IT’S BOAT SHOW TIME AGAIN. This is always exciting for us as not only do we get to promote the globally renowned Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show, we also celebrate the anniversary of the very first edition of the magazine … that was 15 years ago now and we are still setting the benchmark in quality, design and market reach. Speaking of benchmarks (and Boat Show), the first of our two City Icons in this issue is Sanctuary Cove stalwart Barry Jenkins. Barry is very well regarded within the marine industry but did you know he is also an accomplished piano player and was once in charge of serving dinner to the Queen? You can read all about his long and interesting career on page 30. Our second Icon is local businessman and self-confessed Chief Encouragement Office for the Gold Coast Vinnies CEO Sleepout, Colin Wheeler. Colin has been involved with this worthwhile charity for many years and is asking for the community’s help in supporting the 2022 event. The iconic profiles continue with our feature interviewee, Jennifer Lopez. The all singing, all acting performer shares some fascinating insights into her

Marry Me has some really unforgettable songs … do you have a favourite one and why? It's hard. I mean I can’t choose the one right off the top of my head. I love them all so much. Love Of My Life, After Love, Marry Me. I mean all of them. But I think On My Way for me is such a life song. It's like one of those perfect sentiments in a song. Yes, it fit well in the movie, but I just thought it was a song that everybody could relate to, because we all feel the mistakes we make in our lives. And it is really so hopeful because it says that every single mistake that I made was leading me down a yellow brick road to exactly where I needed to be and where I wanted to be. I do believe in that in life and so I would have to say if I had to think of a favourite child which I would never do, it would be On My Way. >>

In your new film Marry Me your character decides to change her life and marry a stranger … why? In my eyes Kat Valdez is a kind of very selfassured recording artist, a veteran in the industry who has built herself into something in her life, into something that she's proud of. But, also, in a way she becomes a bit unsatisfied because of her personal life. I think for her there's a beautiful journey here once Owen Wilson comes into her life. I mean the character that Owen plays – Charlie – comes into her life. And this really changes forever her perspective, changes her ideas of being caught. Sometimes you feel kind of like ‘I'm trapped in this frame, I'm trapped in this life. This is all I can do and I really don't get to have a life like everybody else or love like everybody else’. And I think what Owen’s character teaches her is that she can. That it is possible and that there is hope for her, and she could have a real love and a real home, that she's never had.
Calypso – Resort & Swimwear
JENNIFER LOPEZ’S recently released Marry Me with Owen Wilson is the first movie in which her two talents, acting and singing, are combined. Here J.Lo gives us more insights into her character, her music and the pressure of social media. And, of course, she talks fashion and rom-coms – her favourite movies.

WORDS PETE CARROLL / THE INTERVIEW PEOPLE
FEATURE
Music is the key element of this movie. How was the experience of making an album and a movie at the same time? That was a first time for me, and this was such a pleasure, that my two worlds were coming together. Making an album, it was great because they really allowed me to input where and when and what these musical moments would be for this character. They really looked to me and we discussed how we could make this film real. And actually picking the music for the part of the characters was important because there's nobody who understood the character more than I did and nobody who understood how it was to be kind of a musical artist and be this person within this movie. So, picking the songs for the moments was such a pleasure for me. You're so multi-talented … what is something you can't do? It's so much I can't do. We've not even got enough time for the first option but I do feel very lucky to be able to do all the things that I do.
26 covemagazine.com.au
– Issue 90
But there's definitely a lot of things I cannot do. I always say this at basketball (laughing).
“When I was younger, I was a little bit more insecure and kind of finding my way. It's great to be at a point in my life where I feel that I really know myself and I trust myself.” – Jennifer Lopez I feel like I'm at a point in my career where I'm kind of hitting my stride. I know my abilities. I feel confident now. When I was younger, I was a little bit more insecure and kind of finding my way. It's great to be at a point in my life where I feel that I really know myself and I trust myself.
Speaking of the character, how much of Kat is in you and how much of you is in Kat? I think there's a lot of us in each other. This wasn't a role where I had to research what it was like to be a famous recording artist who does branding and who has all of it … I understand all of that already. I think the difficult part was kind of a mega part which was the idea of showing what it's really like inside my bedroom when something goes wrong and you suffer a heartbreak in front of the whole world. The media kind of goes to town on you to unearth the story and understand it and almost make fun of it. And there was a lot of moments there where I was able to bring the truth to the character that was really authentic and real. You’ve starred in some memorable romantic comedies. Do you have a special place in your heart for the genre? Yes, I do and I think that's why I've done so many of them throughout my career. >>
FEATURE It's because I as a moviegoer love romantic comedies, those are some of my favourite movies of all time. When Harry Met Sally or Prelude to a Kiss or any of other movies with Meg Ryan or Julia Roberts – these are the movies I grew up on in a way and I love them so much. And, yes, it is kind of homecoming for me because I haven't done one in a few years and this year I'll have two of them coming out. This one – Marry Me – and then Shotgun Wedding will be out at some point. I did it with Josh Duhamel. So, I'm excited to be able to do a couple for sure, I love it.
Is there a certain element in a romantic comedy script that makes you say ‘I want to do this’? Specifically? I don’t know. I think it's hard to reinvent it every time. How do you make it different? We kind of always know that two people are going to wind up together and that's going to be the end of the story. So, what is really interesting is the journey and the interaction between the two characters – if that's written well that's what makes me want to do it. The movie has amazing fashion … do you have a favourite outfit in it? Oh my God! Again! There were so many great outfits in that movie. Let me just think for a second because I haven't seen it in a few months … Obviously, the wedding dress by Zuhair Mourad. It was a knockout. Maybe very uncomfortable to wear for the four days that we shot … it was so tight on me. I loved the Lapointe outfit, kind of coral coloured pants and sweater and cap. I wore it performing On My Way. I thought that was a beautiful setting and kind of a moment in the movie where she comes into her own with the music and has written a song from this journey that she had into her real life. And you really feel her power of arriving somewhere new in her life because of this love that she has for this person. The pressure of social media is important in the film … Right, that's a very real thing today. It used to be just a tabloid or the press and now it's social media as well which can be even more anxiety provoking for people in the public eye. I think that's what's also makes this movie a little bit more modern is that you have that element in it. What’s it like to have a heartbreak and a huge embarrassment in front of the world now? Now it travels so quickly. The story is going come out. Somebody’s going to see it, they're going to get it on camera, they're going to talk about it, they're going to share it. Navigating that as a person in the public eye can be tricky, especially when difficult things happen in your life like Kat suffers in the beginning of this movie, which I don't wish on anybody.

MISTER BOAT SHOW
Entertainer, event organiser, Boat Show entrepreneur … Barry Jenkins has done it all over his long and varied career. WORDS RHONDA OXNAM
MOST PEOPLE HAVE A TALE or two to tell, however, when you have lived a life as interesting and diverse as Sanctuary Cove stalwart Barry Jenkins, you literally have enough to fill a book. The stories come thick and fast during our two-hour interview as we cover everything from his childhood in Brisbane to his years at the helm of the Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show and everything in between. While I don’t have room to share all of them let’s start, if not at the very beginning, with his early years when he interrupted a fitting and turning apprenticeship to pursue a career in the Merchant Navy with the Adelaide Steamship Company. “Unfortunately, because of an accident at sea, my deck officer apprenticeship was terminated after three years and a return to land was ordered by medicos,” Barry recalls. So he came back to Brisbane to complete his original Engineering Fitting and Turning Diploma, working as an engraver by day, while also playing piano at the city’s first international standard restaurant, the Camelia Restaurant, in the evenings on weekends.

– Issue 90
Then came a pivotal point in his career. “Stewart’s Criterion Hotel had undergone a major renovation and our company, Engraving Unlimited, won the contract to supply all the signage,” Barry recalls. “While installing the last sign of the project in the Hour Glass Bar I overheard the maître d'hôtel mention that they were urgently looking for a pianist to play at an event that evening. “From my position at the top of the ladder I said I could do it, and after much discussion I was reluctantly given the job. “I didn’t have time to go home and get changed so I ended up in a very dark corner of the room, playing with my white overalls done up to the neck, wearing a black bow tie and a red waiter’s jacket over the top, hoping nobody could see me.” After this inauspicious start, he went on to establish BarryJ Entertainment, providing entertainment for Stewarts Hotels and a number of venues in Brisbane, on the Gold and Sunshine Coasts and in Japan. Fast forward a few years and Barry and his partner are running Caballo Riding and Saddlery Centre on the Sunshine Coast.
During their regular trips to Brisbane, the pair often had dinner at the iconic Oriental Restaurant in The Valley which was operated by Judy Lee, a former Miss Australia, and her husband Albert. Having decided he would quite like to learn the role of front of house manager, Barry had a conversation with the proprietors and Judy agreed to show him the ropes. “On my first night, I turned up smartly dressed, ready to greet patrons, only to learn I would be literally starting at the bottom,” Barry explains. “Judy said, ‘no, no, no, you don’t start on the floor, don’t be ridiculous, come with me’. “She took me down to the basement and right at the very back there was room full of wine and you have never seen a bigger mess in your life. “She said, ‘your job is to clean this all out, learn about the wine that is here and catalogue it all’. “Once I got my head around that, Albert took me into the kitchen and taught me the basics of Chinese cooking. “And then they turned me loose on the floor.” On his very first night, Barry proceeded to spill six bottles of Crown Lager into the lap of a very
important customer, however, he quickly learned the trade and forged a career in the hospitality industry, eventually returning to Stewarts Hotels where he had a brush with royalty. “Stewart’s won the contract for the catering at the 1982 Commonwealth Games in Brisbane and I was placed in charge of the Viceregal Dining Room at the main venue hosting Her Majesty Queensland Elizabeth II, His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh, The Honorable Malcolm Fraser Prime Minister of Australia and other dignitaries. “I was also engaged by Stewarts to oversee the catering and service at the official opening of the Brisbane Cultural Centre by Her Majesty the Queen.” Not long after, in 1983, fate led Barry down the M1 to the Gold Coast where he joined the original Fisherman’s Wharf as Entertainment Manager. “They were great years,” Barry recalls. “The venue was very successful from day one and on the weekend you couldn’t move in ‘Fishies’ … it was the place to be.” When Sanctuary Cove opened with much fanfare in 1988, there were a few teething problems with Waves Restaurant, so Barry was asked to take on the role of Assistant Restaurant Manager. This was to be ‘only for a month, mate’ but Assistant Manager became Manager and soon
after he was appointed Food and Beverage Manager for all the Sanctuary Cove operated venues on site as well as Entertainment and Promotion Manager, which included developing a program to entertain visitors to the resort during the six-month Brisbane World Expo period. 1988 also saw the very first boat show held in the Sanctuary Cove marina during The Ultimate Event. Over the years, Barry has witnessed first-hand as the show has morphed into the very successful Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show, now affectionately referred to as SCIBS. “The Boat Show was a great promotional vehicle for Sanctuary Cove but it was always about the boating industry … and that industry was … and still is … all about personal relationships. “When we decided to get serious about promoting the Show, it was agreed that we could start some moderate international promotional activity. “Our initial foray was the very first Singapore Boat Show,” Barry remembers. “It was agreed that myself and our Corporate Communications Manager Kate Duryea would go up there and bang the drum for the Gold Coast, Queensland and Australia. “About two hours out of Singapore, just as they were wheeling out the food trolleys, the plane hit clear air and just fell out of the sky.
“One of the trolleys went up and broke an overhead locker, food was strewn everywhere, not to mention a few people were quite seriously injured. “When we landed, we weren’t allowed off the plane till we’d been assessed by the medical staff. "That was our first introduction to international promotion, but we were able to generate a lot of interest at the Singapore event which resulted in international visitors to the show at Sanctuary Cove.” Since then, Barry’s involvement and influence on the boating industry has become legendary. Not only was he the General Manager of SCIBS for 25 years, he is Past President of the Boating Industry Association of Queensland, Past President of the Australian Marine Industries Federation and the Founding Chairman of Super Yacht Base Australia – now SuperYacht Australia. For many years he was also a director of the Australian International Marine Export Group and he was presented a Highly Commended Award for Export Industry Champion at the 2009 Australian Marine Industry Awards. These days, Barry is happily semi-retired, still indulging his love of piano, still keeping his finger on the pulse of the marine industry and still entertaining journalists like me. “In the very early days, when I was moved out of the factory and into the admin side of the business, I remember attending a management training course and one of the lecturers said ‘You don’t reach your business maturity, until you learn not to separate your business from your pleasure’. “I still don’t know if that’s right or wrong, but for me, everything has revolved around the entertainment, hospitality and marine industries and I have enjoyed that more than words can express.”

SLEEPOUT SHOUTOUT Vinnies CEO Sleepout Ambassador Colin Wheeler is calling on his fellow Gold Coasters to support this worthy cause. WORDS RHONDA OXNAM COLIN WHEELER is a man on a mission. A s t he self- confessed CEO (Chief Encouragement Officer) of the Gold Coast’s Vinnies CEO Sleepout, he is urging locals to get behind this worthy cause, either by taking part in the actual sleepout or donating funds to support those who are doing so. “I’ve been involved in the Sleepout for many years and I am so proud of the money we have raised and the good we have done in the community,” Colin says. “Since 2015, we’ve raised $2,528,332 and every dollar, apart from the event security and cleaning costs, stays on the Coast.”
Drawing on his business contacts as CEO of Document Solutions Australia Pty Limited, Colin has been able to help grow the annual event into one of the Coast’s biggest single fundraisers. “I know quite a few people at the big end of town and feel very comfortable talking to them knowing that I’m not selling them a photocopier, I’m selling them a sleepout,” he says. “When I’m talking to people about participating in the event, the first thing I am asked in many cases is ‘why should I help? “In reality, 60 per cent of homeless are either victims of domestic violence, they have mental health issues or they are kids under 18 – and none of them choose to live that way. "While you do get the homeless who are violent or involved with drink and drugs, they aren’t necessarily the people that Vinnies help. “Vinnies help the people that lose their jobs or can’t pay their rent and end up living in cars or on the street.” In fact, that was one of Colin’s first experiences with homelessness. “I was walking back to my lovely apartment in Main Beach, and there was a Commodore wagon with the door open at 10 o’clock at night,” he recalls. “As I approached, I saw a mum putting two young children to sleep in the back, then she got in the front and put the seat down for herself.
“I spoke to Wendy Coe who used to run Rosies about it and she said that quite often in domestic violence cases, they grab the kids, they grab the car keys and then they have nowhere else to go but on the streets.” Today, the fastest- growing group of homeless people or about to be homeless, are women over 55, who are divorced or domestic violence victims. Often they don't have any savings or superannuation and, basically, have very little money to live on. This is where the Gold Coast Vinnies CEO Sleepout comes in. "The key for the funds we raise is that it goes directly into housing," Colin explains. “The first money we spent was on a building in Hicks St Southport for the Cornerstone Program, which is the early intervention and prevention of homelessness. “They quickly outgrew the premises, so it was sold and the money was used to convert an existing building at Arundel into six apartments for women over 55, which opened in July 2020.” Another critical project is based in two buildings in Railway St, Southport. “One has been converted into a big Vinnies store, and the other one has become The Hub, which is the first of its kind in Queensland.
Vinnies CEO Sleepout Gold Coast Date: Thursday 23 June 2022 at 5.30 pm Location: CBUS Super Stadium, Centrelink Place, Robina Living on the Gold Coast should be paradise, but for many Queenslanders it’s the opposite. The economic downturn over the last 12 months has seen many people – including young children – sleeping rough for the first time ever. The pandemic has meant more Australians are at risk of homelessness than we’ve seen for a very long time. They need you to lead with empathy and stand up for vulnerable people who don’t otherwise have a voice. Now's your chance to support people at risk of or experiencing homelessness. Sign up to your Vinnies CEO Sleepout, start raising money and help bring an end to homelessness in our city. One night of your life will be life-changing for so many. Do you have any questions? Your local event coordinator is happy to help. Phone 07 5665 3303 or email goldcoast@ceosleepout.org.au

“In there, they’ve got seven agencies providing support so if you are or are about to be homeless you can get legal advice, housing assistance, families back on track, Centrelink assistance, etc. “That is a really practical support mechanism and we contributed part of that,” Colin says proudly. But that is not the end of the vision … the next initiative is aimed at helping even more people overcome homelessness. “What we have now is very exciting,” Colin admits. “There’s a block of land in Nerang that Vinnies are in the process of purchasing. “It has a D.A. for 40 apartments but Vinnies plan to increase that to 60. “If we, through the sleepout, could get that up and running we would know we have provided a total of 66 capsules of community housing through our fundraising efforts and I think that’s terrific.” So what’s involved for someone wishing to take part in the 2022 Vinnies CEO Sleepout? What are the logistics? “We target CEOs obviously … and we do that in two ways,” Colin explains. “One is direct contact from me or my fellow Ambassadors, Karen Phillips and Jamie Preston, inviting the CEO to take part. “Or, secondly, we get in touch with someone below the CEO who would love to see them sleep out in the rough on a piece of cardboard and be uncomfortable. “Each participant has a link on the website where they can raise funds and find all the resources they need.” The 2022 event will be held at Cbus Stadium on Thursday 23 June, with those taking part allowed to bring nothing but a pillow and a sleeping bag. “We supply the cardboard, as well as some soup, a bread roll and coffee, tea and hot chocolate,” Colin says. “Everyone sleeps at the ground, exposed to the wind, and although we have a cover, it's ostensibly outside. “It’s not comfortable, I’d lie if I said it was, but we provide a programme of awareness and education, we have a guest speaker who talks about a key issue or area of homelessness, we have a Vinnies' client to share their true story, we have an auction where we offer some unique experiences.” Which brings us to the cardboard bed … “Every year, the boys here at Document Solutions make a bed out of our boxes and we auction it off,” Colin explains. “It’s actually a mattress covered in cardboard with a cardboard base, head and foot, but it does provide relative comfort for the night. “Last year it went for around $2,500, which was a great result.” With preparations well underway for the 2022 Vinnies CEO Sleepout, Colin has a very clear message for everyone regarding homelessness on the Gold Coast. “I suppose the awareness of the problem is one thing, what can you do about it is another. “I would love to see more CEOs joining us. “And if you are not a CEO or you don't want to sleep out, be sure to make a contribution to somebody who is taking part.” "You can sign up to join the 200+ Gold Coast CEOs or donate online at ceosleepout.org.au."

HOLISTIC HEALTH
Looking after your mental well-being also benefits your physical health.
WHAT DO YOU THINK of when you hear the word ‘health’? You may automatically think physical health – healthy eating and exercise. While physical health does play a considerable role in keeping our bodies functioning at an optimal level, our mental health is just as important in achieving and maintaining a healthy, happy, and successful life. Being in state of good mental health can prevent serious health conditions. A study has found that positive psychological well-being can significantly reduce one’s risk of heart attack, stroke, and chronic illness. In return, poor mental health can negatively impact your physical health. Mental health includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being and impacts how we think, feel, and behave. It also determines how we deal with stress, relate to others, and make healthy life choices.
Mental health is important at every stage of life, from childhood and adolescence through adulthood. What can you do today to improve your mental well-being? • ENGAGE IN SOCIAL INTERACTION. Connecting with people who you have meaningful relationships with can help build a sense of belonging, self-worth and promote the creation of positive experiences. Building connections with others provides us with the opportunity to give and receive emotional support and further strengthens emotional bonds. To enhance your social interactions make use of technology by face-timing friends or family that may live interstate or overseas, schedule an outing with friends, practice active listening, show genuine interest in others, ask meaningful questions and step outside your comfort zone when meeting new people. • BE PHYSICALLY ACTIVE. Evidence shows that chemical changes occur in the brain when we exercise which helps to positively change our mood. Exercise promotes goal setting and creates a sense of achievement when we reach those goals. To get more active join a local exercise group, go for a walk, seek the services of a personal trainer or exercise physiologist, try a new class at the gym and engage in forms of exercise that you enjoy ... this will help you to be consistent. • GIVE BACK. When we give to others, we experience positive feelings and a sense of reward. In addition to this, it strengthens our connections with others. This could be in the form of small acts of kindness, volunteering within your local community, or donating to a cause that is close to your heart. • BE PRESENT IN THE MOMENT. By being present in your thoughts, feelings, and the world around you, you engage in mindfulness. Mindfulness can create a greater sense of enjoyment in life while helping you to understand yourself better, change your world view and the way in which you approach challenges. Mindfulness can be achieved through practicing meditation and breathwork. • SEEK ADVICE FROM COUNSELLOR. A counsellor is a trained, objective professional with whom you can build a healing and trusting relationship with. Counsellors can assist you in the process of talking about and working through your personal

challenges and addressing them in a positive way, helping you to clarify issues, explore options, develop strategies, and increase self-awareness. Anyone who is struggling with a personal concern can seek counselling. No issue is too big or too small to ask for support. Common issues that people seek support for include communication and relationship issues, grief, loss, separation, life transitions, for example the death of a loved one, work and career issues, anxiety, stress, depression, parenting, addiction, abuse, trauma, and self-esteem difficulties. Fel Zsha from Mindology counselling believes in a relational, strengths-based approach to therapy. She has a particular interest in working with survivors of all forms of trauma, including witnessing or experiencing violence, complicated grief, abuse, or spiritual trauma. “At Mindology counselling we provide confidential support,” Fel explains. “This means that everything you discuss with the counsellor is private. “We can also work in partnership with health professionals upon request to give comprehensive, personally tailored, and integrated care with private health care rebates available. Fel is a registered Counsellor with the Australian Counselling Association. She has a Degree in Social Science and Counselling and is currently in the process of completing her Masters in Neuroscience. “I provide tangible advice with a compassionate approach to best help you succeed in your therapy goals,” she says. “In the midst of the serious work of therapy, I seek to find hope, joy, and humour and a renewed enthusiasm for life. “I utilise mindfulness, cognitive-behavioural approaches as well as acceptance and commitment therapy. “I also encourage my clients to pursue a holistic approach to health, incorporating exercise, proper sleep and nutrition, spiritual practices, nurturing relationships, and enjoyable activities.” Sessions can be facilitated face to face at Elite Med Sanctuary Cove or via Telehealth to suit your needs and schedules. DENTAL EXPERTS
Dr Bryan Bluhm joins the team at GC Dental Solutions.
OFFERING QUALITY DENTISTRY from their stateof-the-art, purpose-built facility in Helensvale, GC Dental Solutions (GCDS) recently welcomed Dr Bryan Bluhm to the practice. Originally from Newcastle, NSW, Dr Bluhm completed his trade as an electrician, before making the switch to Dentistry. “I had always been interested in healthcare and the blend of health and hand skills made Dentistry the perfect fit for me,” he explains. “I’ve been practising Dentistry for many years now and have found a unique interest in Invisalign (invisible braces) and cosmetic dentistry (veneers). "Through the conjunction of both I’m able to provide my patients with a beautiful smile that is always achieved conservatively (without too much drilling). “I am now entering my second month with this practice, consider myself a Gold Coast local, and look forward to building long-term relationships with my future patients.” The team at GCDS strive to be at the forefront of dentistry, and this means always keeping upto-date with the latest technology. “We’ve been able to embrace this approach through our iTero 3D scanner, a device that only 15 per cent of dentists in Australia have access to,” explains Bryan. “Identical to cutting-edge medical technology, 3D images are captured of our patients’ teeth that are then 3D printed by our lab, upon which, medical devices such as Invisalign retainers, dental crowns and implants may be constructed. “To the great benefit of our patients, this eliminates the need for ‘gooey’ physical moulds of teeth (impressions), giving a far more comfortable experience, and a quicker appointment.” The GCDS practice also offers a range of Invisalign and cosmetic procedures. “Over the past few years I’ve noticed that several people have come in asking for veneers, not fully understanding what cosmetic dental treatment entails nor the options available to them. “This leads to a lot of confusion amongst my patients, who believe they need to follow celebrity trends on social media of cutting healthy teeth to achieve a highly aesthetic smile, which is in fact, rarely the case. “While yes, veneers can be one solution, contemporary dentistry allows us to provide discreet tooth alignment that is more acceptable to adults of all ages through Invisalign clear aligners, rather than metal ‘train-track braces’.”
44 covemagazine.com.au
– Issue 90
This approach, combined with teeth whitening and/or composite edge bonding, allows a more conservative approach to cosmetic treatments, sometimes eliminating the need for veneers entirely. However, in some cases, where teeth are severely discoloured or crooked, having a short course of Invisalign treatment again allows a conservative approach whereby fewer teeth, and less of the teeth themselves, need be drilled as the teeth will be in a far better placement. Although conservative approaches have their place, for those patients wanting more immediate results, without the delay of Invisalign, GCDS offer hand-layered bespoke porcelain veneers crafted by their master dental ceramist. Patients can rest assured that these minimally invasive cosmetic treatments rarely require needles. According to Dr Bluhm, another area of concern for many patients is missing teeth and implants. “Ever since dental school I’ve noticed people with missing teeth, and not uncommonly, the general public notices this as well. “It’s unfortunate that I have encountered a great many patients who have chosen to remove their teeth when they became infected as it was more often than not, a cheaper financial decision.
“What they weren’t made aware of at the time is the increased, and often damaging, forces placed on the remaining teeth, and that over the coming years the teeth adjacent to the removed teeth will drift, rotate, and move, increasing the risk for gum disease.” Previously, the dental profession dealt with these issues using the inconvenience of false teeth (that have to be removed and cleaned daily) or dental bridges that attached to the adjacent teeth, which unfortunately meant that if anything went wrong with either of the adjacent teeth, the entire bridge was compromised, effectively becoming a 3-tooth problem. Modern dentistry provides the option of dental implants as tooth replacements, an option that is fixed in place (doesn’t require removal for cleaning), as our natural teeth are, and doesn’t involve the adjacent teeth unlike a dental bridge. “Where our patients have lost their natural teeth, our experienced surgeon, Dr Sempf, can place a dental implant and in as little as three months, following healing, an implant crown (tooth) can be placed, restoring chewing function, balancing damaging forces and greatly reducing risk for gum disease,” Bryan says.

DINING MECCA WORDS MARJ OSBORNE FROM A QUICK LUNCH of dumplings at Mei Wei, coffee and cake at M & G Bar or a family celebration at Harvest Buffet, through to a three-course meal at one of the complex’s award-winning restaurants, The Star Gold Coast offers dining experiences to suit every occasion.
Uncle Su
The Star Gold Coast’s flagship Cantonese restaurant, Uncle Su, is located at the entryway to The Dorsett Gold Coast Hotel. With sumptuous décor and beautifully appointed private dining rooms, the restaurant’s name is inspired by the respected term of ‘Uncle’ in Chinese tradition, extending to guests an invitation to dine at Chef Song’s own family table. Fun, vibrant, and embracing the spirit of family, Uncle Su offers classic Cantonese cuisine with a selection of signature Beijing and Szechuan dishes, created with local Australian ingredients from our seaside locale. Executive Chef Song Yao Su has worked in some of the world’s finest restaurants, including
Kiyomi
There are few restaurants on the Gold Coast more lauded than Kiyomi at The Star, for good reason. Kiyomi is important for what it achieves: the finesse of traditional Japanese cuisine brought to new life by Executive Chef Chase Kojima’s modern menu. Kiyomi’s name itself (a rare Japanese citrus fruit) is our first clue to intent, reminding us of the balance which is an integral part of Japanese-inspired cuisine. Our second clue lies in its décor. With its muted buff tones, the privacy of booth seating, Japanese murals and layered wood features, Kiyomi references traditional Japanese dining culture.
Yet it’s overtly modern as well, with a fabulous cocktail bar on entry, moody lighting and the fluorescent UV-lit artwork of Japanese street artist Houxo Que. In Kiyomi, it is the balance between old and new, the visionary translation of tradition into modernity that achieves greatness. Mouth-watering sashimi sit side by side with indulgent seared scampi served with foie gras and tart apple, while freshly shaken cocktails counter the richness of toothfish. It’s an intriguing balance, a perfectly elegant mix of East and West on a plate.
Cucina Vivo
Inspired by the cliff-top restaurants along the Amalfi Coast, Cucina Vivo looks across the hotel’s pool to the lights of the Gold Coast. Fresh and bright, there’s a distinct seaside feel to the spacious 250-seat venue, a breath of fresh air and a flood of natural light. In Cucina Vivo, the huge imported pizza oven which forms the centrepiece of the décor, action and cuisine of this kitchen is the restaurant’s fiery, beating heart. It’s the tool which cooks not only the pizzas but also the seafood and meat for the restaurant’s dishes, leaving in its wake the lingering textured flavours of wood smoke.

at The Mansions, Las Vegas, where he honed his skills working with revered Hong Kong chef Pui Wing Hui. Chef Song’s delicious menu brings together his heritage and experience, featuring secret family recipes and signature dishes. It incorporates an abundance of live sustainably sourced seafood, handmade dim sum, an extensive tea menu, and Chef Song’s specialty Peking duck that is carved at the table. “Uncle Su is a restaurant for any occasion, to be enjoyed by family and friends of all generations; a place of warmth and laughter, good times and even better food,” says The Star Gold Coast’s COO, Jessica Mellor.
Italian food comes from the generosity of spirit that has flowed through generations of cooks; handmade favourites that each family makes in their own way, inspiring new classics. Dishes roll out in a neat procession from the kitchen: platters laden with beautifully arranged antipasti, steaming pots of mussels, pizza dotted with prosciutto San Daniele and rocket, and ribbons of pasta laden with seafood still smoky from the pizza oven. They’re rustic dishes to share, hands in, chins dripping, deliciously similar to the way they’ve been cooked for centuries.
Nineteen at The Star
A stunning rooftop restaurant and lounge bar, Nineteen at The Star offers sweeping views of the Gold Coast skyline from its position on the nineteenth floor. Just as Nineteen at the Star’s décor takes its inspiration from the surrounding landscape, its hues of powder green from the forest, the teal blue ocean and gold glimmers of sun skimming over the water to cream sandy shores, so the menu reflects not only the Gold Coast landscape but also the journey and background of Chef Uday Huja. An internationally renowned chef who has catered for presidents and princes, identities and film stars, Chef Uday’s pinnacle experience as a first generation American was cooking for the first White House State Dinner for newly elected President Barack Obama. On his signature a la carte and set menus, Chef Uday’s culinary philosophy is: ‘Great ingredients simply prepared with finesse’. To him, the best produce is the driver, his special love being great Australian produce. “Each dish has one main voice, that is the natural attributes of the main ingredient. All the other ingredients are supporting players,” he says as he visits our table. “A great restaurant is about a complete dining experience, above and beyond just the food. “It has to be an experience, a relationship with the guest, a personalised touch.”

WINE CELLAR
TAKE ME TO THE RIVERLAND
Ricca Terra Farms are blazing new trails in the Riverland wine region. WORDS TONY HARPER
HOW CAN I DESCRIBE Ashley Ratcliff to readers who have never met him? I’ll no doubt fail abysmally, but here’s an attempt. Ashley is a youthful 40-something-ish; down to earth but clever; gregarious, but in a measured, gentle kind of way; thoughtful, upbeat, energetic and – so it seems – ready to challenge conventional wisdom. Which is what he and wife Holly have done with Ricca Terra Farms: they have made the Riverland sexy. Not so long ago that would have seemed an impossible task. Winding back the clock only a decade or so, Riverland wine was the polar opposite of sexy. Despite the fact that it is our country’s largest wine region – in terms of geographical plantings, production and number of makers – it has empirically been focussed on the low end of the market. High volume brands at low cost. And it has done its job well, punching out heaps of tasty (but generally uninspiring) wine into the Australian and overseas markets. But because it is hard to craft Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon and even Shiraz into something special when they are grown in a place as warm as the Riverland, there was very little scope for Riverland wines to rock the conventional boat. Too arid, too hot. Ricca Terra has changed that focus, with an ever-evolving collection of wines that rely less and less on the classic French varieties; more and more on the lesser-known grapes of Italy, Spain and Portugal. And Ashley has altered his land management to use less irrigation, improve his soils and –in the process – makes his vines happier. In retrospect (like so many things) it seems obvious.
52 covemagazine.com.au
– Issue 90
It makes sense to plant varieties that are suited to the conditions, rather than stuffing conventional varieties into a hole they don’t fit. But it takes both intellect and courage to take that step; to trailblaze. And viticulture is very different from growing cabbages or potatoes, making beer or crafting chocolates; it takes years of effort and expense to establish a vineyard and get the vines mature enough to gain a meaningful harvest. And then … it’s a once a year harvest … so winegrowers don’t have the luxury of brewers, for example, who can trial a new beer recipe every month, week, day, until they get it right. For winegrowers … it’s annual. Will the public want a Riverland Fiano, or is that a ludicrous idea? But in a relatively short time, Ricca Terra has succeeded brilliantly at convincing us that, given the right grapes and a caretaker who understands his vines and land, the Riverland can make wines that are not only tasty, and interesting … but also meaningful. Bullets Before Cannonballs for example; my favourite of the whole Ricca Terra family. It’s a red based on Tempranillo (Spanish), Shiraz, Lagrein (northern Italy) and Lambrusco (also Italian, but perhaps not what you think), morphed into a bright, juicy, savoury-meetssucculent delicious thing. It doesn’t fall down the Beaujolais/Gamay/hipsterred rabbit-hole of juicy fruit and no backbone. This has backbone … and oodles of flavour. There’s Ricca Terra ‘Arinto’ (a well known variety in Portugal, but just a newcomer to Australia), fermented and aged in seasoned barrels. It’s a grape that loves heat, thrives on it, retaining freshness and acidity in conditions that would make Chardonnay melt.
There are maybe half a dozen Australian producers playing with the variety, and the Ricca Terra version, at least in my experience, is by far the best: bright, textural, hints of herb, hints of lemon, but medium-weight rather than lean. Delicious. I picture it with a plate of grilled sardines, a bowl of mussels perhaps … something sea-foody. And ‘Juicy June’, the Ricca Terra play on Beaujolais and the light, bright almost-reds that are currently so popular. But rather than Gamay, Ricca Terra makes the wine from Negroamaro (indigenous to southern Italy) and Grenache (southern France). Juicy June is light in colour, she is as juicy as her name would lead you to believe, she is crunchy, fresh and bouncy, she is simply delicious. The Ricca Terra story isn’t confined to the Ricca Terra brand. Plenty of grapes from the vineyards are sold to other producers and appear in some wellknown bottles. And Ricca Terra has a couple of sibling brands – 22o Halo that sits as a kind of gobetween for people new to emerging varieties, and Terra do Rio, which is dedicated to Portuguese varieties. Let’s leave Ricca Terra for a moment, and fastforward to 2050. It’s less than 30 years from now, and a year by when our politicians will need to have made good on their emissions policies. Me … I don’t think it’s anywhere near soon enough or radical enough to save our species and our planet in the long term. But that’s another story. For now, let’s just imagine the global viticultural landscape. We are close to two degrees warmer across the planet.
Our polar caps have diminished, exacerbating the problem. The Champagne region is too warm to make that wonderful, bubbly wine that created and kept its fame for nearly three centuries. Tasmania is producing delicious Shiraz, just like the Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale once did, until they became too hot. They are now growing Nero d’Avola. England is the new Champagne (just too wet to do it gracefully), Chablis is the new Burgundy, and Burgundy is growing Grenache. So … let's thank Ashley and all the like-minded people that decided Australia could benefit from looking ahead, and looking abroad to what varieties can cope best with our arid, warm climate, and the challenges that the following 28 years will bring. Is it the answer? Not for global warming. But if, in your dotage, you would like a glass of Australian wine that has panache, I reckon the likes of Ashley Ratcliff should be toasted with a glass of something unfamiliar, for now, but bound to be more familiar in an alarmingly short time.

The direct beachfront apartment was large, with a full kitchen and a view that was more spectacular than the photographs. The balcony was the perfect spot for our morning coffee and the colour of the sky at sunset was beautiful. The location is also very convenient, allowing access to the beach and restaurants from your balcony or through to Hastings Street from the front entrance. Well-appointed and providing a wide range of facilities, these apartments offer the ideal holiday accommodation for a group or family, and enjoying each other’s company around the pool or on the beach is easy. There are three barbecues, an entertainment area overlooking the heated pool and beach, spa, wading pool, airconditioned gym and games room. Lovely, grassed areas are set up with lounge seating to relax in during the day or stargaze at night.

The buzz of Hastings Street is close by with shopping and supplies on hand. The restaurants along the beachfront are amazing, with both the view and cuisine making for an unforgettable experience. We secured a booking at Sails Restaurant, a must to visit while in Noosa, where we indulged in a late lunch and chatted the afternoon away over a bottle of Pinot. They weren’t rushing us out the door and we walked, aka stumbled, away feeling very relaxed and pleasantly sated. If you’re a morning person, you’ll make plenty of friends during your stay. The beachfront comes alive early in the day with runners, walkers, and swimming groups. If you’re up for a walk through Noosa National Park in the morning you can follow the picturesque coastline to Hells Gates, a five kilometre path with stops along the way at lookouts and coves.
During our stroll, we were treated with a show of dolphins playing from the aptly named Dolphin Point. Holiday makers and locals are also out being active surfing, kayaking, and paddling a SUP at this time of day. Long lazy breakfasts are easy with plenty of dine in or take away options. We couldn’t resist grabbing an Acai bowl from Hastings Street and soaking up the sun on our deck after an early morning of adventure. The pool at Fairshore Beachfront Apartments was the place to be during the day. It is sheltered from any wind and surrounded by comfy sun lounges and umbrellas, making it the perfect spot to read a book (or your latest Cove magazine). Noosa, we’ll be back soon. Next time we’ll be taking our favourite people and staying beachfront a little longer.

SOPHISTICATING BITCOIN As Bitcoin gains popularity, how do high-value investors consider an allocation for their portfolio? WORDS MONOCHROME FOUNDER & CEO, JEFF YEW BITCOIN AND THE BROADER ‘CRYPTO’ industry have been the subject of great interest over the past decade – often polarising those who engage with it. Regardless of personal views on the digital asset class, it is gaining mainstream attention. Bitcoin also happens to be a large part of my life. I first heard about Bitcoin in 2013. By 2015, I was well invested in a journey of finding what made this magic internet money tick. Fast forward to almost 10 years later, I had made the asset class a core part of my career, having founded Binance Australia and served as the CEO for over 3 years. As I saw the industry gaining traction, I also saw a lack of options in how institutional investors could access crypto assets in a safe and compliant manner. Stepping away from the crypto exchange space, I set out to build a company that was able to meet the sophisticated needs of institutional investors in both education, product and service. This company is Monochrome Asset Management. Monochrome was founded on the belief that investors should be able to invest in Bitcoin through a regulated, safe, and secure vehicle. Today, Australian retail consumers commonly trade on crypto exchanges, which have yet to be regulated, exposing investors to its own set of risks due to the lack of traditional investor protection frameworks. The Monochrome team brings together a rich blend of traditional finance experts, coupled with

deep digital asset experience, creating a truly unique skill-set that is highly specialised and rare to come by in the market. Monochrome’s f lagship produc t , the Monochrome Bitcoin Fund, offered through a wholesale unitised vehicle, provides safe access for sophisticated investors such as high-networth individuals and family offices who want exposure to Bitcoin, but don’t have the time to engage with the complexities needed to navigate it safely themselves, or want a traditional compliant investment vehicle which fits within familiar Australian accounting and taxation frameworks. The attraction to Bitcoin for many investors is the disconnect from global interest rate cycles or underlying economic activity as it is not directly
linked to commercially driven commodity prices or central bank monetary policy. It is truly decentralised from the monetary economy which is dominated by mainstream financial institutions. The Monochrome team is also in the process of preparing to launch its own Bitcoin Exchange Traded Fund, opening the door for retail investors to dip their toe into the Bitcoin pond. ESTABLISHED IN 2021 by well-respected family lawyers Anton Richardson and Stephanie Murray, Richardson Murray is a boutique family and relationship law firm located in the heart of the Gold Coast. Richardson Murray provides private representation to individuals while offering them a shoulder to lean on through what is a sensitive and emotional journey. “Over the years we have learned that clients want a family law firm they can trust, with lawyers who are best in class and committed to excellence. “Family Law is a very specialised area of law that requires lawyers who practice exclusively in the field.

Our Seven-Figure City As data from the past year is collated and shared, a clearer picture is emerging of how unprecedented price growth has reshaped the Gold Coast property market.
G
old Coast real estate has been a standout performer in the first quarter of 2022, defying the signs of a slowdown playing out in most capital city markets. Regional Australia continues to record a substantially higher rate of growth than the capital cities over the three months to March, according to CoreLogic. Combined regional housing values increased by 5.7% – that’s more than three times the growth reported in capital cities where housing values rose by a modest 1.8%. The enduring strength of the Gold Coast’s prestige sector continues to be driven by low stock levels, buyer demand and a lust for lifestyle following two years of Covid restrictions. As market data from the previous year is collated and shared, a clearer picture is also emerging of how unprecedented price growth has shaped our local market. House values on the Gold Coast jumped around 36% in the past 12 months, and unit prices about 27%. The city’s median house value now sits at $901,750. Once considered a prestige purchase, owning a $1,000,000-plus property on the Gold Coast has become the new norm following a year of rapid property price growth. A total of 5,896 Gold Coast properties sold for $1 million or more last year, the latest CoreLogic data shows, making more homeowners real estate millionaires than ever before. To offer some context, the number of seven-figure sales almost doubled during the Covid period when compared with 3,378 during the same period the previous year. Domain’s latest House Price Report names Mermaid Beach as the second most expensive Queensland suburb –
after Sunshine Beach – following a 42.6% leap in the median house price to $2.375 million in December 2021.

The Oscar on Main Penthouse, positioned beachside at 93/1-9 Hughes Avenue, Main Beach, sold on 31 March for $6,600,000 through myself and Claire Dai. The iconic Burleigh Surf Penthouse, at 31I/238 The Esplanade, Miami sold for $5,000,000 on 21 March to a Melbourne developer who flew to the Gold Coast to seal a deal through Kollosche’s Matt Lanyon and Rob Lamb. The Aria Penthouse, offering 685m2 on Albert Avenue in Broadbeach, changed hands for $4,800,000 in an off market sale last month, handled by Nick Lapenna and myself.

P
erched high enough to lock eyes with gulls cruising the coastline, the Ultra Broadbeach Penthouse has long been among the Gold Coast’s most revered residences. Occupying levels 30 and 31 of the esteemed DBI-designed building on George Avenue, the Ultra Penthouse combines what was originally two penthouses to achieve an astounding 1,093m2 footprint that includes a private rooftop terrace. The elevation and location afford breathtaking 360-degree views – from the infinite blue of the Pacific Ocean, across the cityscape to Main River, and west where the setting sun ignites the hills of the Gold Coast Hinterland. Soaring ceilings, extensive glazing and lavish finishes deliver a sophisticated sense of style across grand living zones, five spacious bedrooms, six bathrooms and every comfort you might expect to find in a large, high end home. But for all of its impressive selling points, the Ultra Penthouse has been a much treasured home for the late owner and his Melbourne-based family, who have
enlisted Michael Kollosche to present the prestige property to market. “It was our father’s full-time home and we would all visit from Melbourne every couple of months,” says James Grege. “Home is where your parents are and we have many special memories with our family there.”

For those seeking the luxury of space, the grand sense of scale across the two-level design makes the penthouse feel every bit the supersize sky home. “There is no compromise on space in this penthouse and everything – from the living areas, to the bedrooms and bathrooms – is grand in size,” says James. “It’s like living in a house on top of a building, rather than an apartment inside a building. “Anyone looking for the best of both worlds, especially coming from Sydney or

"When we decided to sell our dream home we asked our broad network of friends and business contacts one simple question: If you were selling your home, who would you trust? The overwhelming response was: Michael Kollosche. We quickly came to realise that working with Michael isn’t one person – it’s a team of professionals, who are obsessed with outstanding service and communication. Being a riverfront acreage lifestyle resort, our home is quite unique. It was, at one stage, the third most-viewed property in Australia – that is how widespread, respected, and effective the Kollosche brand is. In only one month on the market we had numerous buyers and a frenzy of offers, resulting in a sale price greater than our advertised price. We could not be happier with the people and the process." - Angela and Dennis (Sellers)

10 Cent Tom is searching for a secure covered site between Surfers Paradise and Burleigh Heads to house up to 200 bins. “Finding a site to store these bins is the next step,” says 10 Cent Tom Charity Director Carolyn Pirie, who supports son Tom to reach his goals.
The Next Step The lovable lad behind 10 Cent Tom is taking his recycling enterprise to the next level and he needs the community's help to make it happen.
W
hat started out as a hobby for Robina teenager Tom Pirie has grown into a thriving social enterprise backed by incredible local community support. For the past two years 10 Cent Tom has been collecting cans and bottles to recycle, capturing the heart and support of the Gold Coast with his enthusiasm and determination. Tom has an intellectual impairment and was diagnosed with severe scoliosis at the age of 15 resulting in corrective surgery and steel rods placed permanently in his back. However, that hasn't stopped Tom from growing the 10 Cent Tom network by supplying sponsored blue bins to homes, businesses and events across the Gold Coast. Working with the support of family and a carer, Tom travels across the coast in his small van to collect the containers from each bin, chatting to his “customers” as he goes.
A long-time 10 Cent Tom supporter, Kollosche this month funded the purchase of 80 new bins through the Kollosche Community Fund. Established late last year, the Community Fund collects a percentage of every property sold by Kollosche agents to support special causes by way of donations and sponsorships. “Tom is an inspiration to all of us,” says Kollosche Managing Director Michael Kollosche. “Tom doesn’t see any barriers to his success. He’s out there making a difference and saving to build his own recycling depot so that he can employ
“Community support has enabled Tom to achieve so much and a storage site will take him another step closer to raising funds towards his own depot.” Every 10 cents Tom saves goes towards his ultimate plan to open a 10 Cent Tom Recycling Depot on the Gold Coast and employ people with disabilities to sort containers ready for recycling. Each container Tom recycles as an individual is worth 10 cents, however once 10 Cent Tom secures a depot site the containers collected are valued at 60% more – this would greatly increase 10 Cent Tom’s capacity to employ people with disabilities. “For a person with a disability, regular employment is so much more than income; it provides a sense of purpose, inclusion and social contact with the community,” says Carolyn. “To offer employment opportunities in our own depot is a very powerful motivator.” If you can help 10 Cent Tom in their quest to find a suitable storage site, please share your thoughts via email info@10centtom.com.au or call 0415 968 109.

Service Without Limits What started out as a pick-up and delivery service for the elderly who couldn’t leave their homes during the first Covid outbreak in March 2020, has grown into so much more.
W
hen a small band of volunteers set out to help people in need when Covid first struck two years ago, they could not have imagined how the demand for their services might grow. Serving Our People (SOP) is now a fullyfledged charity with four full-time staff, over 20 casual staff, an advisory board, a team of professional advisors and more than 1000 volunteers. The SOP team now collect and deliver a wide range of items, from meals through to furniture, to those in need on the Gold Coast, Logan, Brisbane and Northern NSW. The largely self-funded service has reached over 50,000 recipients with a wide range of needs in a short period of time. “We went from the pandemic to the Afghan refugee crisis to a natural disaster with so much flooding. It has been an eventful two years,” says SOP CEO and Founder Yas Daniel Matbouly. “People are really suffering and experiencing misfortune on many different levels.” SOP has amplified its impact by partnering up with other charities and services who specialise in issues such as domestic violence, alcoholism, mental health and disability. “The service has evolved into bespoke care, whereby we support individuals and accompany them through their struggles and help them to work through their issues,” says Mr Matbouly. “These issues range from homelessness to a single parent with cancer who can’t pay the bills, to a 97-year-old lady whose house got flooded. “We never wish to turn anyone in need away, but at the same time there are some things that are out of our scope, so we
refer those people to professionals who have that know-how. “There are so many amazing charities out there doing wonderful work and our strength is in our collaborative approach and working together.” SOP also works with restaurants and hotels on the Gold Coast and in Brisbane who donate meals that would otherwise go to waste. Those meals are collected by SOP and delivered to other charities who can serve the food to those who need it. This year SOP is acting on plans to establish what will be Queensland’s first free supermarket. Non perishable food items are collected from various donation points across the city and made available to those who need them the most from SOPLEX - the charity's first official Corporate Head Quarters, located in Mermaid Beach. “That idea has come from the people we are serving,” says Mr Matbouly. “We are constantly asking how we can help, how we can dig deeper and take social action.” Mr Matbouly acknowledges the support and backing from corporate organisations and local businesses in enabling the forward-thinking charity to fast-track its efforts. Many of those who have lent their time and expertise will step out for the Serving Our People Inc. 2nd Annual Gala Fundraising Dinner on Saturday 28 May at The Star Gold Coast.
a second year running, for the gala and also behind the scenes to help in any way we can,” says Managing Director Michael Kollosche. “We are grateful for this platform to give back to our community.” Unwanted furniture from homes listed through Kollosche has been donated to SOP for distribution to flood-affected households, while Kollosche Commercial has leased tenancies within SOPLEX precinct, the revenue from which pays for the charity’s administration. In March, Kollosche donated $25,000 through the Kollosche Community Fund and the New Projects team donated $5,000 last December to support SOP’s Christmas drive. “Corporate and business support is our bloodline,” says Mr Matbouly. “It is so important for the survival of the charity to have Kollosche and all of these businesses supporting us. “I’ve been in the corporate world since 1996 and it’s very refreshing to be so hands-on in doing something with a beautiful purpose. “Our greater goal is to change the mindset of humanity globally by creating consciousness to do an act of service as part of one’s life routine. That could be a daily act, a monthly act or even once a year. There is immense power in the simple act of helping another in need.”
Kollosche is the major sponsor for the gala event which last year raised $441,000 through tickets sales and a lively auction where Kollosche Auctioneer agents put their skills to good use to elicit top dollar for cars, holidays and service packages. “We are extremely proud to throw our support behind Serving Our People for

Risks and Rewards of Amalgamation Huge demand for Gold Coast real estate makes it an ideal time for unit owners to band together to amalgamate property and attract developer attention.
A
malgamations aren’t quick and easy exercises, but there are big rewards for owners who get the details right – particularly given the insatiable appetite for new apartment projects in the city. An amalgamation is where unit owners in a multi-unit block collectively agree to combine their properties to form a single lot and offer the holding as a development site or as multiple strata-titled units in one line. Amalgamations have become more common on the Gold Coast where vacant development sites are lacking, particularly in central areas such as Broadbeach, Mermaid Beach and Surfers Paradise. The popularity of amalgamations for unit owners comes down to the potential to
sell for a higher price compared to individual market listings aimed at non-developer buyers. This is especially true for beachside boutique complexes built in the 1970s and 1980s which are ideal high-density development sites. The older these complexes become, the more costly they become to maintain, which can provide further motivation for owners to sell. Commercial agents Adam and Tony Grbcic, together with John and Nicole Mayer of Kollosche New Projects, have recently listed the El Dorado building in Broadbeach – an amalgamation of six units on a 654m2 block aimed at both developers and investors seeking a significant holding in this high-growth suburb.
El Dorado, Broadbeach
Three Principles to Agree On Before embarking on an amalgamation exercise, there are three main principles that unit owners should first agree on.
1 In Queensland, 100% of owners in a strata titled scheme must unanimously consent to a collective sale of their lots for an amalgamation to proceed.
2 Establish a floor price that is higher than what each owner could sell to non-developer buyers.
3 Owners must decide if they want to sell collectively on a price per entitlement, square metre basis or individually. If it’s the latter, owners must keep their negotiations with the developer confidential, otherwise they risk raising expectations among the group which could jeopardise the deal.
Owners should also beware of the pitfalls and have realistic expectations of developers.
can help to alleviate the unit supply shortage on the Gold Coast driven by local and interstate demand.
The risk falls to the developer because they are the ones investing heavily in professional, consultant and development application fees, as well as initial deposits for owners.
If you live in a low-rise building that requires significant capital expenditure in the next few years, this may be the right time to consider an amalgamation to capitalise on strong market demand.
Time is the other factor owners need to appreciate. Don’t expect an instant windfall or hefty deposit, however the rewards can be significant if owners are prepared to wait.
Reach out to Kollosche Commercial for a confidential conversation around your goals.
When developers enter a contract to buy a multi-title building, they are generally looking for a settlement period of between six and 18 months. That allows a developer time to unlock the potential value of the land by obtaining the development approval needed to be able to proceed with a project. There are several factors currently at play which will influence the demand for amalgamated sites going forward, such as proposed town planning amendments which will potentially increase setbacks and reduce height in some areas. Demand will inevitably fall when the market reaches its peak, however unit owners remain in a position where they

New research puts car prices under the spotlight.
WORDS CHRIS NIXON
MANY READERS will have had personal experience of the perfect storm of the Covid-19 pandemic and a dire global shortage of semiconductors – computer chips – that has caused unprecedented delays in new-car availability. A months-long wait for a bespoke Rolls-Royce might be acceptable, but now that is the situation facing makes as humble as Toyota. And a new Australian survey has revealed car buyers are also being hit in the wallet, with average prices increasing by 7.6 percent since before the pandemic crisis struck. Prices in some manufacturers’ ranges are up by 17 per cent and some individual models by more than 40 per cent. The survey was produced by authoritative motor industry publisher GoAuto, which compared standard price data for 1,100 cars and light commercial models from August 2019 to March this year. (There should be some caveats here for buyers wanting to investigate further or comparing their own showroom experiences. Firstly, such surveys are based on manufacturer recommended retail prices not drive-away prices, which are likely to differ widely due to options fitted and negotiated dealer discounts. Secondly, GoAuto primarily compares individual models rather than makes; fluctuation rates may vary from model to model in a manufacturer’s range.
70 covemagazine.com.au
– Issue 90
Also, consideration of Mercedes-Benz and Honda was compromised by these makes adopting new agency sales systems with fixed prices.) While noting factors such as routine model updates, increasing technical complexity, shipping delays, currency exchange rates and factory closures due to semiconductor and staff shortages have affected manufacturing costs, GoAuto reported Australian car prices are the most expensive in 30 years when compared to average wages. Interestingly, the survey speculates the affordability of electric vehicles (EVs) could come about not by their prices coming down, as widely expected, but by conventional petrol/ diesel models rising to match them. This may be partly true, but the price gap between battery-powered EVs and petrol/diesel motivation remains large and EVs have a long road ahead to reach everyday affordability. The ‘good guys’? Bentley, Porsche and Tesla reduced average prices – respectively, down 2.63 per cent or $33,051, 0.27 per cent or $2919 and 11.56 per cent or $8950 – while BMW performance division Alpina, Ferrari and McLaren held theirs. Well-heeled buyers among our readership should be pleased to learn that premium makes went up only at similar rates to high-volume brands, and all less than 10 per cent.
Land Rover (9.01 per cent), Audi (8.59 per cent) BMW (8.4 per cent) have had the biggest increases in the premium market. At the bottom of this scale, Rolls-Royce (0.99 per cent) and Lamborghini (1.94 per cent) suggest there’s always room to negotiate. Finally, the perception of ‘cheap’ takes a hit with the prices of Chinese brands Haval up 17 per cent, and Great Wall Motors up 16.10 per cent. Chinese SUVs, utes and light commercial vans have held the bottom rung of the price ladder during their establishment phase in the market, but these big increases may be seen as catch-up moves as their quality and popularity make rapid gains. What can buyers take from the GoAuto survey? As usual, there will never be a better time to buy a new vehicle. Additionally, good tax incentives remain for business purchases, but interest rates will rise soon. Inflated demand and prices for used cars mean new-car residuals should hold strong. Finally, for enthusiasts, the end of production of petrol-powered cars is in (distant) sight, if not imminent. Their sale will be banned in Britain from 2030 and obviously other countries will follow. It’s not too soon to pick up one of the dream cars featured elsewhere on these pages as the motoring Domesday looms.

NEW CAR NEWS
Chris Nixon unveils the latest models and makes to hit Australian shores.
LOW-PRICE LEVY FOR LATEST CHEVY The Australian enthusiast’s beloved HSV high-performance Commodore sedan is long gone, along with the parent brand, but some V8-spiritual relief has landed in the form of the first Chevrolet Corvette to be officially sold here with factory right-hand drive. That’s big news for fans of America’s-own sports car, who since its introduction in 1953 have had to privately (and expensively) convert imports from left-hand steering in order to drive here. The C8 (eighth generation) Corvette Stingray is now available from a limited number of dealers representing General Motors Specialty Vehicles, a shrunken Holden successor established to distribute this car and the big Chevy Silverado pick-up. Pitched as a Porsche 911 rival, the Corvette has an impressive story. Now with a mid-mounted V8 providing 369 kiloWatts of power, it can hit 310 kmh. Two trim levels plus a standalone special edition called Carbon are available from $144,990. A convertible version adds $15,000. Less than $150,000 for a 300 kmh sports car appears to be unbeatable value and the limited Corvette allocation for Australia is likely to be sold out very soon.
ASTON’S FABULOUS VALHALLA The numbers are staggering for Aston Martin’s latest hyper-sports car, the Valhalla. And ironic. Now owner of a Formula 1 team, Aston Martin used the recent Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne to unveil the fabulous Valhalla. It bills the car as not only showcasing its involvement in the über-tech world of F1, but also as a first step in transitioning its road cars from petrol power, to hybrid and ultimately, full electric. The Valhalla is the first Aston Martin to locate its engine behind the occupants, rather than in front. At last, it falls into line with the layout long used by Ferrari, Lamborghini, Lotus, Porsche, McLaren and other supercar makes. And it has not one motor, but three – a petrol, twin-turbo V8 plus electric motors front and rear. Total power when called up by the driver, 700 kiloWatts (950 horsepower). Torque, 1000 Newtonmetres. Performance is in the F1 realm, with acceleration from rest to 100 kmh taking just 2.5 seconds and a top speed of 350 kmh. And there’s the irony: isn’t electric power supposed to be saving the world from the motor car? Here’s an example of a road car with performance that’s impossible to experience except on a race track and that will be limited to just 999 people able to afford the equivalent of an $A1.8 million price tag.

The fully-electric, SUV-like hatchback also won the Best Design and Best Electric awards, presented at the New York motor show. It beat its twin-under-the-skin Kia EV6 and the Ford Mustang Mach-E in an all-EV final. The award was determined by 102 judges from 33 countries and reviewers around the world have given the Hyundai rave reviews. GROWTH
Two years that reshaped the property market.
WORDS NICK NICHOLS IN THE SPACE of two short years, the pandemic has reshaped the Australian property market in unexpected ways. Perhaps the most significant is a tightening of price differentials between regional and metropolitan markets. Anyone with an interest in property would have seen house prices in some of their favourite regional markets reach heady heights in the past two years. A recent analysis by CoreLogic shows that house prices in regional areas grew 70 per cent faster than the combined growth of our larger cities since 2020. Specifically, the exodus from capital cities led to a 36.5 per cent increase in the home value index in regional markets compared with just a 21.4 per cent lift in the combined capitals. This goes a long way to explaining the extent of the narrowing price gap between the capitals and regions. Even before the pandemic, premium regional locations, such as the Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast, were leading the way with strong growth, but now they are cracking records that put the market in line with some of the most expensive real estate in the country. A penthouse in Noosa, for example, sold last year for the equivalent of $54,000 a square metre. While this compares with $108,000 per square metre paid for a Double Bay penthouse in Sydney this year, it reflects the willingness of high-networth individuals to pay a premium for prime regional properties. It also points to the trend of property wealth spreading beyond the dominant markets of Sydney and Melbourne.
The median house price on the Gold Coast edged close to $1 million at the end of 2021. Prior to the pandemic, this would have been considered the sole prevail of the country’s most expensive market, Sydney. The Regional Movers Index, compiled by the Regional Australia Institute to gauge domestic migration from the big cities, underscored the price momentum for the Gold Coast which took the lion’s share of sea-changers in 2021 by absorbing 11 per cent of the combined capital city exodus. It was followed by the Sunshine Coast at 5 per cent – which is a comparatively equivalent growth rate based on the Sunshine Coast having half of the Gold Coast’s population. The gains in the Australian market in 2021 have seen the combined value of the residential sector edge close to $10 trillion, which is $2 trillion more than this time last year as the regions made a healthy contribution to this total. While the market consensus is for an easing of property price pressures this year, the Knight Frank Wealth Report for 2022 is forecasting another big year for the top end of the market. The report reveals that changes in spending patterns by the ultra-wealthy have been driving growth in prime regional areas, but it also sees the trend now swinging back in favour of the big cities. “There’s been much attention on the idea that COVID-19 triggered an ongoing trend of Australians leaving urban centres for regional areas,” says Knight Frank’s head of residential research Michelle Ciesielski. “In fact, what we are now seeing is that ultra-wealthy Australians are transferring their wealth back to the cities whilst also investing in second homes.
“The use of second homes for longer periods was supercharged in 2021 as flexible working grew and homeowners looked to decamp for periods of time.” The Knight Frank Wealth Report’s Prime International Residential Index (PIRI) tracks the movement of luxury residential prices across the world’s top 100 residential markets. Included in this list are five Australian cities – Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth and Gold Coast. Looking over the past year, the PIRI reveals that the Australian luxury property market performed better than the global average for a second successive year in 2021. The combined growth of the five Australian cities was 12.3 per cent which compares with the global average of 8.4 per cent. The Gold Coast was the best performing among all the Australian cities, ranked as the 12th fastest-growing market globally at 17.1 per cent. It was followed by Sydney at number 17 (16.2 per cent), Brisbane at 29 (11.2 per cent), Perth at 31 (10.5 per cent) and Melbourne at 39 (9.4 per cent). The clear message is that luxury properties are in demand by high-net-worth individuals. Even though the regions remain strong, the Wealth Report is predicting a strong comeback this year for Sydney’s luxury market with forecast growth of 9 per cent. Notably, this will be at a much slower pace than 2021.

2022 MARKET UPDATE WITH STEVE HUNT | MEDIAHUNT.COM.AU
COASTAL SHIFT Accelerating the Queensland Dream.
Glasshouse
Coast
FOR MANY around the world and around Australia, the desire to live in Queensland has been a distant pipedream. But recent data shows that the dream has become a reality for many, and this has underpinned Southeast Queensland – with the exception of perhaps Sydney’s prestige market – as the premier property destination in Australia throughout this period. In fact, latest data shows Queensland continues to be the most popular destination in the country for property investment with the most settlements in the past three quarters than any other state. Let’s face it, a lot of people have benefited. Even first homebuyers who bought near the start of the boom have gained significant equity against their loans. If you owned a house or apartment in early 2020, chances are it is worth 40-50 per cent more now than it was back then. If you were an investor anywhere in the Southeast, you will have done well on paper. If you are a property developer, you probably have a very healthy balance sheet with incredible sales to report in some projects during this period. One thinks of Sammut Group’s ‘Coast’ project which sold almost $200 million in product at an
76 covemagazine.com.au
– Issue 90
average price of more than $4 million – a record for the Gold Coast. Or Spyre Group’s $77 million Natura at Burleigh Heads which sold out of its apartments on one weekend in 2020. Or S & S Projects’ Flow apartments at Rainbow Bay that sold out rapidly at an average price of $3.5 million. I could go on – there are many projects that have sold out giving developers incredible balance sheets and new investors to Queensland stunning new abodes in which to not only accelerate, but accommodate the dream. It’s not all beer and skittles however, and there are certainly some developers putting projects on ice because they no longer stack up against the spectre of rising construction and materials costs. Regardless of this – the dream continues to become a reality for many with Queensland recording its highest migration numbers last year in almost two decades. What is most notable is the quality of the investment coming into Queensland. Rich listers like Harry Triguboff, Max Beck (Beckdev), Eddie Hirsch (Hirsch and Faigen) and Sam Arnaout (Iris Capital) have combined investments on the Gold Coast in the billions of dollars.
And these players have the balance sheets to resist any headwinds. Hirsch and Faigen only recently announced Queensland’s leading construction company Hutchinsons to build its third Gold Coast project in 18 months – Yves at Mermaid Beach which has been one of the sales standouts of a softening off the plan market. Sammut Group has also announced Australia’s largest construction company Multiplex as the builder of Coast. The migration into regional areas out of the traditional live-to-work pods of Sydney and Melbourne is profound. In the past, the biggest hindrance for growth in the state was a lack of unemployment. But with unemployment now at around 4 per cent there is certainly an economic case to move to the Sunshine State. Add to that comparative value – we are still in some areas three times better value than some areas of Sydney and Melbourne – and you have all the ingredients you need for the boom to continue. The creep up the coast is starting to percolate as well. It’s been almost 20 years since a large scale residential and marina project has been added to Queensland’s coastline, but a South Australian

consortium has just unveiled a $350 million marina and resort project that is set to transform Airlie Beach in the Whitsundays. The approved project aims to convert the pristine prestige pocket of Shute Harbour into a world-class destination featuring a new resort hotel and residential precinct with restaurants and retail outlets, complemented by a 400-berth marina. Shute Harbour Marina, the first port and resort residential precinct since the $250 million Port of Airlie was built in 2006, will create the ultimate waterfront lifestyle for residents and tourists in one of the world’s most pristine sailing locations. The multi-use marina, located on a prime 41ha waterfront site, will tap into a critical shortage of secure boat moorings in the state’s north. Most importantly for the regions, the project will provide a much-needed boost for post-Covid tourism in the Whitsundays region and create 700 jobs during and post-construction. Shute Harbour Marina Resort will also include a new commercial hub known as Pier 61, as part of a master-planned marina plaza that will create a range of new retail and commercial outlets for the waterfront development. “This is a development of regional and state significance that will deliver enormous benefit to the local economy.”
“In particular, we’ve seen growing demand for marina berths in recent years and this is an exceptional offering that delivers a highly accessible mainland residential resort with a superb range of amenities and supporting services,” said Project Director Mark Daniels, who heads a consortium developing the project The Shute Harbour Marina Resort master plan comprises 58 managed resort dwellings, each with their own private marina berths of 25 metres at their doorstep; a retirement resort of 70 apartments with resort club facilities; and a 100-plus room resort hotel, including function and meeting rooms, bars, restaurants, swimming pool and undercover parking. The plan also includes a 44-room international backpackers accommodation offering with reception, lounge, games room and amenities. The re-birth of areas from Coolangatta to Cairns is a blend of rapid and slow, but it is sustainable as long as the dream of southerners to live here continues. Barring circumstances out of our periphery, I believe we are still in the early stages of a transformational shift that will benefit Queensland for many years to come.

A BOAT LOVER’S
DREAM
Sophisticated luxury on the doorstep of a waterfront playground.
SINCE THE PANDEMIC, the $8 billion-dollar marine industry is booming. With sales skyrocketing and marina occupancy rates surging, it seems that more and more Aussies are seeking out the peace and tranquillity of a life on the water. Australia wide, 25 per cent of the population say they go boating. In Queensland, that figure rises to 34 per cent. Immediate access to coastal and inland waterway systems coupled with enviably temperate weather makes boating a popular pastime in the state. With over 860km of navigable tidal waterways, the Gold Coast has always been a little slice of boating heaven.

Harbouring the largest boating facility in the Southern Hemisphere, the city has become the unofficial headquarters for Australia’s marine sector. It is little wonder when you consider that there are nine times more waterways for boaties to explore on the Gold Coast than in the city of Venice. From the Broadwater alone you can access North and South Stradbroke Islands with their stunning beaches and the island resort of Couran Cove, pop to Wave Break Island for a barbeque and dip in pristine waters, head to The Spit for a seafood lunch and meander through boutique shops, pull up along Jumpinpin Channel for some beach angling or make your way to Peel or Moreton Island to snorkel with the dugongs and turtles.
All of which is only the tip of the iceberg of what Gold Coast has to offer boat owners. Soon, mere minutes’ from the world class Marine Precinct – with direct access to everything the Broadwater has to offer – local boaties will have the ideal home to retreat to after a blissful day exploring unparalleled sites. Situated on a 3011 sqm site on the historic piece of land once known as Anglers Paradise, Belvue Broadwater is the first high rise development in the area for nearly 35 years. The incomparable architecturally designed collection of 30 full floor waterfront skyhomes and three exclusive triple-storey freestanding homes promises to be the essence of coastal style and refinement.
Offering uninterrupted views of the glistening Pacific Ocean and absolute frontage onto the Broadwater, Director of NPA Projects, Andrew Erwin says this luxurious masterplanned gated estate is Runaway Bay reimagined. “The 31-storey, $100 million project is the epitome of contemporary sophisticated luxury on the doorstep of a boat lover’s playground,” says Andrew, who has been appointed to market the project. “Residents have direct access to a calm swimmable Broadwater cove with private sandy shoreline and their own pontoon with reserved short-term boat parking for themselves and their guests. >>

“Wave Break Island is a moment’s boat ride away and a world class marina is just down the road.” When they’re not out on the water themselves, residents can kick back on their expansive decks to watch the super yachts go by or enjoy the unrivalled resort-style amenities. “The development is designed to be a haven for residents with everything they could want or need at their fingertips,” says Andrew. “It features a gymnasium, sauna, steam room, two swimming pools, hotel style poolside and waterfront cabanas and daybeds as well as a swim up bar and barbeque pavilion.” Being developed by Monaco Property Group, each residence has three bedrooms, three bathrooms plus a multi-purpose room and two basement carparks. The elegant interiors feature bespoke details such as customised handblown glass lighting from local Gold Coast artisans and brushed brass elements, Gaggenau appliances, European Oak timber floors and natural stone throughout. With apartments priced from $2.85 million, Andrew says Belvue – French for beautiful view – presents a rare opportunity to secure a brand new waterfront apartment with uninterrupted Broadwater views that will never be built out. “This is the last high rise development site in Runaway Bay and it’s an unbeatable price, especially for the level of luxurious waterfront living this development offers.” For those curious to learn more about the development, Belvue is currently taking expressions of interest. LUXURY LIVING
THE NEW SPECIAL It’s here, and all eyes are on Marina Point.
APARTMENTS ON THE GOLD COAST are a dime a dozen. But, when something truly special comes along, people notice. Marina Point is the new special. Heralding in an advanced era of apartment living, Marina Point promises a standard that few other developments have delivered on. Its breathtaking views, luxe facilities and exquisite attention to detail are an enviable new benchmark for Hope Island living. Marina Point will break ground in 2022 in one of Hope Island’s most coveted waterfront locations. Bordered by the sparkling Coomera River on two sides, it delivers stunning panoramic waterfront views all the way to the lights of Surfers Paradise. Developer Rick Sheida from Sheida Group said Marina Point takes luxury to a level that’s beyond even their enormously successful project Anchorage Apartments, which is in its final stage. “Anchorage is our pride and joy, and we gave it 100 per cent of our passion for providing the highest quality living,” he said. “We have an even bigger vision for Marina Point, one where our residents live like they’re on a dream holiday, every day.”
104 covemagazine.com.au
– Issue 90
Every facet of life has been carefully crafted at Marina Point: security, wellness, lifestyle and home living. Each mid-rise boutique apartment block features opulent luxury apartments with stunning high ceilings. Apartments are available in two bedrooms, two bedrooms with a study, or three bedroom configurations, starting from a generous 153sqm. Every home is outfitted with high-end appliances, designed for maximum breeze flowthrough, and comes with two secure carparks. The utopian resort lifestyle has been considered from every angle. From oversized balconies, residents can relax and watch the boats pass by on the glittering waterways. Marina Point’s wide-open waterfront allows for easy manoeuvring of vessels in and out and multiple berths up to 20 metres are available for mooring even larger craft. The canals from Marina Point offer bridge-free access to the open ocean, meandering past the exquisite residences that line the waterways. For smaller vessels, on-site storage is available for kayaks and jet skis.
While tranquil on the outside, Marina Point’s facilities are a bustling hub of recreation and fun for those who choose it. The spectacular common area boasts a resident’s lounge and bar with full waterfront views in a resort-style entertaining area. A heated 25-metre lap pool is ready for yearround swimming, and a 25-metre lagoon pool sparkles in the sun. The state-of-the-art health and wellness centre features a fully equipped gymnasium, yoga room, massage room, sauna and spa. Excluding the lounge, Marina Point’s entertainment facilities will be constructed in Stage 1, which is a rarity for residential developments. “Our goal is to prioritise our residents, and that means making sure these magnificent facilities are ready to use from the beginning,” said Mr Sheida. Far from crowded, Marina Point instead boasts one hectare of lush, landscaped gardens and open space. Its abundance of fresh green land makes it a perfect home for families who don’t want to miss out on space for the children to play.
Pets aren’t forgotten either, with dog washing facilities available in the car wash bay. Marina Point’s premium location is a close neighbour to Hope Island’s shopping and dining precincts. Hope Island Marketplace is two minutes’ drive away, or residents can stroll the scenic esplanade boardwalks to local coffee shops and boutique stores. Located at the quiet dead-end of Grant Street, Marina Point’s picturesque corner of Hope Island is truly serene and undisturbed. Mr Sheida said future-proofing was another high-level consideration in Marina Point’s design. “We’ve emphasised safety with premium fob-controlled security gates with separate entry and exit points, and security fobs for the common areas too,” he said. “For the future, we know electric vehicles are becoming commonplace and we’re ready for that with powerpoints in every carpark.” Picture-perfect, tranquil and luxurious, Marina Point is ideal for downsizers, first home buyers and families alike. Prices start from $975,000. More information is available on 1300 075 432, or visit the Marina Point Showroom to view floor plans, floorplates and samples of the finishes. Open Mondays to Saturdays from 10am to 4pm at 93 Sheehan Avenue, Hope Island. Issue 90 – covemagazine.com.au Issue 90 – covemagazine.com.au 105

INNOCENCE & ART The inaugural BMG Legal Art Prize awarded to Queensland College of Art graduate Sky Parra. WORDS LOUISE CROSSEN QUEENSLAND COLLEGE OF ART (QCA) graduate Sky Parra has won the inaugural BMG Legal Art Prize, which puts the spotlight on victims of wrongful conviction in Australia. The prize was sponsored by Gold Coast law firm Behlau, Murakami and Grant (BMG Legal) as part of a long-standing partnership with Griffith University’s Innocence Project, which helps free Australians who have been wrongly convicted. The entries feature in an exhibition at the Webb Gallery at the QCA South Bank, before going on display at the offices of BMG Legal on the Gold Coast. For QCA fine art major Sky Parra, the prize has inspired a year-long nationwide project to capture portraits of people exonerated of committing a crime. The subject of Sky’s winning entry was Henry Keogh, who served over 20 years for a crime which never occurred. Although his conviction was found to be based on false expert testimony, the courts were unable to review the case until a change of legislation. The portrait was completed during a sitting last year – an experience that was life-changing for the young artist. “We spoke on the phone for hours, many, many times before we met,” Sky said.

“He was able to tell me stories and convey details of the case that really moved me and informed the work. “During a brief visit to Queensland, we arranged a sitting – I made several sketches and photographs and then got stuck in. “I am normally quite deliberate, but I felt like I had never painted issues and emotions like this before. “I knew I had to do something radically different to my style, and I sort of wanted to put myself through the emotions. “I want the painting to have a greater meaning than just being a nice portrait, it’s a privilege to tell a really profound story like Henry’s.” This year, Sky is expanding the project – travelling the country, making a series of portraits of people still incarcerated and waiting on their appeal. “It gives me a tremendous sense of purpose” “I wake up with such determination every day because it actually weighs pretty heavy on my heart. “After you talk and connect with these people, you think ‘wow, I really want to help’. “Art is a great way to get people’s attention and to raise awareness about these issues.” The two legal eagles who sponsored the prize have longstanding connections to the Innocence Project at Griffith University. Griffith University Adjunct Law Professor Jason Murakami has volunteered with the Innocence
Project since the Gold Coast chapter was founded at Griffith Law School in 2001. Ron Behlau is a Griffith Law School alumnus and newly appointed Co-Director of the Innocence Project. Jason said the art prize was intended to support emerging artists while raising awareness of wrongful conviction in Australia. “We were aware that art students were graduating at an uncertain time, due to COVID,” he said. “I am a keen artist myself, and the quality of the entrants was just astounding. “These works really convey the stories behind the subjects. “It’s a powerful exhibition and the paintings evoke strong emotions.” Ron Behlau began volunteering with the Innocence Project as a Griffith law student, later worked pro bono on the project, and was recently appointed co-director with Dr Robyn Blewer. “When you’re trying to make changes in the justice system, you’ve got to bring people with you,” he explained. “We have wrongful convictions in this country and there are some real problems with the justice system. “This exhibition reminds everyone that wrongful convictions are an issue that needs to be on the agenda.”

HEART OF THE ARTS THE CULTURAL LANDSCAPE of the Gold Coast is changing and at the forefront of this quiet revolution is HOTA, Home of the Arts. The hidden oasis a stone’s throw from Surfers Paradise, the epicentre of performance, art, and major community events has exploded in recent years. The investment’s paying dividends for locals and travellers looking to dip their toes into internationally renowned musicals, the big names of the music industry and an expansive collection of coveted artworks. The best bit? You don’t have to stray far from the beach to find it. Celebrating its first birthday since opening in May 2021, HOTA Gallery is the $60.5 million building taking the world by storm. The vibrant pops of colour scream ‘welcome to the Gold Coast’, with the entr y way transporting visitors to a AAA rated, 2000sqm exhibition space. HOTA Gallery features six-levels, an exhibition hall set to host blockbuster world first exhibitions, a dedicated Children’s Gallery, and four spaces dedicated to highlighting the Gold Coast City Collection (valued at $32.5 million). Determined to provide an all-encompassing experience, HOTA Gallery is home to fine dining gourmet restaurant Palette and The Exhibitionist Bar. Both luxury locations with a coastal twist, the destinations have garnered their own reputations. Palette, led by Dayan Hartill-Law, has stunned diners with artistically inspired plates since its inaugural service. Less than a year after opening, Palette was awarded 14 points from the Australian Good Food Guide and earned two Chefs Hats. Built on a desire to keep their community at the forefronts of every decision, menu, and event, Palette has built a reputation for celebrating locally grown produce and the culinary talent of the Gold Coast and Australia as a whole.

Palette’s rotating menu, inspired by the exhibitions surrounding the restaurant, brings a freshness and excitement sometimes lacking at traditional fine dining locations. With carefully curated menus and Sunday High Tea dedicated to adding a twist to the classic experience, dining on the artistic side is now a must-do of Gold Coast living. Taking the elevator to the top of HOTA Gallery, you’ll find one of the most photographed views of the city skyline. The Exhibitionist Bar sits atop the building, with panoramic views spanning from hinterland to coastline. Worthy of being your sole reason for a visit, the cocktail artistry of Tom Angel – the connoisseur behind the innovative menu. Making the list of Australia’s top 10 bartenders five times, Tom’s talent is sought after worldwide. Continually challenging the boundaries of mixology, his cocktails transcend your expectations. Beyond the HOTA Gallery sits a 17-hectare cultural playground. Home to a traditional style theatre, cinema spaces with daily sessions, underground venues and the award-winning Outdoor Stage, the versatile venue provides the perfect setting for shows, concerts and experiences year-round. Perfect sunny skies, the odd rainy day or breezy relaxed weekend – HOTA has something happening. 2022 started with sell-out performances of Queensland Ballet’s The Sleeping Beauty, followed by a string of sold-out nights on the Outdoors Stage. Starting the year big, HOTA will end it even bigger. The global phenomenon and Broadway sensation, Come From Away, lands on-stage in July. The first major Broadway production to be hosted at HOTA and on the Gold Coast, the anticipation continues to rise as we get closer to opening night. The announcement of the three-week season signals the start of major shows making their way to the Gold Coast, with surprise announcements always around the corner. From Broadway musicals to contemporary ballet, there’s a lot in store for the second half of the year.

AQUARIUS 21 Jan – 19 Feb

The solar eclipse on 1 May will revitalise your personal and business partnerships, so if you would like to forge new agreements, the next two months are ideal. Towards the end of May, you’ll appreciate the chance to turn a corner with an arrangement and broaden your horizons.
You’ll gain the opportunity to create a more secure position in life. You may even experience an unexpected change in status or a work offer early in May. Be open to new collaborations and, if single, to meeting someone new, especially at the new moon in your sign on 29 June.
You’ll feel inspired to rebuild and rethink your situation, especially in connection with your personal life, your neighbourhood and environment. Romance will be appealing, but also potentially misleading, so choose your path carefully as developments could surprise you.
You are ready to torpedo yourself into new territory. The eclipses in May will kick-start your need to expand your horizons, presenting travel, an option to study or a new job. But you must be prepared to co-operate and collaborate with those you share responsibilities with.
