Picture Perfect Framing from Mona Lisa

“Youname it, I’ll frame it—and I’ll help you find the perfect frame,” says custom framer and art graduate Dayana Moreno, owner of Mona Lisa Framing in Maplewood. At her 800-sq.-ft shop and studio, Moreno offers a multitude of framing materials, from woods, veneers, and gilded materials to colorful, patterned acrylics along with non-reflective museum glass and museum treatments. Styles include traditional, contemporary, and transitional frames.

Moreno has framed everything from oil and acrylic canvasses, etchings, and Tibetan mandalas to jerseys, flags, and board games—even shoes. “I work with the customer to determine what frame treatment will work best for the area of the house they are going to display their work in,” Moreno states. “And I choose the best materials to use to preserve the work.”

With 24 years of experience in framing, Moreno has built a loyal customer base and has received a great deal of praise. “Some people have been coming to me for many years for all their framing needs,” Moreno notes. Mona Lisa Framing hosts many repeat customers. “Customers also tell me my work is beautiful, and the best thing is, I enjoy doing it, so it’s a labor of love.” Next time you want to frame a precious keepsake, know that you can get it done with love that will last.

Fabulous High-Fashion Finds

When customers and consignors walk into DoubleTake in Short Hills, they feel like they’ve entered a beautiful high-end boutique. Stylish clothing is organized by type and/or designer and the salespeople are friendly, knowledgeable and attentive.

Shoppers can find everything from clothing and handbags to belts and shoes from contemporary labels such as Veronica Beard, Jonathan Simkhai, and Theory to luxury brands like Prada, Gucci, Chanel, and Christian Louboutin. Every item they accept is authenticated and inspected to make sure it’s clean and in perfect condition.

“We carry jeans, cocktail attire, mother-of-the- bride and -groom dresses and more. Also, these are items you’re not seeing on everyone else; they’re unique,” states Marci Kessler, owner of DoubleTake.

For the consignors who patronize the shop, they appreciate knowing their beloved items are getting a second life. “They’re doing something with their clothing that’s sustainable,” says Marci.

Consignors often receive 50 percent of the proceeds, and sometimes higher if an item is in high demand. And instead of taking the money when something is sold, they can set up a credit line to purchase merchandise. DoubleTake also has a rewards program, so when customers spend a certain amount of money, they get dollar rewards that they can use towards future purchases.

“We have a really good relationship with both consignors and customers,” Marci says. “We’re trustworthy; we’re honest, and we’re very competitive with our prices.”

Make Shopping a Fun and Easy Experience

Everything from clothing, jewelry, shoes, handbags, and gift items to the very trendy crocheted items popular this spring and summer will sport bright and fun yellow, pink, and blue colors, according to Marie Khoury, owner of the Pinks Jewels Boutique in Livingston. And at this ‘lifestyle boutique,’ which carries all these items, there is sure to be something for everyone as the owner keeps all of her customers in mind when stocking up at her 750-sq.-ft shop.

“I started out as a jewelry shop 13 years ago,” says Khoury. “but I became a lifestyle boutique in response to changing customer shopping preferences during the pandemic.”

Khoury’s shop has become a minidepartment store that helps customer’s meet multiple needs in one stop. For instance, a customer attending a dinner party can come in, find a new top and find a hostess gift at the same time, thanks to the popular line of shatterproof melamine bowls, platters, and trays the shop carries.

Customers can also find gift items of all sorts, including candles from the Capri Blue line. Other designer lines offered by the shop include the Bevy Flog line of clothing from Israel, offered exclusively in the area at Pink Jewels, and the Michael Aram line of home accessories. But the emphasis is on customer service—and making the shopping experience fun and easy for everyone.

The WordPlay Way

WordPlay, formerly known as Krugers Tutors, is an immersive, sensory child-led learning experience filled with themed activities rooted in preschool readiness for young children. Owner, Jamie Kruger has many years of higher eduction specializing in education children with language-based learning differences.

WordPlay is an Orton-Gillingham certified program that builds and advances reading skills in children. Orton–Gillingham was the first teaching approach specifically designed to help struggling readers by explicitly teaching the connections between letters and sounds. Once children know consistent rules and patterns, they’re better able to decode words on their own. Reading instruction builds over time with Orton-Gillingham instruction. This method advances your child’s reading abilities by breaking reading and writing into smaller skills involving letters and sounds, then building on these skills over time. At WordPlay, sessions will always be focused on the learning needs of the specific student. Regardless of academic level. Children will progress through the individualized instruction at his or her own pace. Outside of the sessions, teachers will work as a liaison between home and school to ensure all of your child’s academic needs are fully met.

Appliances for Every Need

Find the Best Value, Options, and Friendly Service All In One Place!

Family owned and operated since 1984, Joe D’s Appliances is a one stop shop for anyone’s home appliance needs. Originally located in Clifton, owner Stuart Lippman decided to make the move to a larger showroom in Fairfield just prior to the pandemic. The beautiful, new showroom allows Joe D’s to display many of the brands they carry ranging from the highestend, for the most discerning buyers, to the more budget focused options for property managers and renters alike. “Our staff has the experience and expertise to help guide a complete kitchen remodel or new appliance purchase”, says Adam Lippman.

Appliances today have a myriad of options, and it can be overwhelming to start the process from scratch. That’s where Joe D’s differentiates itself from the big box and other stores. “Listening to our customers’ needs, having a deep understanding of the available products, and then conveying the ideas and options succinctly is our objective. Competitive pricing helps too along with a dedicated staff that is always available post-sale, “says Adam. The company claims they will not be beat on price.

The team liaises with architects, designers, contractors, and homeowners to ensure the desired

function and aesthetic is achieved. Additional services include on-site surveys, prior to delivery, to ensure that the project goes smoothly along with white glove delivery and installations.

A huge focus with summer approaching is helping customers create the perfect outdoor kitchen. From grills, smokers, and pizza ovens to bar sinks and refrigeration, Joe D’s is ready to create that perfect outdoor space.

Mezza Mediterranean Still Wowing Diners Five Years Later…

Vincent Leone, the General Manager of popular restaurant Mezza Mediterranean in Westwood opened the second restaurant in Livingston five years ago as an owner and has been hitting it out of the park ever since. The establishment serves authentic Mediterranean food with a modern touch blending Israeli, Tunisian, and Moroccan inspired dishes with a touch of Greek and Italian. Only the finest of ingredients are used to wow the pallets of patrons, who enjoy high-end service in a casual atmosphere.

Mezza Mediterranean: Still Wowing Diners Five Years Later…

(continued from the previous page)

“We strive to do our best, offer the best service, and serve high-quality dishes that give our clientele something to rave about,” says Vincent.

Nestled in a bustling strip mall along Eisenhower Parkway, opening the restaurant in Livingston has proven to be a success. “Livingston is a great town. We enjoy providing our clientele a great dining location that they can make their own. We love supporting the community through our involvement in charitable endeavors,” says Vincent.

Vincent is no stranger to the restaurant business, he cut his teeth working at New Jersey restaurants South City Grill in

Mountain Lakes and Rochelle Park, and Tabor Road Tavern and Roots Steakhouse of Harvest Group, and then at Bobby Van’s Steakhouse in NYC on 50th and 6th Street to name a few. After working in the restaurant business since he was 17, and holding down various side jobs for many years, Vincent, now 33, saved up enough on his own to open his first restaurant at 28 years old. Vincent plans to expand to other towns in the future.

“A big goal of mine, ever since I was young, was to open my own restaurant using what I learned along the way to create a beautiful, welcoming atmosphere, while offering quality food and service,” he says.

26 Inside Livingston Spring 2023
Vincent Leone

One reason for his restaurants’ success is that Vincent has maintained the same culinary team throughout his endeavors. “We treat our staff like members of our family,” he says.

Mezza, which seats 95 inside, and 80 on the beautiful outdoor patio, offers catering for parties, and business luncheons. Popular dishes include Crispy Cauliflower, Hummus, Persian Shrimp, and Mediterranean Fish Tacos. Diners also love the Grilled Skirt Steak, Whole Grilled Branzino, Chicken Shish Kebab, and Short Rib Pappardelle Pasta. For dessert, the Homemade Baklava, Pistachio Baklava, and Ricotta Fritters are favorites.

Open seven days a week, Mezza offers lunch from 11:30am-3pm, and dinner from 5-9pm. On Fridays and Saturdays, dinner is served from 5-10pm. Mezza also offers take out and online delivery, either through DoorDash, or via the website.

Enhance Your Outdoor Comfort with Retractable Awnings The Perfect Solution for Sun Protection

When it comes to enjoying your outdoor spaces, awnings play a crucial role in providing shade and ensuring comfort even on the hottest of days. That’s why many homeowners opt for retractable awnings, as they offer the flexibility to adapt to changing weather conditions. On scorching summer days, you can extend your awning fully, creating an oasis of shade. As the temperature cools, you have the freedom to leave the awning closed, allowing the warm sun to embrace your space.

Retractable awnings offer a myriad of advantages, with the fully enclosed hood safeguarding the fabric and enhancing the lifespan of the motor. Moreover, their compact design sets them apart from stationary awnings, making them an ideal choice for those seeking convenience and versatility.

At Window Works, we take retractable awnings to a whole new level. Contrary to popular belief, our awnings offer adjustable pitch options, allowing you to

customize the angle according to your preference. You have the power to raise and lower each corner independently, granting you ultimate control over the shade and sunlight distribution.

For those seeking additional coverage, we provide optional drop-down shades for our retractable awnings. The Future of 3D Orthodontics

LightForce Braces… Braces, But Better

LightForce braces are a relatively recent development in orthodontic treatment. The cutting-edge solution unites modern 3D printing technology with a fully digital treatment plan that provides a great experience and results. Dr. Eric Sacks of Sacks Orthodontics in Livingston answers questions about this new technology using 3D printing.

What are LightForce Braces?

LightForce braces are fully personalized 3D printed toothcolored brackets and are manufactured to precisely match the unique shape and orientation of the patients’ teeth, unlike traditional brackets which are mass-produced to fit everyone. The LightForce treatment plan is individually designed based on each patient’s unique tooth shape, jawline, and facial structure—offering a perfect fit—with an efficient, more discreet, and more comfortable treatment, from start to finish.

How do LightForce Braces differ from traditional braces?

Traditional braces use stock brackets and wires to apply force to the teeth. In contrast, LightForce offers the world’s only fully customized 3D printed braces that use low force, which can result in less discomfort, and improve the straightening accuracy with outcomes being achieved in a shorter treatment time. Their custom brackets also result in fewer emergency appointments.

How long does treatment with LightForce Braces typically take?

Because of the customization, the ideal outcome of treatment with LightForce is often achieved 6-9 months faster on average when compared to traditional braces. Because they are fully customized, the overall treatment time is expedited, and fewer office visits are required.

Who is a good candidate for LightForce Braces?

LightForce braces allows orthodontics to provide a custom fit for every patient, which means less discomfort, more effective straightening, and shorter treatments for both teens and adults. LightForce is the next generation of tooth straightening—it’s more efficient, more personalized, more esthetic, and more convenient than any other option on the market.

How can I find out if LightForce Braces are right for me?

The best way to determine if LightForce braces are the right treatment option for you is to schedule a consultation with an orthodontist. They will be able to evaluate your orthodontic needs and help you decide if these are the best choice for achieving your desired results.

Do You Know EVERYTHING the Livingston Health Department Offers?

The robust Livingston Health Department has ten staff members that oversee the public health services available for Livingston and Millburn/Short Hills residents. Programs include but are not limited to disease prevention and promotion of physical and mental well-being, welfare and social services, environmental inspections, health education, and enforcement to assure the highest quality of life for the residents of the communities served.

The department consists of a vital statistics division and a social worker. In addition, this nursing division includes two nurses (one being the nursing supervisor), a health educator, and two Environmental health inspectors. Health Officer/Director of Health Michael Raimo oversees the whole department.

“The Livingston Health Department is an integral part of the community,” says Michael. “Not many people know about all of our offerings,” he adds.

The nurses conduct school audits and processes related to people’s general well-being, screenings, and immunizations. In addition, they investigate infectious diseases. Along with the health educator, they also conduct health fairs and flu clinics. The coordinators in the department implement general health screenings and blood draws. Some screenings offered include skin, eye, and general blood screenings.

There are also environmental specialists on staff who inspect restaurants and other food establishments, pools, daycares, summer camps, and more. They also respond to health nuisances and complaints. “The public can reach the specialists by calling our office at 973-535-7961,” says Michael.

Other offerings include Welfare and Social Services, which the social worker takes care of. In addition, the social worker assists with the town’s food pantries and drop-offs to residents in need. Other services include but are not limited to welfare checkups, welfare paperwork, client management, referral services, and assistance with housing for people experiencing homelessness.

Aside from these programs, the Vital Statistics department, which includes a Supervisory Registrar, a Deputy, and an alternate Registrar, processes marriage licenses,

birth certificates, and death certificates and schedules appointments for marriage applications and amendments.

“We are here to help the community in any way we can,” expresses Michael.

Putting The “I Care” in EYE CARE

A Highly-Experienced Surgeon Providing Personalized Treatments

For Dr. Kurt Jackson of Jackson Eye Care, LLC in Livingston, the most rewarding aspect of being an eye surgeon is having the ability to help maintain, restore and even improve vision for his patients. And, all treatments are conducted in a warm and comfortable environment. “We are always cordial and place an emphasis on making the patients feel like we hear and understand their concerns,” he says. “When the patient gets to me, I make a point of taking extra time to help the patient understand their condition and how I intend to care for them.”

Truly placing an emphasis on patient care and incorporating this personal touch into his practice is just one of the ways it stands out. “Our patients are never made to feel like they are ‘just a number,’” says the vitreo-retinal surgeon.

Jackson Eye Care also stays up to date on the latest findings and treatments. “We provide them with state-of-the-art technology and evidence-based care,” says Dr. Jackson. “We couple this with a caring and compassionate staff that does its best to accommodate all of our patients’ needs.”

Another important factor he and his staff take seriously is providing immediate and continuing feedback to referring doctors. This way, they are not, as he says, kept “in the dark” with regards to the management plan for their patients. When not in the office, Dr. Jackson, who is also a former U.S. Army medic, prefers to spend his free time with his family. “As a father of two teenagers and a ‘twenty something,’ there is always an activity or event waiting for me.” His wife, Kai, is also his practice manager.

Foods for Allergy Relief

When you suffer from allergies, your body launches an immune response against and irritant—pollen, grass, mold—triggering itchy, watery eyes, congestion, a runny nose, and general misery. There are certain foods that may help with allergy relief. These foods contain nutrients that can help reduce inflammation and boost the immune system, which may alleviate allergy symptoms.

Vitamin C

Foods rich in vitamin C, such as citrus fruits, strawberries, kiwis, and red peppers, can help reduce inflammation and boost the immune system.

Omega-3s

Foods high in omega-3 fatty acids, such as salmon, tuna, walnuts, and flaxseed, can help reduce inflammation and improve lung function, which may alleviate allergy symptoms.

Quercetin

Quercetin-rich foods, such as apples, onions, and berries, have antihistamine properties that can help reduce allergy symptoms.

Probiotics

Probiotic-rich foods, such as yogurt, kefir, and kimchi, can help improve gut health, which is linked to a healthy immune system and reduced allergy symptoms.

It’s important to note that while these foods may help alleviate allergy symptoms, they are not a replacement for medical treatment. If you have severe or persistent allergy symptoms, it’s important to speak with a healthcare professional.

A Real Welcome Mat

YogaSix Offers Warm, All-Levels Classes

Experienced yoga practitioners and newbies alike will find a home at Livingston’s new YogaSix studio, said owner Mille Sawhney. The studio’s motto is energizing, empowering and fun. “We believe that everyone deserves the mindbody experience of yoga. YogaSix aims to make yoga available to all fitness levels in an inclusive, safe environment where you don’t feel intimidated,” she said.

Some people are curious about yoga but decide it’s not for them because “I’m not flexible,” she explained. But each person’s practice is their own journey, said Sawhney, and YogaSix fosters a community atmosphere where the class is fun and nonjudgemental.

YogaSix delivers life enhancing benefits through its six core classes: Y6 101, Y6 Restore, Y6 Slow Flow, Y6 Hot, Y6 Power, and Y6 Sculpt & Flow. All classes are heated and create a “full sensory experience” in each class, using gentle, warm colorful lighting,

upbeat music, incorporating heat & humidity, and concluding with a “sweet-smelling savasana,” the classic final resting pose.

All instructors are fully certified, and chosen, said Sawhney, for their fun, energetic, and friendly personalities as well as their empowering communication style and yoga training. In addition, a specially installed air filtration system helps keep the studio’s air clean and germ free so participants can practice safely. The studio offers an introductory week of unlimited classes for $26, and a special firstmonth unlimited classes package for $99. “You will be inspired by our community and want to come to class time and time again,” Sawhney promised.

Master Pizza: Fresh, Fast & Delicious

Frank Castronovo grew up in the restaurant business. As the son of restaurateurs, Frank learned to cook all types of Italian food, but he knew there was something special about pizza. What better way to celebrate a special occasion than with a pizza? So in 1990, Frank jumped at the chance to buy Master Pizza. Frank’s wife, Marylee, later joined the business, creating another successful family enterprise.

For more than 33 years, Master Pizza has been an esteemed community partner. “We have had great customers over the years, and for that reason, we like to give back to the community,” says Marylee. Master Pizza offers rewards programs and periodic contests such as Create Your Own Pizza. In addition, they support numerous community fundraisers for the Little League, school districts, and other non-profit groups and sponsor appreciation days for nurses and teachers. On June 24, they will be the pizza sponsor at Turtle Back Zoo’s ‘Brew at the Zoo’ event.

Master Pizza is known for keeping its menu fresh and varied, using only the finest quality ingredients. Daily specialty pizzas and pizzas of the month are part of the menu. The restaurant also honors national pizza days with exclusive discounts, including National Pizza Party Day on May 19, Margarita Pizza Day on June 11, and National Pepperoni Day on September 20.

With the flagship store in Livingston, Master Pizza has expanded over the years to include three more locations in Union, West Orange, and Carlstadt. All four shops serve the same extensive

menu that includes: pizzas galore, cold subs, fresh salads, wings, hot appetizers, traditional Italian entrees and pasta dishes, as well as delicious desserts.

Master Pizza is open daily to serve the needs of its clients: Monday-Thursday 11am-10pm; Friday and Saturday 11am11pm; and Sunday 12-10pm. Because the restaurant is primarily take-out, Master Pizza offers quick and convenient ways to order. They offer online ordering, a text-to-order system, orders by phone, and fast, efficient, and free delivery service within a three-mile radius. Master Pizza provides catering selections and delivery for events, too.

INCOMING…

There are great benefits from being aware of the opportunities that lie within difficulties. Anytime we push ourselves into new territories or push our limits both physically and mentally, we will encounter obstacles, no’s, setbacks, and barriers. The real intelligence lies in understanding the incoming data by adjusting, learning and sometimes moving on. Here are a few ways to deal with incoming obstacles effectively:

1. Strong belief system.

Do you believe your idea or position has true value? That will go a long way when faced with objections and challenges. I’m approached by companies that want me to place their products and services into national accounts, or inventors that want me to market their inventions or athletes and entertainers that want me to help them breakthrough. If I don’t see a strong value in the offer it becomes very difficult to market. But when the added value is there it gives you the reasons to keep moving forward against the obstacles. Then tenacity and persistence are easier to enforce and have other benefits attached. People see that extra enthusiasm and effort as a positive energy, especially when backed by an attitude that you have faith behind your mission.

2. The counter is where the strategy lives.

In martial arts there is a great advantage to not striking first. The greatest fighters can see an attack coming before the movement begins. The ability to step aside or move into the attack allows you to control their energy or use it against them. In business I’ve seen people try to force their ideas or products on to someone first and it can backfire. When people see someone more interested in their own gains than understanding the key needs and goals of the client then more objections surface. By understanding not just your strengths but really tuning into the other persons goals it allows you to reduce the obstacles moving forward. I welcome the objections or adversity. I sometimes let them pass right by or address them head on. In martial arts there is a saying, “what’s hard dies, what is soft lives.” Stay flexible and learn how to blend with your opponent. When change comes your way keep an open mind and look for ways to take advantage of the situation by not being so rigid in your approach. When we get set in our ways that is what seems to get “in the way” of new opportunities.

3. Constant preparation and action builds confidence and clarity.

Massive action combined with deep research on your strategy has a powerful effect. When you study your targets, goals or anything tied into your objectives it gives you a calming feeling and internal confidence that helps you stand strong against any incoming obstacles. The next time you take on a challenge that might seem overwhelming try to seek out people who have the experience to be a mentor. Then read everything you can about the situation. We have at our fingertips a world of resources on the internet from audio, video and reading materials. But just as powerful as the research and preparation can be, nothing takes the place of learning from our actions. The work will teach you how to do it. I can’t say it any simpler. My focus over the years with each project has been this...to learn from my actions and act from my learning. One without the other suffers, but together provide a powerful strategy to deal with any of those incoming obstacles.
