Out of all the relationships we might have, the one we have with ourselves is the most important. As I’ve grown older, this relationship has transitioned into changes I’ve made to make my life easier, happier, less stressful.

I lay out my clothes and jewelry the night before so there’s no indecisiveness the next morning. I play pickleball, walk, use weights and the elliptical, stretch, do the NYT crossword puzzle (well, Monday and Tuesday) and word jumble. I guess these would fall under the category of wellness, but for me, these are things that I can do that make me feel better.

I’m in a book club with other women that is good for me socially and mentally. I FINALLY learned to use the calendar on my iPhone, and I’ve only double-booked plans once. I frequently use the app Waze for driving directions, Giphy, and asking Siri to set the alarm (mostly to check on baking). If I think of something I don’t want to forget and there’s no paper around, I text myself a reminder.

Making new, dear friends in California has been an absolute joy, and something I thought would never happen. The icing on the cake is having new friends over for dinner. My prep for dinner takes longer than it used to, but anything I can do ahead of time helps with my organization: choosing the menu, making lists, shopping a few days ahead of time – and preparing some things ahead of time like salad, frosting for a cake, cutting vegetables, deciding on the centerpiece, and setting the table the night before.

It’s taken me time to discover the things that I do love and help to make my life more complete. I cherish my relationships more than ever. My hope is to continue discovering new ideas and experiencing new adventures that fulfill me and make me happy.

TIVOL is a family-owned jeweler helping clients for over 112 years. Growing up in the business I didn't fully appreciate the gravity of that statement. As an adult, and now being in the business for over a decade, the impact and pride I feel when that thought comes to mind is incredibly humbling. Through the generations, our lasting influence in our community has helped build relationships with our clients and employees.

These relationships have helped us navigate economic booms and busts, wars, and now a pandemic. Our clients are our friends. We watch their children grow up and then if we are lucky get to help them with their special occasions. We attend weddings together, graduations, and birthday parties. If these last few years have taught us anything, it is once again how special of a business and industry we are in that allows us to have these relationships with our clients, and employees.

The other day I was chatting with a client who has shopped with us for decades. Steve was telling me about the time he bought his first watch from my grandfather Harold, and how of course he won him over with his charm and humor. He shared how he has loved seeing my mom in the store every time he comes in, and now getting the opportunity to get to know me. These stories mean the world to me, and to all of us at TIVOL. We have employees who know more about my grandfather and what he was like at work than I do because they have worked here for 20 or 30 years! What other retail environments can say that?!

With the world open back up, the value of face-to-face interactions with the people we love has become life giving. Being isolated in one way or another these last few years has been a hardship. Whether it is family, friends, or business relationships, we love seeing people every day.

Why do so many sayings end up being true? And why are they often only truly understood as we age? Youth is wasted on the young is one I reflect on frequently. While I do not hold many regrets, I can certainly appreciate the statement as I grow into middle age and have more life experience. Perhaps the most honest way I can relate to this is in the precious few hours we have during the day. The hectic schedules we experience seem to frequently be bursting at the seams. It’s challenging to balance our daily activities alongside spending time with the ones we love.

Perhaps the greatest relationship of my childhood was the one with my grandfather, Harold Tivol. Papa always seemed to be there for important moments in my life, as well as small moments. We would have fun sleepovers and get to play Nintendo (we didn’t have one at home), eat sugary cereals (again, not at home), and relish in the simple joy of spending time together. He would surprise me to cheer me on at a random tennis match, attend birthdays and graduations, and support me through good and bad. These memories have meant different things to me at different stages of my life. Today, it is figuring out how to do what he did with the same hours in the day that I have.

After he passed, Papa left me with a timepiece that he wore almost every day. I wear it on special occasions, family functions, or if I simply want to feel like Papa’s around. When I do wear it, I often think of the journey it’s taken over its life. After the inception and creation of the design, it took years of development before this timepiece made it to Papa’s wrist: but first came months of crafting the parts, assembling, testing, and quality control. Horologists are true artisans who spend their lives dedicated to their craft.

The idea that I now am blessed with continuing the story of this timepiece is incredibly meaningful to me. I will add to its story, and care for it for its eventual next generation owner. For now, the time I get to spend with it will be another cherished memory that will belong to its story. We all face obstacles and opportunities for growth along the way. But with us sharing the same daily hours, the fact remains: we must find the time.

GETAWAYS, WANDERLUST EXPLORATION the

an introduction to Patek Philippe's annual calendar travel time

Technical perfection and aesthetic beauty of a timepiece hold a similar significance for Patek Philippe. The composition of the movement, case and dial are always the focus of each timepiece creation. For Ref. 5326G-001 Annual Calendar Travel Time, launched in 2022, the manufacture combines two of its outstanding patented complications for the first time in one timepiece: The Annual Calendar and Time Travel system.

In 1996, Patek Philippe launched the patented Annual Calendar. It is a full calendar with day/date/month that requires manual correction only once a year (on March 1). The complication is based in innovative engineering, including wheels and pinions, that distinguishes between months with 30 and 31 days. The Travel Time system displays a second time zone. In order for both mechanisms to work seamlessly, several technical challenges were addressed leading to the creation of eight patents for greater reliability and more user-friendliness.

When creating its timepieces, Patek Philippe constantly leverages itself for the benefit of its customers. To package the exclusive functions in style, the manufacture created a new white-gold, 41-millimeter Calatrava case. The timeless elegance of the Calatrava design is apparent in the slightly chamfered bezel with “Clous de Paris” detailing and polished, inclined lugs. The case middle displays Patek Philippe’s signature hobnail motif along the entire circumference. The charcoal gray dial contains fine gradation to the periphery and a slightly granular structure – reminiscent of the cases of old photo cameras – a nod to getaways, wanderlust and exploration.

In its quest to repeatedly develop new functions and complications, Patek Philippe relies on over 180 years of uninterrupted experience. Handing down information and expertise from one generation to the next, it belongs to the rich heritage of technical progress crowned by over one hundred patents. The Annual Calendar and the Time Travel mechanisms perfectly illustrate a customer-centric development history encased in the impressive Ref. 5326G-001 and further cement Patek Philippe as an industry leader.

GENERATIONS

TRADITION of

TIVOL'S long standing friendship with Patek Phillippe

On a mid-October morning, a group of golfers took to the green for their shot at bragging rights - and some coveted prizes - in a friendly tournament hosted by TIVOL and Patek Philippe. The shotgun style tournament, held at Mission Hills Country Club (MHCC), was the starting point for a day designed to honor the treasured relationships between Patek Philippe and their collectors.

The early fall morning created a perfect setting for a friendly competition followed a post-round celebration and lunch on the MHCC Men’s Patio, overlooking the course. Golfers and guests were invited back to MHCC that evening for an exclusive look at some of Patek Philippe’s most treasured timepieces. These timepieces were showcased between MHCC’s Living Room and Ballroom, encouraging attendees to walk the space and view every aspect of the eclectic vitrines.

Representatives from the Patek Philippe team mingled with guests during the event, welcoming questions and providing further details about their extensive timepiece collection. A private menu of passed hors d'oeuvres, small plates and specialty beverages satiated dinnertime palates. Guests reveled in the opportunity to engage with the Patek Philippe team and their unprecedented selection in an intimate setting.

TIVOL and Patek Phillippe appreciate the chance to celebrate and recognize the meaningful relationships and timeless moments that enrich our lives.

REJUVENATE

YOURSELF

The fastest and easiest way to avoid, or recover from, burnout is to recharge. Our bodies need rest, which is why nearly one third of our time is spent sleeping. Our minds need rest as well, which is why the idea of taking time to unwind is such a critical part of being the best version of ourselves.

The activities that refresh and revive us are subjective. The important point being that each person recognizes the need and makes the choice to do something about it. The introvert will not likely choose the same activity as the extrovert. The young parents will need something different than the empty-nesters. The career driven will want something dissimilar to the retired. Yet we are all connected by the innate need for self-care and restorative moments.

The truth of the matter is that most of us are unable to realize that we are running on empty, until it is too late. We are left floundering in our feelings and exhausted. How can we work towards finding a better balance between high-achievement and mindfulness? Is it possible to take ownership over the joy we experience in life by being more intentional with the small moments? There is a middle ground to be found in marrying life’s small moments with the grander ones.

Challenge Yourself. Try something you’ve never done before because it seems too challenging. Stretch yourself out of your comfort zone even if it feels daunting. Change from your daily crossword puzzle to Word Jumble or Wordle. Buy a subscription to the Wall Street Journal, New York Times, Variety or Restaurant News as a good way to learn about what’s going on in the world. Clean out and organize that drawer in the kitchen that is filled with STUFF. According to the experts, brain health is improved by changing your usual mental activity and re-ordering the clutter in your space (and your mind).

Treat Yourself. Take that trip to Africa you’ve been talking about for years. Splurge on the 100” flat screen TV you’ve been coveting. Remodel your bathroom to give it a spa-like feel. Book a mani-pedi for you and a friend as a surprise. Plan an outing to the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art and stay for lunch. Surprise your husband or friend with dinner and/or tickets to a favorite musical group. Book Pickleball lessons with a pro in town. Take a pie baking class. Schedule an appointment at a shooting range. Going out of your way to care for yourself is one of the best investments in a life well-lived.

There is so much happiness to be found by using our imagination, experimenting, and seeking the pleasures of life. We can discover what sparks joy and fulfills us by recharging and reconnecting. We just need to get out of our own way and make the effort.

DIAMOND INSPIRES where the DESIGN the

Family-owned and operated Rahaminov Diamonds is headquartered in the heart of downtown Los Angeles, California. For more than 70 years, Rahaminov Diamonds has been a trusted supplier of beautifully cut rare diamonds to trade and fine jewelry retailers worldwide – with a focus of family and love at its core.

The story of Rahaminov diamonds begins with a first generation of innovative brothers – establishing the Rahaminov family name as synonymous with diamonds of the utmost quality.

Their dedication paved the way for a second generation of Rahaminov Diamonds that would cement love into the brand. Following in her family’s footsteps, Tamara Rahaminov studied at the Gemological Institute of America. It was there where she met her husband and future business partner Amir Goldfiner.

The pair opened their Los Angeles office in 1989. Side by side, they evolved it from a fine diamond house to a luxury brand of exquisite diamond jewelry. Amir’s attentive and personal relationships with customers partnered with Tamara’s remarkable designs built the company diamond by diamond. Tamara and Amir’s love for their work fostered their children’s inspiration for the fine jewelry industry.

Today, a third generation has come on board, with Amir and Tamara’s daughters Nicol and Melanie Goldfiner. Nicol and Melanie bring their modern sensibilities to the Rahaminov Diamonds brand, with family and love at the forefront of their work.

Rahaminov Diamonds’ designs are executed in platinum and 18 karat gold and incorporate classic white and fancy color diamonds. The collections feature the most exceptional cuts that are expertly crafted to highlight and enhance each diamond’s shape.

The diamond house is also proud to have their own unique diamond shape – The Movál’®.

A Movál’s® elegant shape blends characteristics of a timeless marquise cut with the soft curves of an oval. No two Movál® diamonds are alike – making each Rahaminov Diamonds Movál’® piece special and meaningful to the wearer. Launched in 2016, the Movál’® collection became an instant hit among Rahaminov’s clientele. Soon after, Rahaminov Diamonds was awarded a trademark for the Movál’®.

To date, each Rahaminov Diamonds design is manufactured locally in Los Angeles and designed by an all-women team. The story of Rahaminov Diamonds continues with a tradition of unsurpassed customer service founded in family and love with spectacular diamonds inspiring each design.

POWER the of

SHOWING UP

WRITTEN BY: GLORIA MCGRATH

So many of us have been on the receiving end of difficult conversations. This one rocked me: my friend was reaching out with a health scare. She is my peer, my friend, we are “too young” for these types of calls. I was ill-prepared.

It started with a text regarding my availability because she needed “a few minutes to talk”. She never approaches me this way. I caught my breath and responded on the exhale. “Of course,” I replied, “when is a good time?” My mind immediately jumped to the health of her parents, which has been rocky. I thought about her children and the plethora of concerns that hang in the balance of parenting. I thought about her marriage, her partner, her career. I did not expect it to be about her.

“They found a lump in my right breast,” she began the call. None of the usual greetings, just straight to the business at hand. She proceeded to discuss pending follow-ups, what brought her to seek an evaluation in the first place and how she hadn’t shared details before now because she “didn’t want to make a fuss”.

The phone calls, late night texts and tears flooded in. The vulnerable conversations about wants and needs challenged my emotional bandwidth. The anxiety was overwhelming at times due to the fear of the unknown. In the calmer moments of being present to her, when I could think and feel fully, I felt incredibly alive.

I held space for her to be honest and open, and in doing so, I opened myself up to do the same. I showed up. Not only for her but for myself. I became incredibly focused on her: asked the tough questions, challenged the emotionally-based decisions, and encouraged full awareness of all the possibilities. Our friendship is rooted in her ability to count on me in these moments, as I know she would do the same for me.

All of these moments occurred in the mix of me caring for my own family. My husband and daughters were distinctly aware of my exposed state before I had even shared it. “Are you ok? You seem off,” was the first ask from my husband. In usual form, I brushed it off: too busy with the dinner on the stove, puppy at my feet and our daughters in the room that were counting on the consistency of our nighttime routine.

Managing the kitchen clean-up and the bedtime routine allowed me some space to decompress. Completing tasks is something I’m good at and helps me re-organize my brain. I confessed to my girls that I was worried about a friend to ease their worried minds. Unwittingly showing them how friends care for each other even when they aren’t together.

When we had a moment alone, I melted into my husband with an honest confession. The words and fears and tears tumbled out. I swore him to secrecy when I didn’t need to. We bonded over shared apprehensions. A deeper connection between the two of us emerged as we contemplated what we would do if it were us.

Over the coming months, we walked through fire and emerged unscathed. Her lump was a benign cyst. There was nothing to be done but routine follow-up. Our friendship forever cemented in strength through fear – a momentary blip in our lives that empowered us to show up for ourselves and each other.

WORLD'S APART: together with Lika Behar

On an icy morning in the heart of Kansas City, I slipped into my office chair to prepare questions for Turkish designer and business owner Lika Behar. As I considered what to ask, I thought about how her unique pieces bridge the gap between old-world and current-day design, how they cross between a culture built on thousands of years of tradition and the modern shift of the new millennia, and of what Lika’s line represents for the women who adorn it. Less than an hour later, from sunny Manhattan, Lika sent her first round of replies in a conversation that showcases the essence of both the brand and the artist who defines it.

THIS IS LIKA BEHAR...

Lika’s formative years were spent in one of the world’s largest cities. Ranked number 15 globally, Istanbul has played a critical role in the story of our collective past. It’s the city of a thousand lives, former host to Roman chariot races, center of the Orthodox Christian civilization, and hub for the development of artistic achievement; It’s the space where the past meets the future, the East meets the West, and vibrant culture comes to life.

H: What first drew you into the world of jewelry design?

L: I grew up where Asia meets Europe, in a city that is the cradle of Ancient Civilizations. My dad was a jeweler and had a store in the Grand Bazaar in Istanbul. As a little girl, visiting him there with my mom (who is also a jewelry lover) is one of my fondest childhood memories. As a teenager, if I had a free afternoon, I would always head back to the Bazaar and wander around. I now live in New York City and consider my artistic voices to be a fusion of Ancient Greek classicism and Modern Urban Style, a mesh of Asia and Europe; a bit of yin and a bit of yang. I am super lucky that I can breathe my art and soul into the pieces that I create. I try on every piece and tweak it until I feel good about it before it can be shown.

H: What does jewelry mean to you?

L: It is an ethereal connection, so much deeper than clothing. It might be adornment, but it is also a way to connect with your inner self. It can mean love and memories; it can be a piece that gives you confidence or it can be a piece that gives you confidence or one you simply enjoy and love for what it is. We acquire jewelry not because we need it; but because we have to have it.

Nearly 42% of all businesses are currently owned by female entrepreneurs, an impressive feat considering the fact that women were only granted the right to vote in the United States in 1920. Ten years later (the same year that Constantinople became known as Istanbul) Turkey granted women the same right. Nearly 100 years since, women now represent slightly less than half of ownership in small businesses across the globe.

H: As a child, did you always envision yourself building a legacy of entrepreneurship?

L: I was always discouraged from working, let alone becoming an entrepreneur! I thought I was dreaming the impossible dream, but ended up following those dreams when I came here to America by myself at age 18 and created my own brand. I am working on building a very strong team of artisans and designers who are young and talented to imbue my design sense in a way that can take it to the next generation while staying true to my brand identity. I am learning something new every day, because jewelry knowledge is infinite, and building a strong team to support my work. I never think any of my designs are perfect, I always try to do better. I need to make today better than yesterday; and that drives me to work very hard.

H: What do you hope the women who connect with your pieces will feel when wearing them?

L: By nature, I am a very friendly and warm person and being authentic and having effortless style is important to me. I hope women take my jewelry and mix and match it with what they might already own; and hence imbue their own lifestyle into it. The woman who wears my pieces is self-confident; loves art, travel, and museums. She is interested in history and has her own independent style.

Amid creating an empire of her own that showcases the community in which she grew up, Lika honors the community in which she currently lives by sponsoring mammograms for underinsured and uninsured women in New York City and by feeding homebound elderly citizens through Citymeals on Wheels. She connects with our global community through the Gem Legacy, encouraging ethical gen sourcing in Africa and by supporting artisanal mining and elementary schools in Tanzania. Hers is a legacy of hope, a vision for a stronger future, and of connecting beautiful, handcrafted works of art with the thousands of women who wear it, each working to create their own stories.

EXPLORER'S HEART UNEARTHING the a guide to travel in our modern world

Through the Rocky Mountains, over the Mojave Desert, and across the Pacific I trekked enroute from Kansas City to the 50th state in our union. My trip to Oahu was a much-anticipated adventure, nearly a year in the making, that included meticulous planning and a few surprises along the way. What began as a comment in jest - to join some friends - resulted in a ten-day journey filled with keepsake memories that will last a lifetime.

It takes roughly ten hours to venture backwards in time from KC to Honolulu. I’ve always been fascinated by the opportunity to travel westward, feeling that I've somehow unlocked the secrets of the universe in gaining a few added hours to the day. I arrived at the airport before five o’clock that morning, was 36,000 feet in the air by half past six, enjoyed breakfast at nine, on the nose, and had a light snack with coffee just an hour later... at nine again. It’s the small moments, where I sit back with childlike wonder and filter through the construct of time, that give me a greater appreciation for what it’s like to truly live.

Our aircraft played host to three-hundred-and-some-odd souls that day, all hailing from different backgrounds, ideologies, and routines, united in one singular journey across the sea. As I tried to find comfort in the middle seat of row 26, I had to wonder… why do we travel?

We are made better by the opportunities we gift to ourselves to experience life differently. Be it a daring safari adventure through the canvas of the Serengeti or a peaceful breath of fresh air embraced somewhere in the middle of turquoise sea, the momentary escapes provide an unmatched perspective into life beyond ourselves.

When we travel, we make an equal investment into our global community as we do into our own existence. We make the world a better place as we become the best versions of ourselves. Small and meaningful interactions with strangers, which often happen naturally when we travel, offer proven biological benefits. Connecting to those around us promotes better overall health, stronger mental focus, and a greater long-term probability for happiness.

We travel as much to explore and get lost in the adventure of life as we do to find ourselves time and time again. We foster an appreciation for the world around us, deepen the connections we share with one another, and promote vitality and a more meaningful existence. We are truly made better when we travel.

UNIQUE WAYS TO TRAVEL

PRIVATE JET

When it comes to customized travel, little compares to the accessibility of flying private. Planning your itinerary and avoiding public terminal congestion are just a few of the natural benefits of chartering an exclusive aircraft for any adventure. The ease of traveling directly to the aircraft and avoiding lengthy security lines is a major advantage in saving aggravation and precious time. Unexpected wins that accompany your jetsetting experience include the ability to bring your animals aboard the airplane for vacation and shorter commute time between your destination and any land-adventure that follows. Flying private is often nearly equally as cost-effective as business class - and tailored to your needs…making this a great option for domestic travel.

SLEEPER TRAINS

Whether you’re planning a bi-coastal tour across the United States or an extended holiday that includes multiple countries in Europe, there’s often more land available to explore than time and opportunity to do it. That’s why sleeper trains make our list of top ways to travel in 2023. These trains offer passengers comfortable private cabins and the opportunity to take in the beautiful scenery around them without distraction - from driving that is. Sleeper trains are a wonderful alternative to both domestic and international travel.

LUXURY YACHT

Sea travel offers a truly unique experience and remarkably humbling opportunity to think beyond us. The world suddenly becomes such a larger place when we realize that a universe exists below us in the sea and above us in the sky aboard a boat in the middle of the ocean. Private yachting is making its way as a top travel experience for those who love being on the water. Charters often include all-inclusive, full-service options for guests to enjoy their experience comfortably every step of the way. What’s best is that private yacht adventures are surprisingly within reach, starting at a similar price point per passenger per week than their large-scale luxury cruise ship counterparts. There are dozens of websites dedicated to helping would-be passengers connect with private charter experiences at varying pricepoints all over the world. Taking the time to research and map out the desired experience will assist in allocating dollars effectively. Add-ons might even include a timepiece with dual time zone capabilities to keep one foot grounded at home while trekking across the globe.

FIRST CLASS

They say vacation starts the moment you drop your luggage at the ticketing counter at the airport. But Cramped quarters and squished middle seats do not exactly lend themselves to the feeling of joy you hope to experience on holiday. Luxury travel aboard commercial airlines has become a way to balance the accessibility of commercial travel with the exclusiveness of semi-private luxury. First class is an invaluable option for passengers aboard trans-continental flights. They often include semi-private lounge chairs with personal entertainment and more upscale amenities than shorter, domestic flights.

Your experience in upscale travel should be a luxury one from the moment you cross the threshold of your home. When you fly first class, you’re typically whisked away to the airport in a luxury sedan where you’ll be met by an airline representative who will escort you to a private check-in area with zero wait time. From there, you’ll have access to a first-class lounge outfitted with complimentary food and drinks, dedicated private areas for working or reading, and a variety of newspapers and magazines in different languages.

Depending on the airport, your lounge may also include a full-service dining room with full menu options and private bathrooms with showers to freshen up. Once aboard the aircraft, an array of amenities await you aboard. Luxury apartment style seating with fully enclosed suites from floor to ceiling, onboard showers, unlimited Dom Perignon, dine on demand, mood lighting, turn-down service, plated meals in courses, and Bose headsets are just a few examples of what different airlines offer. Although obviously pricier than business class, flying first class is an experience unlike anything else in the air.

MAKING in the 100 YEARS

A gallon of gas set you back just fourteen cents to the dollar, the exploration of King Tut’s tomb was afoot, and the Yankees pitched their first game inside what would one day become an iconic stadium. The year was 1923 and the Earth’s population sat just shy of two billion. 2,910,000 births were recorded in the United States that year including Bob Barker, Alan Shepard, Hank Williams, and Harold Tivol.

The world was changing, rapidly. 100 years and an increase of six billion to the population, the world is a different place than it was a century ago. Advancements in modern technology, transportation, and access to knowledge help us to have a greater understanding of where we came from, how we value our time together, and where we go from here.

TO BE CONTINUED... COMING FALL 2023.

MEANINGFUL MEALTIMES

Many of us took part in family meals growing up. We worked together to plan, prepare, create and clean up. We may have selected a recipe to make together. We may have voted on where to order takeout. We may have chosen to go out and enjoy a meal at a local eatery. Whatever we chose, there was a sense of ritual to a shared meal and the understanding that core needs of ours would be fulfilled.

When we are focused on the simple act of feeding ourselves, we naturally set aside time to be together. What we may not realize, or appreciate at the time, is how we are fueled emotionally by connecting with each other. Through the building of relationships, the brain releases oxytocin, a powerful neurotransmitter responsible for bonding behavior, the creation of group memories and empathy, among other things. It effectively amplifies the positive emotions linked to our social connections and creates a positive feedback loop for these associations. In this way, our relationships sustain and maintain us on many levels.

There is a unique intimacy to sharing a meal with others. Time spent focused on each other bolsters relationships, deepens friendships and cements familial bonds in a way that few other activities can. It is a time to unwind, relax and unplug. A time to connect and enjoy those around you. A safe space to share goals for the future, plans for the present and reflect on the past.

Mealtimes are also an opportunity to process the challenges of the day. A place to release tension and feel validated through the discussion and feedback that naturally occur when we engage directly with one another. We know we will feel seen, heard and valued in our vulnerability with those closest to us who can relate to us. Ultimately, it is a space to turn toward, lean in and attach ourselves to the world around us in a empathetic and caring way.

As you plan for your next meal, consider its infinite potential to connect you to others. Perhaps it will give you the nudge to invite a colleague out for lunch or your new neighbor for dinner. Maybe it revives your plan to make family dinners a daily habit or cements the importance of extended family invitations to your holiday gatherings. The options are limitless, and the connections run deep

ULTIMATE the WEDDING GIFT GUIDE

The season is upon us for celebrating the love and commitments of our nearest and dearest friends and family. Wedding season is a beautiful time of year, with no shortage of opportunity to honor the special couples in our lives.

In the summer after my sophomore year, one of my sorority sisters, Callie, tied the knot with her college sweetheart, Josh. The two were the ideal match, a perfect pairing in terms of temperament and life goals. They’re still together, now living just a stone’s throw from our alma mater where Josh serves as the lead pastor for their church and Callie directs the choir at the county middle school.

Their life together is a near exact portrait of what everyone would have guessed when they first said, “I do”. They're the salt of the Earth kind of people that you just can’t help but love from the first time you meet them which is exactly why I was so elated to curate a gift reflective of their beautiful love story.

A couple of weeks after the duo drove from their reception, I got an unexpected call from Callie. All was well in their world, she would tell me, they had enjoyed their extended honeymoon immensely before returning home to resume normal life. There was only one issue, Callie was curious about the gift I had chosen for them. She wanted to know what, exactly, had been in it.

Enclosed in the carefully wrapped box I had given them was an assortment of gifts that only a broke college student would think to give let alone, in hindsight, enjoy getting. A cookbook, a DVD featuring the “Best of Gallagher”, and an assortment of fresh fruit which, as it turns out, would stay fresh only for approximately less than the two weeks it took Callie and Josh to open the box. What a rotten gift I had given to them, both figuratively and literally.

Embarrassment turned to laughter and eventually a life lesson in using logic before creativity when it comes to interacting with the world around me. Whether you’re attending your own sorority sister’s wedding to her beautiful bride-to-be, your brother’s wedding to your future sister-in-law, or honoring the wedding if your best friend and his handsome partner, here are suggestions for how you can combine thoughtfulness and appropriate gift giving for the wedding season.

WELCOME TO THE FAMILY

gift ideas to & from the parents of the bride & groom

WHAT IS THE HISTORY?

Researchers say two of the three key moments in people's lives are the day they get married and the birth of their first child. Weddings are also a pivotal moment in the lives of parents. They are, by nature, full of joyous celebration - bringing loved ones together for the outward expression of the commitment between two people.

FAMILY TREE

WHAT IS THE EXPECTATION? WHAT IS THE GOAL?

While some modern couples steer away from traditions of days past, it is still customary (and appropriate) for couples to exchange gifts in honor of this special day. Unlike standard holidays, gift giving that surrounds a wedding is meant to incorporate elements of sentimentality and care.

WHAT

DOING FAVORS

wedding guest & party gifts & expectations

IS THE HISTORY?

The tradition of giving small mementos to attendees at a wedding is said to date back to the 16th century when brides, grooms, and their families would gift perfumes and small pastries to guests who traveled long distances to join the festivities. While take-aways are lovely expressions of appreciation, trinkets and knick knacks are tired, underwhelming, and often left behind.

PHOTOBOOTH

WHAT IS THE EXPECTATION?

Receptions bring a mixed bag of friends, family, and loved ones from varying ages and stages of lives. Providing some sort of favor to guests is still very much appreciated.

PARTY FAVORS FOR GUESTS

photo booths with take home strips of keepsake memories.

TREATS

Heartfelt notes with a small treat.

DONATION

A donation to a local charity in lieu of favors.

WHAT IS THE GOAL?

Favors should be practical, useful, and fun while showcasing the overall theme and vibe of the wedding itself. Gone are the days of offering five sugared almonds to guests (representing love, health, happiness, fertility, and long life); takeaways can come in a variety of shapes, sizes, and budgets from a few dollars on up.

SURVIVAL KIT

Survival kit with tylenol, powdered electrolytes, & mints for partiers.

COFFEE & TEA

Coffee & tea packs for the morning after.

WINE GLASSES

Custom wine glasses to use & take home.

One of the most enduring pre-ceremonial traditions that has withstood the test of time is the exchange of thoughtful tokens of love before the ceremony. A lot of time, energy, and attention goes into planning the small details of your wedding day and a carefully selected gift is an intentional act of showing love in a meaningful way. Surprising your partner with a keepsake gift can help you both refocus your mindset on what matters the most on your special day - the life you are building together. Although there is no set rule for what should be exchanged before the vows, these gifts are meant to offer a physical representation of the love and commitment between you and your spouse that can hold meaning for you both.

the GREATEST ADVENTURE

THEIR LIVES of

the wedding of mark & sally ann chapline

Avid outdoor adventure seekers and fast friends, Mark and Sally Ann Chapline had each found their way to Denver through fond childhood vacation memories and a love of the outdoors, but were brought together by a unique family connection. Mark, a 4th generation Financial Advisor with Morgan Stanley, joined his father’s Kansas City based team following graduate school, with the ability to live and work in Denver. Sally Ann, now a real estate agent with Compass, sought out Colorado as a place to create new experiences for herself in a familiar, yet exciting place.

Although they made it to Colorado separate of each other, Mark and Sally Ann had some family history guiding them. Their mothers, Sally and Elise, were roommates in college and bridesmaids in each other’s weddings... they had vacationed together before they started their families and remained “Christmas card friends” over the years. Sally Ann’s move out west from Atlanta prompted a stop-over at the Chapline’s home in Lake Lotawana. Sally Ann noted Mark’s childhood pictures lining the walls of the home and when she was given his information as a point of contact for her in Denver, she reached out.

Mark remembers Sally Ann’s initial message and how they easily fell into conversation via messages on social media and texts. Their shared love of Denver living with its outdoor diversions and an invitation to join a kickball league from Mark to Sally Ann brought them closer together. They enjoyed other activities like skiing, camping, hiking, and concert going, often running into one another. “At that point, we hadn’t been prioritizing time for each other, but we always enjoyed each other’s company,” says Mark. It was due to these repeated run-ins that Mark decided to lean into the relationship.

“I asked Sally Ann to a John Mayer concert that was actually a double date,” recalls Mark, “but I’m not sure she saw it that way, yet.” Sally Ann thought they were just going with a group of friends, and she remembers the concert fondly. They now chuckle while recounting how they had “five first dates” before things settled into a more serious relationship. “We wanted to make sure we were both ready for each other,” says Mark.

72

After the first few years of dating, avidly traveling and socializing together, pandemic lockdown occurred. They quickly made life changes that allowed them to work and live out of the Chapline family’s home in Lake Lotawana. This time together truly cemented their relationship and allowed them to have unprecedented time together. Self-professed leaders, connectors and socialites, they leaned into each other and their relationship when social opportunities were scant.

“Sally Ann’s energy is so positive – people just want to be around her,” Mark states. “She is trustworthy and warm.” He values her ability to have remained positive through lockdown and to find ways to engage in the world as they were able. Similarly, Sally Ann is thankful for that cherished time together and Mark’s ability to make the most of an interesting time in the world, always acting in kindness and patience. He can “take the time to sit down and really focus on a task,” which is exactly what he did when he decided to take their relationship to the next level and propose.

“My grandfather got my grandmother’s ring from TIVOL and my father, Robert, did the same,” Mark says, “TIVOL is the name we think of when we think of special pieces and jewelry.” The multigenerational link to TIVOL led him to make a special trip back to Kansas City and into the Hawthorne Plaza TIVOL, where he met with a seasoned sales professional. “Heather helped me through the whole process,” Mark recalls. “She was an ally in the selection process, and she kept me on track.”

With the TIVOL team’s guidance and the family blessing, Mark began to build Sally Ann’s ring. He wanted something classic and stylish that fit Sally Ann’s warm personality. Sally Ann opted not to be involved in the process, as she wanted to be surprised: “I love a 3-stone ring. I’m 5’11”, and I didn’t want it to be swallowed up by me!” With her preferences in mind, Mark created the perfect 3-stone ring with a 1.70tcw center stone and 0.5tcw side stones in a platinum mounting.

73

After the ring was chosen, Mark planned a proposal in Crested Butte, Colorado, one of Sally Ann’s favorite places and where they previously made their dating relationship official. In a mountain valley, surrounded by yellow wildflowers (her favorite color), Mark asked Sally Ann to marry him. She was elated and they celebrated with family and friends, who had traveled out to Colorado to surprise her. After a few days of celebration, they immediately began making plans for a Vero Beach, Florida wedding during the summer of 2022.

At their wedding ceremony, Sally Ann placed a men’s 6mm band in 18K yellow gold on Mark’s finger. Inside the band was a coiled texture, which his grandfather had in his wedding ring. In turn, Mark placed a 1.05tcw diamond and platinum anniversary band with 0.30tcw fancy yellow diamonds on each end next to Sally Ann’s engagement ring. The touch of yellow is an ode to her mother and grandmother, and a reminder of the importance of family and tradition in their daily lives.

As they approach their first anniversary, they value their relationship more than ever and delight in shared adventures. Their pup, Louie, a 1-year-old Portuguese Water Dog, is a lively addition to their home. Mark reflects on the last year as a time for “embracing the adventure of life” and Sally Ann encourages them to make time to create and work through a bucket list of travel opportunities and adventures.

They travel back to Kansas City regularly to visit family and friends. They remain connected to and love Kansas City for the community, character and deep pride in shared values and traditions. The TIVOL team looks forward to their visits and the opportunity to clean and service their special pieces now and for many years to come!

PEAR BRANDY, BLANCO TEQUILA, PAW PAW, BITTER ORANGE, LIME ACID, PEAR VINEGAR

recipes from CATHY'S KITCHEN

PLATED BEAUTIFUL POKE

INGREDIENTS:

1 tbsp soy sauce (or Tamari)

2 tsp olive oil

1 tsp Asian sesame oil

1 tsp minced fresh ginger

Sriracha to taste (1/2 - 11/2 tsp)

1/2 tsp unseasoned rice vinegar

1 lb very cold thick cut sushi-grade salmon or tuna

Sesame seeds

Cubed mango

Cashews or peanuts

DIRECTIONS:

Combine marinade ingredients in a glass jar; shake well.

Cut tuna or salmon into bite-sized cubes and place into a bowl. Pour marinade in and marinated 30 minutes to 3 hours maximum. (I've mistakenly done longer, and the fish gets mushy).

I like to serve this on a white plate with long stems of herbs alongside a basket of crackers.

NOTE: You can make this marinade up to 3 days ahead and refrigerate.

PINE NUT CRUSTED CHICKEN with

baby spinach and feta salad

INGREDIENTS:

Lemon Oregano Vinaigrette

1/2 c extra virgin olive oil

2 tbsp red wine vinegar

1 tsp Dijon mustard

1 small garlic clove, minced

1 tbsp fresh squeezed lemon juice

1 tsp dried oregano

1/2 tsp salt

1/2 tsp sugar

Dash of pepper

Pine Nut Crusted Chicken

1 c toasted pine nuts (put in skillet and toast over medium heat until fragrant and light brown - be careful not to burn)

1 c panko breadcrumbs

4 boneless skin breasts about 6 ounces each

1/2 c flour

2 eggs, beaten

Salt and pepper to taste

Vegetables oil for frying

Salad

12 oz baby spinach

1 c thinly sliced red onions

1 c crumbled feta cheese

Pint of red grapes tomatoes sliced lengthwise

DIRECTIONS:

Lemon Oregano Vinaigrette

Place all ingredients in a food processor and blend well. Easy to double or triple. Store extra dressing up to a week in the refrigerator.

Pine Nut Crusted Chicken

Place cooled pine nuts in the food processor and pulse several times, stopping to scrape down the sides - until the nuts are coarsely chopped. Transfer to a bowl and add the breadcrumbs. Place the flour in one bowl and the beaten eggs in another... place a bowl with crumbs next to the eggs. Take out a 9x13 dish and line with foil. Season the chicken with salt and pepper. One at a time, dip chicken into flour so covered (shake off any excess), then egg, then crumb mixture. Press the crumbs into each breast. Lay all 4 breasts on aluminum foil and refrigerate for one hour.

Use a large skillet and add 1/2" oil and heat on medium high until oil is shimmering. Fry on one side for about 3 minutes until golden brown, then turn. If your skillet isn't large enough, fry 2 at a time. Remove from heat and place on a cookie rack placed on a paper towel lined cookie sheet and keep warm.

Salad

Toss all ingredients with dressing with dressing and divide among flour plates - with salad on bottom, then chicken, then salad on top.

NOTE: I recommend sauteing the onions before placing them on the salad. I usually make the chicken ahead just before guests arrive and keep warm in a 300-degree oven until ready to serve.

79

CHOCOLATE COOKIE BRITTLE

INGREDIENTS:

3/4 c plus 2 tbsp unsalted butter, cut into tablespoons

1 c turbinado sugar

2 tsp pure vanilla extract

1 tsp fine sea salt

2 c all-purpose flour

1/2 c coarsely chopped pecans or walnuts

3/4 c bittersweet or semisweet chips (60% to 70% cacao)

DIRECTIONS:

Preheat oven to 350 with rack in the center.

In a large microwave safe bowl, combine butter with chocolate and melt in 30 second intervals, stirring in between. Whisk the mixture until the butter is completely melted. Let cool for 5 minutes. Whisk again until the mixture is thickened and smooth and no longer looks separated, about one minute. Whisk in the sugar, vanilla and salt until combined. Add flour and stir until there are no white streaks remaining, then stir in half the nuts.

Scrape the dough onto a rimmed 12 x 17” ungreased cookie sheet, and pat the dough into a very even thin layer with your hands. Use an offset or rubber spatula to smooth the top. Sprinkle in chocolate chips and nuts as desired over the dough and press them down lightly with your hands.

Bake until slightly firm to the touch all over, 22-25 minutes, rotating the baking sheet every 7-8 minutes. Place the cookie sheet on a rack to let cool completely.

Use a wide thin spatula to loosen the edges of the brittle, then ease the whole slab onto the rack. Important: let cool completely and then break into jagged pieces. Store in an airtight container.

NOTE: I love to make these and put in a wide squatty glass jar to use as a hostess gift.

TALL TIVOL TAILS from

It’s Emma, TIVOL’s self-proclaimed Chief Happiness Officer. This spring and summer, you may see me over on the (insta)gram, helping on the sales floor, or by the TIVOL Doggie Bar out front (the best spot in the city for some fresh ice water on the Country Club Plaza). When the weather is warm, I can usually be found roaming around, greeting friends, and keeping a watchful eye on our beloved store. I love to bask in the sun on our TIVOL rug by the front door. Sometimes people outside will see me and come in just to pet me. My size and, let’s face it, adorableness, gives me access to all the things happening behind the scenes at TIVOL that you don’t get to see stepping foot inside the doors.

Mom says that it's not a good idea for me to go to work when the temperatures drop, even if all the treats I get during the season’s festivities have left me a little fluffier than normal. So, I spend most of my days wondering what everyone else is doing around the store. I’ve confidently left my best friends, Owl and Lobster, in charge of keeping an eye on TIVOL in the moments I’m not around and they fill me in during our weekly chats.

Like so many of you, I look forward to the warmer months here in Kansas City. Winter may be full of snuggles and holiday treats, but the colder weather keeps me away from the store and I find myself missing my friends and TIVOL family. Mom says that it's not a good idea for me to go to work when the temperatures drop, even if all the treats I get during the season’s festivities have left me a little fluffier than normal. So, I spend most of my days wondering what everyone else is doing around the store, thinking about what other dogs (who are also at home when it’s cold) are doing with their time, and catching up on my favorite shows.

My human friends who work at TIVOL already have enough on their plates with the day-to-day responsibilities they have to keep the store going, and so I’ve confidently left my best (stuffed) friends Owl and Lobster in taking over my role as the watchful eye. They fill me in once a week during naptime when we have our weekly roundups, which always feel like somewhat of a dream.

In my absence, I tasked Owl and Lobster with helping the marketing team prepare the next issue of TIVOL magazine and I’m excited to see what flushes out from all their chats. The Spring/Summer issue was quite an undertaking for the team. They planned three separate photo shoots for this issue with six different models, pairing hundreds of pieces of jewelry and timepieces with thoughtfully curated wardrobes, at three different Kansas City locations. I know it kept Rian, our in-house photographer, busy capturing every detail and moment to ensure that everything looked perfect in the end.

81

My only hope is that Owl and Lobster haven’t been too distracting to the team as they worked to prepare for printing. I told them to watch from a distance, making sure to stay out of the way while the team worked through each article and story that went into creating the pages. Owl and Lobster have a way of turning anytime into playtime though, and they often distract me while I’m working. They are, after all, quite the hoot who leave your sides feeling pinched from all the laughter when they share their witty jokes.

I wonder how our inventory team is holding up after filling in all the holiday orders and restocking beautiful pieces for spring and summer. They are world class, keeping up with all the small details into making sure the store functions smoothly. I bet they had the best food days around the holidays - which is probably the true reason mom keeps me at home. The whole team loves a good snack, which is a big part of why they’re my kind of people.

I heard that the jewelers recently added to their team, which is very exciting news for my TIVOL family. I bet they’re keeping busy sizing jewelry, working on repairs, and making amazing custom pieces that will be treasured by families for generations to come. That’s one thing that I love most about my store, the sentiment that goes into each and every timeless piece that we touch. I have to wonder how much time Owl and Lobster are spending with our jewelers, learning the ins and outs of jewelry creation, service, and maintenance. It’s amazing to watch new apprentices learn how to transform precious metal and gemstones into works of art that will inevitably be enjoyed for generations to come.

I imagine the sales floor has been a lot of fun with excited customers buzzing about the Chiefs winning the big game. Some of my favorite memories at the store involve playing ball with customers and friends and I suspect that our sales team is probably doing a lot of that to fill in during my time at home. Owl and Lobster don’t make their way upstairs very often since they don’t have forward facing roles with the company. Plus, it might scare the customers to see marine life and sky creatures coexisting in the same workplace. They’re an unusual but dynamic work duo, for sure. I’ll have to wait until I’m back in the store to find out how my upstairs crew has been doing and I can’t wait to reconnect with them.

Speaking of reconnecting, it’s time for my scheduled afternoon belly rub…I mean, a very important and impressive meeting with the team. Dogs take time to recharge, too, and it’s just as important for us as it is for you…so I’d better scoot. More in the next edition of TAILS from TIVOL.

LOVE, EMMA
