“The Heart of Nassau County”

Nassau County Plans to Upsize Its Parks “Between every two pine trees, there is a door leading to a new way of life.” -John Muir, Scottish American conservationist by Nancy Lee Bethea John Muir was an influential Scottish American naturalist, conservationist, and writer of the nineteenth century who helped establish Sequoia National Park and Yosemite National Park in California. He also founded the Sierra Club in 1892. Muir believed America’s wilderness areas should be federally protected

as places of rest and recreation for generations to come. John Muir also had a local connection. Who knows how many “doors to a new way of life” Muir found between

Nassau County’s pines, palms, and oaks when he walked here on his way to Cedar Key from Fernandina Beach. The area he walked, part of the historic Florida Railroad, is now a trail at the John Muir Ecological Park along State Road 200,

west of US 17 in Yulee. Muir’s legacy of conservation also lives through our leaders’ vision of investing resources in our parks and recreation spaces for us to enjoy today and for our children and grandchildren to relish in the future. In 2020, the Nassau County Board of County Commissioners (BOCC), adopted the Parks Recreation Open Space Master Plan (PROSMP), which calls for the upgrade of current parks, development of new community and regional parks, a community events program, land acquisition, land development code adjustments, and an overhaul of recreation ordinances. In 2021, the BOCC furthered their commitment to Nassau County’s natural spaces by allocating over $18,000,000 toward park and recreation improvements. The BOCC also hired Jay Robertson, the county’s first Parks and Recreation Director, to oversee the implementation of the PROSMP. With roots in Nassau County, graduating from Fernandina Beach High School,

Atlantic Hurricane Season Begins June 1 Weather forecasters at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA) are predicting a busy hurricane season this year, which runs from June 1 to November 30, 2022. “For the 2022 hurricane season, NOAA is forecasting a likely range of 14 to 21 named storms (winds of 39 mph or higher), of which 6 to 10 could become hurricanes (winds of 74 mph or higher),

including 3 to 6 major hurricanes (category 3, 4, or 5; with winds of 111 mph or higher). NOAA provides these ranges with 70% confidence,” according to a NOAA press release issued May 24, 2022. Several climate factors, such as warmer-than-normal temperatures in the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea, the ongoing LaNina, weaker tropical trade winds, and an enhanced west African

monsoon, have contributed to the prediction of a busy storm season. Early preparation is essential for Floridians heading into the summer storm season. Governor Ron DeSantis and the Florida Division of Emergency Management (FDEM) encourage Floridians to purchase hurricane-related items from Saturday, May 28 through Friday, June 10, as part of Florida’s Disaster Preparedness Sales Tax Holiday. “Preparing for hurricanes and other natural disasters can be costly, espe-

cially with ongoing inflation continuing to impact our nation,” said Governor Ron DeSantis. “This year, the Disaster Preparedness Sales Tax Holiday has been extended to a full two weeks to ensure Floridians are receiving the maximum amount of savings and have enough time to prepare for hurricane season.” For hurricane resources and information, please visit www.noaa.gov or www. floridadisaster.org.

Thankfully, our county’s leadership is committed to providing beautiful and functional outdoor spaces for our citizens now and in the future. by Nancy Lee Bethea

School’s out for summer, and hopefully, that means a less hectic schedule for you and your family. You may be looking for camps or summer educational programs to enrich your kids’ summer. If so, here is a list of a few we know about here at “The Yulee News.” If you know of a summer program not listed here, please email us at TheYuleeNews@gmail.com and give us the scoop. We will be happy to publish more summer events in our upcoming issues. Nassau County Library – Summer Reading Program Each summer, the Nassau County Library sponsors a summer reading program for kids and adults. This year, the theme is “Oceans of Possibilities.” Participating in a summer reading program is a good way to keep your kids reading and combat the dreaded “summer slide.” In fact, research says kids who read 20 minutes a day typically score in the top 90 percent on standardized tests (Scholastic).

ADOPT ME! DR. PEPPER

Dr. Pepper has been at the shelter for 8 months. She weighs 44 Lbs. and is about 3 years old. She loves big people but small children make her nervous. She does well around other dogs. She has heartworms, but when you foster a dog with heartworm disease, medication and tests are free until negative. Should you decide to adopt the adoption fee is waived. Dr. Pepper comes with 4 free in-home training sessions for any adopter that lives in Nassau County.

CIRUS

Cirus is about two years old. He has the most adorable personality, and is so friendly. He is always happy to get treats. He does well with other dogs at the shelter, but if you are thinking of adopting we encourage a meet and greet.

PEEPS

Peeps has has a rough life and needs a new home. He was brought in by our officers on March 22nd, as part of an animal cruelty case. He weighs 45 pounds and is about 1 year old. Peeps was malnourished and had a severe case of demodectic mange. Thanks to your generous contributions, Peeps was able to get the care he required. He has gained weight and his fur is growing back. He is strong enough to go into a real home.

“I see the need for benefits of economic growth, and I believe that can be done with a conservative approach while maintaining fiscal responsibility.”

“I believe growth is inevitable and can be beneficial, however we must intrinsically channel our money in government to ensure we grow (infrastructure, public safety, roads and bridges, etc.) alongside these new developments to ensure the citizens get what they need to guarantee a safe, secure neighborhood worthy of praise.”

Paul Vancelette: (above) American Beach on Amelia Island. May 28 at 4:47 p.m. I caught a baby pomp, a large stingray (thanks Jason for the assist to release), but the most fun was a 26” sailcat that was a blast to play. I had my drag just right, so when the big cat wanted to run, my drag setting and my 4oz Sputnik were his only resistance. He made several fun runs straight back out, wanting no part of shallow water in bright daylight. Everything got released today, a few nice whiting got lucky that it was release-day.

Buzz around Town First Responder Chaplain and Peer Support Training - Level 1 This class is open to everyone who has a heart to serve and minister to First Responders! You do NOT have to currently be a Chaplain/Peer Support to attend. Learning how to effectively serve your first responders and your community can be done by Chaplains, Church Leaders, Non-Profit Volunteers, and Police/First Responder Peer Support Team Members. Chaplains provide a vital service to law enforcement, fire departments, and other emergency responders. Not only do they support these professionals, they bring comfort to people displaced by disaster or victimized by crime. But, WHO TRAINS THE CHAPLAINS? Often well-meaning pastors and ordained ministers must learn through the school of hard knocks. In addition, they often have the disadvantage of not understanding the culture and stresses of law enforcement and emergency responders. The realities faced daily by police, firefighters and paramedics differ markedly from the routines of most pastors. Yet with training, this gap can be bridged. The First Responders Chaplaincy Training equips pastors, volunteers, peer support team members, and first responders to support professional protectors and their families in relevant ways. It also gives insight into how chaplains can partner with responders to serve and comfort the community. Attendees will receive an introduction into the perspective of law enforcers and emergency professionals. Attendees will receive a certificate of completion after the training Note: This training does NOT certify anyone as a Chaplain. Ribbon Cutting Scheduled for New Cooperative Extension Office Nassau County, Florida, May 25, 2022

On Friday, June 10, 2022, at 2:00 p.m., the Board of County Commissioners will host a Ribbon Cutting in celebration of the completion of the new County Extension Office located at 85831 Miner Road, Yulee, FL 32097. The Board of County Commissioners broke ground on this project on May 15, 2019. All construction work has been done in-house by Facilities Maintenance staff consisting of over 1,800 man-hours and resulting in significant savings to the County. Upon completion, this new 2,000 square foot facility will serve as the administrative office for the County Extension staff and will feature classrooms for horticulture, natural resources, agriculture, 4-H Youth Development, and family consumer classes and training rooms for the master gardener volunteers and extension agents. The property will also feature demonstration gardens, a nature trail with learning stations, an orchard, and an aquatic pond for pond maintenance training. At the May 15, 2019 groundbreaking event, an announcement was made that the facility would be called the “Rebecca L. Jordi Cooperative Extension Office” in honor of Extension Director Rebecca L. Jordi who spent countless hours advocating for a new facility for Extension services. Unfortunately, Ms. Jordi passed away on July 31, 2020, however having the facility named after her will ensure that she will always be remembered for her great passion for agriculture and horticulture and for all her efforts in bringing this project to fruition. Members of the public are invited to attend and participate in this celebration.

Watch Your Wallet Recently there have been reports in the area concerning two men and a woman who distract shoppers in a grocery store and then steal the shopper’s wallet out of their purse. The trio appears to be in their 20’s, well dressed and each is wearing a COVID mask. Usually, the female asks the shopper a question about a grocery item and lures them a few feet away from their cart while another lifts the wallet out of the shopper’s purse. We encourage our community to secure their purses or backpacks while shopping. This can be done by making sure the compartments are zipped or fastened shut, securing the purse or backpack to the cart with the child strap or a carabiner clip or carrying it on your person. If a person, no matter how friendly, tries to lure you away from your cart, take the cart with you or take the purse/backpack with you. It is a shame that “bad people” take advantage of good people. The photos are from a recent incident at a grocery store on the Island. If you have any information on the suspects, please contact Detective Michelle Arseneau at 904-310-3217.
