50 Aniversario . 50th Aniversary Tonislar

Ahora que estamos aguantando estas calores es cuando conviene recordar la importancia que tienen los toldos para protegernos del calor, ya que aparte de darnos sombra hace que las paredes donde da el sol no se calienten tanto. A parte tambien nos resguardan del viento y aquí en Menorca donde hay tanta humedad hace que no caiga esta encima de nosotros en las típicas cenas al aire libre que tanto se hacen en verano.

Asi que este elemento vital para tener un mejor verano ha sido el eje central de la mayor empresa de toldos de la isla, Tonislar, que cumple en este 2023 sus 50 años protegiéndonos de todos estos elemento para ayudarnos a sobre vivir el verano.

Antonio Dominguez Dominguez llegó a la isla con solo 6 años, procedente de Gararoza (Huelva), cuando falleció su padre. Su madre y una hermana se quedaron en el pueblo atendiendo un pequeño establecimiento y tanto a Antonio como a su hermano los enviaron a Es Mercadal donde ya vivía su abuela que había venido años antes para trabajar.

Now that we are enduring these hot temperatures, it is essential to remember the importance of awnings in protecting us from the heat. Apart from providing shade, they also help prevent the walls from heating up when exposed to the sun. Additionally, they offer shelter from the wind, which is especially beneficial in humid places like Menorca, where they prevent the typical outdoor dinners from being disturbed by falling moisture.

Tonislar, the largest awning company on the island, has made this vital element for a better summer its core business for the past 50 years, protecting us from these elements and helping us survive the heat.

Antonio Dominguez Dominguez arrived on the island at the age of 6, coming from Gararoza (Huelva), after his father's passing. His mother and one sister stayed in the village to tend a small establishment, while Antonio and his brother were sent to Es Mercadal, where their grandmother lived after having moved there years before to work.

Pasó toda su infancia en Es Mercadal hasta que se fue a Francia a trabajar con 18 años, luego volvió y se enamoró de una chica de Mahon con la que se acabo casando y teniendo 6 hijos que son los que actualmente llevan la empresa.

Empezó a trabajar con el taxi y en uno de esos viajes llevó al representante de Tolder en un trayecto del aeropuerto a Cala Galdana, donde le comento a que se dedicaba y la falta de gente que se dedicará a ello en la isla. Así que empezó a trabajar con ellos.

Rapidamente se dio cuenta que lo que tenia que hacer era fabricar los toldos, se asocio con otro “Toni” y ahí nació Tonislar, de la union de dos “Tonis” y la palabra “Lar” que significa hogar. Este socio duró un par de años y entonces emprendió su carrera empresarial en solitario llegando a cambiar hasta 5 veces de tienda, abriendo tambien tienda en Ciutadella, siempre ampliando el negocio y la maquinaria para fabricar.

He spent his entire childhood in Es Mercadal, then went to France to work at the age of 18. After returning, he fell in love with a girl from Mahon, whom he eventually married and had six children with. These children are now the ones running the company.

He started working as a taxi driver and, during one of his trips, he gave a ride to a representative from Tolder, who mentioned the lack of people working in the awning business on the island. That's when Antonio decided to work with them.

Soon after, he realized that he should start manufacturing the awnings himself. He partnered with another "Toni," and that's how Tonislar was born, from the combination of two "Tonis" and the word "Lar," meaning home. This partnership lasted for a couple of years, and then Antonio embarked on his solo entrepreneurial journey, changing locations up to five times, and even opening a store in Ciutadella. He constantly expanded the business and the machinery for production. The first machine he used, still visible in their current facility in PIMA, was a modified Singer shoe sewing machine adapted for sewing canvas.

Su primera maquina, que se puede ver en la actual nave que tienen en PIMA, fue una maquina de coser zapatos Singer con una modificación para poder emplearla para coser lona.

Durante varios años compartió el taxi y su desempeño en Tonislar hasta que decidió volcar todos sus esfuerzos en crear la que es la mayor empresa de toldos de la isla, incluso trabajando tambien en Mallorca e Ibiza.

Jubilado desde hace 12 años sus hijos han ido ampliando el negocio y ahora en Tonislar tambien puedes alquilar material para eventos como carpas o sillas.

Una empresa muy familiar, con una recompensa al gran esfuerzo y trabajo, con una buena visión de negocio de Antonio, donde fue invirtiendo y vendiendo inmuebles, y creando una gran base de futuro para la familia Tonislar.

For several years, he juggled both his taxi job and Tonislar until he decided to focus all his efforts on creating the largest awning company on the island, even expanding to work in Mallorca and Ibiza. Retired for the past 12 years, his children have continued to grow the business, and now Tonislar also offers rental materials for events, such as tents or chairs.

It is a very family-oriented company, with a welldeserved reward for Antonio's hard work and vision, where he invested and sold real estate, creating a solid foundation for the future of the Tonislar family.
