The virtual event, which honored Kelly Marx for his 60 years of service to the agency’s Board as well as the healthcare heroes who worked at the agency’s group homes through the pandemic, raised more than $1 million to support the agency’s programs. Pillar Care Continuum provides a wide range of services to infants, children and adults with more than 100 different disabilities and diagnoses by supporting personal growth, independence and participation in the community. “We are thankful to have the ongoing support of the Livingston community and leaders like Al Anthony,” said Clark Machemer, Chair of Pillar Care’s Board of Trustees and one of the co-chairs for the fundraising event. “The pandemic has made this an extremely challenging year for all charities and the proceeds from this event will do a great deal to help us begin to rebuild and continue to meet the needs of those with disabilities.”

Teaming Up for REAL ESTATE Success

R

ob Van Der Wende and Alexa Benavente have teamed up at Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Van Der Wende Properties and have become a true force in the local real estate marketplace. Recently they shared some insights with Suburban Essex Magazine into why their team is a success.

Alexa Benavente and Rob Van Der Wende

Why should buyers seek you out? When team Rob and Alexa represent buyers, we are very aggressive in getting our client’s offers accepted. Today’s market can be competitive, and we have been getting a high average of accepted offers. As a team we enjoy coaching our buyer clients on what to do, when to do it and how to WIN their dream home. Every client has our utmost attention at all times. It is never a bad time to speak, we are always available, and we work for our clients’ best interests. By always being accessible, we aim to have clients feel as if they are our only client.

How does your partnership benefit a potential listing customer?

At the root of team Rob and Alexa, we truly want to help people. We strive to make a difference in people’s lives, case by case—there is no one size fits all. As a team we listen and adapt to each client’s individual needs, concerns and create goals tailored to each client. We strive to make our clients’ properties STAND OUT. We are very aggressive with our marketing campaigns, and do not just simply place homes on the market and hope it sells. Our goal as a team is to bring in the highest number of qualified buyers. We want to make sure we not only obtain the highest price for their home but also give them a selection of offers.

What should sellers expect from this partnership?

When working with team of Rob and Alexa, clients can be ensured that they will receive top notch customer service, a list of highly recommended vendors in our area, strong communication throughout the process, fun video marketing, and connection to highly qualified buyers—all while creating a huge buzz for their home.

What exciting technology or methods are you using to market homes?

We love video marketing and reaching our clients through social media. We tailor each house listing specifically to highlight its attributes to the right buyer.

What has been going on in the local real estate market during the last 12 months?

The local real estate market has been booming. Buyer’s priorities changed and we have seen a major influx of buyers coming from New York, Hoboken and Jersey City. Buyers are focused on obtaining more space (such as home office needs), and having a larger property to relax in. The buyers from cities no longer want to be in a confined environment especially those working from home and no longer needing to commute. A lot of buyers are moving Late Fall 2020

to our area because of the amazing school systems, travel times to NYC and the easy access to public transportation.

What do you forecast for the next 12 months?

We see the next 12 months being very similar. There is a major pent up demand for houses. It is a great time for both buyers and sellers to transact. That is very rare in the real estate market as it usually favors one side over the other. While housing prices have raised substantially, mortgage rates are low, allowing buyers to afford more with lower payments.

eneral Plumbing Supply, in business since 1910, is still familyowned and operated. Begun as a small company with one location, it is now one of the largest distributors on the East Coast, serving New Jersey, New York, and Eastern Pennsylvania. “Our customer service is one of the things we pride ourselves on and really makes us stand apart, along with the family owned values that we have instilled in the company over the years,” says Sarah Barton, marketing director. “We’re really hoping that when someone enters one of our showrooms, they’re getting the best customer experience and help.” Since General Plumbing Supply offers everything needed for a kitchen and bath space, from standard plumbing fixtures like faucets and shower heads, to tubs, toilets, countertops, cabinetry and lighting, customers can design an entire room with products from one store.

“People can come into any of our 12 showrooms and design an entire space,” says Sarah. “So, even those add on things you might not think about, like towels bars or lighting. Many of the lines we carry offer accessories to match your fixtures.” The products offered are high quality. They don’t just look good, but also perform well over time. In some big box stores, shoppers may find a faucet or

fixture that looks similar to what General Plumbing Supply has, but Sarah says that many times, the components are not the same materials and quality. “We’re very selective in the lines we carry, so everything we do offer is top of the line.”

The painters were friendly, kind and professional. Wilber guarantees his work and personally came to the home to review the job.” Said another, “Wilber’s went above and beyond what we contracted the company to do. Got three quotes from different vendors and Wilber’s had the most competitive pricing. Developing the NEXT GENERATION of Real Estate Pros Photo by Dan Epstein

F

or the past 11 years, CENTURY 21 Cedarcrest’s agents have worked with property buyers and sellers throughout North Jersey on residential and commercial real estate transactions; they are among the region’s top producers and consistently receive high customer service marks year after year. This year, the regional real estate market has seen a big shift, with many city dwellers moving to the suburbs in search of a great quality of life, open space, and better cost of living compared to New York City. According to broker owner John Sass, “Recent figures cite that 1.8 million millennials between ages 24 and 39 account for 72% of today’s housing demand, and the average age among first-time buyers is 32. These buyers are taking their time, evaluating towns within their budget, assessing their needs for space, schools and town amenities… and they are seeking real estate agents they can relate to for help finding that perfect home.”

With that in mind, CENTURY 21 Cedarcrest is actively recruiting younger people who want to develop their book of business at an award-winning brokerage. In fact, its youngest real estate agents are all 30 years old and younger (including one super go-getter who’s 19 and in college!). They are passionate about the business, eager to learn, and are jumping into sales in a highly competitive market, using the system’s industry-leading tech tools to cultivate leads and close sales.

CENTURY 21’s paramount honors: the CENTURY 21 CENTURION® Award for sales production and the President’s Award, the most prestigious honor given to producers, teams and offices that achieve both CENTURION® level production and the Quality Service Pinnacle Award in the same year. In addition, Cedarcrest Realty has been named Best Realtor in the annual Suburban Essex Readers’ Choice Awards five years in a row.

“It’s an exciting time to get into the field and we’re excited about what the future holds for our young professionals,” says Sass.

If you’re looking to start a career in real estate with an office that provides ongoing professional development classes, one-on-one coaching, and the latest tech tools to list homes, contact Cedarcrest Realty.

Multiple-Award-Winning Agency The team at Cedarcrest Realty is especially proud of the industry awards it has won over the years. For 10 years in a row, the agency has earned the CENTURY 21 Quality Service Pinnacle Award—the system’s top customer service award. Dressing Up Your Windows! By Christine S. Maxwell, photo by Dan Epstein

F

or more than 85 years, Metropolitan Window Fashions has provided window dressings for residential homes in northern New Jersey. Initially established in 1934, the family-owned business has spanned three generations. The core mission–to provide quality products and services–has remained intact since its inception. Currently led by Bruce Heyman, the grandson of the founder, Metropolitan is New Jersey’s largest independent retailer of custom window fashions. Metropolitan’s stores display beautiful fabrics and custom window fashions of all styles. All locations have the designation of Hunter Douglas Gallery Centurion dealer–the highest level possible. According to Heyman, “Hunter Douglas only sells through independent dealers; you cannot buy their product online or at a big box store.” The showrooms provide a variety of custom draperies, blinds, shutters, motorized shades, and reupholstery. To assist clients with their selections, Metropolitan offers a free in-home decorating service.

Bruce Heyman Their 30 employees, eight decorators, and five installers are available to design, prepare, customize, and install the finished product. “Unlike the box stores and other competitors, we have the right-sized, knowledgeable staff that can deliver our services from design to installation,” states Heyman. Metropolitan has received numerous local and national business awards for its quality products and services. Remarks Heyman, “Awards are nice, but we want our customers to be happy. That is why we are here–this is a service business.”

Newly Remodeled Caldwell Market Place Offers a Whole New Feel Photo by Dan Epstein

L

ocals who already love the delicious homemade food prepared at Caldwell Market Place are in for a big treat–the whole store has been renovated and remodeled with a new look and feel, as well as more spacious shopping capabilities. Caldwell Market Place prides itself on providing “superior food at reasonable prices to its customers.” The store specializes in offering quality meats, including grass fed varieties, homemade prepared foods that are cooked daily, Nicolo’s breads, fresh vegetables, Italian specialties, including a variety of cheeses, pastas, canned foods and more. Customers enjoy choosing from the 15 or so different homemade hot and

cold meals, sauces and soups prepared daily, as well as standard favorites like Caldwell Market Place’s beef and chicken empanadas, and macaroni and potato salads, with recipes dating back 24 years. In addition, those ordering catered meals for lunch or dinner are never disappointed.

Owner Chris Durko says, “I love the community I serve and what I do.” He is “proud of the food we offer, the recent renovations, and the improved floorplan that I know customers will love.”

New Owner Adds FLAIR to Iconic Spot Photo by Dan Epstein

R

oseland icon Fairchilds Market, a purveyor of deli and prepared foods, fine wines, artisanal spirits, craft beers, ales, gifts and oddments, has added to its robust offerings. The quaint establishment, with an inviting, old-fashioned rustic, country store feel, now boasts a curated cheese case, meat and produce sections, and a refrigerated section with milk, eggs and other necessities, as well as tabletop displays of ripe tomatoes for making Sunday gravy, and other Italian specialty food favorites. These additions come courtesy of new owner Chris Durko, a skilled butcher by trade, who is also the proprietor of four-year-old Caldwell Market Place. He says one of the main reasons he took over Fairchilds is because “everything is homemade.” Fairchilds is known for serving up hefty sandwiches, homemade dressings and sauces, as well as New Jersey’s own Town Hall triple-decker Sloppy Joe sandwich, and Pals Cabin’s original cream of mushroom soup. “I felt Fairchilds was a great store and would be perfect with the addition of the products we sell at Caldwell Market Place,” says Durko. Now, when people stop in, “I enjoy helping them find the perfect cut and amount of meat needed for recipes and can assist them in completing their meal with a bottle of wine or liquor of their choice.”

SHOW YOUR BEST

YOU

H

ow you present yourself online is critical, especially in these days of the pandemic,” says photographer Dan Epstein. Whether it’s a business website, online meeting, or presence in social media marketing, most people agree that a first impression is key. “No kidding”, he adds, “you get, like, two seconds to capture someone’s attention before you lose them to a click through. The photograph of you simply has to be engaging, and able to show the best part of you.” With over three decades of experience shooting for some of America’s biggest magazines, Fortune 500 companies, as well as many local small businesses, Epstein can do just that: take a photograph that presents you or your business in your best light. Whether you call it a business portrait, or a headshot, after a scheduled telephone or FaceTime meeting, he will come to your location, or someplace else you choose, with the appropriate photo gear and COVID safety measures, and make a series of photographs to make sure that you have a selection of excellent alternatives to choose from. Many clients are so pleased with the results that they choose multiple different portraits for their marketing and social media efforts. You can preview a selection of his work on his website and reach him through it as well. Go ahead, contact him, it’s time to put your best face forward.

Creative Pieces for Your Home

C

reative Works has been a part of a small business community for over 20 years. Beginning their journey in Summit with a small retail location that specialized in home accessories, gifts and custom floral designs, they grew into a larger store in Millburn that allowed them to offer full-service decorating with a full showroom of furniture and imported French Antiques. Today, they are located at their newest home in Livingston. The business and its showroom continue to offer the same unique perspective that has helped withstand the many changes to the design and retail world. Creative Works specializes in interior decoration: from “freshen-ups” to full house transformations. Their store is filled with wonderful furniture, lighting, artwork, antiques and a huge variety of unique accessories to complete your interior. Whether you want to completely change up the look inside your home or are hoping to find something specific and unique for yourself or as a gift, visit their showroom to get started.

Chic Style in Town

S

ince they opened in 2018, Cotton & Jewels has become a popular destination in town for fashionable, affordable clothing, fine fashion jewelry and accessories. Owner Shari Schenerman of Jolie Jewels NYC prides herself as a curator of “pieces that you’re not going to see in department stores.” While following CDC guidelines, the store offers a non-crowded, socially distant place to comfortably shop. The boutique has undergone a transformation catering to today’s “work from home” lifestyle or what the CJ Team calls “ZOOM CHIC,” which naturally translates into a more affordable price point. The merchandise is always on trend and usually ahead of the curve–city style but located in the suburbs. The Jolie Jewels NYC team manufactures and carefully curates the new and edgy jewelry, often turning vintage pieces into “something new and fresh.” Chunky chains and hoop earrings (in all different shapes and sizes) are in demand this fall. Lounge sets and comfy but stylish sweaters are this season’s must haves, with new arrivals pouring in weekly. A little place for retail therapy.

Superb CRAFTSMANSHIP to Create Your SANCTUARY By Cynthia Burns

G

enerations of excellence is how Christopher Zucchi describes the family construction business. As a fourth generation Zucchi in this 86-year-old business, he is continuing the company’s outstanding reputation for renovating, painting and decorating, and new construction projects. Each successive generation at Victor Zucchi & Son has put their authentication on the business. Christopher’s father, Edward Jr., expanded it to include new church construction and large-scale church renovations, as well as institutional and a variety of commercial construction projects. Christopher wants to grow in these current markets and expand into custom residential and renovations projects, which has already begun with great success.

In 2019, Victor Zucchi & Son received a Silver design award from the Association of Licensed Architects for their alteration of the Saint Catherine of Siena Sanctuary in Connecticut. “The same level of craftsmanship and care that is required to be an award-winning construction firm is applied to each job, whether it be large or small, institutional, commercial or residential,” says Christopher. To underscore his point, he cites the renovation of St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Cathedral in Paterson. “That required a lot of coordination including importing materials, assembly, installation, major structural renovations–down to the final touches.” Unlike other construction companies, a family member is always on site to oversee a project. Edward Jr. notes that Victor Zucchi & Son also undertakes insurance rebuilds after a fire or a flood. The company has instituted

COVID-safe procedures and offers complimentary estimates. Christopher welcomes your call and the opportunity to build or renovate your next commercial, residential, or religious project. “Let us be your ‘sense of comfort’ during what can be an arduous undertaking.”

Mount St. Dominic Reopens its Doors By Amanda Valentovic

T

he COVID-19 pandemic sent high schools across the country into a tailspin when it hit in March, but Mount St. Dominic Academy in Caldwell has been weathering the ongoing storm well, according to Dean of Academics Laura Hollenbaugh. “We took a good, hard look at the CDC guidelines. We asked ourselves, ‘How can we have in-person classes, which are such an important part of what we value?’ We measured every classroom and figured out how can we bring students back safely,” Dean Hollenbaugh says. The all-girls high school has three cohorts running: one of students who chose the completely virtual learning option and two of hybrid learners who rotate what days they are in the building. When students are home, they are logged in and learning. “I think when students came back, they were disoriented,” Dean Hollenbaugh says about the required masks and social distancing rules that students are dealing with. “But everyone would much prefer to be here, and they’ve adapted. is a lot of gratitude, because they know many other schools can’t open.” The school is finding ways to recreate the normal traditions of a school year, and adjusting day by day. Teachers have learned how to use new technology and how to teach students who are with them in the classroom or learning remotely. “It is so great to see how people are working together to get through something really difficult,” notes Dean Hollenbaugh. “I’m proud of them, and I’m proud to be a part of it.”

OUR HOUSE HEROES A Time for Thanksgiving

O

ur House, a Murray Hill based nonprofit providing residential, day and support services for adult with disabilities, is forever grateful to the many heroes who rose to the top during the worst days of the pandemic and continue to do so. “When the pandemic hit we immediately went into crisis mode in order to keep our residents and staff safe and healthy,” says Michele DelCorsano, Our House President and CEO, “We identified what our immediate needs were, put out a plea for help and people from all walks of life stepped in.”

Our House is bursting with heroes, many known by name but others quiet and anonymous. Heroes included Board Members who coordinated meals and birthday celebrations for the residential programs, community members who dropped off PPE supplies and provided hundreds of homemade masks and, of course, the Our House direct service professionals. A key factor in the limited number of COVID cases affecting Our House was that many staff moved into residential programs to limit the number of staff members rotating through the program – true heroes. “On behalf of the Our House family, thank you to everyone who has helped thus far and who continue to help. I would like to invite others to join our list of heroes. In this season of thanks and giving, we hope people will consider supporting Our House,” continues DelCorsano.

Dr. Eric M. Sacks

Orthodontist Recommends Evaluation as Early as Age 7 Early Assessment Can Help Avoid Complex Problems and Treatment Later On By Martta Kelly, photos by Dan Epstein

M

ost people think that the first visit to the orthodontist begins in one’s teen years. Dr. Eric M. Sacks and owner of Sacks Orthodontics in Livingston wants to set them—and their children’s teeth—straight. “The American Association of Orthodontists recommends screenings around the age of 7,” said Sacks, a board certified orthodontic specialist. “In my office, I encourage parents to

bring their children in around the age of 7. This doesn’t necessarily mean that all children will be getting active treatment at this young age, it simply means that if a developing problem is detected and managed early that it can be exceedingly beneficial.” He added that early assessment can often help avoid more complex treatment later on. At the initial visit, he usually obtains a panoramic radiograph, which is a

special type of dental X-ray that is often not taken at one’s family dentist. The x-ray gives a broad overview of the entire dentition and structures. “The radiograph is a wealth of information,” said Sacks, “it allows me to see if all of the permanent teeth are present, that there are no extra teeth or missing teeth, and that the developing teeth are growing properly.”

Sacks advocates “growth guidance,” which involves examining a child’s development every six to nine months to observe any changes. If and when the timing is right, treatment can be initiated. The timing of treatment is important. There is such a thing as treating too early or too late. Getting in early and having the orthodontist monitor things over time is generally very helpful. People often have misconceptions about orthodontia, he added. “Many parents think that the baby teeth should always

While this is often the case, there are many times when the baby teeth don’t or won’t fall out on their own due to problems with the developing adult teeth. Often times, the simple removal of select baby teeth can help the grown up teeth come in much more favorably and help avoid more intricate oral surgical and orthodontic procedures in the future.”

r. Sacks invented Dentagrafix® because he saw a void in the expanding use of clear appliances. Kids and adults alike enjoy selecting colors for their braces or choosing patterns and designs on their retainers. As more orthodontic care is being rendered with removable aligners and clear retainers, the option for colors or designs didn’t exist. Dentagrafix® fills this void by turning something that is dull and boring into something fun. The professionally designed patterns are strategically placed on the back teeth leaving the front clear, allowing the appliance to remain inconspicuous while adding an element of individuality.

Dentagrafix® plastics are FDA compliant, durable, safe, effective and have numerous advantages. The colorful designs reduce the likelihood of losing the appliance, patient compliance increases when they are engaged by wearing something expressive, and it helps distinguish one family members appliance from the other. Straightforward

RESOLUTIONS to Family Law Issues

By Cynthia Burns

F

amily law is one of the most emotionally and financially complex areas of law,” believes Melissa Cipriano, Esq. “Having been through the process, I understand that clients experience emotions in an intensified form.” For that reason, Cipriano Law Offices advocates reaching a settlement rather than enduring a long litigation process. Family law encompasses divorce, child custody and support, adoption, prenuptial agreements and domestic abuse. All attorneys at Cipriano Law Offices work as a team. They are mindful of the financial costs of each case and handle them efficiently.

Cipriano describes the firm as mediation friendly, although divorce cases are prepared as if they will go to trial. The attorneys are qualified family law mediators. Cipriano cites the benefits of mediation as controlling the outcome of a case, protecting the interests of the client and children, and reducing fees and the timeline of the proceedings. The attorneys are members of the New Jersey Collaborative Law Group, which promotes a unified team approach rather than an adversarial one. “This works for the betterment of the family.” Cipriano’s passion for family law was fueled when a friend asked her to represent him in a child custody case. She won the case, and has enjoyed

Melissa Cipriano, Esq. watching that child grow up. Working in family law, Cipriano promises practical and straightforward legal advice to provide resolutions that are in the client’s best interests.

nderson Electric is approaching its 30-year anniversary, no small achievement for any business. Starting off the new year, founding owner George Anderson is working harder than ever by announcing the grand opening of a larger, more spacious office and shop area in Cedar Grove. Anderson explains, “We have been expanding both our electrician workforce and our office personnel, so we needed more space. This new location has on-site parking for our employees; it also has a larger workshop space conveniently connected to a larger office space. There is more room all around, which allows us to better serve our terrific customers.” George describes Anderson Electric as “a full-service electrical contracting

company,” doing both residential and commercial work. In addition, the company offers specialty residential services such as Knob and Tube remediation. According to Anderson, “Knob and Tube wiring was commonly installed from the 1880s through the 1940s. It’s an outdated wiring system and a potential safety hazard.” The team of electricians at Anderson Electric are experts in the identification and disconnection of this outdated system and one of the few companies in the area that are true specialists in this type of work. Beyond standard renovation and repair work, Anderson Electric has a separate generator division, selling and servicing Generac natural gas stand-by generator Late Fall 2020

systems. The company is a certified Generac generator dealer and is also a certified Generac warranty repair service. Anderson is proud that his company has been named “Best of Essex” five years in a row and invites all existing and new customers to visit their new Cedar Grove location. He says, “Our level of customer service is what has allowed us to continue expanding our business and the services we offer. We are grateful to have so many loyal customers, and we always want to do better for them.”

PPP Loans – Round 2 –

FORGIVENESS By Michael H. Karu, CPA/CFF/CGMA, Levine Jacobs & Company, LLC

A

fter the SBA had issued its initial guidelines for forgiveness on PPP loans, several modifications to the rules have been made. While the modifications are more favorable, it’s important to understand the new rules and to abide by their requirements. PPP loans are low interest note obligations that require repayment based upon specific terms unless forgiveness is requested by the borrower. Forgiveness is not granted automatically. In order to obtain forgiveness on your PPP loan, an application and certain required documentation must be filed with the bank that approved and provided the loan. To avoid paying any interest or loan payments, and to try and obtain full forgiveness, the application should be submitted within ten months of the end of your Covered Period. For loans that were assigned a PPP loan number before June 5, 2020, borrows have a choice of using an 8 week or 24 week Covered Period. For loans that were assigned a loan number after June 5, 2020, the Covered Period is assumed to be a 24 week period.

To achieve full forgiveness, there are two factors that must be considered, spending and employment. The spending limits have been changed whereby no more than 40% may be allocated to non-payroll items with the other 60% attributable to payroll. This is up from 25%. The employment requirements were changed allowing a company to rehire by December 31st instead of June 30th. The calculation of full time equivalent employees or FTEs is detail driven with a lot of the information being obtainable through your payroll provider.

From left: Charles Ott, Timothy Shore, James Kruper, Kim Forrester, Michael Karu, and Richard Hoffman Of considerable interest is the most recent change that enables borrowers of $50,000 or less to file Short Form 3508S. This newest modification allows for eligible borrowers to be exempt from reductions in loan forgiveness based on reductions in FTEs or in salaries or wages. Unchanged to this point is the tax implications relating to loan forgiveness. Under IRS Code Section 265, while the forgiven loan proceeds are not considered taxable income, the expenses on which the funds are spent are deemed not deductible for the year they were incurred. If you need assistance in completing the PPP Loan Forgiveness Forms, we have a team assembled to help.

Going Outside the Boundaries of Your Home By Susan Baldani

W

ith people spending more time at home now than ever before, the desire to expand one’s living spaces is in high demand. Homeowners want to create an oasis for themselves and their families not only inside their homes, but outside as well. Andrew Braverman, a builder with over 18 years of experience in the state of NJ and president of KMF Companies, a boutique luxury builder, has seen a heightened interest in pools and patios. “One of the things we found with COVID is that people are putting more of an investment into their homes,” he says. “Because they’re spending more time there, they want to enjoy the various aspects of it, and want to get as much year-round use as possible.” For luxury patio areas, almost all are being done with blue stone, and have at least one fire pit and a covered area. Outdoor lounges, with a kitchen and bar featuring multiple televisions, are also highly sought after. For luxury pools, the most popular are Hampton-style rectangular pools with sun shelves and automatic covers, which keep warmth in and also add an element of safety.

Providing Patients with Natural Looking Results By Cynthia Burns, photo by Dan Epstein

H

aving experience and knowledge leads to superior judgement, which in turn leads to successful surgery,” attests Dr. Paul LoVerme, founder of the LoVerme Center for Plastic Surgery. He offers patients aesthetic facial & nasal surgery and contouring for the breasts and body. “Refinements from aesthetic surgery often produce positive changes in self-perception and confidence,” he states. “I take a lot of time with patients pre-operatively,” he notes. A key component of the breast surgery consultation is Dr. LoVerme’s use of Sculpt My Dream® software that allows patients to view the results of breast lifts and/or various implant types and sizes before undergoing the procedure. Patients are better able to make decisions together with Dr LoVerme to best achieve the cosmetic results they desire. For men or women who are bothered by unwanted fat deposits or who have loose abdominal skin that has not responded to diet or exercise, Dr. LoVerme may recommend a tummy tuck, often combined with liposuction. The surgery is beneficial to women who have had multiple pregnancies and wish to tighten their abdominal muscles or for men and women who have achieved significant weight loss. At his practice he performs a ‘no drain tummy tuck,’ a suture technique that prevents fluid accumulation without the use of drainage tubes. “Patients are more comfortable and can often return to normal physical activities sooner, without complications,” he states. Liposuction to remove fat from the hips, thighs, abdomen, midriff and areas of the neck and arms has long been a mainstay in the specialty of plastic surgery. As with breast augmentation, the use of 3D technology allows patients to view the results before the procedure. Dr. LoVerme is a proponent of incorporating the newest, safest technology into his practice. He has expertise in SAFE Liposuction, which stands for SeparationAspiration-Fat Equalization. “I have used every type of liposuction (tumescent, ultrasound, Laser, Vaser and power)” he says, “and I get the best results with SAFE lipo.” Enhance, contour, reconstruct and rejuvenate are key elements of the the LoVerme Center for Plastic Surgery. “It doesn’t have to be natural to look natural,” says Dr. LoVerme. He looks forward to helping patients achieve harmonious, natural looking results.

Med Dawoud, DMD, FICOI

The One-Stop-Destination for EXCELLENT Smiles By Jackie Schatell, photo by Dan Epstein

M

ed Dawoud, DMD, FICOI, and founder of D&G Dental, is not your usual general family dentist– and neither is his practice. Unlike most practices, D&G Dental offers patients a one-stop-destination for excellent smiles, going beyond general dentistry services like cleanings and dental exams to offer implant dentistry, complex cosmetic dentistry, and oral surgery. Dr. Dawoud, who earned a Fellowship in the prestigious International Congress of Oral Implantologists (ICOI), is both a highly skilled general dentist and highly trained dental implant practitioner that has “personally placed and restored well over 2000 dental implants.” According to Dr. Dawoud, “Implants are a great solution for single missing teeth, multiple missing teeth to

full upper or lower missing teeth that can be placed with a final outcome that is permanent and not removable.” In addition, since D&G is a one-stop-shop, Dr. Dawoud notes that he “personally places the implants and restores the teeth–all in the same facility, so there’s no need to see more than one dentist.” D&G uses the latest state-of-the-art technology including Cone Beam Cat Scans and Oral Digital scanners to obtain “the most accurate records for a fast, less invasive, and more importantly, a more predictable outcome.” In addition, D&G employs in-house 3D printers “to assure the patient is happy and content with the final look, feel and bite before quickly completing the permanent teeth.”

Late Fall 2020

Aside from single implants, D&G Dental also offers the “All on 4” procedure for full arch restorations. This procedure is great for people with multiple missing or damaged teeth in the same arch because it relies on a dental implantbased foundation to support a permanent denture or porcelain-like bridge, using four or more dental implants to support an entire row of teeth. The procedure results in restoring patients’ smiles and preserving their oral health and function, often in the same day. Rather than waiting to see the dentist until there is a COVID vaccination, Dr. Dawoud, whose practice offers free implant consultations and cosmetic evaluations, urges that “everyone see a dentist regularly, especially if they feel anything is wrong with their teeth.” Come see why so many individuals have restored their teeth with dental implants with Dr. Dawoud at his state of the art facility.

One Amazing Community, Four Ways to Visit & Learn More:

r. RoseAnn Giannella, DDS, sees many patients who are deeply ashamed of their teeth. “They’ll put their hands in front of their mouths when they smile. It absolutely affects their selfesteem,” she said. For an increasing number of middle-aged-tosenior patients who have “hopeless” teeth, Dr. Giannella recommends “implant-supported dentures,” also known as permanent dentures. This type of denture, instead of resting unsecured on the gums, is attached to implants in the jaw. It can be taken in and out for cleaning, and provides the look of a healthy, complete set of teeth.

Dr. Giannella

After the initial consultation and examination, “Patients come in and have an interim denture or dentures fitted, while their permanent dentures are being created,” Dr. Giannella said. Though in most cases all existing teeth are being replaced, partial replacements are also possible.

“Afterwards, people don’t worry about pain—and they can eat whatever they want,” she said. Also, since overall health is closely connected to dental health, they may well benefit in multiple other ways. In-office aftercare includes a yearly return visit, during which the dentures will be removed and given a complete cleaning before being replaced in the mouth. The procedure has become so popular that “dentures in a day” clinics are widely advertised, but the security and comfort of Dr. Giannella’s office eases the fears many people may have about the procedure. Dr. Giannella also provides all general dentistry services, as well as cosmetic services, including whitening, porcelain veneers, esthetic bonding, and Invisalign.

Helping Remote Learners Through

VIRTUAL COACHING By Cynthia Burns

W

ith the shift to remote learning, parents may observe that their children have trouble with independent skills. They may lack executive functioning skills, explains Julie Potischman, NCC, LPC of Roseland Psychotherapy Associates. “These skills are needed to manage everyday tasks, such as organization, problem solving, planning, time management, task initiation and emotion regulation.” Those without executive functioning skills may also have a diagnosis of ADHD or be on the Autism spectrum. There are markers that indicate if a child lacks executive functioning skills. Says Potischman, “They feel overwhelmed by tasks that need to be completed each day. They tend to lose or forget things, miss important deadlines, display disruptive behavior, procrastinate and seem unusually forgetful or rigid in their thinking.”

Often these children are labeled lazy or difficult. They internalize the negative messages they receive and feel like academic failures. Fortunately, clients can be taught to develop these essential skills through coaching. Coaching–in-person, phone or virtual– helps clients to develop routines and devise strategies that allow for success in their academic and personal lives. Clients and coaches can anticipate scenarios that may arise and devise ways to deal with a variety of situations. Coaches are not therapists. The time commitment depends on the client’s needs–some talk with their coach ten minutes each day. Roseland Psychotherapy Associates’ services span the full gamut of psychological treatment for depression, anxiety and other diagnoses, and psychiatric consultations, among others. Potischman and her staff welcome

Julie Potischman, MA, NCC, LPC & Beth Merlin, MSW, LCSW, Owners of Roseland Psychotherapy Associates the opportunity to assist clients who require assistance developing executive functioning skills, who have a mental health concern or who are feeling overwhelmed.

Mental Health for the WHOLE Family Discovery Wellness Center Treats Parents and Children for a Wide Range of Issues By Deborah Schapiro

ivorce…Substance abuse… Domestic violence...Gender identity. Whatever the issue, Dr. Christopher Barker has seen it. Dr. Barker, a Ph.D. psychologist, is the owner and Executive Director of Discovery Wellness Center; he and his staff treat children and families for all sorts of issues affecting mental health. Established in 2015 as a complement to the Discovery Psychotherapy Center, the Morristown-based Discovery Wellness Center provides individual, group and family counseling. The multiple therapists on staff act as a team: For instance, family clients may be split up so that one parent sees one therapist, the other sees a second, and the child sees a third.

In addition to emotional issues, Discovery Wellness Center also helps with neurological and educational ones. Dr. Barker notes, “Undiagnosed learning issues can affect a child’s mental health as well as their performance in school. We do intelligence testing for both children and adults, as well assessments for issues ranging from dementia to ADD and ADHD.” He adds, “We’ve tried very hard to achieve a family-friendly environment, starting from the moment a client walks in. Our receptionists are very welcoming, and there are plenty of toys in the waiting room. One wall in the waiting room has a blackboard to draw on, and another has a big screen showing fun movies and videos.”

t AIM Orthopedics Physical Therapy and Sports Medicine in Little Falls, Dr. Raffaele Lagonigro, DPT has been offering the highest quality treatment for years. “I decided to start my own practice to spend more time with patients, oneon-one, and do more hands-on techniques in order to give the patients the best outcome,” he says. Dr. Lagonigro feels he has a unique approach to treatment. He believes that getting away from passive modalities like electric stimulation and ultrasound and replacing them with analytical and manual skills are in the best interest of the patient. “If we can teach you how to be aware of what you do and how you move and what your body’s doing, and if you just gain a little bit of that awareness, it can change your life,” he says. Also, the public needs to be educated about the benefits of using physical therapy instead of medications and injections. “If we can teach you how to manage pain, it’s something that can last a lifetime.”

3 Top Treatments for Pain & Injuries

D

r. Glenn Sorrentino of NJ Spine & Joint is an expert at solving patients’ pain and injury problems. His unique protocols include the most advanced non-surgical healing treatments and technologies that help even the most difficult cases. Here’s a look at three of the highly effective treatments provided at the Cedar Grove multi-specialty practice.

Dr. Glenn Sorrentino

Cold Laser Therapy

NormaTec Recovery System The NormaTec recovery system uses air compression massage technology to increase circulation and accelerate recovery time. This innovative technology helps the rehabilitation process by reducing both inflammation and fluid accumulation. “The leg system is good for any knee injury, as well as ankle, shin, calf, quadricep and hamstring problems,” explains Dr. Sorrentino. “The arm system facilitates range of motion and is great for shoulder injuries, forearms and elbows. Our athletes love this technology for the quick recovery it provides. But you certainly don’t have to be an athlete to benefit from it.”

MR4 Cold Laser Therapy Cold laser is a highly advanced technology that repairs damaged tissue by emitting targeted beams of light energy deep into the tissue to activate natural regeneration. The laser provides healing for a variety of conditions and injuries from head to toe. “Our MR4 cold laser is a state-of-the-art treatment that is safe and painless with no side effects,” says Dr. Sorrentino. “The light reaches the mitochondria of each cell to stimulate the production of ATP, which is the body’s energy source. Our 64

patients are testimonies to how extremely effective this technology is.”

PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma) Therapy PRP therapy is a regenerative treatment that utilizes the healing power of a patient’s own blood to repair tissue that has been damaged due to age, injury or wear-and-tear. PRP is good for many areas of the body, such as shoulders, knees, hips and back. “The patient’s blood is centrifuged to isolate the platelet-rich plasma, which contains high concentrations of proteins and growth factors,” he explains. “The platelet-rich plasma is then injected by our medical doctor into the injured area, which stimulates the body’s healing process.” Complimentary Consultation. For a free consultation with Dr. Sorrentino, call 973-433-0889 to schedule an appointment. “We’ll get to the root of your problem and determine which treatments are best for you.”

ith being months into the pandemic, people really need to get back to their doctors for regular exams—including to their podiatrists, says Dr. Matthew Wachtler of Cedar Grove Foot & Ankle Specialists. Especially for patients who have underlying conditions that can potentially affect their feet, such as diabetes. “It’s time to get back on your regular schedule.” Maintaining foot and ankle health is essential for overall well-being, and Dr. Wachtler recognizes that everyone’s time is valuable. If a patient comes in for an initial evaluation, whether for an ingrown toenail, a bunion, pain from plantar fasciitis, or one of the many other conditions his facility treats, it is often possible to start treatment immediately. Relief from the heel or arch pain of plantar fasciitis might start with a cortisone shot. Then there are many options, including custom-made orthotics, which can aid in healing the irritated and inflamed ligament, and help prevent future injury. Dr. Wachtler explains. “Over-the-counter orthotics provide cushioning, he says, but custom orthotics are molded to an individual’s feet so that they also support the arches and absorb shock.”

Dr. Matthew Wachtler Cedar Grove Foot & Ankle Specialists also specializes in “fall risk assessment,” and this is particularly important right now for seniors, because many are living without as much home support as they had pre-pandemic. As for the “weekend warriors,” who may be nursing a sprain at home, they shouldn’t put off treatment, either. “It can literally mean getting back on your feet,” he states.

Row, Row, Row Your Bike! MAKING FITNESS FUN Barry Farber

By Barry Farber

H

ow do you keep in shape, not get bored and make your workouts fun? I’m a big believer in varying your workouts so you not only keep it interesting but utilize a variety of different muscles. I’ve been experimenting with all types of workouts over the years: using sixteen 2.5-pound rings on my arms while training in martial arts, attaching car tires to my waist and doing pull ups, etc. (see more @ barryfarberofficial). Being creative and using all types of devices around the house allows for a full body workout. Even taking out the garbage can be turned into a great exercise. One of my favorite fitness products is the RowBike that allows you to get the benefits of rowing with strength training and cardio at the

same time, but also the enjoyment of being outside and the mobility of a bike.

Do the exercises slow at first, use less weights, less repetitions. It’s also a better workout. Remember–slow you grow and fast never lasts.

Here are several things to think about when choosing a workout that impacts the entire body:

3. Keep in mind that the right posture and the right breathing are essential to all types of movement and training. The right breathing calms you, brings oxygen to your blood and enhances your energy. The right posture makes sure your muscles are used properly and decreases fatigue.

1. Always try to look at exercises and movement that engages the legs, core and upper body. If you find those type of exercises that encompass a full body workout, it will save you time and include the benefits some muscle groups miss out on. 2. Get the fundamentals down and the level of everything you do will rise. Anytime you start a new exercise (consult your doctor if needed), keep in mind that when it comes to working out new parts of your body you should begin slowly.

There is never just one way to work out. As Bruce Lee said and I’ve mentioned many times in the past: “Collect what is useful, Discard what is not...and then Create your own style.”

“You can’t depend on your eyes when your imagination is out of focus.” —Mark Twain
