elcome to our first issue for 2021, and to Simona who has joined IDO to help with the regular and new features we have planned for this year. We’re looking forward to sharing new ideas and information with you, so if you have to postpone or cancel your weddings, eventually you can still have that perfect day.

FROM PAST TO PRESENT

Just over a century ago the world was recovering from a pandemic that, for many young couples put huge obstacles in the way of their romantic marriage plans. But they continued to dream and weddings took place. And, probably not surprisingly, this was the first time in centuries that couples did not automatically look back at how things were done, but chose wedding clothes, and receptions with a totally different vibe. Their celebrations were decorative and joyfully flamboyant and created an atmosphere designed to crush all the feelings and fears of previous years. We discovered while planning this issue of I DO, that, possibly due to a similar urge for optimism, these nouveau, art deco themes and sentiments are trending for weddings in 2021. There seems to be a retrospective sense of nostalgia around almost everything right now, but it is combined with a determination to seize the day and any possible way to celebrate something as special as a wedding.

“Our love could ignite this universe and set a precedent for all the world’s future flames ” - Jeremy Fall

How couples embraced their hopes for the future, after years of a devastating world war and a massive flu pandemic, now inspires us because, whatever is happening around us, it can encourage and sustain us through anything and we are so lucky we get to experience it and celebrate it for a lifetime, simply by saying I do.

The IDO team Please note that all weddings held during the Covid 19 pandemic observed the mandatory regulations that were in place at the time. And, that as these are constantly changing, different rules may apply for different weddings and dates.

ADVICE

It’s not how we planned it

I

t’s the same world-wide, practically everything we can do now is under certain conditions and, even after a year of whens? and what ifs? and hows? we’re still finding it hard, sometimes impossible, to carry on regardless. So while we can only speculate how long this will last, many future plans, weddings being one example, need a rethink. To say this is anything short of catastrophic sounds unsympathetic when your wedding has been on the top of your agendas for what seems like forever. But this is not necessarily an exaggeration. You have every right to be devastated. The opportunity to celebrate your love, and the ceremony and celebrations to prove it, with family and friends is in jeopardy. And whatever stage your preparations have reached from proposal to honeymoon, there will have to be some changes. You should calmly access the situation as a couple. This is not your fault, none of your loved ones are to blame. What it is, albeit

6 I DO

comparatively early on in your relationship, is the seemingly insurmountable problem that you’ve always told each other you can conquer, as long as you’re together.

from going ahead is just what kind of wedding it will be.

Plan a time to reconsider what you really want to do. It must be when you have nothing else pending, in peaceful surroundings, with no distractions. And you should both be open to all ideas.

may be affected if you delay months, or even years. Is it worth putting so much on hold for something as important as being married? That’s being married, not getting married because, despite the widely accepted idea that marriage is just a piece of paper, the two are miles apart. Just ask anyone who’s celebrating their golden wedding anniversary or even their first if you like.

Consider how other future plans and events

Wedding preparations are stressful enough at the best of times so give yourselves a break by eliminating some of those supposedly ‘must have’ elements that we’ve come to expect are essential for a ‘proper’ wedding. Be honest, many of them are probably not what you’d actually want if there wasn’t someone urging you all the time to consider ‘what people might think’. If ever there was a chance to really do it your way this could be it.

Be practical and list the pros and cons of any delay of your wedding date, bearing in mind that the only thing stopping you

By all means have conversations and look for advice, a lot is at stake here. But let your own future expectations, hopes and sentiments decide whether to postpone your wedding and how long for. Being married is acknowledging that you want to build the rest of your life together, whatever circumstances you meet. Celebrating a wedding with the limitations we face at the moment, and triumphing over them, is surely one of the greatest ways of proving what marriage really means.

THE BRIDES ON OUR POPULAR BRIDAL FASHION PAGES PLAY A VERY IMPORTANT PART IN EACH ISSUE OF IDO. SO WE THINK THEY DESERVE A PAGE TO SHARE SOME OF THEIR THOUGHTS AND FEELINGS ABOUT THIS AND THAT.

Our model JULIA VASSALLO, was delighted with the dresses she was able to wear for the shoot. Where do you live? I live in St Paul’s Bay. Where else would you like to live and why? I would love to live in a serene area, surrounded by nature and greenery as there’s something so peaceful about waking up to just the beauty of nature in its pure form. What’s the happiest job or career you could have? My dream has always been to travel the world, so a career that involves experiencing the world would be ideal. How do you like to relax? I love music, art and nature so when relaxing I make sure to surround myself with all three. Who are the people who make you happiest, for what reason? My family and friends as they taught me how precious life is, and that appreciating the smallest of things brings about the greatest feeling of happiness. What could the world do without? The world could surely do without negativity, hatred and selfishness. If only the world could be more tolerant to help build one another up, rather than put each other down, it would be a better place. And what does it need more of? Love and patience, as these would lead to a greater, sustainable and peaceful world. How do you feel about social media and what do you mostly use it for? I think social media has brought about great positive changes and has brought the world closer together. However, I tend to see it as being too influential, especially on younger people, as sometimes false images are portrayed. I personally use it for work and find it as a great means of communication.

WEDDING MAKERS

The Photographer THERE ARE SO MANY PEOPLE WITH DIFFERENT PRODUCTS AND SKILLS WHO CAN HELP MAKE A COUPLE’S WEDDING DAY SPECIAL. IN THIS NEW SERIES FOR IDOWE PLAN TO INTRODUCE YOU TO SOME OF THEM, BEGINNING WITH PHOTOGRAPHER DANIELLE CASSAR, ORIGINALLY FROM BRAZIL, NOW LIVING IN SLIEMA. 24 I DO

I

always loved photography, but in Brazil I never thought of choosing photography as a career, in fact I studied law for three years. My interest in professional photography started after I had my first child, back in 2010. In 2012 after studying photography for a whole year without owning a good camera, I decided to invest in one. My first wedding was in 2014. It was an elopement, and the couple, a visual effects supervisor and an artist, both from California, wanted me to photograph their special day. I told them I had never photographed a wedding but they trusted me. Even after all these years, their wedding is still one of my favourites.

Today’s couples want candid photography (spontaneous) and photojournalism (pure or assisted). They always emphasise they do not want too many posed photos. During the first meeting I ask couples about their wedding details such as location, times, and number of guests. I also ask them what they expect from their wedding photos. It is very important to meet them, even if it’s on a video call. After our first meeting, I send the couple a questionnaire asking for all the details of the day, what shots they don’t want me to miss, the names of the bridal party, groomsmen, parents, and so on. This way when I arrive on the day, I will be familiar with the names and roles of each person, and that helps during the wedding. »

» If the wedding is in a place that I never photographed before, I visit the location before the wedding. Also if the wedding is happening in a church, I try to go and talk to the priest or the person responsible for the church, as each church has its own rules and I don’t want to arrive on the day and find out that I cannot use the flash in a dark church or be told off for going in the area around altar without permission. Valletta is one of my favourite locations because you have typical Maltese architecture, the colourful balconies and doors, sea views... There are many beautiful places to photograph there, it’s quite impossible to get tired of it. Another location that I think is so inspiring is Ghajn Tuffieha and its surroundings, especially during the golden hour! For me it is important to capture impromptu moments because they tell the stories of that day. The mom and dad’s expressions when they see their daughter in her wedding dress for the first time. The groom waiting for the bride walking down the aisle, the faces, the laughs... When you look at those photos, it is when you get all those emotions back. Formal pictures are usually requested by the parents so they can frame them. Among the happiest and luckiest opportunities I’ve enjoyed while photographing weddings was one at the Saluting Battery in Valletta, the couple exchanged their vows, and during the first kiss a lot of onlookers started clapping and dozens of school girls cheered for them.

“I get some of the best shots during speeches and toasts, as it’s when people laugh and cry. It’s when I can get truly genuine feelings through photos.”

MUZA

L

ocated on Merchants Street in Valletta, with both indoor and outdoor spaces perfect for March’s fickle weather, this wedding venue marries cutting edge contemporary architecture seamlessly to its 500-year-old setting. Home to Malta’s national art collection, MUŻA, the Malta National Community Art Museum, occupies the former Auberge d’ Italie, the historic seat of the Italian Knights of the Order of St John. Originally designed by Girolamo Cassar in the 16th century, the Auberge is a fine essay in the Baroque idiom. Meticulously restored incorporating modern design elements in an elegant and crisp fusion, the EU funded project was flagged by the Guardian newspaper as one of 13 must-see new European museums, and by Architecture Digest as one of 15 noteworthy brand new worldwide museums that opened in 2018. Wheelchair accessible, the venue features its own exclusive catering facilities and flagship restaurant with a selection of bespoke menus branded and inspired by artwork in the four narratives spanning the 16th to the 21st century. Key pieces include those by Southern Italian artist Mattia Preti, British 20th century artist Victor Pasmore and Malta’s own top 20thcentury sculptor Antonio Sciortino. The venue is ideal for couples having had to postpone and downsize their weddings to a tighter guest list with seating arrangements in line with the new pandemic regulations. Couples can select from three main wedding locations within the building. The Camerone, with a seated capacity of 130 guests and a standing capacity of 200, was formerly the main dining hall or refectory of the Italian Knights. This large and long room offers plenty of space for socially distanced gatherings as do the other two available locations. With a standing capacity of 100 to 150 guests, the lofty and bright passageways, part of the 17th-century extension works of the Auberge d’Italie, impart light and air ventilation to the building. Finally, the extensive courtyard with its pale blue windows provides an exclusive outdoor context and a grand first impression for arriving guests. The stately square, with a seated capacity of 100 guests and a standing capacity of 200, is dominated by a central well, accentuated by a triumphal arch which is crowned by a statuette of St Catherine of Alexandria, the patron saint of the Italian Knights, and the coat-of-arms of Grand Master Carafa. Occupy just one area or mix and match between the three stylish possibilities, treat your guests to a unique culinary, artistic experience, and make this polished and current building the background aestheticto an extraordinary event. Unmasking your wedding makeup HAVING CHOSEN THE MOST STUNNING MASK TO WEAR FOR YOUR WEDDING, THE NEXT IMPORTANT QUESTION IS HOW TO BUILD YOUR PERFECT LOOK AROUND IT. HERE ARE SOME EASY WAYS TO ACHIEVE THIS. BEAUTY BASICS egin by cleaning and moisturising your skin. Then apply a matte face primer to soften imperfections, seal in moisture, give a better base for your foundation and control oily skin and perspiration. When the primer has had at least a minute to dry apply a water-resistant, smudge-proof longlasting liquid and powder foundation. There are formulas to suit all skin types and tones For extra lasting effect cover this with a powder foundation, using a foundation brush; sponges are too heavy. Hold the handle near the bristles for light, even distribution. Next, a translucent powder to match any skin tone and set your foundation. Use very little, just brush over the face, focusing on the T-Zone area. This will absorb any oil from the foundation.

B

while looking perfectly natural. For lovely lashes coat them with a primer to boost their volume and use lash curlers, then add two coats of long-lasting, waterproof mascara, or layer a waterproof formula over your favourite lengthening or volumising mascara. LUSCIOUS LIPS Colour in your lips with a nude long-wear liner, or one that is closest to the shade of your own lips, then apply a matte lipstick and re-line your lips to blend the edges. Blot with a thin tissue to absorb any emollients in the lip colour. Set by dusting with a whisper of powder or a finishing spray containing flexible polymers that prevent smudging, creasing, and fading under a mask. And remember, the shinier the lipstick, the greater the chance it will smudge onto your mask.

Finally, when you’ve finished setting your makeup, make sure you spritz the inside of your protective face mask with some setting spray as an extra layer of insurance.

BLUSHING BRIDES To create a sense of depth add both cream and powder blusher, in a taupe shade of blush, which looks good on all skin tones. For longer staying power start with the cream and set it with the powder. Practise the best ways to get a subtle look where the blush peeps out from under your mask. If you use a highlighter choose a powder. Wet or glittery is not a good look. EY ES RIGHT To be sure your eyes sparkle throughout, create a long-lasting effect with primer, then a cream shadow and gel liner. Set this with translucent powder. For eye shadow, try different textures by combining a long-lasting matte with a shimmery shadow for fresh and modern effect. Using eyebrow gel in a shade to match will build them and keep them in place

FACE-SAVING HINTS ◊ Mask wearing has meant reviewing makeup choices and habits because even wearing one for a comparatively short time can make your skin more sensitive, and some skin care products that you’ve used in the past may irritate your skin. It’s even a good idea to leave makeup off completely, and simply stick to mild, skin care products, while wearing a mask for any length of time. ◊ To be sure your skin is at its very best on your wedding day begin a skin health regime several months in advance. ◊ Apart from a complexion friendly diet, including litres of water, experiment with several makeup and care products to find the best ones for your skin’s health and to use on the day. This way you will avoid any scary or allergic reactions nearer the date.

◊ Use a moisturiser that matches your skin type after washing your face and before and after using a mask. This is important to prevent problems, especially if your skin is dry or sensitive.

◊ Although masks slightly protect from the effects of sun, cold winds and pollutants, chapped lips can often occur when wearing one. Covering your lips with simple petroleum jelly can help prevent this.

FORGET STAY-ATHOME STYLES AND GO FOR GLAMOUR OR EMBRACE A NATURAL LOOK FOR YOUR WEDDING DAY? WHATEVER YOU DECIDE IS UP TO YOU SO HERE ARE SOME IDEAS FOR ALL HAIR LENGTHS. SOME OF THEM ARE EVEN SIMPLE ENOUGH TO DO YOURSELF. OTHERWISE ZOOM IN ON YOUR FAVOURITE STYLIST FOR A STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE.

Hair hints for today’s brides IDO ASKED OUR FASHION SHOOT HAIRSTYLIST, CHRIS MIFSUD, OF MAF HAIRDRESSERS, WHAT ADVICE HE HAS FOR THE BRIDES OF 2021 Firstly, what conditions and requirements are there for brides who are going ahead with their weddings this year concerning things like appointments, whether a hairdresser can be at the wedding venue? Conditions and requirements are as the same as when one would attend a normal hair appointment. Masks should be worn at all times etc etc. We advise you to pre book your hair appointments, as you mostly do. Hair salons are bound by strict measures and protocols, issued by the health authorities. A hair trial, always by appointment, should be done a couple of weeks before the actual wedding day, and the last colour/ trim service to the bride, an/or team, should be done three days prior to the wedding day. As for the wedding day, in a midst of a pandemic most brides are asking us to do home visits in order to be in a ‘safer environment‘. What styling arrangements do you advise bridesmaids and other members of the wedding party to make before or on the wedding day? As mentioned before colours and trims should be done three days before the wedding. Having said this, if one of the team, or the bride wanted a complete change like a colour change or using hair extensions, this has to be done slowly and peak closer to the wedding day. Many brides might want to pay even more attention to their hair and headpieces to distract from their mask. What does a bride need to consider when choosing a flattering style to wear with a mask? Well, actually masks are a new thing for 2020 / 2021 and most brides are still keeping their desired looks using a variety of hair ornaments, ranging from fresh flowers to tiaras and combs. What

we’re seeing is that brides are complimenting their dresses with a mask made from the same material, or highlighting a detail of the bride’s dress. As for the bridesmaids, most of their chosen dresses are satin so opting for a satin mask would also be a nice idea. For foreigners and Maltese alike, if the bride is a bit outrageous, we are seeing also blue masks as this also counts for ‘something old, something new, something borrowed something blue’. What are the biggest hair trends for 2021 that you can see catching on in Malta throughout the year? 2020, was a roller-coaster so it should come as no surprise that 2021’s biggest hair and makeup trends tend toward the extraordinary. We’ve noticed that because of Covid, when it comes to wedding hair people are ready to glam it up. Everyone is so over not being social and staying inside that they want to have the biggest celebration while feeling the most glamorous on their special day. On the other hand some soon-to-be-wed women are more accustomed to the au natural effect that lockdown has spurred. Brides are leaning towards more natural, lived-in looks. Spending the better part of 2020 /2021 embracing your natural hair texture we recommend opting for an up do or down and tousled, lived-in, textured styles. It can feel a bit over the top right now to have every hair in place. Go for a more lived-in style which mimics the freedom we’ve been giving our locks and might make you, the bride, feel more like yourself.

Weddings held to end plagues WHILE WE LOOK FOR WAYS TO HAVE DREAM WEDDINGS IN THESE TIMES, HISTORY TELLS OF THE EXTRAORDINARY LENGTHS SOME COUPLES WENT TO IN PAST CENTURIES.

I

n 1918, when what was known as Spanish flu was devastating populations worldwide, two couples married in a ceremonies designed specifically with the hope of bringing this deadly pandemic to an end by following a tradition going back hundreds of years. The custom of a shvartse khasene, also known as black or plague weddings, is when a local Jewish community collectively paid for the wedding of a poor or disabled couple

who could not afford to get married on their own. It originated in Eastern Europe and versions of the celebrations varied according to the region in which they were held. But everywhere the reasons for the ceremonies were two-fold, to perform a good deed and to end God’s divine wrath. These were full wedding ceremonies, with everything that entailed. And they were generally boisterous, merry affairs because in those days it was believed that you were more likely to contract such a disease if you were anxious and afraid. In fact, it became popularly accepted that this was the way to ward off the effects of a pandemic and bring joy in the worst of times. And perhaps we can understand this very well today because of our own situation. What is possibly less understandable is that these weddings were celebrated in cemeteries. One reason being a tradition that the only way to stop a plague was to hold a marriage ceremony in a cemetery. This was based on the ancient practice of black weddings that took place in eastern European Jewish communities during outbreaks of Cholera and other plagues. There were no signs that they were successful. And on religious grounds they were condemned by community leaders. But couples who held such weddings considered

that seeing what should have been a joyful ceremony in such a dreadful setting would provoke pity from God, who would then show mercy by ending the pandemic. This provided a symbolic source of security which made the whole practice hard to suppress. People approved of the generosity of spirit and sacrifice shown by the couples taking part and the practice actually continued into the 20th century, especially during the great Spanish flu pandemic. Reports of these weddings were carried in newspapers and for the most part they were strongly criticised for having no true or recognised links to religion, and bringing disgrace on the community as a whole. However, they continued and, far from suppressing the epidemics that prompted them, they obviously just spread the sickness – hardly surprising when you consider that several hundred guests would often attend and social distancing was yet to be invented. But records tell that when the Spanish flu finally died down in 1920, Harry Rosenberg and Fanny Jacobs and Rose Schwartz and Abraham Lachterman, the couples whose weddings had prompted either gratitude or disgust two years earlier, were eventually recognised. They were honoured for their sacrifice and service to their communities.

THE COUPLE

Katrina & Brian 14 August 2020 Katrina Lautier 26, a teacher and Brian Falzon, 30, a baker, were married at Zejtun Parish Church.

A SURPRISE PROPOSAL atrina and Brian met in a very casual way. She was working in a kiosk when Brian came in with some friends for dinner. They certainly noticed each other but Katrina wasn’t looking for a boyfriend at the time. Many months passed before Brian persuaded her to go on an official surprise date. It turned out to be at a steakhouse and Katrina doesn’t eat meat. However, things flourished and kept going strong from then. “After four years we were determined to purchase property together and thus we started looking at what eventually would be our first home”, said Katrina Then, on Katrina’s 24th birthday, they went out for dinner with her parents as usual. At the last minute she learned that her in laws were joining them. This was quite natural, because she knew the restaurant they were going to was their favourite one. On arrival her father, Brian and his father went out for a cigarette. When they returned Katrina wondered why everyone except Brian sat down. But Brian went down on one knee and asked her to marry him. “Out of his pocket came a beautiful diamond solitaire, just the way I had always pictured it in my mind. I couldn’t help but say yes!” she remembered. Katrina had always imagined a fairytale theme wedding, all white flowers and greenery and gold ornaments. Brian didn’t mind so they opted for a classic chic wedding theme. Choosing their wedding invitations wasn’t an easy task. After visiting various suppliers and seeing various designs they just couldn’t agree on the one. Katrina believed the wedding invitation is the first insight into a wedding and they wanted something special. The couple visited Invites For You and found one they both liked. The invitation was in two layers. One was translucent with their names printed in gold, the other was a shimmery ivory card with their own wording printed on it. »

» A CEREMONY WITH FAMILY CONNECTIONS As Katrina’s father is from Zejtun, her happy memories of spending weekends at her grandparents’ house there confirmed the choice of getting married at Zejtun Parish Church. “As a family we are very much into St Catherine’s Feast so we were getting married on June 13th, just a week before the feast. But, luckily enough the church was available on August 14th, which was our new date”, Katrina explained. The priest who celebrated their marriage is a close relative who knows the couple personally. “He knew exactly what he was saying about our relationship, our journey, our love and our marriage”, Katrina remembered. Music was provided by Aurelio Belli and Gloriana Arpa Belli. Katrina’s only request was that going down the aisle she would have Gloriana Arpa Belli singing Beyonce’s Ave Maria. The flowers down the aisle, lanterns and amphoras made the moment even more magical. Katrina wore a self designed ball gown with a big bow at the back. She wanted a statement head piece and chose a gold D&G tiara, which her

parents also loved. Her bouquet of white roses and peonies and lots of greenery, was also just what she wanted. Brian was always determined to have a self designed blazer. He also wore gold cufflinks personalised with his initials, a lucky birthday gift from Katrina, bought specially for him to wear on their wedding day, which matched his black leather and gold frame watch. Brian had always mentioned that he wanted his wedding ring to be a mix of white and yellow gold. Katrina didn’t buy a ring. Her grandma had recently passed away and her wish was to have her wedding ring. Her mother gave it to her and it was adjusted and engraved. This, led to a lot of emotional tears as she and Brian exchanged rings at the altar. A MAGNIFICENT RECEPTION The couple arrived the venue which had been their first choice. As soon as they saw the Westin Dragonara Reef Club they fell in love with the pool, the scenery and the magnificent sea view. To top it all off the menu was amazing. The venue is beautiful in itself however Glenn and

Fran from Creations by H&S managed to transform it into a fairytale set up. The LED initials and their reflection in the pool were mesmerising, and the flower wall at the entrance was particularly liked by our guests. They also provided a memorable guest book so guests could have a Polaroid photo taken against it. “It was really nice looking at the photos and reading our guests’ wishes the morning after”, Katrina said. The wedding menu comprised finger food and additional dishes and the fantastic upside down wedding cake Katrina longed for. “The cake we cut was actually a dummy. The caterer showed us where to insert the knife. Meanwhile, the ‘real’ cake was being cut by the chefs to be given to our guests. We had three different flavours, almond, bacio and the traditional fruit cake”, she explained. Due to Covid-19 regulations there was no carvery stall but people were more comfortable with waiters serving them instead of queuing for a plate. Treats from the candy stall were packed for guests to take home. And cocktails were supplied by Damian’s Cocktails. Katrina’s father’s band, Versatile Brass, provided the music. And

their first dance, was Rewrite the Stars from the film The Greatest Showman, chosen for its message that no matter what others say, it’s up to the couple to rewrite the stars and stick together through love. He also surprised everyone with a display of fireworks over the sea throughout the dance. Father and daughter danced to Butterfly Kisses, as the lyrics refer to a man about to walk down the aisle. Guests were also able to dance around their tables creating a great vibe as people cheered and had a blast while keeping safe. A LASTING BOND “Planning and actually having our wedding was not an easy path considering we had to postpone our original one. However this tough journey made our love even stronger, we realised how much we both wanted to become husband and wife. It also strengthened our bond as a family both with my parents and Brian’s parents, brothers and sister”, said Katrina and Brian, adding. “They were all there to support us and give us a word of encouragement.”

THE COUPLE

Nicola & Justin 26 September 2020 Nicola Saccasan, 26, a senior speech-language pathologist, and Justin Montesin, 28, an assistant manager, banking and finance, were married in St Aloysius College Church, Birkirkara.

A SPONTANEOUS PROPOSAL icola and Justin met when they were still in Sixth Form so they have known each other since 2009. Nicola tells how the idea to get married came about. “Our proposal was a funny story since we were in Slovenia and I told the groom ‘This would be a nice place to propose to me’. He got down on one knee, in front of my whole family, and said ‘will you marry me?’ I said yes, thinking this was a joke, but when we went back home we made it official and started planning our wedding, which was initially set for April 2020 but was postponed to September 2020. The couple didn’t have a theme for their wedding, but their chosen colours were ivory and pale blue. Justin designed their wedding invitations, which were gold embossed on an ivory background. Nicola loves scented candles, so she picked an assortment of candles, which become body lotion when warm, to be souvenirs. »

» BACK TO SCHOOL As alumni of St Aloysius College, the school’s church was special for Nicola and Justin and was their first choice for their wedding ceremony. And the sermon, by Fr Jimmy Bartolo, who was their headmaster, was personal and very moving. Nicola had fallen in love with her dress before even trying it on. It was a heavily beaded guipure, mermaidgown. She didn’t want a tiara but managed to find an intricate matching headband from Valletta. She wore jewellery from Swarovski, and a diamond pendent and ring, her something borrowed, from her mum. Justin and his groomsmen wore traditional tuxedos. Nicola’s bouquet had the soft, natural look she wanted with different shades of white and dark green foliage. And her ring was custom made with diamonds. “Just being there in church and knowing that we were going to get married was enough. All the rest was a big, added bonus”, the couple said. A FAMILY RECEPTION Giardini Lambrosa, was the couple’s choice of venue, and the decorations by Creations at H&S included a stylish photo booth, which was a huge success. People took photos and the resulting personalized guest book made for a nice memento for the couple. »

» As lovers of soft rock songs the obvious choice for their first dance was Iris, by the Goo Goo Dolls. They included all their favourite soft-rock songs, played by Luca Xuereb Band, chosen because they are an upbeat band. There was no dance floor, because of the restrictions, but people danced by their tables. And everyone had a lovely surprise when the band asked the bride to sing a song to the groom. Nicola sang A Thousand Years, by Christina Perri. And the reception meant the world to Nicola and Justin. Their

grandparents were there, Nicola’s best friends were her bridesmaids, and her sister was her maid of honour. And, they had the kind of minimalist cake with a marble finish that she loves, from Elia Caterers. They were also grateful for the way, all their suppliers rose to the occasion when they had to juggle things around at the last minute. And for the bride’s mother’s help with a lot of the planning and the maid of honour, really helping out during the day.

THE COUPLE

Carl & Joseph 15 August 2020 Carl Caruana, 31, a hairstylist and Joseph Vella, 24, also a hairstylist, were married at the Falconeria, Siggiewi. THE IMPORTANT FIRST STEP hen Carl and Joseph bought their house together it was the first step towards their future as a new family. “Both of us always dreamed of getting married before starting our journey together as a Caruana Vella family”, they said. The theme of their wedding was blue and diamonds and their invitations, by Bonavia Printers, were made from blue shimmer paper with a blue stone placed between their names. And the wedding souvenirs, glass candle holders with a ribbon of stones all around the glass and a central blue stone, were handmade by Joseph’s mum Carmen.

DRESSED IN STY LE The couple’s ceremony and reception were both held at the same venue but in different areas. “We decided to opt for the Falconeria in Siggiewi because it was perfect for our wedding theme and we had the chance to decorate it from top to bottom in our style”, they explained. Their outfits were just perfect. They wore blue suits with white shimmer waistcoats and cravats. And their shoes were very particular – white with gold glitter, gemstones and metal points! They really stood out from all the outfits. “We really felt like princes in the outfits!” they remembered. A special touch was their buttonholes which were silver with stones including a blue stone in the middle. They exchanged perfect rings of gold, white gold and rose gold with a diamond in each of the golds. »

» “I always dreamed of having a diamond ring and Joseph made that happen when we chose our wedding rings”, Carl explained. They were the first rings we tried, and what is interesting in the rings is the date engraved on them; 4th July 2020. This was actually the original date we chose to get married and also marks Joseph’s birthday, but because of Covid 19 we had to change it, though we decided to keep the same date on the rings so we will never forget what an adventure it was from the very beginning”, he added. A FAMILY CEREMONY Joseph and Carl described their ceremony as something very important for them. “It was where we would say ‘I do’ for the rest of our lives! We had chosen everything from how to decorate it to the songs. We walked down the aisle with the song A Thousand Years and got married with Beautiful in White background music. Something also interesting was who married us. By coincidence

whenever we needed something from the registrar we always spoke to Roberta, even when we went to apply to get married we found her. So Joseph and I decided that since she was part of it from the very beginning then she must marry us. And so she did! “We got married under an arch of white linen! The carpet was blue and the chairs were white with blue bows! Everything was just perfect as we imagined. We walked down the aisle with our mothers beside us and surrounded by family and friends who really love us and support us! It was very emotional for us and our families! Both of our families had been through difficult times through our lives, like everyone else, and for both it was the first time that a son was getting married. We were both raised by our moms, since our fathers passed away when we were young. The similarities in our lives are what made us closer as a couple because we really could understand each other. It was a roller coaster of emotions but it was beautiful all the way,’’ they remembered. »

» RECEPTION, CONFECTION, PERFECTION Joseph and Carl chose the Falconeria because they could have the reception outdoors, on turf, surrounded by trees and decorate it from top to bottom! At the entrance was a guest book table with a pen made from a real feather from the Falconeria, with stones on it, and their pre wedding photo. All the decorations were glittery blue or white with diamonds. There was also a flower arch that lit up in blue, trees with fairy lights, and tables and chairs with white with blue decorations. They spent a whole day decorating everything and want to thank Glen from Creations by H&S creations for the impeccable service and decorations they had and for going out of their way to make the day perfect and honouring every promise they made. The couple chose Croce Bonaci to serve finger food at the tables, and said everything was delicious, the service was perfect and they had good advice on what to choose and order, by a company who were are not after money but client satisfaction. “The cake was our dream! There was a blue diamond on top and all the layers of the cake were covered with blue and silver stones ribbons. The toppers were our initials C & J, handmade by Carmen, and covered in crystals put in one by one by hand. It took her a month to finish them but the result was just magical”, they said. MEMORIES TO TREASURE Their first dance was very exciting since neither of them had ever danced using choreography and in front of people. Rachelle Muscat, from Strictly 360 Dance Studio, come up with great choreography, and had a lot of patience to teach them. »

» The song mix was I Don’t Wanna Miss A Thing by Bon Jovi, Marry You by Bruno Mars, This Is Me and, lastly, This Is The Greatest Show, from the film The Greatest Showmen, because it was the introduction song for a spectacular firework display by Bernard Cauchi Fireworks, which brought tears of joy and a memory to treasure for a lifetime. HEARTFELT THANKS FOR Carl and Joseph describe the roller coaster of emotions, stress and joy which ended up in a beautiful dream come true, and how they would never have done it without the support and encouragement of their family, friends and work colleges at Paradise Zone. And they have this to say to all couples in the same position. “If we had to do it all over again, we would just do it the same way with all its ups and downs. We really encourage couples to go on with their plans! Do not be afraid that the wedding will not be as dreamed of because you will be surprised how it will turn out! After all, the main part of the wedding is to get married and start the new adventure together. We can be proud and say that we succeeded in having a beautiful wedding in one of the biggest pandemics in the world! We are ‘Corona just married winners’ because we did not let the virus ruin our plans!!’ We should not be discouraged! Go ahead and have fun doing it because you will look back and be proud! Our advice would be stay positive, follow the guidelines so you and your guests feel safe and just have fun and enjoy it cause you deserve it!”

MAKING IT OFFICIAL elanie and Josef wanted to get married, to spend their lives together. So why not make it official in the traditional way; mostly, to be united as one in the eyes of God, and also celebrating with their families and friends. Little did they know what was in store for them. On February 9, 2017, Josef proposed at St Philip’s local band club in Zebbug, where they are both volunteers. “Everything was super organised, including a presentation on which Josef asked me to marry him, the beautiful ring, a cake and signs for when I said ‘yes’. I honestly had no idea and did not even get the slightest clue when, before going out, my mother told me to wear a dress, which I didn’t, hehe”, Melanie remembered. Because they both love flowers they wanted their wedding to represent this. Their theme was created with a flower wall, flower chandelier and loads of flower arrangements both in the church and at the wedding reception, along with lots of sparkles from fairy lights and glass chandeliers – basically classy and elegant. Flowers also formed the basis of their invitations, which a friend who is a designer did for them, and which they loved.

PERFECT CHOICES Being very fond of their patron, Saint Philip, meant St Philip’s Parish Church, Zebbug, was the obvious choice for their wedding. The décor at church and the grand flower display really stood out, and there was music from Destiny Chukunyere. Melanie walked up the aisle in a beautiful ball gown by Nora Naviano from Eva Mariee. It was the first one she tried on and even before she saw it she could already feel butterflies. “I instantly knew it was the one. I truly felt like a princess. I also chose a very long veil to complete the look and a gorgeous head band with small crystals”, she said. She carried a bouquet of beautiful roses and attached a pendant with two persons who were very close to her heart and unfortunately could not be at the wedding. It was simple and elegant, just as she wanted it. For Josef comfort was very important. He wanted to be comfortable and enjoy the day, so he wore an English style suit with a double breasted waistcoat and he loved the look! He also had a ‘polka’ which was given to him when he was still very young and was a sentimental accessory. Josef and Melanie always wanted completely different rings! »

I DO 59

» Melanie chose a semi eternity ring in white gold. Josef went for a gold and white gold ring. “They are both exactly what we wanted and we could not be happier”, the couple confirmed. GOOD ENOUGH TO EAT Melanie and Josef actually fell in love with their wedding venue, Giardini Lambrosa, when they attended a food tasting session there, since they had already decided on Elia as their caterer. They instantly liked its modern feel, which is quite rare in Malta as they found that most venues have a classic and rustic feel. Décor included a photo booth with the flower wall back drop and beautiful flower arrangements by Josef’s aunts, Emma, Nicolette and Mary Louise. They went for a lot of different kinds of foods. And, because they wanted their guests to love almost every single item on the menu, they took suggestions from both Clifton from Elia and their amazing wedding planner Katia from KG Events. “Our wedding cake was almond and bacio. It was plain white and covered in 32 carat gold foil, decorated with flowers and it was the most beautiful cake I have ever seen! I honestly have never seen anything like it!” Melanie enthused. Although they had only rehearsed one minute of their first dance, due to their wedding being postponed from May to September and then moved again to August. But it ended up being really emotional and they loved every second of it, and were super relaxed so it really turned out beautifully, especially once the fireworks were set off. HAPPILY EVER AFTER We would like to thank both our families and all our friends for their support during the most stressful part of our lives yet! If we had to describe our wedding day in one word it would be amazing! It was the best day of our lives yet, the most emotional one. When you wake up in the morning and realise that it is the day when you become one with your other half and soul mate, a smile creeps up instantly. We had been waiting for it for three and a half years and when it had almost arrived in May we had to postpone due to Covid. However we do not regret one single thing as everything still turned out how we wanted it. Making it happen in one week, changing the date on the 17 August, to get married on 22August, instead of 7 September was no joke! However, with all the stress mentally, the panic attacks, the emotions we have been through and the ups and downs we still wouldn’t change the road to our big day one bit as the most important thing of all is that we managed to tie the knot and start our new journey together as Mr & Mrs.

Cana’s Marriage Preparation Courses

I

n this day and age, when knowledge is accessible at the click of a button, what use does a marriage preparation course have? This might indeed be a pertinent question that comes to mind when one hears about Cana courses. Perhaps few have ever wondered why it is so important for a couple to enrich themselves with such courses prior to embarking on the wonderful, yet intricate journey called ‘Marriage’! One would not dare to drive a car without first taking driving lessons. Using the same logic, one does not apply for a professional post without having the requisite qualifications. So, how can one expect to be ready for marriage, without first having invested in proper training for it? A sound marriage preparation course allows couples to examine the reality of marriage, with all its ups and downs. There is no sugar coating. It is a journey down reality lane, exposing all the imperfections of marriage. However, it gives couples tips and guidance on how to build a sound relationship, how to build resilience and fortitude, be able to bring forth the beauty of marriage, be able to be truly there for each other and to be able to grow old together ‘till death‘.

This notion of a long-lasting marriage is often challenged by today’s society. However, a true Catholic couple’s mission should actually be to safeguard their unity forever, notwithstanding all the obstacles and hardships they might face. Pope Francis, in the post-sinodal Apostolic Exhortation Amoris Laetitia, which addresses the pastoral care of families, says that: “At times, the couple does not grasp the theological and spiritual import of the words of consent… It needs to be stressed that these words cannot be reduced to the present; they involve a totality that includes the future: ‘until death do us part.” (Amoris Laetitia, 214) Cana courses take place in most parishes, approximately three times a year. They are lead by married couples, who share their marital experiences with the unmarried couples on a voluntary basis. These leading couples themselves receive thorough training, via the Institute for Pastoral Formation, so as to be knowledgeable and skillful enough to impart the desired outcomes. Engaged couples are grouped with a leading couple and meet for 10 sessions. Experience shows that a great bond is formed between the various couples and the leading couple. Some sincere and long-lasting friendships have been born during 64 I DO

Cana encounters because of the intimate ambience that is created in sharing personal experiences. Each engaged couple is also offered a one-to-one session with their leading couple, so as to be able to discuss issues which they could have felt uncomfortable discussing within the larger group. Also, during this session the engaged couple can give feedback to the leading couple about the course itself. This helps a great deal in reviving and updating the course content year in year out. Discussion is key to such courses. In fact, even though the leading couples lead the sessions by using presentations, most of each session is taken up by several debate opportunities, during which couples are free to talk about the issue being tackled. The couples are given a handbook with exercises to follow throughout the duration of the course. Some exercises are meant to be done individually, whilst others are aimed to be worked on as a couple. The main topics being tackled during Cana courses are varied and serve to help couples reflect on all aspects of married life. The first session helps couples deepen their knowledge of each other, as it asks questions that perhaps couples do not always ask, even after being together for a number of years. The second session delves into the complex world of communication and offers effective ways for a couple to communicate to ensure a healthy, long-lasting relationship. The third session prepares couples to face conflicts in a healthy manner and guides them to resolve these conflicts in a timely and efficient manner. The fourth session is all about commitment – a concept which is frequently forgotten in today’s materialistic world. The fifth session lets couples explore their sexuality, whilst emphasising the beauty of a healthy, sexual relationship. The sixth session prepares couples for parenthood, as they discuss issues pertaining to such a difficult task, which comes with no instruction manual attached. The seventh session speaks about the holy aspect of marriage and the grace bestowed on couples as they receive the sacrament of matrimony. The eighth session helps couples take sound financial decisions. The ninth session talks about daily marriedlife experiences. The 10th session helps couples appreciate their own parents. Usually the course ends with Mass, for which each couple’s parents are also invited, and during which a certificate of participation is presented. The Cana Marriage Preparation course is a prerequisite for a couple to be married within the Catholic Church. It is suggested that a couple attends this course at least two years before their wedding date, so as to serve as an eye-opener to certain problems, and to give couples enough time to build a solid foundation for their future marriage. Through its courses, Cana Movement strives to “find the right language, arguments and witness to reach the hearts of young people, inviting them to take up the challenge of marriage with enthusiasm and courage” (Pope Francis, Amoris Laetitia, 40).
