THE PRESIDENT’S LETTER
Dear Members, I cannot believe this is my final President's letter, as my term is coming to an end. This seems to be a common theme expressed by former Presidents – just how quickly the year goes by. It's also hard to believe that I have been on the Board of Directors for eight years now. Although these past few years have been challenging, it has also been equally rewarding. I have worked alongside a wonderful group of directors and volunteers during my tenure, far too many to name. But, I have thoroughly enjoyed getting to know each member, many of whom have become life-long friends. There is a great sense of satisfaction volunteering for our Club and I would encourage you to get involved by serving on an Activity or House Committee if you haven't already.
This year we are saying goodbye to three fantastic Directors, Lawrence Chee, Christine McCaffrey, and Nicky Paris. Each of them has given the Club innumerable hours of valuable service over the past four years, not only as directors but as leaders on various House Committees. Their contribution will be missed.
As I stated in the Annual Report, I'm looking forward to the end of the pandemic and the unprecedented challenges the Board faced over the past two years. It has been a difficult time for all. I want to thank the members for your patience, the directors for their professionalism and support, and the staff and management for their guidance and for keeping us all safe, active, and engaged.
I hope you can attend the Annual General Meeting on Thursday, April 21, at 7 pm. Fortunately, we can meet in person this year, at which time our Treasurer, Mr. Soren Rasmussen, will report on our strong financial results. I will provide my closing Presidential Report and introduce you to the esteemed members of the 2022/23 Board and Executive. I hope to see you there.
Despite the obstacles, the House Committees remained focused on completing their many mandates, keeping the Club moving in a positive direction. The Activity Committees were also busy advocating for their programs and the members who enjoy them.
I want to close by extending my best wishes and support to our incoming President Jeff Thorsteinson and his associated Board members. Jeff genuinely cares about the Club and its membership. He leads with curiosity, values collaboration, and is respectful in all dealings. I can confidently say the Club is in good hands.
This year, the Club underwent two significant renovations: The Lounge, which reopened its doors just after Labour Day, and the 3rd-floor catering renovation, scheduled for completion in May. Members love the refreshed Lounge and I do not doubt that the catering renovation (featured on pg.15) will be spectacular too. With the completion of these projects, as well as Arbutus 2020, we really have a brand-new Club. Now we can start planning for the future. That is one of the great successes of our Club; our commitment to long-term planning to ensure the stability of our community, buildings, and grounds for years to come. This year we are losing two exceptional Senior Managers; Dale Cadeau, CFO, and Sue Snow, Recreation Services Manager. I have had the pleasure of working closely with them both and have witnessed first-hand how instrumental they have been in the Club's success over the past twenty years. I wish them both all the best in their retirement. They will be truly missed.
2
I want to extend a special thank you to our Immediate Past President and retiring director, Sandi Munro. Looking back at Sandi's year as Club President, she really had a rough twelve months. The pandemic was new to everyone, and she was instrumental in assisting management and the Board as they navigated numerous obstacles and ever-changing protocols and mandates. Sandi truly went above and beyond, and on behalf of the members, thank you!
The Bark s p r i n g 2022
Once again, thank you for the honour to serve as your Club President – I will cherish the opportunity you gave me. Sincerely,
Alan Bailey Club President president@arbutusclub.com

DALE CADEAU RETIRES The Arbutus Club's Chief Financial Officer is ready to hit the links as he says a bittersweet farewell to our members and staff after 24 years

Always the earliest riser, he's usually the first one at the Club in the morning arriving between 4:30-5:30am. Clearly outside of his accounting duties, "this always came in handy when it snowed, because Dale would be the first outside shovelling the walkway" jokingly remarks CEO Brent Elkington.
His knowledge in accounting and I.T. is renowned in the club industry.
Thankfully, it wasn't just his punctuality that earned him respect and adoration from his colleagues. Brent continues, "his knowledge in accounting and I.T. is renowned in the club industry." He's not only good with numbers, but also helps implement software, has his

"Although many may think Dale is quiet and may appear grumpy, but it is all for show. He very caring person and would do anything for members and staff, especially his administration team."
"He has an unwavering support for all things Toronto, his disdain for people having too much fun in the workplace (cake parties, wearing Halloween costumes etc), his hollering at you from the office once you’re already halfway down the hall...he doesn’t want you to know this, but a kind and generous person is hidden beneath the gruff exterior" says Accounting Manager, Mike Hamar. It's an opinion that is shared by both professional colleagues and Arbutus Club members alike. After years of crunching numbers, Dale is looking forward to a schedule change. "I'm going to sleep in past 4am, start reading books again, travel more, golf way more, train for a half marathon, and try not to bother my wife on her days off" says an oddly gleeful Mr. Cadeau. Dale, we know you'll be getting more sleep, but don't forget to miss us, ok? ♦

SUE SNOW BIDS ADIEU After 26 years of making us smile and helping us stay active, Recreation Services Manager Sue Snow looks to start a new chapter

ith an endless amount of energy, always pep in her step, and a nearly permanent positive attitude, there are endless reasons why we are going to miss Recreation Services Manager, Sue Snow, when she retires after 26 years at the end of April.
I have never worked with a more dedicated and hard working manager.
With a background in education, fitness, and aquatics, Sue was hired in July 1996 as the Assistant Recreation Services Manager. At the time the pool was newly renovated and Sue immediately transformed our aquatics program. Over the next two decades she helped transform many of our Recreation Services programs at the Club.
to look anywhere else, Sue was perfect for the role" says CEO Brent Elkington. "She put the members first in anything we did at the Club" he continues. This sentiment is echoed by the Pros that worked with her closely over the years. "She always looked out for the interests of Arbutus Club members and staff under her guidance" says former Tennis Director, Pat Macken.
When Sue's predecessor moved roles there was no question as to who should assume the head of the Recreation Services department. "We didn't have

Those who know Sue well will also attest that her work ethic isn't the only characteristic that sets her apart. "She's
incredibly funny, thoughtful, and will go the extra mile to help anyone in need" says member Myra McCloy. The good will is mutual with Sue. "I vividly remember the day of my first interview all those years ago. I was waiting at Club Reception and observed young families, senior tennis players, bridge players, and children of all ages accessing the Club. Just from that quick snapshot I knew that this was the place for me," she reminisces. "I was so grateful that I was the candidate chosen and 26 years later I still feel that way today." Though don't expect Sue to sit back and relax in retirement. "I'm hoping to travel, I am considering taking art classes, yoga classes, and I want to volunteer" she says. "Thanks to all of you for making my time at the Club such a positive and rewarding experience." ♦

Maria Grazia Postiglione
spa supervisor and esthetician We are thrilled to introduce Maria Grazia Postiglione, our new Supervisor in the Spa at Arbutus. Maria was born and raised in Ischia, Italy, a volcanic island situated in the Gulf of Naples. Ischia is famous for thermal baths and natural hot springs, making it a favourite destination for tourists seeking some pampering. Growing up in a family that owns a health and beauty store, Maria learned all about the spa industry, becoming tremendously knowledgeable about skin care and spa treatments. Maria’s motto is that “life is all about balance”. When Maria is not working, she is spending time with family, visiting new places, or taking long walks. Though, she also quite enjoys staying home and watching a series on Netflix or reading motivational books. Both warm and incredibly friendly, Maria offers relaxing facials, beautiful manicures, pedicures, and a variety of other treatments.
Hossein Farghadani badminton instructor
It’s no secret that badminton is on the upswing at the Club and the Recreation Services team is thrilled to introduce Hossein Farghdani, our new Badminton Instructor. Hossein first dabbled in badminton when he was only 8 years old and has now been playing and coaching for 27 years. “Coaching is like meditation for me,” says Hossein. Born to be a coach, Hossein loves observing his students improve it gives him satisfaction and joy. Quite the avid adventurer, Hossein enjoys biking, working out, and hiking with his dog, Roxy. When he’s not on the trail, he also enjoys cooking, watching TV/movies, and studying sports. If you think Hossein looks familiar, you’re right! He knows the Club well and previously worked as an attendant in the Fitness Centre.

Gavin recently hopped over the Georgia Straight, moving from Victoria. Naturally energetic and eager to assist our members, he has a passion for all racquet sports and has been playing squash for almost 15 years and pickleball for 1 and a half years. Gavin started coaching squash when he was only 16 years old. A former national level squash player, he has been able to help other players improve their game. What started out as quick tips, soon turned into coaching. Gavin is very passionate about helping people become the best possible players that they can be. When Gavin is not at work, he loves to be active. Whether it's going on a hike, biking, or just exploring the city.
Hannah Thompson full-time receptionist
Offering a warm welcome and a smile, Reception always sets a friendly tone when our members enter the Club. The team is about to get even sunnier with the introduction of our newest full-time Receptionist, Hannah Thompson. Hannah recently moved to Vancouver from Ontario to complete her postgraduate education degree at UBC, so she is no stranger to problem solving skills and thinking on her feet. Upon graduation, Hannah is hoping to teach elementary school children. Outside of work, Hannah is a competitive figure skater. She was going to compete nationally, but the competition was cancelled due to COVID-19. Let’s hope she’ll bring home some gold in the near future. ♦

BANQUET REJUVENATION The Arbutus Club's catering spaces will be receiving an elegant and modern facelift – expected to inspire a renewed interest and offer increased functionality for future banquets and special events
W
ith a storied history of playing host to weddings, business meetings, private dinners, and member events, our third floor banquet spaces are frequently utilized areas. The popularity of the Strathcona and Quilchena Terrace meant the facilities were showing signs of their age and in need of refresh. Following the success of the Arbutus 2020 infrastructure project, there was a unique opportunity to integrate the banquet rooms with the modernized design elements featured throughout the rest of the Club. Creating continuity and flow, the renovation will encompass materials and designs featured in other areas of the Club’s facilities. With a sophisticated and warm palette, attention to detail and careful selection of work by local artists, the West Coast beauty of our surroundings will echo throughout the inside of the new catering spaces.
individualized stalls and washing stations, offering a more private, luxurious, reprieve from the main banquet rooms. Construction began in early January and will continue into the spring. The renovation project hopes to conclude just in time for a warm summer of socializing. A new calibre of event experience is coming to the Club and we can't wait to see you host your next event with us. ♦
While the footprint of the banquet areas will remain largely unchanged, new features have been integrated into the design to allow for multi-purpose needs. A pre-function bar will be incorporated into the Strathcona Room, providing the perfect opportunity for a pre-event social or cocktail hour and extended functionality. Event experience will also be further enhanced by incorporating seamless audiovisual elements for easy and discreet access. Additionally, the third floor washrooms will also be reallocated, with

ALL SEASON DINING The Bistro Patio is undergoing enhancements that will provide a covered awning, allowing for increased dining space, event functionality, and use during all seasons of the year
D
uring the winter months The Bistro Patio is usually only for brave folks well adapted to the cold – not for the faint of heart. However, early this year the patio has been a buzz of activity as construction labourers work tirelessly to ready the new deck awning in time for the outdoor dining season. The structure will provide additional undercover seating all year round, complete with LED lighting and heating during the cooler months of the year. With sliding glass doors, a south-facing shade system, and a louvred roof system that will provide healthy air flow, the area will surely satisfy those that wish to dine al fresco. "We are really excited about the new patio structure," says Claudia Luna, Bistro Manager. "We have a great patio that is underutilized because of the weather, but soon we will be able to accommodate more members 365 days of the year." ♦

Members of Excellence
a humble doctor Motivated by the desire to help others, Dr Purssell knew he wanted to be a doctor at a young age, pursuing Emergency Medicine followed by Toxicology in order to better treat patients, and advocate for serious change
A
n Arbutus Club member of 39 years, Dr Purssell is an Emergency Physician at VGH, a Professor at UBC with the Department of Emergency Medicine, and the Medical Lead of BC Drug and Poison Information Centre. "Being able to help people and understand what I needed to know in order to do that is how I became interested in pursuing medicine,"explained Purssell. After completing his Medical Degree at UBC, Dr Purssell completed his fellowship training in Emergency Medicine at McGill University, followed by a Toxicology Fellowship with the American College of Medical Toxicology. Training in toxicology, the treatment of poisoning and drug overdose, naturally followed emergency medicine. Dr Purssell said it was a simple decision, "because drug use is a common issue, there are many people who have overdoses for a variety of reasons. With a greater understanding of the mechanisms of how the drugs are causing toxicity, there is a greater understanding of what sort of treatment needs to be provided." Since first stepping foot into the ER Purssell said, "I recognized that every patient in the Emergency Department is having a difficult time, some are having the most difficult time they will ever have in their life," Purssell considers it a privilege to help.
To be able to help out in these situations is something I still find very rewarding. From 1987 to 1993 Dr Purssell co-founded and was a Director at the Royal College Residency in Emergency Medicine at UBC. He later became the Head of the Division of Emergency Medicine in the Department of Surgery, taking a central role in the creation of the UBC Department of Emergency Medicine, officially formed in 2008. In addition to his achievements in medicine at UBC, Dr Purssell played a major role in supporting Mandatory Alcohol Screening, more commonly known as random breath testing by police. "It started off by looking at situations when patients would be involved in terrible car crashes and end up in the Emergency
18
The Bark s p r i n g 2022
Members of Excellence Department. We wondered whether or not the drivers were being charged with impaired driving. This initial interest resulted in a 10 year long study accessing medical databases to determine that only 11% of intoxicated drivers were actually being charged with impaired driving after a crash.
Purssell. He continued to explain the concern about shifting from a prescription opioid, to using drugs in the illicit drug supply. "Although there was information that was mostly based on surveys, there wasn't information based on administrative data," he recalled.
Although doctors had blood samples from these patients in order to manage their medical treatment, most of these patients were not facing charges. Subsequent research proved that without legal consequences, these drivers frequently engaged in impaired driving, despite seriously injuring themselves and others. "It was a terrible situation for everyone concerned," Dr Purssell explained.
Uniquely positioned to access multiple databases, including long-term, detailed prescription data, Dr Purssell with the help of experts was able to divide individuals without a history of substance use, who were treated with prescription opioid for pain, into four groups. The "chronic group", those who were treated with opioids needing to take them most days for up to, or exceeding, 2 years proved to be at highest risk for IDU.
"The study was published and actually received a lot of media attention," recalls Dr Purssell. "I thought something might actually happen, but it didn't at that stage." However, Dr Purssell didn't stop there. He chose to take advice from colleagues who said, "As an individual you don't really have much chance of changing the way things happen, but when you work together with important associations, you can."
"If you take opioids everyday, you will become tolerant to the effects, a larger dosage is required to have the same effect, and stopping will result in unpleasant withdrawal symptoms." Dr Purssell expalined how the study concluded that the focus needs to be on providing more support to the chronic group.
Dr Purssell got involved with the BC Medical Association (now called Doctors of BC) and he worked on the Emergency Services Committee, eventually becoming the Chair. One of the committee's responsibilities was to come up with resolutions to support important issues intersecting public health and emergency medicine.
I actually learned a lot about working with others to influence important change. "I had no idea how to go about lobbying for change. The combination of working with the Medical Association and Mother's Against Drunk Driving (MADD Canada) meant we had the ability to approach and influence government. And, eventually laws were passed provincially and federally to make significant change," Purssell explained. Dr Purssell's ability to garner positive change did not go unnoticed. He was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2012 and an Award of Recognition from the Doctors of BC in 2019. But, don't expect him to want to talk much about either of these awards. He humbly noted, "It's nice to have this recognition that the work is important, indicating acknowledgment from others that the work did make a difference." In October 2021, Dr Purssell and his team published a UBC Study on Prescription Opioid Treatment for non-cancer pain and the subsequent initiation of Injection Drug Use (IDU). "With injection drug use, we have such toxic drugs now. People are dying, about 6 per day in BC, a true public health emergency." explained
"Every attempt needs to be made to make sure these individuals will not transition to IDU. Specially considering the catastrophic outcome of the drug supply that is around now. Every patient's journey is unique, and this really highlights the importance of shared decision making that puts the needs and well-being of the patient first," Purssell concluded. Dr Purssell believes we need to improve access to multidisciplinary pain management, providing patients with more resources. Multidisciplinary approaches to treat pain include access to non-invasive interventions like exercise therapy, rehabilitation, cognitive therapy, and also more invasive approaches, like using nerve blocks. "We can't continue to have people dying, it needs to change." Dr Purssell encourages us all to advocate by asking our own health care professionals about pain management. Continuing to support many people with the important work he does, what helps Dr Purssell persevere with such passion is enjoying the outdoors with friends and family. Dr Purssell became a member of The Arbutus Club in 1983 after he married his wife Lori (née Hay), whose parents were Founding Members. With three children, the Purssell family accessed the Club often, and Lori continues to use it regularly. "My wife has done courageous work as a nurse in the ICU at VGH, " Dr Purssell pointed out when talking about his family. Although he took a hiatus during COVID-19, Dr Purssell looks forward to spending time in the Club's Fitness Centre. "I think it's wonderful, very well set up. During normal times I'm there at least three times a week. The trainers are absolutely terrific, getting people on a good program and doing the right things to keep them fit and healthy, while avoiding injury." Acknowledging that COVID-19 has been difficult for everyone, Purssell shared his final thoughts,"There are an awful lot of front line workers who have been working very hard through a very difficult time." Not surprisingly, Dr Purssell expresses his appreciation and respect for the dedication of his colleagues. ♦ arbutusclub.com

pura vida mindset Triathloner and Arbutus Club member, Harrison Sali, details how he feels most free when he's giving it his all.
H
arrison Sali has been a member of The Arbutus Club for as long as he can remember, alongside his mother, Roxanne, father, Barrie, and brother, Max.
During middle and high school, the Club served as his home away from home – a place where Harrison could hang out with friends and focus his energy in the Fitness Centre. "It’s a place where we can come together with friends and socialize, a place where we can work out and stay fit and healthy" says Sali. Since 2018 Harrison has been participating in triathlon and has utilized our facilities in his training regimen. From biking across Europe to participating in the RUNVAN® Fall Classic, he has his sights set on an Ironman.
When did you begin participating in triathlons? Harrison: I first started participating in the sport of triathlon in 2018, when I signed up for a sprint triathlon in Abbotsford. I have been involved in sports my whole life, but something about swimming, running, and biking consumed my mind after that event.
What do you enjoy most about your sport? H: My favourite part of participating in this sport is how long it can take. You can do something like a sprint tri, where the pace is fast and it’s over before you know it, or you can do something like a full Ironman, which I am currently training for. This whole other monster demands patience and technique, as you are out there for 12 hours or longer.
Has the pandemic had any impact on how you participate? H: The pandemic shut down Ironman and many other events like it due to mass participation, so to keep up with all my training I set other goals for myself that weren’t event based. For example, my friend and I ran from Deep Cove to Horseshoe Bay, also called the Baden Powell trail. Over

50 kms of running and a lot of elevation. Plus, it was in the middle of December, so time was of the essence. I enjoyed every minute of it. To keep up with my biking, my friend and I bike-packed across Europe. 1400 km, 8 countries, 23 days, and a few mountain passes through the Alps. You could say that kept my legs nice and sore.
How do you stay committed to your craft? H: I’m inspired to stay committed because I love it, plain and simple. If I didn’t love the training, the competition, the ups and especially the downs, I wouldn’t be doing it. Something this pandemic will never take away from me, is my love for fitness and being the best that I can be in whatever I pursue.
How has The Arbutus Club helped you become a triathlon athlete? H: My participation in triathlon sports is not uncommon to The Arbutus Club. I see lots of members who have completed Ironman competitions and who work really hard to keep up with their own fitness goals. That’s another thing I love about the sport, I’m not special or unique, I’m just putting in the work like everyone else, getting out there and doing my best. That’s all you can ask of yourself in the end.
What are your goals for the next year? H: My 2022 goal is to complete my first full Ironman Triathlon – something the pandemic has stopped me from doing over the past 2 years. Thankfully, I have other goals. But, the time is now and nothing will stop me (fingers crossed).
How have triathlons influenced your life outside of the sport? H: I’ve learned many skills, but I think the most important is being mentally strong when you become physically weak and tired. It is in this special place of pain and discomfort that you grow character, you learn more about your mental fortitude in this specific time than you can ever imagine. This will not only make you a more confident human, but you will learn to relax even under the most intense situations.
What do you think the key to perseverance is? H: I believe the key to perseverance is to not lose sight of why you are doing it, that you are not just going through the motions, but feeling every breath, every stroke, every stride, and doing it with purpose and intention. I do this because I love every aspect of the sport.
If you could describe playing/participating in your sport with one word or phrase what would it be and why? H: If I could describe the sport of triathlon with one phrase, it would be “pura vida”…pure life, because I am my most pure when I’m out there, giving it my all. That is when I feel most free. ♦

Gardener's Corner
YOU GROW, GIRL Ainsley Thompson, the Club's Gardener, has curated a beautiful summer display for all to enjoy, here are some highlights including environmentally friendly and edible plants for the Club's Food & Beverage team
COLEUS
VICTORIA BLUE SALVIA
Plectranthus scutellarioides Coleus, made popular as Victorian-era bedding plants, and one of my personal favourite plants. This tender annual comes in many shades of colour, leaf texture and sizes. Coleus is in the mint family. Leaf colours include green, yellow, pink, red, purple, and maroon. The plant does bloom occasionally at the end of the long stalks. Remember to trim flower spikes in late summer in order to extend the life of the plant and growth of new colourful leaves.
Salvia farinacea This variety has masses for beautiful spikes of royal blue flowers rising above the foliage from early summer to mid fall. The flowers are excellent for cutting and compliment any dried arrangements.
Coleus cuttings can be taken from plants before the first frost in the fall and placed in water to root. Plant the rooted cuttings, start with a large pot that the plant can grow into, otherwise, you’ll be repotting this fast-growing plant before you know it. Keep near a sunny window for the winter.
Victoria Blue Salvia is a good choice for attracting butterflies and hummingbirds to your yard. Don't forget to clean away the deadheads to encourage new blooms.
GERANIUM
22
Pelargonium The sun-loving plants that we commonly call “geraniums” were introduced to Europe by Dutch traders who brought them from South Africa in the early 18th century. Since these new plants resembled the hardy, wild geraniums already growing in Europe, botanists mistakenly grouped them together into the same genus.
SUCCULENT SEASON
When it was later discovered that these new “geraniums” differed from the European geraniums in the shape of their petals, the number of stamens, and other factors, they were reclassified under Pelargonium, meaning “stork’s bill” a reference to the long, sharply pointed shape of their seedpod. Their original common name stuck, however, and we still say “geranium” when we actually mean “pelargonium."
Succulent plants are easy to love. They can tolerate dry, indoor conditions, and they don’t require much watering. Their thick fleshy leaves and stems, as well as their enlarged roots, allow them to retain water. They’re like living sculptures, and you can use them to make indoor gardens. You don’t have to plant your succulents alone. Succulent plants “play nice together,” so you can put several varieties of succulents in the same container to create a beautiful, low maintenance and diverse arrangement for your home.

UN-BEET-ABLE VEGGIES
SNAP PEAS
When we grow our own food plants, we develop a greater appreciation for the food, our gardens, and our own ability to provide for ourselves and our families.
Pisum sativum Peas are a great crop for the urban gardener or anyone short on space and make a great companion in the spring garden. They can be grown in containers and trellised to grow vertically, even in partial shade. Plus, they are one of the best crops for freezing for winter use.
There are many good reasons to grow your own vegetables: it’s environmentally friendly because fewer resources will be used in growing and getting the food to your table, and it saves wildlife habitat by reducing the need to expand cultivated land. An additional, often overlooked reason to grow vegetables is that they are attractive and often unique in appearance. When you look at a vegetable plant, don’t just think about the result; also think about the appearance of the plant and what it can add to your ornamental garden.
After April 1, sow only enation-resistant varieties in areas where aphids carry the virus. Try: Cascadia - this delicious snap pea was developed for west coast growers. The vines do not need trellising, but tumble about, growing to around 24” tall. The pods are crunchy and sweet and can be picked early for snow peas. Enation resistant.
For a tasty and rewarding snack, featured here are a few simple vegetables you may want to consider trying to grow.
BEETS
RADISH
Beets have attractive red-veined, dark green foliage. These plants look good when planted in small groups in a border, they can even be included in large mixed containers. Pick at any size and eat the greens too.
Raphanus sativus All parts of the radish are edible, from the swollen tap root to the leaves and even the seed pods and seeds themselves. They are incredibly quick to grow and can go from seed to harvest in under a month. Radishes prefer cool weather and will satisfy the Spring gardening itch like no other. Pick promptly when radishes are the size of marbles. Try: French Breakfast - red at the top with blunt white tips, this popular heirloom dates from the 1880s. The radishes are 2” long and perfect for slicing and salads.
Beta vulgaris Beets make for incredibly healthy eating. Both the roots and the leaves are excellent sources of antioxidants, minerals and vitamin C. They also contain betaine, a compound that is essential for cardiovascular health.
Beets are very good for beginner gardeners and gardening with kids. Try: Touchstone Gold - the roots of this garden classic are smooth and orange on the outside, with intensely golden flesh beneath. The green tops are tall and strong - not to mention sweet and delicious. Touchstone belongs in every foodie's garden.
ECHEVERIA One of my favourite succulents at the moment is Echeveria. Varieties are generally blue-grey or grey-green in colour. The waxy leaves of echeveria can also be green or purple, with some types developing stunning patterns. Most varieties bloom in the summer with gorgeous clusters of sunset coloured bell shaped flowers on tall stems. If your Echeveria becomes leggy simply prune off the leggy bit and propagate a brand new plant in a pot with some fresh succulent potting soil. Water sparingly and allow roots to develop. arbutusclub.com

The Bistro goes local Food & Beverage
We love where we live, so we've made an effort to support local businesses in The Bistro. Our local partners allow for a more sustainable approach, nurtures a sense of community, and invests in local entrepreneurship. Check out some of the Vancouver-based suppliers below:
Hoochy Booch Before Kristin Zerbin aka Booch Mama, found kombucha, she was tired, bloated and “allergic to everything.” Kombucha was the catalyst and the one thing that has brought the most impact for her. When Kirstin made Vancouver her home, she was looking to build a community to teach people how to brew their own kombucha and take care of their health. Hoochy Booch, it’s kombucha brewed and bottled in Vancouver and available in The Bistro.

The Good Stuff
The Bistro recently introduced ACV (Apple Cider Vinegar) shots. Gut health is the foundation for overall health, and apple cider vinegar is a gut friendly product with many other benefits. As founder Rhoda Chilcott realized that the taste of apple cider vinegar is a lot to take, she created ACVeveryday ™ shots as an easier way to achieve better health.
“Great days start with great mornings”, this is “The Good Stuff” motto. The company was founded by Michael Steele and Graeme Taylor, both big smoothie fans. Vancouver is in The Good Stuff’s DNA and they believe that there is no better place in the world to be running a business that focuses on helping people lead healthy lives with nutrition, convenience, and sustainability. You can find The Good Stuff product at The Bistro’s cappuccino bar.
ACV is part of Lula Natural Foods, a women-owned business that is proud to be able to give back to the community as well; they support the Canucks Autism Network, Supa Society, Heads Up Guys (managing and preventing depression in men), the Downtown Eastside Women's Centre and Feast of Fields.

The Arbutus Food Club & Beverage Archives
It's that time of year when our outdoor courts spring to life again, so what better time to take an archive flashback to the 1970s when the tennis program was just getting into full swing
O
ver the last two years, the Communications team has been taking a deep dive into the Club's archives each week on social media for our Throwback Thursdays. The retrospective posts focused largely on the beginnings of the Club from our sod turning ceremony, marking the start of construction, to the swiftly expanding programs offered during the latter half of the 1960s. These black and white flashbacks of our roots proved immensely popular with members, who were happy to identify family members or provide a reflective anecdote of an event.
Hopping forward a decade, we decided to move into the coloured era of the Farrah Fawcett shag, tube socks, and short shorts. While the foundation of the Club may have been built upon ice sports, the diversity of programming really hit its stride in the 1970s with the growth of racquet sports. "It was a lot of fun for young families at the time, especially those beginning to play tennis" says longtime member Anne Paris. She joined The Arbutus Club in 1971, alongside her husband Raymond Paris, and has many fond memories of the Tennis program during the decade. Recalling

that there were only four outdoor courts at the time, Anne says there was a unique, family-focused feeling amongst all those that shared the space. "Playing tennis [during the 70s] was a unifying experience and you made friends for life. It felt like we were all on the same level and it was more-so about the fun that we had together," Anne recalls. "In the 70s we were all involved in multiple different activities and events, it was very family oriented."

anne paris , arbutus club member
Over the years, tennis has expanded and has become one of the fixture programs that define the heart and soul of The Arbutus Club. While we may have added more courts and loyal participants, the program remains accessible for all ages and experience levels. We look forward to many more years of tennis memories to come. ♦

NEW PROGRAM WEBPAGES To provide more information on our programming, arbutusclub.com has reinvigorated the personal training, Pilates, and tennis webpages
I
n an effort to provide members with more digital program information, we have created a pilot project that has seen the creation of webpages for personal training, Pilates, and tennis on arbutusclub.com. When the new arbutusclub.com design was launched in 2019, many of our program pages were consolidated into a single program listing and most information was expanded upon in our seasonal Recreation Services Programs Brochure. The new arbutusclub.com pages allow each program to post updates and house static information. These electronic resources will help cut down on the number of hard-copy program pamphlets and brochures that are printed throughout the year.
The new pages feature program details, such as service information, lesson rates, instructor biographies, booking instructions, policies, contact information, and much more. ♦ Login to your account and navigate to the pages under Recreation and Club Services

CANCELLATION POLICY UPDATE

Cancellations requests must be made by the Monday before the first day of programs. For example, for Spring 2022 our programs start on Monday, March 28 and all cancellation requests must be received by Monday, March 21.
Cancellation requests must be made two business days before the start date/time of the camp. For example, if camp begins on Monday at 9:00 am, requests must be received by 9:00 am the Thursday prior.
For month-long programs, such as Tennis and Pickleball clinics, cancellation requests must be made one week before the class start date. For Advanced Aquatic programs and First Aid courses, cancellation requests must be made two weeks before the class date.

JUST KEEP SWIMMING Our Swim Team provides youth the perfect opportunity to develop social skills, boost cognitive benefits, and enhance physical health
M
any studies have revealed that swim training can increase a young person's ability to concentrate and learn at a faster rate. This type of physical training stimulates the mind for up to three hours, which can help to improve exam performance. A report, written by Professor Ian Cumming and sport, health, and exercise science academic Karl New titled, “Are Adolescent Competitive Swimmers Cleverer?”, is the first major academic review of the benefits of swimming on the educational achievements of young people. The report details the positive impact of regular aerobic exercise on scholastic performance. Their findings show that short and long-term effects of regular training increase the number of brain cells and connections between them. This leads

to improved attention and accuracy in completing tasks and longer physical and psychological benefits, including management of long-term conditions such as ADHD, obesity, and dementia. Although it has been known for some time that exercise has a positive impact on the brain, competitive swimming is unique in that it delivers the optimal amount and frequency

of exercise to deliver cognitive benefits. Swimming on a team also provides the psychological components of being with a team, which is also incredibly positive for young people. During training swimmers are always thinking about what they are doing and trying to improve their technique, which means they are using both their brain as well as their muscles, effectively stimulating all areas of the body. Recently, an educator brought to our instructors attention that swimmers at his school were hard-working and performed highly academically. While their comments were anecdotal, it is supported by empirical evidence with Professor Cumming's report providing evidence about the additional benefits of swimming for our competitive swimmers. Competitive swimming clubs, like other sports clubs, can offer an environment where young people can learn about the good techniques for success in life such as goal setting, stress management and social interaction. Although the article focuses on competitive swimming, many of the benefits play out in recreational swimming and it provides an opportunity for all of us to reflect on how team sport, and swimming, can improve individual's health, and wellness.

The Arbutus Club Swim Team (Eagle Rays) Why do you choose to take part in swimming and to be a member of the Swim Team? My mom signed me up because she wanted something to tire me out and she thought it was an important life skill to have. I also get to swim with my friend Caleb. How does the Swim Team and swimming activities benefit your school's academic success? The swim team has taught me how important practice is. Practicing has helped me become a faster swimmer. Describe a time when you used your swimming skills or behaviours to your benefit in school? Swimming laps isn't always the most exciting activity but I always feel great when I'm done with all my laps. I think it can be the same for school, some projects are not as interesting, but you still have to get your work done and it feels great when I get a good grade.

The Arbutus Club Swim Team (Manta Sting Rays)
Why do you choose to take part in swimming and to be a member of the Swim Team? I joined the swim team to stay fit and build my endurance. It helps me clear my mind, rid my stress and be ready for the next school day. As well, my dad and older brother were on The Arbutus Club Swim Team back in the day. Currently, my sister and I are on the swim team. How does the Swim Team and swimming activities benefit your school's academic success? After the Swim Team, I can focus and study longer. Swimming has taught me that even though a skill or school subject matter is difficult, with determination and hard work, I have the confidence that I can learn and master the subject. I have come a long way from crying during my swim lessons when I was 5 years old to being able to swim butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke, and freestyle.

He has coached more than 25 Olympians in swimming, open water, and triathlon events.

Describe a time when you used your swimming skills or behaviours to your benefit in school I am in the Prince of Wales TREK outdoor education program, and we go on many field days. Some of these events involve being a strong swimmer. An example of when I used my swimming skills was when I went canoeing with my class. We had to practice capsizing and getting back into the canoe. If I were not on The Arbutus Club Swim Team, I would not have had the confidence to purposely capsize a boat and flip it right side while treading water. ♦

ZAMBONI TIME The Club has purchased a brand new, electric Zamboni ice resurfacer making the switch away from the propane fueled Olympia OLYMPIA TO ZAMBONI The Club has eliminated the health and safety issues associated with storing, dispensing and moving the gas and propane tanks. We also eliminated the exhaust from burning propane and we no longer burn fossil fuel. We don’t have to have a large exhaust and intake system for the rink which will help with humidity issues. The new electric Zamboni will give us 75% fuel savings over propane. As well we will have a 30% reduction in maintenance costs. The Climate Action Reserve Fund provided some funds to support the project, and we also received a rebate from the CleanBC Go Electric Specialty Use Vehicle Incentive (SUVI). A reduction of approximately 140 tonnes of Greenhouse Gases (GhGs) is expected over the lifetime of the equipment. We now have the Zamboni 440 model with Lithium Battery Power. The lithium option is new technology and was offered on the 2020 models . We have ordered the Zamboni 552 Electric this year for the main rink use.

GET IN GEAR WITH FITPASS After setbacks due to pandemic restrictions, Group Fitness is swinging back into action with FitPass classes for all experience levels
G
roup Fitness has endured a rollercoaster ride since the beginning of the pandemic. With Provincial Health Orders that put limits on exercise classes and fitness centres, our group activities have experienced a level of inconsistency.
However, we're hoping we're back together for the long term and look forward to more participation in the FitPass. Covering all aspects of fitness from strength, cardio, cycling, yoga and aquafit, the FitPass is the perfect way to bring some regularity to your workouts. The Group Fitness and Recreation Services team has missed all of our fantastic members in the Arbutus Studios and can’t wait to see you in class. This spring we’ve spiced things up a bit with some brand new offerings throughout the week. ♦

FITNESS FOR TEENS Generating positive routines and engaging in healthy activities during adolescence is key for setting our teens up for adulthood This class was designed for the novice teen joining the world of health & fitness. It’s a program that builds on the Youth Orientation to empower teens to feel comfortable and confident in the Fitness Centre. During the four weeks we discuss topics such as nutrition, safety and program design. The teen leaves the program with a personalized, tailor-fit program.
the younger generations start healthy habits, so that when faced with challenges of adulthood, they can have a positive perspective on stress management. ♦
My son and nephew really enjoyed the session. It surpassed our expectations. They would love to do a part two if it’s ever offered. -
tracey , mother and member
This program is important because of the gap between finishing the Youth Orientation and the confidence needed to navigate the various equipment the Club has to offer. There are many intricacies of weight lifting that can be taught before poor habits set in. We wanted to offer a space for questions that perhaps the teens aren’t comfortable asking a trainer or other person in the Fitness Centre. The Fitness Centre can be intimidating, but doesn’t have to be! Ultimately, our trainers have a strong desire to help
The next Teen Training session begins on Tuesday, April 5, running from 3:30-4:15pm. For more information contact Daniela Tempesta, Fitness Centre Coordinator, at dtempesta@arbutusclub.com.

HITTING THE TRAILS With warmer weather just around the corner, the Personal Training and Fitness Centre teams give trail tips and name their favourite hikes
O
ne of the greatest joys of living in beautiful British Columbia is our access to the great outdoors – in particular hiking up the local trails and seeing the natural splendour of our province from a mountain peak. It's the perfect payoff for a sometimes gruelling climb to the top. In anticipation of hitting the trails, our Personal Trainers and Fitness Centre staff have put together their favourite hikes close to Vancouver ranging from easy to difficult. Whether you want a casual walk down the Whistler Train Wreck Trail or a more strenuous climb on the Panorama Ridge Trail in Garibaldi Provincial Park, your next hiking trip awaits. Ensuring that you are ready for your trip, our trainers have put together advice that may help make your next hiking experience a success.

DIFFICULTY Difficult
DIFFICULTY Difficult. It is all uphill and then all down hill
WHERE Grouse Mountain parking lot (entrance next to Grouse Grind start) DOG FRIENDLY No WHY I LIKE THIS TRAIL This portion of the BCMC trail runs parallel to the Grouse Grind and while it’s not as steep it’s longer (average 1.5 hours) and more scenic. The Grouse Grind is often very busy, and you are not permitted to hike back down, so the BCMC is a less busy alternative and allows you the option to hike down and turn the hike into a 6km loop. This hike is an easily accessible trail from Vancouver, providing a great workout with a beautiful view at the top.
WHERE Located at the top of skyline drive in North Vancouver DOG FRIENDLY Yes WHY I LIKE THIS TRAIL I like this trail because it’s usually very quiet and straight up. You end up at the bottom of the screaming eagle chair lift on Grouse Mountain. It’s a cool trail because it’s the old chair lift route to Grouse. You can still see cabins and old chair lift cables. There are also remnants of an old jet plane that crashed. I usually do it carrying a rock that I find at the bottom for extra spice.

Cypress Falls trail
WHY I LIKE IT Cypress Falls is the perfect hike for this time of year when other trails at higher elevations are buried under snow. It has convenient parking at the head of the trail and offers statuesque trees in a dense forest full of old cedars and douglas firs. My favourite part of this hike is the cascading waterfalls and intermittent landings where you can capture picturesque moments of nature's majesty.

Pickleball
WHY CHOOSE PICKLEBALL? Work on your balance, agility, reflexes and your hand-eye coordination without excessive strain on your body
5 Reasons Why We Love It! 1
pickleball is easy to play
The ease of entry into the sport is truly one of the most enticing aspects of the game. Within 30 minutes, most novices can engage in exciting volleys back and forth over the net. The court dimensions are less than half that of a tennis court, which means you don’t have to be precise in your serves or returns to get the ball where it needs to be.
2
pickleball is a social sport
Whether you’re on the court with family, friends or making new friends, pickleball is an extremely social sport.
3
pickleball is a fun game for all ages
From children, who have just enough strength to swing a paddle, to seniors - people of all ages take up pickleball. This is the motivation to play. Don’t be surprised if you see 15-year-olds on opposite sides of the net with members in their 70s.
48
The Bark s p r i n g 2022
4
playing pickleball is healthy
Many play pickleball to improve or maintain their health. Research shows pickleball benefits mental and physical health. A Japanese study found that after studying more than 150 older adults playing pickleball, they experienced lower levels of sadness, which is in part due to the positive aspects of socializing.
5
pickleball is growing fast and filled with opportunity
No longer do people refer to pickleball as “up and coming,” because it has arrived and is only growing in popularity. The more the sport grows, the more opportunities for people of all ages will have to enjoy the social aspect of the game, along with the health benefits that come with it.
Food & Beverage Pickleball
WE LOVE THE GAME Some Arbutus Club members embrace the game of pickleball and a few of them explain exactly why it is the game of choice
Praveen Varshney •
It is easy to learn, you see improvement quickly, it is fast and fun.
•
It is very inclusive (all ages and range of athleticism can play together).
•
Borrowed from the Ted Lasso Show, “Peekleball is Life”.
•
The main reason I started, because it is a fun sport that I can play with my wife Anjua.
•
Top tip for improving: develop a third drop shot.
Marg Kalaski •
Pickleball has grown significantly because people are looking for a game that requires little equipment, can be played inside and outside, is fun, social and keeps us moving.
•
I love pickleball because of the great people, lots of laughs and beats doing exercises alone on my living room floor.
•
Top tip: move up to the net quickly, keep my racquet up, and watch for that third shot. It is usually a zinger.
Michele Watters •
Pickleball at the Club grew significantly throughout COVID, it was one of the activities we could do to keep our sanity. The growth throughout the community has been extensive, it has so much appeal to so many. Easy to learn, any age group can play, great exercise, so much fun and doesn’t cost a lot.
•
I love pickleball for many reasons, it is competitive, fast paced and filled with fun and so much laughter. It is also very social; I have met so many new members on the courts. It has become a passion.
•
Top tip: learn the short soft game, but I have to say we love to slam that ball!
arbutusclub.com
49
Pickleball Jennifer Chan •
Pickleball is a lot of fun!
•
I took my first set of lessons last spring and started to play doubles in a group last fall.
•
It’s a social game.
•
When we play with friends who are not competitive, we laugh and we have so much fun.
•
Playing pickleball is a great way to stay fit.
Shelagh Weatherill •
It has been a wonderful opportunity to meet people.
•
People are supportive, encouraging, and friendly.
•
You can become competent quite quickly if you have decent eye/hand coordination and agility.
•
There is always laughter on and off the court which is a great stress reducer, and a workout.
•
Tennis elbow surgeries preclude me from ever playing tennis again, but pickleball has a light racquet and ball, so I can play.
•
Top tip: keep your racquet up and ready.

SQUASH CHAMPIONSHIPS The competition was fierce, but the smiles were all around at the annual Arbutus Squash Club Championships
T
he 2021 Arbutus Squash Club Championships were a blast this year. Due to the ongoing pandemic, the event was much smaller than in previous years. However, the size of the tournament didn't put a damper on the spirit and gameplay. There were some excellent matchups. Luke Elliot snatched the Men's A Club Champion crown with
a nail biting final that went right to the 5th game. Another close game saw Garo Deyrmenjian win the Men’s B category. Rounding out the winners was Rob Heppenstall fighting his way to capture the Men's C trophy. Special thanks to member, Ryan Cook who meticulously carved beautiful, wooden trophies for the winners.

MEET YOUR MATCH With outdoor court weather just around the corner, it's the perfect time to get into the swing of The Arbutus Club's Tennis program
T
ennis programs at the Club provide opportunities for a wide range of levels and interests. Whether you have never played before or are an avid tennis enthusiast, there is something for you. We currently offer programs for juniors 3-18 years old and for adults of all levels. The U8 and U10 programs for players 5-10 years old are particularly popular instilling the love of the sport at a young age. Historically, tennis has been viewed as a sport that is difficult to learn and less accessible to the masses. This has all changed with modern progressive teaching methods that are implemented in both our junior and adult programming which helps adults and kids of all ages enjoy the sport of a lifetime right from the start.

I recently started playing tennis and have enjoyed becoming part of the tennis community. The classes and programs are fantastic, with excellent coaches who keep us learning and growing as players, but also keep it fun! Tennis is a sport that anyone can pick up and is a terrific way to socialize at the Club. -

Valentine's LoveAll Tennis Classic It all begins with love and there were plenty of sweethearts on the courts for The Arbutus Club Love–All Valentine's Tennis Classic on Saturday, February 12.
Our Senior Men's Morning Tennis Group had a luncheon on December 14 with 47 attendees, including Club Tennis Pros, Craig Mercer, and Pat Macken. The presentations concluded with David Muller receiving the Most Gentlemanly Player award for 2021. Members of the Group—typically aged 55 years and up—play mainly doubles at 7:30 am each weekday. Anyone interested in joining this Group should contact Eric Watt at ewatt@hotmail.ca.
16 couples enjoyed a fun and social team competition format with the Heartlobs taking home the title and were rewarded with champagne glasses and bubbly along with chocolate truffles to enjoy. Although many of our teams sported creative outfits full of passion and heart, our best dressed team was the brightly adorned Kira Quovadis and John Zurowski who won a dinner for two at The Fireside.
