Sales Associate: Ralph Preziosi Jr Interviewed: Joe Abate History: Joe Abate has been in the pizza business for over 35 years since his father opened doors to his pizzeria in 1982, in East Meadow, NY. It was here at a young age that Joe learned the art of pizza making and fell in love with it. Joe’s love for the pizza business eventually led him to starting his own restaurant on Long Island. In 2006, Joe made the decision to move to North Carolina because of the great opportunity and demand for high quality, New York-style pizza. In 2012, Joe opened Mia Famiglia with the help of his wife, Sandra. Joe can’t express his appreciation for her enough. “Sandra is the brains behind the operation” he says. Since its opening, Mia Famiglia has become a staple in its community. What is the most popular item on the menu? The most popular item on his menu is his cheese pizza. He attributes the popularity of his pies to his days mastering the art of the NY-style pie back in Long Island, arguably the pizza capital of the world. What sets your restaurant apart from the competition? Joe says that the quality and freshness of his food sets him apart from the others, however, his dedication to the community is what really takes it a step further to stand out among the local crowd. Joe proudly lends his support and help to the VFW, police force and the community as a whole. He has received an award from the town of Indian Trail for providing free lunches for students during COVID, as well as an award from the Union County Sheriff’s department for his dedicated support. Why work with Ferraro Foods? Joe has a long history using Ferraro Foods, as his father had used them back in Long Island with his restaurant. When he opened his pizzeria in North Carolina, he decided to use a distributor he had an existing relationship with. He says both his salesmen back in NY and his current one have been great to work with over the years. Any advice for other Restaurant owners? “If you have a passion and dedication to owning a restaurant, it is a great business to have.”
