RIP Miss B: The Point Loses a Legend By MONIQUE ANDRES Daughter of Brenda Muschamp Bernard
M
iss B was a vibrant soul, one who lit up the room whenever she entered, right up until she became less able to get around. She was full of joy and always eager to help out anyone no matter what the problem was. Brenda Rosalee Muschamp Bernard was the sixth child of Celia Muschamp and Gerald Bernard. She was born and raised in beautiful Placencia where she attended St. John’s Anglican Memorial Primary School. Passionate about cooking from a young age she used to prepare meals for herself. Thereafter she started cooking with a friend Deborah McKain better known as “Debbie” with whom she opened “Brenda’s Café" in the Bakadeer area of Placencia. It quickly became known as one of the best spots
in the village for good food, and Brenda made a strong name for herself as a cook who knew what she was doing. At Brenda's Cafe the tourists in the village were able to have coffee and breakfast and through her ambitious spirit, she later built her very own landmark, “Brenda’s Caribbean Cooking” where she showed her true passion for the kitchen and love Brenda Muschamp Bernard proudly shows off a plate of for people.

Monique Vernon presents her work in Placencia on reef conservation to global attendees at the two-week World Merit 360 conference in London. By JOLIE POLLARD Editor in Chief The Placencia Breeze pollard.jolie@gmail.com
As the daughter of a lifelong fisherman, 24-year-old Monique Vernon has known the waters of southern Belize since she was a baby. “My dad used to take us everywhere on the water […] If I wasn’t at the cayes, I was on the beach or you’d find me in a tree.” Vernon, who now works as the outreach officer for coral restoration non-profit, Fragments of Hope, says as she grew older she learned that she could no longer take the wonders of the environment that were a marvel to her as a child for granted.
Goals that address global challenges including climate and environmental degradation. The student’s experience made such an impression on Vernon that she kept the opportunity on her radar. Just out of college and working as the office manager at the Peninsula International Academy, Vernon successfully applied in 2016, but was discouraged by the fundraising effort she would need to take on to participate. The 10-month studies also required attending a two-week conference in the Phillipines. Knowing that she couldn’t give up on the educational opportunity that felt like the right match for her, she applied again and put her fears of fundraising aside. By November 2017 she was accepted again and with the support of many people who believed in her vision, in August 2018, she was on her way to London.
Unlike other categories that call for nominations from the public, this award is given at the Minister of Tourism's discretion. This was a first win for Placencia.
Chabil Mar's Nikita Young won the BTB's Frontline Person of the Year Award, a third for the luxury resort. (Natalie Ranguy won in 2012 and Althea Schable won in 2011.)
Placencia Village hotel pioneer Mrs. Lydia Villanueva of Lydia's Guesthouse (founded in 1990) was one of 15 Belizeans presented the prestigious Meritorious Award by Governor General Sir Colville Young at the Tribute to Belizean Patriot's Award Ceremony in September, recognizing her longstanding and impactful contributions to public service in Belize.
This path led her to pursue a bachelor’s degree at the University of Belize in natural resource management. early we experience a change in season here in Belize. The change in seasons is the switch between wet and dry season, and at this time of year we experience more rain and more storms. This is also a time of transition for wildlife species, crocodiles included. At this time of year crocodile sightings often increase with the increase of rainfall. You may also find crocs a little closer to home as yards and streets become flooded. These flooded areas trap fish and crabs and make great hunting spots, as well as drier areas for crocs to get out of the water to warm up. In many of these cases the crocs you see passing or using seasonally flooded areas are transient. They are on their way somewhere, or will move on when the water levels drop again as things dry out. The important things to keep in mind is that seeing an increase of crocs at this time of year is NORMAL, and to follow wildlife safety protocol to enjoy our native wildlife and stay safe. Move Over Spinach and Kale; Chaya's the Real Superfood Clearly, Popeye has been eating the wrong greens!
By LYRA SPANG, PhD Owner, anthropologist and tour guide Taste Belize Tours tastebelize@gmail.com
A
lso known as “tree spinach,” chaya (Cnidoscolus acontifolius) is a little known superfood. Native to the Yucatan Peninsula, which stretches from present day southern Mexico into Belize, this leafy shrub grows easily from cuttings and can tolerate very poor soils. Big green leaves shaped vaguely like those of a marijuana plant provide bushels of nutrient packed greens. You can find chaya in both wild and cultivated form from Merida, Mexico to Punta Gorda, Belize and all points in between.
of calcium, 42-52% of iron, 27% of Vitamin A and a whopping 275342% of daily Vitamin C needs. Chaya has twice the iron content of spinach. Clearly Popeye has been eating the wrong greens! Remember, the ancient Maya peoples did not have a dairy industry as cattle are from the old world. No doubt chaya was one of the plants that ensured that they got enough iron and calcium in their diet. Today we can benefit from this amazing shrub that produces massive amounts of healthy greens year round. It’s as simple as sticking a cutting in the ground and letting nature do the work. Chaya contains hydrocyanic acid which means that it is not recommended to eat the leaves raw. Some people say it is safe to eat up to 5 leaves raw per day, but even this small amount may cause a cumulative build-up of cyanide in your system, and some individuals are more sensitive to hydrocyanic acid, so I don’t recommend it. To make sure that your chaya is delicious, nutritious and safe, cook it for 15 minutes before eating, as heat destroys the hydrocyanic acid rendering it perfectly healthy for human consumption. (Do not cook in aluminum pans as this can cause a toxic reaction).
In Belize chaya is common growing wild along the roadside in the Cayo district, and as a dooryard plant in all districts. At the famous Pop’s Diner in Cayo, it is featured prominently with a framed chaya leaf on the wall and fry jacks stuffed with chaya eggs on the menu. It can even be found here on Placencia Peninsula, growing along the sidewalk by the In Belize's Toledo district, a chaya conch shell jeweler and next to the revolution is quietly brewing in burrito stand across from Wallen’s the little Kekchi Maya village of Hardware. PHS and CRC Join Forces for Animal Welfare By PATRICIA CELENZA PHS Press Officer Placencia Humane Society placibr@btl.net
In October 1999, the Placencia Humane Society (PHS), a non-profit animal welfare group, was founded to provide quality professional veterinarian services to pets in our community. Over these 19 years, PHS has expanded to include a monthly vet clinic, a Feral Cat Program, the Seine Bight Outreach Clinic and a Rescue/Foster/Adoption Program.
habitat and surrounding wildlife. Over the past two and a half years, CRC has assisted partner organizations (such as Belize Bird Rescue and Wildtracks) in responding to wildlife injuries, many times acting as a mini-wildlife triage center until transportation could be arranged to the appropriate veterinary or rehabilitation facilities for injured or ill wildlife. Through national and international support and donations, CRC is in the process of building a fully-equipped wildlife triage center for the wildlife of southern Belize.
in animal welfare, including responding to injured animals, CRC has extended their collaboration partners to PHS. Through this collaboration, we anticipate we can obtain more of the basic veterinary equipment and supplies needed to care
for injured and ill wildlife, dogs and cats. This partnership will further enrich basic veterinary assistance to provide animals a higher chance of survival.
This collaboration officially began on Oct. 13, 2018 with a basic wildlife triage response workshop, provided by CRC supporter and donor Dr. Gary Harwell, a practicing exotic and domestic veterinarian based in Houston, Texas in the United Like PHS, fellow non-profit CrocStates of America. odile Research Coalition (CRC), CRC staff and PHS also continues to grow. Seine Bight Running Club Update By WANDA STAKUTIS Press Officer, Seine Bight Running Club gregvwandas@gmail.com
The kids have been working hard preparing for all the different races. Most of the kids just participated in the inaugural Splash Half Marathon and Relay Half Marathon and really enjoyed the experience. While putting this article together, the younger runners are getting ready for the next Young Runners for Life race being held on Oct. 27. Special thanks to Linn Wilson who has donated some stuffed animals, t shirts and Goss chocolate bars to be given out to the winners of this race. The race is open to all students ages nine to 18, and we are looking forward to having participants from the brand new Splash Junior Runners fromPlacencia. The last race in the series this year will be held on Nov. 24. At the conclusion of that finale race for 2018, grand prizes will be awarded based on results accumulated over the four races. The older students and young adults
are also training for the End of the World Half Marathon on Dec. 9. Additionally, we've been working on baton passing and sprints and are hoping to introduce some sprint races next year. We will be working with the youth to help them find the distance that works best for them, whether it's 100, 200, 400-meter sprints or middle distance and long distance. We now have between 35 and 40 kids starting at age six, coming out every Saturday at the early hour of 6 a.m.! (We are still looking for more coaches and support people, so we can work more one-on-one with the kids as they develop their running skills). We are all looking forward to next year. With the formation of Splash Junior Runners it gives the kids more opportunities to compete. While everyone who comes out loves to run there is a greater incentive to train when there is competition. Hopefully, we will see other running clubs for youth in Independence and some of the other nearby villages. See SEINE BIGHT RUNNING CLUB UPDATE on page 21

shared with coral reef restoration experts made me more hopeful than I have been for years about the future of Caribbean coral reefs," Dr. Wulff told FoH Founder Lisa Carne. Nedimyer, who is the founder of the largest coral reef restoration organization in the world, shared similar sentiments. “The restored reefs at Laughing Bird Caye National Park were stunning, but almost equally stunning are the early results you’re getting at some of the other restoration sites," he said. "You’ve “raised the bar” on what we are hoping to achieve, but you’ve also given all of us hope by now knowing it can be done and seeing it with our own eyes,” he added. Dr. Baums joined the complimentary remarks too. “FoH has documented multiple years of spawning from the restored colonies. While proof of increased sexual recruitment in the area is outstanding, I think this is not necessary to declare restoration efforts for the Acropora corals at Laughing Bird Caye National Park a resounding success. I do not have any suggestions for improving the fragmentation or outplanting techniques – they seem to be working great. FoH is a world-wide leader in coral
restoration, and I am grateful for the opportunity to visit and meet with so many dedicated coral restoration experts .” Fragments of Hope is delighted for another successful regional exchange visit; not to mention the perfect weather, and hope to become more active in exchange visits on all levels. Inaugural Splash Marathon and Relay Half Marathon a Success! half marathoners had to complete the circuit four times!
By PATTY RAMIREZ & WANDA STAKUTIS Organizers, Splash Marathon & Relay Half Marathon patricia@splashbelize.com gregvwandas@gmail.com
On Sunday, Sept. 23 Splash held their first annual Half Marathon and Relay Half Marathon. Founder and sponsor of this race Patricia Ramirez, recognized the need for an additional race to satisfy the love of running so many on the Peninsula have. Moreover, a race is always a good opportunity to raise funds, and in this case, the funds raised went to the Seine Bight Running Club. The Seine Bight Running Club has functioned strictly on donations for the past three years and having been in need of some supplies, this event proved to be a true blessing for the club. This race was open to all and had runners from as young as seven up to age 61! Since many runners, especially the younger set, struggle

Finally, be sure not to feed crocodiles. It is illegal to feed wildlife in Belize, and feeding of crocs causes them to lose their natural respect of people and potentially become dangerous to the community. We also recommend not throwing food scraps in the water if crocs are around as this indirectly feeds them and will give them motivation to stay close to people. Crocodiles are unique and important Belizean wildlife, and we

on the map!” Nancy hails from nearby Bella Vista Village and has spent the past four years living in Placencia. She says she discovered her passion for bartending at the Tipsy Tuna when her bosses, Gillian and Salva Zabaneh offered their staff enrolment in professional courses. The Zabanehs also fully sponsored her trip to Cuba after she placed second in the first National Bartenders Cup held by the Belize Bartenders Association in Belize City in August. (She also won the annual Old Master Rum Punch Competition at the 2018 Placencia Lobsterfest.)
Nancy and Stacy competed in the "Sparkling Cocktail" category where they were judged on their techniques preparing a semi-sweet drink using Cuban rum and Freixenet Brut Cordon Negro sparkling wine.
So what is this bartender’s favourite drink? “It’s an after-dinner cocktail with Travellers’ white and anise rums, coffee, milk and vanilla, and garnished with a strawberry and nutmeg.” It’s also the cocktail that won her second place in Belize. Her least favourite? She says doesn’t have one. “If I find something I don’t really like, I’ll find a way to fix it and add some love to it.” While she’s more than happy to serve you her creations at Tipsy, just don’t whistle or snap your fingers for her attention. “It’s In Cuba, both Nancy and Sta- annoying,” she said. Please join us for the seventh annual End of the World Marathon and Half Marathon. On Dec. 9, about 250 runners from 11 countries and 17 states in the United States of America will run the length of the Placencia Peninsula once or twice depending on whether they compete in the 13.1-mile half marathon or the 26.2-mile full marathon. As in the past, the event promises to be a truly rewarding experience that includes fitness and fun on our beautiful peninsula supported by over 100 volunteers from all peninsula communities. A distinguishing feature of our marathon, unlike any other international marathon, is the water station competition in which runners can enjoy the antics of our many entertaining station volunteers while they stay hydrated. This year there will be 21 water stations spread out over the 13.1-mile course. There is also "fun run" activities planned for kids age 12 and under. These young runners can sign up on the morning
of the race. Runners appreciate lots of enthusiastic spectators, so if you won’t be running, please join us to cheer on the runners. Beyond the fun and athletics, your registration fee will go towards educating Belizean children. All of the proceeds from the marathon go towards educational scholarships. Devin Guzman Joins Seine Bight Running Club Crew of Coaches By WANDA STAKUTIS Press Officer Seine Bight Running Club gregvwandas@gmail.com
Seine Bight Running Club has a new coach, Devin Guzman. Devin was born on June 6 and is 20 years old and has lived in Seine Bight his entire life. He is one of eight children. He attended Independence High School with a vocational major. Currently Devin works at PIA teaching drumming. He also works sometimes at Splash when they call him on an as-needed basis. In addition to being a coach for the running club he also coaches youth football and is very involved in his community. “I see the potential and skills of the youth in my village and want to help them achieve whatever they want,” he said when asked why he helps. He credits his drive and community spirit to his mom Vincent Guzman, grandmother Henrrita Augustine and girlfriend Dishawn. He says they help him to continue to do the right thing and “one day God will give you the opportunity
to fulfill your dreams." He also gives his mentor Kirwin Ramirez credit for helping him reach this far so far in his life. Devin loves all things sports and his dream is to be a professional runner or maybe a professional coach. When he is not working or coaching, he plays football, volleyball and basketball. He also teaches drumming to his friends and family in the village. In fact, he is so good at drumming he helped Seine Bight get two championships in Battle of the Drums, including the first one the village ever received. When asked what keeps him motivated to keep on helping wherever he can, he says it is his desire to set an example for his beautiful niece and soon-to-be nephew. His sense of community and family is so strong and something to be admired. For any of you who know Devin, it is not just the next generation in his family he is setting an example for; it is for everyone! I am proud to know this young man and know he will achieve whatever he wants. ▪
