HELLO AND WELCOME. This edition is so packed with amazing images and information, I honestly don’t know where to start. Let’s begin with our stunning cover that was shot on The Pines at Sanctuary Cove. We were very privileged to be given exclusive access to this championship golf course, and even more honoured to have our human models joined by the very beautiful Khandhu Lyka Prayer 'Amari'– the Australian Supreme Champion Afghan Hound who really stole the show. This elegant montage sets the tone for our annual Luxury Living edition, which showcases everything you need to make your home warm and welcoming this winter including a special Home Comforts feature that begins on page 74. As the weather cools down, it is more important than ever to take care of your wellbeing. With this in mind, our Looking Good section has some useful information on the services available at the Sanctuary Cove health hub and the increasing interest in men’s Barre, yoga and Pilates classes. One man who is the epitome of good health despite his advancing years is legendary singer, Sir Tom Jones. With a new album and a renewed zest for life, the 80-year-old shares some of his deepest thoughts in a revealing celebrity interview.

Wheels & Water enthusiasts are well catered for as we take a look at a racy, red McLaren, open the doors to the Gold Coast Motor Museum and reveal LuxJet’s plans for private plane ownership. Food and fashion are two other subjects close to our hearts so we bring you a preview of the upcoming Brisbane Fashion Festival, share snapshots of some very cute kids clothing, reveal what’s on the menu for Jonez on Food chef, Gary Jones, and taste the latest low and no-alcohol beers from local Indigenous brewery, Sobah. And, of course, we have an amazing competition prize – actually, make that prizes – in this edition, with Mx Skincare providing three Hero Packs valued at $1,000 each for us to give away. I think I’ve covered most bases, but please, feel free to browse through the entire magazine to see what I may have missed.

YES,

SIR

He may be 80, but Sir Tom Jones has still ‘got it’, as can be attested by his remarkable new album Surrounded by Time. LEX MARTIN / THE INTERVIEW PEOPLE

AT THE BEGINNING of the interview, legendary singer Sir Tom Jones may seem overly calm, but this is not due to a lack of energy. On the contrary, during our conversation the 80-year-old unfolds an intense look into his personal life and presents himself as a highly reflective thinker. You seem quite brimming with energy. Definitely. I can’t wait to get back on the road to sing some live shows … that’s the biggest drive for me. I am escaping Covid, that’s the first thing, but secondly, I would love to go and sing to the people. Without the people, what’s the point. Your new album is titled Surrounded by Time. What is your attitude to time? When you’re a child especially, you don’t think about time. Old age is a long way away as far as you are concerned. The early part of my life went slower. I wanted to be an adult, I wanted to go drinking in the pub with my uncles and my father, I wanted to become a man. That seemed like a long time when I was in Wales. Then when I got my first hit record, all of a sudden time started to speed up and I was having such a great time. I figured out now that I am 80, how much time do I have left? How many more albums can I make? Because I love to make new albums, and to go out and sing to the people. But thank God, my voice is still there. Without that, it would not work. Is there anything you still want to explore in life? Not really. Nothing important because what I wanted to do was make music. I wanted to sing to people, and I have been doing that. Travelling has come into it because I have always been interested in geography, history. I like to travel to different countries to see and hear what the people are like. I think the best way to do that is to go and sing. You are getting a feeling, I do anyway, of the people you are singing to. God could not have given me a better gift than he did in order to sing and travel and see different people all over the world. >>

FEATURE Aren’t you scared of singing songs like I’m Growing Old? No … and I can tell you why. I got that song in the 70s when I was in my 30s. The man who wrote it was in Vegas at the same time and he came into my dressing room and said, ‘I got this song and I can hear you singing it in my mind’. I loved the song, but I thought I can’t sing it yet, I’ll keep it because one day I’ll be old enough to sing it and now is the time. So I have held onto it for a long time. There is one line, one thing which I should have reversed. ‘Although I saved a lock of hair, I no longer dream about my wife’, which is completely wrong, because I dream about her every night but I don’t have a lock of her hair. I should have changed those lyrics. I wished I had. That one line is not true of me, because I always take on songs as if it is me. Do you think we are just this one life and there is nothing beyond? I was thinking about this last night. Before I go to sleep, I think a lot as most people do, and I looked over my life and I thought: A lot of things that have happened to me cannot be coincidental. I touched death. I had a stroke. It was not quite that, but I started to feel a little strange. I was close to a hospital in LA so they took me in and tested me out. If I had been anywhere else, who knows. The same thing happened when I was in London. I had a clot in my arm. I was wondering: What is wrong with my hand? It started to go numb. We called emergency and they took me in right away. They said, ‘there is a clot off your heart and it’s stuck right there and unless we release it, we may have to cut your arm off’. But I was right there. If I had been on an airplane or something, going somewhere else – the timing. All these things – why do these things happen to me at a certain time in my life? My manager Gordon Mills. He was the one who saw me in a club and got my first hit record. As he got older, he got ill but I kept him as a manager. When he passed away, my son and my daughter-in-law took over, and all of a sudden, they injected some new life into me. That’s why I recorded Kiss with the Art of Noise. These things that have happened to me in my life, even though they were bad at the time, they turned into something good. Are these coincidences or is there a master plan?

28 covemagazine.com.au

– Issue 85

We’ve got to do the best we can with what God gives us, but I feel there is definitely a power that is keeping things together. He smiled on me and first of all gave me a voice and then the ability to see it through. There are a lot of people that can sing, but they don’t have that desire that I did. And my wife, God bless her – we got married very young, teenagers – she was always very understanding. She loved music as much as I do and she loved the fact that I was doing what I really wanted to do. All these things, that have happened to me, they have made me a better person.

“These things that have happened to me in my life, even though they were bad at the time, they turned into something good.” – Sir Tom Jones

Do you think love is the reason why you are here? I think so. It was not just by accident that my wife was born around the corner from me. We went to school at the same time. We grew up together. I don’t think there is a time on love – it just happens – but it should take you and hit you hard. That’s what I believe. Some people don’t meet the right person, but with me, we got married when it hit us hard. Was that the reason why you stayed together for so long? Yes. She said: ‘Look, I know what you are going to do and you will have a lot of temptations. I don’t want to know but if somebody starts coming up to me or I read about things in the paper that you are not considering me first as number one, we can’t be together’. And I said: ‘You will always be number one’. And that’s true. I was devastated when she passed away. There’s another song on the album: I Won’t Crumble. – ‘I will do anything for you, everything possible, but I can’t fall with you.’ That resonated with me. I did everything I could, but she had lung cancer. >>

She was strong. I was falling apart, and she said ‘You can’t. You have to sing’. And I said: ‘I don’t know if I will be able to. The words will stick in my throat’. Honestly, I really thought that and she said: ‘Think of me and think of the good times. Let me put a smile on your face, not sadness in your heart. Look at the life we have had’. She was the one. If it was not for her, I don’t know what would have happened. What keeps you from crumbling? Music? Oh yes, and family. My son and my daughter-in- law and my two grandchildren. That’s why I moved back to England from Los Angeles, because they live here. My son especially gives me strength, because he was in the room when my wife was dying and she said ‘You two, you’ve got to mentor one another’. I never heard her say that word before. ‘You’ve got to be together even more than before’. He helped get me to sing again. He got these musicians around me and we quietly and slowly came to it. We played Hampton Court, which is an outdoor venue just outside of London, and the audience all knew I was under pressure. And again, people, they lifted me up. You get these trials and tribulations. You get hurdles that you have to get over. But hopefully it will make you stronger rather than destroy you. And so far, thank God, it has with me.

You are someone who thinks about life very intensely ... Definitely. Isn’t it a bit ironic that the public may have a different idea of you? Well, yeah. When you perform on stage, you are portraying yourself in a certain way, not really knowing sometimes what effect it has on people. They see you in a way, and sometimes it goes against what you are trying to do vocally because of the way you are presenting yourself on stage. So people go: ‘Oh yeah, Tom Jones, tight pants, open neck shirt, people throw things at him – that’s him’. But wait a minute – why was I there to begin with? What got me out on the stage? My voice. Another thing with age, you are taken more seriously. People now listen to these songs and they resonate. They are more believable when you are older. And I am not on stage jumping all over the place. I concentrate more now on the way I sing as opposed to the way I move. These songs that I am doing on this album now, people are listening. This is why I did the spoken songs, Oh Mother Earth, and Talking TV Blues. When you speak the words, they have more meaning and people listen – sometimes.

There must still be a lot of women that lust after you. Are they still throwing panties? Thank God, no. That went with my time. Now that I am older, hopefully, that sexy interpretation is levelled up.

“We’ve got to do the best we can with what God gives us, but I feel there is definitely a power that is keeping things together.” – Sir Tom Jones

You can’t be up there saying ‘I am Mr. Macho’. I am not … some young fellow can wipe the bloody floor with me. You’ve got to understand different parts of your life and live accordingly. I am certainly enjoying myself now. I am feeling different than when I was young, but I am enjoying it, and thank God I am still alive. I want to live as long as I possibly can.

Immortality would be a wonderful thing but you can’t live forever so you accept it. I am getting as much out of my life as possible and hopefully I have done what God intended. What has been one of the most exciting experiences that springs to mind? The thing that I never counted on at all was being knighted by the Queen. When I was a child, I thought: ‘I want to be a professional singer, I want to sell records. I want to sing to loads of people. I want to be able to get my talent across so I don’t have to go and do a job in order to survive. If I can make a living out of singing, I will be the happiest person in the world’ – which I am. But you don’t think about being knighted. I still look at my grandfather who died in WWI. He was a Company Sergeant Major, so we have his medals and a picture of him in a frame. I always thought: ‘I have never been in the military – I won’t be able to have medals like him’. But my knighthood, it comes with a medal, and I look at my grandfather’s pictures now and I go ‘Grandpa, I wish you could see me now. That your grandson is a knight of the realm’. I never saw it coming. When I was a kid, they were not knighting entertainers. It’s a wonderful thing. That is the thing I am most proud of that I didn’t foresee at all. Again, it’s because of showbusiness that I got that medal.

CITY ICONS

ROCK STAR

John Calleija is a proud Gold Coaster with a passion for precious gems.

WORDS RHONDA OXNAM WALKING INTO THE CALLEIJA BOUTIQUE at Marina Mirage is like entering Aladdin’s Cave. Precious gems shimmer under the spotlights, priceless jewels spin in their glass cabinets and stunning pink diamonds take pride of place among the treasures. And at the heart of it all is John Calleija – master jeweller, award-winning designer, proud Gold Coaster and all-round nice guy. But it was luck, literally, that led John to establish his very successful business here on the Coast. As a young up-and-coming jeweller, he decided to chase sunnier skies, so he jumped in his 1986 Jaguar and drove up from Sydney to see what opportunities were available. “When I arrived I dropped into the newsagency at Sanctuary Cove and purchased a multi-week lotto ticket,” John recalls. "The first week, I won $6.66, the second I won $666, the third another $6.66 and the final week a further $666. “I’m still waiting for the big win, but shortly after that I was introduced to my beautiful wife, Noni, and decided that fate was telling me I was exactly where I need to be.” He went on to create the Calleija brand – a name synonymous with beautiful jewellery right around the world. “Calleija is an international award-winning, renowned Australian brand with 30 years of luxury jewellery expertise and one of very few Argyle Pink Diamond Select Ateliers in the world,” John says. “We are a design house guided by my artistry and passion for unique design. “We have state-of-the-art workshops located in-house in our Australian and London boutiques, with our flagship boutique right here on the Gold Coast. “Our timeless jewellery and bespoke pieces are created by a wonderful team of experienced designers and master jewellers.” Many of John’s pieces feature the highly sought-after Argyle Pink Diamonds, a commodity that has become even more precious given the recent closure of the Western Australian mine. “Argyle Pink Diamonds are 1.6 billion-year-old gifts of nature,” John says. “The Argyle Pink Diamond mine started nearly 40 years ago and has produced phenomenal pink, blue and red diamonds, with colour saturation and quality like no other diamond mine in the world. “However, even as the world’s largest and only consistent source of pink diamonds, these magnificent gems are incredibly rare – an entire year’s collection over one carat would barely fill the palm of your hand.

“The Argyle mine has been the source of 90 per cent of the global supply of pink diamonds, so this closure means that these gems will now become beyond scarce and increasingly valuable. “For me personally, the closure of the mine feels like losing a friend,” he insists. “I’ve been fortunate enough to work with these amazing diamonds for more than three decades and I have a true passion and deep understanding for just how precious and rare they are. “The mine’s closure makes me even more conscious of the responsibility we have to ensure we continue creating bespoke works of art to complement these coveted diamonds.” Speaking of creations, how does your design process work? “I love getting to know our clients, understanding their individuality, their passions and inspirations; reading their personality, then the design comes naturally,” John replies. “I’ve always had an eye for form and how shapes and patterns flow to create balance and beauty, and I have a desire to create pieces that break the boundaries of traditional design. “When designing a piece featuring Argyle Pink Diamonds, I take great care in every single detail of the piece being created, always making sure that the natural beauty of these breathtaking diamonds is honoured. “I love every piece I create but I admit I will always favour pieces with a rare Australian Argyle Pink Diamond because I am in love with their mysterious, beautiful colour and rarity.” Each Calleija creation is the result of meticulous detailing and superb craftsmanship, and not only are they beautiful to look at, they are also made with best practices in regards to sustainability and the environment. “I am very proud to say Calleija was recently awarded with the Butterfly Mark certification from Positive Luxury,” John says. “This is the only international trust mark that recognises luxury brands for their commitment to creating a positive impact on people and the planet. “I take great pride in the fact all Calleija jewellery is created with authentic and responsibly sourced materials.

“This is why we only support long-term suppliers that are stringent with their sustainability practices too. “We only work with specific diamond companies that subscribe to the highest ethical standards of the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme (KPCS). “We can also trace each gemstone back to the mine of its origin by using Argyle pink, red and blue diamonds in our creations.” In a career that spans several decades and extends right around the world, there have been many highlights, however, John admits that working with royalty was one of the best.

“It is so much better when you share your success to uplift people and I love sharing success with my team, my family, clients and more.” – John Calleija “Back in 2013 I was fortunate to meet Zara Philips, the Queen’s granddaughter, during the Magic Millions right here on the Gold Coast. “We quickly realised we both shared a passion for distinctive design and exceptional quality and we began to work together to create our beautiful Zara Philips by Calleija collection. “It’s an absolute pleasure to be able to collaborate with Zara to create pieces that are contemporary, timeless, wearable and accessible for everyone.” Another standout moment was creating the stunning ‘Virtual Eros’ diamond mask. “We won the De Beers International Diamond Design Award in 2000 out of over 2,500 entries with that piece,” John recalls.

“Virtual Eros was designed with 44 carats of brilliant diamonds and was chosen as a personal favourite by Madonna. “To see it featured in countless publications and in Alexander McQueen’s catwalk was a remarkable experience and I was so thankful to win this prestigious award.” While such recognition has allowed him to pursue his dream, John also enjoys taking time out to explore other interests. "Success means freedom … having the freedom to create and design what I want and where I want,” he says. “Success also means it benefits others and not just the individual. “It is so much better when you share your success to uplift people and I love sharing success with my team, my family, clients and more. “When I am away from work, I enjoy spending time with my lovely wife and daughter,” he adds. “And I have always been interested in anything that exudes beautiful design, whether it’s architecture, boats, yachts, or cars (modern and classic). “This is why all of our boutiques are in magnificent locations. “London is in the historic Royal Arcade on Old Bond Street; it’s the oldest arcade in London and a vision of stunning Victorian design. “Our Sydney boutique is in The Fullerton Hotel Sydney, which is simply majestic outside and in. “And of course, our Gold Coast boutique is in Marina Mirage surrounded by blue skies and a beautiful coastline. "If I didn't design jewellery, I would have loved to design yachts, boats or be a naval architect – I love the water and I love design.” As for what’s next … “I can’t predict the future, but I can tell you there are many things I would still like to achieve,” John admits. “There is so much more to experience and design … I feel as if my imagination is always ignited by something and the best is yet to come.”

SPORT REPORT

PERFECT TIMING

OMEGA is proud to be the official timekeeper of the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020.

IT MAY BE A LITTLE LATER than planned, but this year, the Land of the Rising Sun will finally become OMEGA’s own land of Recording Dreams. For the 29th time in history, the brand will fulfil its role as the Official Timekeeper of the Olympic Games, bringing almost 90 years of experience to Tokyo 2020. A total of 339 events in 33 sports will be competed in Japan, and OMEGA will be measuring every second of action. This includes brand new sports such as karate, sport climbing, surfing, baseball/softball and skateboarding, giving the Swiss watchmaker more competitions to record than ever before. Of course, the greatest focus will be on the determined athletes aiming for gold. Each of them has dedicated years, months and hours to reach this moment. Their dreams depend on those final results, making OMEGA’s precision and equipment a vital part of every event. Thankfully, OMEGA has experience. In fact, the brand has been at the Olympic Games for nearly every edition since 1932. During those years, the brand has evolved, developed and implemented many of the most famous timekeeping technologies in sport. Now, at Tokyo 2020, OMEGA’s expertise will reach a new peak. As well as providing 400 tonnes of its most trusted and state-of-the-art equipment, the brand will also continue a truly exciting era of real-time data measurement. Every event has its own timekeeping systems and sport-specific technology. These are just some of the familiar pieces of OMEGA equipment you are likely to see. THE ELECTRONIC STARTING PISTOL The problem with traditional pistols, is that sound travels slower than light, meaning that the athletes in the furthest lanes would hear the start later than everyone else, while closer athletes heard it first. Today, OMEGA’s solution is an electronic pistol that is connected to speakers positioned behind each racer. When the trigger is pressed, a sound is ‘played’, a light flash is emitted and a start pulse is given to the timing device. This system is the fairest way to give every athlete an equal start.

34 covemagazine.com.au

– Issue 85

ATHLETICS STARTING BLOCKS As well as having integrated speakers, the starting blocks in athletics are also enhanced with built-in sensors that measure an athlete’s force against the footrest 4,000 times per second. The detection system instantly sends the force measurements to an on-site computer so that the starter can visually see any false start. The rules of World Athletics fix the minimum reaction time at 100 milliseconds (a tenth of a second). Any reaction which takes place below this limit is considered to be premature and places the runner in a false start situation.

It’s a perfect way for athletes and spectators to instantly see the outcome of a race.

SCAN’O’VISION MYRIA The Scan’O’Vision MYRIA is the most advanced photofinish camera in OMEGA’s history. Placed on the finish lines of sprints, hurdles and other races, it is able to record up to 10,000 digital images per second, producing a composite photo that enables judges to determine the official rankings and times of each event. The images from the photofinish camera are now a famous sight at the Olympic Games, and prove just how close some races can really be.

QUANTUM TIMER Mechanical stopwatches are a thing of the past. Today, OMEGA counts the seconds on its Quantum Timer, with an enhanced resolution of one millionth of a second. Driven by a micro crystal component imbedded in the timer, the resolution is 100 times greater than previous devices and, with a maximum variation of only one second out of every ten million seconds, it is five times more accurate.

PHOTOCELL TECHNOLOGY Remember the traditional tape that was stretched across the finish line of races? Since 1948, this has been replaced by photocell technology, which emits beams of light instead. As soon as the winning athlete crosses those beams, their winning time is instantly recorded. OMEGA now uses four photocells on the finish line, all integrated into one unit, allowing more body patterns to be detected. While this gives OMEGA an immediate finishing time, the official time is always taken from the photofinish camera.

HI-RESOLUTION SCOREBOARDS OMEGA’s hi-resolution scoreboards display not only text and live information, but also animations, athlete pictures and visual imagery. Using modern effects, winners’ names, results and their nation’s flag are boldly displayed, adding to the drama, thrill and excitement of each event.

SWIMMING LIGHT SHOW An innovative light system called the Swimming Light Show features lights mounted on the starting blocks at the end of the pool. When a race is over, a single large dot indicates the athlete that came first, two medium-sized dots show who came second, and three smaller dots of light confirm the third place finisher.

SWIMMING TOUCHPADS At the end of a swimming race, the famous touchpads positioned at both ends of the pool allow swimmers to ‘stop the clock’ by exerting a pressure of between 1.5 and 2.5 kg. Because of these touchpads, swimming has long been the only sport in which competitors can stop their own running time. It’s the most precise way to measure time in this challenging sport and OMEGA was responsible for first introducing the technology at the Olympic Games in 1968.

OMEGA’s Tokyo 2020 Collection SEAMASTER AQUA TERRA LIMITED EDITION Just like the athletes at the Olympic Games, the Seamaster Aqua Terra performs beautifully on land and in the water. For this sporty Tokyo 2020 model, OMEGA has introduced the collection’s first ceramic dial – crafted with a polished blue finish and a laser-engraved Tokyo 2020 emblem. Limited to just 2,020 pieces, the watch comes ready for action on a structured blue rubber strap and includes an additional stainless steel bracelet in its special presentation box.

SEAMASTER PLANET OCEAN LIMITED EDITION OMEGA has crafted this patriotic Seamaster with a true Japanese touch. The polished white ceramic dial continues the Tokyo theme with a special lollipop central seconds hand. Beautifully representing the flag of Japan, its tip has been crafted with a varnished red dot. Also limited to just 2,020 models, this timepiece is driven by the OMEGA Master Chronometer Calibre 8800 and features a sapphire crystal caseback with a transferred Tokyo 2020 emblem.

SEAMASTER DIVER 300M We all know about diving at the Olympic Games, but this Diver 300M is more suited to an underwater ocean environment. The 42.00 mm stainless steel case is mounted with a blue ceramic bezel ring filled with a white enamel diving scale. To complement the blue, there is a polished white ceramic dial with laser-engraved waves. Behind the sapphire crystal on the caseback, with its transferred Tokyo 2020 emblem, you’ll find the OMEGA Co-Axial Master Chronometer Calibre 8800 which has been officially certified by the Swiss Federal Institute of Metrology.

FOR THE SKIN AND SOUL

Photo: Monique Grisanti, Uneek Creative

Mx Skincare founder Allison Pickering knows good skincare. So, when she couldn’t find the kind of luxury, science-backed products she wanted, she had them made herself.

44 covemagazine.com.au

– Issue 85

ALLISON PICKERING has always been surrounded by skincare. From the age of 10, she watched as her mother sat at a dressing table applying her skincare, morning and night. Her grandmother made her own soaps and lotions, and she had an aunty who worked in cosmetics. “I’ve been doing a seven-step routine since I was 16 years of age,” Alli reveals. In short, she was destined for a career in skincare. Growing up in regional New South Wales, Alli's career began after she landed an internship at the local pharmacy. “I was in year 10, and on my second day there, they offered me full-time work,” Alli reveals. A natural in sales, she was soon breaking records and set her sights on new challenges, eventually moving to the Gold Coast. Since then, Alli’s roles have ranged from managing make-up counters and working as a professional make-up artist, to a stint in New York working in wholesale travel; even radio sales and real estate. Alli was eventually drawn back to the world of skincare. “I’ve always been a career woman, but I had taken some time to raise my family when I noticed a real gap in the market,” Alli explains. “I'm such a skincare junkie, but I had trouble finding a skincare brand that didn't have any nasties in it, but still was a luxury product and had all the right active ingredients.” So, she made it and Mx Skincare was born. The plan? Active ingredients were in, harmful chemicals were out and the products needed to work for all ages, genders and skin types. “I wanted it to be a range that could feature in everyone’s bathroom, that couples could use together,” Alli says. “I wanted a product lineup that was for everyone and every skin concern.” That all-inclusive philosophy is represented in the Mx name, a gender-neutral honorific used by those who either don’t identify as male or female, or prefer not to specify their gender.

Next came science. Mx Skincare is a cosmeceutical, a term that combines the words ‘cosmetic’ and ‘pharmaceutical’ to reflect the hybrid nature of the products that treat skin texture, tone, pigmentation and fine lines. The potency of any cosmeceutical hinges on the quality of its active ingredients and the effectiveness of its delivery system in penetrating the deeper layers of the skin. In her pursuit of the ultimate skincare, Alli called on some of Australia’s top facialists and chemists, her own industry experience, and scoured the globe for the best quality ingredients. When the Mx range was being formulated, Alli trialled every product herself. “I wanted it to feel hydrating, but not oily. The cleanser had to be foamy, but not bubbly. “The products needed to have antioxidants and brightening ingredient s without feeling stripping on the skin, and definitely no perfumes.” The final box the products needed to check for Alli was how they felt to apply. “A celebration of self-care, a luxury experience to look forward to every day,” is how Alli describes the Mx Skincare process. With Mx Skincare now up and running, Alli has more time for the other great loves of her life – her husband, entrepreneur and business identity Maurie Pickering, and their four children. She loves to cook and entertain, and a three-generation Sunday lunch is a weekly family tradition. Throughout her entire career and after the journey to create the skincare she couldn’t find, there’s still one rule this inspirational entrepreneur swears by. “Always take your make-up off before you go to bed." Advice to live by, without a doubt.

RAISING THE BARRE A local studio is encouraging more men to reap the mental and physical rewards of yoga, Pliates and barre classes.

A RENEWED INTEREST in wellness and health has seen a growing number of men participating in barre, yoga and Pilates classes according to local Gold Coast studio, The Floating Lotus. Studio owners Nalini and Jason Tebbey advised the therapeutic benefits of yoga and Pilates for men were well documented and are encouraging more Gold Coasters to take up the challenge for their physical and mental health. “People have long associated yoga and Pilates with women but we are definitely starting to see a shift in that mentality, particularly over the past 10 months,” Nalini explains. “There has been so much change and disruption over the past year so to have a physical activity that you enjoy and promotes mind and body balance is just so important.”

Membership at The Floating Lotus has increased by nearly 300 per cent since July 2020 and Nalini expects to see even more male faces in her classes as men become increasingly aware of the benefits. “I’m not at all surprised that we are seeing more men join the studio,” said Nalini. “I think men have traditionally opted for the ‘tough’” training style that you see through weights training and Crossfit which can be hard on your muscles. “Our classes use bodyweight and stretching to build strength from within and improve compound movements. “Many of our clientele are using them to support performance across all of their fitness interests.

“That weekend Pilates class could indeed improve your next compound movement like a deadlift at the gym.” Nalini also advised that the classes were often a great outlet for males who can be less open about discussing mental health. “Men can be less aware of their stress levels and their thoughts so promoting exercise that fosters mindfulness and doing so within our supportive studio community, is also something that we are very passionate about,” she said. COMMUNITY CARE

Chempro Sanctuary Cove’s Donay Meijer has some timely advice to beat the winter blues.

MOVING TO AUSTRALIA from South Africa with her family when she was 8-years-old, Chempro Sanctuary Cove Pharmacist Donay Meijer says she has always known she wanted to study and work in the medical field. With a passion for helping others, as well as excelling in Mathematics and Chemistry, she started working in Pharmacy while studying for a Bachelor and Masters in Pharmaceutical Science at Griffith University. “Over my 10 years of working and managing pharmacies, a few opportunities to purchase into a store of my own had arisen, however, I was still waiting for the right fit for me,” Donay explains. “When the opportunity to buy into Sanctuary Cove Pharmacy came up, I knew this was the right store. “My family and I had lived and grown up in the area, and I always wanted to be part of a tightknit community, where I could build customer relationships and provide one-on-one service to the community. “Although it has been one of the most challenging things I have done, taking over a Pharmacy in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic, it has also been the most rewarding.” This year Chempro Sanctuary Cove relocated into a new fit-out, and the feedback and support from the community have been incredible. This has allowed them to expand the range of products, especially focussing more on preventative health supplements and nutrition. “I am very passionate about health, and empowering people to take ownership and control of their health,” Donay says. “This includes diet and lifestyle changes, as well as supplements that are suitable to their health needs. “We have expanded our health range to include some fantastic new products, including the full selection of Nurtaorganics, True Protein, Beforeyouspeak coffee, Gevity RX bone broth and much more. “I am seeing a lot more customer interest, as well as clinical studies looking into the importance of Gut Health and how this can affect many other aspects of health including immune support and brain health.

50 covemagazine.com.au

– Issue 85

“Collagen and bone broth are two of the most talked-about supplements on the market now, both having great benefits to support gut health.” According to Donay, immune function has also been a topic of interest, with many patients looking at products to help support the natural immune system. “This is something I encourage patients to speak to their pharmacist about, as many herbal supplements can have contraindications and interfere with other prescriptions medications,” she says. “I also stress the importance of quality sleep. “The pandemic has resulted in an increase in insomnia, or poor-quality sleep, caused by a few factions such as lack of physical exercise and less time spent outdoors as well as less valuable human interactions. “I encourage patients to try and get sunshine within the first 30 mins of waking, to allow the body's natural hormones to be released as they wake, and to try to avoid blue light after 5pm, to allow their body's melatonin to be released. “Exercise, regular sleep times and avoiding caffeine past 2pm can also help." If this, however, hasn't been beneficial, Donay encourages patients to speak to their pharmacist or health care professionals about other options. As we are approaching winter, we are also seeing an increase in eczema and dermatitis. This can be triggered by allergies and cooler, dryer weather as well as lifestyle changes such as longer, hotter showers, or using soap that can strip the body’s natural oils from the skin and cause small cracks that trigger inflammation of the skin. “We have seen some incredible results with La Roche Posay, a French skincare range designed for highly reactive or dry skin,” says Donay. “The Lipikar AP Baume, specifically, has antiitching properties, is extremely hydrating and provides an instant soothing effect. “It is enriched with prebiotic Aqua Posae Filiformis, Shea butter and Niacinamide to replenish the skins natural barrier.” Chempro Sanctuary Cove is now located at 4B Masthead Way, Sanctuary Cove and is open 7 days.

FACTS & FIGURES

TIME FOR CHANGE Adjunct Professor of Law and Director of Family Law and Domestic Violence, Jason Murakami, says it is time to review the legislature’s decision to place alleged acts of domestic and family violence (DFV) in a civil jurisdiction regime.

UNDER THE Domestic and Family Violence Protection Act 2012, any proceedings under the Act proceed as a civil matter, with a civil standard of proof and no requirement to comply with the rules of evidence. Despite the good intentions of the Act, its report card in 2021 would have to be a below average mark. The suggested rating is anchored in the current staggering statistics, which indicates an alarming prevalence of domestic violence in the community as well as the anecdotal evidence of the practitioners who spend day in, day out in the Domestic Violence Courts throughout Queensland. As stakeholders in this ubiquitous problem, many practitioners see the shortcomings of the current legislation regularly. There is an urgent need to make changes to the current legislation regime to properly address domestic and family violence, which has been described at times as a scourge on our society. One potential way of combating this scourge would be to make the alleged criminal acts arising out of a domestic relationship be charged as criminal acts. Currently, the domestic violence system allows for serious criminal acts to be included in an Application for a Permanent Order simply as ‘acts of domestic violence,’ which are used as one of three elements a court must consider in determining to make a permanent order against a Respondent.

54 covemagazine.com.au

– Issue 85

Far too often, the material before the Domestic Violence Court alleges strangulation, serious assaults and sexual assaults, but the Respondent is not charged with such serious offences. Instead, these allegations are treated as merely alleged acts of domestic violence for the purpose of the application before the Domestic Violence Court. Consequently, often, Respondents intrinsically do not treat an Application for a Permanent Domestic Violence Order containing such allegations as serious. In contrast, if alleged domestic violence acts were treated as criminal behaviour, the Respondent would likely treat the matter with the significance that a serious criminal charge carries. The further benefit of treating such alleged acts as criminal acts also carries the accoutrements of a criminal charge such as bail conditions, ramifications of bail conditions if they are breached, the application of the rules of evidence and the balancing principles of the Penalties and Sentencing Act 1992 in sentencing any offender. It is not a new or novel concept that using the Bail Act 1980, particularly if there is a presumption against bail for a breach involving family and domestic violence matters, is far better weaponry than conditions contained in a temporary protection order. Discussion around whether alleged acts of domestic violence should be treated as criminal is not new, and, indeed, the Minneapolis

Domestic Violence Experiment1 is one of the most famous studies in the field of criminology and criminal justice. Essentially, the research found that alleged perpetrators of domestic violence who were arrested and dealt with under the criminal justice process at first instance were less likely to re-offend. The authors of the research opined that the interaction with the criminal justice system for Respondents was a powerful deterrent to commit further acts of domestic violence. The current system allows for some alleged perpetrators of acts of domestic violence to view the issuing of a Temporary or a Permanent Protection Order and the orders contained within them as not of serious consequence and the finding of guilt to an alleged breach of a temporary or final order as an inconvenience rather than a serious offence with serious punishment. Acts of domestic violence are serious and too often result in death. There is now an urgent need for this behaviour to be called out for what it is and not rebranded as something less. LuxJet offers effortless aircraft ownership, unmatched experience and ultimate reliability.

IMAGINE LOADING the family into your own private jet and heading off to the ski fields. Or skipping the airport queues as you fly interstate for a business meeting. All this and more is on offer with LuxJet, a new endeavour offering Fractional Jet Ownership – think timeshare, however, you own a share of the asset. Founder Maurie Pickering has a long history of private plane ownership and is bringing his wealth of experience to the project. “LuxJet is the optimal private aviation solution for personal or business jet travellers who fly 19-50 hours per year,” he said.

56 covemagazine.com.au

– Issue 85

"We are looking for like-minded people to take a share in their own private jet and enjoy all the benefits associated with ownership.” Operating on a similar system to boat syndication, each owner is allocated 40 days during peak periods and weekends per calendar year, with unlimited last-minute bookings if the plane is available. When you fly, there are costs associated with a specific flight including fuel, oil, engine program, APU program and navigation and landing fees, however, all the associated charges such as pilot wages, conducting your flight and preparing the aircraft are covered by your monthly fee.

This provides you with a turn-key management to ensure your flying experience is stress-free. Capable of long-haul journeys, as well as shorter flights, the mid-size commercial jet has been fitted out in luxury, comfortably seating 10 people, with ample luggage space for larger items such as ski equipment, golf clubs or surfboards. “We also ensure that each owner’s individual needs are taken care of on every flight,” says Maurie. “Everything from having their preferred drinks and snacks on board to handling customs and airport clearances is included.

“The passengers can just relax and enjoy the flight, then take their personal belongings when they leave.” Safety is also paramount, with LuxJet ensuring that all pilots are highly qualified at a commercial level and that the plane is fully operational and well-maintained. LuxJet’s first aircraft will be based on the Gold Coast, with similar opportunities opening up in other Australian locations including Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane as the program expands. “Whether you are flying for business or pleasure, it is nice to have the convenience and functionality of a private jet,” says Maurie. “People work hard to be able to enjoy the finer things in life, and in these days of restricted travel, this type of asset is the perfect way to reward yourself.” The first of its kind in Australia, LuxJet will also offer a fully personalised concierge service. Need tickets to the game … done. Want to book a table at your favourite restaurant… done. Have a car waiting at the airport … done. All you have to do is turn up and get ready for take-off.

SUPER MODEL McLaren introduces the new Artura coupe.

WORDS CHRIS NIXON ENTHUSIASTS for Britain’s McLaren sports car have met a fresh temptation in the form of the all-new Ar tura coupe, which made a pre-sale visit to the Gold Coast and Brisbane recently at the start of a national tour. The Artura will be priced at $449,500 (plus on-road costs) when the first local supply lands in the fourth quarter of this year. That’s firmly in Ferrari, Lamborghini or Aston Martin territory, give or take a few over-priced options. What’s new? Well, you can save on petrol. Here’s why: The Artura differs from rivals in this price range in using hybrid- elec tric

58 covemagazine.com.au

– Issue 85

engine power, a first for a mainstreammodel McLaren. A robust rear-mounted electric motor with battery charged from either onboard regeneration or a mains source is combined with a twin-turbo V6 petrol engine of 3.0 litres’ capacity. (The V6 also is new. Modern McLarens have been V8s until now, but the V6 saves 50kg and valuable space for electric gubbins in the engine compartment.) The result of this is a hefty 500 kiloWatt power output. It will propel the car from rest to 100 kmh in 3.0 seconds and on to a governed top speed of 330 kmh.

But importantly, fuel consumption in hybrid mode is claimed to be as little as 5.5 litres per 100 kms, with corresponding low emissions outputs. That’s as parsimonious as many small hatchbacks. A hi-tech chassis made of moulded carbonfibre helps this performance. The Artura weighs less than 1500 kg at the kerb, light for such a complex vehicle loaded with a big battery – although it should be noted that every electric vehicle weighs more than its fossil-fuel equivalent because of the batteries. McLaren says the bodywork in carbonfibre and aluminium is effectively shrink-wrapped around the chassis to allow an efficient aerodynamic shape.

For the Artura’s relatively light weight, say thanks to McLaren’s decades of hightech experience in Formula 1, surpassed only by Ferrari. The company’s design and engineering focuses on the Formula 1 principles of light weight and mechanical efficiency. Some purist reviewers say this aesthetic results in cars that are fast but lack soul. Only long-term owners can really make a reliable judgement on this, but I’ve never driven a McLaren I didn’t enjoy for its agility, speed and pared-back comfort.

NEWS FLASH BENTAYGA UPDATE The introduction of a Bentley SUV five years ago might have shocked a few stiff upper lips in Pall Mall, but it has proved to be perhaps the historic British make’s most successful model ever. More than 25,000 Bentley Bentaygas have found buyers around the world. Now Bentley has given the model a midlife boost with the introduction of an enhanced S version. It will be the fourth variant in the Bentayga line, after V8, Speed and Hybrid, on its

expected arrival Down Under later this year. (Ask your local dealer about the price.) The Bentayga S will be easy to pick with its black-plated exterior highlights and enormous 22-inch wheels. Bentley might be owned by Volkswagen but right down to its unique hand stitching, there’s nothing mass-market about this epic land barge. The more important features of the S are its interiors in four-, five- or seven-seat configurations and sumptuous leather upholstery.

A twin-turbocharged V8 will get you to 290 kmh if you’re game, but it also has enhanced suspension settings that limit cornering rock ‘n roll and the ability to churn through half a metre of water. And there’s a free-flow exhaust to make boyracer noises. A 290 kmh Bentley off-road is the vehicle you never knew you needed … but wouldn’t it be fun to own one?

MAGNIFICENT MACHINE

Its twin turbo 4.0 V8 will leave you speechless from the moment you press the starter button, while power delivery from standstill is epic and unrelenting. But even though this car is heavily performance focused, it is still a very comfortable and safe place to be in. It has all the technology and standard equipment you would expect from Mercedes-Benz, then AMG have come along and added the extras. This beautiful beast just oozes power and passion and now is your chance to secure one of the finest performance cars to ever hit our roads. CLASSIC COLLECTION Everything old is new again at the Gold Coast Motor Museum.

WHATEVER HAPPENED to Genevieve? For 30 years until the late 80s, she was the movie-star centrepiece of Gilltrap’s Auto Museum, once one of the Gold Coast’s most popular tourist attractions. Genevieve wasn’t an actress but a charming 1904 French-built Darracq car that appeared in a 1953 British film of the same name alongside Kenneth More and Kay Kendall, then was brought to Australia by entrepreneur George Gilltrap. Gilltrap’s closed in 1989 and its exhibits were auctioned. Genevieve was reportedly sold to Holland but the Australian public’s fascination with old cars has re-emerged at a new automotive shrine, the Gold Coast Motor Museum. (Ex-racer Tony Longhurst also has a smaller personal display alongside his Garage 25 café at The Boat Works at Coomera.) Barely 10 minutes’ drive from Dreamworld, Gilltrap’s last residence, the Gold Coast Motor

Museum has already attracted thousands of tourists and become a meeting place for car enthusiasts throughout south-east Queensland. It’s the dream-come-true for brothers Carl and Grant Amor, former body repairers who wanted to complete their late father’s unfulfilled ambition to display his car collection. They bought a beautiful, five-hectare bush site in Upper Coomera, built the museum, a restoration workshop and restaurant and packed in their own collection of more than 70 cars, commercial vehicles and motorbikes. And even a boat. The exhibits were gathered over more than 20 years – at an unimaginable cost, one must assume – and many restored to perfection in the Amors’ own workshop. While a must-see for anyone with a drop of petrol in their veins, the museum in fact promises a fascinating experience for all visitors, of any age.

It’s an eclectic display, drawn from many parts of the world and representing many vehicle types. Vast Cadillac and Lincoln limousines fit for a president sit beside delicate European sports cars including Lamborghini and Ferrari. The Amor brothers will personally demonstrate the siren on the 1911 New York fire chief’s truck and how to enter a tiny, threewheeled Isetta – via the windscreen. Visitors will see everyday models from earlier years and cars they’ve never heard of. Museums often bore me – I’d fall asleep in front of the Mona Lisa – but the Gold Coast Motor Museum has succeeded in creating a significant attraction anyone can enjoy for hours.

A Billion Dollar Year

ollosche kicked off 2021 with a goal of hitting one billion dollars in unconditional sales. Our vision was to bring the best agents on the Gold Coast and Northern NSW together under one umbrella; encouraging them to collaborate by sharing their contacts and experience for the greater good of our clients and the business.

By Michael Kollosche

A stellar year for Commercial The past year has been an exciting era in Gold Coast real estate and one in which our team has grown larger, stronger and more cohesive. In June we marked one year since the launch of Kollosche’s Commercial arm, led by fatherson team Tony and Adam Grbcic.

Our mission was to be the prestige property agency of choice from Sovereign Islands to Byron Bay, adhering to core values of innovation, integrity and transparency to deliver the highest level of service and results for our clients. The Kollosche team has now hit that milestone, surpassing $1 billion in property sales in early June, then with time to spare before the close of the financial year. We’re proud of that achievement and the way in which the entire team - including agents, support staff, marketing and management has worked together to achieve it. We’re also grateful to our clients for entrusting us with the sale, purchase or leasing of your home, investment or commercial asset. This year as a business we’ve also embraced more opportunities to give back to our community, with the entire team throwing its collective weight behind a wide variety of causes close to our hearts, through donations, time and awareness. 2

Picture: ‘Bellagio’ 26 Hampton Court, Sovereign Islands

The Grbcic’s formidable blend of experience, education and commitment has seen them go from strength to strength, backed by the support of their dedicated team. The $42.3 million sale of the Greenmount Hotel in Coolangatta set the bar high from the get-go in January and the Commercial crew have continued to deliver exceptional campaigns and results for our clients.

Momentum to hold through winter Interstate interest, low stock levels and low interest rates are set to fuel ongoing momentum in the Gold Coast market as we move into what is seasonally a quieter period for property. Crisp bluebird days and mild temperatures make winter a magical season on the Gold Coast and our friends in southern states know it. Kollosche agents report enquiry from Melbourne and Sydney has picked up as the mercury drops and the prospect of another long, gloomy winter sets in for some. The recent round of lockdowns and restrictions in Melbourne has also triggered fresh interest in Gold Coast real estate as residents take action on their desire for more space, sun and surf.

The enquiry came through to our team on a Saturday morning, all information was provided over a series of calls and a contract was signed that same evening.

Last month an ultra modern tri-level villa at 20b Conifer Crescent, Broadbeach Waters quietly changed hands off-market for a premium price of $1,925,000.

An additional three contracts were signed on Infinity apartments that same week, at prices ranging between $1,500,000 - $1,800,000.

Also in June a five-bedroom waterfront residence at 18 Viking Court, Paradise Waters sold by private treaty for $3,750,000.

Now under construction on the corner of Surf Parade and George Streets, right in the heart of Broadbeach, residents-only Infinity will deliver 60 spacious apartments over 39 storeys.

The energy in our office suggests we’re only just getting warmed up as we work hard to serve our clients through a glorious Gold Coast winter.

The size of the apartments - the largest on the market in Broadbeach, at 216m2 for a half floor and 432m2 for whole floors - holds major appeal for our city buyers and local downsizers. The lifestyle benefits of the location also suit those buyers keen on the concept of walking to the beach, cafes and restaurants, The Star Casino and Pacific Fair Shopping Centre.

That interest is predominantly focused on new and established apartments, with many looking for a lock and leave escape to test the waters with a view to relocating longer term.

While the FOMO-fuelled frenzy which drove rapid price growth during the first few months of the year has settled somewhat, demand for quality homes is yet to subside.

Recently a Melbourne-based couple approaching retirement signed an expression of interest on a half floor, three-bedroom apartment inside Infinity Broadbeach.

A three-level beachside beauty located 100m from Kirra Beach at 4 Lang Street, Bilinga was snapped up prior to auction for $3,500,000 in May.

COMMERCIAL

Hits New Heights It’s been a year since Kollosche launched its Commercial arm, led by father-son team Tony and Adam Grbcic. Tony shares the winning formula behind what has been a stellar year.

Which sector are you seeing the greatest demand? There’s a massive call for freehold properties in all sectors, including Industrial, Offices and Retail. Freehold properties are appealing for their holding income/return as well as the ability to add value and reposition in the future. Although the yields are quite tight at the moment, these only reflect the initial return. As the market for vacant possession properties has had a sharp increase, much like the residential market, it has lowered the initial return on investments. Over the next few years, as market reviews occur, the returns will become more attractive as many rentals in the current market were negotiated in uncertain market conditions. Development sites are in high demand from those looking to take advantage over the current shortage of residential unit stock. There’s a big

The Greenmount Hotel site in Coolangatta was a big campaign for us. We handled more than 160 buyer enquiries over an eight-week period. INFINITY HITS A

Sweet Spot reaking dirt is a major milestone in any B construction project, but for the developer behind Broadbeach’s Infinity tower, the buzz of activity on-site is extra sweet. Infinity is Bassar Construction Group’s debut Gold Coast project, building on a foundation of ventures in Sydney and Melbourne. “Coming from Sydney, we had a lot to learn about the local market to find our point of difference,” says Leo Sarris, who heads up Bassar alongside Simon Bassil. “Infinity has been well-received and we’re feeling confident in the market.” For Sarris, that induction involved relocating from Sydney to Broadbeach two years ago, giving him a first-hand taste of what makes the suburb such a magnet for locals and visitors alike. “In my eyes, Broadbeach is the only suburb in the country that has everything you could want in life in the one postcode,” he says. “In Sydney, you travel to get to the beach, the shops, the Casino and the nightlife. Here, that’s all within walking distance. “For downsizers or ‘lock and leave’ buyers wanting that easy way of life, I think not needing to drive because everything is two minutes from your doorstep is invaluable.” Bassar engaged leading Gold Coast architects BDA Group, who designed a striking tower set to rise 39 storeys and a unique floorplan in the shape of a double infinity symbol. Whole floor apartments deliver 432m2 of luxury living area while half floor apartments measure 216m2, each with a wraparound balcony capturing enviable ocean and hinterland outlooks. “Our apartments are the best value large apartments on the market in Broadbeach,” says Sarris. “You don’t normally see a building this big with so few apartments in there. The size, the finishes and the wraparound balconies give the product an edge. “It was also important that the building be residents-only, reserved exclusively for owneroccupiers or those wanting a ‘lock and leave’ beach lifestyle.”

Imported marble, natural stone and integrated appliances deliver a premium finish while residents will enjoy use of a 20-metre north-facing pool, indoor and outdoor entertaining areas, and a stateof-the-art gymnasium. After two years of solid planning, Hutchinson Builders have started work on the 1123m2 site on the corner of Surf Parade and George Street, and a leisurely 350m from the beach.

spot for people who still want the space of a home, without the maintenance, and in a location that’s all about lifestyle.” Three and four bedroom apartments are priced between $1,381,000 and $4,420,000.

Progress on the build is backed by steady sales interest through Kollosche’s New Projects specialists, Simon Worthington, Andrew Ramsey and Odette Humphreys. The latest round of COVID restrictions in Melbourne has triggered fresh interest from Victoria while the onset of winter has given southern residents added impetus to find a home in sunny Queensland. “Enquiry is strong from interstate, but locals are also very much in the mix as they understand the value of this location,” says Kollosche’s Simon Worthington. “The strength of the Gold Coast market is encouraging locals to cash-in by trading large homes for a luxury apartment by the beach. “The size of the Infinity apartments hits that sweet

FOLLOW THAT CHEF

As Jonez on Food prepares to relocate from Sanctuary Cove to Ephraim Island, owner chef Gary Jones promises their new restaurant will be bigger and better than anything he has done before.

WORDS AND PHOTOGRAPHY MARJ OSBORNE

AT JONEZ ON FOOD there’s a whole underlying philosophy that diners would find it hard to match: a chef who has given his life to learning his craft, who cares more about pleasing his diners than the dollar value attached to a meal; someone with such an eye for detail that they choose the plate to suit each dish, one who checks what food is binned from the tables and questions why. We find all that and more on every dish prepared by Gary Jones, owner-chef of Jonez on Food. His dishes carry journeys, continents and people from throughout his career. They speak of pride in his food, of sustained commitment and a willingness to perfect his craft while still meeting the market.

From humble beginnings, Gary has risen through the ranks of culinary culture to work with some of Europe’s best-known chefs in world-class one and two Michelin star restaurants. He has cooked for royalty, and his restaurant San Lorenzo in Perth was named Gourmet Traveller’s Restaurant of the Year in 1994. “Whatever Jones cooked was bright, tasty and original – food with its own vitality,” said Stephen Downes in Advanced Australia Fare. “Gary’s food stood up on the plate, took off its clothes, and rode your tongue.” We’re talking on a Tuesday morning, a day when his restaurant doesn’t open until dinner service. However, Gary has come in at 7am, as he always does, using the time to make chocolates to serve later in the week. The Yorkshire-born son of a coal miner, Gary began his working life at 14-years-old washing up at the local pub. Food was in his blood, with both his mother and grandmother being great cooks. “I grew up with wholesome homecooked food,” Gary tells me.

“My grandmother cooked in a coal-fired oven … from rice pudding to slow-cooked stews, she could make anything. “She had no refrigerator then, no frozen or canned food. Everything was fresh,” he says. “We bought ice cream when the van came around the street and when we finally tried canned food, we thought it was a treat.” Realising that he needed a trade, Gary moved to London at 17 to complete his chef’s apprenticeship. “I was working at Claridge’s Hotel in a kitchen of 70 to 80 chefs, all arranged by hierarchy. Of course, the apprentices were on the bottom of the ladder,” he explains. “I remember one conversation I had with Dad around that time. “He said, ‘Son, how are you going with your job?’ and I said, ‘I love it.’ “He told me how lucky I was because he worked with 2000 men who didn’t enjoy their work, adding that there was no future in the mines anyway.” Gary’s dad was correct, not only about the future of coal mining in Yorkshire but also about the health impacts on miners.

Like many chefs, Gary gained his passion for food along the way. “I began to get fascinated by food when I started learning different cuts of vegetables at college,” Gary says. One of his most memorable mentors was French-born Pierre Rolland, a world class chef under whose reign the Russell Hotel, Dublin, Ireland gained its first Michelin star, JFK being among its notable guests. Rolland was old school, Gary recalls, rising through the ranks in the days when renowned chef Escoffier would come to the table to eat with the other chefs. It’s a lesson Gary carries to this day, the need for head chefs to be able to communicate with their kitchen staff, to clean their own stations at the end of service and even to be able to wash the dishes. Gary’s most seminal move, though, was going to France. His knowledge of French culinary technique and the use of quality seasonal produce would stay with him for the rest of his life. “There were so many new food flavours to experience in France. It was a culinary culture unlike any I’d seen before,” Gary says. “We would sit and taste peaches or cheese, for example, and analyse them for age and maturity. Had the peach been picked too soon? Was the stilton of a premium age?” “Steak was served medium rare, something new for me in those days. I had to grin and bear it.” While frogs’ legs, foie gras and pig’s trotters are no longer on Gary’s menu, great French culinary technique can be seen in many dishes, especially in his sauces, a dying art in Gary’s opinion. There’s souffle, chateaubriand, truffles, white asparagus and duck liver parfait albeit with Cumberland sausage, as well as scallops with black pudding, a British favourite. Looking to give their daughter a better life, Gary and his wife Belinda moved to Australia, settling in Perth where they opened San Lorenzo with partners, the first of four restaurants they have owned. Here, he says, he encountered a simpler style of cooking with an emphasis on seasonal produce. Since moving to the Gold Coast, Gary’s career has had both ups and downs. He has cooked for the King of Tonga, managing a team of 30 staff, all of whom wanted to be involved in preparing for the king’s coronation. This was followed by a return invitation for Gary to cook for the Tongan Queen Mother’s birthday feast. Finding himself unemployed at age 55, when the restaurant he worked for folded, led to him opening Jonez on Food at Sanctuary Cove ten years ago. He has built a loyal following among locals and visitors alike, with many residents regularly booking the same table week after week. “Winston Churchill kept me going in my darkest hour,” Gary tells me. “He was 65 when he took the opportunity to lead the free world. “If he could do that, then why couldn’t I keep going at 55,” he says. Always positive, Gary says he has no intention of retiring. Instead, he and Belinda have bought a restaurant site on Ephraim Island, where Jonez on Food can be found from late July 2021. As devastated as Gary’s Sanctuary Cove followers will be about his move, the chef is excited to be able to offer patrons a renewed dining experience. “I love cooking. That’s my passion, so why should I stop?” he asks. “I have gone as far as I can here [in the restaurant’s present site] but I can do better in a bigger kitchen. My finest hour is yet to come.” Many locals are sure to be swapping a golf buggy for an Uber to see what delights will be plated up at the new location.

RIDING THE SOBAH WAVE Sobah Beverages, a true social scene surfer, launches its second wave of development. WORDS MARJ OSBORNE AS ‘LOW AND NO’ alcohol drinks move into the spotlight, it says a lot about Dr Clinton and Lozen Schultz’s intuition that their product, Sobah, was already paddling the wave before the rest of Australia even saw the swell approaching. Still leading from the front, Clinton spoke to Cove about the next exciting phase of development for their company, Sobah Beverages. Sobah (ever y pun intended) is a non-alcoholic craft beer produced by the Schultz’s Queensland-based company. Founded in 2017, Sobah was named after sobriety and the local Aboriginal word for ‘place’ (bah). Literally, ‘Sobah’ could be taken to mean ‘the place of sobriety’. A Gamilaroi man, Clinton first recognised the need for a non-alcoholic beer when he himself went sober. A former chef, now a Bond University lecturer with a full-time psychology consultancy, Clinton tells us he made the decision to place honesty and accountability at the forefront of his relationships. “I wanted to be a positive role model for my children,” Clinton says.

68 covemagazine.com.au

– Issue 85

“Being a community counsellor, as well as personally, I know the problems alcohol can cause. “I also don’t like hypocrites, so it was important for me to be able to have honest encounters at home, at work and socially.” It was only when Clinton decided not to drink that he discovered a yawning gap in the beverage market, an absence of enticing nonalcoholic adult wine and beer alternatives. ‘Why not make my own?’ he thought, dipping into the home brewing knowledge he already possessed. At the time, the couple operated Clinto's Kupmurri, a food truck selling native ingredientfocused street food. It was a natural fit for them to make and sell their first Sobah beverages from their truck. Native-infused and non-alcoholic, it was the perfect drink to complement their food, at the same time smashing stereotypical images of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island peoples. Trading off the interest they had sparked with customers, Sobah gained its first big break when it launched a crowdfunding campaign on Pozible, pre-selling product to raise the capital to launch Sobah Beverages commercially in a can.

Using contract brewing at Pickled Pig Brewery in Tweed and Tribe Brewery in Goulburn, Sobah uses ethically-sourced materials, gaining unique flavours through native ingredient infusions: Lemon Aspen Pilsner infused with Far North Queensland lemon aspen, Finger Lime Cerveza featuring finger limes from south-east Queensland and Northern New South Wales; and the Pepperberry IPA which uses fruit from the native pepperberry tree. Sobah makes other seasonal products as well, such as the Davidson Plum Gluten-Free Ale which, at the time of its production, was the only non-alcoholic gluten-free beer in Australia. Recently, the demand has more than doubled annually for ‘low and no’ alcohol drinks from those who have made the decision to reduce or abstain either for a short time or for life. Their reasons may include religious beliefs, personal preferences, ability to drive and operate machinery, work commitments, pregnancy, physical intolerance and other health reasons. Sobah’s Pozible campaign, by default, provided the team with a groundswell of community support for their product, at the same time giving those supporters a sense of community by being part of a group.

ON-LINE SHOPPING NOW AVAILABLE Once more at the forefront, as they approach their ‘second wave’, the couple are returning to Pozible, this time to their equity crowdfunding platform, Birchal, to raise contributions towards the $5 million needed to establish Australia’s first non-alcoholic craft brewery. “We want to stay at the front of the market with our Burleigh brewery, establishing a ‘brew café’ that champions native foods and a training facility for young people,” Clinton says. It’s a welcome change to see a local startup company as the frontrunner in such a powerful industry. Full of both business and social enterprise intention, a percentage of Sobah Beverages’ profits is also committed to fulfilling its social responsibility, supporting the work of the Preston Campbell Foundation, The Wayne Weaver Foundation, and the Foundation for Indigenous Sustainable Health (FISH) to help support healthy living and sobriety. Perhaps Sobah’s even greater long-term effect will be the ripple of challenge to all Australians to rethink the role alcohol plays in our society. Whether it changes us or not, at least it will provide us with an alternative and, by example, the courage to stand out from the crowd.

WELL TRAVELLED

NEW EXPERIENCES A Brisbane travel company is creating unique travel experiences for people with disabilities and their families.

WHEN MANY OF US plan a holiday, our toughest decisions are about when and where to go. For people with disabilities, the complexity and difficulty in finding a holiday that is suitable for their individual needs means they often miss out on seeing places of the world most of us take for granted. This is particularly hard for people with mobility disabilities. However, people with disabilities should not be overlooked when creating travel experiences. In fact, according to the World Health Organization 2020 Disability Report, ‘almost everyone will temporarily or permanently experience disability at some point in their life’. The report also states that ’over one billion people – about 15 per cent of the global population – live with some form of disability and this number is increasing’. In an effort to assist this movement for accessible travel, Supported Travel eXperiences (STX) specialises in designing personalised holiday and travel experiences to suit the unique needs of all people with disabilities and their families. STX works with clients directly, as well as with registered NDIS service providers and plan managers, to book holidays and make travel arrangements. “The concept was formed as our team all have our own individual experiences working with people with disabilities,” explains Yann Charavel, a Director of STX. “As we had discussions and acknowledged their barriers for travel, we realised we needed a deeper focus on high-level inclusion and accessibility. “We wanted to focus on giving care, choice and creative travel experiences to all.” STX recently organised a very important trip for Samuel Thorne; a bright 15-year-old boy who contracted a neurological condition called transverse myelitis in November 2015. Due to this condition, Samuel was fully paralysed apart from a few muscles in his right foot/leg and the smallest of movement with his left ankle/foot. Samuel requires two support workers who are trained in use of the life-support ventilator and emergency treatment of the tracheostomy tube close by at all times.

72 covemagazine.com.au

– Issue 85

Despite these challenges, Samuel is setting goals and smashing them, winning the BC3 winners’ trophy at the 2020 Queensland Boccia Battle, and winning multiple academic awards at school. Wanting a night away to celebrate not only Samuel’s successes but also his 15th birthday, STX assisted the Thorne family in organising a stay at the Meriton Suites Herschel Street, Brisbane. While for most people, booking a night away is as simple as checking into a hotel last minute, incredible attention to detail had to go into finding accommodation that suited Samuel and his family’s needs. STX had to ensure the lift and door widths were suitable for Samuel’s tailor-made power wheelchair, rearrange bedroom configuration to create additional room for equipment and support workers and ensure proximity to emergency medical facilities in case Samuel required assistance. Furthermore, STX engaged a specialist equipment relocation company to pack and transport essential medical equipment to and from the hotel, as well as negotiating early check in and late checkout to facilitate the installation and disassembly of Samuel’s medical equipment. This was arranged at Samuel's home as well as the hotel and gave the family much valued additional time to enjoy their getaway, without having to consider the extensive packing time required. Here is what the Thorne family had to say. “We recently enjoyed a night away at the Meriton Suites Herschel Street, Brisbane staying on Level 73 with an impressive view. “This stay was made possible by Supported Travel eXperiences who sourced accessible accommodation and also a relocation company; Blue Lion Moving Services. “Samuel's support workers navigated their way to the Meriton to ensure he had the necessary support while away from home. “We are very grateful for the work done by Yann, Andrew and Mandi at Supported Travel eXperiences and are looking forward to the next time we can head away for a break a little further away from home.” The Thorne family is planning a trip to the Sunshine Coast in the coming months,

and working their way up to attending the National Boccia Championships in Hobart in November 2021. Eventually Samuel’s goal is to make the Paralympics in Paris in 2024. You can follow his progress at campaignforsamuel.org.au/. “Our mission is to help families such as Samuel’s achieve their dream,” says STX Director Andrew Hager. “We want to open up parts of the world they previously thought impossible to see.” If you would like to learn more about Supported Travel eXperiences, please visit their website supportedtravelx.com.au or call 07 3186 8488.

LUXURY LIVING

AS THE WEATHER COOLS DOWN, IT’S TIME TO CREATE A WARM WELCOMING HOME. WHILE SOUTH-EAST QUEENSLAND doesn’t shiver through winter as much as our southern neighbours, we still feel a definite chill in the air. This is where a snug welcoming space to while away the cooler months comes into its own. Whether you are doing a full renovation or just giving your favourite room a mini-makeover, a few simple tweaks can change the entire ambience of your home. One of the simplest ways to update a space is colour. From warm comforting hues to bright pops of colour, there is nothing that says ‘welcome home’ like adding a few pieces in your favourite tone. In fact, colour is so critical that in 2021 the experts at PANTONE have named two colours of the year instead of the usual one – PANTONE 17-5104 Ultimate Gray and PANTONE 13-0647 Illuminating (a gorgeous, sunshiney yellow).

74 covemagazine.com.au

– Issue 85

If you are looking for more inspiration, jewellike reds, green and blues can lift a room, while cool whites and neutral tones are very restful. Soft furnishings are another ideal way to add signature style and nurturing warmth to your living areas … think plush pile rugs, snuggly wool throws, cotton-rich curtains and luxe velour cushions. And for the ultimate indulgence why not purchase a statement furniture piece such as a new leather lounge, a billard table or upright piano. Of course, our temperate climate means it’s still great outside entertaining weather, so don’t neglect those exterior spaces. Imagine relaxing on a comfy chair in a sunny corner with a good book or welcoming family and friends around a brand-new outdoor dining setting.

Bigger ticket items such as window furnishings, new flooring or a kitchen renovation can also change a home, but it’s probably a good idea to engage the experts before you start any major work. With a myriad of choices on offer it’s never been easier to update your home, so this winter why not embrace your inner designer and create a space that you love?

WELCOME TO ITALY

NATUZZI ITALIA’S SPRING/SUMMER 2021 SELECTION EVOKES THE RELAXED, COMFORTABLE LIFESTYLE OF THE MEDITERRANEAN. INEXTRICABLY LINKED TO PUGLIA, where the company has had its roots since its foundation in 1959, Natuzzi Italia draws inspiration from the uniqueness of its landscapes and its culture to spread that unmistakable lifestyle around the world. Bringing the relaxed atmosphere of the Mediterranean area to homes globally, the selection for Spring/Summer 2021 confirms the choice of a design with soft, generous and comfortable lines that visually represent the region’s welcoming and elegant spirit. Perfectly combining ethics and aesthetics, style and function, colours and materials, the renowned handcrafted Made in Italy design brand offers a wide selection of signature sofas as well as furniture for the living room, dining room and bedroom, and accent lamps, accessories and furnishings. The projects of Natuzzi Italia are based on a close relationship with the designers called to collaborate on the collections. The design approach found in the company’s DNA is a fertile ground for creative ideas that arise from the immersion in a world made of organic shapes, joie de vivre, and rhythms suggested by natural cycles. The translation of the concepts into products is then carried out in collaboration with the company’s Style Centre, which, thanks to its decades of experience, gives life to creations that find their added value in fine craftsmanship and ‘Made in Italy’ know-how. Standout pieces from the Spring/Summer 2021 selection include: ARGO COLLECTION – PAOLA NAVONE It is a sort of imperfect beauty that inspires Paola Navone, a way of looking at the space with the eyes of those who love the environment that surrounds us and its ever-changing nature. Navone takes her cues from Mediterranean colours and traditions, creating a collection focusing on simplicity and details which evokes the peaceful and relaxed lifestyle of Puglia. The Argo sofa, with its generous and wide shapes, is the symbol of this way of interpreting life and the living space. Available in the two and three-seater versions, as well as in the swivel armchair, Argo is designed to be an island of comfort in the living area.

76 covemagazine.com.au

– Issue 85

From the same collection, the Sleeping Argo chaise longue is extremely comfortable both in the chaise-longue and day-bed position. BRIQ – CLAUDIO BELLINI Derived from the English word ‘brick’, the essential design of the BRIQ bed finds the right balance in the generous headboard that is softly padded and marked by simple and rigorous vertical seams that give dynamism to the project. Made up of many soft bricks on which to recline, the headboard is completely upholstered and finished on the back to allow you to position the bed in the centre of the room. Available in fabric or leather, BRIQ is offered in 4 sizes to meet all space and living needs. There is also the option to order the bed with or without storage function. TIDE BOOKCASE – NIKA ZUPANC The Tide bookcase is part of the Deep collection, designed by Nika Zupanc and inspired by the beauty of the Adriatic Sea. The shapes of water are interpreted through the succession of continuous curves and circles, which eclectically transform and flow through all the objects in the collection. The result is a family of products with timeless elegance and a glamorous and cosmopolitan touch to enrich the living area. A modular piece of furniture in powder-coated metal with a light gold finish, the shelves of the bookcase follow the wavy movement typical of tides, creating a sinuous, ideal motion inside the room. The modules are available in two sizes and allow the creation of countless compositions. Natuzzi Italia’s Spring/Summer 2021 selection aims to transform domestic spaces into informal and casual places, which can accommodate the most intimate moments. Through organic and sinuous shapes, using natural and soft tones that draw inspiration from the Apulian landscape, tradition, and culture, the pieces are designed to evoke the relaxation and warmth of the Mediterranean lifestyle. BOLD LUXURY THIS RENOVATION BY WOOD MARBLE & WHITE IS THE EPITOME OF LUXURY AND OPULENCE. THE TEAM AT WOOD MARBLE & WHITE are the masters when it comes to kitchen renovation. Their highly qualified artisans pride themselves on creating beautiful, innovative and contemporary spaces, with every Wood Marble & White project having the benefit of a bespoke design service as well as a personal, in-house management team to ensure quality is upheld at every stage. The brief for this particular project was to create a kitchen that was a go-to destination for big gatherings and high traffic, while making the area feel more spacious and palatial. In order to meet the client’s request, Designer Leighton Ward has drawn on Traditional American Hamptons style, especially in the cabinetry. To take it up a notch, the team at Wood Marble & White paid homage to art deco in the profile of the display unit and the gold inlay surrounding the benchtop island. Prior to the redesign, the space consisted of the original cabinetry and layout which was both dated and impractical. Now, when you step inside you are instantly transported to a lavish home in the Hamptons. The first detail that catches your eye are the bold contrasts in the colour palette. The classic combination of black, white and gold work in harmony to create a luxurious experience, while the addition of marble flooring is both stylish and practical. High-end appliances including dual ovens, a side-by-side refrigerator and dishwasher allow for easy entertaining, while the large island bench is the perfect spot to prep a meal. Not only is the new kitchen beautiful to look at, but it’s also incredibly durable and easy to clean. Every detail is perfectly balanced to create a truly magnificent space, with each design element having their moment to shine. The result is a stylish, elegant and, above all, user-friendly kitchen that will meet the client’s needs for many years to come.

ART FOR EVERYONE CONTEMPORARY ART FROM EXTRAORDINARY ARTISTS AND ICONIC PHOTOGRAPHERS. ART MAKES US FEEL, it tells stories, it raises our spirit, it makes us think, it makes us laugh and, art is the key ingredient to any home. This the philosophy behind Jasmine Smith’s and Leanne Pearce’s successful foray into the art world. Over 30 years ago, the pair set out to unleash art into what can often be sterile corporate environments through their business, Corporate Art. They then moved into the curation of extraordinary artists through their gallery business, Gallery One. Housed in Southport, Gallery One has a client list that spans not just Australia, but also worldwide. Represented artists include: Kathrin Longhurst, the recent winner of the Packing Room Prize for the Archibald at the Art Gallery NSW, Mel Brigg, Dean Home, Rosetta Santucci, Richard Dunlop, Ken Done and David Bromley “Our artists imagination has inspired us every step of our journey,” said Leanne and Jasmine.

“We love art and believe it can have a profound effect on people’s lives daily.” Now the dynamic duo has established FINEPRINTCO, a premium contemporary art print company offering works from a long list of extraordinary artists and iconic photographers. “We are a team that is driven by a belief that art is for everyone, so we’re on a mission to create access to the world’s most exclusive artists and iconic photographers,” they said. “The dream now is to use our connections, knowledge and skills to further change the art game and continue to support artists by creating access to extraordinary art through fine art prints. “To help us on the journey we’ve created exclusive Partnerships with Getty Images Gallery in London to access their phenomenal archive, Snapper Images which is part of New York’s Great Bowery Inc. and the very iconic, Vogue Australia.” Iconic photographer, Slim Aarons (1916-2006), has been chosen to feature for the launch of the FINEPRINTCO store in Sanctuary Cove.

Over the course of a career lasting half a century, the American photographer portrayed high society, aristocracy, authors, artists, business icons, the celebrated and their milieu. In doing so, he captured a golden age of wealth, privilege, beauty and leisure that occurred alongside – but quite separate from – the cultural and political backdrop of the second half of the 20th Century. FINEPRINTCO welcomes you to visit the Sanctuary Cove showroom to browse the Slim Aarons Collection, as well as a selection of other extraordinary artworks.

DISCOVER YOUR COLOUR WANDER INTO WINTER WITH OZ DESIGN FURNITURE’S TWELVE COLOUR STORIES.

WHETHER YOU ARE a conservative minimalist or an eccentric individual – OZ Design Furniture are here to help you to express yourself through colour this season. While it is true that a neutral room provides a blank canvas, there is a lot to be said for inviting colour into your home. It’s time to get creative with how you introduce colour – we are talking beyond a feature wall, think statement furniture pieces, art, decor, the depth of finishes, layering tonal textures and beyond. The colour palette and final finishes of your space speak volumes in reflecting your personality in your home. Whether it’s redecorating an old space or moving into a new one, we are currently living in an era of uncertainty. Your home is your safe haven and should reflect who you are as a person. Do colour well and you’ll end up with an inviting and happy home. Rooms can be traditional or modern, formal or relaxed, and visually warm or cool-toned. Before selecting your colour palette, you have to discern how you would like to live in a given space and how you want to feel. For example, the decor of a home for those who regularly entertain and host dinner parties should be different from one for someone who enjoys wining and dining out every night. The person who loves to hold gatherings and parties should have a different living room than the person who dreams only of keeping their space to themselves. Here’s a little tip, warm colours tend to be livelier and inspire positive reactions. These colours typically work well in dining and entertaining spaces as they are inviting and promote intimacy. Cooler colours, on the other hand, are often used to bring a calmness to a space and create a relaxed mood – perfect for bedrooms. Colour can also be used to help enhance the feeling of space or make it feel smaller. Light colours tend to feel more spacious and airy than darker tones, while warm colours make a space feel smaller and cosier. Follow OZ Design Furniture’s twelve colour stories this season and you will discover a world of inspiration. Wander into their showrooms and experience the boundless collections to help you create a home that you will fall in love with more and more every day.

THANKS A

TRILLION

The rise of Australia’s property trillionaires.

WORDS NICK NICHOLS THE VALUE of Australia’s residential property market cracked $8 trillion for the first time in April this year. While there are tentative signs that price growth is starting to slow, this figure, calculated by researcher CoreLogic, lends perspective to a massive wealth shift taking place in the Australian economy. Just 10 years ago, the Aussie property market was worth a little over $4 trillion. Property owners in Australia are the richest they have ever been, with the latest CoreLogic research showing home values surging 6.8 per cent in the April quarter, the biggest quarterly jump since December 1988.

94 covemagazine.com.au

– Issue 85

“This ($8.1 trillion) puts Australian residential property at around four times the size of Australian GDP and around $1 trillion more than the combined value of the ASX, superannuation and commercial real estate stock combined,” says Eliza Owen, CoreLogic’s head of research. “The increase in the value of residential real estate has put Australian homeowners in a strong equity position, with the RBA estimating just 1.3 per cent of housing loans to be in a negative equity position at the start of 2021.” The wealth effect is illustrated in realestate. com.au research showing the percentage of Australian homes worth $1 million or more has increased sharply over the past year.

Suburbs that may not have been considered affluent are now well entrenched in the millionaire’s club. In the Gold Coast suburb of Benowa, which offers a diverse range of residences, for example, the number of houses worth more than $1 million accounted for 37.2 per cent of the market in 2020. That jumped to 52.6 per cent this year. At Tallebudgera Valley, the figure has increased from 58.2 per cent to 91.6 per cent, making it hard to find any property in the suburb offering change from $1 million. The reasons for the heady pace of property price growth nationally have been hard to fathom,

with some analysts even calling it out as a fear of missing out. On the one hand there is the demographic shift away from the cities to regional centres, but that doesn’t explain why CoreLogic finds Sydney, in conjunction with the NSW regional markets, as the best performers in terms of price growth in early 2021. Even Melbourne’s vexed inner-city unit market has seen a modest increase of 2 per cent, despite rents dropping 20.1 per cent. Queensland is notably benefiting from net interstate migration, with the December quarter showing a gain of 9,763, the best since December 2003. The rush to the regions has led to price growth of more than twice that of capital cities in the 12 months to April. Low vacancies have also seen residential rents surge almost three times the growth of capital cities, says CoreLogic. But as the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) notes, house prices overall have risen faster than rents. It’s done so despite the Australian population falling in the three months to September last

year for the first time in decades due to a lack of overseas migration. If the ANZ Bank’s assessment of the market is any guide, the year ahead will be more of the same. The bank forecasts property prices nationally will jump 17 per cent in 2021, and another 6 per cent next year. It’s worth noting that ANZ was among the doomsayers forecasting a 10 per cent price drop in 2020 as COVID-19 hit. But this again shows how divergent and uncertain forecasts have become of late. Rapid property price growth has become a global phenomenon. It’s in part led by massive government stimulus and quantitative easing by central banks which has seen a rapid recovery in the global economy. ANZ chief economist Richard Yetsenga describes it best: “One of the key reasons this recovery has been so abrupt, so compressed, is because it was a response to an almost ‘artificial’ shutdown in the first quarter of 2020, where most countries actually restricted economic activity.”

If the market is looking for a warning sign from the RBA about increasing interest rates to rein in the property market, there isn’t one yet. The RBA explained in its April minutes that while the property market was strong, the gains were modest compared with many other countries. The RBA is still waiting on wages to increase before it acts and, even then, only if it affects inflation, which means it needs to be ‘sustainably within the 2 to 3 per cent target range’. “For this to occur, wages growth would need to be materially higher than it is currently,” it says. “This would require significant gains in employment and a return to a tight labour market.” The RBA isn’t expecting this to happen until 2024 at the earliest. With that in mind, it’s a waiting game to see how far this boom can go.

2021 MARKET UPDATE WITH STEVE HUNT | MEDIAHUNT.COM.AU

The Cove, Pelican Waters

Coast

SUPER SALES

Southeast Queensland is Australia’s property ‘hotspot’.

SOME STATES may have hot spots for the wrong reasons, but Southeast Queensland is having them for the right reasons with the region proving to be the focal point of Australia’s luxury downsizer market. In my last column, I pointed to the likelihood that Brisbane would follow in the footsteps of the Gold Coast as the country’s primary luxury downsizer market – driven by incredible migration and a likely successful Olympics bid. Since then we have heard that Brisbane will become the host of the 2032 Olympics (I’m glad my intel was right) – bringing with it hundreds of billions of dollars worth of new infrastructure into the region and improving SEQ’s liveability. Like we needed to improve our liveability – we have the most enviable lifestyle in the world. In the last quarter the market has gone from red hot to white hot. There have also been clear permeations of the rising strength of Brisbane’s luxury market as the epicentre of Australia’s property boom spreads through the southeast. Brisbane developers in the know are quietly getting their projects in order with one eye on what has been happening on the Gold Coast.

96 covemagazine.com.au

– Issue 85

So, let’s deviate for a minute and provide a quick update on the latest on the Gold Coast. In what is the most successful sales campaign I have ever witnessed on the Gold Coast since arriving in 1988, Sydney-based Sammut Group has blown away the market with the incredible sales in three weeks in its debut Coast project at Northcliffe. On May 21, Sammut Group lodged a development application for the 43 ultra-luxury apartments with no idea that a tsunami of inquiries would result in prospects laying down $50,000 cash deposits to secure the apartment of their choice. The result is $110 million in sales at an average price of $4.6 million – the quickest sales campaign ever on the Gold Coast at that price bracket. Sammut Group’s project is the bellwether of the scintillating Gold Coast beachfront downsizer market. It is the perfect storm that has people flocking to Queensland from Victoria and NSW to get on with their lives, cashing in their chips and moving to the place which pretty much has the endless summer.

As with Allen Sammut from Cronulla, many other southern developers are heading to the Gold Coast to ‘meet the market’. They include Hirsch and Faigen, a Melbourne based company with a long pedigree of property development, horse racing and wines. The company has almost sold out of its debut Hemingway project, and has two new projects in the pipeline at Mermaid Beach and Kirra. Brisbane-based Turrusi, a private company with 35 years’ experience in the development industry, has come to join the Gold Coast party, lodging plans for their tropical-luxe Broadbeach project set for Amrick Avenue. The architecturally designed tower is set to captivate the coastal market with a Zen Garden, beach showers, a surf craft room and lavish rooftop deck. Sales reinforcing my view that the Gold Coast is the hottest market in the country include S & S Projects notching a whopping $8.15 million sale for its penthouse, the highest price a penthouse has ever fetched south of Mermaid Beach on the Gold Coast according to Urbis. Sherpa Property Group headed by Christie Leet has achieved a phenomenal sell-out of both

Skye Apartments

Eve Residences

its absolute beachfront developments within a month. Perspective Two Sea sold out without launching to market, leveraging purely off the sizzling sell-out of its sister development Perspective 488 just weeks earlier. Spurred on by the momentum of three consecutive ultra-luxury sell-outs in recent months, Spyre Group has followed up with the sell-out of its latest showstopping project, Cala Dei in Coolangatta. The full floor Cala Dei penthouse sold for an astounding $7.1 million – the second highest price ever fetched by a south-Gold Coast apartment behind Awaken. One company that has become an industry leader in redefining luxury living amenities is Marquee Development Partners, which sold 65% of its stock in its One Cannes project only 10 days after launching. Its beachfront Shoreline project has only few apartments remaining. Buyers will soon be able to get their hands on Marquee’s latest product when SOL in Kirra Beach hits the market in coming weeks, delivering their signature amenity opulence

Armrick Avenue

on one of the last remaining parcels of Kirra headland. Quiet-achieving Gold Coast development company Homecorp Property Group, which has amassed a billion-dollar property portfolio over the last decade, is set to embark on its next high-rise apartment tower in the Broadwater’s prestigious Golden Mile. Eve Residences was launched on June 26, and will be a stunning $150 million, 25-level residents only tower fronting one of the city’s most idyllic and exclusive waterfront promenades. Further north, GH Australia has sold the entirety of its $33 million, 46-lot land estate located within the Links Hope Island Resort, emerging in perfect timing to a market seeking their slice of the premium golf and waterfront lifestyle of the Gold Coast’s booming North Shore precinct. Sharing in the northshore hype is Keylin and Kinstone Group’s Serenity 4212 project which has witnessed the bulk of its stock fly off the market within quick succession. The first release of the final stage, Serenity Reserve, has sold 50 of its 69 townhomes,

following the remarkable sell-out rates set by Serenity Green and Serenity Waters in prior months. Which brings me back to Brisbane. On the eve of the formal announcement of the Olympics, Brisbane development veteran Pedro Pikos is preparing to take the wraps off its stunning Skye apartments which will stand majestically over the Kangaroo Point cliffs with sweeping views of the CBD. Skye by Pikos will be Brisbane’s bellwether project for luxury downsizers looking for superb quality in an unrivalled location, and will usher in the next wave of high-end luxury apartments that will follow in the Gold Coast’s footsteps as the property boom spreads throughout the southeast. And finally, on the Sunshine Coast, the fourth generation Henzell family – having sold out the first stage of its $200 million Cove development at Pelican Waters – has purchased a coveted site at Caloundra in anticipation of the continued spread of this boom northward.

7 – 15 AUGUST Ekka | Royal Queensland Show

12 – 22 AUGUST Bleach* 2021

13 – 28 AUGUST FIRESIDE

The Royal Queensland Show returns to Brisbane Showgrounds in 2021. The Ekka, as it is fondly known, holds a special place in the hearts of Queenslanders and the RNA is delighted to bring the country to the city once again. There are over 300 activities throughout the grounds, including animal adventures, agriculture competitions, rides, live music, showbags, cookery and garden displays, family shopping, children entertainment, fireworks displays and much more.

This year's Bleach* Festival launches with First Light, a magical morning on the sands at Burleigh Heads as soul diva Emma Donovan sings up the sun, while the closing event sees Rick Roser and Kristian Baggerson create a powerful image with fire and candlelight on the coastline at dusk. Based on the theme ‘Listen To Your Heart’, the rest of the program is equally as exciting with delectable feasts, legendary music acts and outstanding new commissions from Queensland artists.

Vibrant, loud and definitely cheeky, FIRESIDE returns to HOTA – and once again great art, food, music, and glittering winter evenings are on the menu. Across three weekends in August, you’re invited to warm up with friends, enjoy a glass (or two) of wine and a bite to eat while incredible Australian artists and performers including Ben Lee, Carlotta and Ilbijerri Theatre take centrestage. Turning up the heat with HOTA is the only way to chase your winter blues away.

LEO 24 Jul – 23 Aug

Venus and Mars will be in Leo until the end of July, followed by the sun in Leo until August 23, so you'll feel increasingly empowered and upbeat. But you may also tend towards seeing life in black and white – and could be prone to arguments and even conflict. Aim to maintain an optimistic outlook and collaborate and compromise, or this could be a feisty, frustrating time.

SAGITTARIUS 23 Nov – 22 Dec

ARIES 21 Mar – 20 Apr

VIRGO 24 Aug – 23 Sept

CAPRICORN 23 Dec – 20 Jan

Your sign's ruler Saturn will be retrograde until midOctober, giving you the chance to reconnect with yourself and your deeper values and principles. Ask yourself if you have gone off-track in any respect, as this is a good time to get back on target. Considerable financial developments will put a fresh perspective on life, so take a moment to regroup financially too.

TAURUS 21 Apr – 21 May

Get set for a change of routine such as a new work or health schedule and the chance to create more work-life balance. You'll be surprised by developments and will relish the chance to do something new. Just avoid going too far out of your depth and feeling vulnerable. Find ways to bring change into your life gently if possible. Take breaks and keep your feet on the ground.

LIBRA 24 Sept – 23 Oct

AQUARIUS 21 Jan – 19 Feb

GEMINI 22 May – 21 Jun

SCORPIO 24 Oct – 22 Nov

PISCES 20 Feb – 20 Mar

CANCER 22 Jun – 23 Jul

Your sign's ruler Jupiter will be retrograde until midOctober, making this an excellent time to regroup and to reconfigure aspects of your personal life. You may need to go over old ground or renegotiate contracts and return to an old haunt. You will also have the opportunity to sail forward into new territory, either literally or figuratively. Plan ahead for best results.

Get set for a new chapter to take effect in your personal life. If you're single and wish to commit, this could be the time you meet someone new. You may see a turning point in a creative project or at home. It's a good time to look at life from 'outside the box' and consider how you could bring more healing and balance into it. You may re-think some of your commitments too.

Two full moons in your sign over the next two months (on July 24 and August 22) signal the culmination of much hard work and the beginning of a fresh cycle in your personal life. With Saturn retrograde in Aquarius, life could present a difficult learning curve, and yet with diligence and an inspired approach, you will seize wonderful new opportunities and turn a corner.

Get set to turn a corner in significant relationships. Developments will ask that you see your status and direction in a new light and to find ways to make progress at home, even if you feel things are stuck – or even going backwards. You may see a change in a work project and regarding travel and legal matters. A healing approach to yourself and others will work wonders.
