I am beyond excited to be celebrating our 10th year at ‘Hood Magazine! The past 10 years has been amazing and we have you to thank for it. It is fun to hear from families that have been with us all 10 years and how much of an impact we have made on their lives. We are always hearing from new readers and how thankful they are they found us. 2020 brings many exciting new things and we can’t wait to share them with you! We thought we would start our 10th year with a new issue we have never done before! I am really excited about our first “Boredom Busters” issue. We noticed lots of you were looking for things to do with your kids over the winter months when we are all stuck inside. This issue is packed full of creative ideas for you to keep on hand for the moments where you need to burn energy with the kids. While you are burning that energy, make sure to snap a few pictures and share them with us on our Facebook and Instagram pages too! Make sure to check out our calendar of events (did you know it is online too?) for activities to keep you busy every day of the week! All of our

events are conveniently sorted by age and type of activity. However, the BEST part is you can add the events right to your personal calendar, so you don’t forget about them! I know all of you are a busy parent like myself and if it is not in the calendar it is not going to happen! Do you know a teen that is amazing and doing good things in our community? We are looking for our 2020 Inspiring Teens and we need you to share the uplifting stories of the teens in our community! It doesn’t take a big gesture to make big difference. We want to hear the stories, big and small, of the teens who are working to make the Sioux Empire a great place to call home! We have lots of new things planned for this year, including some guest writers you are going to see in each issue. We want to hear from you and what you would like to see from ‘Hood for this year and the next 10 years. Please always let us know if there is something you would like us to talk about.

Winterizing Our Eyes by Dr. Angela Gulbranson, Visions Eye Care + Therapy Center
The two biggest vision concerns during the winter are dry eyes and protecting our eyes from the winter sun’s harmful rays. Most people equate summer with cool sunglasses. But did you know that it is extremely important that you protect your eyes from the harsh UV rays from the sun all year round? Up to about 90% of the harmful UV rays are reflected off snow. Therefore, the type of sun protection you wear is important. Learn more online at thehoodmagazine.com

A Healthy Start for and Your Baby You
The Waiting Game Our very own Jaclyn added baby number three to their family in early 2020! In every issue this year we are going to hear from her on the ups and downs of parenting as a family of five. This month, she is talking about the pre-baby preparations and how her family used checklists to stay organized during the transition. There are so many emotions that arise when you find out that you are expecting. One minute you are jumping for joy with excitement and the next minute you are frozen in fear and anxiety; it’s safe to say if you have been on this journey you can relate! It does seem with each addition to the family the months pass so much quicker. While pregnant with our first child, I read all the books, kept track of all the “fruit sizes” the baby was being compared to, and at any given time I could give you the exact week and day of where I was at in my pregnancy. Now, the third time around I’m certain most of the time if anyone asked how far along I was my response was, “I’m not sure!” It seems this time around the days flew by and suddenly it hits you that the 40-week mark is right around the corner! Whether you’re expecting your first or fifth, one thing that doesn’t change during the last few weeks, is that daunting “to-do” list before baby comes. The end of a pregnancy feels like it takes an eternity, but I’m convinced that is for good reason. All those last-minute

tasks can take time...from getting the nursery ready, installing the car seat, and just the overall “house stuff”, you can be left feeling like there are never enough hours in the day. It also becomes daunting when items keep popping up in your mind and you’re constantly thinking, “I need to grab some of those” or “I need to pack that” and of course, “Don’t forget this!” During the last few weeks while you’re playing the waiting game, staying organized is the key. When it comes to having a baby, it’s safe to say nothing will ever go exactly as planned; but having lists can help when preparing yourself as well as the rest of your family for the new arrival. If you are expecting, check out ‘Hood’s hospital bag checklist to help you prepare for the arrival of your sweet bundle. I created this list based on the items I included in my hospital bag, as well as suggestions that other friends and family have said they couldn’t live without! Hop over to Hood Online to download the checklist for free and shoot us a message to chime in with your hospital bag essentials too! l

baby What Age to Start
If you are wondering if your child is old enough for swim lessons, the answer is likely YES. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends that structured swim lessons start at 1 year of age. We now know that toddlers who have had more exposure to water and even basic swim skill instructions learn to swim and become water safe at a faster rate. Although most children will not swim independently for a few years, early exposure to water safety is crucial for all children.
Importance of Swim Lessons and Water Safety
Around one in every five drowning deaths involve children under the age of 14, with children between the ages of 1 and 4 years old having the highest drowning statistics. This is largely due to parents’ lack of knowledge of water safety. In most cases, you’ll find that swim lessons for kids can start at around 6 months of age with a parent accompanying their infant. At this level, the lessons are meant to help your baby get acquainted with the water and for you to learn water safety. While these aren’t “proper” swim lessons, they set the groundwork for when your child can be enrolled in the next level where they start to learn different skills. To make sure their first experience is as magical as possible, here are some tips to prepare for that first swim school visit.
3 Steps to Swim Lesson Preparation – From Fear to Fun, then to Skill Building
one is deathly afraid. So, water safety skill building starts with the basics – associating water with fun. Here is what you can do to set the tone for a fun and successful swim lesson with your child:
Step 1 – Prepare Yourself -
•A sk to visit a swim school class with your child. Some babies adapt more willingly than others to new people, environments and experiences. Visiting a swim lesson or school prior to getting in the water will help to gauge your child’s interest in the lesson.
Step 2 – Prepare Your Infant/Toddler
• I t all starts at bath time. Make sure bath time is a fun time of day, as this will help your little one to thrive in water, viewing it as something to be enjoyed and loved.
Step 3 – Support your child’s swim school visit
• E ase into the new environment. Make sure your first visit is a positive, gentle introduction to the multi-sensory world of swimming pools, lessons, and other parents/kids. In summary, by starting lessons early, you greatly increase the likelihood that your child will progress from fear to fun and build the skills and confidence needed for water safety and a lifetime of adventure and joy in and around water. Why We Chose to
Wait Until 8th As a parent to three 14-year olds, I’m often unpopular in my home. I have to enforce annoying rules like, “Homework needs to be finished before gaming” or “Kids owe Mom $1.00 for every towel she picks up off the floor” or the worst “No phones until 8th grade.”
It doesn’t bother me to be unpopular, but it’s bothered my kids a bit this past year. We know we aren’t alone as parents in our decision to wait until 8th grade to allow phones for our teenagers, as more and more parents we talk to are pushing back on the age that they get phones for their children. I consider myself fortunate to have grown up in Gen X - I had an analog childhood and a digital adulthood. Our world has completely changed from my childhood. There are so many great advantages to technology, but also some very difficult problems that have compounded in recent years. Below are a few of the reasons why we have decided to wait before getting phones for our kids.
• Cyberbullying is a real thing. As adults we see it constantly. When you are typing something in the vastness of the internet it’s easy to say something hurtful. And it’s almost always something that you wouldn’t say to someone in person. • Access to pornography, sexting and sexual targeting are everywhere. Relationships are complicated and hopefully we can help protect kids as they learn to relate and date. Did you know that most people who work in technology delay using it for their kids? Many don’t allow phones or tablets until high school. These devices are a distraction to learning and daily function and those who are creating them know this. As a parent today we are asked to make decisions for our kids that no generation has ever faced. And while those decisions might be unpopular now I hope that my kids will someday understand and appreciate our decisions. Check out waituntil8th.org for more suggestions and to take the pledge for your family. l

• T een suicide rates (and pre-teen) have jumped drastically in the last decade. Numerous studies have shown that social media and technology increase anxiety and depression. In previous generations, you might not be invited to a birthday party and felt sad about it. Now if you aren’t invited to the event, you can sometimes watch it happening live.

Name: Alyssa McGinnis Number of kids: 3 girls Kids’ Ages: 6, 4.5, 3 Your Job: Work-fromHome Mom Spouse’s Name: Ryan
Your Mom Tip: • Create a crafting day.
Get out those art supplies and let the children create masterpieces with simple items you have around the house. From paper snowflakes to DIY valentines, there are countless ways to let your child’s creativity shine!
• Treat the family. Let your
children pick out some creative toppings for a hot cocoa bar and then snuggle up in front of the tv for a relaxing day watching your favorite family movies. Your kids will love the treat of a fun hot cocoa bar and you will love the added bonus of being able to relax and snuggle together!
Order groceries online for pickup or delivery at your local grocery store. You will save time, frustration, and money. Once you have ordered, the website or app remembers what you purchased so you can quickly go back and re-order items. This is also an easy way to meal plan throughout the week.

Your Mom Tip:
I always keep a small sticky pad of post-it notes in my purse for when we use a restroom with automatic flushing toilets. This has always scared my kids so if you put a post-it over the sensor before sitting down, it won’t flush until you remove it. It works!

Indoor Winter Fun Sledding and skating are great winter activities, but kids tend to spend more time indoors in the winter. Help your children beat the boredom (and burn off some excess energy) with these lowcost ideas. Obstacle course-Kids can go under the couch cushions, through the kitchen chair legs, and around the rocking chair. Is the floor lava? Are there sharks in the water? Can they complete the course walking like a crab? Kids develop a variety of skills from obstacle courses, including body awareness, coordination, and sequencing skills. They also receive sensory input, which assists with self-regulation. “Laser” maze-Use crepe paper and masking or painter’s tape to create zigzag patterns down a hallway. This activity can be made easier or harder based on the child’s skill level. It can be varied to keep things interesting by including a timed element, devising new ways through the maze, or “rescuing” stuffed animals along the way. How many animals can be saved in one trip? Bring the outside in-When it’s too cold to enjoy the snow outside, why not bring the snow inside? Create a sensory bin with large tub. You may want
to place a shower curtain liner under the tub to prevent spills. Use eye droppers or spray bottles with colored water to make designs in the snow. Hide small plastic toys in the snow, pretend they are fossils, and use tools such as a small spoon or toothbrush to dig for the toys. Toy rotation-Create a toy rotation using boxes or plastic containers, and then bring out one box per day for the child. This can create a “newness” for the toys. Consider varying the contents of each box to promote all areas of development. For example, a box can contain a gross motor toy, such as a ball, a fine motor activity, such as art supplies, a thinking toy, such as puzzles and Legos, and a variety of books. Painter’s tape-Painter’s tape can be used for a variety of activities. Have your child help you create a bean bag toss on the floor. Create different shapes and assign different points for different shapes. Painter’s tape can also be used to create a road for vehicles. Get creative with turns, one-way streets, and furniture obstacles (if driving cars on the furniture is allowed). A painter’s tape spider web in the hallway is easy to create. Have the kids crumple up pieces of paper and toss them at the spider web. How many can they get to stick? Which works better—big pieces of paper, or small pieces of paper? This time of year can be difficult when everyone’s cooped up indoors, but with a little planning and a few low-cost supplies, you can fight boredom and promote development and creativity at the same time. l

Looking through the
Smokescreen of Vaping:
What Every Parent Should Know The use of e-cigarettes, also known as “vaping,” is becoming an epidemic among adolescents and teens. The number of teens who “vape” has skyrocketed, more than doubling in just the past two years, according to the 2019 National Youth Tobacco Survey. Today more than 1 in 4 high school students report vaping. Read on to learn what you need to know about these products and how they can affect your kids. What is vaping? Vaping is the act of inhaling and exhaling the aerosol, often referred to as vapor, which is produced by an e-cigarette or similar device. The term is used because e-cigarettes do not produce tobacco smoke, but rather an aerosol, often mistaken for water vapor, that consists of fine particles. Many of these particles contain varying amounts of toxic chemicals, which have been linked to heart and respiratory diseases and cancer.
mid-size, vape pens, vape pod systems like JUUL, e-hookahs, e-cigars, and more. E-cigarettes can be shaped to look like many everyday items, such as pens, USB drives, or eyeliner.
What is an e-cigarette? Electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) are batterypowered devices that can deliver nicotine and flavorings to the user in the form of an aerosol. Most have a battery, a heating element, and a place to hold a liquid or nicotine salts. Why are e-cigarettes unsafe for kids, teens and young adults? • Nicotine can harm the developing adolescent brain • E-cigarettes contain nicotine
What can parents do? • Do not use any tobacco products • T alk with your kids about the dangers of smoking and the importance of avoiding any tobacco use (including conventional cigarettes, smokeless tobacco and e-cigarettes)
•N icotine addiction that occurs with e-cigarette use may lead to transition to use of combustible tobacco products
• E ducate your kids that e-cigarettes contain nicotine, a highly addictive substance
•A ddiction itself, whether to nicotine or other drugs, can drive undesirable behaviors
• Advocate for comprehensive tobacco prevention policies (that include e-cigarettes)
What do e-cigarettes look like? E-cigarettes come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes, including mini (often called cig-a-like),

Plant-Based Eating
Without Missing Key Nutrients If you’re planning a plant-based diet or meat-free days this year, you’re not alone. U.S. consumers identifying as vegan grew 600% in three years, according to research firm GlobalData. There are many reasons to choose a plant-based diet: health, environmental concerns, even cost savings. But whether you’re thinking about transitioning your family to plant-based cuisine exclusively or just a few days a week, you might be wondering if there’s anything special you need to consider for your youngest eaters.
What about kids? It’s perfectly healthy for infants, toddlers and older children to eat a plant-based, vegetarian or vegan diet. Milk-based drinks: When it comes to milk-based drinks, babies should only drink breast milk or formula in their first year. There are vegan, soy formulas fortified with calcium and vitamins D and B12 available — consult with your pediatrician about what is best for your baby. If you’re interested in adding a vegan option to your child’s diet after the first year, ask your pediatrician what age they recommend introducing soy milk, rice milk or another plant-based milk. Solid foods: After six months, parents can begin adding supplementary foods, such as ground grains that are cooked very soft, mashed fruits and pureed vegetables. When introducing solid foods, consider things like tofu and mashed cooked beans.
Play nice with nutrients There are a handful of nutrients that you’ll want to pay special attention to when feeding kids primarily with plants.
32 |
February 2020 | thehoodmagazine.com
B12: This is the only nutrient that you can’t get from plants. Not getting enough can lead to gastrointestinal issues and neurological disorders, so it’s important to make sure your kids have a source of B12. Eggs and dairy work for some vegetarians; vegans should look for B12 vitamins or fortified foods like cereals and soy drinks. Iron: Nuts, beans, fortified grain products and vegetables all contain iron. Iron is an important nutrient for all ages: infants, children and adolescents. Make sure your selection is age appropriate though — nuts and chunky nut butters are a choking hazard for young children. Zinc: Needed for growth and sexual maturation, zinc is another nutrient that’s important for adolescents. It also supports the immune system and wound healing. Zinc is found in legumes, soy foods and oats. For older children, nuts and seeds are also good sources of zinc. As with any style of eating, you’ll need to put some thought into creating a well-balanced diet. That should include fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, and a small amount of nuts and seeds. If you’re interested in adopting a vegetarian or vegan diet for your children, talk with a dietitian, nutritionist, or pediatrician to plan a balanced diet. l

Sleep Well How do you feel today, mentally, physically and emotionally? Did you know that your entire day is directly impacted by the amount of sleep you received the night before? Even more important is the quality of the sleep that you received. Sleeping for eight hours is amazing unless those eight hours are not peaceful or restful. Waking up exhausted is an all too common theme in homes today. Adults sleep on average 7 hours per night. Sleep helps the body repair, reset, and be ready for what’s to come. Our brain depends on sleep for work productivity and concentration. Without adequate sleep, our brain begins to lack emotional intelligence which can result in poor judgement and even hallucinations. The number one brand in the bedding industry, Serta, is also the official mattress of the National Sleep Foundation (NSF). The NSF states we spend one-third of our lives in bed, which means one-third of our lives are predicated upon the mattress on which we sleep! Are you tossing and turning? If you are, it is most likely time for a new bed! The goal for sleep is not price, but rather the quality of the bed and sleep you receive. Again, how do you feel? Is it time for a new mattress? Is it time to quit tossing and turning, waking up groggy and worn down, and just miserable? If your answer is anything but a resounding yes, then it is time to find your mattress. It’s time to say no more too bad sleep, and yes to restful and peaceful sleep! l

Carbon Monoxide is named “The Silent Killer” because you can’t smell it, taste it or see it. In confined spaces carbon monoxide can render occupants helpless in minutes and left unchecked cause death. Obviously, this time of year the incidences of carbon monoxide leakage and poisoning go up due to the increased use of furnaces, heaters and fireplaces. Carbon monoxide leaks can also occur with the use of any gas-based appliances. Breathing carbon monoxide deprives the blood from transporting oxygen throughout your body. In effect carbon monoxide poisoning is asphyxiation. Low level carbon monoxide poisoning over a prolonged period of time and accelerated poisoning share many of the same symptoms. In either case if you recognize any of the following symptoms, turn off the source of the carbon monoxide (if known), exit the structure, and immediately call 911. Since carbon monoxide is flammable it is important to not do anything that might create a source of ignition via sparks or flames. Symptoms include: • Dizziness • Headache • Vision impairment • Disorientation • Muscle weakness/cramps • Nausea • Seizure Every year people needlessly die because of carbon monoxide poisoning due to poor ventilation, leakage and improper use of gasbased appliances and reckless behavior.
Prevention comes in many forms and all should be adopted to ensure your safety and that of your family, friends and pets. 1. Arrange annually to have a licensed HVAC professional inspect your home’s HVAC system and gas-based appliances and systems. 2. H ave your fireplace and chimney inspected. Gas fireplaces should be checked with the aforementioned, while wood burning fireplaces need to checked for creosote build-up and cleaned regularly. 3. I nstall carbon monoxide detectors. One should be installed in close proximity to sleeping areas, basement, kitchen and any other heavily occupied area. Test units monthly and change batteries with each seasonal time change. 4. Never warm up/run your vehicles in the garage, even with the garage door open. Carbon monoxide can seep into the house even though the vehicle may be exposed to the outdoors. l

Why Choose a
Winter Tire? Winter tires are essential to help ensure your safety while on the road to enjoying fun winter activities. It is important to install your winter tires once temperatures consistently dip below 45 degrees. At this temperature, all-season tires get stiff and start to lose traction, resulting in less reliable braking and acceleration. Here are a few benefits to making the switch for cold winter weather:

Rubber Compounds The rubber compounds that make up winter tires are designed to deliver the best possible traction in wet, slush, snow or icy conditions. All winter tires feature a tread compound that is engineered to remain flexible below 45 degrees. This allows them to retain traction where all-season tires begin to slip. Many winter tire compounds feature small “bite particles” that add extra grip for icy road conditions. In contrast, the compounds that make up all-season tires are designed to perform well in more moderate conditions, particularly when temperatures are warmer.
Superior Tread Pattern and Stopping Distance The tread patterns on winter tires are designed specifically for safer traction during harsh weather conditions. They create more movement and bite onto ice and any snow that may be clinging to the road. A more aggressive tread pattern also reduces the chance of snow build-up.
Stopping your vehicle on cold and slippery road surfaces can be challenging because your tires have less traction – the lesser the tread depth, the longer the stopping distance. For example, when driving at 50 mph on snow or an icy road, a set of four identical winter tires will help you stop much sooner than when driving in the same conditions on a set of allseason tires.
Severe Weather Symbol Make sure that your tires are ready for winter driving by checking for the Severe Weather Symbol (snowflake inside a three-peaked mountain). If this logo is on the sidewall of your tires, they have been tested and are reliable to perform under harsh winter driving conditions. Winter tires are the safest bet for your vehicle when dealing with regular snow and ice or weather consistently below 45 degrees.
