T

he Board of Trustees of Caldwell University has chosen Dr. Matthew Whelan as the next president of the Catholic Dominican university. A native of New Jersey, Whelan will become the ninth president of Caldwell and the first male lay president in the history of the institution, effective on July 1. Dr. Whelan will succeed Dr. Nancy Blattner, who has served at Caldwell University since July 2009. Dr. Whelan is currently Vice President for University Enrollment Strategy and Dr. Matthew Whelan Relationship Development at Stony Brook University. Laurita Warner, chair of Caldwell University’s Board of Trustees, said that following a national search, the board is pleased to welcome Dr. Whelan. “I speak for all the trustees who are excited and invigorated by the skills, experience and passion Matt will bring to Caldwell University. We value his commitment to our Catholic Dominican tradition and are confident in his ability to innovate and further our upward trajectory of success at Caldwell.”

J

ob Haines Home in Bloomfield celebrated winning the Gold Medal in the 2019 Best of Essex Contest in a special way! After winning the award for Best Senior Living, Marketing Director Reineen Dohman showed her appreciation for her staff with t-shirts featuring their gold medal. The senior living facility went all out to celebrate being named Best of Essex. Says Dohman, “We had a celebration luncheon with giveaways, including gift cards and the t-shirts.” The award-winning staff all showed off their medals for Friday dress down day.

“I’m delighted to be joining the team at Caldwell University. As a first generation, Pell eligible college student who attended Catholic schools, early on I developed a love for small Catholic colleges and their commitment to reaching out to deserving students, especially the underrepresented in higher education, and teaching others to serve and give back,” said Dr. Whelan.

Gelati by Mike Ranked #1 in North America at International Gelato Convention

P

aterson native Chef Mike Guerriero was recently honored at Sigep Rimini in Italy by being awarded two crowns (gelato equivalent of Michelin Stars) and ranked the #7 gelato chef in the world by the Gelato Festival World Masters. Guerriero is the youngest and only American Chef to crack the top 10, and one of the newest chefs to burst on to the scene quickly, rising up the ranks after just one year of competing. Over the last 14 months of Gelato Festival, Guerriero has broken barriers by becoming the first American born chef to win a Gelato Festival stage, and then going on to win the first ever North American Finals. Guerriero will represent the United States in 2021 in the Gelato Festival World Masters, which will see representatives from 20 countries, and over 30 chefs competing for the title of the World Champion. Guerriero got his start in the business working for Gelotti Ice Cream in his hometown of Paterson, NJ. A trip to Sigep Rimini in 2010 changed everything when Guerriero was introduced to the international gelato culture. “I remember coming home so inspired to be authentic, to take pride and hone my craft like they did in Italy.” Gelati by Mike currently has 3 locations in Caldwell, Montclair, and Randolph.

Generating Even More CUSTOMER SATISFACTION Anderson Electric Moves to Cedar Grove for Expanded Space By Deborah Schapiro, photo by Dan Epstein

A

nderson Electric is approaching its 30-year anniversary, no small achievement for any business. Starting off the new year, founding owner George Anderson is working harder than ever by announcing the grand opening of a larger, more spacious office and shop area in Cedar Grove. Anderson explains, “We have been expanding both our electrician workforce and our office personnel, so we needed more space. This new location has on-site parking for our employees; it also has a larger workshop space conveniently connected to a larger office space. There is more room all around, which allows us to better serve our terrific customers.” George describes Anderson Electric as “a full-service electrical contracting

company,” doing both residential and commercial work. In addition, the company offers specialty residential services such as Knob and Tube remediation. According to Anderson, “Knob and Tube wiring was commonly installed from the 1880s through the 1940s. It’s an outdated wiring system and a potential safety hazard.” The team of electricians at Anderson Electric are experts in the identification and disconnection of this outdated system and one of the few companies in the area that are true specialists in this type of work. Beyond standard renovation and repair work, Anderson Electric has a separate generator division, selling and servicing Generac natural gas stand-by generator March 2020

systems. The company is a certified Generac generator dealer and is also a certified Generac warranty repair service. Anderson is proud that his company has been named “Best of Essex” five years in a row and invites all existing and new customers to visit their new Cedar Grove location. He says, “Our level of customer service is what has allowed us to continue expanding our business and the services we offer. We are grateful to have so many loyal customers, and we always want to do better for them.”

Musical Theatre Conservatory– Broadway Boot Camp 973-868-6259 www.musicaltheatreconservatory.com Limited Enrollment July 6–25 (Final Show in NYC on July 25) Monday–Friday, 9:15am–3:45pm

A

t Musical Theatre Conservatory, “Theatre for Life” is more than just a motto; it is their guiding philosophy. Through their Broadway Boot Camp, which takes place this summer from July 6–25, children aged 7 to 19 get the opportunity to bring this philosophy to life. Broadway Boot Camp teaches children the skills they need to actually get on stage and do what they love. Whether they are an experienced performer or just starting out, MTC students work with theatre professionals, who are committed to giving every child the solid foundation they need to be the best performer they can be. From the material and faculty they choose, to the specialized way they teach all aspects of performing–it’s all about providing your child with a summer theatre experience they will never forget! Each day, students will enjoy a rotating schedule that includes: Voice, Acting, Theatre Dance, Hip Hop, Song Interpretation, Comedy Improvisation, Stage Combat, TV & Commercial Acting, Audition Techniques, Make-Up, and Production Rehearsal. The program ends with a “splash” with their annual Luau Pool Party! In just three weeks, students are guided from classes to rehearsals culminating in a costumed, cabaret-style show, produced by theatre professionals. Students also have the chance to meet with agents and Broadway actors to get the inside scoop on working in theatre, film, and television. This

year’s show will be held at Symphony Space on Broadway and 95th Street. “I’m very proud of my students,” says Artistic Director Randy Elman. “One of my past students just left the cast of Wicked on Broadway to be in the new revival of Company. Before that, she was in Aladdin on Broadway for 4 years!” Says Brandon Uranowitz, 2 time Tony Award Nominee,“If it wasn’t for Randy, I wouldn’t be where I am today!” At MTC, they pride themselves on providing individual attention to all campers. Every student is given the opportunity to participate, grow, succeed, and feel important. The goal is to draw out each person’s individual strengths and at the same time stress the importance of working together. (continued on page 28)

This Pi Day, Make Math Fun for Kids

P

i Day, is not only an annual opportunity to celebrate math, it’s also a day to honor the renowned scientist and mathematician, Albert Einstein, born on March 14. Make math fun this Pi Day: Visit a Math Museum: Take the kids to a hands-on math museum featuring fun interactive exhibits, events, puzzles, games and more that bring math to life. Bake a ‘Pi’: Bake a pie and carve the symbol for pi into your creation. This is also a great opportunity to calculate fractions, angles, percentages and areas! Learn the meaning of Pi: A very special number, pi is the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter, making its value essential for those studying geometry. It’s also an “irrational number,” meaning it’s exact value can’t be expressed as a fraction. While scientists have calculated trillions of

PreK through 8th Grade

digits of pi, you are likely familiar with the first few—3.14. Use a high-quality graphing or scientific calculator, such as those from Casio, to study up on several more of pi’s digits and practice using its value in equations. Learn More About Einstein: There are many terrific biographies for all reading levels available, as well as documentaries and biopics that can help your family learn more about the life and work of the legendary Albert Einstein. Math may sometimes get a reputation for being one of the tougher school subjects, but it can also be a lot of fun. Let this Pi Day be an opportunity to show your kids that math is something to celebrate. —StatePoint Photo source: (c) Mizina / iStock via Getty Images Plus

Create an Inner Peace

S

pending even a few minutes in mediation can restore calm and inner peace. When you meditate, your racing thoughts slow down, and a sense of well-being emerges. The benefits extend beyond your meditation session, improving your overall emotional and physical health. Meditation is credited for helping you build stress-management skills; focusing on the present instead of worrying about the future; increasing self-awareness; gaining a clearer perspective on stressful situations, and reducing negative emotions. Studies have shown that meditation may be useful in treating allergies, depression, fatigue, anxiety disorders, high blood pressure, pain, sleep disorders, heart disease and substance abuse. (It is not, however, a substitute for traditional medical care.)

create your own mantra, choosing a word or phrase you find calming. Repeat it silently and again, when other thoughts pop into your mind, gently return to repeating your mantra.

There are many types of meditation, including guided meditation or visualization, mantra meditation, yoga, Tai chi, Qi gong, and mindfulness. The point is usually to quiet your racing thoughts and achieve a sense of balance, calm and well-being by staying in the present moment.

Another approach is a walking meditation, slowing your pace and concentrating on your movement rather than a destination. Choose a quiet walking path without traffic (some churches and offer labyrinths, paths set up in circular patterns that help you meditate as you walk).

The simplest way to begin to meditate is to set aside a few minutes (or as much time as you want) and practice deep breathing. Focus all your attention on your breath, and return your attention when it begins to wonder (and it will). You can also

Whatever form of meditation you choose, be sure to carve out time for it, no matter how hectic schedule. Inner peace, energy, optimism, and balance are wonderful gifts to yourself.

A graduate of Loyola University, Maryland, and credentialed by the National Academy of Sports Medicine, Marisa is our resident Certified Personal Trainer and Corrective Exercise Specialist. Her expertise is based on working with recently rehabilitated clients, as a PT aide, and also with athletes involved in different sports. For these, she likes to create programs in which she comes up with functional and integrated exercises to assist them with their performance in their given sport, be it Track & Field, Soccer, Martial Arts, etc. She is committed to help her clients reach their fitness goals, and achieves that through a combination of strength training and high intensity interval training, which maximizes the time spent exercising. Since any fitness program has two components - nutrition and exercise, Marisa will also consult her clients on a healthy diet, caloric intake, and macronutrient consumption that are best suited for their fitness goals. Whether their goal is to lose the extra ten pounds or increase muscle mass, Marisa will challenge her clients every time they step into the gym. She likes to think outside the box, is very driven and creative, and guarantees fast results for her clients, usually within a few weeks of starting her custom-made program. By enrolling in a personal training program, her clients will have someone who will hold them accountable for their health and wellness every step of the way, keeping them focused on their fitness and health goals.

Exercising for Two

uts are a nutritious treat! They contain mostly “good,” unsaturated fat and a variety of heart-healthy components like fiber, plant sterols and arginine, which widens and relaxes blood vessels. Hazelnuts, pistachios, cashews and other nuts contain great benefits, but here are some special examples:

regnant women don’t have to give up endorphin rushes or the other great benefits of exercise. The American Pregnancy Association recommends the following types of exercise for pregnant women:

N

ALMONDS: Almonds contain Vitamin E, which helps the body develop healthy nerves and cells in the heart and lungs, and may help stop plaque buildup in arteries. One ounce of almonds contains 8% of your daily calcium—as much as one-third of a cup of milk! WALNUTS: One ounce contains omega-3 fatty acids, Vitamin E and 8% of the daily value of folate, a B vitamin that protects against birth defects and may also help fight cancer and heart disease. BRAZIL NUTS: According to the Journal of Nutrition, selenium may help protect against cancer. Brazil nuts have about 210 times as much selenium as other nuts! “Be aware that there are certain medical conditions that can be affected by eating nuts.”

P

WALKING: Wear good shoes to decrease pressure on your feet and avoid slipping when participating in this safe activity. SWIMMING: Considered the safest exercise for pregnant women by many health care professionals, swimming offers a toning, cardiovascular workout without adding stress to the joints. KEGEL: While Kegel exercises may not be beneficial for aerobics or aesthetic improvements, they are hugely beneficial for bladder control, hemorrhoid prevention, and stronger pelvic muscles that contribute to easier delivery. Also, they can be done anywhere, without anyone knowing! Remember to stay away from high-stress activities like water-skiing and talk to your doctor before making any changes to your exercise regimen during pregnancy.

Health Tips for Women in Their 20s, 30s, 40s A Short Course In Taking Care of You

W

omen are adept at caring for others, but not always for themselves,” says Annette Cozzarelli-Franklin, MD, Medical Director of the Women’s Health Center at Clara Maass Medical Center. She advises that women establish regular medical screenings and healthy lifestyle habits beginning in their 20s, with modifications through their 40s to promote healthy aging.

IN YOUR 20s “Women in their 20s are beginning an exciting time in their careers and education goals. However, they need to give themselves time for routine health screenings,” says Dr. Cozzarelli-Franklin. A routine physical with a primary care physician is a good starting point. It’s important to know your family medical history and have immunization records for review. This is a good time to catch up on immunizations that are lacking. The HPV (human papillomavirus) vaccine, which can be received up to age 26, protects against certain types of cancer. Routine blood work testing is determined by your physician but usually includes cholesterol and blood sugar. Gynecology visits also begin in the 20s, and screening guidelines regarding PAP smears and STD testing are determined by your gynecologist as they apply to you. Contraception options and family planning should also be discussed. Have an eye examination at least every five years, more often if there are concerns. Breast self-exams are encouraged. Skin screening depends on your family history, but you should routinely do skin self-screening, looking for any changes.

IN YOUR 30s “In this decade, many women are juggling family as well as work, which can demand most of your time—but making time for your health is imperative,” says Dr. Cozzarelli-Franklin.

Annette Cozzarelli-Franklin, MD

Skin screening and eye exams should take place every two years, depending on the findings. See your gynecologist yearly for a pelvic exam. Pregnancy should include close monitoring and a Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccine should be given to protect newborns. Any concerns about depression need prompt evaluation by your physician, especially during the postpartum period.

IN YOUR 40s In this decade, many women are handling careers and family responsibilities, and also beginning to care for aging parents. “These responsibilities can increase stress and make it easier to neglect yourself,” says Dr. Cozzarelli-Franklin. Along with previously recommended screenings, yearly mammograms for women of average risk should begin no later than age 45, according to the American Cancer Society. An EKG (electrocardiogram) should be done at least once during this decade as a baseline recording of the heart. Perimenopause occurs during this decade, causing hormonal fluctuations as well as changes in weight, blood pressure and sleep patterns. Discuss these changes and how to address them with your physician. In this decade, healthy habits to decrease stress through relaxation and exercise are important tools.

Continue with your yearly physical exam, and discuss your exercise and diet for a healthier you. Annual blood work, including thyroid function, is important because thyroid disease is more prevalent during this decade.

“Health in the 20s through the 40s ultimately involves knowing your body, making healthy lifestyle choices and seeing your physician for routine screenings and any other concerns that may come along,” says Dr.

Women may notice their metabolism is slower in their 30s, so it’s important to have healthy eating habits, including fruits and vegetables; to try to get at least seven hours of sleep each night; and to exercise routinely. Weight-bearing exercise is important, since bones reach their maximum strength during the early part of this decade.

Cozzarelli-Franklin. “Women do so well in caring for others. Now it’s time to put ourselves on the list.”

New England Comes to By Dan Epstein

H

ere’s exciting news for seafood fans. Jack’s Seafood Shack in Montclair has not just captured the spirit of New England Style seafood, their food is simply as good as it gets. Owner Jack Tabibian fell in love with lobster shacks while vacationing in Maine with his wife, Aline. Noticing that there was nothing like them outside of the seaside tourist areas, he acted. Jack and co-owner/manager Greg Markarian will happily tell you that local folks have fallen in love with Maine-style seafood, just as Jack did. In fact, Greg mentions that in addition to the many 50

Suburban Essex

frequent customers, people finding them through the internet come from as far away as Princeton or Staten Island, finding that the service is so warm and friendly that as first-time visitors they immediately feel like regulars. Most New England shacks are merely stands, though at Jack’s Seafood Shack there are plenty of tables, the atmosphere is comfortable and casual. Maine Lobsters are delivered twice a week and are on display in the two large tanks in one of the dining rooms.

March 2020

Jack’s Seafood Shack menu goes far beyond the basic New England shack. At the heart of it: lobster. Whole Maine Steamed Lobster arrives at your table cracked for you and ready to eat accompanied by corn on the cob, homemade Cole Slaw, and melted butter. It’s worth noting that for those who do not want the traditional approach, they will happily serve the lobster completely removed from the shell. Those who want a little red meat in addition should opt for the Steak and Lobster Tails—two 4oz Maine lobster tails are served with an 8oz. filet mignon along with French fries and a House Salad.

Greg Markarian and Jack Tabibian

Bloomfield Avenue The Lobster Mac and Cheese, a generous serving of lobster, macaroni, white cheddar and topped with a dusting of breadcrumbs, is one of their most popular dishes. Norwegian Salmon and Sea Scallops with sautéed vegetables features a thick slice of salmon and a couple of tender sea scallops. Both are perfectly grilled with Butternut Squash and Brussel Sprouts on the side. Pasta gets a seafood spin here in their Linguine in Garlic Sauce which is rich with shrimp, mussels, and lobster.

The Lobster Bomb is almost just that— an individual toasted round sourdough loaf, hollowed out and filled with a 1/2 lb. of lobster meat, and topped with their homemade Lobster Bisque. It is the bomb. Lovers of crab legs are not overlooked when it comes to the Crab Pot—a 1/2 lb. each of Snow and Dungeness Crab legs served with mussels, clams, shrimp, potatoes, corn, Calabasas sausage and seasoned with Old Bay.

March 2020

Jack’s Seafood Shack has faithfully brought the very essence of the New England seaside fare to Essex County. And they have not only done it really well but have blown past it with many seashores inspired offerings. And, it is worth noting that in warm weather there is outdoor seating and plenty of parking at the MAM parking lot across the street.

Diamond Minds

The Soul of Success

T

his month I had the pleasure of sitting down with Robert Randolph for a close-up interview. Rolling Stone magazine calls Robert Randolph one of the top 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time! He is an inspiration to the likes of Eric Clapton, Carlos Santana and Derek Trucks, all of whom have played with him and studied his technique. Look for his new album release “Brighter Days” produced by Dave Cobb.

to play and scream up to the house, “Turn that off! Come outside and play. Get in trouble with us!” My friends would come over playing video games and I would just be happy providing the entertainment music while I was waiting for my next turn. They would say, “Oh man! You’re getting pretty good on that thing!” BF: So you lived and breathed the music and instrument every day? RR: Yes, every day I lived and breathed it and it helped keep me out of trouble when I was a teenager. Growing up in Irvington there was a lot of stuff going on. Playing basketball, playing the guitar, playing video games and going to church. Those activities kept me busy, kept my mind busy and kept me out of trouble. BF: You’re in an industry where lots of people would like to breakthrough like you’ve done. Talk to me about what you’ve learned about adversity and dealing with pressure over the years and how you look at it today?

Barry Farber: Tell me about your passion for the music and how it all got started. Robert Randolph: In the very beginning I was learning how to play the lap steel, pedal steel guitar. I was just trying to be as good as the guys I was watching play in church. My church has a long history of all the guys playing lap steel, pedal steel guitar. All my friends would hear me trying

RR: What’s funny now is realizing I’ve been in the mix of everything you could imagine… Sex, drugs, rock ‘n’ roll! All of the sketchy characters and parties in the Hollywood hills and the penthouses in Manhattan. Late nights. I’ve seen so much sketchy stuff. A very different world… It’s called the world that doesn’t sleep. My secret is I always have my family and they call me all day long. I have a big family that’s spread all across the US

so they’re always saying, “Where are you? I need you to Barry Farber come to church this weekend.” Or my Aunt’s will say, “Hey, I need you to come change my battery in the car, take out the trash, take me to Home Depot.” All of those things keep you together, rooted and grounded. So for me I can never really go too far away from family. In this day and age the family has sort of been forgotten about. I keep my family close. BF: Who do you look up to as role models? RR: My two role models are Bruce Springsteen and BB King. BB King has done everything a man can possibly do. He continued to tour until the day he died. Bruce Springsteen is a New Jersey guy, he’s a regular guy and down to earth. He’s comfortable in his own shoes and rooted and grounded. BF: What’s your definition of success? RR: My definition of success is to really make people happy, make music and obviously get paid while you’re doing it. Ultimately one day ending up in the rock ‘n’ roll Hall of Fame. For a kid like me playing this instrument where people say you can’t be a main stream artist just playing that instrument, it would be a great accomplishment.
