The Woodpecker Community Trust Volunteer Thank You and end of year evening

The Woodpecker Community Trust held their annual Xmas and Volunteer Thank You to the volunteers evening on 30 November. This was very well attended with almost 60 people who came along to The Bunker, Pegasus for drinks and nibbles.

gave a presentation thanking their volunteers, distributers, deliverers and board members.

Debs Taylor-Hayhurst, Editor thanked all The Woodpecker contributors both paid (advertisers) and community groups for their amazing contribution over the year.

The Woodpecker only exists because of its input from the local community. The now full-colour publication with a Dec / Jan edition reaching its biggest ever publication with

64 pages, started off a one-page leaflet printed on a gestetner over 40 years ago.

Editor’s Note

A new year begins and with that amid our summer break and lovely

warm weather we plan our year ahead,

and let’s hope part of those plans are those of you who haven’t promoted your groups can consider sharing your news and achievements. I’m pleased to say we are having new groups reach out to us most months which is great for our readers to see what is in our community.

I know I’ve mentioned it before but will again. As The Woodpecker Community Trust is a charity we rely solely on our advertising to pay for our costs, the main one being our printing costs. As such and because we are primarily a community magazine, we / I have to balance the advertising and community input equally as well as financially. Whilst we rarely have to say no to

contributors sometimes we have to due to space available. As such we have limits on wording for stories and one page for our community groups. This is to ensure we say no less often and share the ‘love’ to be as inclusive as we can to all who take time to send in their wonderful achievements and images.

I wanted to keep this short this month to allow for space for some small snapshots of our Xmas and Volunteer Thank You evening. Our board, distributors and deliverers

do us proud and it’s always good to recognise this and them at the end of each year.

Contact me via email if you want to find out more.

Mayor Dan Gordon Update

I hope you all had a wonderful summer break, enjoying time with your family and friends.

Just like many others, I have enjoyed spending summer right here in the Waimakariri District, getting to the local beaches and parks and most of all spending time in my own garden. I have a well-established garden and have been enjoying adding and removing plants this summer. In particular, I have enjoyed adding some vibrant new colours in the mix.

For us as a Council, we have a busy programme this year and will continue to work to achieve our communities’ expectations.

We will be working through our budgets and, given this current difficult economic climate, a key factor for us will be around rates affordability. We are committed to providing the highest quality service to our residents while keeping rates as low as possible. Another thing to look forward to is a chance to engage with you and hear your feedback on various issues. We will be holding hearings on submissions to the proposed District Plan throughout the year and we will be consulting on the proposed cycleways in the District as a result of the new funding allocations.

I will continue to work with my fellow Mayors to ensure a Three Waters

model is brought in that respects community property rights and voice. A key aspect of that work will be influencing the Opposition on the detail of its reform model, given that Three Waters reform is shaping up to be a key issue of the October General Election.

We will be working with other Canterbury Councils, where there is a lot of work being done within various forums to attract funding to our region.

We will also be navigating our way through a raft of other proposed Local Government reforms, including the Resource Management Act, and providing our feedback on the Future for Local Government report.

Our first Council meeting for the year will be on 7 February and I am very much looking forward to getting started on what is set to be a busy, but exciting year ahead.

I welcome contact from anyone who needs assistance or has an issue that you may want to discuss. Email me at dan.gordon@wmk.govt.nz or phone 021906437. I’m here to help.

NORTH CANTERBURY

Pegasus ladies biking group (The Cyclettes)

How time flies!

The Pegasus ladies biking group (The Cyclettes) is nearly four years old.

The group was started early 2019, by a small group of newly retired /semi-retired friends, that wanted regular exercise as well as interacting with ‘new to the area’ people. In the years since, the group has continued to grow, as have the length of the rides, providing huge health and social benefits for every Member.

By using mainly, the bike trails and devoted cycle paths, it is possible to cover more than 50ks return. Using the new cycleway, which winds alongside the Northern Corridor Motorway, one can easily cycle into Christchurch. This motorway path provides opportunities to also bike to Homebase (Marshlands), to Cranford St / Rutland St (Christchurch) or even (by exiting the Factory Road exit) out to Clearwater Golf Club. This bike trail winds through the Groynes before arriving at Clearwater.

The Café there is very accommodating of us arriving in a large group. Our bike group also enjoys the forest tracks, which take us from Pegasus to Kaiapoi, via the Tutaepatu Trail and the Pegasus Trail. We are seldom on tar-

sealed roads, it feels safer to use the trails provided.

E bikes are well entrenched on cycleways now and the recent announcement from NZTA (Waka Kotahi) that funding has been approved for a new connection from the roundabout at Pegasus to Woodend and on to Kaiapoi, was great news for any cyclist in our area.

Many of us now have good bike racks, so planning rides further afield happens regularly. A favourite is the Te Aro pathway (or City to Surf) starting at Fitzgerald Ave. This follows the Avon River all the way to New Brighton, winding through the red zone.

We invite new Members to come and join us, we meet at the Flat White Café every Wednesday and some Members who prefer longer rides meet up on other days as well.

We usually stop somewhere for coffee and a chat - we are social, social, social!!

As one member said, “A 2-hour ride is much more fun than driving to a gym to ride a stationary bike for 1 hour”.

Interested? Live in Pegasus / Ravenswood? Call 027 442 0899 or grab a brochure at the Pegasus Community Centre.

Woodend Bowling Club

There are a lot of happy bowlers at the Woodend Bowling Club. They are back home and playing on their magnificent new green. In August last year the old green’s top was planed off, new soil spread and a new green established. This was successfully completed due to the hard work of greenkeepers, Stu Jenkins and Brian Brown, along with a huge number of volunteers, both players and non-players, who put in the hard yards and countless hours barrowing topsoil etc. While the new green was growing players were accommodated by neighbouring bowling clubs.

The opening of the new green at Woodend at the beginning of January was welcomed by all members of the club who are delighted to be playing on such a smooth surface. Players are now catching up on club championship play, tournaments, and also relaxing and having fun on Tuesday and Saturday afternoon club days.

On Thursday, 9 February at 6.00pm the annual Community Bowls resumes. This is a fun but competitive event where

teams of three new bowlers from organisations in the community or family groups can come along and join in. You don’t have to be an experienced player or a club member. It is held over three Thursday evenings followed by a tournament on Sunday 26 March. Light refreshments are provided. To register for this popular event please contact Alan Pegley on 027 437 7260 or email pegley306@ gmail.com

Maybe you would just like to try bowls to see if you might enjoy it. Please ring the secretary, Sheryl, on 021 225 5778 for details. We are known to be a very friendly club and you will be made very welcome.

Tūhaitara Coastal Park Update

Ngā mihi o te tau hou and best wishes for the coming year from the ranger taiao at Te Kōhaka o Tūhaitara Trust. We hope you have enjoyed your holidays and have made the most of the fantastic weather we have been having recently. The past few weeks have been busy for our team who have been tackling weed and grass growth at the park. As well as cleaning up recreational areas, mowing and brush cutting will help to reduce the risk of fire in this warmer weather. Watering has also been on the agenda to help our newest plantings survive these rainless days and give them their best shot at establishing.

Our team has been checking traplines which have had consistent possum activity. Our most recent trapping records show that a total of 4700 pests (incl. possums, hedgehogs, mice, rats, and weasels) have been eradicated due to the high level of commitment and hard mahi put in by our volunteer trappers. (Shown in photo above)

Recently our team has come across

Great Willowherb growing in a small corner of Tūtaepatu Lagoon. Great Willowherb requires immediate attention due to its highly invasive and aggressive nature which poses a serious biosecurity threat in New Zealand. This is because it can cause significant damage to our wetlands and rivers. (Shown in photos below and overpage)

Great Willowherb can be identified by its bright pink flowers that are about 2 - 3cm in diameter which have a white centre, their stems grow vertically and are branched. Their leaves are shaped like willow-tree leaves and grow in pairs opposite each other, they are hairy, and tooth edged. If you think that you have identified Great Willowherb, please do not attempt to remove it yourself. Instead, we

advise you to take a photo, record the location and call Biosecurity NZs exotic pest and disease hotline on 0800 80 99 66.

love to see you there!

Woodend - Sefton Community Board

Welcome to our first column for 2023 , we have lots of projects on the go for the community this year and we’ll keep you up to date during the year.

Given the impact of SH1 on this area, the focus of this column is on SH1 safety, and the improvements planned by the NZ Transport Agency - Waka Kotahi (NZTA). A major focus of the Board for a number of years has been the safety for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists on SH1 in and around Woodend, Pegasus and Waikuku with the high traffic volumes on SH1, including heavy vehicles.

The Board believe that the Woodend Bypass is important to allow Woodend to become one community and not be divided by a very busy SH1 which will make it safer for all, and we will continue to advocate for it. However, until a decision is made to fund it some safety improvements are needed now because even if the Bypass was funded tomorrow, it would be years before it was completed . The Board’s thoughts are with the family and friends of the pedestrian, and all those involved, in the tragic accident that occurred in Woodend in January.

SH1 Safety Improvements - find out what is planned

Thursday 16 February - NZTA will be at the Woodend Community Centre between 3.30 and 6pm

In early December the Associate Minister for Transport the Hon. Kieran McAnulty came to Waimakariri to announce safety projects being funded around Woodend and Pegasus.

Pop into the community information session being held by NZTA on Thursday, 16 February, anytime between 3.30-6pm, at the Woodend Community Centre where you can look at plans, meet the project team and ask questions .

The planned safety improvements include:

• flexible median safety barriers between Gressons Road and Pegasus roundabout and between Woodend Beach Road and Williams Street

• changes to Pegasus roundabout including a proposed speed limit of 60km/h, reduction to one through lane, raised safety platforms and a safer crossing point on the northern side for people walking, cycling, and scooting

• traffic lights at the Woodend Road intersection

• left-in/left-out intersection at Rangiora Woodend Road

• roundabout near Woodend Beach Road intersection

• roundabout at the Williams Street intersection

Once detailed design is completed and resource consents obtained, construction is planned to star t in 2024. Full information at https://www.nzta.govt.nz/projects/sh1-north-canterbury-corridor/saltwater-to-cam/

Page 16 The Woodpecker February 2023

Woodend - Sefton Community Board

Funding for Cycle and Walkways

Waimakariri District Council applied for Transport Choices funding from NZTA for several projects to provide people w ith more transport options. Thanks to council staff for their work, as the two projects in this area were successful:

• Woodend to Kaiapoi shared path to link with Christchurch Northern Corridor

• Woodend to Pegasus (SH1) – Shared User Path.

The Board advocated strongly for these projects, and they will now go through a two-stage process with NZTA. The first stage is to further refine and scope project proposals, before construction begins in the second stage.

Response from NZTA to safety issues raised

The Board wrote to NZTA in September 2022 about some safety issues and the reply was received in December. Some specific things asked about and the reply from NZTA (in italics) are following.

Pegasus/Ravenswood roundabout safety

Above you can read about the changes to the Pegasus/Ravenswood roundabout on SH1 that NZTA have planned. The Board asked about:

• reducing height of the roundabout - the height helps to indicate to approaching drivers the presence of the roundabout encouraging them to slow down.

• an underpass for pedestrians and cyclists to safely cross SH1 – NZTA will look into the feasibility of an underpass at the roundabout to help pedestrians and cyclists cross the state highway between Ravenswood and Pegasus

• traffic lights if an underpass was not feasible – with the proposed installation of flexible median safety barrier north of Pegasus, the roundabout would operate as a turnaround for drivers travelling south who need to turn around and travel north to get to their destination and traffic lights would make this unsafe.

Waikuku Beach Road Intersection

Improvements needed at this intersection - there isn’t a specific improvement being designed for the Waikuku Beach Road intersection in this package. However, we will continue to review the situation in Waikuku.

Next meeting

Monday 13 February starting at 5.30pm at the Sefton Public Hall. All are welcome. If you want to see what will be discussed check out the Board Facebook page or the agenda at waimakariri.govt.nz/your-council/meetings/minutes-and-agendas around the Thursday of the previous week.

This Month with Harry

Carrying on with my life so far!

I still maintain a fervent interest in the Woodend Rugby Club.

Each year I like to ‘adopt’ a junior team, this time it was the under 11 and what a great bunch of youngsters they were.

I have been honoured to receive a life membership and patron of the Woodend club as well as a life membership of the North Canterbury Sub-Union.

For several years I joined my father and uncle playing in then Woodend ‘junior’ cricket team.

I could sit and watch cricket all day from Woodend junior teams to international games. To this end I am a member of the ‘Willows’ club who promote secondary school’s cricket. My sporting passion would have to be trapshooting or as it is more politically correct clay target shooting. Whilst not a world beater, in the early days I could hold my own and over the years have won several championships.

When local boy Gerard Eder was at St. Andrews, he got several likeminded shooters together and formed a team. I was invited to coach. In the second year the Stac team won the South Island secondary schools’ competition. This made the school hierarchy sit up and we were awarded a teacher to manage the team.

The following year it was up to Blenheim to compete in the New Zealand secondary school’s championship. When we arrived the man in charge enquired who and where from we were. On learning

this he said that if we watched we may learn something about clay target shooting. One of the team commented “that fellow thinks we are here for a picnic.” Stac won the national title by 54 points.

Considering it was a 300-point shoot this was pretty good and cheesed the north island off big time. I was with the college trapshooting teams for 30 enjoyable years.

During this time St. Andrews held their fair share of local and national titles. In March 2018 I was awarded a certificate of achievement by the New Zealand Clay Target Association for services to shooting and are honoured to be a life member of both the Canterbury and Amberley gun clubs.

For many years I have enjoyed hunting, mainly deer with the occasional foray into tahr and chamois country.

From a fairly young age I accompanied my dad or uncle into Lees Valley or the Mt. Somers area.

With my fathers trusty old single shot lever action 303 I bagged my first stag whilst still at primary school. Nowadays I just watch others.

With only one leg the hills have to be pretty steep to get round!

I no longer shoot ducks but pigeons who mess in my sheds and pukekos who kill ducklings, wreck nests and eat gardens are fair game.

Another activity I show great enthusiasm for is travel. Since my OE I have been lucky enough to return to the UK three times. To date I have circumnavigated Ireland seven times. I love the place; the people and the

Page 26 The Woodpecker February 2023

medicine Arthur Guinness makes.

Up to Fiji several times and the 10-day 10 country Balkan tour feature highly on the enjoyable list. Perhaps the most memorable sojourn was a three-week stint in the Marshall Islands. Brother Brendan, then a Mt. Cook pilot had been lent by the company to Marshall Island Air to fly their sole 748. They simply didn’t have enough trained people to drive the one plane. I joined the flight on its weekly run to Fiji and as it was a ‘jackup’ tour had to sit in the ‘jump’ seat with the pilots.

Stops were made in Fune Futu and Tevalu which were once part of the Gilbert and Ellis Islands but are now known as Kiribati. Majuro atoll which is the capital of the group is slightly north of the equator.

There is a 3-minute difference between the longest and shortest day. The highest point of the atoll is 24 feet, the height of a bridge between islands. The natives are Micronesian – smaller and finer featured than other ‘nesians’. The place is looked after by the Americans and as with tradition everything is solved by throwing vast amounts of money at it. At that time there was no age of consent and 66% of the population were under 12 – two lots of school were held each day. Of these children ¾ were diabetic. The administration encouraged them to consume vitamin C which could be obtained from orange juice. What they didn’t tell the mothers there was a subtle difference between orange juice and Fanta. Fanta was cheaper and easier to feed than orange juice

Happy new year to you and your whanau, we hope you are enjoying the amazing weather and have had a well-earned break over Christmas. We are refreshed and looking forward to the year ahead – we plan to continue to look after one another. ☺

WHAT IS A HEALTH IMPROVEMENT PRACTITIONER (HIP)? – Hi my name is Cara, my knowledge and experience can help with: - * Managing thoughts, feelings and behaviours * stress, anxiety, depression or feeling down * coping with loss * sleep problems * drug and alcohol problems * family or relationship issues, domestic violence and parenting * chronic pain * living with the side effects of illness and health conditions * navigating gender identity, sexual orientation. My appointments are fully funded and 30-minutes long. I work Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays and look forward to meeting with y ou for a chat.

VASECTOMY – Dr Roger Dehn offers “No Scalpel Vasectomies”. He is experienced in this specialist procedure. Book an initial consultation with reception. Your health insurance may fund this procedure.

MELANOMA – NZ has the highest rate of mortality from Melanoma . Check your moles for changes prior to the summer time with PMC. We recommend getting a full mole check regularly. If you are concerned about 1 or 2 moles which have changed an earlier and quicker appointment can be offered. Your health insurance may subsidise this appointment.

ADVANCED CARE PLANS - Living well your way with increasing health needs can take some planning for the future. Advance care planning is the process of thinking about, discussing and writing down your wishes about the type of medical care and treatment you want to receive in the future including end of life care.

GRIEF AND LOSS STEPS – Join Cara and Molly in March (date to come) group session to navigate and support the challenges grief and loss can bring short and long term. If interested in pre-booking please leave your details at reception.

KEEPING US ALL WELL- We continue to require everyone coming into the practice to wear a mask as per the government’s directive. For peace of mind, you may wish to wait in your vehicle – that is absolutely fine. Please just call us on your arrival with your details of vehicle. We will continue to screen patients and operate a “streaming” process – again this is for your protection, as well as our staff. This means you may be required to be seen differently i.e., in vehicle, in outside or inside treatment rooms should you have cold/flu/covid symptoms.

In a medical emergency, and if acutely unwell don’t hesitate to dial 111.

How are those New Year’s resolutions going?

We all love having a fresh start and every New Year we all go through the same motions to change things by setting ourselves goals. We have the best intentions but unfortunately life tends to get in the way. Many of our resolutions fail because

work? Firstly, your goals should be smart — and also SMART! Specific. Your resolution should be absolutely clear. Measurable. Decide mechanisms to track your progress to keep you focused. The Strava app is useful to do this, as is your personal parkrun profile page.

they’re not the right resolutions. Perhaps it’s too vague, or unattainable, or maybe you don’t have realistic plan to make it happen.

At parkrun we always see a healthy bump in participant numbers at the start of the year, and indeed this year has been no exception. In the past month Pegasus parkrun has had over 100 parkrunners six times. But every year we see these number lessen as life gets in the way of our aspirations. So, what can you do to make things

Achievable. Be realistic. Make sure you can actually reach your goal. Relevant. Does this goal matter enough? Are you passionate enough to keep working at it even in the depths of Winter?

Time-bound. Set yourself milestones on the road to your goal and celebrate them!

Every person has struggled to make new year’s resolutions and maintain them. If you have had a bad track record in keeping your resolutions in

The Woodpecker February 2023 Page 35
Pegasus parkrun

the past, do not beat yourself up too much. There is still hope. What sets success and failure apart is you!

If your resolution is about getting into better shape in 2023 then Pegasus parkrun can help!

parkruns are free, non-competitive, social 5K events where you can walk, jog, or run at your own pace. It’s for everyone - no matter your age, background, experience level, fitness level or gender.

Pegasus parkrun happens every Saturday at Motu Quay by Lake

Pegasus. Registering with parkrun is completely free (no catches!). It is a very friendly, supportive, and non-pressured environment. You don’t have to interact with anyone if you don’t want to – but it’s a great place to meet likeminded people from all walks of life.

Does this sound like something you might like to try? Check out our Facebook page (search for ‘Pegasus parkrun’), or have a look at our web site at ‘parkrun.co.nz/pegasus’. We are friendly!

PEGASU RESIDENTS’ CHRISTMAS ON THE LAKE

Thank you to everyone who came along to the PRGI Pegasus Residents’ 2022 Christmas on the Lake event on Sunday 04 December.

PEGASUS LAKE TRIAL DECEMBER UPDATE

We have had an update from Katie Coluccio, WSP, who is managing the Pegasus Lake Trial. The update is best read on our website (under News) so you can see the graph etc clearly.

PRGI PARTNERING WITH NEIGHBOURHOOD SUPPORT

We were so blessed with the weatherwhat a stunning day it was! We hope everyone enjoyed the event. View all the event images on our website

A big thank you to our sponsors once again - without them this event would not happen.

Please make sure you support their businesses when you can.

Website: pegasusresidentsgroup.com

In the event of an emergency, your neighbours are often your first line of communication and support.

This year the PRGI will be partnering with North Canterbury Neighbourhood Support to promote the wider adoption of Neighbourhood Support within our community. More information to come.

DOGS IN PEGASUS

Just a gentle reminder to please adhere to the Waimakariri Dog Control Bylaws and Dog Control Act to ensure both people, dogs and wildlife are kept safe in our community.

Waimakariri District Council and Tūhaitara Coastal Park have signs with clear instructions (see examples below), that are visible in key areas such as the lake, wetlands, beach, trails, retail areas, public parks, and sports fields. For example, at the lake, wetlands,

Facebook: Pegasus Residents’ Group Inc

Page 38 The Woodpecker February 2023

and retail areas, it is mandatory that dogs are to be on leads at all times.

PEGASUS COMMUNITY WATCH PATROL UPDATE

The PRGI Community Watch Patrol urgently need more volunteers as many of our long-standing members are retiring after years of loyal service.

Please make yourself familiar with this information and be respectful of others, keeping in mind that not everyone is a dog lover or feels safe around dogs, espec ially if they are not on a lead in areas they should be.

Please also remember to pick up your dog’s poo when out walking.

Let’s make sure everyone (including our wildlife) feels safe and happy when enjoying our shared community spaces!

PEGASUS COMMUNITY CENTREEMERGENCY HUB

The PRGI team will undertake training early this year to enable the Pegasus Community Centre to be used as a Community Emergency Hub in times of emergency. We will keep you up to date on this.

Website: pegasusresidentsgroup.com

Unfortunately, we may need to reduce the service or discontinue it this year if we do not get more support through volunteers from our community.

There are thousands of people living in our Pegasus community and we really need more to put up their hands to help.

COMMUNITY CENTRE NEWS

Our volunteer sessions started back on Saturday 9th January.

Our 2023 opening weekly opening hours remain the same as last year: Monday's 2 - 4pm, Wednesday's & Saturday's 10.00am - 12noon.

Woodend Primary School

Happy New Year to all our parent and community readers.

Woodend School re-opens for the 2023 school year on Wednesday 1 February. Our staff are looking forward to seeing all our students again and welcome all families new to the area.

Just a reminder that sunhats are compulsory during Term 1 and are available at the Warehouse Rangiora or we can order in named (embroidered) hats if preferred.

During the holiday break we have had some new signage put up in areas and have had some additional painted games applied to our concreted areas. With our planned interior and exterior painting over the coming year the school will definitely take on a more refreshed look.

Our school roll continues to grow and we ask any new families to the area who may have children due to start during the year to please register their enrolments online on our website www.woodend.school.nz

This will help enormously with our planning for 2023 / 2024.

WAIORA LINKS COMMUNITY TRUST UPDATE

BIG THANKS TO NEW SPONSORS:

We are super-delighted and thankful for the support of our two new sponsors: Justin Hartley from Ray White Pegasus Morris & Co and Ravenswood Developments Ltd. Their support, along with that of New World Ravenswood, enabled us to run the two significant events late in 2022 and will assist with the running of the Community Cuppa events over the next few months.

We also thank The Good Home Pegasus for their ongoing support over several years. There were many giveaway prizes at the end of year events, thanks to the following local businesses: The Good Home, Super Liquor, Brick Mill Café, Flat White Café & Bar, Three Llamas Café & Coffee Roastery, 79 Impresso Café, McDonalds and Bumble Bums. Thank you all so very much!

Special thanks to our team of volunteers who helped with the end of year events on top of their assistance with Ronel’s Community Cuppa throughout the year. You are an awesome team and we truly couldn’t do it without you!

FUN EVENTS CAP OFF A BUSY YEAR:

The hugely successful Waiora Links Community Trust Launch Lunch held at the Woodend Community Centre on 30 November attracted 83 guests including social service organisations, local community groups, local businesses, Council staff and elected representatives. Karakia were read by students from both Woodend School and Pegasus Bay School and former Mayor David Ayers cut the cake in recognition of him having suggested the name “Waiora” which was adopted by the Trust.

WAIORA LINKS COMMUNITY TRUST Continued

On 14 December a Combined Christmas Community Cuppa was held at the Woodend Community Centre and attended by around 50 local residents. A highlight was the very impressive Kapa Haka performance from 30 Woodend School students. Santa and the Mayor were also in attendance (see photo below right).

Below: Some of the guests at the "Launch Lunch" event.

VOLUNTEERS REQUIRED:

We are looking for additional volunteers to help with the Ravenswood/Woodend Community Cuppa on the 3rd Monday of the month, if you can help, please contact our Secretary at waioralinks@gmail.com or phone/text 0274 310 803

St Barnabas Update

Happy New Year to you all! After the wonderful celebrations of the Christmas season, January is always a quiet month and for many, a time to rest and reflect.

Here at St Barnabas, our groups and activities also close down for the month; we also offer one service on Sunday only, which is the 9.30am. Now as we move into February, it is time for our activities and groups to re-start – so we look forward to welcoming you back to them in this New Year.

And if you haven’t been involved before, you’re so welcome to join us. We also have an exciting change to introduce.

Starting on 5 February, we will be offering a service at 11am each Sunday.

Called ‘Generations’, it has developed from the 4.32 service which will not be resuming this year. ‘Generations’ will have a somewhat different format than the 4.32 had, however it remains open to all ages, whilst being principally aimed at families with children and an emphasis on child participation. It will be followed each week by a light lunch.

The more traditional 9.30am service remains unchanged -and the welcome at both services, the 9.30am and the 11.00am., is warmer than ever!

We’d love for you to come along and enjoy a service with us – in the meantime, keep enjoying this summer weather!

WORMS....not our favourite topic but.....

Surveys in New Zealand show a large number of adult cats and dogs have intestinal worms. Although most appear externally healthy, some of these worms can cause illness to children and vulnerable adult humans.

Even though people are cleaning up their cat and doggy doos, soil samples in parks and gardens still show high numbers of infective larvae, so regular effective worming is very important.

Remember that not all wormers are equal. Disappointingly some combination flea-worm products and some wormers do not kill all of the worms our pets can get.

Please feel free to talk with our friendly vets and nurses to choose the right product for you.
