ACTING CHAIRMAN’S REPORT In these unusual and uncertain times, the branch committee has had to make decisions on finding new dates for the events on our branch calendar. (There just isn’t enough weekends in October/ November!) The organizers of these events have had to make changes to the formats (as well as the dates) not an easy task. Please support Colin Hey’s Veteran Annual Rally (transferred to 10 October) Linda White in her Women and Young Drivers Rally which has been transferred to Saturday 16 October (entries close 8 October) and the Awards Dinner now 7 November. Graham Evan’s Vintage Annual Rally is also coming up on 6 November. Our Swap Meet is now 26/27/28 November – more than enough time to offer your services to Colin (Swap Meet Chairman.) It was great to be able to get together at the OCBC last month under COVID-19 Level 2 guidelines. A good turn out on a lovely day. I think we were all pleased to be out and about in our vehicles again. A reminder to check the branch website for any change to our events. Your branch committee met by zoom for their last monthly meeting – a bit different, but it was necessary to touch base. We look forward to meeting you all again in person. There is still time to buy your tickets ($35 single from branch committee members) to attend the 2021 Awards Dinner – always a perfect time to support your fellow members at the presentation of their awards, as well as enjoying a delicious meal in the company of like-minded people. Leigh

SECRETARY’S REPORT Member subscriptions are due this month, so if you have provided an email address your invoice will be sent by this method in the next week or two, if National Office doesn’t have an email listing in their data base that relates to you then your invoice will slowly come by post. If not paid on time you will receive ONE reminder from National Office that you have not paid. Please give this your urgent attention during October /November as with our branch bordering on 1300 members every year I end up with a 100 to 200 unfinancial members which seem to carry though to next year and hangs around my neck (desk) for months. This year I may not be contacting you to remind you that you are about to lose your continuity of membership, you will just drop off the data base, it is up to you. In a club of say 100 this would not be an issue, but for us it is huge. Most of the committee have spent a lot of hours this month trying to contact those members who do not have email, 178 to be precise, and the number of people who no longer have a land line is enormous too. If you are one of these people would you give your urgent attention to updating National Office that this number is no longer active and provide your cell phone number or email if you have one admin@vcc.org.nz Quote your Surname and membership number IMPORTANT or let me know at canterbury@vcc.org.nz. Well on that note we move on and hopefully will move out of level two before the end of October. As you will already know we have postponed the Swap Meet for October and have pencilled in the last weekend in November 26/27/28 , not an easy task with all Branches trying to find new dates and you certainly can’t please everybody but we do try. Hopefully happy motoring or for some fossicking at swap meet, see you there if you are immunised, if not “REALLY” well I never. Rod 7

CLUB CAPTAIN’S REPORT Well a bit of a quiet month with having lockdown, but with much stuff going on behind the scenes to reorganise events. New dates have been sorted for the Lady and Young Drivers day on the 16th October 2021, the Awards dinner being the 7th November 2021 and the Swap Meet at the of November.

Show Weekend we have our facilities used by the Kustom Rodders. We need to provide a bar service for this event and require volunteers for the Friday and Saturday evenings. Please let Gill Stevenson know if you are available to assist. This would be greatly appreciated. Happy Motoring in this spring-like weather! Katryna

BRANCH AWARDS DINNER 7th November Clubrooms, Cutler Park. Bar opens 6.00 pm Please be seated for dinner by 6.30 pm

Tickets ($35 single) will be available from branch committee members. If there are any special dietary requirements, contact Leigh 342 9110 or craythornes@actrix.co.nz as soon as possible please.

See Branch Website for any changes

VINTAGE CONVENOR’S REPORT I am concerned that to date we only have seven entries for the Annual Vintage Rally being held on 6 November. We have over 400 members in the Canterbury membership with vehicles fitting the Vintage category of 1919 – 1931, please consider entering this annual event. There is the same effort involved in organising an event for 7 cars as is it is for 70 cars, so spring into gear and shake off the COVID blues and click on and complete the entry form in this Hub. Graham Annual Vintage Rally November 6, 2021 10.30am start at Club Members Roy and Shirley Grainger’s residence 94 Sabys Road, Halswell. (Allow time to view car collection before starting). Lunch Stop at a lovely country Domain west of start. (Toilets and shelter available if weather inclement). After Lunch a short drive to view a small Museum with an interesting large range of eclectic items on display. Drive to the finish at NZ Vintage Machinery Clubs grounds McLean’s Island Road. (Large Display Building housing various Machinery items from the past and a Ladies Memorabilia room to view. Also view a new building housing MV Tuhoe salvaged items and a collection of rare engines). (Toilets and shelter available). Afternoon Tea will be provided at this venue followed by Prize giving and Trophy presentation to lucky winners. Estimated rally distance approximate 60 miles. Field tests will be undertaken during the Rally. Get your entry in now. Any queries contact Rally organisers. Graham Evans 3515919, Mark Drury 3429297, Lyndsey Saunders 3228565. COMMERCIAL REPORT Thanks to Dave Cooper for hosting the September commercial noggin at his place, good to get out for a catch up after a few weeks at home, Plans not confirmed for October yet, so when something is worked out I'll be in touch, so if you haven't heard from me before Wednesday 20th October give me a call. Neil The Branch Fire Engine Work has been proceeding well. Mark Drury reports that he and Roy Adams drove it around Cutler Park last weekend. Another step on the way.

Daffodil Rally – The Rally That Wasn’t Our National body has offered an alternative date for this event of 31st October, however we (the branch committee) have elected not to try and run it again given that we have now had two fund-raising efforts including the alternative OCBC event in place of the Rally. Our Branch contribution has closed out at $1,644, made up of the money collected at OCBC ($778.00) with the rest being private donations through the VCC Daffodil Day appeal page. Thank you every one who donated – it has made a difference! The good news of course is that we have the plans and route instructions on file for the 2022 event, which I am sure will come around again quicker than expected. Colin 10

VETERAN REPORT NEW DATE FOR ANNUAL VETERAN RALLY Now Sunday 10th October The Branch Annual Veteran Rally was due to be held on Sunday 26th September, but due to the cold and wet weather on the day, it was decided to postpone it to Sunday 10 th October. Because this was going to be Swap Meet Sunday, the date is now free and will hopefully suit everyone. We have 16 confirmed registrations, but there is room for many more and we'd love to see you there. The finish destination is the Racecourse Hill homestead, 6km west of Darfield on SH73. The homestead has undergone extensive repairs and renovations following the Canterbury earthquakes, and more recently the gardens and grounds have been the focus of attention and are now showing their springtime splendour. Because of extra requirements at the Darfield recreation centre due to COVID restrictions, we have decided to move the start location to the home of Malcolm and Anita McGibbon, 1561 Telegraph Road, Darfield. They are about halfway between Charing Cross and Darfield - there will be a sign at their gate, and there is plenty of room for trailers if needed. Please arrive between 9.30 and 10.00am. Morning tea will be provided, and the runs will begin at 10.00am. There will be a longer run (40km) and a shorter run (20km) to Racecourse Hill. All flat running and on sealed roads. There is going to be a public open day at the Homestead provided we are back to Level 1 restrictions, so our vehicles will be featured along with the homestead and its wonderful garden and surroundings. They will be parked on the driveway in front of the Homestead, and some fun field tests will be held after lunch. If we are still at Level 2 we will have the Homestead and grounds to ourselves. Entry forms for the Rally were in the September Hub on Page 35 and of course are on-line. If you haven't already entered please enter on-line by Wednesday 6th October if you can, or call or email me before Friday 8th and let me know you're intending to come. We can sort out the registration at the start on Sunday morning if necessary. If your veteran isn't currently going, all other club eligible 11

vehicles are welcome too, but just won’t be eligible for any of the awards. The event is as much about our veteran vehicle owners as it is about the vehicles. Please feel free to bring family or friends with you too. Other Veteran News It was a special treat to see Brian Newberry appear in his newly restored 1914 Chevrolet Roadster at the September OCBC. He came in via the back route around the clubrooms, so not many saw him arrive. Fresh from the vic and vin process, it is yet another outstanding restoration from Brian’s workshop and was admired by many at OCBC. Apparently he’s already starting on another project, but great to see this one out and about. Well done Brian! Also great to see so many veteran cars at last month’s OCBC – it coincided with the opening run for the season for the Veteran Club so was the ideal stop-off point after a long run using only left-hand turns. And finally, did you know that there is a facebook page for veteran owners in NZ? Go to your facebook page and search under Veteran Car Club of New Zealand. There’s lots of good stuff on it.

Regards Colin Hey (Veteran Convenor)

OCBC (Old Cars, Bikes & Coffee) REPORT The September OCBC was to be held on Sunday 19th September, and was planned to be our last opportunity for a fundraising event for the Cancer Society given that we were not able to run the Daffodil Rally this year. The original plan was to make it an informal Show'n’Shine event, however this proved impossible because under Covid Level 2 restrictions we were not allowed more than 100 people in a group at an outdoor event. Some creative thinking about reorganising the display areas and managing the group sizes got around this problem so we could still run OCBC, and we were also able to collect donations for the Cancer Society as part of the proceedings. A total of $778 was raised on the day, so a big thanks to everyone who turned up and made the day successful. OCBC also coincided with the motorcycle section’s Reliability Trials in the club grounds, and it was also used as the finishing point for the Veteran Car Club’s Opening Run. It was great to see so much activity going on in our grounds at the one time – it makes us realise what a great facility we have, and be especially grateful for our maintenance team and the way they keep the grounds in such wonderful condition. Just a reminder too for those who have never been before - OCBC is an open event held every third Sunday morning of the month in our club grounds, and any car, motorcycle or vehicle enthusiast is welcome to attend. Vehicles can be of any age, nationality or condition - if they are loved and enjoyed they are more than welcome to be put on display. A coffee van is always in attendance, and the Spares Shed and compound is also always open. The October OCBC will be held on Sunday 17th October. It will also be the start point for the Annual All British Day, and will go ahead provided we are at Level 2 or below.

MOTORCYCLE RELIABILITY TRIAL On 19th September Canterbury branch motorcycle section ran a Reliability Trial at the club grounds. An invitation was extended by the club to the Canterbury Classic Trials group to compete in the Reliability Trial, and also put on a demonstration of classic trials bikes in action. A trials display area Writer and supplier of additional was set up using some pallets, photos Peter Barnett logs, posts, a tree stump, and tyres and gave some entertainment to those attending the Old Cars, Bikes and Coffee morning happening at the same time, but separated so each group could stay within the 100 person maximum required under the current Level 2 rules. The trials obstacles also attracted members from the Vintage Club who were on suitable motorcycles to join in the fun and them.

The reliability trial sections included tight turns, tree roots, and banks marked out with dazzle paint on the grass with pairs of cones forming gates to be ridden through. Each section was timed and the aim was to ride each course twice in the exact same time. Five seconds penalty was added each time the rider footed. In all we had 30 motorcycles competing in the event, and these represented a diverse range of machines covering the large range of years that the VCC caters for. Those taking part included 1960’s, 1970’s, and 1980’s trials bikes, 1970’s and 80’s Japanese trail bikes, 1970’s Vespa and Honda scooters, 1960's Royal Enfield and BMW motorcycles , 1937 Ariel, 1927 AJS, 1924 Triumph, as well as a Velosolex. After everyone had run through the first section a few times we all adjourned for a BBQ lunch while a second longer and tighter course was set out in the trees nearer the road. This was more challenging for the oldest machines, but some good riding skills were evident from a number of riders as they coped with the 16

tighter turns and uneven ground. A pre-war special with minimal ground clearance, a megaphone exhaust and high gearing certainly needed a bit of clutch work to get around afternoon course. Once completed it was back to base to tell a few tales while the organisers assembled the results. A laid back and fun day mixing two groups both interested in classic motorcycles. Feedback since the event has been positive, so it is hoped we can run the event again next year. Thanks to Paul and Joseph for trying something different, and the riders who took part. The certificates handed out were: Best Vintage Club Rider – Dave Cook on a 1976 Vespa 90 Rally Best Trials Rider – John Regan on a 1956 James 197 Best Lady Rider – Christine Thompson on a 1986 Fantic 250 Youngest combined age bike and rider – Alexander Bennett (5 years old) on an electric Beta trials motorcycle Oldest combined age bike and rider – Philip Jeeves on a 1924 Triumph (You will need to talk to Philip if you need to know his age!) Evil Knievel Award - Chris Stevens on a 1980 Yamaha TT250 demonstrating that fastest is not always best.

MOTORCYCLE REPORT

The sun is now in the southern hemisphere, and the spring equinox has passed. Daylight saving is upon us; looking good for a great summer of motorcycling!! Past Events 8th September – Motorcycle Noggin. This was straight after the committee meeting at 6.30 pm, so a very good turnout in The Barn. Cool night, so the blazing fire was welcoming. 19th September – Reliability Trial Event. This was held in conjunction with the OCBC coffee morning, and it turned out to be a resounding success. The Classic Trials Club of Canterbury came out as well, and they put on some display of REALLY CONTROLLED trials riding over logs, heaps of pallets etc. The reliability trial had about 30 entries, including a wee lad of 5 years old who was on an electric trials bike. Boy could he handle it too!! Two courses, two runs each, the trick was to on your second run emulate the time you took for the first… Not as easy as it sounds… 25th September – Fish & Chip Run This was supposed to be a run to the Hororata Swap Meet, but as this was postponed (Covid again!!) was just a normal event. About 5 turned up, I heard… 26th September – Working Bee @ Motorcycle Corner. A good turnout, about 8 or 10, I heard. Stacked wood, water blasted the back window, cleaned out the spouting, checked and plugged holes in the roof. Good job, well done. 19

Future Events 13th October – Motorcycle Noggin Night. Nothing out of the ordinary planned, so will be out at the Island. Usual 7.30 pm start. 16-17 October – Girder Fork Rally. Starting from usual place, Liquorland, Tower St, Hornby. 9.30 am start. Two routes, long and short. No morning tea break, straight to the lunch break at Duvauchelle Hotel. Paul Ainsworth & Mike Glenday organising. Early start, using Western Valley for long route. Stop for a coffee etc. when you want. The gathering place in Akaroa is the Grand Hotel; Eric Ryder has moved on so a chance to meet the new publican. Entry form in The Hub September or On-Line. Nonqualifying bikes welcome, however as the lunch at Duvauchelle Hotel is prepaid you MUST enter to get a lunch. Usual run back to Tai Tapu Pub for lunch & prize giving on Sunday. Get your accommodation sorted; there is supposed to be some French Festival in town that weekend. 23rd October - Fish & Chip Run – this is Labour Weekend. From this month onwards the place to meet and depart from will be changed to outside PMH Hospital on Cashmere Road. As usual, meet at 10.15 am for a 10.30 am departure. That is about it for this month; sad to say that Covid-19 has made a good job of stuffing things up. Cheers, CML

The Two Peters (May and Lee) keeping up the good work for the Motorcycle Section

SWAP MEET REPORT - The Back-up Plan NEW DATES: Friday 26th to Sunday 28th November Well, no surprises here!! Because of the COVID restrictions, we’ve now had to switch to the pre-arranged back-up plan to ensure we do indeed proceed with Swap Meet this year. Moving it out 6 weeks to the last weekend in November gives us the opportunity to reorganise the critical things, like toilets, food vendors, advertising and rosters for the new dates. There are still a few sites available for booking, but get in quick and contact Neil Shaskey if you want one. If you have a site booked (selling, camping or both) and you can’t make the new dates, then please let Neil Shaskey (sites) or Andrea Dallow (camping) know, so the sites can be reallocated. At noggin this month we will have the small signs available for collection (with the revised dates on them) – if you can take one or more and put them up somewhere in your neighbourhood, it would be a great help. For those who have already put signs up, there are stickers available to put the revised dates on them, so please collect those at noggin too. Whilst at Noggin, please check the roster sheets. If your name is already there, please check that your allocated time is still OK, and if it’s not please change your time, or see or call me if you have to change your plans. If your name is not there, please find a job you would like to do and a time that suits you and add your name. There is nothing arduous or difficult to do, all we require is an hour or so of your time over the whole weekend. At the October and November Noggins we will have weekend passes available to purchase. Remember that entry is $5 per day, or you can buy a three-day/ weekend pass (wrist-band) for $10 and just show it at the gate as you come through.

Back-up Plan No.2 Because there is still that annoying uncertainty of Covid restrictions, we have devised a back-up plan no. 2 to ensure we do indeed have a Swap Meet this year. The dates will be advised if or when we need to use them – suffice to say it will not be until well into the new year. The key message is that there will be a Swap Meet, so keep sorting your stuff out, and start looking forward to catching up with your mates from out of town again. Colin Hey Chairman Swap Meet Committee. 21

SUNDAY 24 OCTOBER 2021 The Grasskhana is being set up to take place on Sunday October 24th (Labour Weekend) at the branch grounds, Cutler Park. The event will take place in the grass area by the power cables, parallel with our boundary with Steam Scene and is open to entries for any club eligible vehicles. Four different courses will be set up and hopefully, each entrant will have the opportunity of testing their skills on each one twice, with their best times being used in the compilation of the final results. This occasion is a great opportunity for some of our younger members to demonstrate their driving abilities and have a fun day out in their, or the family’s vehicle. For the spectators, the event can be really entertaining. The mistreating of vehicles will be discouraged, but nevertheless competition is expected to be fierce. Vehicles need to be in a safe condition and importantly, the battery must be firmly secured. Start time 10.00 am BYO picnic lunch Contact Paul Ainsworth 027 432 1391 for any enquiries

2021 ALL BRITISH DAY Sunday 17th October

The 2021 Canterbury All British Day will be held on Sunday 17th October. The start point will be the coffee morning at our Vintage Car Club grounds on McLeans Island Road, where vehicles will need to assemble between 8.30am and 10.00 am. At 10.00 all British vehicles will depart on a scenic run which will take participants to the Amberley Rock’n’wheels event in the Amberley domain. Normally we would go to a venue of our own, but this year the Amberley Rock’n’wheels event has been postponed from 4th September due to COVID restrictions. This has clashed with the date reserved for the All British Day. Because the Amberley event is attended by a large number of British vehicles we will combine with that event for this year. The entry fee will still be $10.00 per vehicle which will admit the vehicle, the driver and one passenger. Any extra passengers will be $5.00. This will be collected when you arrive at Amberley Domain. All proceeds go to the Amberley Lions club. Please bring a picnic lunch, or food may be purchased at Domain. A coffee van will be operating at the VCC grounds at the start point from 8.30am. The event is open to British vehicles of all ages (veteran to modern) and all types motorcycles, cars and trucks. Please note that if the event is cancelled due to COVID restrictions or for any other reason, the All British Day run will be cancelled too. IF IT’S BRITISH AND CAN BE MADE ROADWORTHY, PLAN TO BRING IT! NO ENTRY FORM REQUIRED – JUST TURN UP ON THE DAY Organiser: Colin Hey, Phone 359-8737 or 021 882 807 Email heywolseley699@gmail.com

VOG REPORT Velosolex Owners Group

September 2021 Run Well what with COVID Levels 4 & 3 and grotty weather and the Hub deadline of the 29th I never thought you would all have the delight of reading the next adventures from the VOG group. So here we go. We were blessed with a great day on Tuesday 28th September and another successful VOG run was underway leaving this time from the Morris 8 Touring Club’s rooms on Waterloo Rd Hornby after a look around their very comprehensive spare parts department all neatly laid out on shelving sorted into various components one may need for restoring that Morrie 8 that you may have had languishing in your garage for many years. A short circuitous run was organised by Pieter Maat that took us around the Hornby area and into the new subdivision behind Masham. Goodness another massive area of new homes that you would never knew existed by just keeping to the main roads. A bit of a hair raising journey at times as we headed out onto Buchanans and then Pound Roads on our journey to the Yaldhurst for a natter and some tucker. After gnawing through our plates of roast of the day, fush’n’chups, toasties and all sorts of other “healthy” foods Pieter had us head out onto the roads again and dodging the huge 27

trucks on Yaldhurst Road, thankfully the truckies were able to see our minute machines from the height of their cabs. The journey back to start/finish line took us through the new Islington Industrial area where the Islington Freezing Works once domiciled and was a big employer of the residence in the surrounding Hornby area. Now this area contains many new warehouse and distribution stores all looking to be occupied going by the number of cars parked around the streets so a whole new type of industry and employment for Hornby and surrounds. As backup for the day I had quite an enjoyable drive with no breakdowns along the way. Such well maintained and reliable machines we ride. Thanks Pieter for organising a great day out. Royce VOG 1

Letter Our family would like to thank the committee that organises the Christmas outing at Kaiapoi each year. We really appreciate the time you put into this event. We attend with our Grandchildren but the day caters for all ages. The Main Street is closed with stalls on both sides of the street, many bargains are presented by various organisations, most with the Christmas theme. The domain has a huge variety of stalls of all sorts, including a good food area. The highlight for the children are all the various activities available. Bouncy castles catering for all ages, including the biggest and longest one we have ever seen. The huge water pool which has pedal boats the children can manipulate around. A large blow up golf game, the motorized cars that the youngsters can drive around a motor track with a parent or Grandparent on board. These all provide great entertainment at no charge. Farm animal displays of all types, with animals that can be held and fed. Pony rides, the only event with a small charge. The day finished when all the family line the Main Street to watch the Christmas parade, with its many floats and the arrival of Father Christmas. I have mentioned all the events that the family can enjoy, but for club members it is also a chance to sit in a camp chair with a glass in hand and have a chat and exchange Vintage car talk. Many thanks to the Vintage Car Club committee who provide the many treats during the day, for both the children and adults. The arrival of Father Christmas is an anticipated event, whoever is responsible for the gifts does a good job. I hope more members both young and old will join the event this year to welcome in the beginning of Christmas celebrations. Pauline Croucher See next month’s Hub for event details 29
