Thousands of volunteers take part in Annual County Clean-Up
The Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council, Cllr John Francis Flynn has thanked the thousands volunteers who took part in the County Clean-Up across Kerry last Saturday. Thousands of bags of litters were collected from the roadsides and towns and villages during the seventh annual clean-up which was organised by KWD Recycling and Kerry County Council.
‘This was another fantastic turnout for the County Clean-Up and shows how civic-minded many of our citizens are when it comes to keeping the county neat and tidy.
‘Despite the rain showers, people of all ages rolled up their sleeves and got involved from early morning.
‘It would be great to harness the involvement of members of the public on Saturday by getting more people to sign up with their local Tidy Towns group or start a group in their own area and to get people out and about collecting litter more often.’
Cllr Flynn thanked KWD Recycling and their team for helping to distribute gloves and bags ahead of the Clean-Up and for arranging to dispose of the bags of rubbish collected.
Noel O’Reilly of KWD Recycling said they were delighted with the turnout and the positive attitude of all the participants. He thanked and congratulated local volunteer groups for their involvement. (photos from Valerie O’Sullivan )

MTU announce new Bachelor of Science course in Veterinary Nursing
Today (Monday 17th April) MTU announced a new course available at the Kerry Campus from September. The Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Veterinary Nursing is a threeyear level 7 programme. This is an exciting development for the School of STEM, building on the success of programmes in Veterinary Bioscience, Wildlife Biology, Animal Bioscience, Agricultural Science, Pharmacy Technician and Pharmaceutical Science.
Commenting on the new programme, Dr Gerard Corkery, Head of Department, Biological and Pharmaceutical Sciences said, the BSc in Veterinary Nursing at the Kerry Campus will prepare students to become competent and accountable veterinary nurses. This programme has a strong educational basis, integrated with professional skills to equip graduates for a career in the field of Veterinary Nursing”.
Students will gain a strong foundation in the principles of veterinary nursing through a blend
of traditional learning methods coupled with the use of immersive technology. Opportunities to apply scientific principles in practicals and workshops are embedded throughout the on-campus delivery and in veterinary practice work placement during the second and third year of the programme. All relevant practical competencies will be covered in relation to dogs, cats, horses, farm animals and exotic species.
Dr Eilish Broderick, Head of School of STEM added, “we are delighted to announce this new programme to add to our suite of STEM programmes in Kerry. The delivery of this programme will be based on the development of four pillars of student development; Core Science and Clinical Knowledge, Veterinary Nursing knowledge, Practical Veterinary Nursing Skills Development and Professionalism of a Veterinary Nurse. This course, as with all our courses, has been developed in close collaboration and consultation with industry
and practicing vets in the region. Graduates of this programme will help to meet the growing demand veterinary nurses across the county and beyond”.
The course is now available through CAO.ie under the code MT784.
Kerry Solid in defence but no points earned! Galway are next!
Kerry FC traveled to the Waterford Regional Sports Centre on Friday night to face Waterford FC, who were placed third in the SSE Airtricity First Division of Irish football.
This was Kerry’s third Munster derby for the season, concluding the first round of fixtures. Billy Dennehy, the Kerry manager, was pleased to have a nearly fully fit squad to choose from, which allowed for competition amongst the players. Although Kerry had narrowly missed out on three points in their previous game against Finn Harps, they gained confidence from the game, which they hoped would carry them through to their game against Waterford. Waterford FC had won three out of their last four games, including a 7-1 win over Kerry’s previous opposition. Before kick-off, a minute of applause was held for Craig Breen, a Waterford native with connections to Kerry, who tragically passed away during a pre-event test for the Croatia Rally. Waterford dominated possession in the first half, with a barrage of corners, but Kerry held strong with an excellent defensive performance. Although Kerry struggled to create chances of their own, they managed to go into halftime at 0-0. In the
second half, Kerry had their first real chance with a long-range effort from Leo Gaxha, but Waterford continued to pressure heavily. Eventually, Ronan Coughlan headed home a corner to put the hosts ahead. Kerry remained positive and nearly scored on a counterattack, but Waterford’s defense held strong. Despite the 1-0 loss, Kerry can be proud of their solid defensive performance and will look to bounce back in their next game against league leaders Galway United.

Coinciding with World Earth Day, the festival will take place at the end of the Tralee-Fenit Greenway in a specially constructed “Festival Village”

Kerry, will come alive with a wide range of events and activities each of which aims to inform, inspire and immerse us in our natural environment. WildMind aims to empower people to make everyday changes in how we think about and treat the planet. Changes that collectively, do make a difference.
The Festival will be officially launched by Duncan Stewart on Friday at 6pm in the Festival Barn at the end of the Greenway. NORA FROM NURTURED COACHING CLARIFYS SOME OF THE MYTHS SURROUNDING PEOPLES EATING HABITS TODAY...
What is Binge Eating Disorder?
Binge eating disorder (BED) isn’t the same as overeating, and it’s not a personal choice. It’s a mental health condition and highly treatable. Suppose you experience repeated episodes of eating large amounts of food in one sitting, and you feel out of control of your eating and maybe even hide your behaviour from others. In that case, you may have a binge eating disorder (BED).
What’s important to keep in mind is that, though the disorder may cause you distress:
• It’s not your fault.
• It’s not a choice.
• You’re not alone.
Binge eating disorder is a condition in which people feel out of control of their eating and consume an objectively large amount of food in one sitting.
It wasn’t recognised as a psychiatric diagnosis until 2013. Having BED is not a choice. It’s a mental health condition that may have a strong genetic component.
Symptoms of binge eating disorder
Here are some of the most common symptoms of BED to help you determine whether you have it:
• repeated episodes of binge eating — at least one episode of binge eating per week for at least 3 months
• eating an objectively large amount of food in a given setting
• the feeling that you have no control and can’t stop eating
• eating alone
• eating fast
• continuing to eat after you feel satisfied until you feel very full or ill
• shame about how much food you eat
• self-disgust, guilt, and depression may accompany an episode of binge eating
BED is also not the same as overeating. Overeating is similar to binge eating but without a loss of control. It often happens during special occasions, such as a birthday dinner. The loss of control in BED is a significant aspect associated with the feelings of distress and impairment you may experience if you have this condition.
Ride Dingle A Success Once Again In West Kerry
On Saturday, over 2,500 cyclists participated in Ride Dingle’s annual 55km and 120km cycles, which took them through the stunning Dingle Peninsula. Despite the rain and winds from the Atlantic, cyclists enjoyed the scenic views of iconic Irish landmarks such as Skellig Michael, the Blasket Islands, Conor Pass, Slea Head, and Dingle’s historical fishing port. Cyclists were also treated to refreshments and shelter at food stops and Paul Geaney’s Bar at the finish line. Ride Dingle partnered with Dingle Peninsula Tourism to promote cycle
tourism and support local suppliers, producers, and accommodation providers. The event also raised €30,000 for local charities last year and is proud to make a significant annual contribution.
This year’s event welcomed former Mayor of West Springfield, Ed Sullivan, who cycled with friends and family to celebrate Dingle’s long-standing ties with Springfield, Massachusetts, and the relocation of residents from Dingle and the Blasket Islands. For the second year in a row, participants could complete the event on an electric bike,
making Ride Dingle accessible to a wider audience of varying abilities and fitness levels. Oliver Kirwan from Elite Event Management expressed his excitement to return to West Kerry for Ride Dingle and thanked Dingle Cycling Club and the volunteers and marshals who ensured the smooth delivery of the event.
Ride Dingle is also grateful to Cono Sur Bicicleta Wines for sponsoring the event this year. The company, which is B-Corp certified and
prioritizes eco-friendly practices in its wine production, believes that sustainability is key to creating a better future for all. Organizers Elite Event Management and Dingle Cycling Club are already looking forward to staging Ride Dingle again next year on Saturday, April 6th, 2024. Overall, the event provides an excellent opportunity to promote tourism, showcase the beauty of the Wild Atlantic Way, and support the local community.

Tralee Toastmasters... 30 Years Young !
Last Sunday, Tralee Toastmasters marked the 30th anniversary of their chartering with a special celebration at Ballyseedy Castle. The event was attended by current and former officers and members of the Club, as well as several distinguished guests including District 71 Director Brenda Lannon, Division Director Maura Meany, Past District Director Gerard Mannix, and Fr Amos from St Brendan’s Parish.
The evening featured a fantastic meal and a range of speeches, songs, comic sketches, and reminiscences, as is typical of any Tralee Toastmasters gathering. To commemorate the occasion, the Club produced a book titled “The Written Hand and the Spoken Word” entirely in-house, compiling speeches and articles from current and former members.
Kieran from KP Therapy answers your questions about Muscles, Aches & Pains.
Q & A – WHAT ARE DOMS?
In recognition of their dedicated service, Brenda and Maura were awarded Honorary Membership of the Club. President James Finnegan expressed his gratitude to all members who have contributed to the success of the Club over the past three decades and who have also played active roles in their local, regional, and national communities. He also thanked the Club Committee, Ballyseedy Castle’s management and staff, and the St Brendan’s Parocial Centre Staff for their support throughout the year.
For more information about Tralee Toastmasters, contact traletoastmasters@ gmail.com.
Q. I’ve recently started a new exercise regime and my muscles feel tired, achy and sore. Is this normal?
A. Yes, this is completely normal. What you’re feeling is DOMS, Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness.
Q. What are DOMS?
A. DOMS is due to temporary muscle damage and inflammation caused by unfamiliar and unaccustomed exercise.
Q.Is it a good thing to have DOMS?
A. Having DOMS is usually a positive sign post exercise. It indicates that the muscle is healing into a stronger state than it was before the activity and hence it means the exercise was indeed effective. It is a normal feeling to experience when starting a new exercise regime, or when you increase the intensity or frequency of your exercise
Q. What can be done to ease DOMS?
A. First of all, try to make sure you are getting adequate nutrition and hydration through the foods and fluids you are taking in. Gentle exercises like walking, swimming, mobility work or cycling can help to ease DOMS. A sports massage or deep tissue massage can also help ease DOMS. Massage can work directly onto the areas of tension, restoring blood flow, flushing out the muscle tissue and relaxing the muscle tissue.
Have a good weekend!

Kerry:

Phenomenal… the destination of the Lidl, division 1,Ladies National League Football final became known last Saturday evening in Croke Park when our county’s senior players met Galway. What a magical year it has been so far for the Kerry Senior ladies, management, the senior executive and our club vice chair and Kerry ladies joint manager Declan Quill. Last Saturday, we watched an incredible game of football and I am sure that most of us were blown away by every element of our senior ladies performance.
Austin Stack Club:
Austin Stacks Minor Football team has won the club’s seventh Co. League title after a comprehensive win over Laune Rangers in Fitzgerald Stadium. The match held on Monday evening was significant as it marked exactly 50 years since the team’s first title in 1973. The team’s mentors were William Kirby, Ritchie Conway, Shane Lucid, and Dave Scanlon. In other news, the Paul Lucey Run for the Rock event will be held on May 1st followed by a family fun day. The run will start at 11 am from the entrance of the Austin Stacks Clubhouse and registration is available online or on the morning of the event. The senior football team will face Kerins O’Rahillys in Strand Road for round 4 of the Co. League on Sunday, April 23, while the B Team will play Finuge at 2 pm. The U11 County Go-Games is scheduled for Thursday, April 20th, while the U13 County League will resume on Tuesday. The U15 team had a disappointing game against Listowel Emmets, while the County League games for U15 have been rescheduled for May 3rd. Lastly, the minor team played against Laune Rangers in Staid an Ghearaltaigh, Killarney, on Monday. All players are expected to attend training on Friday and Sunday at Connolly Park. HAPPY BIRTHDAY TADGH. He
played Club Football back in the 1960s. He succeeded the late Frank King as Club Chairman in 1976 and today he is one of the regular members attending Club games, usually with his good friend Jim Gannon. We refer to Tadgh McMahon (father of Tim and Elma Nix) who celebrates his 80th birthday on this Thursday (20th April). Happy birthday Tadgh from all in the Club and the local community.

John Mitchels played against Kilcummin for the 2nd round of the Donal Curtin Cup, and unfortunately, the home team lost 1-06 to 3-10. At half-time, the scores were 1-.4 to 1.03. Despite the result, John Mitchels can take a lot of positives from the day. The club had 20 players at their disposal, which is a huge positive for the promotion of the game for the club at a senior level. The club will resume training on Thursday night to prepare for Round 3 of the competition.
Under 12 Girls:
The under 12 girls were excited to attend the training session last Thursday, knowing that their first game in the North Kerry League was scheduled for next Tuesday night away to Finuge/St. Senans. Through Our Eyes – A Youth Photography Experience in Tralee
Kerry Local Creative Youth Partnership at Kerry ETB has unveiled an upcoming youth-led photography exhibition called “Through Our Eyes” which will be open to the public from 3:00 pm on April 22nd at Kerry County Museum. The exhibition features a series of large-scale photographic works and accompanying documentary that chronicles a group of young people’s journey through lockdown. The project was designed to help the group cope with the changes in their lives as finding something interesting to do in a closed-down world became a challenge. The exhibition and publication showcase the positive and exciting experiences that the young people have had with photography and creativity during lockdown.
Deirdre Enright, Creative Youth Coordinator at Kerry ETB, said that the project was an exciting
online journey for the young people involved, who were united by their excitement of seeing, looking, and being creative about what they were shooting and sharing. The project was facilitated by artist, educator, and photographer Tara Donoghue, who guided the group through the challenges of the pandemic and helped them adjust to life via Zoom. The group was inspired to produce a photographic book due to the amount of work that was emerging, resulting in the “Through Our Eyes” publication, which was designed and produced by the group. The publication was created to raise funds for the Childhood Cancer Foundation of Ireland, chosen by the group as an express wish to give back to children’s health after experiencing the medical emergency of lockdown. Sales from the publication are in excess of €350, with each copy costing €10.
The exhibition will be open to the public until Sunday, June 25th, and everyone is welcome to attend. For more information, visit the Kerry Local Creative Youth Partnership’s social media page @kerrylcyp,
Tralee Rowing Club take honours home at Skibereen Regatta
At the Skibbereen regatta, 45 rowers spanning Junior 14 to Masters categories, including men and women, competed for two days at the National Rowing Centre. This event marked the first of four grand league regattas of the season and featured favorable rowing conditions despite the lack of sunshine in May. Tralee RC, primarily a sculling club, entered two sweep crews, a junior 18 women’s pair and a men’s club 1 four, for the first time since racing with an 8+ earlier in the year, providing its members with more challenges, options, and learning opportunities. Many of Tralee RC’s rowers competed for the first time in this regatta, including first-timers to finals or winning, earning the club committee’s congratulations. The club celebrated successful performances, including medalists
such as Daragh Morris in the Men’s Junior 15 1x, Sean Morris in the Men’s Junior 18B 1x, and Paula Moloney, Edel O’Sullivan, Fiona Morris, Heidi Giles, and cox Clodagh Morris in the Women’s Masters 4x+. Other commendable results include Luke Passway’s second place in the Men’s J14 1x, Sean Morris’s qualification for the A final in the Men’s Division 1 1x, and Daragh Morris’s win in the C final of the Men’s Div 2 1x. Sadhbh Cadogan and Rosie Giles also secured third place in the C final of the Women’s Division 1 2-, their first time rowing together, while Grace O’Sullivan and Catherine Steward placed third in the B final of the Women’s Div 2 2x, their first time rowing as a double. With this success, Tralee RC looks forward to the rest of the season and hopes to continue learning and
improving.
or email denright@kerryetb.ie. The exhibition offers a unique perspective on life during lockdown, showcasing the creativity and resilience of young people in the face of adversity.
