With September upon us, the leaves are beginning to turn golden; crisp, blue mornings are becoming more frequent; and shorter evenings mean we need to wrap up warm. It’s also time to focus our minds on the challenges of a new academic year. The global pandemic has created much uncertainty, but we are proud to remember that the University of East London has been pioneering futures since 1892. Through two world wars, social revolutions and a great many upheavals, our long history shows we have a spirit of resilience. As we embrace the challenges and opportunities of a post-Covid-19 world, we can be confident we are ready to move forward into the fourth industrial age. As we adapt to the ‘new normal’, keeping our community safe is our top priority. We continue to be robust and innovative in implementing the necessary steps to ensure we deliver this successfully. In addition to the information featured in this guide, please ensure you study our Covid-secure campus guidelines ahead of the new year.

GETTING STARTED GETTING

ACCEPTANCE In order to study at our University, you must complete the acceptance stage of your journey. This means you must not only have accepted the offer we made to you for admission, but you must also have met all our entry criteria. This includes tasks such as the completion of qualification checks with our Admissions Team. Until this step is resolved, you will not be invited to complete enrolment and become a full student of the University of East London. Furthermore, you will not be given access to your University IT account (including Track My Future). If you have any questions about acceptance, visit the ‘accepting’ area on our website for FAQs, advice and guidance.

ENROLMENT AND WHY THIS PROCESS IS IMPORTANT You cannot study a degree programme at our University without first completing our enrolment process. This is the means by which you sign up to the terms and conditions for your course of study and officially become a student of the University of East London. This step must be undertaken before you will be granted full access to our campuses, online systems and your course. To complete enrolment, follow these steps:

1.

Once you complete our acceptance stage (see above), you will be emailed a request to authenticate the password for your University IT account.

2.

Once you authenticate your password, you will gain access to the UEL online gateway with the ability to enrol. You will be directed to the Track My Future Pre-enrolment Page (more information about Track My Future is provided on page 5).

3.

Click on the 'how to enrol online' tile within Track My Future. This will take you to an area with information and video guidance on how to complete the formal process.

4.

As a back-up, an initiation to enrol online will also be sent to your University email account. Advice on accessing your email can be found on our website.

If you need support during this process, there are enrolment guidance videos available within Track My Future. Remember Step 1, above, needs to be completed before Track My Future becomes available. You also have the option of gaining virtual support for any stage of your enrolment requirements via call back, appointments, live chat and FAQs.

PREPARING FOR THE NEW ACADEMIC YEAR

COURSE INDUCTIONS

Once your enrolment is complete, you should begin preparing for the new academic year. We have created a bespoke online area within Track My Future to help you prepare. Whether you are new or returning for a new academic year, you should access Preparation, Orientation and Induction to explore the following three areas:

Your academic course begins at induction. This is the time we dedicate to informing you about how things work. It’s when course handbooks, online learning materials, module structures and assessments are explained. It’s the time when your tutors outline essential instructions and expectations for using Moodle, Teams, on-campus tutorials and your academic society.

Step 1: Preparing

Relationships shape your student journey, and a new academic year is like a fresh start. So induction is perfect for introductions. Use induction to say hello and make connections with the people who will be key to your learning, including those who will share your classes and your tutors. An important relationship during your academic journey will be with your academic advisor. You will also meet them during induction.

This section contains must-read information about our new dual delivery model of teaching in response to Covid-19. Advice about what IT equipment you should buy, our Dual Delivery Bursary and information about travelling to campus is provided. Plus, you will also find a link to apply for student accommodation.

Step 2: Orientation

There are six areas to explore in this section. If you truly want to be prepared and ready to live your best student life, these areas are a must. From IT Induction to opportunities for growth, these pages and videos introduce key opportunities and support for your success.

Step 3: Course Induction

Here you will find scheduling details for course inductions. Learn about your course structure, what is expected of you, and how academic societies enrich student life beyond the classroom.

Those on courses with specialist spaces, such as labs, performance spaces, or workshops, will be shown how to use them safely. Course inductions take place during Welcome Week, which operates differently to our normal teaching weeks. The University follows a different timetable as we ease you into the new academic year. We keep things simple at the start by emailing you a personalised induction timetable. Welcome Week runs from Monday 21 to Friday 25 September. While you won’t be on campus all week, you will be invited to attend some oncampus sessions as well as engaging with our online materials.

While lots will be explained during your induction sessions in Welcome Week, if you’re someone who likes to read ahead and learn independently, you can visit Track My Future and use the drop-down menu to navigate to Preparation, Orientation and Induction.

UAL DELIVERY EDUCATIO UAL DELIVERY EDUCATIO UAL DELIVERY EDUCATIO

HOW YOUR COURSE WILL BE TAUGHT: DUAL DELIVERY EDUCATION We have developed the Careers-1st dual delivery educational model to facilitate access to your learning cohort online and on-campus. The University has applied Covid-Secure guidelines to all its campuses and has put in place a high-quality virtual learning environment and a new online portal to access all University services (Track My Future). This enables students to receive the benefits of on-campus learning (eg specialist equipment and labs; practical and performance experiences) and online learning (eg peer engagement and feedback; ability to review recorded and curated teaching material). The UK government’s Covid-19 restrictions means that all on-campus capacity in the UK is reduced. To ensure the safety of students, teaching on-campus will be delivered to a timetable of a maximum of two days per week per course/ cohort. Six hours of on-campus timetabled events per week will be scheduled. Overall teaching and learning contact time will remain the same as pre-Covid although the balance between virtual and physical has been adapted. These six hours on-campus may include performance/practical opportunities, access to specialist equipment/labs and/or professional body vocational requirements. On-campus timetabled events will be live-streamed and recorded and will be accessible via your Virtual Learning Environment along with the rest of the formal contact hours which will be delivered as outlined in the module/course specification. As such, if you are not directed to campus; if you have specific reasons to limit access to campus (eg health or visa restrictions); or if the University has entered a campus-based or region-based Covid-19 lockdown, you will still be able to progress in your studies through your online access. All students are asked to attend both on-campus and online timetabled events – as appropriate. This gives students the opportunity to gain the greatest value from their course. It’s also important to note that without on-campus engagement, there may be some delays in progression/completion for some Professional, Statutory and Regulatory Bodies (PSRB)-accredited courses. The University’s aim is to provide all students with the best Careers1st, academic experience possible. As such the dual delivery educational model has been developed for the 2020/21 academic year and beyond. This provides the necessary academic standards and support for students to succeed for an industry 4.0 economy. To ensure you realise your potential, it is important for students to understand the commitment and engagement necessary in both online and on-campus learning modes.

Our Residential Life team has worked tirelessly to develop and adapt to government advice over the past six months and they will be on hand to support anyone needing to quarantine on arrival or self-isolate throughout the academic year.

Our Residential Life team has prepared an exciting programme of events to help you settle in. This includes: movie night, quiz night and live cook-along sessions. Our programmes will include online activities, so you can begin to meet people before you’ve even arrived or, if you need to quarantine, on arrival. We want to help everyone to take part and make new friends across our campus community, so the events will continue throughout the academic year (adapting in line with the latest Government guidelines).

Staying Alert, Controlling the Virus, Saving Lives To keep everyone safe, we will continually review our processes and policies. A team of students and staff will review our approach monthly to make sure we are offering the best and safest experience. These changes will be published on the Residential Life Intranet pages and in our bi-weekly newsletter #LivingYourBestResLife. We also have support in place to make sure our residents still get the best experience at the University of East London. Our Residential Life staff are available on the phone, and via email seven days a week. Our security team are available 24/7. Our Residential Life scholars are full-time students living on campus. They will be on hand to offer any advice and guidance you need, and they’ll also be conducting virtual flat welcome sessions across all our accommodation.
