Editor’s Note

Tēnā koutou

I’m sure like me you are pleased to have some better weather and sunshine after all the heavy rain the other weekend. Our thoughts are with those who were affected by the flooding including our farm animals. This month I wanted to mention who is on our team at The Woodpecker.

Our board members are:

• Ian Lennie – Chair

• Brian Attenborough – Vice Chair

• Nicole Graham – Treasurer

• Debs Taylor-Hayhurst – Editor & Secretary

• Andrew Retallick – Woodend

Primary BOT Rep

• Mark Paterson – Woodend

Community Association Rep

• John Canton

• Heidi Wood – PRGI Rep

• Tyree Woodham – Woodpecker

Distributor – Woodend and other areas

• Jeff Taylor-Hayhurst – Woodpecker

Distributor - Pegasus

These members all act in a voluntary capacity on the board and meet twomonthly.

Who sits behind the development of The Woodpecker?

The Editor manages the emails with community contributions and advertiser requests, the development of the template and preparation for

the printers.

The printers courier the Woodpeckers to North Canterbury where the two distributors each deliver to 40+ deliverers who each month, regardless of the weather, deliver The Woodpecker to your door.

It’s a slick operation and one which has operated for over 40 years starting as a one-page publication for Woodend and printed on a gestetner for those of you who can remember what one of those are!!

The other part of our ‘family’ are you, the readers, who provide wonderful feedback and contribute in many ways with stories, club or event notices and publicise your businesses for which we are hugely grateful.

Lastly, the wonderful children who search each month for Mr Woody Woodpecker. This month we celebrate 10 children who found him in July’s edition! A record covering two pages!

As always enjoy the read and remember we love to hear your feedback.

Woodend - Sefton Community Board

After a lovely lull in the winter weather the rain hit in July. Roads and reserves across the area were affected and Waikuku Beach Road had to be closed as Lake Waikuku formed. Council staff and contractors worked to get pumps in place and make sure the gate was open on the Taranaki Stream on the outgoing tide.

After every emergency event there is time for reflection and to learn for the next event and Council will certainly be doing this.

For future events remember that while Council will be checking roads and known problem areas they can’t be everywhere, and they need you to report any issues. For non-urgent issues e.g. drainage on your street, flooding on roads, or help with evacuation call the Council on 0800 965 468 (0800 WMK GOV). If there is a threat to life or floodwater entering your home call 111. And stay safe.

Funding Grants approved

• Waikuku Beach Surf Lifesaving Club - $750 toward a new garage door on the IRB shed for easier response to incidents away from the beach e.g. floods

• Waikuku Beach Indoor Market - $500 toward shelving and display units for the recently established monthly indoor market.

• North Canterbury Federation of Women’s Institute - $200 for hall hire and publicity for their annual craft day.

St Barnabas Church Update

In June, we had several parties to attend at St Barnabas. The most recent was a farewell party for two longstanding parishioners, who are moving to the other side of Christchurch.

Chris and Sue have been part of St Barnabas’ congregation for over 20

– more of a teddy bears’ picnic! A member of our congregation became aware of a group of families in the area who weren’t living in the best of conditions.

Badly fitting windows, no insulation and flimsy curtains made for some very cold nights for children and parents alike. She offered the St B’s folk the opportunity to collect hot water bottles for them – someone else suggested supplying furry covers for the bottles – and the St B’ers came through as they always do!

In Sue’s words – yes that Sue – “I arrived this morning to find this absolutely overwhelming collection of hot water bottles with the cuddly toy covers.”

years and in that time, have willingly served in so many different roles here, it took our breath away. They will be a hard act to follow and will be much missed for themselves even more than for the work they did. The other party had a somewhat different atmosphere – does the fact that it was advertised as the St B’s Mad Hatter Pot Luck Dinner give anyone a clue?!

By all accounts, everyone who attended had a wonderful time; and there was some great fancy dress on view, including of course some fantastic hats!

The other event wasn’t a human party

The lady who started the whole idea was just as thrilled! And we hope the children were too.

And our next celebration will be the ordination, as priest, of Reverend Steven Dunne.

He has worked tirelessly to prepare for this, dedicating himself to hours of learning – together with many hours of sharing his faith, his love and his energy with us.

If you would like to offer him your support and encouragement on this next step in his life, the service is being held on Friday 4 August at 7pm, at Holy Innocents church in Amberley. We hope to see you there – and have a great month!

PEGASUS SAYGo UPDATE

Pegasus SAYGo started back in March

2018 by Robyn Bain from Age Concern Canterbury.

Robyn started the group then handed

over to Rhonda Mather. In January 2019 Kay Mills stepped up to take classes joined by Collette McGregor. It’s proved to be a successful team and SAYGo numbers have risen over the last few years and stay at a steady rate.

Classes are a lot of fun as well as improving balance for people in their senior years. The after-class cuppa and chat proves to be popular too. Over the years SAYGo have donated and continue to donate funds to Age

Concern as well as several community groups.

However, every now and then we do treat ourselves, and at the end of June we decided a mid-year Christmas afternoon tea was a fitting reward for our exercising

Mayor Dan Gordon Update

Once again July has proven to be a wet and wild month in the Waimakariri. More than 150mm of rain fell in some areas between Saturday 22 July and Monday 24 July.

Council staff and Civil Defence set up an Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) on the Saturday to deal with the level of service requests and to monitor roads and river levels.

I spent quite a bit of time in the EOC over the course of that weekend - I like to keep up to date with what is happening.

I wish to acknowledge Council staff, contractors, Civil Defence volunteers and our emergency services personnel who worked tirelessly assisting residents with flooding and drainage issues and keeping abreast of the changing situation.

I also wish to thank the residents of Tuahiwi who self-evacuated at the request of Civil Defence when there were concerns the Cam River might breach its banks. A special mention must also be made of the Civil Defence volunteers who supported the welfare centre at Riverside Church in Kaiapoi overnight.

We are also grateful to Pegasus School

and the Waikuku community for the fantastic support when we needed to close Waikuku Beach Road on the Monday afternoon due to flooding. We really do live in a fantastic District where everyone rallies together.

We’ve received great feedback on the extreme weather videos that Council’s Communications and Engagement Team created to help our residents prepare for events such as this. If you haven’t yet seen these videos they are on Council’s website and Facebook and they offer great tips and advice on how to prepare for extreme weather.

They also provide information on

Civil Defence and on what Council does before, during and after these events.

Now as we shift our focus to the clean-up, staff will endeavour to make their way through the large number of service calls. These calls are triaged, with the most serious being dealt with first. Events like this can result in months of work to get through the volume of requests.

I welcome contact from anyone who needs assistance or has an issue they may want to discuss.

Email me at dan.gordon@wmk.govt. nz or phone 021 906 437. I’m here to help.

We are thankful to have such compassionate individuals supporting the Pegasus Community Centre and the wider community!

Lions Club of Woodend Pegasus

My name is Jeff TaylorHayhurst. I became President of Lions Club of Woodend Pegasus on 1 July. I believe that the next year will hold exciting times for Pegasus, Woodend, Ravenswood and Waikuku.

We have different projects for this year, however, we need your help. These Projects include working collaboratively with WDC, Woodend -Sefton community Board, PRGI and Kaiapoi Menzshed, to provide:

• Shelters in Gladstone Dog Parks

• Illuminating the Woodend War Memorial

• A new Welcome to Woodend and Woodend Beach sign

• Planting the area around the Woodend War Memorial

In addition we will be aiming to do more projects that residents need, as and when financial resources and people-power is available.

To achieve this we need the help of Tradies with construction projects. We need local sponsors, who love this area as much as we do. We are in urgent need of more members to join Lions to help raise money and lead projects.

Krystel Arboleda –Woodend Volunteer Brigade Support Team Member

This month, rather than introducing our Fire Fighters, we would like to introduce you to Krystel, who has recently joined our team. Of course, we need our Fire Fighters, which include the Chief, Deputy, Station Officers, Qualified Fire Fighters, Operational Support, Training Officers, Secretary, Treasurer and Welfare Officer but we also need our Brigade Support Personnel, who look after data inputting after calls along with a myriad of other office jobs. Its’ not for the faint hearted, as there is a lot of work that needs to be done after a call and training, as we are obligated to report to Fire and Emergency NZ, our Governing Body to make sure we have the necessary knowledge and skills within our Brigade.

“Hi, I’m Krystel Arboleda. My husband, daughter and I moved to Woodend about 4.5 years ago and have really enjoyed living in North Canterbury. During the day, I work as a Registered Nurse for Plunket. My husband is a Volunteer Fire Fighter and at the end of last year he told me about an ‘office’ position in the Brigade.

I thought it would be a really good way to support the community, so I applied for the Brigade Support position and started early 2023. I join the brigade team meetings and do the admin side and offer whatever support I can give on the ‘office side’.

I have really enjoyed learning all the new terms / codes / systems and getting to know and work with such amazing people. I feel very honoured to be part of the Woodend Brigade team.”

Thank you Krystel – we feel honoured to have you with us.

RONEL’S COMMUNITY CUPPA:

Brent Cairns was at the July Community Cuppa talking about food forests. Brent’s very interesting talk began with a little about the history of the area and the growing of kumara in the area that is now the Pegasus golf course. W ith the aid of a Powerpoint presentation Brent talked about how the idea of a food forest at Kaiapoi had grown out of community feedback after the devastation and red zoning that followed the 2010/2011 earthquakes. Brent is now involved in 33 food forests in the Canterbury area, including the recently created Pegasus Woodend food forest located in Gladstone Park. Brent’s talk was very well received by those present with some good questions from the audience. The next Ronel's Community Cuppa will be at 10am on Wednesday 9th August.

THANK YOU!

As a charitable trust, we can’t do what we do without the generous support of our volunteers and our sponsors, so it’s a HUGE THANK YOU TO:

During these colder months we are starting to see higher and more consistent amounts of rainfall, water is starting to fill up our biota nodes and the park is starting to spring to life with birds feeding and wading in the shallows.

The conditions are premium for planting at this time of year, and our team has been very active recently with planting native seedlings throughout the wetlands.

(Photos above and right)

Later this month we have the University of Canterbury’s Student Volunteer Army joining us for what we think will be an epic planting day where we are expecting a large turnout, lots of

great mahi and a rewarding day for everyone.

The Trust will also be participating as a community partner in the UC GEOG309 research paper again this year, with one of our rangers

Mikaela working closely with the students on an invertebrate project in the park.

Last week two of our rangers Zeta and Deane attended Braids annual braided rivers seminar in Lincoln. This was a fantastic event which consisted of a series of presentations from speakers including river care groups, Environment Canterbury, DOC, and other conservation groups. We learnt a lot of valuable information about river restoration, protecting native biodiversity and habitat, sampling

practices and data, agriculture and resource management, predator control and trapping on the Ashley Rakahuri and protecting bird nesting islands.

(Photo above)

Lately we have had incidents with rubbish being dumped in the park which is really disappointing to see.

Under the Litter Act 1979 it is an offence to dump rubbish in public areas, roadsides, parks, and reserves. Please report any suspicious activity by writing down vehicle details and location and contacting Waimakariri District Council on 0800 965 468, email

office@wmkgovt.nz or report the issue using Snap Send Solve.

If rubbish is being dumped on riverbeds, streams or creeks alternatively contact Environment Canterbury Regional Council on 0800 765 588 or use Snap Send Solve.

Save the date!

We will be having our next community planting day on Saturday 12 August where we will be planting tōtara and other varieties of native plants. We hope to see you there!

Dear Community Readers

At the end of Term 2 our Year 7 & 8 students were involved with United Nations Day. Each student was involved with making displays, including costumes, food and information about their country. Throughout the day the countries debated topics including refugees, climate change and a secret topic all about the war between Russia and Ukraine.

It was a wonderful day for all involved and everyone learned something from a different country’s perspective.

North Canterbury Debating Champions

Our Debating team won the

North Canterbury Primary Schools

debate competition. At the end of last term our Woodend School Debating team beat Ashgrove School in the final in front of a large crowd at Ashgrove School. at the end of last term.

The Woodend Debating Team: Kiara, Lachlan Jasmine, Keava, Indi and Jasper.

North Canterbury Korfball Champions

Our Years 5-6 korfball team participated in the North Canterbury Schools tournament.

Our team made it through the tournament unbeaten and into the finals against Rangiora Borough School with a win close 2 -1. 3 players were recognised for their outstanding play during the tournament.

Well done to Scarlett, Tyler and Harry.

Support Staff Week

At the end of last term, we celebrated support staff week. We are very fortunate to have such amazing support staff at our school and

Page 38 The Woodpecker August 2023

recognised them during the week for all the work, time and effort they make around our school.

Matariki Celebration Breakfast

During week 1 we celebrated Matariki with a variety of learning activities throughout the week. We celebrated Matariki with a shared breakfast for students and families on Friday followed by a special Matariki assembly where students were able to share learning from the week. We appreciate all the support received to make this event so special.

School Growth

We are experiencing considerable roll growth over most areas of the school and have just started our third new entrant class for 2023. If you have a child who is due to start

school this year or next and have not as yet let us know, please go to our website and fill in the pre-enrolment for your child. www.woodend.school. nz This just helps with our planning and predictions for later this year and looking forward into 2024.

New Hours

We’re delighted to be able to offer longer opening hours on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 31 July onwards. On those days we’ll be open from 9am to 4.30pm. On Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays we’ll continue to be open from 9.30am to 3.30pm. As our volunteer numbers continue to grow, we hope to extend hours on those days as well.

Volunteering for CAB

A heads-up that we’ll be advertising for volunteers at the end of August. Training will commence in late September and continue throughout October.

We’re looking for people who are good listeners, non-judgmental, willing to learn and keep learning, and confident

using a computer. We can promise an expansion of your knowledge, a great deal of satisfaction in helping and empowering a client, and a bunch of really nice people to work alongside.

If you’d like to apply, please get in touch with us for an application form. All trainees are fully supported with initial and ongoing learning plus a mentoring programme as you come up to speed with the challenges and pleasures of being a CAB volunteer.

Our Clinics

We hold fortnightly clinics that cover legal assistance, employment, budgeting and immigration queries. In addition, we have volunteers who are also Justices of the Peace, and they

offer that service when they’re on duty. Please get in touch for dates and more information.

Extra support even if you’ve already done some research

Even if you’ve already done some research, we’re happy to discuss options with you and perhaps find even more information to support you. It can be very helpful to talk things over before taking action,

Our Service

Do come and see us. We trained to listen and to research. We’ll deal with anything that’s concerning you no matter how big or how small. We’re here to help.

Pegasus parkrun Update

Pegasus parkrun #333 run report!

Given the icy cold 2C temperature, the freezy breezy bit of wind & the (not materialised) threat of rain - having 100 pegaparksters and another 5 noncompeting pegavollies (whoops we’re all non-competing, aren’t we?) was a fantastic turnout! You’re all PegaStars!!

Today, I’ve pondered about numberswe can make so much about numbers, can’t we? Well, I’m not going to buck that trend.

Some numbers are so spectacular, we even give them names, for example we had a Century of parkticipants on course today, who completed our TuTu triple Nelson event. And there were tutus in abundance,

you’ll see them in photos, you’ll see them in results, times and anywhere else I might be able to snaffle them from.

There was a half dozen (another name for 6) new, shiny red PBs today, belonging to Joe Kennedy, Lynn Malin, Rochelle Goosen, Joanne Shaw, Dawn Armitage and Karen MatthewsCongratulations to you all.

We had yet another half dozen fantastic First Timers today - 5 were making their debut in the world of parkrun, Alan Weaver, Brooke Fortune, Mark Shaw, Kelly Poehls and Kori Kessack were those debutants, while Sophie Weaver swapped the cold climes of ACT, Australia for a most unusually cold day here.

Welcome to the August edition of our newsletter.

We would like to start off by saying the biggest THANK YOU to John Archer for the enthusiasm and energy which you have given to many, many projects in our community over the past 55 years. John is stepping down from his role within the WDA, we wish you well John, and once again, THANK YOU for helping make our community a better place to live.

Another thank you is in order; Enterprise North Canterbury is helping give life to our very unloved notice board, situated outside Vege’n’Out. This board will have an updated map of the region, community services available in Woodend and up and coming events.

Interested community groups keen to advertise their services and events can email Jocelyn on Jghadamsfamily2@ gmail.com. The notice board will be refreshed every month

The Woodend Community Association are very lucky to have another bright

spark join our team. We are very excited to have Jasper Rosewarne onboard, representing the youths’ thoughts into what our community needs.

Our community food pantry is available for donations or if you need food, situated on the main road, in the WASP carpark beside the community garden.

If you are donating products, please only pantry stable items. Although the food is stored in a fridge, it is not powered. So please no items that need refrigerating. Thank you for everyone’s contributions.

The Woodend Community Association is looking forward to the remainder of 2023, it will be full of new ideas and projects for us to help make Woodend a better place to live.

If you have any suggestions on ways to improve our community, please be in touch via email at woodend. community.association@gmail.com That’s all for now. Have a fabulous month of August. The Woodend Community Association
