Step into a Story

STEP INTO A STORY!

The sun is finally here to stay! That’s my story, and I’m sticking to it. After months of rampant rain, cold frigid days, and a spring that didn’t feel so springy, the time has finally come to soak up all the Vitamin D-producing rays we can. This summer, we invite you to step into a story of your own as you enjoy the sun’s warmth and the Town’s various recreation and art activities.

As for our tradition of the summer top ten list, this year we offer you some of our department staff’s favorite reads (in no particular order but, sort of)! These are books so good that if we could read them for the first time again, we undoubtedly would reach for them.

Favorite Reads Top Ten List

11. The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins

10. Harry Potter book series by J.K. Rowling

9. Frankenstein by Mary Shelley

8. Emma by Jane Austen

7. Misery by Stephen King

6. The Other Wes More: One Name, Two Fates by Wes Moore

5. The Twilight Saga by Stephenie Meyer

4. Here’s the Story: Surviving Marcia Brady and Finding My True Voice by Maureen McCormick

3. Great Expectations by Charles Dickens

2. Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption by Laura Hillenbrand

1. Dad Jokes, Terribly Good Dad Jokes by Share the Love Gifts

As you may be aware, we strive to make lives better here in Danville, and we took extra care to keep that in mind when planning this activity guide. While you’re here, please take some time to flip through the pages of this guide and find some fun for you and the whole family. We also challenge you to visit our beautiful parks this sunny season — where you can play or read under a tree, on a bench, or while waiting to enter your camp or class. So, grab your next captivating “park” read, and we’ll see you outside.

Stay Sunny, Danville, and read on!

The front cover is the winning design from our Your Favorite Place in a Story youth art contest. Here is the artist's inspiration: "I chose to draw one of the first chapters in the classic story Alice in Wonderland where Alice meets the Cheshire Cat. I love this part of the story, because the scene conveys a series of emotions. The whimsical surrounding always makes me smile, and the attitude of the Cheshire Cat is just as crazy as the forest. I love to read classic books, especially Alice in Wonderland, and this scene makes the book that much more special!"

LITTLE BLUEBIRD PRESCHOOL ENRICHMENT

Age 3.5-5Y | Mary Mills

Little Bluebird Preschool Enrichment is a wonderful place to begin or extend your child's preschool journey. Our program will compliment any existing program your child is currently attending. Topics will encompass everything from STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Math) to music and literature, all in a nurturing, play-based, developmentallyappropriate setting. Little Bluebird was started by teachers with decades of experience teaching the young children of the TriValley area. Our teacher-to-student ratio provides a space where the teachers can get to know your child and make a meaningful connection. We look forward to providing your child a frontrow seat to new educational, safe, and happy experiences in the afternoon. $10 materials due to instructor on the first day of class. No class on 9/26, 11/1, 11/21, 11/22 & 11/23. Please note that these classes take place in the Fall season, but registration starts in the Summer season.

INVESTMENT STRATEGIES THAT TEND TO WORK WELL IN VOLATILE MARKET

Age 55Y & Up | Town Staff

Global markets have been mired by inflationary pressures, geopolitical disruption, and the threat of a potential recession for much of 2022. What lies ahead for 2023? Will there be a global recession, or will the Feds be able to engineer a soft landing? At this workshop, John Lau CFP®, CPA, will present some of the practices and strategies he believes work well in volatile markets, including using a tilt model of asset allocation vis-à-vis the conventional static model. How position sizing and stop losses may help reduce portfolio volatility. How letting your winners run and stopping your losers short may help outperform. How to stay in cash and potentially earn above-average yields.

CIRQUE DU SOLEIL

Age 55Y & Up | Town Staff

Corteo, which means cortege in Italian, is a joyous procession, a festive parade imagined by a clown. This show brings together the passion of the actor with the grace and power of the acrobat to plunge the audience into a theatrical world of fun, comedy and situated in a mysterious space between heaven and earth. In a Cirque du Soleil first, the stage is central in the arena and divides the venue, with each half of the audience facing the other half, giving a unique perspective not only of the show, but also the performer's eye vew of the audience. The set curtains, inspired by the Eiffel tower, and the central curtains, which were hand painted, give a grandiose feel to the stage. This sets the tone for the poetry of Corteo.

Hello, and welcome to AUGGIE’ s A- Corner!

This page is all about Auggie the Acorn, Danville’s official mascot. Visit this page every issue to see what Auggie is up to this season.

ACTIVITES & GAMES

Auggie loves to learn new things and play games that really put his mind to the test.

Look for a new activity and game handpicked by Auggie in every issue of the Acitivity Guide.

Test your skills and have fun!

PAPER BAG BOOKS CRAFT

Make your own DIY paper bag book with this easy paper bag craft. Best of all are the pockets in this DIY book for stashing treasures!

SUPPLIES

• 3 Paper lunch bags (any size)

• Paper Punch and ribbons (or yarn)

• Markers, Crayons, pencil and paper

STEPS

Auggie's A-Corner COMMUNITY

1. To begin you need to create a flat “tunnel” from each bag. Leave the bag flat and cut off the gusseted part leaving just a flat “tube” of paper. Sack all three bags on top of one another and fold them in half.

2. Working with just one folded paper bag at a time punch a set of holes near the fold. Punch at least three, but more if desired.

3. Place the bag that’s already had holes punched on top of another bag and mark where holes should be punched. Remove the first bag, punch holes on the spots marked, and repeat with the third bag.

4. Use ribbon or yarn to loop through the holes and tie in bows or weave up and down through all of the holes.

RESIDENCY STATUS CLARIFICATION

Those living outside the Danville Town limits include residents of the communities of Alamo and Diablo, Alamo Creek, Bettencourt Ranch, Blackhawk, Bryan Ranch, Monterosso, Shadow Creek and Whitegate housing developments.

The program and facility fees cover a large portion of the actual costs, though Town of Danville residents also partially support the classes, events and facilities through their property tax assessments. Because of this, those program participants and individuals reserving Town facilities who live outside of Danville pay an additional non-resident charge. If you have any questions about this information, call (925) 314-3400.

Special Notice to Alamo Residents living in the Alamo County Service Area R-7A: all R-7A residents are eligible to register for Town-sponsored programs scheduled at Hap Magee Ranch Park during the resident registration period.
