The Mayor, Alderman Stephen Ross led tributes as he expressed his deepest sympathy to the Royal Family in a special video message. The Council opened books of Condolence and floral tribute sites across the Borough at Antrim Castle Gardens, Ballyclare War Memorial Park, Mossley Mill and also online, to allow our residents to come together and express their condolences and pay tribute to our late Monarch. The Mayor and Deputy Mayor were honoured to attend the Accession Proclamation at Hillsborough Castle and a special thanksgiving service at St Anne’s Cathedral attended by King Charles III and the Queen Consort.

It was fitting that the Platinum Jubilee Garden at Antrim Castle Gardens hosted the Accession Proclamation for Co Antrim, on Sunday 11 September, when not even the inclement weather kept the crowds away as hundreds attended to hear King Charles III announced as the new King. A special meeting of Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council was held on Monday 12 September to allow Elected Members to pay homage to the late Queen. During the ten-day mourning period, the Mayor delivered books of condolence to the NI Children’s Hospice and numerous nursing homes across the Borough affording our most vulnerable residents the opportunity to leave their own personal messages. A Moment of Reflection candlelight service took place at both Mossley Mill and Antrim Castle Gardens on Sunday 18 September when a minutes silence was observed at 8pm joining millions across the UK. These poignant services were an opportunity to look back at the life and legacy of the late Queen Elizabeth II and give thanks for her seventy years of selfless service and devoted duty. All Council services and facilities were closed on Monday 19 September as a mark of respect for the State Funeral of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
