Livingston Shows Love for Class of 2021

W

ith the advent of COVID-19, this year’s Livingston High School seniors are not getting to experience and enjoy all of the traditional hallmarks of senior year. So, Livingston is “Adopting the Class of 2012,” via a campaign called “Livingston Loves Our High School Seniors,” which will show support and shower seniors with love, recognition and encouragement around town. Businesses and residents are being asked to fill the streets in town with flags on light poles, banners on seniors’ houses, and more. Those interested in supporting this year’s seniors via this program are invited to make donations via Venmo @LHS-HSA. The donations will go directly to this community-wide effort.

est Orange Students are on a mission to “Tree Plenish” West Orange by pledging to plant 243 trees on April 24, which will offset the school’s yearly paper usage in 2018-2019. Those interested in participating can either request for a tree to be planted in their yard, volunteer to plant trees on the day of the event, or make monetary contributions at tree-plenish.org.

Safety, Support, & Solutions from Abuse By Christine S. Maxwell, photos by Dan Epstein

E

veryone knows someone—a family member, a friend, or a neighbor who is a victim of physical, mental, or financial abuse. Abuse does not discriminate. It occurs throughout our population and affects the young, the old, every race, gender, creed, and all socio-economic sectors. Because one in five people suffers from intimate partner abuse, you likely have a story to tell. In 1976, a group of women volunteers recognized the need to confront intimate domestic partner abuse within Morris County. With determination and few resources, they set up a helpline and shelters within their own homes to help abused women, the primary victims at that time. The murder/ suicides of two victims brought greater awareness to their mission. From its humble beginnings, the Jersey Battered Women’s Services (JBWS) opened its first shelter in 1978.

One Home at a Time

Celebrating its 45th anniversary this year, JBWS is a non-profit public agency offering its services to Morris and Essex Counties. Their assistance is far-reaching with approximately 80 full-time staff members more than 200 volunteers, the organization endeavors to fulfill its mission of safety, support, and solutions for abuse victims.

Safety

As the needs for services and social issues have changed, JBWS has evolved to meet these challenges. Diane Williams, CEO of JBWS remarked, ”Accordingly, our commitment to being inclusive and welcoming to survivors regardless of gender identity prompted us in 2019 to change our name from Jersey Battered Women’s Service to JBWS, Safety, Support & Solutions to Abuse. We continued to pivot in 2020 when victims were trapped at home with their abusers during the pandemic, and although our helpline, shelter, and transitional housing remained open, we quickly transitioned to remote options for counseling, legal advocacy, and support services. Additionally, as we move into 2021, we continue to strive to provide quality services through the lens of racial justice.”

Since housing insecurity is a growing concern in Morris County, JBWS and other leaders of Morris County’s nonprofit homeless shelters are working tirelessly with state officials to resolve this crisis. They urge the U.S. Secretary for Housing and Urban Development to make transitional housing for these populations a priority. Safety is the first objective of JBWS. After discussing options through the hotline services, abuse victims may find shortterm housing. Arbour House is JBWS’ safe shelter.

Essential Worker Creates Face Masks for Others in Her Downtime

E

ssential worker Linda Conway of West Orange has not only been going to work daily throughout the pandemic, she has made face masks for over 500 people—for free. Conway lives with one of her daughters and her son and self-isolates to avoid catching COVID-19 and bringing it home. To keep busy, she sews face masks. At first, Linda made masks for her large family, sending some as far away as California and Chicago. She then created masks for colleagues, policemen, teachers, her bowling team, former classmates, senior citizen buildings in East Orange and more. Soon, people began reaching out and asking her to make masks for them.

Lately, Linda has been working with another one of her daughters, Lauren Salvatoriello, a special education teacher at Kelly Elementary School in West Orange, to create masks that Lauren’s students like. “Many of Lauren’s students don’t like wearing masks and tend to remove them,” says Linda. “I have been creating masks with sliders that don’t cause irritation to see if that helps.” “This pandemic has truly brought out the best in a lot of us,” says Lauren. “Every day, people are heroes in their own ways. My mom’s giving nature sprung into action as soon as she realized there was a need for masks for everyone. She has never turned anyone away, and always delivers on my requests including masks for my special needs students.”

March 2021

Linda Conway showcases one of the more than 500 masks she has sewn and given away for free throughout the pandemic. Linda doesn’t charge for the masks, and credits her boss and parents for setting a charitable example that she strives to emulate. “People have asked if they can pay me, but I won’t accept money,” she says. “I just want to give back.”

hen the pandemic hit, the West Essex YMCA rose to the occasion to support the community. The Y provided a safe place for children, delivered food to the food insecure, supported the national blood shortage, checked on the senior population, distributed diapers to the needy and so much more. Since March 2020, The Y has provided 99,000 pounds of food to 108 local families through weekly distributions to local partners including Livingston’s Neighbors Helping Neighbors, Mental Health Association of Essex and Morris Counties, and Holy Trinity Episcopal Church Food Pantry in West Orange. The Y also collected and distributed over 1200 diapers to families in need. “During this unprecedented crisis, we are fortunate to have been able to support our

In addition, the Y provided a safe place for the children of 65 families including those of essential workers and first responders. The organization also developed a virtual homework education program, and a kindergarten readiness program. Recognizing that the senior population had become the most isolated population during the crisis, the Y stepped in to provide over 300 hours of wellness checks. The Y also addressed the national blood shortage by collecting over 55 pints of blood, saving approximately 165 lives. These efforts are monmouth, and there are more. The West Essex YMCA continues

TURNING HOMES INTO

DESTINATIONS

T

he West Orange St. Patrick’s Day Parade has been extremely fortunate over the years to have been supported by numerous sponsors that allow them to produce West Orange’s largest community event every year. Unfortunately, due to the ongoing Covid-19 situation, they have decided to postpone the March 2021 St. Patrick’s Day Parade. Since this pandemic started, the Committee—in conjunction with other Irish Organizations such as the Friendly Sons of Shillelagh, the Ancient Order of Hibernians, and the Women of Irish Heritage—has organized mask distributions, food drives, and, most recently, a winter coat drive that resulted in donating 230 coats to the Holy Trinity Church in West Orange. This year the Parade Committee will be donating all profits of their T-Shirt Fundraising Campaign to the Lady of The Valley Soup Kitchen. The “Valley” Church is one of four churches in the yearly rotation that Mass is held on the morning of the Parade. The Valley Soup Kitchen is a truly deserving organization that provides so much to those in need. In addition to the monies raised, the Parade Committee will match up to $500 in donations. Please consider purchasing a T-shirt and help the Parade Give Back.

How to SPARK Your Child’s

INTEREST in the Field of

EDUCATION I

f your child is an effective communicator and a natural born leader, they may have what it takes to be an amazing teacher. However, a love of learning is fundamental to a career in education. Here are a few ways to cultivate a passion for learning and put this rewarding career path on your child’s radar: • Be a good role model: Whether it’s checking out library books and watching documentaries or pursuing an advanced degree, you can serve as role model by demonstrating the ways that learning can and should be a lifelong pursuit. • Be understanding: School is not always going to be easy. Avoid punishments and other negative consequences for less than stellar grades. Such an approach is unlikely going to motivate your child to work harder and may only backfire. Instead, start a conversation and find out what’s going on. There could be a larger issue causing the setback. • Make learning fun: You can help make sure that learning never feels like a chore by giving your child the space and tools to explore topics of interest to them. For example, if your child wants to learn to play a musical instrument, check out new tools that make the process

fun and easy. For example, the range of keyboards available from Casio have built-in learning tools and also connect to the Chordana Play app, which can help budding musicians quickly take their skills to the next level. With the option to add any MIDI file into the app, your child can select the exact songs they want to learn. • Encourage peer-to-peer tutoring: Is your child excelling in a particular subject? Encourage them to help out classmates who may be struggling in the same area. Whether they volunteer their time bringing friends up to speed or turn it into a business, this is an excellent way for your child to hone instructional skills. When it comes to math and science, free online resources can help them dial in their own grasp of the material and get started tutoring. Check out Casio’s education resource page, which features lesson plans and webinars -- useful tools for students and educators of all ages. To access these resources, visit casioeducation.com. Today’s students are tomorrow’s teachers. By instilling a love of learning in your child, you may spark their interest in the field of education. —StatePoint photo: (c) ismagilov / iStock via Getty Images Plus

E

ssex County Executive Joseph N. DiVincenzo, Jr. is encouraging all Essex County residents to get vaccinated for the Coronavirus. To make an appointment at one of Essex County’s five vaccination centers, please visit EssexCOVID.org or call 973-877-8456. “Receiving the vaccine is the light at the end of the tunnel and getting vaccinated will help tremendously in stopping the spread of the Coronavirus. But in order for this to work, more than 70 percent of the population needs to be inoculated so we as a community can develop herd immunity,” DiVincenzo said. “Think of the thousands of Essex County lives lost and the countless numbers of family members and friends impacted by this deadly virus. Please join us in this effort to stop the spread of this virus by getting vaccinated,” he added.

Essex County has set up five vaccination centers. The locations and the municipalities served at each site are as follows: • Former Kmart building, 235 Prospect Avenue, West Orange: West Orange, Cedar Grove, Essex Fells, Montclair, Newark, Nutley and Verona. • Livingston Mall, former Sears building, 112 Eisenhower Parkway, Livingston (Entrance is in the back): Livingston, Belleville, Maplewood, Millburn, Newark, Orange and South Orange. • Essex County West Caldwell School of Technology, 620 Passaic Avenue, West Caldwell: West Caldwell, Bloomfield, Caldwell, Fairfield, Glen Ridge, Newark, North Caldwell and Roseland. • Essex County College, 303 University Avenue, Newark (Gym entrance on West Market Street): Newark, Belleville, East Orange, Irvington and Orange. • Essex County Donald M. Payne, Sr. School of Technology, 498-544 West Market Street, Newark: Newark, East Orange, Irvington and Orange. Residents of Newark can make an appointment at any of the five sites because of the size of the city’s population. (continued on 30)

The Donald Payne School is open Monday to Friday from 4-7pm and Saturday from 10am-4pm. To help residents who do not have access to computers, Essex County was the first in New Jersey to set up a call center. There currently are as many as 30 people staffing the call center Monday to Friday from 8am to 8pm and Saturday from 8am to 6pm. The call center can be reached at 973-877-8456. responsibilities and to work alongside us to help others. It is because of their efforts that we have been able to provide professionally and efficiently run vaccination centers,” the County Executive said. “I continue to receive positive feedback from those who have been vaccinated at one of our sites. They comment about how friendly and personable everyone is and how well organized we are,” he added.

Essex County currently is providing the Moderna vaccine. Vaccinations will be given in two doses. Residents making reservations to receive the vaccination will receive two appointments; the second appointment will be 28 days after the first appointment. It is critical that residents attend both appointments. Residents will be asked to provide their medical insurance information and their insurance provider will be billed $16.94 for the first dose and $28.39 for the second dose. If a resident does not have insurance, the cost of the vaccine will be covered by the Health Resources and Services Administration’s Provide Relief Fund. There will be no out-of-pocket expenses charged to residents. Each vaccination site is set up in a similar fashion. Residents entering the site will first be pre-screened to verify they have an appointment. Those who do not have an appointment will not be allowed to receive the vaccine that day. Residents

Tyra J. Manso, DDS TRAILBLAZER,

DENTIST, ENTREPRENEUR Montclair Pediatric Dental Care

Photos by Dan Epstein

A

s a female, African American, Board Certified Pediatric Dentist, Dr. Tyra Manso was already a trailblazer. As a first time mother in 2014, Dr. Manso decided to take a year off to stay at home with her son. After her year at home, she then began developing her vision, plans, and concept for her own practice.

In 2016, she brought her vision, passion and skills to the community and established Montclair Pediatric Dental Care (MPDC). Dr. Manso created a modern, family-friendly practice that is a bright and happy oasis for children, filled with decor inspired by children’s creativity and artistry. MPDC is environmentally friendly with state-of the art, energy efficient equipment, and eco-friendly materials to treat her young patients. Today this “Woman In Business” is proud to have planted roots in her community, and to have built a practice that has withstood the challenges of the pandemic. Dr. Manso is often referred to as a “kid whisperer” by parents of her patients and colleagues. Being around young patients and having the chance to inspire them “energizes me,” she says. Dr. Manso recommends beginning dental care by the age of one, which is a practice that follows the guidelines recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. (continued on page 38)

TRAILBLAZER, DENTIST, ENTREPRENEUR (continued from page 37)

Starting early is essential as baby teeth are important to a child’s health and development since they help children learn to chew, speak and smile. Additionally, baby teeth hold spaces for permanent teeth that are developing under their gums. With this in mind, preventive care is the guiding principle of the practice. Dr. Manso refers to establishing this early baseline as a Dental Home. “Children who have a dental home are more likely to receive preventive and routine oral health care throughout their lives,” she says.

To prepare new patients for their first visit, Dr. Manso advises parents to be enthusiastic and to avoid using words, such as: needle, shot, pull, scrape, pain or hurt. To make her patients feel as comfortable as possible, she often suggests they bring along a favorite stuffed animal or doll for the visit. Dr. Manso also recommends parents visit the office website and social media for homecare tips and fun oral health related content to encourage her patients.

At MPDC, new patients receive a cavity risk assessment, oral hygiene instruction and an age-appropriate prevention plan. “Children require different approaches to deal with their behavior, guide their dental growth and development to prevent future dental problems,” says Dr. Manso.

Today, this “Woman in Business” is proud to have planted roots in her community, and to have built a practice that has withstood the challenges of the pandemic. Since childhood development is a tenet of pediatric dentistry, Dr. Manso believes her patients, who age out at 18, should take an active role in their dental health. To help them, she created the Growing Smiles Club that recognizes them for their commitment to the prevention of cavities and gum disease. “The Club gives children a sense of ownership. They are members, a part of the process.” Pediatric dentists are specialists who are required to complete a two-year advanced degree residency in pediatric dentistry that encompasses clinical protocols, child development principles and behavioral guidance. Dr. Manso is a Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry. In addition, the Montclair resident also serves on the Board of Trustees at Hackensack Meridian Health Mountainside Medical Center. As a result of COVID-19, MPDC implemented many new safety measures to better protect patients and staff. Pre-COVID-19, Dr. Manso and her staff enjoyed routinely taking their preventive care message to the community by visiting schools and day care centers, which is a practice she hopes to resume in the future. Dr. Manso is originally from Chicago, and went on to dental school at The University of Michigan School of Dentistry. She completed her specialty training for Pediatric Dentistry at NYU, Langone Hospital in Brooklyn, NY. Her pediatric rotation in dental school is when she first discovered her passion for inspiring young people. That same passion is what drives her today as she balances family, small business ownership, and community involvement.

LIBERTY SCIENCE CENTER PRESENTS

Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood: A Grr-ific Exhibit

T

hrough immersive experiences children ages 2 to 6 collaborate to solve problems, use their imaginations to transform their surroundings and play along with Daniel’s singable strategies as they learn life’s little lessons. The exhibit replicates adventures of four-year-old Daniel and his friends and includes immersive activities such as an Imagination Stage— where kids can put costumes of the beloved characters and step onto the stage to act; The Music Shop—where children can express themselves creatively through unusual instruments; The Post Office—where they can sort, deliver and receive packages and letters; and a Thank You Tree—where visitors can write or draw thank-you notes and put them on the neighborhood tree. “Communication, imagination and exploring one’s emotions are critical to the learning process, especially in this pandemic when many children are being educated either remotely or in a hybrid system and isolated from friends and distant family members,” said LSC President and CEO Paul Hoffman. “That’s why we are thrilled to welcome such a relevant and immersive exhibit.

At the Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood: a Grr-ific Exhibit children can: • Create stories through the Movable Character Mural • Step inside the Clock Factory to play with a variety of clocks • Compose a song or play along with one-of-a-kind instruments • Identify spots in one’s own neighborhood on the interactive world map • Cozy up with a good book in O the Owl’s Reading Nest • Stroll with a Trolley along the path, and ring the bell upon arrival “Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood: A Grr-ific Exhibit” brings to life the themes presented in the PBS series such as community, communication and emotions, which enables young children to understand their feelings and those of their neighbors. Visitors can walk the paths and hear the sounds of Daniel’s world as they encounter the meaning of empathy, gratitude, sharing and diversity in an environment of creative and interactive play. Through music, kids can also sing along with Daniel, work together to solve problems and even experience the contagious nature of kindness. Created by Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh in partnership with The Fred Rogers Company. Liberty Science Center (LSC) is located at Liberty State Park, 222 Jersey City Boulevard, Jersey City. Women’s History Month Allows Us to Honor Remarkable Women of Today and Remember Those That Paved the Way

W

omen’s History Month, which takes place during the whole month of March, is a celebration of women’s contributions to history, culture and society. It has been observed annually in the US since 1987. Celebrating women for a whole month provides us with an opportunity to reflect on the amazing contributions of women like Abigail Addams, Susan B. Anthony, Sojourner Truth, Rosa Parks, Ruth Bader Ginsberg, Kamala Harris and so many other remarkable women who have greatly impacted US history. It also lends itself to honoring and celebrating women making a difference today, locally.

From 1993 until her death in 2020, Ruth Bader Ginsburg was the second female justice, and the first Jewish female justice on the Supreme Court. She provided a strong voice in favor of gender equality, the rights of workers and the separation of church and state.

It wasn’t so long ago that women didn’t have the right to vote, but look at how far women have come since this was attained on August 8, 1920. There is now a woman serving as the Vice President of the US, in the White House. This is an accomplishment that the women who fought for the right to vote could never have dreamed of, yet, through their blood, sweat and tears, they led the way for it to happen. Today, Vice President Kamala Harris is an inspiration to all women, especially to little girls, who have now learned that anything is possible as a woman. It also wasn’t so long ago that women couldn’t go to college, which is something unfathomable to the empowered women of today, who are doctors, lawyers, CEOs, professors, scientists, politicians, and businesswomen. Without the efforts of the strong women who came before us, competing for the same jobs and wages as men would not be achievable today. In fact, according to Biz Journal, “every board of directors in the S&P 500 now has a woman on the board; and, as a result of the 2020 election, women now make up a quarter of all members of the 117th Congress.” Women have also made huge contributions to culture as artists, writers, actors, dancers, chefs, and so much more, leaving their marks on the world through their passions. We study them in school and learning about their set-backs and achievements helps to propel women of today to dream and achieve the impossible.

Kamala Devi Harris is serving as the 49th vice president of the United States. She is not only the first female US vice president, she is also the first African American and first Asian American vice president.

hen Rebecca Mahoney joined family firm Robinwood Kitchens in 2011, she became part of a business that has served Berkeley Heights for 45 years. Her degree in interior design from Syracuse University meant that she could bring new skills and concepts to the company founded by her parents, Robin and Martha Reinhardt. She knew she could use many of the technical aspects of design, such as computer rendering, to enhance the process of envisioning creating a kitchen. She was also well aware she was joining a business whose decades of success were based on trust. Robinwood Kitchens prides itself on doing just what they say they will do. And Rebecca knew that, as a woman designer, she was bringing a distinct female perspective to her creative process. Dr. Gi Gi Paralkar Livingston Family Orthodontics

D

r. Gi Gi Paralkar built Livingston Family Orthodontics from the ground up—creating an intimate, boutique practice. She likes to make sure she spends personal time trying to get to know each patient and family and strives to create a welcoming environment. Paralkar specializes in braces and Invisalign for children as young as seven through adulthood. Several years ago, Dr. Paralkar decided to make a career change and pursue orthodontics, following in her late father’s footsteps. Her road to orthodontics took a lot of hard work, but Paralkar feels as though she’s answered her calling. One of her favorite aspects about her job is seeing her patients’ self confidence change as their smiles are being transformed. Another aspect is the social interaction—including hugs— which she looks forward to once the pandemic is in the past. One thing that stuck out to Paralkar recently was her influence on the younger generation as one of the only females of color practicing orthodontics in her area. Dr. Paralkar’s piece of advice to other women is to trust your intuition: as a female in business, stick to your guns, stay true to what you want and be persistent.

Helping Patients to Deal with Anxiety Due to the Pandemic

C

oping during the ongoing pandemic can seem challenging. Health professionals say it is not uncommon for people to experience both good days and bad days.

“I remind everyone that these days, you’re making up your coping skills as you go,” says Dr. Keith Morgen, Ph.D, LPC, ACS, of Discovery Wellness Center in Morristown. “So it’s OK to have some not-so-great days. That may also mean you need support, whereas before the pandemic, perhaps you were more autonomous. That’s also OK.”

Dr. Morgen advises that, “if you feel distressed, seek out a mental health professional who can help you manage your emotions and thoughts.” Dr. Keith Morgen

In addition, staying connected with supportive family members, friends and colleagues can be beneficial. Dr. Morgen welcomes anyone needing help to call for an appointment or more information about the services provided for individuals and families. To ensure everyone’s safety, virtual appointments by phone or video are available. “We have made it our responsibility and have taken multiple steps to minimize health risks to our staff and clients while still being able to provide for therapeutic needs. The past year shows that every rose comes with thorns. Managing a work-home balance may be harder than ever. Add the challenge of staying healthy, less social interaction and worries about the economy, and stress is probably a constant in many lives. That’s why it’s important to take a step back and unwind. Lock yourself away for 30 minutes of quiet time so you can let those stress endorphins settle down. Read a book, listen to music, meditate or simply be, without interruptions or demands.

Keep up familiar routines. Even if you’re sticking closer to home, skipping your normal beauty routines can throw you off your game. Make it a point to get dressed and ready for a day as if you’re planning to be out and about. Looking your best can translate into feeling your best, and it means you’re ready for a surprise video call or a days-late delivery you weren’t expecting. CLIMB TO THE TOP “Everyone wants to live on top of the mountain, but all the happiness and growth occurs while you’re climbing it.” — Andy Rooney, CBS Barry Farber

C

huck Garcia has a unique background and experience to talk about a climb to the top. He is an Amazon Best Selling Author of “A Climb to the TOP,” a radio host, a professor at Columbia University Graduate School of Engineering, climbed mountains on four continents including Africa’s highest peak (Kilimanjaro) and Europe’s highest peak (Mount Elbrus), and was the 190th employee at Bloomberg as head of sales and a public spokesman traveling to 30 countries with hundreds of speaking engagements,

do to bring my friends and colleagues back to life, it was a catalyst for my own change. Mountain climbing came to me as a result of my own initiative to use the sad and tragic events of 911 to encourage myself to do something in the spirit of these people that I had lost. I decided then and there that I was going to climb a mountain and see if it was something that would speak to me for my own personal change. Exactly one year later I stood on the summit of Mount Rainier and it changed everything I thought about the world and myself.

Barry Farber: How did you get into mountain climbing?

BF: What did you learn from mountain climbing that applies to your professional life and personal life?

Chuck Garcia:I was scheduled to speak on 911 at 3pm in the World Trade Center and never made it into the building. Unfortunately, on my way to the building the tower had collapsed and three of my colleagues from Bloomberg, who were in the building as a result of supporting my speech, never made it out. That caused me to have a moment of incredible selfreflection. While there was nothing I could

CG: It felt like a metaphor for the way that I climbed my own career. As I was ascending or descending the mountains, I was thinking how grateful I was as I went through struggles, hardships and unexpected twists and turns just like a career. However, so much generosity was given and received from everyone on the climbing team all in the service to unify our efforts to achieve our goals. That’s

mountain climbing, that’s career climbing and that’s life. BF: What are three pieces of advice you could give the readers? CG: Given the amount of fear and anxiety that is in the world, my first piece of advice is never ever be afraid to make a mistake but always be afraid of never learning from them. Second, do not strive for perfection but always strive for progress. And my third piece of advice that I have learned myself and from some of the guests on my program is that there is no failure, there is only feedback. Failure is a mindset; feedback is the development of your mindset. BF: What is your definition of success today? CG: Success is when somebody wakes up every morning and recognizes how fortunate they are to do whatever it is they set out to do. BF: What is the greatest piece of advice you received from one of your mentors? CG: Mike Bloomberg once said to me; “Garcia, if you’re not making mistakes you’re not working hard enough.” At that very moment he gave me permission to go out and try and screw things up. He was the one that drove into my head to adjust and adapt and not worry about the mistakes...just get climbing. Adjustments are the difference between mediocrity and achievement. Chuck’s training regimen: Best training for mountain climbing is the C L M B R - a full body cardio and strength fitness machine. I also do strength training 2-3 times per week “Lift heavy things and then put them down” along with boxing and running.
