Summit Author Releases Second Book

Rebecca Gardyn Levington, of Summit, has a beautiful, rhyming picture book coming out in March called, Whatever Comes Tomorrow, illustrated by Mariona Cabassa (Barefoot Books). The book, which was inspired by Rebecca’s own struggle with anxiety, “reassures readers that they have the resilience and strength to face whatever comes their way.” She says that she has noticed many kids dealing with uncertainty and worries today, and hopes her book offers them hope and support. In fact, in the back of the book, readers will find exercises for managing worries. The book, which is geared toward children ages 4-9, “offers gentle wisdom applicable to both children and adults.” Rebecca is also the author of Brainstorm!, which encourages imagination and creativity, and comes with writing prompts to inspire young readers to write. Short Hills Resident Helps People with Eye Issues See Better

Tejal Rana Kamdar of Short Hills is an eyecare physician who specializes in making custom contact lenses that involve taking a mold of one’s eyeball called EyePrintPro. She says these lenses “change the lives” of people with complicated eye problems. The impression that is taken replicates all of the irregularities of the front part of the eye called the cornea. Dr. Rana creates lenses for people who suffer from conditions such as severe dry eyes, keratoconus, corneal transplants, astigmatism, post Lasik ectasia, and many other conditions. She starts by taking an impression of the eye with a special clay, which she says is much like the type of impression a dentist would take. She then sends the impressions to a lab, which creates the lenses. Dr. Rana says, “I am so grateful and fortunate to help people enhance the quality of life by providing these type of lenses that will allow them to see the world better.”

Local Kids Take Home Gold Medals at Prestigious 24th Annual American Table Tennis Teams Tournament

Ateam of three school-aged children, Oishani Mukherjee, grade four of Livingston, Vivian Guan, third grade of Millburn, and Evelyn Chen, grade eight of Whippany, recently won first place in Division 16 of the 24th annual American Table Tennis Teams Tournament, that was sponsored by Joola, and took place in Washington, D.C. There were 300 teams, with over 1,000 players, of all levels, competing in the three-day competition. The girls, who train at the Matchpoint Table Tennis Center at Whippany, played 20 matches each, which was 12 hours of play a day for three days. Oishani, who trains three times a week, says she “loves the adrenaline rush of competing and playing matches with different players and winning.” Vivian, who trains four times a week says she “had a lot of fun and enjoyed winning the matches.” Evelyn, who trains for three hours and 30 minutes a week says, “It was very hard to believe it at first, but I was very happy to win my first gold medal.”

Long Hill First Graders Participate in Reading Challenge

Stacie Holzinger’s 1st grade class at Gillette Elementary School in Long Hill has surpassed its goal of reading 1,000 books by June in the Tower of Books Reading Challenge. In January, the 6- and 7-year-olds had already read over 1,600 books. Stacie says the new goal is 2,000. “This has been a lot of fun,” says Stacie. “The kids are super thrilled with their accomplishments and are really enthusiastic about the reading challenge.” She says they are reading everything from picture books to chapter books and everything in between. Some read on their own and some read with their parents. Regardless as to their reading level, all of the students are having a blast participating in the reading challenge. Stacie says that next year, the whole grade will join in on the challenge, with a goal of reading 5,000 books by June.

Fundraiser Benefiting Experience Camps for Grieving Children to Run Through April

Experience Camps will be hosting the Day of Champions, a familyfriendly field day event at Camp Riverbend, in Warren, on June 4th. The event will be the culminating celebration to a fundraiser that the public is invited to support through April. The monies raised benefit Experience Camps, a nonprofit that transforms the lives of grieving children through summer camp programs and innovative, year-round initiatives. The day will comprise of 20 teams of 12-20 people, ages 5+ who will fundraise for the Experience Camps. Fundraising can start at any time. Jennifer Hetrick Lawrence, a Division Head at Camp Riverbend says, “I am hopeful this will become a yearly fundraiser. Berkeley Heights Education Foundation (BHEF) Grants Student’s Educational Wishes

Each year, the BHEF offers teachers and administrators the opportunity to apply for grants that support innovative programs and supplement technology and equipment in its public schools. In 2022, the BHEF kicked off a “Student GrantA-Wish” program where all district students were invited to submit a request to have their “wish” granted. One wish was selected from a student at each of Berkeley Heights’ six schools. This year’s winning projects included an elementary school Environmental Day program, a school garden bird feeder, a Gaga pit, VR goggles, a 3D printer for the middle school STEM program, and funding for the Environmental Club to install LED light bulbs throughout the high school. The overall district winning project was a telescope to be used in conjunction with a new astronomy program at the town’s public library. BHEF grants are made possible due to the generous support of community families and businesses.

Teens Start Organization to Offer FREE TUTORING SERVICES

Three teens, two high school seniors at Academy for Allied Health Sciences, who are from New Providence, Anuva Yonzon, and Rafay Niazi, and Neil Pandey, an 11th grader at Newark Academy, who is from Basking Ridge, have founded a tutoring organization called NJ Academic Resources Alliance (NARA), which offers free tutoring to students in elementary school and middle school who reside in many local towns.

They founded NARA in 2020, during the pandemic, with a goal of leveling the playing field for all students who need tutoring. Their mission is to offer free extra academic support to students in need, and their tagline on their website is “Education Without Expense.”

“We feel that education and potential shouldn’t be limited by economics, so we do it for free,” says Anuva.

The teens look at NARA as offering two-way learning. The students get tutored, and the tutors learn from the experience of interacting with students and their parents. “The families have been very welcoming, and we see our students as family,” says Neil.

Right now, there are 37 tutors at NARA offering help in all subjects. They tutor one-on-one remotely and have sessions daily. In addition, the tutors create unique educational plans/curriculums for their students.

NARA’s vision is to become a national organization that helps all students in need. In addition, the teens hope that NARA will become an organization that provides opportunities for young people to volunteer to create change, and that NARA becomes a valuable asset for students who need support.

“We feel pretty good about what we are doing, and we are part of NARA because it is something we believe in,” says Rafay.

WITH Grace Initiative Supports Children with Cancer

Fourteen-year-old cancer survivor Grace Eline, of Long Hill Township, is determined to be the voice for kids with cancer. She gives back whenever she can and actually began supporting pediatric cancer charities before she was even diagnosed at nine, in 2018, with a Germinoma, which is a rare brain tumor. Her mother, Aubrey, says that as a child, for her birthday, Grace always asked for donations to St. Jude instead of gifts. In addition, while she was sick, Grace didn’t let her cancer get her down; rather, she continued to give back to others even through her fight. She says, “It was healing to give back.” Once Grace was in remission two years later, she started the WITH Grace Initiative.

The WITH Grace Initiative was created to make an impact by supporting pediatric cancer research initiatives and families when they need it most. Wanting no one to feel alone, the Initiative connects and supports pediatric cancer warriors. Through the organization, Grace collects supplies and gifts to give to less fortunate cancer families nationally, reaching 16 states to date, so they can focus on the fight. She also works to gather funds to support pediatric cancer research initiatives and provide cancer family support.

Grace actively drives awareness for the need for pediatric cancer funding “so no one else has to feel the pain of this disease.” One of the main goals of the WITH Grace Initiative is to impress upon the government the need for less toxic treatments and side effects for children “because as young people, those in remission have long lives ahead of them,” explains Grace. In fact, the teen has advocated at the state and federal level for bills to help children with cancer.

The WITH Grace Initiative also hosts fundraisers to raise money for pediatric cancer research. This year, there are plans for a virtual wine tasting, a dance-a-thon, and a mini golf tournament. The Initiative also sponsors free family photo shoots.

“We inspire acts of kindness towards others with Grace,” says Grace, who also hosts virtual get-togethers with kids in treatment or survivorship to make them feel connected, cared about, and to let them know they are not alone. Grace says doing these Zoom calls was especially important during COVID when everyone, particularly cancer patients and survivors, was feeling isolated.

Grace boasts an impressive resume for someone so young. In late 2022, Grace was honored during NJ Devils Hockey Fights Cancer night, for being a true inspiration. In 2019, she was honored at the State of the Union address by President Trump who used her story to encourage Congress to support a $500 million increase in funding for childhood cancer research. In addition, Grace travels to be a keynote speaker at both national and international corporate meetings and association conferences.

Grace’s mom Aubrey says, “Grace was always an old spirit. She is the voice for the ones who are no longer here and for the ones still in the fight.”

8th Annual Pasta Dinner & Basket Raffle

The Community Service Association of New Providence (CSA), together with the New Providence Lions Club, will host a fun, family-friendly that includes a feast of pasta, salad, and dessert.

The Community Service Association of New Providence is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization which provides temporary assistance to New Providence residents with financial needs. This could mean helping a family or individual with medical bills, paying utility bills or rent, supplying food, and more. The CSA also works with New Providence’s Boy Scouts/Cub Scouts and Faith Lutheran Church on the annual, town-wide Scouting for Food drive and the new LINC Food Pantry started by New Providence High School students.

“We are excited to bring back the Pasta Dinner & Basket Raffle for the first time since 2020,” said CSA President Thomas Montrone. “We hope people will come out to enjoy a delicious meal and try to win terrific prize baskets for a great cause,” he continued.

House of Dezign founder, Roya Ranjbar, dreamed of having a fashion career early in childhood. After completing a sevenyear fashion program, Ranjbar went on to work with many fashion brands. Now, she’s fostering the growth of several generations of designers. “I’m eager to share my passion for and extensive experience with fashion to inspire young, creative minds,” said Ranjbar. “My classes allow learners to explore and develop their ideas in a safe, nurturing, calm, and focused environment.”

The courses at House of Dezign are designed with the success of its students in mind, with clear, easy-to-follow, yet thorough instructions. Throughout the various programs, students will learn fundamental skills from developing moodboards and sketching ideas to pattern making and

sewing their own garments. These courses also delve into fashion history and etiquette to bolster students’ background knowledge.

House of Dezign has a broad range of programs to choose from. One-on-one private lessons are available to students of all ages and skill levels. For kids ages six through 12, there is a “Dezign with Me” class that includes the child and a caregiver, as well as a Basics of Sewing program and a one-week kids’ summer camp! Teens ages 13 through 17 have programs including Basics of Sewing levels one and two; a oneweek summer fashion workshop; and a two-week portfolio development. For adults, additional classes include a BYOB Sip & Sew event, as well as a course that guides designers on upcycling (taking existing garments and re-imagining them).

Importantly, the courses at House of Dezign are not just for those hoping to pursue a career in fashion design. All lovers of fashion (or creating) are welcome! “Fashion design is about releasing and cultivating your creative spirit,” said Ranjbar. “It’s a safe place for anyone to express themselves.”

Safety, Support & Solutions for Abuse

Everyone knows someone who is currently experiencing abuse. It does not discriminate. Abuse can happen to anyone without regard to age, gender, sexual orientation, race, or socio-economic status. Since one in four women and one in seven men suffer from intimate partner abuse, you likely have a story of your own to tell.

In 1976, the problem was even worse, albeit unaddressed, due to the stigma around domestic violence. However, a small group of women decided that enough was enough. With nothing more than a few resources and a relentless sense of determination, these women set up shelters within their own homes to support survivors of domestic violence. It was in these informal, communal spaces that JBWS began.

they think their relationship is unhealthy, their empathetic staff is there. Moments after an incidence of abuse is reported to police, members of JBWS’ Crisis Response Team are at the hospital or police department offering critical access to resources.

When a survivor leaves their home in the middle of the night, they are welcomed into JBWS’ Emergency Safe House Shelter. If a person requires additional assistance, they may enter JBWS’ Transitional Living Program. With 11 fully furnished apartments, the Transitional Living Program enables survivors to receive long-term residential assistance and access to counseling, case management, life skills training, services for children, and assistance finding permanent housing.

As they process their experience with abuse, JBWS offers numerous counseling groups to help them heal. When it’s time to face their abusive partner in court, JBWS is at the survivor’s side offering legal advocacy and support through the JBWS-led Morris Family Justice Center.

Today, JBWS is a non-profit agency that offers safety, support, and solutions to all people impacted by domestic violence. When someone calls JBWS’ 24-Hour Helpline (1-877-782-2873) because

However, JBWS doesn’t just respond to abuse, they work to prevent it through community education and abuse intervention programs. The Dating Abuse Prevention Program educates teenagers and young adults about dating abuse while the JBWS-led Jersey Center for Non-Violence provides counseling to people who use abuse in their relationships. Through this counseling, they are able to stop the intergenerational cycle of abuse, change their behavior, and end domestic violence at its source.

All this is possible because a group of women decided that they were going to make a difference in their community. The collective strength of those few women is the reason that JBWS has answered more than 230,000 calls to its helpline, counseled or shelter more than 115,000 families, and educated well over 490,000 teenagers and young adults about dating abuse in just over 45 years.

Her golden rule: To listen and learn about each client, apply that to how they live in their homes, and then use their color and style preferences to create a space that fits their lifestyle. “Each client is unique and my design selections reflect that,” she says.

Rachel’s mother, Dorothy, started CWI 50 years ago with two partners in the town of Summit. After Rachel, who majored in Fine Arts at Roger Williams University and initially wanted to be a fashion designer, and her business partner and husband Gary, took over, they expanded and hired other talented people in order to assist more clients.

Today, it’s a full-service residential interior design firm now located in New Providence, and she and her talented staff can handle the entire process— from concept and design detailing to material selection and implementation. When designing a room, Rachel uses her appreciation for color while incorporating multiple textures for a classic and elegant look with lots of modern lines and a little bit of whimsy.

CWI has won many awards for their designs, including Mansion in May’s top honor, the Tulip Award, twice in 2006 and 2014. The firm is also often complimented by leading media sources, such as The Huffington Post and Aspire Design and Home magazine.

Rachel’s advice to other women who dream of running their own businesses: “It sounds cliché, but be passionate, determined and willing to put in the hard work,” she says. “That way, the business will grow and blossom organically.”

Dr. Fless feels a sense of responsibility to train the next generation. She mentors student and resident physicians as well as respiratory therapists. She is the physician leader at Cooperman Barnabas for The Schwartz Center Rounds, a national organization whose mission is to put compassion at the heart of healthcare through programs, education, and advocacy. “Our trainees have been invited into these rounds and they have the opportunity to present at them.” She has been heralded for her teaching prowess and received the Golden Apple Harvey E. Nussbaum Award for excellence in teaching. Of those she has taught or mentored she says, “I am proud that they have learned excellent technical skills and compassionate caregiving expertise at Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center.”

Among her many accomplishments, Dr. Fless was recognized by the American Cancer Society for her work to provide an early diagnosis of lung cancer through low-dose screening CTs of the lung in high-risk patients. While in her early teens, Sandra Fava watched a close family member become a victim of domestic violence. “I saw the effects of that, but also the failures of the legal system, and I really wanted to do something to change it,” she says. “Today, I help families make transformations in their lives.”

Sandra became an attorney over 17 years ago and clerked for the presiding family court judge in Morris County right out of law school. She was also the chair of the Essex County Bar Association Family Law Committee for about 10 years.

She joined Fox Rothschild LLP in Morristown in 2007. “When I became a partner in 2013, I was nervous, but really proud,” says Sandra. “I’m the first in my family to go to college and then go on to law school, and this was something I really aspired to do.”

She still follows the advice she was given years ago: Find a mentor/become a mentor. “Sometimes people, especially women, are scared to ask for or provide mentorships because they don’t value themselves enough,” says Sandra. “I think it’s important to find and become mentors, and these should be people not just in your practice area, but those outside of it and of different genders, backgrounds and beliefs.”

Sandra believes this practice makes for a more well-rounded attorney, and a better work-life culture. “I’ve mentored many men and women throughout my career, and I learned as much from them as I hope they learned from me.”

Peace Love Home

Even as a teenager, Apryl Gassman was organized and neat, with socks rolled tidily in a drawer. Family and friends acknowledged she had a natural knack for organizing, often asking her for help reworking their spaces. Yet, she said, she spent years in a job she was unhappy in. Then came the pandemic. “Everyone was reinventing themselves,” said Gassman. So, two years ago, she decided to do what she loved…she launched Peace Love Home, which declutters, reorganizes, and straightens up everything from closets to pantries to offices to garages— and everything in-between.

Her first ‘client’ was a friend who needed help preparing for a major home renovation and insisted on paying for Gassman’s aid. “I couldn’t believe I was getting paid for something I love to do!” she exclaimed.

If a house is cluttered, “People don’t want to be judged,” she states. The single mother of two teenagers understands it can be emotionally difficult detaching from excess ‘stuff.’ She helps her clients unclutter without judgement.

After hearing from her clients what their needs are, she gets started on a system, and loves hearing how happy they are with the reset. She offers monthly or quarterly maintenance services, but finds most clients transition easily to her systems. She also assists those who are cleaning out a loved one’s home, either in advance of a move to assisted living, or after a passing. Her relationships with nonprofits ensure usable items are donated, not thrown out.

Like many who’ve found fulfillment in their own business, her advice is simple: “Make sure you’re doing something every day that you love.”

Catherine (Cat) Fisher

Sadie’s & Kitchen a la Mode, Owner

Catherine (Cat) Fisher always had a goal of opening an ethical and sustainable focused clothing store. With Sadie’s in South Orange, she has met that goal. Then, when the owner of Kitchen a la Mode told her he was closing, she knew how important that store was to South Orange, so she had to save it. She also lives in town and believes in supporting her community.

“In both stores, we approach every interaction with a focus on helping first and on honesty,” she says. “We never want somebody walking out wearing something they don’t look good in or purchasing a kitchen tool they don’t actually understand how to use.”

Her staff consists of people from various generations, and she also hires from the JESPY House, which trains adults with disabilities how to live independently. “We just want to make sure that we have a really diverse group of people.”

Carol Karsos

Partner of East Hanover Diner

Carol Karsos knows the restaurant business inside out. Being born into a restaurant family, it is all she has ever known. Karsos met her husband, Michael, one summer when she was working in her family’s restaurant—the Brookside Dinner. Michael later bought the restaurant with his brothers John and George. After graduating from college with a Management/Marketing Degree, Karsos married Michael and became the restaurant’s fourth partner. In 2013, the four owners bought their current restaurant, the East Hanover Diner.

The East Hanover Diner is a traditional Greek Diner that offers standard menu fare. With freshly baked desserts and bread selections, patrons never leave the Diner hungry. Traditional Greek cuisine is also a daily specialty.

Karsos loves all aspects of the restaurant business, which she says is hard, grueling work. “You must have a good work ethic to succeed in the restaurant business. Challenges happen 24/7.” Still, owning and managing a diner is a great opportunity. “Where else can you offer your customers large portions at a great value?”

Mona Lisa Framing

As a girl in Caracas, Venezuela, Dayana Moreno loved going to museums with her father. She dreamed of a life working with art, and, after moving to the U.S., got a degree in art history from Montclair State University. Then, she fell in love with framing. By 2007, she was working as the production manager of Maplewood’s Mona Lisa Framing. She purchased it from the original owner in 2018. The pandemic forced her to learn fast how to run a business in order to survive. A friend gave her sound advice about business lows: “It’s the space between the notes that makes the music.”

“There will always be highs and lows,” she said. “The lows are an opportunity to reassess and look for growth.” Not only has she survived, but flourished, continuing to cherish the stories and treasures she helps clients preserve—from a child’s fingerprints to priceless artworks.

When Faith Meets Fear

It took Alexander the Great 10 years—from the time he was 23 to his death at age of 33—to conquer most of the known world. Alexander has been studied and admired throughout the centuries for his incredible willingness and ability to take action in the face of adversity.

This is made even more interesting by the fact that Alexander’s armies were always outnumbered, sometimes by as much as twenty to one. But Alexander’s philosophy was to attack so swiftly and move so quickly that his soldiers didn’t have time to be afraid. He knew that fear is the greatest obstacle to success. The more we think about all the possible reasons something won’t work out, the more our fear paralyzes us, and we end up not taking any action at all.

Fear blocks more people from achieving their goals. It is the anticipation of negative results, imagination working overtime. People are afraid of failing, afraid they will make a mistake, afraid they will look foolish. Many times, what we’re afraid of isn’t even real. You could look at the acronym F.E.A.R., which stands for False Evidence Appearing Real, and realize it’s the reason we start to believe the excuses we make for ourselves. Therefore, the first step in taming any fear is to analyze what is real and what is not. Then dive in and take action.

In order to take action, we have to learn to get rid of our fear of failure. Author Tom Peters tells about how he had the privilege of introducing the late Sam Walton, the founder of Walmart, when he was going to be introduced into the sales and marketing executives Hall of Fame.

“What can you say in two minutes about a guy like Walton?” says Peters. “During that time, I called David Glass, CEO of Walmart. I said, ‘If you had 90 seconds to say something about Sam Walton, what would you say?’ Quicker than a wink, he answered, ‘Sam Walton is not afraid to fail. He’ll give something a try, he’ll make a total mess of it, and walk back in tomorrow with a smile on his face and another idea.’ It’s that ability to try something, make a mess of it, and get on with the next action that allows us to win out over fear.”

What we don’t think about is that there’s only one first time. Once you take an action, it could never be quite as scary or difficult again. Comedian Rita Rudner told me when she got up on stage for the first time in the beginning of her career she was in front of a handful of drunken patrons at three in the morning. Those times were difficult, but she faced her fears and went on. Not only did she put the worst behind her, she learned something every time she stepped up to that microphone.

Every time we step up to try something we’ve never done before, we learn more than we expect. The uniqueness of the experience gives us insights we could never get except by taking an action. Why is it that children are such quick learners? It’s because everything is new to them. They’re experiencing everything for the first time. When we venture out into new worlds, we open our minds and our senses to things we might never otherwise experience. Our knowledge of the world expands tremendously with each new step we take.
