends that you met at the rink.

Food Minor & Beverage Hockey Our Graduating Players One of the truly unique stories we hear is from our graduating players who move along to different colleges and universities all around the world. Yet when they return for summer break, the first people they call are their “hockey buddies” to get together for some open hockey. Case and point; when we held a graduating game this past summer for our players that missed out on their final season, the response was outstanding. While the action on the ice was nothing but smiles and good banter, when you looked rink side there were just as many parents with similar exuberance and conversation. It illustrates that being part of The Arbutus Club Minor Hockey Associaton is simply more than just hockey; it is all about family and friends.

Physiotherapy and Wellness

FIT FOR THE MOUNTAIN With summer in the rear-view mirror, and with all the biking, boating and celebrating that was done, we start to think about what our bodies will need to be able to perform well during the winter months Let’s focus on snow sports. Whether its performance you are after or injury prevention, one should start with understanding what muscle groups are integral in the force generation and stability requirements of downhill skiing, cross country skiing, or snowboarding.

1

1

1

2

3

#1 QUADRICEPS Quadriceps are probably the most used muscle group in skiing. These muscles hold you in position as you ski and provide protection for your knees. Great exercises for the quadriceps include squats and lunges. Focus on complex movements of strength and endurance.

2

#2 HAMSTRINGS AND GLUTES When downhill skiing, you typically hold your body in a flexed position, which is leaning forward from the hips. This requires great strength and endurance from your hamstrings and glutes as they help stabilize your body. Work your hamstrings and glutes with deadlifts, one leg deadlifts, step ups, and hamstring rolls on an exercise ball.

46

The Bark fa l l 2021

#3 INNER AND OUTER THIGHS Your inner thighs work hard to keep your skis parallel, while your outer thighs stabilize your body and help you steer. Some great exercises are side lunges, Swiss exercise ball squeezes for the inner thigh, or sliding side lunges.

4

4

4

#4 SHOULDERS Your shoulders are extremely active while skiing and snowboarding and a fall could lead to shoulder dislocations or rotator cuff tears. Exercises like chest flys or shoulder internal/external rotation will help stabilize and strengthen in order to help prevent injury.

5

5 #5 ABS AND BACK When you're in a flexed, bent over stance, your back has to work very hard to hold your body in that position. To protect your spine from injury, your core must be conditioned. Work these muscles with exercises like bicycle crunches, V-ups, medicine ball twists, pully system wood chops, back extensions, lat pulls, and dumbbell rows.

5

STAY INJURY FREE Start by increasing the strength of these muscle groups, low reps (10-12), progressing to heavier weight. Then, transition to higher reps (15-20) and lighter weight as you get closer to the ski season. Balance and stability will help keep you injury free.

Need Some Help Getting Started? FREE FIT TO SKI WORKSHOP #49550 We are offering a free Fit to Ski Workshop led by Justin Mazzei, our in-house Physiotherapist, on Monday, October 25, 2021 from 1:00-2:30 pm in Arbutus Studio 1. If you want to ensure that you are fit and ready to get on the slopes, we encourage you to sign up for what will be a very informative session. Meet the Coach

BRIAN HIEBERT Brian is passionate about creating positive experiences for kids and coaches so that they learn teamwork, humility, and self-confidence through volleyball. Brian fell in love with the game in Grade 8 while playing in Port Moody on his school's beach volleyball court and never slowed down. When he was 20 years old, he moved to Toronto to train with the National Team and to compete on the world stage in beach volleyball. After 20 years of beach volleyball, Brian found his way back to indoor volleyball as a coach at West Point Grey Academy and in 2018 he co-founded Smash Volleyball. Forever a student of the game, he is now an international referee with a goal to represent Canada at the 2024 and 2028 Olympics. ♦
