MOOD BOARD

Y

ou are now holding a long-awaited copy of I DO summer issue. And, as we’d been hoping it is a triumph of love over all odds. Wedding celebrations are opening up at last and we are enjoying the excitement and expectations of terrific celebrations to come. So in this issue you’ll find features to help you plan the perfect wedding, while still respecting the remaining requirements. And sticklers for tradition can enjoy catching up with customs old and new that many couples follow on their wedding day.

SUNSHINE & CELEBRATIONS

But one of the most important sections is the one where couples who have said ‘I do’ share their stories of their special day. For over a year this has proved a challenge. Some have cancelled or postponed their celebrations, others have gone for it and held their wedding anyway. As regulations changed, sometimes at the 11th hour, these couples faced heartache, rearrangements and dramas every step of the way. Details that are important to what should be one of the greatest days of their lives, and the joy of sharing their celebration with others, were compromised. But the most impressive thing is that all the couples who went ahead anyway were certain they had done the right thing. And that they had had the best day, ever. It is a wonderful example of how all weddings can be very different but each one still creates the sentiment and celebration it deserves.

“And in the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make ” - The Beatles

And we can see very clearly in the wedding stories pages how love conquered everything when some of these couples said ‘I do’.

The IDO team Please note that all weddings held during the Covid 19 pandemic observed the mandatory regulations that were in place at the time. And, that as these are constantly changing, different rules may apply for different weddings and dates.

ADVICE

Just friends and family CHOOSING YOUR WEDDING GUESTS IS NEVER SIMPLE, WHETHER NUMBERS ARE LIMITED OR NOT eciding who will attend is more important than you can imagine. It can influence anything from the time of year your wedding takes place to the venue, which you may have to consider for its accessibility; or the catering to allow for certain guests' dietary needs; or which of your family and friends need to socially distance as much to avoid World War III as a virus attack.

D

So where to start? With a list, and at least a ball-park number of how many you can stretch to. Tempting as it is to invite hundreds of guests, possibly with the hope that their gifts will go towards the celebrations, it rather defeats the idea of sharing such a special day with only the people who mean the most to you. And, remember that if you are not actually paying for the wedding, whoever is picking up most of the tab will want to choose some guests as well. You may not particularly like these people, or even know them, but for

6 I DO

whatever reason try to accept why they are being invited.

Don't let guilt be your guide. You are not bound to choose guests just because you went to their weddings. Nor are relations you hardly ever see more entitled to an invitation than close friends. This is one occasion where blood shouldn't be thicker than water. Choosing from work colleagues can be very tricky. Avoid hurt feelings by not bringing up your wedding plans regularly from the minute you announce you're engaged. Then invite just your closest colleagues, like those who are also friends outside work. You are really not obliged to include anyone else. Although you might like to invite a mentor or boss in appreciation for any special help or support they have given you. Two other categories will also need considering. They are the plus ones and

children. Honestly there's no easy answer to this one. Ban plus ones and a cry goes up from those singletons who dread going to a wedding alone, and they have a point. Ban children and their parents inevitably start pushing for theirs to be an exception. But if you do want or have to make a stand on either be firm. Plus ones should be limited to fiancés. But do make special arrangements for members of the bridal party and groomsmen to look out for guests who are on their own and if your wedding is a seated one make sure they are with a welcoming group. Children can be limited to flower girls and ring bearers from family members or godchildren only. By doing this you may well be doing their parents a favour in the long run. Finally, have a list of guests you can safely ask to your wedding a bit closer to the date. There may well be some guests who cannot save or make the date, and as long as you get your invitations out early enough you will be able to replace them without anyone feeling that they are in the second division.

F

or our summer issue, as usual we’ve chosen wedding cocktails to match our theme colours. Blue is a popular colour for weddings and it represents love, purity and faithfulness, which are all good qualities to bring to a marriage. Most brides traditionally include this colour in their wedding either as a piece of jewellery, item of clothing or in their bouquet. And this year a beautiful blue, to match our summer skies, and a shot of sunshine yellow, just happen to be on 2021’s top wedding shades list.

Meet our

model

THE BRIDES ON OUR POPULAR BRIDAL FASHION PAGES PLAY A VERY IMPORTANT PART IN EACH ISSUE OF IDO. SO WE THINK THEY DESERVE A PAGE TO SHARE SOME OF THEIR THOUGHTS AND FEELINGS ABOUT THIS AND THAT.

Our model, ELLA PORTELLI, braved a painful boating accident to be our bride for this summer issue. But looking at her beautiful photos, who would know? Where do you live? I live in Sliema. Where else would you like to live and why? If I could live anywhere else it would be somewhere in Spain. It is country filled with beauty, nature and inspiring landscapes and I just love the culture there. What’s the happiest job or career you could have? I would be happiest, and am aspiring to be, both an interior designer and psychologist, that way I could do what I love most and help others. How do you like to relax? I enjoy painting when I want to unwind and like to relax by having a chat with a good friend and a nice cold drink by the beach. Who are the people who make you happiest, for what reason? I like to surround myself with good friends and feel happiest with them, my family, loving partner and adorable little puppy, Lola. What could the world do without, and what does it need more of? I truly believe the world could do better without cruelty, and with more kindness. Life is beautiful, but it can be tough and you can never go wrong by just choosing to be kind. You never truly know what someone is going or has been through. A few nice words can have a greater impact than you would think. How do you feel about social media and what do you mostly use it for? Although lately I make it a point to reduce the amount of time I spend on social media, I do like to use it to capture moments, keep in touch and feel inspired by others.

WEDDING MAKERS

IN THIS SERIES WE INTRODUCE SOME OF THE PEOPLE WHOSE PRODUCTS AND SKILLS MAKE A COUPLE’S WEDDING DAY SPECIAL. FOR OUR SUMMER ISSUE WE WERE THINKING OF COOL COCKTAILS SO WE SPOKE TO DAMIAN MUSCAT, THE EXPERT BEHIND THE BAR FOR ANY WEDDING RECEPTION.

The cocktail shaker HOW DID Y OU FIRST BECOME ESPECIALLY INTERESTED IN COCKTAILS, AND WHERE HAS THAT INTEREST TAKEN Y OU? Since I was 16, I started working in the hospitality industry. I became attached to this sector and mostly to cocktail making. Cocktail making has long been my passion, and creating exciting and new cocktails is an extension of it. After many years of perfecting my craft, I have now run my own mobile cocktail bar for the past 16 years, and Damian’s Cocktails is now one of the leading mobile cocktail bars in Malta and Gozo. HOW HAS PEOPLE’S TASTE FOR CERTAIN INGREDIENTS CHANGED SINCE Y OU BEGAN, AND WHAT ARE THE MOST POPULAR COCKTAILS TODAY ? The world of cocktails is so vast, and many professional barmen have their own ideas and creations. Having extensive experience in cocktail making makes is easier to understand people’s special requests, and to adapt new techniques which develop through the years. I could say that cocktails which were popular many years ago are still popular today, however we sometimes give a twist to the original recipe, making it more interesting and fun for one to try. However one could argue that Gin cocktails are becoming ever more popular than a few years ago.

24 I DO

IS THERE A LOT OF DEMAND FOR MOCKTAILS, AND HOW MUCH DO Y OU THINK PEOPLE APPRECIATE WHAT LOOKS LIKE A ‘REAL’ DRINK WHEN THEY ARE AVOIDING ALCOHOL FOR ANY REASON? Many responsible people will not hesitate to order a mocktail instead of an alcoholic cocktail, especially if they have to drive or if they think they are going over the limit. There is nothing wrong to sipping on a mocktail, and these are equally appreciated. It also takes creativity to prepare and present a mocktail, just the same as a cocktail. WHEN WEDDINGS ARE BEING RESTRICTED, HOW CAN COUPLES AND THEIR GUESTS STILL ENJOY COCKTAILS DURING THEIR CELEBRATIONS? Yes, even if open bars at weddings are restricted, and weddings are seated, we have adapted our services to table service, where our staff will take the cocktail orders from the tables, and deliver the cocktails directly to the guests. This will allow the couples and guests to enjoy their favourite cocktail at the comfort of their table. WHAT WOULD BE Y OUR MESSAGE TO COUPLES WHO ARE HESITATING ABOUT HAVING THEIR WEDDING THIS Y EAR, OR BOOKING FOR SOME TIME AHEAD, WHEN THERE IS SURE TO BE A HUGE RUSH AS THINGS ARE EASING UP? Obviously a traditional Maltese wedding will be a stand up wedding with hundreds of guests, however this is currently restricted. Having had some seated

weddings, and on a smaller scale, gives that intimate touch, were couples and guests still enjoy themselves in a different way. Following feedback from our past clients, they will not hesitate to repeat the same scenario, if they had to make the same decision, as it was still the best day of their lives. Yes, couples are still encouraged to place bookings for their wedding, from 2022 onwards, as it might be difficult to find their preferred suppliers, should they leave this till the very end. WHEN Y OU’RE NOT SHAKING OR STIRRING HOW DO LIKE TO SPEND Y OUR TIME? Having to run a mobile cocktail business on a full time basis takes a lot of my time. There are endless days of preparation for all the events, many meetings with clients, and so on. So free time is very limited. However the little time I have to spare, I prefer to spend it with my family and two children. Y OU ONCE CREATED A SPECIAL IDO COCKTAIL FOR US. IS THERE A WAY COUPLES COULD HAVE A UNIQUE COCKTAIL CREATED FOR THEM? This is something that many couples request and we are pleased to cater for. Many couples wish for a signature cocktail created for them, maybe with their favourite spirit, which will be served on their big day, together with the rest of the cocktails, and the name of the cocktail will be related to a thing that means something special to them. Let’s say their names, the place where they met, proposed, etc. Sometimes it could even be a name of their child or pet! I have heard endless name ideas but the important thing is that it is something special to the couple.

I DO 25

Please be seated THE CURRENT REQUIREMENT FOR GUESTS TO BE MOSTLY SEATED AT WEDDING CELEBRATIONS IS NOW A THING, AND THERE IS EVERY REASON WHY THIS CAN WORK REALLY WELL.

26 I DO

S

eated weddings may not be particularly popular in Malta, we are naturally gregarious and finger food and huge buffets are generally the preferred choice when planning a wedding. But when seated weddings do take place here, especially when one of the couple is from a country where they are normal and traditional, local guests are usually well impressed. And it is now clear that lots more couples will make the same choice, especially for smaller weddings, even after restrictions are lifted. The advantages are many. Not all guests want or are able to spend almost an entire wedding on their feet. The extra care and attention that obviously goes into choosing and serving a sit-down meal inevitably makes guests feel more spoilt and special. And there is an added sense of occasion, as they gather in specially chosen groups, at beautifully laid tables, to enjoy a celebratory feast. WHO SITS WHERE Lasting anything up to two or three hours, a wedding meal is an important part of the celebration. Choosing who sits where is one of the most important decisions a couple will need to make about their reception. Deciding who to place where is up to each couple and requires extreme tact, patience and a sense of humour. Of course the ‘top table’ will be for the bride and groom, the bride’s parents, the groom’s parents, the best man and chief bridesmaid, other honoured guests can be included depending on space. In the case of step-parents, they may also be included or be seated with other family members or friends. You will also need to decide whether to mix bride and groom’s family members, or have separate table for both families. For placing guests on the other tables consider if they are the type of people who enjoy mixing and meeting others or those who prefer to be with people whom they already know. Whether to mix friends and work colleagues entirely depends on your job description and the depth of you friends’ loyalty. It could work well or separate tables may be better. Never have a table dedicated to single guests. It can be awkward enough turning up at an essentially couples event without being singled out that way. If you have a ‘no plus one’ policy seat single guests with those who have similar interests, or mutual friends, or with the bridesmaids and groomsmen, who are well placed to make them feel welcome. Older guests on their own would probably appreciate being seated with members of the family who invited them – bride or groom’s. Children are another matter. Older ones can have a special table equipped to keep them there for the duration of the meal. And good luck with that. Alternatively hire some of those miracle makers who keep children entertained in their own special party area while the adults get on with the celebrating. And, however you juggle your seating arrangements these points always apply. It is definitely a good idea to separate friends and family members you know do not get on with each other. Don’t mix age groups on the same table, except whole family members. PERFECT SETTINGS Round tables should always be the choice if the venue is suitable, especially as they can easily seat an odd number, and they feel that bit more friendly. For long tables couples should sit opposite, or nearly opposite each other. The rule of seating men and women alternately is usual but it’s also fine to have same sexes sitting side by side too. The tables closest to the couple should be for family and closest friends. There are any number of fun ways to save your friends the mad dash to find their table. Use your wedding theme and colours for inspiration to choose names or numbers for each table. Set up a prominent list or chart to show guests where their table is and on each table put name cards on each place setting. It’s a good idea to print the names on each side so guests can see who’s who and introduce themselves, if necessary. Remember to give your caterer a copy of your seating plan, pointing out guests who have special menu requirements to make it easier for waiting staff. Don’t forget to give a copy of your seating plan to the staff as well in this case.

I DO 27

Sticking to tradition

WEDDINGS ARE ONE OF THE FEW EVENTS WHERE SO MANY OUTDATED TRADITIONS ARE STILL VALUED.

F

aint feelings of superstition, respecting the expectations of senior family members and guests and a longing for a ‘traditional’ wedding are some reasons why couples are willing to make room for various quaint customs at their wedding. But finding ways to update the old favourites means a 21st century wedding can still honour the age-old sentiments. Today fathers hardly give their daughters away, especially if they have forked out a considerable sum towards the wedding celebrations. And not every father can perform this custom. Another relative, godfather, even the bride’s mother can easily perform the role. Some couples choose to walk into the ceremony arm-in-arm, or a bride may simply walk down the aisle by herself. Seating arrangements are far less regulated too. Bride’s guests on the left and groom’s on the right is only a guide line. Nowadays, honoured and treasured family and friends should have the prime seats, at the front. Other guests may sit where they like on the remaining seats. If there are no ushers place signs at the entrance with this information. And when it comes to walking back down the aisle, you do not have to be preceded by flower girls. Flower grannies, a handful of BFFs, who were not attendants, even the family dog are all being invited to take part in this procession at modern weddings. During the ceremony, everyone listens to the couple’s vows; and here some of the biggest changes have appeared. Whether you choose

28 I DO

the traditional service vows or write your own they have the same meaning. Now couples feel free to make their promises in their own words. But one custom that no one would like to see lost is hearing those important words: ‘You may kiss the bride.’ Centuries ago, the kiss was as important as signing the marriage certificate in marking the moment the bride and groom are officially married. And it will always carry that magical association of the first kiss as a married couple. Another big change is the white wedding dress. Many brides now choose other shades. And bridesmaids don’t all have to wear the same style of dress, or carry identical bouquets. Unifying their look through a theme or colour scheme is enough. Attendants at today’s weddings no longer need to be specifically a best man, bridesmaids or groomsmen. Brides and grooms now chose friends or family members of either sex, as their attendants. At receptions the order of events is no longer set in stone. Speeches, cake cutting, the first dance and entertainment/s take place in their own time with everyone, including the couple relaxing and enjoying themselves. You could rethink the bouquet tossing ‘ceremony’ too. A belief that whoever caught the bouquet would be next to marry is beyond quaint today. Instead you could give it to a grandmother, place it on the grave of a loved one, take it to someone who would have been a guest but was not well enough to attend, or someone whose help with your

wedding was exceptional. Some brides choose artificial bouquets and often have them framed. Bridesmaids, of course, will want to keep their bouquets, or perhaps choose one of the above ideas. And, again, their bouquets don’t have to all be the same. Different flowers and designs in the same colour scheme can look stunning. One tradition that really deserves to survive, even the age of social media, is the invitation. The creativity and originality of an actual invitation makes it a joy to send and gives anyone receiving it a sense that they will be valued guests at a very special event. So, even though we are in a selfie obsessed world, surveys have found that announcing your impending nuptials on social media via an ‘engagement selfie' is less popular than you might imagine, with fewer than 20% of couples saying they would do so. But, while the old favourite traditions will survive to keep those sentimental touches that are vital for a wedding, it’s exciting to imagine what new customs couples will invent for their celebrations.

A GIFT TO LAST

WE ASKED MELANIE VELLA, OF M DESIGNS, WHAT INSPIRED HER COMPANY AND HOW TASTES IN BRIDAL PARTY GIFTS AND SOUVENIRS ARE CHANGING

T

he idea behind M Designs cropped up in my mind back in 2019 when my sister-in-law was getting married. I helped her create different items for her wedding day including robes, gift boxes, hangers and some other pieces. I always loved crafting, creating handmade pieces, and design in general, and I always toyed with the idea of having my own business. During the 2020 pandemic, I spent a lot of time at home (like most people!) and I thought what better time to start a business! I took the plunge – even though it was very risky, and a year later this dream is becoming more and more real. Today, apart from the fact that I create gifts myself, I also collaborate with different local artists to create a greater variety of gifts for my clientele as well as provide a platform for these local artists to thrive. HOW MUCH IMPORTANCE DO BRIDES GIVE TO GIFTS AND SOUVENIRS FOR THEIR BRIDAL PARTY AND GUESTS? I would say that nowadays, weddings are being taken to a whole new level. Brides and grooms go through every little detail to make sure everything is perfect on this special day for them. Naturally they give a lot of importance to choosing gifts for their bridal team, and their guests. Couples would want to show their appreciation or maybe they would like to propose to their bridal team in a special way – a way which starts this most magical time in their life. So, they are looking for special gifts for their bridal team, who have been chosen to share this special day with them, right up front and centre. This is where I come in – handmade personalised gifts make the receiver feel special and important, because it shows that a lot of thought has been put into it. Moreover, this also reflects the importance to detail the bride/groom are giving to their wedding day and all the prior preparations.

30 I DO

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE OCCASIONS AND EVENTS LINKED WITH WEDDINGS FOR WHICH BRIDES MAY LIKE TO GIVE A SMALL GIFT AND WHAT GIFTS WOULD Y OU SUGGEST FOR THEM? Brides may wish to gift small tokens on different occasions during the planning. They might wish to propose to their bridal team, or maybe give a small token of appreciation after the wedding itself. In this case, I would suggest something practical for the receiver – such as a mug in our beautiful, personalized boxes, or something which can be used on the wedding day like a gift box containing a satin robe, a pair of our lush slippers and a champagne flute. In summer, personalized swimsuits are also a popular option, especially if a pool party is planned. Some brides also get gifted our gift boxes with beautiful, personalised gifts inside by their bridal party, during their bridal shower. The most popular gift sets in this case usually include personalised champagne flutes for the bride and groom, or a robe and slippers to be used by the bride while getting ready, on her wedding day; or something more practical like pyjamas, matching slippers and soap. The options are endless really! WEDDING SOUVENIRS HAVE ALWAY S BEEN POPULAR BUT TASTES AND TRADITIONS CHANGE. WHAT ARE THE MOST POPULAR ITEMS MOST BRIDES LOOK FOR THESE DAY S? Donations to a charity organization have become very popular. However, wedding souvenirs are kind of expected by guests as a token of appreciation for their presence on the big day, so most couples still choose to give their guests a small token. Usually they choose their souvenirs based on the season in which they are getting married, or according to their wedding theme. For example, for winter weddings hot chocolate kits would be ideal. For a summer wedding, coloured fans are a popular choice. Scented candles, soap gifts or edible goods such as

HOW DOES M DESIGNS ENSURE THAT A BRIDE CAN REALLY PERSONALISE THE GIFTS, ACCESSORIES AND SOUVENIRS SHE CHOOSES? Planning a wedding is the most precious, magical but also stressful time in a couple’s life. At M Designs we take the gifting part off their shoulders and take care of it all, so the couple can enjoy this special time together. Our gifts are not ready made and our brides don’t just choose a design or gift pack off the shelf. Instead, they get the custommade design and combination they like, according to their wedding theme and budget. If a couple cannot decide or are confused over their perlini, in small gift boxes, make great souvenirs no matter the season. Other good ideas would be to give a personalised wine glass or champagne flute or a hand-painted keychain. All of these souvenirs would make sure that your guests remember the lovely time they had on your wedding day!

choices, I set up a consultation meeting to really get to know the theme of the wedding and the ideas they have in mind. Then, I will create the gifts or gift combinations according to what has been discussed. Because items are made especially for that specific wedding and are, of course handmade, the couple will have a tailor-made experience for such a special day in their lives.

I DO 33

A venue for all seasons Our fashion shoot location for this summer issue is Villa Bighi, and I DO asked Ylenia Montebello, Senior Executive of Business Operations, why the villa makes such a beautiful venue for a wedding.

VILLA BIGHI WHAT DO Y OU BELIEVE ARE THE MAIN THINGS COUPLES LOOK FOR WHEN CHOOSING THEIR WEDDING VENUE? Every couple is different and their needs vary, however I believe that the setting and feel of the venue is one of the of the most important things which couples consider when making this decision. Another point would be related to how many people the venue can accommodate. With the restrictions required this past year due to the global pandemic, Villa Bighi was able to host the maximum number of attendees due to the ample outdoor venues which we are able to offer. We’re proud of this, considering that not many local venues can say the same, whilst also offering the best view of Malta’s Grand Harbour.

34 I DO

AND ARE THERE ANY IMPORTANT THINGS THEY MAY OVERLOOK WHEN VIEWING A VENUE? We pride ourselves on having in depth viewing appointments of our venue with potential clients so as to help the couple as much as possible and make sure not to overlook even the smallest detail. WHY IS VILLA BIGHI SUCH A GOOD CHOICE FOR COUPLES LOOKING FOR SOMETHING UNIQUE AND SPECIAL? THE COUPLE

Laura & James 16 October 2020 Laura Griggs, 32, a general practitioner, and James Kelly, 35, a software developer were married at the Sanctuary of our Lady of Mellieha.

ON THE EMERALD ISLE fter Laura and James had loved and supported each other in their careers and through family ill health, they felt that getting married was the next step in their relationship. The proposal was special. They were taking a holiday in Ireland, where James‘s family is originally from. “We were driving around the Ring of Kerry and James decided it was time to stretch our legs in a secluded cove. We were walking along the beach, unusually I was walking ahead of him so I turned around. And there he was on one knee! We both don’t remember if I actually said yes, or if he actually asked the question ‘will you marry me?’ but it was a wonderful happy moment”, Laura remembered. Their theme was originally a ‘big fat Italian/Maltese and Scottish wedding’, in honour of the couple’s combination of heritages of which they are both very proud. But because of Covid, it slimmed down and became based on the pomegranate. “I wanted to use the pomegranate as it reminded me of my childhood in Ghadira, with wild pomegranate trees. I found a potter, who hand-made my beautiful burgundy pomegranates souvenirs, which I used for place names as well”, Laura explained. »

» The colours were navy and burgundy and Laura, who loves crafts but rarely gets a chance to do any, enjoyed designing the invitations on Vistaprint, working on a design that incorporated her love of navy and gold. A SENTIMENTAL CEREMONY The wedding ceremony took place at the Sanctuary of our Lady of Mellieha, which Laura described as a special place for her family. “My parents got married there 36 years before we did, as did most of my Maltese family members. Simply put, I couldn’t imagine getting married anywhere else”, she added. She and her mother arrived in a beautiful ivory Rolls Royce, whilst the bridesmaids were transported in a Volkswagon camper van.

“I vividly remember seeing my family and friends at the sanctuary and how it brought me so much joy I cried with the happiness”, said Laura. An arch of olive leaves and hydrangeas had been created around the entrance of the Sanctuary and the pews had small bundles of gypsophilia tied on the ends. The Sanctuary provided a red carpet and there was a harpist, violinist and a singer for the ceremony. Laura walked in to a wonderful rendition of Canon in D, by Pachelbel. She wore a timeless dress in ivory mikado silk; fit and flare, off the shoulder with a stunning train. Unable to find the dramatic cathedral veil she wanted, Laura purchased a lace veil online and hand beaded little pearls

onto all the lace details. It was her favourite part of her wedding outfit. She added a personalised cherry blossom head piece, and her beautiful jewellery was a kind gift from her mother-in-law. Her bouquet was white and burgundy flowers with the thistle as a nod to her Scottish husband. And in remembrance of her father Fermo, who had died the year before, Laura tied a small photo of him into it. James wore a kilt in his mother’s family tartan which is a beautiful mix of red and blue shades. He wore the full outfit including sporran and sgian-dubh, pronounced ski-an doo, which is a ceremonial, fixed blade, stabbing knife worn tucked into a sock. As a small gesture of remembrance he wore his father’s gold cufflinks for the occasion. »

» And the couple chose plain platinum wedding bands as they wanted them to be timeless. Before the wedding, the priest conducting the ceremony had asked the couple to send him a small message about each other. But due to last minute wedding panic, the bride never sent a message. However the groom did; in which he said ‘Laura is one of the most organised people I know.’ “The irony was not lost on anyone at the ceremony and it was a funny moment for both of us”, the couple said. A BEAUTIFUL, ELEGANT VENUE As a surprise for the mother of the bride, an old Mellieha blue bus hired from Malta Bus Coop transported guests from the ceremony to the reception venue, Villa Arrigo, chosen by the couple for its elegance and beauty. And they were so happy with how professional and kind the team were; making sure to keep all guests safe yet not lessening the wedding experience at all. The couple were greeted at their reception by Jackson Pipe Band playing traditional Scottish songs as they arrived. The entrance was decorated with large garlands of gypsophila and lanterns to light the way as the sun was setting. There were beautiful bouquets in the middle of each table, and on the head table a striking garland incorporating pomegranates with the leaves and flowers. Comfortable and intimate seating areas allowed the guests to mingle and take advantage of the whisky bar surrounded by hundreds of fairy lights. Laura and James chose a sit down meal for their guests. Originally, they had planned a large antipasti buffet offering dishes from Malta, Italy and Scotland. But to keep social distancing the team at Villa Arrigo offered smaller sharing platters at each table, so they still had a version of their initial concept. Laura has a sweet tooth so the dessert was the most important part of the meal for her. Each table had an assortment of sweets to pick and choose including cannoli and imqaret to represent the bride‘s Italian and Maltese heritage. James’s Scottish heritage was represented by a whisky bar with some of the couple’s favourite drams for their guests. Their stunning four-tier wedding cake, also by Osborne Caterers, had a beautiful watercolour paint effect icing, and mini macaroons. The florist added flowers to each tier and they had a personalised cake topper as the final embellishment. Reception celebrations started with a small fireworks display organised by the bride’s mother and the wedding planners, as a surprise for the newlyweds. There was also a photo booth where the guests could take funny photos and leave small messages in the couple’s guest book. »

“We were blessed that friends and family from abroad had come to share the moment with us.” – Laura & James

» Music was by Firelight Band and for their first dance the couples chose Ed Sheeran and Andrea Boccelli’1 s- Perfect Symphony, a wonderful mix of something Italian and English that perfectly symbolised their union. To close the night, they organised a surprise classic Scottish Song called Loch Lomond, which is traditionally played at the end of Scottish weddings. All the guests, no matter where they were from, loved it and it was a wonderful way for us to end the night. THANK Y OUS AND MEMORIES Organising a wedding during a pandemic,

while living abroad, is certainly a challenge and Laura and James have many people to thank for helping them. The mother of the bride, Tania, who helped to organise and plan the wonderful day; the groom’s mother Mary, who was always calm and supportive, even when the wedding couple were not; the bride’s sister, who organised a message video from all her friends to congratulate her and wish her well on the morning of her wedding; and Laura’s favourite snack of pastizzi and a frappuccino from Starbucks, with a small

congratulations message from the Barista, to help with her wedding nerves wedding nerves while getting ready for the ceremony. “We had the option of postponing our wedding for the following year and there were moments when we were close to doing so. But, as a couple, we had decided that getting married even if the number of people who couple attend was far less than what we had hoped was what was most important to us. And, we are so happy we did it!”, they concluded.

THE COUPLE

Josephine & Glenn 29 April 2021 Josephine Scerri, 27,a staff nurse, and Glenn Buttigieg, an NOC manager, were married at St Gregory Church, Zejtun.

FROM THE BEGINNING osephine and Glenn had always dreamt of having a big wedding. It was their wish to spend this day with their family and friends. “The proposal was very special. Glenn had prepared everything for this day and he proposed in our own field, while we were having dinner during sunset”, Josephine remembered.

J

A BEAUTIFULLY NATURAL THEME A shared love of nature was the inspiration for the couple’s theme. “We had decided from the beginning that we did not want a decorator for our wedding, so that all the decorations would be made by ourselves using wood”, they explained. The souvenirs and wedding invitations were both a real piece of work and they were all made by Josephine herself. THE CEREMONY They had agreed on the church for their wedding immediately. “We chose St Gregory church in Zejtun, one of Malta’s finest old churches. We have always loved this particular church and we have always known that one day we would get married there”, they said. During the wedding Mass, music was played by the Venus Harp Trio. And the couple exchanged rings by Alencia. Josephine wore a dress by WeddingBells. “My wedding dress was simply everything that I wanted. I knew it was the one from the first time I saw it in the wedding shop. »

» But they still managed to create a day which they will never forget. “We decided to go ahead with the wedding Mass as, after all, that was the important part for us.” Unfortunately, due to the restrictions on weddings, they could not have a wedding reception. But there was still a wedding cake, by Fayne at SheBakes. “We continued to celebrate this day at home with our families and we do not regret one thing that happened on the day. As difficult as it was, we made the day ours and we would not change a thing if it would happen all over again. Luckily enough, our families and close friends were all present on the day and that was what made the day unforgettable”, they concluded.

THE COUPLE

Alexia & Adrian 17 December 2019 Alexia Bellia, 30, a company director, and Adrian Borg, 30 self employed, were married at Lija Parish Church. IT ALL BEGAN WITH A CRUSH ack in 2001, Alexia had a crush on Adrian and used to point him out to her friends saying, “That’s the boy I’m going to marry!” But she never spoke to him. Some 15 years later, he added her on Facebook. After hours of non-stop chatting, they decided to meet up and a relationship quickly blossomed. Since they were both mature, they didn’t really think a big, dream proposal was necessary. Things were moving forward exactly as they wanted and when they felt it was the time to get married they discussed a date and planned the whole wedding in a year and a half! Our family gave their input. However they wanted to give us the liberty of choosing what we really wanted, rather than what they wanted. »

» Sarah Young was our wedding planner. With her experience and knowledge, she guided us perfectly and it went off without a hitch; the couple said. Of course, their wedding invitations were very formal, to reflect their theme. And the neat invitation included all the details their guests would need about the wedding, the menu since it was a sit-down dinner, and a request to RSVP. AN INTIMATE CEREMONY The couple wanted their formal, Christmas themed wedding to be

classic and timeless. And this is just how it was, being held in December with all the Christmas lights, etc. They had a customdesigned logo, which was included on all our wedding invitations, souvenirs, paper napkins, dancing shoes for the guests, dance floor logo, and even on each photo their photographer took of their guests. Lija Parish Church was an obvious choice for the wedding ceremony, considering Adrian was born and raised in Lija. Most of his family and friends live there too. The church was decorated in red drapes and Alexia’s choice of red and white roses. A small crib stood at the side. »

» The couple described their wedding ceremony as truly short, however quite interesting. “It felt like it was just us at the church”, they remembered. Alexia wore the typical dream dress of every bride. “The one we used to dream about when we were little girls. It had embroidery and even though it had long sleeves, it would not be considered as a winter style dress”, she explained. She also carried a bouquet of red and white roses Adrian’s outfit, including a velvet blazer and bow tie, complimented the winter theme perfectly. The couple decided on new rings as they wanted their wedding to mark a ‘new beginning’, unlike some other couples who opt to have their relatives‘ wedding rings. They simply engraved them with A&A 07.12.2019, both their initials and their wedding date.

Music at the venue was by Commander Jay. The couple’s first dance was You Are The Reason (Duet Version) by Calum Scott and Leona Lewis. Alexia’s father-daughter dance was to Bob Carlisle’s Butterfly Kisses. And for Adrian’s mother-son dance it was You’ll Be in My Heart by Phil Collins. After those special dances, there was a dance with their bridal party, which was quite a large group of eight bridesmaids, eight groomsmen, two flower girls and two page boys. “You can only imagine the time needed to teach 22 people a dance”, they added. For souvenirs guests received boxes of Ferro each, and were given pens and invited to sign the couple’s guest book, which featured photos from their pre wedding. Alexia and Adrian also made donations to four charities.

A SPLENDID RECEPTION Alexia and Adrian wanted to hold their reception at the Westin Dragonara Resort mainly because of their attention to detail, their amazing food, their being able to cater for a seated dinner for 340 guests, and a beautiful, simple wedding cake adorned with the red and white roses that represented their theme. There was an hour-long stand up reception when canapés were served while they greeted their guests as they entered the grand ballroom for the dinner. This meant not having to go round to all their guests themselves, and saved a lot of time. Afterwards, everyone walked to ‘The Pavilion’, which is situated at the resort for the after party.

A DREAM HONEY MOON After having the most amazing wedding, they flew off on a perfect honeymoon just two days later. They went to New Zealand, Australia and Dubai. This was planned by Bjorn Vassallo from ROCS Group. A stop at the amazing islands of Fiji was also planned. However, due to a cyclone, all flights got cancelled. Luckily, they had their trip right before Covid started. “In fact”, they added, “our wedding was one of the last weddings before Covid, which made it even more memorable, not just for the guests but also for our suppliers.”
