LOVE LETTER TO NORTHERN IRELAND MAKES IT TO GRAMMY AWARDS N

orthern Irish hymn-writing duo, Keith and Kristyn Getty, will return to Belfast in June to perform at the SSE Arena following their first GRAMMY nomination for their album Confessio – Irish American Roots, which the couple calls their “love letter to Northern Ireland”. The Gettys travelled to the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles for the 65th GRAMMY Awards in February, having been nominated in the Best Roots Gospel Album category alongside world renowned artists such as Willie Nelson, the Gaither Vocal Band and Karen Peck & New River. Perhaps most well-known for their song In Christ Alone, which Keith wrote on the back of an electricity bill in a converted pigsty at his house in Country Antrim, Keith and Kristyn Getty have written and recorded some of the most popular modern hymns sung in our churches today. Confessio, the album which gained the Gettys their GRAMMY nomination, showcases 15 modern and timeless hymns including renditions of Be Thou My Vision, Amazing Grace and It is Well With My Soul, as well as their own In Christ Alone and Immigrant’s Song. It highlights traditional Irish melodies and instrumentation and features performances from an array of guests including multiple GRAMMYaward-winning artists Alison Krauss, Ricky Skaggs and Kirk Whalum, as well as their daughters making an appearance.

PAGE12-13.indd 2

Keith Getty said:“For seventeen centuries here, people have passed their faith and their music on, and we are just another little link in that chain. When we were home during the pandemic, we decided to write what we called our love letter to Northern Ireland. It is an album which looks at the history of music and faith, but in one sense it also tells our story as well. It begins with the Confessio which was St Patrick’s first hymn, and then it finishes with Kristyn and Alison Krauss singing In Christ Alone. Ricky Skaggs came and recorded a number of songs, illustrating the Irish American experience, with the album finishing with more of the Americanstyle hymns”. “Although we missed out on a GRAMMY Award this time, even receiving a nomination in the first place is a privilege and a huge encouragement to us both, as well as the rest of our team. We are so proud that an album dedicated to our home, and the Christian heritage of the West made it all the way to the GRAMMYs, the ultimate accolade in music”. Their own rendition of Amazing Grace was recorded in Harry’s Shack on Portstewart Strand during the pandemic, and It is Well With My Soul was recorded at Downhill Beach and Mussenden Temple. A further three songs were recorded in Keith and Kristyn’s carport at their home outside Ballybogey. Keen to represent Northern Ireland on a world stage, Kristyn wore dresses designed by the awardwinning Newry-based designer, Shauna Fay, on the

red carpet. Shauna is renowned for her stunning bespoke designs and ready to wear dresses which have long proven to be a hit with locals. The couple’s GRAMMY nomination also came ahead of the Sing! World Tour which will kickstart at Belfast’s SSE Arena on Saturday 17 June 2023 before shows in the Star Theatre, Singapore and the Sydney Opera House, Australia.

“Although we missed out on a GRAMMY Award this time, even receiving a nomination in the first place is a privilege and a huge encouragement to us both.”

The Belfast concert will feature an array of guest artists and the Getty’s band of internationally renowned musicians, all accompanied by the New Irish Arts Orchestra and a mass choir. “It is always an tremendous honour to play in front of any audience, but there is something incredibly special about performing in front of a home crowd, especially following our GRAMMY nomination for an album dedicated to our home”. “Northern Ireland has a special place in our hearts; it is where Kristyn and I met and where we return to with our four children each year. We always tell our audiences around the globe that Northern Ireland is the best place in the world, so it is incredibly special to stage the first leg of the Sing! World Tour at the SSE Arena. We hope the concert will be a memorable evening where people can come together to sing their faith”. As ambassadors of hymn-writing, Keith and Kristyn have performed for presidents, prime ministers, and host sell-out concerts each year at Kennedy Centre and Carnegie Hall, as well as their own “Sing” Conference & Festival which welcomes over 15,000 people to Nashville each year.

PAGE12-13.indd 3

Keith and Kristyn now divide their time between Nashville and Northern Ireland, returning to the North Coast in the summer months with their children. www.gettymusic.com/

EDITOR’S LETTER

EDITOR: Christopher Sherry

Same Again?

DEPUTY EDITOR: Joanne Harkness EDITORIAL MANAGER: James Sherry

It will be interesting to see how the ‘new’ Northern Ireland football team manager, Michael O’Neill, fairs this time around. I was slightly surprised when I heard that he had been reappointed. Although, when you think about it, the logic is pretty sound: he was very successful last time around so why not have more of the same? Also, he had lost his job at Championship side Stoke and the national team just happened to be without a manager at the same time (funny that). Anyway, I’m not totally sure whether going back is always the right thing to do but, as they say, ‘football is a funny old game’; we will see. O’Neill attended our Awards a few years back to pick up a Special Merit Award on behalf of the Northern Ireland men’s team. Hopefully we will have cause to invite him back in the coming years as a result of his team’s successes on the pitch. Which brings me neatly to the launch of the Ulster Tatler Awards 2023 and the Ulster Tatler Influential Women of the Year Awards 2023. If you turn to pages 92 and 52 respectively you will see that voting is now up and running for both events. As ever, we are keen to harvest as many votes as possible; please take a moment to do so for either or both. QUOTE FOR THE MONTH

COLUMN March 2023

LIFE & TIMES EDITED BY KATHY CLUGSTON

Kathy Clugston is a freelance radio presenter. She chairs the long-running BBC Radio 4 programme ‘Gardeners’ Question Time’ and presents the weekly entertainment show ‘The Ticket’ on BBC Radio Ulster.

Hug It Out This month, Kathy discusses the power of hugging.

I was in a taxi with my Mum recently when our amiable chat with the driver was infiltrated by a news report. A secondary school in England had banned all forms of physical contact, we were told. Any kind of touching between pupils, including hugging and hand-holding, would be outlawed and punished. We rolled our eyes and wondered aloud what the world was coming to. “Those young people won’t know what to do when a friend is upset - or bereaved,” said the cabbie, and we agreed. I assume decisions such as these are not reached lightly; nowadays, as we know, there are complicated issues at play. We are all too aware of the past failures of institutions, including schools, to deal with bullying and abuse and it’s understandable that a school would try to ensure inappropriate behaviour wasn’t tolerated on its premises. But stopping children from hugging - that most primal demonstration of friendship, support and comfort - did seem like taking a sledgehammer to crack a nut. A complex discussion about healthy relationships and consent didn’t seem appropriate for our short car journey but my Mum did say something I wasn’t expecting. “There never used to be hugging here,” she said, “especially between men. They didn’t even shake hands when I was young… my father would touch the rim of his hat.” Back in the 1940s and 50s married couples in TV sitcoms slept in twin beds, pregnancy wasn’t shown (until Lucille Ball, and still the word ‘pregnant’ was a no-no) and homophobia was rampant. Friendly folk we Northern Irish may be, but we haven’t always been what you might call emotionally demonstrative. In those days a man had no reason to touch another man unless one of

them had just scored a goal, in which case they might be lucky and get a pat on the back. I seem to recall that even in the 1980s and 90s most people were aghast at any kind of PDA (public display of affection) and men still rarely embraced in public. It’s amazing how much has changed in just two generations. While no one likes standing next to a couple snogging the faces off each other, witnessing two people - any two people - expressing affection no longer has us breaking out in hives. Hugging is a natural human instinct. Small babies physically need the touch of another’s skin; as adults, too, we suffer without it. Studies have shown that hugging can reduce levels of stress hormones in the body, help keep our blood pressure down and increase the production of oxytocin, the so-called “bonding hormone”, which promotes feelings of relaxation and security. The word ‘hug’ itself is believed to come from the Norwegian ‘hugga’ which means to comfort or console. Be aware though that a quick squeeze won’t cut it; in 2021, psychologists at Goldsmiths, University of London, found that a hug of between five and 10 seconds is the optimal duration for reaping the feelgood benefits. Of course, you must use this knowledge advisedly. How much contact it’s acceptable to inflict on strangers varies between cultures. Compare Italians smothering each other with kisses with the Japanese maintaining a respectful physical distance at all times. It’s interesting to note how our own behaviour has changed since the Covid 19 pandemic.

Quite a few people I know found social distancing a welcome relief from the unsolicited embraces of people to whom they’d just been introduced, and a few friends still prefer a fist bump to the more intimate handshake. Where once I might have automatically hugged an acquaintance, I now find myself scanning them for nonverbal indications or even asking if such a move would be welcome. In a world where many of us have more one-on-one contact with our phones than other people, where our understanding of consent is evolving, where viruses are mutating and an epidemic of loneliness is spreading, might we all one day fall prey to the condition starkly known as ‘touch starvation’ or ‘skin hunger’? I do hope not. Group hug, anyone?

THIS MONTH’S OBSESSIONS: The Circus – A series of interconnected short stories by Belfast writer Paul McVeigh written for BBC Radio 4 and set in the north of the city. Beautifully read by local actors, they’re available on BBC Sounds.

Tank tops – They say you shouldn’t wear things that come back into fashion if you wore them the first time round but knitted tank tops are surely a classic. Dressier than a jumper, they keep you nice and cosy under a blazer or jacket.

Pitted dates in a block – I remembered as a child eating dates that had been squashed into a sliceable mass. I was thrilled to discover you can still buy them in a well-known health food shop. Once you’ve tried a sliced date Veda sandwich, you’ll never look back.

HONOURS

Royally Rewarded This month Ulster Tatler features a selection of photographs from those members of the community recognised in the Queen’s Honours.

LISA BENNETT-DIETRICH OBE

PAULA JORDAN MBE

Lisa Bennett-Dietrich, CEO of Community Relations in Schools (CRIS), was honoured for services to Peace Education and Community Reconciliation in the Platinum Jubilee honours list. CRIS, funded by the Community Relations Council (CRC) Core Funding Scheme, has been forging relationships between schools since the early 1980s, working with hundreds of schools and tens of thousands of pupils, school staff, parents and carers. In the early days CRIS - set up by a group of teacher activists - facilitated contact between schools that would have been positioned, apparently irrevocably, on opposing sides of the community divide at a time when the Troubles were at their height. Over the years they also spearheaded curriculum material to facilitate dialogue between pupils across all phases of education as well as training teachers to build Community Relations projects within their schools. Lisa’s own work over the years has been focused on supporting families from Holy Cross Nursery in the Ardoyne and Edenderry Nursery in the Shankill, whose schools had created a scheme buddying the children with their counterparts in the other community.

Paula Jordan was awarded an MBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List, for services to Special Education in Northern Ireland. As one of the last recipients of the MBE by Queen Elizabeth ll, Paula was invited to attend her funeral in Westminster Abbey on 19th September, representing Education and her Education colleagues in Northern Ireland. A few weeks later Paula received her official invitation to the Investiture Ceremony for Tuesday 29 November 2022 in Windsor Castle, where she was accompanied by her sister Lynn, her brother-in-law Paul and goddaughter Amy. Paula was presented her award by King Charles, who took a genuine interest in her work. Speaking of her experience Paula said: “He asked me about my length of time in Special Education and I told him that I was in my 36th year, at which he joked that I did not look burnt out yet! He asked where the school was, about the pupils and their needs and about the staff, then said, ‘Thank God for people like your staff and yourself’ who work with these children and young people. I felt that he was genuinely interested in what I did and in the welfare of the pupils and staff.”

SIMON DARBY MBE Simon Darby, 36, from North Belfast, has been recognised for his vital work supporting families living with cancer. Simon has been working for Young Lives vs Cancer, the UK’s leading charity for children and young people with cancer, since 2011. Simon said: “For me, the honour is reflected back to those young people and parents who have allowed me the privilege to be part of their cancer experience over the last 10 years. “I wouldn’t be receiving this honour for my contribution to cancer services for young people in Northern Ireland had those families not said ‘yes’ to my support. I am part of a wider team within the hospitals and charity and very much am daily empowered by my nursing, medical and social care colleagues as we work together to deliver our service, so this honour is owed to them also.” Simon, one of five boys growing up in Belfast, and civilly partnered to Gerard McGarry, said he knew early on he wanted to work with young adults and have a career in social work. His own experience of finding a lump in his testicle aged 19, during his university degree, has also helped him to empathise with young people facing cancer. 32

HOSPITALITY GRADUATIONS

Greg McKinley, Colin Johnston, Elaine Kelly, Ashley Douglas, Laura Millar, Eddie McKeever and James Perry.

On Thursday 16th February Galgorm had the pleasure of hosting the graduation of 16 students from the Northern Ireland Hospitality School (NIHS) in their achievement of obtaining their Level 2 City & Guilds in Professional Bartending (Cocktails). The NIHS overall goal is to link the hospitality industry into a community of mutual growth and understanding. They believe the first step to this goal is the spread of education and ideas. To this end, they designed and introduced courses aimed at people preparing their journey into the world of hospitality whilst benefiting from ‘earn while you learn’. Events like these demonstrate the importance and value of investment in people and help to create new career opportunities. Galgorm extends thanks to all involved: The Gallaher Trust, Northern Regional College, Mid and East Antrim Borough Council, MAPAL Group. 48

Jane Hardy is a feature writer who has interviewed a few of the big names from Arlene Foster to Mrs Thatcher.

March 2023

INTERVIEW

Fitting the Role to a Tee Golf enthusiast Jane Wells MBE talks handicaps, receiving her gong from King Charles and what being a Deputy Lord Lieutenant really entails. She is relishing her role as one of several deputy Belfast Lord Lieutenants in the run up to the Coronation, as she tells Jane Hardy.

T

hey say discretion is the better part of valour. It’s also one of the key qualities of a top PR/marketing expert like Jane Wells, founder of prestigious JComms. Talking after she had spent a morning on the golf course and lunched in her club, Jane Wells (65) agrees that her business requires integrity and says it shouldn’t really be described, even jokingly, as the ‘dark art’. “Integrity and discretion are key to good marketing, also truthfulness. Reliability too. Our new MD Chris Harrison is one of the best people I’ve ever worked with, full of ideas and so reliable. If he says he’ll do something, you know it will get done.” Deftly, she fields questions on the future of the Monarchy but is clearly very enthusiastic about the value of her new part-time job. She is one of around twenty deputies who support Lord Lieutenant Dame Fionnuala Jay O’Boyle. “Currently there are about 23 of us, Fionnuala gives us duties that are suited to our skills. She’s the first port of call but if somebody needs representation, she will call on us.” Recently Ms Wells has visited a minesweeper in Belfast port. “I loved boarding the vessel which was actually quite small.” Naturally, we turn to the Royal event of the year, King Charles’ coronation on May 6. I wondered what this Deputy Lord Lieutenant would be up to and whether she would hold or attend a party. “It hasn’t been totally worked out yet but I shall be glued to the television and there might be other things. “There may well be champagne.” Another cork-popping moment was when Ms Wells received her gong. Jane says now it was fabulous but a surprise. “It came as a complete shock. You get a letter six weeks before the event, asking you if you want to accept the honour, and that it is totally confidential. I couldn’t tell a soul about it.” She reveals that she didn’t even breathe a word to her husband, retired doctor Martin, or her three children; Sian, Duncan and Petra. But Jane was able to tell them on her birthday, December 24, and the happy ceremony took place at Windsor Castle on January 31st this year. Jane and Martin flew to London the day before to attend an opera at Covent Garden, as this musical genre is one of her passions. “We saw The Magic Flute and it was superb.” Discussing the rather eye-watering high cost of opera seats there,

Jane Wells says this underlines how fortunate we are here to have the internationally recognised Northern Ireland Opera to satisfy our need for super-dramatic plots and loud arias. “Interestingly, the first director of NI Opera, Oliver Mears, is now in charge at Covent Garden, and we have the genius Cameron Menzies at the helm here. I hope he stays a long time.” Not just a fan in the stalls, the Deputy Lord Lieutenant is an enthusiastic member of the Board. Wells was thrilled that the new King Charles presented her with her gong. Apparently he was charming. “To be honest, I was very nervous just beforehand.” Award recipients are ushered across the room, get their medal (“They pin a hook on your outfit so he can easily slot on the beautiful medal.”) Etiquette requires you to have a conversation with the monarch. “I did wonder what we’d talk about but needn’t have worried. I received it for services to PR and charity and King Charles was very interested. They tell you the conversation is finished when he shakes your hand, then you have to walk away backwards.” We discuss the sartorial implications for this very important event. “I didn’t go to the shops but went to Una Rodden’s wonderful studio. I bought a navy coat-dress, then found a hat, but discovered it wasn’t quite the right shade as I didn’t realize there are a lot of different shades of navy.” This was no problem to Rodden who deployed some fabric paint. “I was just worried it was going to rain,” Jane says now with a laugh. Wells selects as one of her proudest PR moments working in Brussels with the late David Trimble. “He was one of three MEPs from here, working with John Hume and Ian Paisley. What impressed me was the way they got on and worked well together. Later I was lucky enough to be tasked with organising the events when Mr Trimble and John Hume got the Nobel peace prize in 1998.” This involved working on receptions, the drink and food, and they were very successful… Originally a French teacher, when she hit thirty, Jane Wells decided she’d taught enough conditional verbs at schools in the Caribbean and Belmont and needed new stimulation. “I gained a work experience post with John Laird and loved it from the start. When there was a vacancy for a junior account executive, I got the job.” Wells mentions,

Northern Ireland during the Troubles, I knew I had got her all wrong”. He adds: “Jane has endless energy which I envy her and her irrepressible can-do sense of optimism is frankly inspiring. She’s kept me going at times when I would have given up. I’m lucky to have her as a friend as well as a workmate.” In her spare time, Jane Wells relaxes on Malone golf course where she spends quite a bit of time. “Oh, three times a week and I have lessons from the man I call my golf therapist, Phil Murphy.” The sportiness extends to other sports and not many people realise Jane Wells was an award-winning water skier in her youth who represented Ireland. To this day, when on holiday with children Sian, Duncan and Petra, she can surprise fellow occupants of the beach who may see a middle-aged woman, not suspecting that once behind the boat on the water, she’ll outstrip them all with ease. While not exactly a foodie, Jane Wells relishes a good meal at a restaurant with her husband. She patronises Northern Ireland Opera and recently enjoyed one of their intimate salon series concerts at Hillsborough Castle. Wells says her role in the Lieutenancy is to help promote Belfast and to encourage local business as well as the integration of the diverse new groups in town. “There was a big Lieutenancy lunch at one of Belfast’s Chinese restaurants, Lee Garden, to celebrate the oldest Northern Irish immigrant group.” She says that Deputy Lord Lieutenants have to retire at seventy whether they want to or not. You sense the next five years in this exciting voluntary role will be a very fulfilling, rather than a bumpy, ride.

Jane pictured at Windsor Castle after receiving her MBE.

with pride, founding a pioneering organisation that promoted Northern Ireland via food (“we had cheeses and so on”) as well as its organisations. Later in the 1990s she started at JComms, which handles a range of significant accounts and is also involved in public sector lobbying. She recalls with pride the way her company took on the World Police & Fire Games in 2013, when toned guys from other countries seemed to have overtaken the town. “We promoted it as the friendliest ever games, due to its location here, and that worked very well.” Jane’s business partner for much of that time was noted food critic and political analyst Joris Minne. They were contemporaries at Queen’s University and met up again at a networking event. “We sat next to each other, caught up, then I just asked if he’d like to join us.” He did, is now Chair of the company, and the rest is marketing history. They have successfully promoted a range of clients, including The Ulster Museum, arts festivals and The Belfast Telegraph group. Jane Wells says; “We complemented each other well. Joris is brilliant and a natural front man.” He returns the compliment, telling me: “When I first met Jane Wells in 1977, I thought she was one of those Sloane Rangers, ie posh, jolly hockey sticks and Pimms. But when I saw her selling tickets and taking money at the door for nighttime gigs across

Spring Has Sprung It’s spring again! Mother nature’s reminder that no matter how difficult life can feel, this is the season of rebirth and regeneration; birdsong and pretty flowers everywhere. The clocks go forward this month and there’s love in the air! Welcome to spring 2023!

Indulge, Unwind and Relax Most people know about the power of scents in affecting our moods. Studies show that scent is one of the most powerful factors that can impact how we feel. The scents we use in our homes, offices, or wherever we spend time can really make a difference in our moods. Just in time for feel-good spring, luxury fragrance brand STORIES Parfums has launched two limited-edition candle trio sets, inspired by, but not identical to, its awardwinning Iconic STORIES N º.01 and STORIES N º.02 Eau de Parfum. Made with love using organic ingredients with a wax blend of responsibly-sourced soy, coconut and rapeseed oils, these divine trio of candles are handcrafted using 100% cotton candlewicks and methods respectful to the environment, reflecting the luxury brand’s commitment to sustainability. All packaging is recyclable and the chic glass jars can be refilled and elegant white gift boxes repurposed. The candles can be burned separately or together for a truly indulgent olfactory experience. Each set includes three x 70g candles, with 45 hours burn time per candle. You’ll need to be quick, as these limited editions have only 500 available per set. Indulge yourself.

Wishing each of these wonderful couples a lifetime of love and happiness. Jordan Humphries and Ben Arnold.

GIRL ABOUT TOWN EDITED BY NUALA MEENEHAN

Nuala Meenehan works in the media and is a leading model.

The Perfect Vintage After much deliberation and a lot of research, I’ve recently invested in some mid-century modern furniture. I’ve been looking for a dining table and chairs for what seems like years! Firstly, I started looking at new pieces, I’d an idea in my head of the style I wanted and, quite frankly, it just didn’t exist or if it did it was badly designed and very uncomfortable. Then I discovered, Betty’s Lounge, a locally based mid-century modern furniture and homeware specialist, and am now obsessed with pretty much everything they have, plus I found the table and chairs of my dreams. There’s a host of benefits to choosing pre-loved. It makes sense that furniture that’s been around for decades is better made and will be beautifully designed; you know the saying, they don’t make them like they used to! Plus, it’s so much better for the environment. For inspiration, head to bettyslounge.com

NI Fashion Designer Shines Bright Like a Diamond One of Ireland’s most famous fashion designers, Jonathan Anderson, who was born in Magherafelt, designed global superstar Rihanna’s outfit for her Super Bowl LVII halftime show last month. The Co. Derry fashion designer, founder of JW Anderson, is the world-renown creative director of Spanish luxury house LOEWE, who created the mega star’s all-red jumpsuit and breastplate ensemble for the half-time show, watched by a whopping 113 MILLION viewers. The Umbrella diva wore a red leather top covered by an all-in-one bedazzled cargo suit with matching red gloves. It’s the mega-star’s first live performance in over five years and, oh my, how we’ve missed you!

Fly Me To The Moon

Space Adventures have announced they’ll be charging $150 million per seat to fly to the moon, earth’s hottest new destination. The price includes months of ground-based training. Check with your travel provider if drinks and snacks are included on the voyage. Before you book your seat, I should warn you, tickets are fly-by mission only, you won’t be landing on the Moon! Don’t Suffer in Silence March is endometriosis awareness month; to highlight endometriosis and more, we chat to Sibley Berty who has set up Femity – an online community for women experiencing health issues.

THE NUMBER ONE WIG SPECIALIST IN IRELAND

WIG & HAIRPIECE BOUTIQUE HAIRLOSS CLINIC

Tell us a bit about Femity. Femity is an online community and reviewsbased platform for women experiencing female health issues. Our goal is to drive awareness around new technology, treatments and services that can help to improve women’s health. Why did you decide to set this website up? As someone who has suffered with PCOS and endometriosis for the past ten years, I understand first-hand how difficult it can be. It can take years to get a diagnosis, let alone the right treatment, and women are suffering as a result. Chronic pain, unwanted symptoms, infertility and mental health issues are just some of the things a large proportion of women are struggling with. One positive is that the femtech industry is finally getting more funding. There is so much exciting new technology that can help women to take control of their health. I want to help raise awareness around this new technology, whilst building a community where women can find support in one another.

For anyone who doesn’t know, what is PCOS and endometriosis? Both are complex conditions that deserve further explanation, but, simply put, according to Verity, the leading charity for PCOS: “PCOS is an endocrine disorder whereby polycystic ovaries are one of an array of possible symptoms caused by an underlying hormone imbalance.” The charity Endometriosis UK define endometriosis as, “the name given to the condition where cells similar to the ones in the lining of the womb (uterus) are found elsewhere in the body.” Why is it important that women don’t suffer in silence? There’s a huge gender health gap happening right now. In 2021, the UK government conducted research on women’s health outcomes, which revealed that the UK has the largest female health gap in the G20 and the 12th largest globally. As of 2022, there were over 600,000 women on the UK gynaecology waiting list. That’s over 600,00 women not getting the help they need. We deserve better.

The Word

Could you benefit from a Gait Scan & Custom-Made Orthotics? The key to a Healthier Body could be right under your feet! Did you know that your feet, and how you walk, can have a direct impact on the rest of your body? A supposedly small problem with your feet can change the way you walk, which can then affect your posture, put stress on your joints and lead to pain in your knees, hips and back. Custom-made orthotics can be part of the treatment that The Clinic at Vic-Ryn offers to help relieve conditions such as Plantar Fasciitis, Achilles Tendonitis, bunion or heel pain, but interestingly they can also really help with knee, hip and back pain. We were finalists in the Excellence in Customer Care Category - sponsored by Ulster Tatler in the Lisburn and Castlereagh

City Awards. At the clinic, physiotherapists and podiatrists are trained to assess your gait, and use a computerised Gait Scanner as part of a full Bio-mechanical Assessment. They examine how you are standing and walking, whilst looking at the muscle function of your entire lower limbs. They perform a computerised analysis using Gait Scan technology, and by collating this clinical data, individual prescription orthotics are made. Clients are welcome to a printout report from their Gait Scan, which shows clearly if and why custom-made orthotics could be beneficial, as part of a treatment package. See what your Gait Scan tells the Clinic about you - and how they can help!

Please contact The Clinic at Vic-Ryn and they will be delighted to advise and help you. PHONE:- 028 9262 2912 E-MAIL:- info@theclinicatvicryn.co.uk You can also book a Bio- Mechanical Assessment ONLINE at www.theclinicatvicryn.co.uk

EDITED BY REBECCA NELSON

Rebecca is founder and Director of Physiotherapy at Apex Clinic and Apex Headache Clinic.

Apex Headache Clinic successfully treating headaches, migraines, vertigo and tinnitus for over 20 years This month, Apex Headache Clinic founder and Spinal & Headache Physiotherapy Specialist, Rebecca Nelson, discusses headaches, migraines, vertigo and tinnitus and how Apex Headache Clinic, the first drug-free headache and migraine clinic in Ireland, has been successfully treating and clearing these debilitating conditions.

Are headaches or migraines destroying your life? At Apex Headache Clinic, we witness daily how persistent headaches and migraines can ruin the quality of people’s lives, leaving them desperate to find a solution that brings relief to their pain. Many people don’t realise that headaches or migraines can be triggered from damage or stiffness in the joints of the upper neck region of the spine. Poor posture or hours spent slumped over desks can cause recurrent neck-triggered headaches and migraines, as can repeated heavy lifting or a previous fall or injury. In many

Is vertigo or dizziness getting you down? At Apex Headache Clinic, we have extensive experience in treating vertigo or dizziness. Dizziness originating from the upper neck region of the spine is called cervical vertigo and is commonly overlooked as a source of vertigo. It originates from stiffness or damage of the upper two neck joints of the spine. Usually, the person has no actual neck pain, only dizziness. At Apex Headache Clinic, we have been successfully diagnosing and treating cervical vertigo for over 20 years. During your initial consultation, one of our specialist physiotherapists will assess your neck to establish if it is involved in causing your vertigo and to differentiate it from vertigo from the inner ear. A treatment plan can then be started to clear it. One of the features of cervical vertigo is that it doesn’t respond to drugs or any treatment given for inner ear vertigo. With our specialist treatment regime of physiotherapy, The Nelson Vertigo Approach™, patients usually begin to experience relief within just a few sessions.

cases the person has no neck pain at all, only headaches or migraines. At Apex Headache Clinic we understand your pain. We know from years of treating headaches and migraines, that our specialist manual physiotherapy regime called The Nelson Headache Approach™, which is offered at no other clinic in Ireland, is very likely to be the long-term cure that you’re looking for. We take a firm stance that the cure for pain isn’t painkillers and getting to the source of the problem is much more effective.

Is tinnitus causing you frustration? Tinnitus can be heard as a

apex

ringing, hissing, whistling, buzzing or clicking sound that can be intermittent, or constant. It’s an intrusive, annoying and, in some cases, devastating condition for sufferers. Although commonly associated with damage to the hearing system, tinnitus can also be caused by injury or stiffness of the upper neck joints and this is often overlooked as usually there is no neck pain. The good news regarding tinnitus which is triggered from the neck is that, in most cases, it can be treated and cleared at Apex Headache Clinic. Treat and beat pain at its source As with all niggles, aches and pains, we recommend that you get to the root cause of your symptoms as soon as possible. Once diagnosed, Apex Headache Clinic’s specialist manual physiotherapy treatment regimes can clear all of these conditions, restoring your quality of life, allowing you to get on with enjoying life again free from your symptoms. “I have got my life back thanks to Apex Clinic ” For 65-year-old Valerie Hamilton from Ballygowan, life was a struggle. The onset of back and leg pain was having a devastating impact on her life. After trying many different treatments to get to the source of her pain, she visited Apex Clinic, Belfast, desperate to find a cure. Here, Valerie describes how the clinic’s unique regime of specialist manual physiotherapy treatment, called The Nelson Spinal ApproachTM, cleared her back and leg pain, meaning that she could finally get her life back on track. Valerie, when did your back and leg pain begin? The pain in my back and right leg started originally in June 2020 and then suddenly it worsened in the summer of 2021. The severe leg pain came on very suddenly and I couldn’t think of anything that I had done to cause it. I attended my GP who gave me medication which didn’t help and I also saw an orthopaedic spinal surgeon privately who carried out various tests including an MRI scan. He

Apex Clinic herself and she could see how much pain I was in. She spoke about my condition with the Director of Physiotherapy, Rebecca Nelson, who is a Spinal Physiotherapy Specialist and she said that it was likely that they could help me from the information that she had. I had nothing to lose, so I made an appointment for an initial assessment as I was willing to try anything to help my terrible pain. How has your life changed since having treatment? The change has been huge. I no longer need to use crutches for walking which allows me to take my dogs out for a walk again as I wasn’t able to do this for months. My back and leg pain are now 99% better and I’m thrilled! I feel like I have got my life back. I now attend Apex Clinic once every 6 weeks for maintenance treatment.

didn’t recommend surgery but instead sent me for spinal injections. Unfortunately, there was no significant relief with these and I was still in constant pain.

What advice would you offer someone suffering with leg pain or back pain? If you are suffering with spinal problems I would definitely say book an appointment at Apex Clinic as the relief I’ve got from my treatment there is wonderful.

and it had an awful impact on my life. I couldn’t stand up straight and I had to use 2 crutches to help me walk around. I tried physio elsewhere which didn’t help either.

How did the pain affect your life? The pain I had was horrendous

ASK THE EXPERT

Your day, your way Ulster Tatler speaks to makeup artist Bliain Fitzpatrick to get advice on all things bridal. When did you start out doing makeup? My introduction to the world of makeup and beauty began in 2007 when I moved to London to study art, I got a part time job with a beauty company and from there I moved to other premium makeup brands within the West End of London, developing my skills from amazing artists of the time. What do you love most about your job? The element I love most is the result, I love the look on a client’s face when she sees her dream look realised, and it’s a great privilege to be part of a wedding day. I also love working with beautiful products. Do you have any particular career highlights? Stand-out moments for me are varied between working on fashion shows, editorial campaigns and working with clients that love being pampered and that get excited about makeup and skincare. It is such a personal service working so closely with

clients and developing a look that they want to present to the world, it’s a real honour. What makes bridal makeup different to other makeup jobs? Bridal makeup is different because it is more of a collaboration, especially because you build a relationship with the bride over a period of time. The look itself has a lot of considerations, especially in how the makeup will photograph, therefore, a bride often has to wear MORE makeup on her big day so that it translates through the camera lens. The look itself needs to be planned in advance so that no time is wasted on a busy wedding day morning changing things around and experimenting – that is all explored in the trial. When should a bride to be book makeup for her big day? This really depends on the amount of time between proposal and wedding date. I’ve had brides book me with two weeks’ notice, some two years notice. My advice would be to book a trial as soon as possible and then secure your artist after that. Tastes and styles can change very suddenly so I would encourage a trial as early as possible so that a relationship can be built with your artist to discuss ideas and looks casually on the run up to the wedding. What does a bride need to consider when choosing her makeup artist? There are factors to consider other than if a makeup artist is good at applying makeup: I would consider rapport, personality, style, hygiene, budget, and quality of work. Ask yourself the question; would you be happy with your makeup artist to attend the wedding as your guest? If the answer is no, they are probably not the artist for you. After all, a wedding is the most special day and should feel comfortable at all times. What are the trends in bridal makeup for 2023 and beyond? Trends aren’t always important when it comes to bridal makeup especially as it is such as personal day – what others are doing isn’t so important. However, in general, makeup has made a return to pretty, feminine beauty makeup. We are moving away from the super severe draginspired cut creases and harsh lines of recent years and opting for elegance again, which I’m a huge fan of. Do you have any tips for keeping makeup looking freshly done for the whole day? This all begins with how well the skin is prepped on the morning of – in general I love to spend around 20 minutes just prepping the skin to begin with. I start with MAC FIX + and saturate the skin, I build in a suitable eye and face primer such as Strobe Cream or Bobbi Brown Vitamin enriched face base and I layer the base work in stages. A good setting powder such as Mac Blot powder and a lipstick/gloss should be all you need the rest of the day for touch ups.

that going on your big day. If you suddenly remove your signature look you won’t feel like yourself and most likely will feel uncomfortable the entire day. Don’t over complicate your makeup, stay away from wet cheek glosses and glitter – this will get everywhere as the day is long and lots of contact with other people can make this hard to maintain. What is your advice to anyone with a big bridal party, do they need to book more than one makeup artist? This really depends, I would allow around one hour per person on the morning of, for good quality, well-prepped makeup – that’s how long good makeup takes. Bridal parties are often around 6-8 people, any more than that, your makeup artist will most likely bring an assistant on the day.

The Word

A Sustainable Addition To The Kitchen Over the last few years, there has been a significant shift in customers’ needs and priorities. Climate change has played a big part in this, as people are quite rightly increasingly concerned with where their products come from and how they directly impact the environment. Manufacturers have had to rethink and adapt their product offerings or services to meet this shift; boiling water taps are no different. In addition to the hot, cold and boiling water functions, manufacturers are turning their attention to new water modes. Offering filtered, chilled and sparkling water from the same tap at the touch of a button is one of the ways in which Quooker is tackling the issue of sustainability through product development. The new and improved Quooker CUBE was launched last year to provide a lighter, more compact and easier-to-install alternative to our successful CUBE accessory, initially released in 2019. The new CUBE boasts an improved water flow for the chilled water mode and two different effervescence levels, so users can pick their preferred level of fizz in their drinks. This improvement was crucial to provide a more long-term sustainable alternative to single-use plastic bottles. Considering that the average UK household uses a staggering 360 single-use plastic bottles per year, taps that can deliver filtered, sparkling and chilled water will help to reduce this figure dramatically. Authentic Cuisine

Ulster Tatler’s Joanne Harkness visits Bites of India, Botanic. My partner and I love Indian food; it will often be our goto takeaway at weekends as a treat. However sometimes the real treat is getting to dine in the restaurant to get the full experience. We were delighted to try the new kid on the block in Botanic – Bites of India. This branch opened in summer 2022 in addition to their sister restaurant on Ravenhill Road. We booked into the restaurant

mid-week as something to look forward to after work and we were captivated by the buzz of Botanic – who knew a Wednesday evening in Belfast would be so alive? This thriving energy continued into Bites of India, where there were tables of friends having dinner after work, families out for a meal and couples enjoying a date night. The restaurant has a fresh and vibrant feel as soon

as you walk in and the staff were quick to show us to our table, which was a cosy table for two tucked away in the corner. I always fall into the routine of ordering the same thing when I go to Indian restaurants; the classics such as onion bhaji, pakora, tikka masala and korma – so I was determined to try something different this time. I am one of those people who can’t wait to see the menu in person; I will look up the menu online before I go – the curiosity always gets the better of me. Luckily, the menu was on the Bites of India website, so I had a peruse of all the options… my mouth was watering from just reading the descriptions! I spotted a starter dish that I hadn’t tried before, Pani Poori, which was described as; crispy, hollow fired dough balls stuffed with potatoes, chickpeas, served with a spicy water and sweet chutney. When this dish arrived it certainly looked different, with all the elements separated on the plate. Our waitress showed me exactly how to eat it, which was to spoon the sweet chutney into the dough balls first, followed by putting in the chickpea and potato stuffing and topping it off with a drizzle of the spicy water… then it was down the hatch in one! It was an explosion of flavour

with a mixture of sweetness and spice bursting through. I liked the combination of textures, from the crisp shell, to the soft potato filling – I would definitely try this starter again. My fiancé went for the safer option of Afghani tikka chicken, which looked equally delicious. My partner and I decided to mix and match our main course, so we ordered a chicken Rogan Josh and Kabuli chicken to share. Both dishes were beautifully flavoured with rich, creamy sauces making them perfect for dipping the garlic naan into. I spotted another guest at the restaurant eating a Dosa, which is a southern Indian pancake-like dish. It looked really appetising and, again like nothing I had seen before at other Indian restaurants, so I can’t wait to return to try it. After our faultless experience, we definitely will be returning again. Surprisingly they open for breakfast, serving traditional Indian breakfast dishes. This would certainly be something different to try and I love nothing more than going out for a breakfast date, followed by a bit of shopping in the city centre. A Cottage of Dreams Ulster Tatler’s Joanne Harkness visits Keenaghan Cottage in Belleek. We are so fortunate to live on such a beautiful island, with stunning coastlines, lakes and gorgeous green scenery – so beautiful in fact that it draws tourists from all over the world to our wee isle. No plane journeys are required, we can just hop in our cars to explore the best that this country has to offer. An authentic Irish staycation can be encapsulated perfectly at Keenaghan Cottage, the award-winning 5* luxury accommodation located in Belleek, Co. Fermanagh. My fiancé and I were lucky to get a trip to stay at Keenaghan Cottage, which is already booking out for 2023. After our experience, I can see why the demand is so high for this charming abode. We took a leisurely drive down on a Sunday lunchtime, to arrive for checkin at three o’clock. I always enjoy the drive through Co. Fermanagh as it is so picturesque – and although the cottage is located in a peaceful and secluded area, it was very easy to find. As we parked up in the pebble driveway, I was completely in awe of how magical the thatched cottage looked. It was like something out of an old Irish painting or something you could only dream about – I couldn’t wait to explore every detail. My awe-struck reaction continued as we entered the cottage. When people describe something as being a Tardis, it definitely applies to this cottage; I couldn’t believe how spacious it was. There was a kitchen, two generous-sized bedrooms with ensuites (one even had a dressing room area) and a living/ dining area. The attention to detail was what made this self-catering accomodation stand out from the rest. There was a lovely hamper of treats in the kitchen, along with a welcome sign for myself and my partner; there were also hints of Easter decorations around the house such as bunting along the fireplace and a themed wreath on the traditional half-door.

Not to mention the endless finer details and facilities that we kept discovering during our stay: the bikes and wellies in the shed, the cosy dressing gowns in the dressing room and extra toiletries. I forgot to bring makeup remover and you can imagine my delight when I found the exact brand of micellar water that I use in the bathroom cupboard! After settling in, we decided to explore the garden and surrounding area. We were there at a time when winter was transforming into spring and it was a lovely bright, yet crisp day. Peeping up in the garden were flowers such as snowdrops and daffodils and the lake in front of the authentic 1800s cottage was sparkling in the sun. The only sounds that filled the air were the sounds of the countryside; it felt like we had been transported to another place and moment in time. As the evening approached we retreated back into the cosy cottage to make our dinner in the well-equipped kitchen. Although we were only staying for one night, it already felt like this house was our home. We were relishing every moment in the cottage, but there are also plenty of diningout options in the nearby area such as Lusty Beg and The Harbour Bistro at Rossharbour. There are also plenty of things to see and do in the area including a trip to Belleek Pottery, Florencecourt House, Castle Caldwell, water activities on the lakes, shopping in Enniskillen town or a visit to the Marble Arch Caves. When the next morning arrived, we felt a sense of saddness having to leave this haven. We made a breakfast of dippy eggs and soldiers with the items that had been provided in the welcome hamper, followed by a brisk early-morning walk by the lake one last time – I personally can’t think of a better start to the day! As we prepared to leave, we wrote our words of thanks in the visitors book. I found

it fascinating seeing the variety of visitors that have stepped through the doors. There were visitors from as far as Australia, Canada and USA, as well as locals from Donegal, Belfast and mainland UK. The messages all echoed the same sentiment with phrases such as ‘a little bit of heaven’, ‘straight out of a fairytale’ and ‘an absolute dream’ being used to describe Keenaghan Cottage. I wrote that I couldn’t wait to tell my friends and family all about it, which is testament to what a great experience we had – I was excited to recommend it to others and knew that they would love it just as much as I did. ‘The Hill’ is alive with the tales of Ulster’s History Explore a special place at the very heart of Ulster’s history. Here you’ll uncover extraordinary stories that shaped the history of Ireland. Stories of The O’Neill, who was head of one of Ireland’s most powerful dynasties. Stories that stay with you. Ready to find out more? THEN STEP INSIDE Visitors will begin their journey in Ranfurly House, just beneath The Hill, where a fascinating interactive exhibition ushers you into the world of the O’Neill dynasty. The centrepiece of your visit to the Hill of The O’Neill is the permanent exhibition in Ranfurly House. This tells the story of the Flight of The Earls and the Plantation of Ulster, and the important role that Dungannon played in these two historical events that would forever change these islands. This moment marked the transition from the old Gaelic world into the modern Ireland of today. As you stroll through the exhibition you’ll see portraits of the key players, maps, costumes and archive accounts of their many battles. You’ll also get an insight into their daily lives, with inventories of the riches of the chieftains, their vast lands and finery. And you’ll hear the sad tale of Hugh O’Neill’s youngest child, Conn. Left behind in the hurried confusion of the Flight of the Earls. This is just one of the eye-opening tales your guide will share with you as you move through the tour. Then take the short walk to the top of The Hill and enjoy stunning views across seven Ulster counties from our glass viewing tower. This experience will make it clear why this was chosen as the seat of Gaelic Ireland for over 300 years – later and in turn by Sir Arthur Chichester as the Plantation capital of Ulster following the Flight of The Earls in 1607.

ARTS DIARY

“It’s just incredible to look back at the journey we’ve come on during that time, both as a country and as a city.” EDITED BY KELLIE BURCH KELLIE@ULSTERTATLER.COM

Belfast Children’s Festival Launch Young at Art’s Belfast Children’s Festival turns 25 this year. And they are celebrating with a 10-day programme of activities that range from theatre, dance, music, art and interactive events. At the recent programme launch, which took place at the Lyric Theatre, guests including media personality Denise Watson; composer and musician Neil Martin; and pupils from St Matthew’s Nursery School, were welcomed with bespoke cupcakes and party bags before finding out more about what’s on offer. The opening speech from Jimmy Fay, executive producer at the Lyric Theatre, gave a taster of what attendees could expect from this year’s line up. Guests also heard from the Young at Art Collective - a group of young people whose feedback on the arts shaped the Belfast Children’s Festival programme. Other speakers included Lord Mayor of Belfast, Cllr. Christina Black; Cameron Menzies, artistic director of NI Opera; Gilly Campbell, director of arts development, Arts Council NI; and Brian Mullan, CEO of Replay Theatre Company. Speaking at the launch, Eibhlín de Barra, Director of Young at Art, said: “2023 is not just the 25th anniversary of Young at Art’s Belfast Children’s Festival, it’s also the 25th anniversary of the Good Friday Agreement. It’s just incredible to look back at the journey we’ve come on during that time, both as a country and as a city. Belfast is now a vibrant, creative, cultural destination and we’re very proud of the role that we, the creative sector, have played in promoting a positive image of Belfast around the world.” To conclude the programme launch, guests were treated to a performance from Northern Ireland Opera’s ‘Nobody, Somebody’ which explores the pressing issues of housing stress and homelessness some young people face everyday. There was also, as a world exclusive, first look at Replay Theatre Company’s ‘Mirrorball’. Based on the real-life experiences of Matt Cavan, guests were treated to a stunning performance from Matt as his drag persona, Cherrie Ontop, kitted out in the most glorious rainbow gown. Other highlights from this year’s festival include Aakash Odedra Company and The Spark Arts for Children’s ‘Little Murmur’; Replay Theatre Company’s ’Prism’; festival favourite ‘Baby Rave’; and the ‘Big Belfast Birthday Bash’ - a free event for all the family which will take over Belfast City Hall and the Cathedral Quarter on 11 March. The Belfast Children’s Festival runs 3-12 March. The programme launch took place on 26 January.

to taking their own lives was a stark parallel to the Northern Ireland of today where suicide statistics are alarmingly high. So, in addition to paying homage to a timeless Shakespearean production, Crawford also created a space to draw awareness to a real epidemic in our country. And what makes this message all the more powerful was his dedication to raising awareness in the right way by consulting with charities and also providing school workshops and support materials for audiences to reiterate the message: to wait before taking irrevocable and drastic action. Whilst this play - adapted by Anne Bailey - is shorter than the original, and enjoys some creative changes to character and script, it very much retains the poignancy of Shakespeare’s original. Although very familiar with the material, I found the ending to be still deeply affecting and packing an emotional punch. The crowd, which included Roisin

The most famous tale of a pair of starcrossed lovers enjoyed a modern retelling on the stage of the Lyric Theatre recently. And, with instructions to attend the press night in a black and white dress code, I was eager to see how this would compare to previous productions I have watched. This incarnation of Romeo and Juliet, a classic piece of theatre which explores love, hate, loyalty and conflict, was directed by Philip Crawford. Rich with Northern Irish voices, it would have been easy for Crawford to have used the feuding families of the Montagues and Capulets as an analogy for the sectarian divide in Northern Ireland. Instead, the tensions that underpin this telling comes from the contemporary setting of rival fashion houses. A key consideration for Crawford was making the production as relatable as possible to a modern audience. Young lovers resorting

McDonough, Chief Executive of the Arts Council NI; poet Paul Muldoon; Peter Wilson (aka Duke Special); Royal Shakespeare Company’s Michael Corbidge; and artist Emma Brennan were captivated by the ‘two households, both alike in dignity, in fair Verona’. The ensemble cast gave performances of passion and gravitas whilst Romeo (played by Adam Gillian) and Juliet (played by Emma Dougan) added their own twist to their timeless characters. Although based on a classic story, this adaptation of Romeo and Juliet still manages to explore new and modern elements. With reinvention and creativity at its heart, Philip Crawford, who is also Head of Creative Learning, showcases exactly why the Lyric is renowned as a home to theatre excellence. The press night of Romeo and Juliet was 8 February. The production runs at the Lyric Theatre until 5 March.

The Joy of Science The new-look Mandela Hall, located in Queen’s University’s revamped Students’ Centre, was abuzz recently for an inperson event with Jim Al-Khalili. As part of the NI Science Festival, the New York Times best-selling author and one of the UK’s top physicists - took to the stage to discuss his latest book, The Joy of Science. The distinguished Professor of Theoretical Physics at the University of Surrey explained to the audience - including NI Science Festival Director Sarah Jones; Festival founder Dr Liz Conlon; and Ann McVeigh and Ken Bartley from ArtisAnn gallery - that the book was not only to celebrate science but to also celebrate how we do science and what the scientific method is.

Dr Reg Haslett and Gillian Graham.

As part of his talk, Jim Al-Khalili explained the last time he was in Belfast was as part of the NI Science Festival in 2020, just before the world shut down due to the pandemic. After such a strange period in our collective history, it seems that science is now more at the forefront than ever. And, over the hour-long running time of the event, the renowned physicist took the audience on a scientific journey and provided fascinating insights into how science can help make life easier to navigate - from how to handle uncertainty and doubt, to coping with the general complexities of modern living. After a scintillating conversation, event host Mark Langtry opened the floor to questions from the audience.

Ann McVeigh and Ken Bartley.

As well as questions about worm holes and the quantum mechanical effects of human consciousness, one of the younger members of the audience revealed that they had aspirations to be an astrophysicist whilst another said, “I thought the talk was really good because you got to know everything about the universe.” As Jim Al-Khalili concluded his talk, he said, “We don’t kill the magic of our world if we learn how it works.” In fact, as this thought-provoking event showed, in many ways understanding science is the thing that can add to the joy and mystery of the world we live in. Jim Al-Khalili - The Joy of Science took place on 21 February.

“We don’t kill the magic of our world if we learn how it works.” 132

Evana Bjourson Art - Portrush Evana Bjourson is an artist based in Portrush and her dynamic wave paintings take inspiration from life by the beautiful north coast of Ireland. Her illustrations frame and enhance the simple yet dramatic elements of nature. By focusing her creations on transience and fleeting moments in time, Evana’s work is characterised by a sense of energy. Light sources are often central features in her work. Furthermore, a limited palette is used to draw out predominant, dramatised colours in a scene in order to simplify and create a more whimsical image. The themes of connectivity are often portrayed in Evana’s analysis of nature and people. The artist’s work can be viewed in person at the gallery she shares with her husband, Adrian Margey, ‘Margey & Bjourson Art’ on Mark Street Portrush or on her website www.evanabjoursonart.com. THINKING OF STARTING YOUR OWN BUSINESS? Whatever the reason for entering the business world, and no matter what the level of entrepreneurial talent the individuals may have, a number of dangers exist. INITIAL CONSIDERATIONS In order to make your business a success there are a number of key factors which should be considered: • Commitment - starting a business is demanding. Determination and enthusiasm are essential. • Skills - you need managerial, financial, technical and marketing skills. If you do not have these skills personally, they can be found in a partner, employee or acquired with training. • Your product or service should have a proven or tested market, but must not conflict with the patent or legal rights of an existing business.

BUSINESS STRUCTURE There are three common types of business structure: • Sole trader: This is the simplest form of business since it can be established without legal formality. However, the sole trader is personally responsible for the liabilities of the business.

OTHER CONSIDERATIONS • Tax on profits • National insurance Contributions (NIC) • Value added tax (VAT) • Tax implications of employing staff • Raising finance • Insurance • Pensions

• Partnership: A partnership is similar in nature to a sole trader. Again the partners are personally responsible for the liabilities of the business. A further possibility is to use what is known as a Limited Liability Partnership (LLP), this can protect the partners from being personally responsible for liabilities of the partnership but there are legal regulations to comply with.

HOW WE CAN HELP Whilst some generalisation can be made about starting up a business, it is always necessary to tailor the strategy to fit your situation. Any plan must take account of your circumstances and aspirations. Whilst business success can never be guaranteed, professional advice can help to avoid some of the problems which befall new businesses.

• Company: The business affairs of the company are separate from the personal affairs of the owners, but again there are legal regulations to comply with.

We would welcome the opportunity to assist you in formulating a strategy suitable for your own requirements.

DUE TO OUR CONTINUED GROWTH, WE CURRENTLY REQUIRE CANDIDATES JOIN OUR TAX AND CORPORATE FINANCE TEAMS. PLEASE GET IN TOUCH FOR A CONFIDENTIAL CONVERSATION.

A Little Advice... Starting up your own business is an exciting venture to take on. You get to be your own boss and do something that you are truly passion about. Below are some tips if you decide to take the leap. Tip Number One: Focus on an idea or concept that you love. Starting up your own business is not an easy process. It will take a lot of time and energy. Make sure you feel that all the devotion and commitment is worthwhile. Tip Number Two: Try not to let the cost of living crisis have a negative impact on your vision. Think about how the economy will improve and the learning potential it may have upon your business – it will force you to be smart with your money and resources. The problems you overcome during this tough time will provide you with excellent skills that you can use when the economy improves.

Tip Number Four: Be aware of your competition. Your product or service needs to have at least a couple of unique selling points that will attract your customers.

Tip Number Three: Don’t over-complicate things and do too much at once. Take time to develop your idea, carry out research and plan ahead. Rome wasn’t built in a day.

Tip Number Five: Test the market. It doesn’t matter how small you start – try making a few sales to see how people respond. It will give you a feel for the market and help you gain confidence.

very parent wants what is best for their child. As soon as your child is born you will have to make important decisions about childcare, if you want (or need) to go back to work. You will have to decide who is going to care for your child and help you create a healthy work-life balance while you pursue a career. Day Nurseries are a great option as the nursery environment can help boost your child’s confidence and further their development. You also have the reassurance that your child is getting the best standard of

care on offer. A day nursery gives your child the space to grow and thrive and is a reliable form of childcare, available for children from birth up to five years of age. While being a working parent, a day nursery offers safe and structured surroundings to give your child the opportunity to learn new skills and help them become ‘school ready’. They offer great flexibility and usually open from 8am-6pm, catering for parents who work both full-time and part-time hours. All day nurseries will have staff who are trained to care and tend to the needs of each child so you can be assured your child

is being well looked after whilst you are at work. Most nurseries will give you updates throughout the day on what your child has been doing so you are always kept in the loop. During their time at a day nursery your child will learn, play, socialise with other children, eat and rest. There are a range of activities on offer including: arts and crafts, games, singing, dancing and listening to stories. Whilst doing these activities they can develop social and communication skills with other children, learning how to share, listen to others and form friendships.

Marital Law

Marital breakdown is one of the most stressful events in any person’s life. There are good reasons for seeking legal advice from a solicitor early who will take much of the worry out of it. If you are concerned that you will not have enough money to manage, a solicitor can help you to secure maintenance for yourself and your children so that the bills are met. Advice can also be given in order to best protect your business and other assets including your pension. There may be tax implications for some properties if steps are not taken within the first year of separation. Seeking advice early ensures that you are not disadvantaged. It is a misconception that going to a lawyer will result in court proceedings. Most matrimonial finances are resolved amicably by way of matrimonial agreement. However, if court proceedings become necessary, your solicitor will represent you and advocate on your behalf in court. For many couples, ensuring the least upset to the children is the priority. In cases involving children, the law states that the welfare of the children must be the paramount consideration. Emphasis will always be given to reaching an arrangement, which works in the best interest of the children whether that is achieved outside or inside the court arena. *Editorial supplied by Millar McCall Wylie.

PROVIDING LEGAL EXPERTISE FOR OVER 50 YEARS 10 STEP GUIDE TO BUYING OR SELLING YOUR HOME If you are considering buying or selling your home this guide provides information on matters to consider whilst hopefully at the same time reducing the stress involved. 1. CONTACT YOUR SOLICITOR

Your first call when selling your home should always be to your solicitor. Quite often solicitors are not instructed until a buyer has been found and a completion date has been agreed. Contacting your solicitor early facilitates Title Deeds being sought from your Lending Institution, the sale contract being drafted, and property certificates and searches can be requested. If any extensions or works have been undertaken to your home, ensure that the planning permission and building control documents are furnished to your solicitor. Your solicitor will also explain how the conveyancing process works and what steps are involved to reach completion date.

2. APPOINT AN ESTATE AGENT

You may put your house on the market, but the estate agent is the one who actually sells it. Ask family, friends and neighbours - it’s always good to have a personal recommendation. In today’s technological world most estate agents provide full marketing portals, in addition to the printed sale brochure, such as website listings, videos and social media outlets such as Facebook and Twitter as a means of selling your home.

3. PREPARE YOUR HOME FOR VIEWINGS

Estate agents generally advise of the importance of keeping your home neat and tidy (this can prove a hard task where children are involved). It may also involve a coat of paint, tidy up of the garden, re-arrangement of furniture and declutter before any viewings. It is also the ideal opportunity to undertake a spring clean and donate unwanted items to charity.

Therese Johnston Managing Partner

can be obtained relatively cheaply by your estate agent and the details included in the sale brochure and listings.

contracts prepared by the solicitors are signed by all parties.

5. ARRANGING A MORTGAGE FOR YOUR PURCHASE

As a rule, the conveyancing process takes an average of six to eight weeks from the date of an agreed sale by the estate agent. Sometimes there will be a chain of sales and purchases and it is important that everyone knows what date they are all working towards.

Investigate the availability of a further mortgage offer for any potential purchase with your mortgage advisor/ mortgage lender. This ensures that you are aware of what mortgage offers are available, have a mortgage in principle agreed to facilitate negotiations and are fully aware of your maximum available funding.

6. SEEK YOUR OWN SURVEY

Although mortgage lenders undertake a property survey for the purposes of the mortgage offer, it is advisable that every purchaser arranges for their own home buyer’s survey. A survey will identify any issues or problems with the property before entering into a binding contract.

7. HAVE YOU DONE YOUR MATH?

There is nothing more overwhelming than the realisation you do not have sufficient funds to discharge all associated costs and outlays. Ascertain at an early stage the redemption figure and any penalties relating to your current mortgage. Your solicitor will have provided a detailed written breakdown of all costs associated with your purchase and sale including the Stamp Duty Land Tax payable on your purchase. Ensure that you include the costs for your estate agent, survey, removal company, redirection of mail, utility bills owing and house insurance costs.

9. AGREE A COMPLETION DATE

10. FINAL CHECKS FOR COMPLETION

The contract of sale will require you to vacate your home by 12 noon on completion date. Therefore, ensure ample time is set aside to pack up your belongings and your removal company is booked well in advance. Provide meter readings to utility service providers such as electricity and gas to ensure you are no longer responsible for these services from completion date. Also make sure that Land and Property Services are informed and any refund of rates claimed. Having successfully moved all that’s left is to unpack and settle into HOME SWEET HOME!!

4. OBTAIN AN ENERGY PERFORMANCE CERTIFICATE

8. EXCHANGE OF CONTRACTS

All properties being sold must have an Energy Performance Certificate. These certificates

Although you may have agreed the sale of your home and the purchase of your new home, there is nothing legally binding until the
