THE PRESIDENT’S LETTER
Dear Members, As I noted at the Club AGM, I want to extend my appreciation to the membership for the opportunity to serve as your Club President. It is truly an honour and I'm looking forward to a busy year. I also want to thank our Immediate Past President, Alan Bailey, for his outstanding contribution and leadership over the past eight years. Alan and I worked very closely last year, with the support of the Executive, to establish continuity in leadership and strategic planning. I'm forever grateful for Alan's guidance and friendship. Those that know me can attest to just how much the Club means to me. Although I didn't become a member until adulthood, the Club helped shape my life, starting with my first visit in my early teens as a guest, thanks to my friend Mike and the Randall family. I would be pleased to share my funny yet inspiring story when you see me around the Club. The Club plays a unique role in our members' lives, young and old alike. Besides our incredible facilities and programs, our fantastic community of members, management, and staff continues to fuel my gratitude. Pam Greenslade, our Director of Skating, exemplifies this notion. Pam, hired by our founder, Billie Mitchell, in 1974, is set to retire this summer after 48 years of service. On page 19 we highlight her exceptional dedication to the Club, the skating program, and the tremendous impact she's had on so many of our families. As I reflect on the last two years and the Club's resiliency in the face of ever-changing protocols and restrictions, I must acknowledge the tremendous efforts of the Board and management, plus the cooperation and understanding of our members. It was challenging to say the least, but if we learned anything, being respectful and patient with one another is paramount in building a strong Club culture and supportive community. I would encourage you to continue this as a guiding principle for your conduct at the Club. This year, we've formed two new Adhoc Committees to tackle some of the more significant issues facing our Club's future. With the assistance and expertise of our Vice President, Soren

Rasmussen, we have compiled a solid and experienced group of members to carry out preliminary long-range strategic planning discussions regarding the potential redevelopment of our aging tennis building and surrounding area. A special Membership Committee is evaluating current and future occupancy issues, demand for new membership, and possible solutions to enhance the Club's capital funding model to ensure sufficient funds for future capital and long-range plans. Our House Committees also have their work cut out for them, each tasked with several special mandates in addition to their regular responsibilities. On a lighter note, this summer will mark the return of some of our favourite events, starting with the Canada Day Pancake Breakfast, where the directors will join me in showcasing our considerable pancake-flipping skills. There are also several new and exciting events in the works. We feature Rose Colored Glasses on Thursday nights on the Rooftop in July. In August, Bright Lights Big Volleys during the US Open. Be sure to keep an eye out for more details. I hope everyone has a great summer and I look forward to seeing you around the Club. Sincerely,
Jeff Thorsteinson Club President president@arbutusclub.com

Adi Jaya Mahendra duty manager (mod)
You may have noticed a new face at the MOD Desk. Our new Duty Manager Adi Jaya Mahendra is happily tending to membership needs, so don't be afraid to introduce yourself when he's walking the halls or greeting you as you walk through the Club Reception doors. Adi has extensive experience working in the hospitality and tourism industry, having worked in multiple hotels and resorts, both abroad in Bali, Indonesia and locally in Vancouver. Currently working towards his Bachelor’s Degree in Hospitality Management, Adi looks to expand his knowledge and acumen of the industry. Hailing from Nusa Penida, a diving magnet and beach-laced island off the south east coast of Bali, Adi is sure to have plenty of stories to share about literal paradise. According to Adi, the best things to do in Nusa Penida are diving, snorkeling, water sports, sightseeing, and mingling with locals during community activities. Stop by, say hello, and we're sure you'll walk away with an idea about your next vacation destination.
Alex Karanis
office administrator Our administration area also has a new team member helping around the office. Alex Karanis joined the team as our new Office Administrator. Although Alex will support our entire Administration team, he will primarily work with Membership and Accounting. Alex first joined The Arbutus Club as a Lifeguard in June of 2021, so he is relatively familiar with the Club and our members. With a background in Business Administration and Film Production, he knows his way around the office and is great at thinking on his feet. Originally from Markham, Ontario, Alex also worked at the Granite Club in Toronto for 4 years and is very familiar with the private members club industry. He always brings a tremendous amount of enthusiasm and energy to his work, and we trust that he will be a valuable addition to our team. As a former Film Production student, Alex is a huge movie buff and appreciates creative cinematography – with his favorite movie of all time being The Godfather.

Josephine Perea janitor
Always exuding a warm demenour and ensuring that the Club is always sparkling, Josephine Perea is an incredibly hardworking and vital member of our team. Earlier this year she transitioned into a full-time position and we're overjoyed that we get to see Josephine even more. Hired in 2010, this year marks a very special milestone for Jospehine as she celebrates her 12-year work anniversary. She is an incredible example of devotion, kindness, and how our staff is part of a supportive community. Outside of the Club, Josephine enjoys spending time in the kitchen cooking up a diverse range of dishes. Pairing well with a good dinner, Jospehine also gets her adrenaline pumping by watching action movies. Be sure to congratulate Josephine on her new position, her work anniversary...or to simply talk shop about the latest silver screen releases.

building services supervisor There's a new Mr. Fix-It in town and we're thrilled to have the help. Join us in welcoming our new Building Services Supervisor, Erico Manuel, to The Arbutus Club Maintenance team. No stranger to construction and hospitality, Erico previously worked at the Hilton Hotel for over 15 years. The role helped him develop expertise in the industry, bringing relevant experience and enthusiasm to our team. Fluent in both English and Tagalog, Erico is ready to jump in and get to work. We are very excited for him to take on a supervisory role and support our Maintenance and Operations team. When Erico is not at work, he loves spending time with his family. A true family man, Erico enjoys helping his kids with schoolwork, spending time with them outdoors, and being an all-around good father. ♦

GLIDING INTO RETIREMENT After 48 years of sharing her expertise on the ice, Figure Skating Director Pam Greenslade takes a triple axel into a new chapter
W
hen Skating Director Pam Greenslade was hired as a Club Pro in 1974, she likely wasn't aware of the incredible impact she would have on the skating program. Now, 48 years later, skating is one of our leading programs and it flourished due to the grit, determination, hard work, and love poured into it by Pam. "The Club has been my second home and second family (although my own family feels it may be reversed as to the order) for 48 years," says Pam in jest. "I have been teaching at the Club in many cases before many [of our members] were born. From my first days at the Club, it has been all about 'Family'", she continues. This tight knit tradition was no doubt continued by Pam and reflected in all of the close relationships she has fostered in her role. From being a mentor to a role

model, Pam has always nutured the best out of her coaches and pupils. "Everybody loves Pam," says her first student at the Club, Barb Irving Aidelbaum. "She is always so lively, genuine, and is a life-long coach to all. The life lessons that she mixes in her coaching
have always been how I’ve conducted myself on and off the ice," reflects Aidelbaum. Her passion and commitment is not lost on our CEO, Brent Elkington. "We have such dedicated long term employees, Pam being the pioneer," he says earnestly. "Pam should hold her head high and take a bow for what she has done for figure skating and The Arbutus Club. It's truly remarkable." Of course, Pam only looks back on her career with humility and bearing a sweet message to her skaters, "To all my skaters past and present who have been my family. I am so proud of your accomplishments and of the wonderful people you have become", she says with affection. "It has been a privilege and honour to share my passion with so many families." ♦

CLUB ARCHIVES THE ARBUTUS CLUB
With the retirement of Skating Director Pam Greenslade we take a look back at the program that she helped lovingly shape and meticulously grow. From the modest beginnings in the 1960s to now, skating has been a pivotal part of the sense of community at The Arbutus Club.
O
ur skating program has a storied history that extends back to the Club's inception. Our founding members sought to provide more ice time for skaters and support for the Club was generated due to the high demand for ice time during the late 1950s and early part of the 1960s. With that in mind, it can be said that skating was the foundation upon which the Club was born. In an effort to honour our roots, we look back at the journey the program has taken over the years – many which include departing Skating Director, Pam Greenslade.

A gymnast at The Arbutus Club since she was 4 years old, Mara Baxendale reflects on how the program gave her strength
A
member since she was only an infant, Mara Baxendale has truly grown up at The Arbutus Club. With two generations of Baxendales preceeding her, Mara's family illustrates the Club's rich history of providing a home away from home for our families and creating a strong community. Walking across the balance beam since she was only 4 years old, Mara has taken part in the gymnastics program for nearly her entire life. With an incredible amount of experience, Mara's participation has served her well and she has been helping other gymnasts as a Junior Coach with the program for the past 3 years. It's a milestone year for Mara. This year she graduates high school and will be soon be vaulting across the country to study Environment, Sustainability, and Society at Dalhousie University in Nova Scotia. However, before she lands in Halifax, Mara shares how the Club has played a special role in her upbringing and the valuable skills that the gymnastics program taught her.
When did you begin participating in gymnastics? Mara: Growing up I tried many different sports, although not all at the Club. As the years went on, I stuck with gymnastics and so did my sister. The Club has introduced me to so many people I would’ve otherwise never met and brought me closer with people that make me happy. I truly wouldn’t be the person I am today without gymnastics at the Club. I started gymnastics when I was 4 because my best friend did it at the time, so that made me want to try it – the rest is history.
How has gymnastics influenced your life outside of the sport? M: I’ve learned many skills, but I think the most important is being mentally strong when you become physically weak and tired. It is in this special place of pain and discomfort that help you grow character – you learn more about your mental fortitude in this specific time than you can ever imagine. This will not only make you a more confident human, but you will learn to relax even under the most intense situations.

Meet the Athlete
What is your favourite part of participating in gymnastics at The Arbutus Club?
In your opinion, what is the key to perseverance in sports and fitness?
M: Participating in the gymnastics program at the Club has allowed me to meet some amazing people that I continue to talk to today and have created some pretty great memories along the way.
M: Knowing that you’re not alone. Your coaches and teammates want you to succeed as much as you want yourself to succeed. People are there to help you and want you to achieve your goals as much as you want to achieve them.
What aspect of Gymnastics has inspired you to stay committed throughout these past few 'unprecedented' years?
Are there any teammates, partners, opponents, coaches, staff or trainers at The Arbutus Club that have positively enhanced your gymnastics experience? How so?
M: You need mental toughness to do gymnastics. Through these past years I’ve taken that and transferred it to the real world. Although everything has been tough you can push past anything your mind believes.
What skill(s) have you mastered in Gymnastics that assist you in other areas of your daily life? M: Patience. I’ve learned that good things come to those who wait. Not everything comes right away and sometimes you need to give it time for things to start to happen. Having patience to deal with problems in the real world can go a long way.
M: Through the years I’ve made many friendships through the sport, but 2 teammates in particular stand out; Jen and Alexandra. We trained together for many years and have been by each other’s side for all the ups and downs. As well as my coach Gord, who always believed in me even when I didn’t believe in myself. ♦

vengers assemble! The Club's annual Spring Carnival was action packed with a plethora of good natured, crime fighting superheroes – and not all of them wore capes. With exciting games and visits from some top heroes, it was a marvelously good time for all of our families.

Annual Spring Carnival The Recreation Services team was so excited to be able to host our much-loved Spring Carnival. We loved seeing so many members dressed up in costumes and everyone having a ‘marvel-ous’ time. Our super special guests Spiderman, Black Widow, Captain America, and Supergirl told us that their superhero training sessions with our members were the best they’ve ever seen. They were thrilled to meet so many of the future superheroes we have here at the Club.
The event was fantastic! It was so wonderful to be able to get together with other members at such an amazing event after so many years As always, our Food and Beverage team knocked it out of the park with lots of yummy Marvel-themed treats. One member even commented that their children “are now addicted to mac & cheese nuggets” (we are too!). The Dr. Strange Mini Donuts were also a huge hit, providing a muchneeded sugar rush to shoot some foam-tipped arrows and hide behind a variety of obstacles in a high-intensity game of Archery Tag®. In addition to Archery Tag®, we had several bouncy castles for families to try out, including a popular Wipe Out bouncer with

That one was a great stress reliever for our adult members too! Thanks to our photographer, Kayla Beiler, for these wonderful pictures of the event. And a SUPER big thank you to everyone who came to our Marvelous Spring Carnival, and we hope you had as awesome of a time as we did! ♦

Hoedown Throwdown
For most of us, the closest we get to a cowboy experience is a visit to the multiplex to see City Slickers or Brokeback Mountain. Even Arbutus Club members don’t belong to a traditional “country” club, as we're among the finest city clubs in the land, bar none. That all changed, however, for one magic night in late May, as the Club was transformed into a saloon, dude ranch and stampede party for a ride into the sunset that won’t soon be forgotten. In the afterglow of last fall’s Grapes and Hops success, the only request that came our way was the overwhelming desire of the swank and fine to have somewhere to dance. Since Dr. Bonnie
We needed an outlet for people to be together again, have some fun, and boogie. A country barn dance seemed like a great way to accomplish that goal. loosened the rules in the spring and dancing was permitted again, we started to plan a new spring event that we hoped would grow into a new tradition – the Grapes and Hops of the spring, if you will. From these fledgling first steps in new boots, the “Hoedown Throwdown” was born. “Every person that talked to me after our last big event in the fall expressed this huge, overwhelming desire to dance and let loose all of their pent-up energy and frustration” related Kim McBurney, the Catering Manager at the Club.
38
The Bark s u m m e r 2022
The idea was to have a small town feel, but for big city folk. The team at the Club started to plan the event using the North Gym, squash court area and the loading bay parking lot off Arbutus Street. The idea was to have a small town feel for big city folk, where everyone would feel comfortable yet different for one night. “I come from a small town in the Kootenays,” explained Don Robinson, Director of Food and Beverage, “and we would have a broomball dance in the summer at the Complex. Super high energy bands, low brow food, cheap beer, everyone would get dressed up, it was super fun. That was what we were after.” Everyone who came that night was greeted by our own Flat Stanley “Burt” Reynolds at the Club Reception, given a hi y’all at the step and repeat before entering into the dance hall portion of the experience. DJ Ryhno played during dinner as Chef Michael’s team flashed their best Nashville chops, playing on themes of the South with understated flair and class. Ribs, chicken, and even a Southern poutine brought the True North and South together without a rebel flag in sight. As we prepped for the band to hit the stage, guys and gals played the Midway games in the squash court area. Classic claw machine wins provided free six packs, t-shirts, and even a night at The Fireside.
A short leap over a hay bale and you could ride the mechanical bull or try to rope a dogie on the horse and lasso ride. Those who ventured further down the valley and through the dale found themselves outside where they could take IG-worthy photos with live horses and classic vehicles, including a ’58 Chevy and a ’75 Cadillac. All in a ten-gallon Stetson if you brought one, yee hah indeed. The night’s main attraction, the band Appaloosa, hit the stage at nine and did not disappoint. From the opening strains of Shania’s “Man, I Feel Like a Woman” that instantly packed the dance floor until a countrified version of “Sweet Caroline” near last call, Appaloosa captured the spirit of the event perfectly and rocked the house down. As the event drew its own sunset, the night proved that even the good, the bad, and the pretty have friends in low places. ♦

The HEART of
DANCE We rarely think about all the work and energy that goes into a dance production such as Stars of Tomorrow, presented by The Arbutus Academy of Dance on Sunday May 1, 2022 at the Michael J Fox Theatre. Presenting a show of this quality requires collaborative effort with many people in a variety of roles and responsibilities. Planning and organizing a dance performance can truly be overwhelming and exhausting. However, under the expert guidance of the Director of Dance, Marlene Hershfield, her team of dance instructors make it look easy. In order to continue supporting amazing dance performances the Club's Dance department conducts well thought-out planning, collaboration, conversations, while implementing careful timing and scheduling of lessons and rehearsals. After changing into their gorgeous costumes, the dancers use the short amount of time before the show to run through the choreography, nailing down their spacing and rehearsing under the stage lights. In those final moments right before the curtain goes up and the dancers glide across the stage, each performer and dance teacher takes a deep breath – knowing all of the hard work that went into being able to share the stage once again.

Watching the Stars of Tomorrow is an exhilarating experience for the audience and an incredibly rewarding opportunity for the dancers and their teachers who have been choreographing, rehearsing routines and moving in dance for countless hours

any of The Arbutus Academy of Dance graduating students started when they were just toddlers at 3 or 4 years old. Members of the dance community have had the privilege to watch these students grow and succeed within the dance program. The Stars of Tomorrow show on Sunday, May 1 was the final performance for five incredible young dancers who are graduating from the program. These dancers seem to glide effortlessly but learning how to dance like they do is both physically and mentally demanding. So, what keeps the Club's many dancers going? "Definitely having patience and knowing there is a goal. But, what really

keeps me going is my love for dance," Sofia Cicci explains. Marlene Hershfield recognizes a love of learning, integrity and tenacity in her graduating students that allows them to achieve their goals, and reach great heights within the dance program.
Dance
Dance teachers can't help but embrace these kind and compassionate students who work hard and diligently, by staying involved, being trustworthy, and committed individuals, while helping to motivate others. Graduating dance students Shoshana Pollock, Sofia Cicci, Georgia Verchere-Gopaulsingh, Celia Gustafson, and Sofia Wind all possess these incredible characteristics and qualities.
There is no better feeling than seeing improvements in a skill you have been continuously working on, particularly one you find such enjoyment in. -
sofia wind , graduating dancer
When asked what their favourite part of participating in the dance program has been, one of the graduating students explains that The Arbutus Academy of Dance is an accepting and kind environment – one that supports and encourages personal growth. Sofia Wind explains that it was this level of support that encouraged her to volunteer as a dance assistant leading eventually to her becoming a substitute teacher.

Dance
The dance program at the Club offers many different styles of dance including a strong Ballet program, Hip Hop, Tap, Musical Theatre, Jazz, Acro, and Contemporary dance. All students are welcome. The talent and variety presented during the Stars of Tomorrow performance was fabulous. Covering such an array of different genres of dance, the performance was a breathtaking and uplifting afternoon of amazing choreography and wonderful dancing. The audience was guided seamlessly through the show like an adventure, bringing a story to each dance and leaving the audience wanting more. It was also clear to see how much every student who took part in the show was enjoying it. As one graduating student described, "the feeling of the stage lights, with the beautiful costumes, and the audience attention makes all the hard work worth it."
I love performing. The second I step on stage I feel something so special that cannot be replicated. -
shoshana pollock , graduating dancer
The dance program has a reputation for being a supportive environment "where everybody wants to do what's best for you," assures graduate student Shoshana Pollock. "I would not be who I am today without the love and support from my friends and teachers." The dance teachers are known for their level of care and ability to listen to what each dancer needs. Graduate student Sofia Wind admits that the dance program has inspired her to stay committed.
Dance has been a constant source of joy for me and a place I always feel drawn back to because of the wonderful community. -

Dance
Dance is a passion and The Arbutus Academy of Dance students know that believing in yourself, having patience, and understanding that progress takes time is the correct approach. They also know that you have to put in a lot of hard work in order to see results.
I am so thankful to my amazing teachers for supporting me throughout my 14 years of dance, helping me grow as a dancer and as a person. -
shoshana pollock , graduating dancer
Marlene Hershfield chooses to work with dance teachers who share her vision for the program and help to make the dance department a positive environment for growth. She looks for a high standard of excellence from her teachers and is able to recognize it in their work and in their ethics effecting how they make decisions and lead. As the Director of Dance, Marlene looks for individuals who have had a lot of experience dancing and teaching, those with passion and commitment, with the ability to encourage these qualities in their students.
Dance at The Arbutus Club is definitely more than just dance. The community is like a family. You are supported and helped in all aspects. -
sofia cicci , graduating dancer
Ms Marlene trusts her instincts and knows when someone is a good fit. An uplifting style, an energetic individual, someone who chooses the music carefully promoting a fun, safe and happy environment are winning qualities for a dance teacher at the Club. A good dance teacher will quickly win their students over, inspiring and fostering a pure love for the art form. After all, it's this love that is at the heart of dance.

SUMMER ACTIVITIES
Running Running is an amazing way to stay active and soak up the beautiful Vancouver summer weather. The most common type of running injury is a repetitive use injury. This means we have done too much too quickly that our body cannot tolerate the load. To prevent injuries progress slowly with your frequency, distance, pace, and time spent running. Therunningclinic.com has some great resources as well as training programs to follow.
Gardening
Tennis Another great way to be active, competitive, and social. Being such a fast-paced sport, tennis does come with its own risks. Tennis elbow, ankle, and shoulder injuries are the most common. Stretching and strengthening on both sides of your body is very important as racket sports are very lopsided. If you are new to the sport or just starting up after winter, go slowly and address areas of discomfort quickly to avoid prolonged injury. These rules can also be applied to those enjoying pickleball.
Golf
Gardening is a fun way to be outside and create something beautiful for you to enjoy. This activity does have some associated injury risks, the most common being low back and upper body strains.
Vancouver and area have so many beautiful courses to choose from it is easy to go too hard, too fast. The most common way we can injure ourselves golfing is a repetitive use injury, which can occur almost anywhere in the body.
The best way to prevent this is to go slowly and spread out your tasks with breaks in between. Often, we do not do much in the garden during the winter and then a spike in activity when it becomes spring. Heavy lifting of dirt, pulling weeds, raking, and bending over for several hours can cause issues if we have not been used to it.
If you don’t engage in regular activity over winter, try starting out hitting half a bucket at the driving range then progress to a full bucket, then 9 holes, then 18. The same goes for gradually walking further distances and time to get ready for chasing the ball around the course. Working on some corrective exercises at home or at the gym is also helpful as golf is an uneven activity for the body. ♦ arbutusclub.com

Pickleball
OUTDOOR PICKLEBALL TIPS & TRICKS
60
Weather Conditions
The Ball
The Surface
The elements of weather and climate (especially wind) are an immense factors when playing pickleball outdoors. Be aware of the direction and speed of the wind in order to be better equipped to deal with it. When playing against the wind you will have to hit the “3rd shot drop” more firmly to ensure the ball gets up and over the net. The opposite is true when playing with the wind at your back. Be sure to check the weather forecast prior to playing and ensure that you are able to adjust your game accordingly.
There are slight but important differences between indoor and outdoor pickleballs. Outdoor balls are harder and heavier than indoor balls making them more difficult to control. Because the holes off the ball are smaller, an outdoor ball will travel more quickly through the air leaving you with less time to react when in the Non Volley Zone. As you spend more time playing outdoors, the more comfortable you will become with the speed and feel of the ball bouncing off of your paddle. The indoor ball might start looking slow!
The outdoor ball will bounce and react differently depending on the surface of the court you are playing on. The outdoor pickleball surface (same as tennis) is harder and more rough or gritty than an indoor court. This means that the ball will be more reactive to different spins when bouncing off the surface. The best way to deal with an opponent who consistently puts spin on the ball is to do your best to volley their incoming shot. Do your utmost to read whether there is any slice or topspin on their shot to give yourself the best chance of making your volley successful. ♦

Best for dry, mature and sensitive skin, this lavender bead wax is infused with essential oils to help protect the skin from irritation and to protect freshly open hair follicles from bacteria. Formulated for body or face, fine to normal hair, this wax is extra flexible making it appropriate for hair removal anywhere regardless of the hair coarseness or length, with the ability to pick up even the finest hairs. Once the Spa's esthetician melts the hard wax down, she will spread it on to your skin easily. After what will seem like a very short wait-time, the removal of the wax leaves skin feeling incredibly soft. And the best part is, it doesn't hurt! Hypoallergenic and vegan, needing only a low temperature for melting, DermwaxTM Elite is also fragrance free. Requiring only a very thin application and a brief resting period, when it's time to remove the wax, it feels like nothing more than removing an adhesive bandage with minimal effort required. No tears, no redness, just smooth, clear and clean skin. arbutusclub.com
