Alzheimer’s New Jersey to Host Online Workshops for Caregivers
D
uring April and May, Alzheimer’s New Jersey will be hosting free special interactive “Bring Back the Joy” workshops for Alzheimer’s caregivers. The onetime, 90-minute Zoom workshops will cover the benefits of engaging people with dementia through music. Sessions will be facilitated by a registered nurse. CVS Expands COVID Vaccine Sites in NJ; Adds West Orange to the List
T
he CVS Pharmacy in West Orange now offers Covid vaccines. Many CVS Pharmacies were already administering vaccines as part of the Federal Pharmacy Program, receiving doses directly from the U.S. government separate from the New Jersey allocation. In mid-March, the company began receiving shipments of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine. This allowed them to increase the number of administering sites and add West Orange for NJ residents. The shot also helped CVS to increase the number of available appointments too.
United Way is Offering Free Service for Claiming COVID-19 Stimulus Payments
U
nited Way of Northern New Jersey is offering a free, online tax preparation and filing service for low- and moderate-income households needing help in securing coronavirus stimulus payments. The free service is geared to “individuals living paycheck to paycheck, unable to afford life’s necessities.” The service can be accessed at uwnnj.org/freetaxprep. Assistance and online forms are available in both English and Spanish. Qualified taxpayers can receive assistance here for filing the Recovery Rebate Credit if they did not receive the previous two stimulus payments through the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act. According to The United Way, it is important to have 2020 tax returns completed as early as possible because stimulus payments with the third relief package, which is currently underway, are based on 2020 income levels. Individuals with annual incomes of $75,000 or less, will receive $1,400.

New Bald Eagle Exhibit Opens at Turtle Back Zoo
A
new and improved Bald Eagle Exhibit, which was damaged during a storm in 2019, is now open in the Wild New Jersey area at Turtle Back Zoo. Recently, a 4-year-old eagle named Freedom was added to the exhibit. Four years ago, Freedom became entangled in a rope and was discovered hanging upside down in a tree in Minnesota. He would have died if not for the aid of US Army veteran Jason Galvin, who saved him and took him to the University of Minnesota’s Raptor Center, where Freedom has been living and recovering for the last four years. Freedom joins female eagle Adak, who came to Turtle Back Zoo in 1997 from the Bergen County Zoo. A tree in the center of the exhibit provides the eagles with a place to perch, and an accompanying structure provides indoor space to hold the birds if they ever need to be removed from the exhibit area.

Locals are Helping Save Monarch Butterflies from Extinction In order to prevent a decline in the monarch butterfly population, there is a movement in Northern, NJ to plant more pesticide-free milkweed, which is not only a food source for the monarchs, it is also where they lay their eggs. Monarchs play an important role in pollination. Pollinators are responsible for reproduction in 90 percent of the world’s flowering plants and food crops by spreading pollen from flower to flower. Many people in local towns are coming together to help the monarchs in their plight to find more pesticide-free milkweed. In Caldwell, Personette Street is now robust with pollinator gardens and native trees. In Montclair, more than 250 locations are now certified as wildlife habitats. Locals can also join in on the movement by planting milkweed in their yards. Milkweed can be purchased at places like Morgan’s Farm in Cedar Grove, which is also selling the plants online at morgansfarm.org.

Brookdale Park Pollinator Garden
There is butterfly rest stop and restaurant thriving in Brookdale Park. Jean Greely designed the Brookdale Park Pollinator garden in 2018 as part of a Rutgers Environmental Stewards project. It was designed to be a waystation for migrating Monarch Butterflies as well as other butterflies, moths, bees and pollinating insects. An overgrown patch was cleared with the help of The Brookdale Park Conservancy and the Rutgers Master Gardeners. They found milkweed growing wild which is the favorite food of Monarchs. Native plants and shrubs were added to attract more butterflies and pollinators. The garden is located South of the Playground by the overlook. It continues to expand and develop with the Brookdale Conservancy raising funds and providing volunteers. Peek bloom time runs from mid June to early October. If you’re going to visit the garden, don’t forget to stop and see Brookdale’s Rose Garden which features 1,500 rose bushes that showcases more than 100 different varieties of roses. They’ll be blooming about the same time. Find out more about Brookdale Park and these gardens at: brookdalepark.org

Tips for Celebrating EARTH DAY
T
his year marks the 51st annual Earth Day celebration. It is now celebrated in over 193 countries. The themes change yearly, and this year’s theme is Restore Our Earth. Earth Day helps us remember that our connection to nature is essential for our health and well-being. Prior to the pandemic, Earth Day was celebrated with large festivals, parades, races, and more. This year, there are many virtual and masked small group ways to celebrate helping the planet. Here are some ways you can do your part on Earth Day: Reduce, reuse, and recycle. This is a great opportunity to spring clean. Instead of throwing things into landfills, repurpose them by donating to Facebook groups like the Buy Nothing Project, and Free Stuff marketplace groups, or to the needy. Volunteer. There are hundreds of ways to volunteer that can be found online like participating in small, masked group cleanups.
Educate. Educate yourself and others on ways to heal the earth by reading, watching videos and talks. Conserve water. Earth day is the perfect time to intentionally start conserving water while brushing teeth, showering, and watering the lawn. Choose sustainable. If you aren’t already doing so, start using recyclable bags for food shopping and reusing plastic water bottles. Use energy efficient bulbs. By using energy efficient bulbs and turning the lights off when you leave a room, you are helping reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Plant a tree. Trees provide us with food and oxygen and help us combat climate change. Plant a tree in your yard or donate to a place that is planting trees. You will be doing your part to help the planet. Use non-toxic chemicals. By using nontoxic chemicals, you will be helping to send less chemicals into the waterways.
Bike more and drive less. Make Earth Day the day to start putting this practice into motion. You can get your family in on the action by planning family rides. You will be getting some exercise, while decreasing emissions. Save pollinators. The bee and monarch butterfly populations are dwindling. We need these species for the pollination of our fruits and vegetables, not to mention the honey from bees. To do your part, plant friendly habitats for them in your garden like willows, fruit trees, and clover for bees, and pesticide-free milkweed for monarchs to eat and lay eggs on.
We only have one planet, and it is dying. Be the change you want to see in the world, and let your children see how you are making a difference. You will be creating tomorrow’s responsible citizens and leaving them with a healthier place to live. Happy Earth Day!

Conservancy’s Clean Up Verona Park is one of the jewels of the park system. The park’s attractions include a 13-acre lake, boat house with paddleboats, bocce courts, children’s playground and garden, tennis courts and 1.2 mile running path. The iconic stone bridge, seen in so many wedding albums, is currently closed while the county completes a project to refurbish the local landmark. The Verona Park Conservancy is a public non-profit, whose volunteers work with Essex County to help maintain and improve the park and the park’s facilities. Recently volunteers cleared the park of invasive plants. Every year the Verona Park Conservancy sponsors a spring clean up to get the park in shape for a new season. This year the clean up is scheduled for April 17 from 9–11am. The rain date is April 24. For more information about volunteering visit: veronapark.org or their Facebook group. The Grover Cleveland Park runs along the Caldwell–Essex Fells border. Visitors enjoy the park’s nature trails including the newly installed Sound Safari signs that encourage children to experience the sounds of the park. The sports minded find lighted tennis courts, a baseball diamond, shuffleboard and bocce courts. Kids make good use of the playground and spend time watching ducks and turtles in Pine Brook Creek and Pond. The Grover Cleveland Park Conservancy is calling for volunteers to help with their spring cleanup on April 17 from 9am–noon. They are asking volunteers to register their groups by phone: 862-505-2243 or e-mail: gpc2001@gmail.com. Individuals can join up at the playground.

The group is raising funds and awareness to support proposed projects that include upgrading the park’s lighting, replacing lost trees and planting more native trees and shrubs. They hope to include a dog park as part of their plans. The Conservancy has scheduled a clean up for April 17 from 9am–1pm. Friday Night Pizza – IN THE CALDWELLS —
Feeds Hundreds
A
ngela DiSciascio Gregg of Pine Brook has come up with a novel way to help the food insensitive via a program she started called Friday Night Pizza, where people can both request and sponsor pizzas. The other goal is to support local pizzerias in the Caldwells. She hopes the idea catches on and that other towns start doing it too. It all began one night at the start of March 2021, when after sending a pizza to a friend, Angela, and her husband Glenn, realized that “others in need might also enjoy receiving a warm pizza and having a relaxing night in with family.”
Angela posted her idea on a local Caldwells Facebook page thinking she would organize it once; however, it snowballed, and now she is organizing meals every Friday night. Large families can order more than one pie. By mid-March, 90 families received warm meals, with 180 sponsors signed up to help. Angela expects the numbers to continue growing weekly. Angela’s friend, Aaren Picciuto, created a Facebook page called @familypizzanight and separate forms to be filled out by recipients and sponsors.
“Sometimes, people are too shy to ask for help,” says Angela. “To keep it anonymous, those sponsoring or receiving never know one another’s names.” Angela does not handle any money. She simply pairs sponsors and recipients, and coordinates orders and payments with them and the restaurants. “Coordinating this takes a lot of work, but is so worth it,” says Angela, who works daily in sales. Angela’s inbox has been flooded with touching letters of gratitude. She says, “It is one thing to know you are doing good, but to see the result is amazing.”

Movement Brings Smiles During Period of Uncertainty
S
ince August 2020, locals have been receiving anonymous vases of flowers on their doorsteps. At first, it was a mystery, but now most people know Christy Sanborn, the founder of the #sharinglovethruflowers movement, or her daughter, Leena Evans, put them there. The goal is to make people smile. Christy says, “I love being around flowers because they are so beautiful. They are pure love.” Since starting, Christy has delivered over 400 bouquets. People are nominated via sharinglovethruflowers.com. She never says, “No.” If the recipient is not within driving distance, she sends flowers via 1-800-Flowers.
When the pandemic hit and people were cooped up, Christy says she began handling around 40-50 deliveries a week. “It felt great to know I was making people happy at a time when there was so much uncertainty. People needed hope. They still do.” Christy never asks for money; however, some people donate via Venmo, or offer to let her pick flowers from their gardens. She also buys flowers at Farmers Markets. No one is allowed to pay for what they send; rather, donations go into a pool for future flowers. Vases arrive with Christy's contact information, but recipients never know who sent them. People donate vases too.
FOUR TIME WINNER!
Creating the arrangements herself has led to Christy’s decision to open up a florist shop in Livingston next year, where for every bouquet purchased, one will be paid forward. Christy, a hair stylist and inspirational guidance coach, is living her best life, by making others smile.

Quite simply:
this is one of those dining rooms you must visit. The original efforts that come out of Chef James DeSisto’s kitchen reflect Italian, French, and New American influences and are created with the best ingredients he’s able to find. Only top quality local produce, sustainable seafood, and all house-made pasta are used. Featured here are Day Boat Scallops which are seared and nestled in a cauliflower puree, with chive oil, lemon zest and micro herbs. This, like all of his efforts are very creative, and very good tasting.

any of the curated gifts at Smith & Company have a story to tell – including The Grace Effect candles that are sold there. The brand was created by Katie and Tom Driscoll in honor of their daughter, Grace, who was born with Down Syndrome. The company wants to “share Grace’s light with the world.” “Building a brand that brings joy to your home is our top priority,” says Katie. “Building a brand that will light the future of our daughter with Down Syndrome is our dream.” Lisa Smith, who owns Smith & Company, says The Grace Effect’s message resonates strongly with her because her baby sister, Marilyn, who passed away as an infant, was born with Down Syndrome. “She is our guardian Angel,” says Lisa. When Lisa read the Driscoll’s story, she “had immediate heart strings.” She also liked that it was an inclusive brand, selling 100 percent toxin-free candles. “I am so proud to partner with this amazing mother/daughter combo and their company,” says Lisa, who especially loves knowing that Grace, who is an integral part of the company, personally “touches all of the candle orders during curation and shipping.” According to her parents, Grace is a hard worker who loves performing tasks she can complete by herself. They feel it is important to show the world that although Grace has a disability, she doesn’t let it stop her. “Her accomplishments not only make the family proud – they make Grace feel proud too,” says Katie, who also has five sons.
Grace Driscoll
Katie and Tom say they knew from the moment Grace was born that the world would not value her life like they would. So, they decided “to change perceptions and give Grace the opportunity to prove herself.”

Katie says, “None of us can imagine having to prove ourselves in every situation life gives us. Grace and her community can. Their disability reads on their faces. Asking people to value our daughter was never an option. We knew the right people would be attracted by her and this has been proven many times over.” The family says that Grace is the heart of the brand and the reason they are building it. “It is because of Grace and her light that the company has been able to grow into over 15 retail locations and send out over 6,000 candles in its first year,” says Katie. Smith & Company prides itself on selling gifts that make a difference. The store emits a feeling of an old-fashioned gift shop, with a twist – it carries all the trends of today. No matter what types of gift you are looking for, you can successfully find a suitable one at Smith & Company.

Major Home Electrical Hazards to Watch For Photo by Dan Epstein
T
he job of an electrician is more than helping keep lights on in homes and the TV running. It’s more than putting in new light fixtures and setting up smart home systems. One of the critical jobs of the electrician is safety. Many of the electrical repairs in Montclair, NJ that our licensed team handles help to prevent electrical fires, high voltage shocks, and other dangers. Below is a list of common electrical hazards in your house and how you can avoid them:
Wiring And Cords In Bad Shape This applies both to wires you can and cannot see. We recommend checking on all exposed wiring and cords in your home to see if any are brittle, fraying, or worn. Loss of insulation around wiring and cords is a quick way to create fire hazards. For older wiring, you’ll need an electrician on the job. Watch for signs of discoloration on walls, outlets, and switches that can warn of bad wiring.
Hiding Cords And Wiring You probably understand that leaving cords and wires out on the floor is a tripping hazard. But the answer isn’t to run these wires and cords under rugs and furniture. When these wires heat up, they 26
Suburban Essex
may create fires. Ask for an electrician to handle the wiring to keep it hidden and safe.
Unsafe Outlets In The Bathroom And Kitchen Water is a huge danger with electricity, and you probably already know this. This makes electrical appliances in the bathroom and kitchen potential hazards. To increase safety in these rooms, have electricians replaced older outlets with GFCI outlets (they have dual buttons between the two outlets). These outlets are designed to cut off power to anything plugged into them if electricity begins to flow into the ground—i.e. through a person.
Water On An Electrical Fire When an electrical fire starts, your first instinct may be to throw water on it. This may not work and might even make the fire larger as the electricity uses the water as a conduit. Make sure you know where the fire extinguisher is and how to use it. The foam from the extinguisher will safely put out the fire.
Extension Cords Thankfully, extension cords aren’t used April 2021
as much as they once were because new homes have a larger number of outlets. They are major contributors to house fires and can easily overload outlets. (Plus there’s that tripping hazard again.) If you’re still trapped using extension cords in your house, arrange with our electricians to put in extra outlets.
Wet Hands It’s easy to forget that you should never handle electrical appliances or plug anything into a wall socket when you have wet hands. Wet hands are one of the top causes for high voltage shocks in a home. We can’t stress this enough: when you need assistance with your home’s electrical system, don’t attempt to do the work yourself. This is the biggest electrical hazard of all. Please call our electricians and let them do the work safely and correctly. Creating Beautiful and Functional Spaces for the Home
T
hroughout this past year many people have been working from home, and it seems that is a trend that will continue well into the future. Also, many children still have not gone back into the classroom and as we saw this Winter, snow days may be a thing of the past. With families spending more time at home now there is even more interest in making every room in the home not only comfortable, but also a functional space for every member of the family. Built-in desk cabinets, spa bathrooms, and a new kitchen are of course what you think of for home renovations. But now more than ever, more thought is going into the technology and functionality of those things. Charging drawers with outlets and USB plugs are becoming increasingly popular to keep electronics charged and organized. Working from home requires a private space but many people may not be willing to give up that spare bedroom, and they also don’t want a bed in the background of their Zoom call. Vertical wall beds give the flexibility of keeping a spare bed readily available with the freedom to use the room as a work space. Bathrooms have turned into spa rooms with deep soaking tubs being one of the most requested products. Steam showers are gaining steam in the shower, especially when combined with chromotherapy and aromatherapy options. Heated tile floors are also desirable for their added comfort during colder months. Showcase can help you create beautiful and functional spaces for your home. Our showroom is currently open by appointment so call in advance to make an appointment with one of our expert designers either at your home or in our showroom.

Making Dreams Come True for More Than 50 Years By Cynthia Burns
S
pring is the ideal time to add an addition or sunroom to a home says Steve Gargiulo. The second-generation owner of Gargiulo Builders says adding a level or expanding over the garage gains square footage and changes the appearance and architectural style of a home. “Building within the existing envelope of the house is more economical than moving,” he notes. Another popular renovation is adding a sunroom. “We bring the outside in for clients to enjoy. We construct the sunroom so that it looks like part of the architecture of your home.” Gargiulo Builders is a full-service building and remodeling company that oversees the management and construction of all projects. “We have been in business for more than 50 years,” says Gargiulo. “Our longevity is a testament to the level of service and quality you will get when you choose us for your project.” Gargiulo is eager to help clients build their dreams.

Sewer Line Problem? Don’t Panic
The Yard of Your Dreams
Martin Contracting Gets to the Root of the Problem
Team SportsTurf Makes Virtual Design Real
By Janis Hashe
By Janis Hashe
I
T
f you have a sewer line problem, of course it must be addressed. But it may not be an emergency, said John Martin, Project Manager at Verona’s Martin Contracting, a local property improvement contractor. Usually, the problem is build-up in the line, often the result of tree root infiltration, Martin explained. When he gets a phone call for a sewer line replacement, he first advises the caller to contact one of the drain-clearing companies he works with. Many times, that is all they need. But if it isn’t, Martin Contracting can simply do a repair for a clogged point or replace the entire line outside the house. “The majority of the time the problem is tree-related, and we replace the line from the curb to the house, or, if needed, we replace or repair the line in the street,” stated Martin.
he magic of digital imaging now makes it possible for homeowners to see a virtual depiction of what their new landscaping will look like right away—and they love it, said Steven Poto, owner of Team SportsTurf, LLC. On the initial free consultation, Poto takes photos of the client’s home and yard, and talks with them about what they want and need. This includes what plants and materials will work best in the situation. From there, he creates a digital design. “We can manipulate the design based on the client’s comments,” Poto said. Eventually, the homeowner will see a picture that is almost identical to what the final landscaping will look like.
The goal is ensuring the client pays only for what is needed— and doing the job well.
Most of the time, Poto said, there is no charge until the client signs off on the final design. “This is really a new way for them to see their property,” he stated. “They enjoy it a lot.”

With their stores in Green Brook (at Fabricland) and Paramus (formerly Nassaus), Metropolitan is NJ’s largest independent retailer of custom window fashions. Bruce Heyman, whose grandfather started the business in Plainfield in 1934, commented on the new location. “Even though we offer a shop-at-home service, many customers prefer to visit our showrooms to see full-size displays. Our Paramus store serves customers in Bergen and Passaic counties and our Green Brook location serves Somerset, Middlesex and Union. We have always served customers in this area, but we wanted a location closer to our customers in Essex and Morris counties to make it more convenient for them to visit us.” Metropolitan’s stores display beautiful fabrics and custom window fashions of all styles. Features to Consider Before Installing
YOUR DREAM POOL
Y
ou are about to have your dream come true…a swimming pool in your own backyard. While you could install a basic pool, there are certain features you might want to consider adding on before the building (and budget) begins. KMF Companies shares some of the most popular features that clients are adding to their pools.
Spas There are many choices when it comes to spas. For instance, an integrated spa design is where the spa is located inside the swimming pool and appears to be part of the pool’s overall shape. With an attached spa it is constructed outside or adjacent to the pool. Unlike an integrated spa, the pool and spa appear as separate entities. Another option is an attached raised spa that is elevated above the pool. A spa can be built into a corner, side, or end of the pool, depending on the pool shape and location of utilities.
Waterfall and Water Features Lighting Pool lights add a dramatic dimension to your pool and the surrounding outdoor area. By lighting up the pool and generating a glow about the water, swimming pool lighting creates a distinct ambiance. The proper pool lighting can increase the overall appearance of your backyard. When it comes to pool lighting, be sure to have more than one light feature, and keep in mind that the pool interior liner color will affect any light feature you choose.
Sun Shelves A sun shelf is a flat, shallow area in your pool, that acts as an entry point and can span its full or partial width. Sun shelfs are typically around 5-8 inches deep, and should be just deep enough for you to be in the water without having to swim or float. Sun shelves are perfect if you plan to have in-pool furniture or if you'll have small children or pets in the water.
April 2021
Waterfalls create an oasis in your backyard, and they also provide an element of sound that can really bring life to your pool. Traditional pool waterfalls are built out of stones and boulders for an all-natural look and feel. Waterfalls can be crafted to pretty much any design. You can have a single stream, multiple streams converging, or even multiple waterfalls designed around your pool. In addition to a waterfalls, other water features to consider are are fountains, water walls, bubblers, jets, rain curtains, sheer descents, and even more. Regardless of which water features you choose, they can all add some character and unique personality to your dream pool.

Gift Giving Simplified…
Up, Up and Away! Balloons Bring Cheer to Local Seniors Cynthia Burns
R
oseann DeFalco floated a trial balloon that became a float away success. The owner of The Balloon Boss in Fairfield created ‘Valentine’s Day Balloon Buddy’ to help bring cheer to residents of a West Caldwell Care Center. The details were simple: participants sponsor a senior for $20 and DeFalco would design and deliver a Valentine’s Day balloon arrangement to a Center resident. After learning of DeFalco’s ambitions, Louis Mauriello, owner of Champion Waste Removal, his wife Michell, and son Marco made it their mission to provide an arrangement to all residents of a West Caldwell facility. Mauriello launched ‘Adopt a Senior’ on his personal and business social media accounts and the donations soared. Mauriello was pulled to this idea when remembering this from his childhood: “My mother was a registered nurse and, when I was younger, instead of wanting a Mother’s Day gift, she would ask me and my siblings (two brothers and a sister) to go with her to visit the residents in the nursing home where she worked.” He involved his son Marco because he wanted to instill his mother’s idea of respect for elders, especially during this time of COVID. Mauriello stated, “Many have helped me on my journey, and I have the desire to pay it forward.” DeFalco also uses the phrase. Her 13-year-old granddaughter helped make the arrangements and her nine-year-old grandson assisted with the deliveries. “In such a horrible time it meant so much to pay it forward,” she says. More than 400 residents at four senior care centers received a pleasant surprise on Valentine’s Day.

Update Your Outdoor Living Decor By Sue Baldani
N
ow that warmer weather is upon us, it’s time to move from the indoors to out. Paula Markman, an interior designer with Decorating Den, gives us tips on trendy outdoor decorating.
• For lighting, ceiling fans with attached light fixtures are popular and also serve double duty. • Use materials that are durable, such as teak wood, iron, and aluminum. Performance fabrics, which can withstand the elements and are stain resistant, are now in high demand.
“For a porch, first look at functional needs,” she says. “How many people are you looking to seat? How do you intend to use the space? Would it be for socializing, dining or just a place to read a book?” • For furnishings, sectional sofas are great since you can fit more people. And multipurpose pieces are trending, such as ottomans that function as both tables and seating. • Adding a rug to a porch can give the space a warmer feel and finished look. Also consider window treatments – roll-up shades will block out the sun and mylar screen shades will keep out bugs.
• In the yard, place an outdoor bench or garden stools to create groups of seating for socializing. Stools can also be used as small tables. Creating a living area outside is an easy and inexpensive way to add another room onto your house. It can be a place to relax, socialize with family and friends, or sit with your laptop to work or learn in the fresh air.

Colorful Spring Landscaping S
pring landscaping brings the life back to your lawn and positions your home to stand apart. Creating a colorful design in your landscape can be therapeutic and fun. The original designs you make should complement your personal style and the design of your home.
Design a Planting Scheme Some might say color therapy is best administered through flowers – we agree. Utilize specific color patterns for eye-catching allure. Create drama and curb appeal with the right design scheme. Use one of the following color harmonies to get started: MONOCHROMATIC: one color in a variety of shades; blend textures and sizes to create interest. COMPLEMENTARY: two colors opposite on the color wheel; blue and orange or red and green. ANALOGOUS: three neighboring colors on the color wheel; yellow, orange, red are the most used.
Pick Your Plants When choosing plants for your landscape think about the amount of maintenance you are willing to do. Native plants will help keep maintenance low. Add plants and flowers that are fragrant and colorful near the entrance of your home. Plants such as Orange Marigolds or Purple Vanilla-Scented Heliotrope are great options for NJ landscapes. 46

Other spring flowers that will brighten up your landscape include Lilacs, Korean Spice Viburnum, Daphne Plants, Peonies, Bearded Irises, Lily-of-the-Valley, and English Lavender. As a bonus, attract butterflies and hummingbirds with Aster, Butterfly Bush, Lilac, Globe Thistle, Zinnia, Larkspur, Foxglove Lily, Verbena and Scarlet Trumpet Honeysuckle. Soften the edges of your landscape design with arching or cascading plants that will conceal unsightly issues or electrical boxes. Include an arbor or pergola in your design to increase your outdoor living area’s shade and privacy. Add coffee or tea grinds to your soil to alter the color and frequency of your blooms. This will also deter deer from eating your plants. To keep mosquitos away, plant Scented Geranium for its lemon scent. Attract butterflies and hummingbirds with Aster, Butterfly Bush, Lilac, Globe Thistle, Zinnia, Larkspur, Foxglove Lily, Verbena and Scarlet Trumpet Honeysuckle.
For some homeowners, an interesting way to draw the eye to a specific area is by adding oversized plants. Plants such as Elephant’s Ear can bring a large dose of drama and an intense impact. I
t was a decorating double-header. This lovely Montclair home had two living rooms. The homeowners decided that the wife gets one and the husband gets the other. It gave Valerie Ruddy Designs the chance, twice over, to design rooms to fit two distinctly different styles, one to fit each homeowner. Here’s what they created for the wife. What once was the play zone for the kids is now a lovely feminine getaway to relax in at the end of a long day. This beautiful living space has a very feminine vibe and is all about the client surrounding herself with family photos and cozy, pretty things. They refaced the fireplace in beautiful marble tile and found a gorgeous slab of marble to replace the tiled hearth. The wife loves it and so do we. Retractable Awnings Provide Many Benefits By Jackie Schatell
R
emember last summer when you gathered with family and friends to spend some socially distanced time together in your backyard? Do you recall wishing you had more shade to protect your guests and yourself from the searing sun? If so, you are in luck because there is still time to add that much-needed shade to your decks and patios with retractable awnings. But, keep in mind that the process takes time. Now is the perfect time to get an appointment with an awning expert on the books. This year, your backyard will once again be the most popular “room” in your home, and Window Works, in Livingston, has many wonderful custom options for you to choose from including solar screen shades, retractable screens, and all types of awnings including retractable awnings. Awnings can make it feel up to 20 degrees cooler underneath, which will help make those backyard barbecues and summer afternoon get-togethers even more enjoyable. They also provide

added sun protection by blocking out about 99% of harmful UV rays and prevent the fading of indoor rugs, drapes, and furniture, in areas where the sun hits windows. Today’s motorized awnings can also be programmed to retract and extend at certain times of day, and when it is windy. Another benefit they offer is helping to lower air conditioning costs in the summer. It is important to find the best location for your awning, Window Works will help you make these decisions and more. Their expert awning specialists will come to your home, wearing masks, to help you select the best awning for your needs based on your preferred seating, coverage area and the function of your outdoor space. They will take measurements, determine where and how to install your awning and show you fabric samples. You can rest assured all details will be taken care of, including expert installation by their seasoned team of installers.

something new...mind-boggling architectural designs; life-like “people” laying in the grass; and even a lakeside table where you can “savour” a glass of sculpted wine. Snap photos posing with statues or walking underneath glorious arches. Each work will make you feel as though the art has come to life...for you to interact with! Art is not the only attraction at Grounds For Sculpture. The beauty of nature is the backdrop to every sculpture, adding something special to not only your photos but your entire experience. Wander along manicured paths lined with exotic trees and flowers. Take a walk through a meadow to not only catch a glimpse of an artist’s creation but to smell the wildflowers. Over 2,000 trees have been planted across the property along with a variety of colorful flowers and other plants. Other unmissable sights include a pond and elegant reflecting pools; natural woodlands; bamboo groves; and themed gardens.
Bruce Beasley, ‘Arpeggio III’, 2005
Founded by artist and philanthropist Seward Johnson, Grounds for Sculpture was designed with the purpose of displaying artwork within a serene landscape. Since opening in 1992, it has been committed to exhibiting the work of contemporary sculptures and making the sculptural arts and nature accessible to all. The Grounds for Sculpture “journey” is one that is all about individual discovery. Visitors selfdirect their experience by exploring the grounds on their own, connecting with all that is around you. Guests are encouraged to respectfully touch and interact with the outdoor works, giving you the opportunity to truly discover the art and find meaning based on your own perception.
Combining the wonder of sculptural art and the serenity of nature, Grounds for Sculpture is unlike anywhere you have been. Filled with unforgettable sights, you could wander the grounds for hours and still have more left to see! This day trip destination is truly an ongoing journey that you will want to come back to time and again to keep exploring.

What Should I Know About COLON CANCER? Prevention, New Treatments and Even Potential Cures are Available.
C
olon cancer, often called colorectal cancer, is the third most common cancer detected in both men and women in the U.S., and the third leading cause of cancer-related deaths. Yet colon cancer, unlike other cancers, can actually be prevented through regular screening. “Awareness is the key,” says James Orsini, MD, Director of Medical Oncology at Clara Maass Medical Center. He explains:
Who needs to be screened for colon cancer? The recommendation from the American Society of Clinical Oncology is that everyone should begin colorectal cancer screening at age 50. However, people at higher risk should be screened earlier. Higher-risk groups include people with a family history of colon cancer, especially in your immediate family, and people with a history of IBD (irritable bowel disease). Talk with your doctor to determine if you are in a high-risk group.
How can colon cancer be prevented? Lifestyle factors may contribute to an increased risk, but they can be modified. These factors include lack of regular physical activity, a diet low in fruits and vegetables and high in processed meats and fat, alcohol consumption, and tobacco use. For prevention, a colonoscopy—a type of screening that allows the doctor to use a lighted tube to view the rectum and colon while the patient is sedated—can detect lumps of cells called polyps that may turn into cancer. These polyps can be removed during the colonoscopy.
Why do some people put off getting a colonoscopy? The night before a colonoscopy, you have to drink a certain amount of fluids with medications that cause diarrhea in order to cleanse your colon thoroughly. Many people are fearful of this. In an older person, the process may be harder because they may get dehydrated. Certain medical problems may also make colonoscopy preparation more difficult. For those cases, there are other screening options to try first, including tests of stools (fecal matter) to look for signs of colon cancer, and what’s known as a “virtual colonoscopy,” which is like having an X-ray. If any of these tests are suggestive of colon cancer, then a colonoscopy will be necessary. A colonoscopy is the gold standard for screening for colon cancer.
James Orsini, Sr. Director of Medical Oncology, Clara Maass Medical Center, a facility of RWJBarnabas Health
What happens if colon cancer is found? Today, treatments for colon cancer offer a chance for significantly prolonging a patient’s life, or even a cure. In fact, 50 percent of individuals who undergo surgery by a specialist— an oncological cancer surgeon—are cured. Surgery is often followed by systemic chemotherapy. In a small percentage of patients with colon cancer, innovative therapies, such as immune therapy, have been considered when patients relapse. We can actually target these therapies by testing for specific markers that enable us to establish which treatment is best suited for that individual. We’re seeing some remarkable responses to advanced colon cancer with combined immune therapies. So we’re extremely optimistic about the future treatment of colon cancer.
What message do you want people to get about colon cancer? It all starts with awareness. Anyone can develop colon cancer. Unexplained weight loss or stomach pain that doesn’t go away could be signs. If you have rectal bleeding, don’t ignore it or assume it’s a hemorrhoid. Reach out to your primary care physician and find out the next best steps to protect yourself.
RWJBarnabas Health and Clara Maass Medical Center, in partnership with Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey—the state’s only National Cancer Institute-Designated Comprehensive Cancer Center— provides close-to-home access to the most advanced treatment options. North Caldwell Boy’s Cereal Challenge to Combat Usher Syndrome Goes Viral
W
e all remember when the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge went viral. We made videos of ourselves dumping ice over our heads and tagged our friends and family members to take the challenge next. It worked! The challenge raised $115 million for the ALS Association, along with millions more for other ALS charities. Well, get ready for the Cereal Challenge, which was started by Zachary Root, 9, of North Caldwell, who has Usher syndrome type 1F—and loves cereal. The goal of the challenge is to raise money to cure Usher 1F. In mid-March, just four weeks from the start of the challenge, $130,000 was raised. Donations can be made at Usher1f.org/cereal-challenge.html.
The challenge is to record yourself making a bowl of cereal blindfolded and share it on social media with friends and family, using:
#Usher1FCerealChallenge
The challenge is to record yourself making a bowl of cereal blindfolded and share it on social media with friends and family, using #Usher1FCerealChallenge. You then nominate someone to take the challenge next and the process is repeated. It is designed to show people the struggles that will be facing Zachary, who was born deaf, is night blind, and is losing his vision.
“Jared and I will stop at nothing until there is a cure to stop our son from going blind.” —Rachel Root Usher syndrome is a rare inherited genetic disorder that causes profound hearing loss due to an impaired ability of the inner ear and auditory nerves to transmit sensory (sound) input to the brain. It is accompanied by retinitis pigmentosa, a disorder that affects the retina and causes progressive loss of vision that begins in adolescence. Zachary’s mom, Rachel Root, explains that Usher syndrome “is the leading cause of deaf-blindness.” Her son, who was fitted with Cochlear implants to help him hear, before the age of one, is losing his sight. After witnessing Zachary’s enthusiasm, it is not hard to catch the Cereal Challenge fever. “Please do the challenge and help me raise money for Usher 1F, thank you,” exclaims Zachary. In fact, it was Zachary’s enthusiastic and engaging spirit that caught the attention of Kelloggs. The company created an image for use in social media of the Rice Krispies box showing Snap, Crackle and Pop donning blindfolds while making a bowl of cereal. Zachary also caught the eye of Post, which created a personalized box of Fruity Pebbles, boasting Zachary’s name. Both companies are using these

Rachel and her husband, Jared, are very active in the parent-driven Usher 1F Collaborative, which to date, has raised $4M in eight years to find a cure. It funds eight researchers. “As a parent, to experience all of the developments being made, is amazing,” says Rachel. “When the researchers need equipment, we buy it for them. It is incredible to actually see the money we have raised be put to good use.”

Simple Self-Care Tips You’ll Love
W
hen easing into a new year, many experts encourage more self-care. From paying attention to your mental health to pampering yourself from head to toe, now is the perfect time to start showing yourself a little extra love. Make time to decompress. The past year shows that every rose comes with thorns, like working from home or legitimately needing to shop online. Managing a work-home balance may be harder than ever and late deliveries can make those online orders a real headache. Add the challenge of staying healthy, less social interaction and worries about the economy, and stress is probably a constant in many lives. That’s why it’s important to take a step back and unwind. Lock yourself away for 30 minutes of quiet time so you can let those stress endorphins settle down. Read a book, listen to music, meditate or simply be, without interruptions or demands.

WE HEALTHCARE
Keep up familiar routines. Even if you’re sticking closer to home, skipping your normal beauty routines can throw you off your game. Make it a point to get dressed and ready for a day as if you’re planning to be out and about. Looking your best can translate into feeling your best, and it means you’re ready for a surprise video call or a days-late delivery you weren’t expecting.
Give special care to your “sole-mates.” They may not be at the top of your beauty regime, but your feet are the toughest, hardest-working part of your body. Because they take you everywhere, when you show your feet the love they deserve, it shows, and can help you feel better literally from head to toe.
What our patients are saying… “Caring and amazing at what they do”, “They always fix me up”, “Some of the most knowledgeable people I’ve every encountered… also some of the nicest guys”
Maintain social connections. Nurturing relationships can be an important aspect of self-care. Regular contact with loved ones, even if it’s just by text, phone or video, can help curb loneliness, reduce boredom and lift your spirits.
Physical Therapy • Chiropractic • OT/Hand Therapy Acupuncture • Sports & Medical Massage • Diet/Nutrition Orthopedic Pain Management
Set goals and start chasing them. If you feel like time is standing still, you are not alone. However, setting goals and working toward them can help you feel more productive and accomplished. You may be surprised what you can achieve, from starting a new fitness routine or learning a new language to finally organizing an overrun closet.

Q & A WITH DR. GLENN P. SORRENTINO
Solutions to Prevent and Reverse Pain from Tech Neck, Poor Posture Photo by Dan Epstein
T
ech neck and poor posture inhibit your body from functioning at maximum potential. Dr. Glenn P. Sorrentino of NJ Spine & Joint in Cedar Grove discusses how to avoid postural pitfalls and reverse the damage from these imbalances.
What is tech neck? Tech neck is the term used to describe the condition caused by repeatedly looking down at your phone or tablet, or stretching your head forward to look at your computer screen. Tech neck and poor posture can result in pain, tightness and poor health.
What are some of the symptoms caused by tech neck and posture problems? Neck, back and shoulder pain; headaches and migraines; numbness and tingling in the arms, hands, legs and feet; tiredness and fatigue; lightheadedness, dizziness and vertigo; anxiety and stress.
So the problems can be serious? Yes. Tech neck and poor posture cause misalignments in your body, preventing your muscles, joints and ligaments from working properly. This can lead to spinal degeneration and arthritis of the spine. Forward-head posture also decreases lung capacity, disrupts blood pressure and can affect the heart.
Who can be afflicted with tech neck and poor posture? These problems can affect all ages, from young children to senior citizens. Children and adults are spending considerable amounts of time on their devices and not paying attention to their poor posture habits.
What does this mean for children and teens in their developing years? We’re seeing more and more teens with rounded shoulders, neck tightness and fatigue. It’s important for all ages to be checked, particularly young people between the ages of 12 to 18, to make sure they do not develop degeneration of the spine.
How can any damage be reversed? At NJ Spine & Joint, we have very effective treatment protocols, including state-of-the-art technologies, that reverse the effects and relieve the pain caused by these conditions. A digital x-ray can show what is structurally causing the poor posture and rounded shoulders. You can call us to schedule a complimentary consultation.
Can tech neck and poor posture be prevented? Once you drop your chin, your neck is under stress. In every activity, keep your chin parallel to the ground or a little upward. Hold your phone up so you are not constantly looking down. Arrange your computer station so that you are looking either straight ahead or a little bit up. When using a laptop or tablet, bring the device up by placing a pillow or cushion on your lap, or use a lap desk or a countertop.
Any other helpful tips? Take tech breaks during the day. Stand up for a few minutes. Go for a short walk or do some stretches. Doing these things will maximize blood and nerve flow from the neck to the brain, which will improve your concentration, energy and productivity. You’ll not only feel better, you’ll look better too. NJ Spine & Joint is a multi-specialty center providing stateof-the-art laser therapy, NormaTec recovery system, physical therapy, chiropractic, medical massage, PRP therapy, joint injections, trigger point injections, custom orthotics and digital x-ray. Best of Essex gold medal multi-time winner.

Diamond Minds
STEP AWAY
T
hroughout my life I’ve always believed that most projects come to fruition through an ongoing act of tenacity and persistence backed by enthusiasm and deep seeded belief. Pretty hard not to succeed with that attitude coupled with a tough skin to come back and not give up after continuous setbacks and rejection. But there comes a time when you need to step away from a situation to see clearly and learn what really matters. I’ve seen many people, including myself, keep going after something and start to do more negative damage than positive progress going forward. Here are some thoughts on this subject: 1.
Totally step away from the activity or project you’re working on. Either go on to something else or just take a clean break. Sometimes complete stillness can bring about true breakthroughs. Even though it goes against taking action, (which many times solves the problem) it in of itself is an action. Many years ago I wrote about how still waters run deep. The fact that all the silt is whirling around in the stream makes it hard to see clearly. It’s the same with our mind. Once we sit still and meditate or just breathe without thinking our mind starts to settle and our path becomes clear.
2.
Get to the heart of the matter. I ask myself if I’m on a path with heart? Is it something that has true benefits to the people I’m serving and myself. You have to believe that there is value in what you’re working on or it becomes very difficult to maintain focus.
3.
Unconventional wisdom. There is a great advantage from taking action that all the research and learning can’t compare with. Sometimes doing the opposite of what is expected or what the norm is allows you to move to another level. It helped me get on QVC when they said pens don’t sell well on QVC...then I said I would walk home from Pennsylvania if it didn’t sell out. Over 30 publishers rejected my clients book because they said skateboarders don’t read. My client
had a very unconventional approach to his craft. They never understood the value of a 10 time world champion skateboarder who doesn’t Barry Farber drink, doesn’t do drugs, no tattoos and gives out his signed skateboard to the first kid who shows him their library card at a contest or event. Well, one publisher understood that value. 4.
Seek out qualified mentors to get a new and unique view on the situation. Over the years I’ve reached out to many different mentors who have a unique take on life and work. It always has tremendous benefits to hear their thoughts and recommendations. Sometimes people feel like they don’t want to bother anyone when asking for advice. But it actually makes people feel important and they appreciate the opportunity to advise.
“Confidence without clarity is always a disaster.” — Isha Sadhguru
We live in a complicated world where information overload and bad news bombards us everyday. The ability to take a step back and intelligently evaluate our environment and simplify our actions with the above points can help us move into a better place. Stepping away from it all may provide the clarity needed to come back with more strategic and meaningful action.
