PVR INOX's Ajay Bijli Opens International Day at CinemaCon 2023
2022 alone. And also, as is widely known, we’ve got the largest number of millennials and Gen Z on the planet. 65% of Indians are under the age of 35. And of course, we are a movie crazy nation.
Ajay Bijli becomes the First Indian Film Industry delegate to be invited to deliver the Keynote address in CinemaCon’s 11 year’s history. For someone who created the multiplex industry in India 25 years back, Ajay Bijli is strengthening and creating scale to the film exhibition industry. Through his critical experience of mobilizing content producers, mall developers, studios and cinema technology makers, Ajay has been able to create a conduit between consumers and film industry on one hand and the other with the retail industry and real estate development.
In his own words, “I understand this is the first time an Indian exhibitor has been invited, so I’m truly humbled and honoured. In these 15 minutes, I would like to cover as much as I can on the global trends, my own two big suggestions on what collectively needs to be done to resuscitate the exhibition sector and also to introduce India and the craziness of the Indian movie landscape. Let me start with India first. We are the world’s largest democracy with a population of 1.4 billion people. We are the fifth largest economy at USD 3.5 trillion and growing at a rapid pace of over 6%. The Indian consumer is spending a lot across USD 300 billion in the last quarter of
Now that I’ve given you the spicy flavour of India, let me just talk about the global exhibition as it stands today. So far, the trend has been very promising. For example, the number of new releases already have increased by 36% 89 to 121. And the number of wide releases have increased by 12% from 16 to 18 in the first quarter since last year. And over the years in spite of all the technologies and out of the home entertainment options, cinema has always grown. Pre - COVID global box office had exceeded USD 40 billion for three consecutive years. While we’re nowhere near the pre COVID levels, we are heading in the right direction, with 81% year on year increase in global box office in 2021 and a 22% year on year increase in 2022. The start of the current year has also been very promising. We recorded the best first quarter since 2019. And ended up with USD 8 billion global box office within the first three months but of course a lot needs to be further done. he said.
We can attribute this to many factors. For example, premium experiences are back and IMAX having the best first quarter in its history. The big is getting bigger, big blockbusters are continuing to dominate with films like ‘Avatar 2’, ‘Top Gun Maverick’ and ‘Wakanda Forever’ making global and local marks in the box office. The same thing is reciprocated in our country as well, in fact post covid regional films like ‘RRR’, Hollywood’s ‘Avatar 2’, Bollywood’s ‘Pathaan’ have broken alltime box-office records surpassing what they had even achieved pre-
covid. It just goes to show that once the movie connects with the audiences, there is no upper ceiling to how well it can perform. Blockbusters are working and so are midsized films. Several movies released last year also broke the myth that midsize movies are not performing well post pandemic. The bottom line is, we all have reasons to remain optimistic.
If you will indulge me a little bit I am going to talk a little bit about my own company. We launched PVR cinemas in 1997. Our philosophy has always been to celebrate movies as you know in India moviegoing is a celebration. Our Key pillars have always been Design to begin with. We want to completely transport our audiences from the moment they open our doors to our foyers, to the concession stands to the auditoriums and take them to the world of make believe. I mean movies transport you to another world. And we wanted the world that we’ve created as well is as close to what is unfolding on the screen. We are also offering a range of premium seating solutions with formats including IMAX, 4DX, ICE. All differentiated cinema concepts. India is a very disparate market, and we have consumers at different price points coming to cinemas. So, we’ve tried to provide them with a truly elevated experience, right from a ticket price as low as USD 2 to as high as USD 20.
We are now the fifth largest listed multiplex chain globally attracting around 180 million annual admissions with revenues of USD 700 million annually. We currently operate approximately 1700 screens in 115 cities in India and Sri Lanka and we’re also very proud to have the highest admissions per screen per year of about 1,26,000 customers.
Let me start with the exhibitors first. I think we need to adapt ourselves to the ever-changing landscape and the consumer behaviour. We need to make cinemas more relevant. With all the experimentation behind us, a theatrical window must stay. Windows have existed for decades; studios have created events around IP and made it more valuable. We need to maintain the monetisation journey that’s always been there of content. Increasing window further is not a thought that we should shy away from.
Despite everything I’ve said about the roles that all of us have to play, the most important thing that gives us a lot of hope is this quote by Aristotle that a man is, by nature a social animal. I heard a phrase in one of the previous speeches that if content is king, cinema is the kingdom. But the real king is the customer, and a customer wants to go out. He doesn’t want to be incarcerated at home especially after the pandemic and he will always commit himself to the big experience. Therefore, it’s important for us to remain optimistic and keep our chins up and do all that it takes to get him back to the magic of big screen because we all love to experience to celebrate this togetherness called cinema.”
Galalite Sets New Standard for Environmental Responsibility in Industry
Galalite, the pioneering manufacturer of cinema projection screen surfaces, has been at the forefront of innovation and technology for over six decades. At the beginning of the year, the company has taken a step towards reducing its carbon footprint and improving sustainability by investing in an 'Air and Water Pollution Control' system in their plant.
During the production of Avatar, Galalite's factory operated around the clock to meet the demand. Following the success of the film, they temporarily closed the plant to undergo significant upgrades. For a period of two weeks, the factory was closed while they successfully commissioned and installed a wet scrubber system. A wet scrubber is a mechanical system that removes pollutants from an air stream by bringing it in contact with water. Wet scrubbers are generally the only single air pollution control device to remove particulates and gases/vapours. They are highly efficient at capturing the smallest dust particles and can eliminate more than 99% of airborne particulate matter. Galalite redirects the cleaned air back into the plant to reduce the environmental impact further and make it into a zeroemission plant.
Yusuf Galabhaiwala, Director of Operations at Galalite, says, "We believe in doing our part to create a cleaner, more sustainable world. Although this was a major investment, we didn't hesitate to invest in this system, even if it meant temporarily shutting down our plant although the markets had just bounced back. It was worth it to know that we're doing our best to protect the environment."
Galalite has been committed to using eco-friendly water-based coatings since 2009 and was one of the first companies to adopt such sustainable practices.
Water-based optical coatings are eco-friendly and have low VOC levels and HAP emissions, reducing the concentration of contaminants in the ozone layer.
Galalite has always believed in constantly upgrading its technology and processes, and this new development of installing a scrubber is no exception. Galalite has also slated other upgrades and initiatives that further reinforce its commitment to innovation while being sustainable. The company plans to launch new products in the near future that will enhance and upgrade the moviewatching experience while being environmentally friendly.
Saikat Ali, Production Head at Galalite, added, "Upgrading is constant at Galalite. We are excited about the new products we will soon launch, and we are confident that they will further elevate the movie-watching experience. As always, we will continue to innovate and take a responsible approach toward the environment."
With these initiatives, Galalite hopes to set an example for the industry and inspire others to adopt sustainable practices. Galalite's commitment to sustainability and the environment is commendable, and it is a prime example of how businesses can innovate while keeping the planet in mind. With its cutting-edge technology, innovative products, and eco-friendly approach, Galalite is a true leader in the cinema screen industry.

Lone Bengal Theatre, Receives Good BO
Response for 'Kerala Story'
While theatre owners in other halls have not shown the willingness to show the movie, a cinema hall in Bongaon town in North 24 Parganas district near the India-Bangladesh border is screening the movie since May this year. 'The Kerala Story' movie is being screened in only one theatre in West Bengal but it is evoking a good response from the audience, an official of the Eastern India Motion Picture Association (EIMPA) said on Thursday. The Supreme Court recently set aside the West Bengal government's ban on screening of the controversial movie in the state. The Mamata Banerjee administration, while imposing the ban on May, had cited fears that the movie, if screened in theatres, could fan communal passions. While theatre owners in other halls have not shown the willingness to show the movie, a cinema hall in Bongaon town in North 24 Parganas district near the IndiaBangladesh border is screening the movie since May, with a disclaimer that the 'narratives are based on fictional accounts'.
"Sreema Cinema Hall on Ramnagar Road in Bongaon, around 75 km from Kolkata, is screening the movie but we do not have knowledge whether any other theatre in the state is showing the film," the office-bearer of EIMPA, the apex body of cinema hall owners and distributors of the eastern region, told PTI. After the state government imposed the ban on the film's screening, around 60 halls showing it started allotting its slots to other Bengali, Hindi and English movies and now, barring one, all cite the inability to resume screening, he said.
"We offered them several time slots but they did not show any inclination to screen the film," he said. Satadip Saha, on behalf of the film's distributors SSR Cinema, said, "The movie is being screened in only one theatre despite us assuring the hall owners that they would not face any legal hurdle if they screen the movie after May." Ratan Saha, chairman of the exhibition section of EIMPA, in an earlier letter to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, wrote, "Currently cinema halls are struggling as audiences are not coming to theatres in large numbers. However, 'The Kerala Story' had a successful three-day run giving some relief to the hall owners. So, I request you to make arrangements to facilitate the screening of the film in the state for the interest of cinema." Ratan Saha, who is also a co-owner of Ajanta Cinema in South Calcutta, said, "It is up to the respective hall owner to take the decision (to screen the movie), the EIPMA cannot ask them to. As far as I know, the distributors are ready if any other hall owner shows interest." The movie's director Sudipto Sen, in a press conference in Calcutta on May, had claimed that many hall owners have informed him that they were threatened and asked not to screen the film. He had said that the movie will certainly be released on OTT platforms later but it was "meant for viewing on the large screen".

Prasads:
An Emotion to Millions in Hyderabad
Commenced its journey in the early 2000s, this cinema has been the very first multiplex in Hyderabad to have the 'World's Most Immersive Film Formats'. Today the theatre brings a more upgraded and immersive experience to its patrons. Donning its latest 101.6 ft x 64ft screen, ultimate 3D projection and 53 speakers all designed and powered by Dolby Atmos, it claims the title as 'The Largest Screen in South - Asia'. Movie lovers stepping into screen 6 are sure to be spell-bound with is all new features. TheatreWorld brings to you an exclusive conversation with Akkineni Ramesh Prasad, film producer, chairman and Head of Prasad Studios, Prasads IMAX and L V Prasad Eye Institute sharing a piece of his memory towards his legendary father and the cinema's birth…
An upgraded and more immersive experience awaits movie lovers who step into Screen 6 of Prasads multiplex, Hyderabad. The large screen of the multiplex situated at NTR Marg had gone in for renovation and the auditorium is now equipped with a Strong MDI screen measuring 64 feet in height and 101.6 feet wide, powered by Dolby Atmos, Dual Barco DP4K-60L laser 3D projection and 53 speakers.
In 2003, Prasads was the first multiplex in Hyderabad to have an IMAX projection. In November 2014,
when Christopher Nolan's Interstellar opened in theatres, Prasads was reportedly the only IMAX screen in India where the space drama was watched on 70mm film. A few avid movie buffs from other cities travelled to Hyderabad to view Nolan's film in an immersive format. With time, however, film projection shifted to the digital format and the multiplex stopped screening films in IMAX format. It all started with a man's humble beginnings and his diehard dreams to venture into cinema.
Lakshmi Varaprasada Rao (L V Prasad)
was the man with the burning flame and desire towards cinema.
Would you like to share with us a little about your father, the legendary L V Prasad Rao?
Ramesh Prasad: Ramesh Prasad: Ramesh Prasad: My father, (Lakshmi Varaprasada Rao) started from very humble beginnings and went on to become an actor, film director, producer, and an industrialist. He was the creative mind behind the whole brand. His story goes back to how he moved away from hometown to Bombay with a nothing but just a dream and lots of passion in his
pocket. Although language barriers seemed to be quite a task to overcome, he earned a job at a tailor shop who curated for clothes and costumes for the actors back then as there was a studio right next to it. As he was working there, he came in touch with the world of cinema, he was motivated. He would go into the studio and see how the shoots went on and he was so fascinated by it that he moved his way into all odd jobs right from the gatekeeper for the studio, to the light boy and then finally getting his very first chance to act in a side role for a film. The hardships and struggle he underwent could have mere mortals, but he was simply more than that. He directed, acted in and produced many memorable films, in Hindi, Telegu, Tamil and other Indian languages including Gruha Pravesham, Mana Desam, Shavukkar, Pelli Chesi Choodu, Missamma, Manohara, Sharada, Daadi Maa,
Please tell us a little about the history of Prasads
Ramesh Prasad: Ramesh Prasad: Ramesh Prasad: Ramesh Prasad: Acting for varied movies, my father moved on to directing and finally a producer. When I joined hands, I started off with doing
the technical support work like processing. That's when I decided to start the laboratories and grew Prasad Labs to one of the best labs in terms of quality and film processing. Though my father was a highly creative individual with his true passion towards cinema, the labs became the foundation to the
“Dolby has been pioneering experiences in the Cinema for decades. Our collaboration with Prasads has been one delightful journey. They are a legacy and sharing the same vision with them to bring immersive cinematic experiences now powered by Dolby Atmos and Dolby 3D glasses will deliver a truly memorable & a spectacular experience to every moviegoer”

Pacific, Dolby Laboratoriesbusiness empire of Prasad's. This kept us going for over 30 - 40 years. At one time, all films from Bombay used to come to Chennai for processing; we were the pioneers in changing technology and film processing. In previous years we used to see hazy images on the screen, not very clear, we changed into adventive system of grading, it was the latest technology at the time. We were also the first to import processing machines. Naturally, everyone from Bombay came to us.
In the early 90's I made a visit to the Smithsonian Museum in the US and was exposed to an IMAX presentation. Showcasing the film, To Fly, truly got me by surprise. Post which I had made up my mind to bring this experience to India. Hence, visited the Toronto office. Keeping a keen eye and minds determined, we completed the project in a matter of 17 months. Cinema was the prime focus for us, we didn't look for anything else. Being the first to get IMAX introduced, many more records broke in terms of attendance alone.
Prasad's predominantly, we are service providers, targeting only the media and film industry, cinemas are our core. We have always been the first movers, right from bringing in the lab equipment to grading to telecine machines to scanners. 20 years ago we opened this property, and this was the first large screen IMAX experience, and this is the first multiplex in Hyderabad. Back then there was no concept of multiplexes, it was all single screen theatres. This is the only multiplex the patrons had.
What inspired the concept PCX?
Ramesh Prasad: Ramesh Ramesh Prasad: Ramesh Ramesh Prasad: As mentioned previously, Prasad's has always strived to bring the best technology. In 2012, when films went digital, that's when we had to take a call on converting our large screen. Ours is the second largest 3D screen in the world. When the change and advancement
Dolby Atmos is a pioneering spatial audio technology that offers a premium, multidimensional experience for your entertainment, adding layers beyond traditional surround sound. Created for the cinema, Dolby Atmos is an innovative audio technology, with sound that actually moves around you in an immersive soundscape. While sound recorded in stereo is limited to left and right channels, sound mixed in Dolby Atmos is freed from channels. Sound mixers can place individual sounds, so they move all around you. They can also decide the volume, size, and diffusion level of each voice, rustling leaf, or footstep to reveal nuanced details in the audio.
With Dolby Atmos, sound can be precisely placed anywhere in the cinema, even overhead, creating an immersive soundscape that sounds more like real life. This technology is a game-changer in simplifying the creative process. It allows creatives to control the placement and movement of each
sound, helping them create a rich and layered experience when telling their stories or bringing songs to life. Dolby Atmos helps people to discover sound that doesn't feel like it's coming from speakers but makes them feel like they are actually inside the experience.
What also enhances the Dolby Atmos experience at Prasads are the Dolby 3D glasses. These glasses are different from other 3D cinema technologies and give an experience that is completely true to the movie creator's intent. The Dolby 3D glasses have a modern industrial design using durable materials and construction techniques with wraparound sides and a comfortable fit. The sensormatic tag is compatible with common antitheft systems. The glasses use a unique fullspectrum color technology that provides extremely crisp, clear images. They are durable, lightweight, and eco-friendly. The design is reusable design and can last for hundreds of uses.
Patrons have always loved the experience!!! Tell us about the new addition to the hat...
happened, there was the technology to fill up the large screen. We did not want to give a subpar experience, and that's when we did the first upgradation. We converted all of our six screens to 4K digital projection. Then we took a call to replace that with a dual 4K. Along with that we did the interiors, we redid the sound systems, we redid the entire look and feel of the cinema for Baahubali I. It's been good so far. Then slowly we started getting the laser projectors. Two years ago, when Barco launched their flagship projectors, we equipped our cinema with it.
This time, we checked our calendars and saw that Avatar 2 was set to release and we shut down in August last year and started the upgrades. When you see the size you will know that it is a massive task to upgrade that especially with 3D sound. It is 100-feet ceiling and it made upgrading very challenging.
Our inspiration is that, we knew we had to do justice to bring back the visual that the public and we were used to being such a big and large screen. At Prasad's we like to deliver what the movie was mastered for.
What was the time frame for the renovation?
Ramesh Prasad: Prasad: Ramesh Prasad: Prasad: It took good 3-4 months. We got the projectors a year and a half ago, and we were playing it as it is. August is when we shut down the screen. We have been renovating year on year, we have been constantly upgrading this property. Despite this we take pride in saying that our pricing is very affordable because we cater to a family audience.
The dome as well was a landmark design 20 years ago and even today and was the first of its kind and designed by the world-renowned Raja Aedri. The designer was the same man who designed the ICICI building in Mumbai. It was his idea to give the property this unique touch. We did have a few challenges, like
water leakages because the glass is so huge. The internal designing and renovations were done by Eranna Yekbote, Chief Architect at Era Architects.
Even for the auditoriums, we didn't prefer it to be flashy or bright colours. Because ultimately you're coming to watch a movie and you want it to be pitch black as you focus on the movie. Hence, nothing should be a distraction.
What were the challenges experienced overtime?
Ramesh Pras Pras Ramesh Pras Pras Pras ad: ad: ad: ad: ad: We never really went in looking for financial gain of any sorts. Nobody would spend excessive amounts of money to renovate an existing screen. Even with IMAX, it is a huge expense. To create using IMAX cameras or to get a remastered IMAX print, it has undoubtedly been expensive on the higher note. Keeping track of the 3D glasses have been yet another task to uphold as they are so much more expensive than the regular glasses. Operationally it was difficult when we started out. We had to put detectors at the doors. Even the scaffolding, it was a challenge to get the screen down; but this time, thanks to the technology: it came in a foldable format.
What sets Prasad apart from other contemporaries?
Ramesh Prasad: Prasad: This property if you look at it from an isolated model, from
then it is profitable. Today to get the real estate cost or to rent out it would not be possible. That is why multiplexes today are getting smaller. The business model with rents especially is not considerably attractive. For such. it is more about scale and valuation. Today for anyone else it would not be feasible. But since we have been firm for nearly 20 years, we are lucky, and the business has shown pure success.
Another advantage we have had as Prasads being a multiplex 20 years ago, is that the brand value remains to date. People still associate good movie watching experience with us. We still have the fanbase that we have had from day 1. It has been a true legacy that we treasure.
Any plans of expansion and development?
Ramesh Prasad: Ramesh Ramesh Prasad: Ramesh Ramesh Prasad: I always wanted to grow this very segment. But growth is definitely there on the cards. Having said this, parking is one major sector we look forward to tackle. From the cinema point of view, we have four big screens, one large screen and one small screen. In which one screen is still yet to be renovated soon. A few new concepts are underway. We moved away from retail and introduced a family entertainment concept. Mystery rooms, laser shoots have already started and now we have two new concepts coming up to add to that.

Gopuram Cinemas:
A Contemporising Effort
Popularly recalled as the Saraswathi Theatre, this cinema facility is located in the heart of Sellur in Madurai. Its ultraluxurious appeal and best-in-class cinema technologies and seating capacity of up to 1000 moviegoers, makes it one of the most coveted cinema entertainment facilities in the city.
Gopuram Cinemas is a historically renowned cinema structure that once was a single screen cinema with a huge balcony. Colloquially remembered as the Saraswathi Theatre, the once single screen cinema's auditorium had a seating capacity of 1000 moviegoers. The Chairman Anbuchezhian and Managing Director of the property Sushmitha Anbuchezhian thought if bringing in a wide array of movies, genres and varieties to the premises.
Their vision led to the conversion of the single screen cinema complex into a three-screen luxurious and modern multiplex. The Chief Architect Punniamoorthi and Architect Anand of Dezign and Construction Studio,
Chennai approached this vision and unfolded their ideas. They came up with a solution to convert the firstclass seats into a screen and the balcony portion of the auditorium into yet another screen. They also brought in the lobby area that was vastly available on the first floor and introduced a mini screen within this multiplex. Altogether the three screens continue to carry on the 1000-seater legacy that is now boosted with ultra-luxurious seats. Complimenting the auditoriums, the cinema facility boasts a huge and spacious lobby area.
The civil work of the cinema facility was a challenging task because of the
balcony area. When converting the single screen into a three-screen multiplex, the architects utilised MS fabrication work to extend into screen 1 since they did not want to lose any seats from screen 2. The immersive ambience of the auditorium compliments the 3D view and finishes each screen in a wine, red and golden coloured theme. All of these designs have been conceptualised and executed by Dezign and Construction Studio, Chennai. Screen 1 seats up to 525 moviegoers, screen 2 is equipped with 330 seats and the last mini screen, screen 3 accommodates 130 moviegoers. The audio technology is top notch with QSC speakers and the projection is equipped with laser projection from Barco.
"We had created two lobby spaces, one on the ground floor and the other on the first with luxurious alabaster lightings and chandeliers. The elevation design was another area that wowed the owners and moviegoers. The audiences are treated to the best treat served by the entire team who have dedicated their heart and soul to this project," added Anand Narain, Architect, Dezign and Construction Studio, Chennai. The seating has been procured from Pen Workers seating company providing the audience with best-in-class experience. It is not only the ambience and luxurious premises, but also the quality of staff, housekeeping and the quality of the food that is served.
