What Our Patients Say “Dr. Koga was incredible. Knowledgeable, sensitive, informative… I immediately felt at ease and felt confident in my receiving expert medical care. It’s rare to find a doctor that combines such personal touches and care for a patient as a person with outstanding quality of medical care. I highly recommend him to anyone looking for a specialist.”
“I was diagnosed with a brain aneurysm and Dr Koga was my neurosurgeon. He explained where the aneurysm was and the options I had. He explained both options thoroughly and answered the questions that I had and the questions of my family. He did not rush but took his time with us. He did the surgery and I have had a miraculous recovery. Back at work & doing great! Would recommend Dr Koga highly!”

Our Philosophy I believe medicine is both art and science. I offer my patients the very latest technologies, but I refuse to allow the industrialization of healthcare. Neurological diseases are very daunting and are often accompanied by psychological and family stress. The best results emerge when the surgeon and the patient are in a true partnership. We give each patient careful explanations of the anatomy and the surgical approach in each case. Beyond technical excellence in the operating room, we strive to offer each patient a caring environment, with ample education and supportive postoperative care. We do the right thing for every patient every time. We care about the individual. We answer the telephone.

Now Offering Qwo® Cellulite Injections Over stubborn cellulite? There may be a new solution for you! Cellulite is a structural phenomenon that accumulates over time and resembles an orange peel, cottage cheese, or pockmarked appearance on the buttocks and thighs. While it may seem similar to excess fat, it shouldn’t be confused with fat. Cellulite develops in both women and men; however, it is far more common in women. Some women are predisposed to cellulite, and it can even develop in women who eat well and live an active lifestyle.
Dr. Michele Cooper LEADING FEMALE PLASTIC SURGEON IN MANDEVILLE, LA
Unfortunately, cellulite is notoriously difficult to self-treat. But there is hope with the advent of innovative technologies such as Qwo® injections. Qwo® is the only FDA-approved injectable treatment for moderate to severe cellulite in your buttocks. If you are struggling with unwanted cellulite that is difficult to cover, Qwo® could change your life.
What Results Can I Expect From Qwo® Cellulite Injections? Results should be fully visible within 10 weeks. In clinical studies, women noticed reduced dimpling, with a smoother and firmer skin surface. Results will vary with each individual based on their physiology and medical history. Be sure to discuss your expectations and concerns with your provider. Results can be subtle, and Qwo® is not right for everyone. The more information you can get before the procedure, the more assurance you will have that this treatment is the one for you

here’s a saying about putting your money where your mouth is, an adage that God helps those who help themselves, and an axiom that if you want something done right, you have to do it yourself. For Lieutenant Governor Billy Nungesser, it was these very principles, coupled with the frustrations of what wasn’t being done that served as the catalyst for launching his career into politics. “When Hurricane Katrina happened, I wasn’t happy with the response,” says Nungesser. “We didn’t see any elected officials. I rescued people and animals, and we were pretty much on our own. All of the attention was on New Orleans, so I decided to run for Plaquemines Parish president to make a difference. After the oil spill, I was on CNN every night, acting as the voice of our frustration. It did not seem like we had enough officials standing up for the coast, the animals, the seafood industry, and the people who lived here and were being affected. That’s when I decided to run for lieutenant governor.” Since then, Nungesser’s career has been dedicated to making a difference and making the people of the entire state of Louisiana feel heard and recognized. “My career as lieutenant governor has been challenging because I want to fix everything,” Nungesser admits. “It’s just my nature. We never say no to anyone who calls my office. We try to find help for everyone; and as challenging as it is to spread yourself so thin, we are making a difference all over Louisiana.”

“My career as lieutenant governor has been challenging because I want to fix everything. It’s just my nature. We never say no to anyone who calls my office. ”
Naturally, his position is met with its share of challenges as he tries to meet his goals and make a lasting impact on the state. “Standing up and always doing the right thing is not a popular thing,” says Nungesser. “For instance, being against the diversion which is making millions of dollars for people on something that will not save the coast and can’t build land above the water line. The studies also show that dolphins will be extinct in the Gulf in 50 years if we build it. Yet, there has been so much money thrown at it: for advertising, buying silence, threatening local parish leaders if they come out against it and telling them that they wouldn’t get coastal money. The CPRA and the team they’ve assembled has threatened to punish people if they come out against it, but I know in my heart it is the right thing to do, to stop it and to use that money to pump river sediment.” It is the ongoing challenges that prove to the people of Louisiana that Nungesser is the right man for the job. “We saw during this last hurricane that storm surge is getting worse, not better; and people along the coast deserve to look out over the levees and see that we are installing storm surge reduction berms and ridges so that, every year, we feel better about our protection and not worse. That’s what they deserve, and that’s what they should get.” Still, Nungesser continually rises to the occasion, no matter the trials facing the people he serves. “Up until COVID, the biggest challenge we faced was funding,” he notes. “I’ve had to take millions of dollars of tourism money to fund things like internet service for the libraries for all the small parishes, services to the visually impaired—things that ought to be funded by the legislature but are often overlooked. In 2019, more than 51 million people visited Louisiana and left $1.9 million in taxes that locals didn’t have to pay. Knowing that we compete with every state for those tourism dollars,

the challenge to get those dollars back is enormous. But we have more tools in our toolbox than most states; and we treat strangers like family, so they keep coming back. We have an incredible group of leaders around the state and in the tourism industry, and I have no doubt that we will be back better and bigger than ever before.” For Nungesser, his accomplishments as lieutenant governor have been the greatest points of pride. “My goal has always been to do the best job I can and always put the people of Louisiana’s best interest first,” he says. “Rebuilding the parks and making them successful and helping Volunteer Louisiana and the many people around the state of Louisiana recover from the storm have been a great source of pride for me and my time in office. Now that Keep Louisiana Beautiful has been moved under my office at my request, cleaning up this state and getting the litter off our roadways is a new challenge and a new goal—but that’s what excites me, getting up every day and addressing the needs of Louisiana.”
Ever cognizant of the reason that he was elected in the first place, Nungesser continues to put the needs of his constituents at the forefront of his mind. “I ran from a parish of only 8,000 voters, and my two opponents were from much larger parishes,” he recalls. “I think I outworked my opponents by driving across the state; shaking as many hands as I could; and looking people in the eye, telling them that I will always get up every day and do the best job that I can. I think that people saw me during Katrina, Rita, Gustav, Ike, and Isaac and the BP oil spill, working tirelessly day and night to do all I could to help our citizens get back. People saw that and my passion for the people of Louisiana and realized that I would never give up on their best interests and putting them first.”

BELLE MAISON
BRICKS ON THE BAYOU
BY LIESEL SCHMIDT Though one might say it shares a certain commonality with Carl Andre’s “Equivalent VIII,” a sculpture that has been in residence at the Tate Gallery in London since 1972, the home built at 107 Northlake Court in Mandeville is hardly without form or solidarity. But much like the long-debated piece whose acquisition caused such great debacle, the house is a study in bricks, a tribute to these oftoverlooked materials that—when fully given their due and allowed to shine—can become an enduring work of art.

A
t 5800 square feet of living space, with 1800 square feet of outdoor living space under the home, the pile of bricks owned by Ryan and Elizabeth Wall is hardly small, its three levels of space encompassing 14 rooms that include a generous kitchen as well as formal dining and living rooms, in addition to four bedrooms and five and a half baths.
Beginning at the massive, 20-foot-wide curved solid brick staircase whose 19 steps lead to the front porch from a circular driveway—complete with a manicured garden bordering it full of cypress and mimosa trees as well as a center fountain—the home is quintessential Acadian architecture. Featuring white stucco and Hardie plank, the brickwork that serves as a foundational detail of the home is underplayed a bit, however, like a surprise hinted at but then secreted away until the perfect moment.

The house is a showstopper, a one-of-a-kind piece worthy of proud display—both inside and out. With its white columns and a wrap-around porch, the front stucco façade presents a traditional picture inspired by historic homes common to the streets of old Louisiana. Just inside, a sweeping staircase commands attention, leading up to the second level, while a beautiful chandelier claims pride of place in the foyer.

On the first level, the formal living room holds a sense of grandeur, with massive windows and a pair of chandeliers that mirror that classic décor. A corner wet bar is offset with white custom cabinetry and sleek quartz countertops. Much the same way, the formal dining room is filled with classic appeal and details, with large windows that spill light into the space and onto the 10-inch solid oak wood plank floors sourced from Poland that run throughout entire house. An enclosed porch at the other side of the home offers even more light, with floor-toceiling windows that make up the entire wall, creating a space perfect for gathering and the ideal placement for the Wall’s grand piano. “The piano room is one of our most used spaces,” says Ryan, who works as an anesthesiologist at Sterling Surgical Hospital and Lakeview Regional Medical Center and shares the home with his wife and two of their three children. “We enjoy sitting in there, listening to our children play.”

The legal industry is full of opportunities to resolve problems and form protections for your community. And in real estate specifically, we are able to do this in a fast-paced, collaborative environment impacting a vast number of people since we have been experiencing a real estate boom over the past year.
WHAT IS IT YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT YOUR INDUSTRY?
I love to see people at ease when they are done with their estate planning. They come in very apprehensive because who wants to talk about what happens when you die? But after signing everyone is relieved, and they don’t have to think about it again. Also, I love to see businesses grow and thrive. So many people have great ideas but don’t know where to start. A lot of people think of banks as places to simply open a savings or checking account or maybe as a place to get a loan. And while we certainly offer these services, there is much more to how we help people reach their financial goals. At Regions Bank, we pride ourselves on taking the time to listen to people’s unique needs and then delivering customized financial services that can help them reach their goals. We don’t believe in a one-sizefits-all approach. We think having a relationship with our customers – whether they’re individual consumers, families, or local businesses – helps us deliver greater value to the people we serve.

hile it is so often the working moms that we award the most credit for juggling it all and keeping all the balls in the air or all the plates spinning successfully, stay-at-home moms deserves equal adulation for the roles that they play. Mama bear, nurse maid, homemaker, friend and playmate, counselor and sounding board, cook, taxi driver…all those things and more are the hats that mothers wear, with a balancing act that could overwhelm even the most accomplished corporate multitasker. But they do it all with grace and humility, happily paid with love rather than money.

As the mother of a super active five-year-old little girl and a two year-old boy, as well as being the wife of a husband who works in the maritime industry and also volunteers with the St. Tammany parish sheriff’s department in his free time, Elizabeth Alario has a calendar that is filled with everything from play dates to sports— not to mention all the things she does at home, taking care of the household and keeping it all running smoothly. While she could easily feel some need to work outside of the home, Alario recognizes the importance of what she does for her family. “Being a stay-athome mom is very rewarding,” she says. “The hours are long, and there are no days off, but I wouldn’t change it for the world. The days start early with getting everyone ready for school or work and end very late, but being able to spend this time with my children

is very important for me. As she raises her two young children, she has found a great sense of pride in watching them become individuals. “I’m incredibly proud of my family,” says the 35 year-old. “Both of my children have very caring and loving personalities, and they encourage me to be better every day.”

visit to Todd S. Brasuell Pediatric Dentistry is far beyond a standard health visit. It’s a visit to your dental family! We have always taken pride in not only our team withholding a family nature, but our patients also become like family to us. It’s ultimately a warming experience like no other! We know how daunting dental visits can be, yet it is our utmost priority to rid your child of that dental fear.
In growing up with a stay-at-home, Alario hopes that her children see how much of a priority she made them. “When they’re grown and gone, I want for my children to always remember our family time together,” she says. “Family is the most important thing for me, and I want them to remember the fun times and holidays spent with our family and our love for each other. Even when things get hard or they’re facing challenges with life, we will always have love, and that is something they can carry with them forever.” Creating special memories is important to Alario, but it’s some of the everyday little things that she will always treasure the most. “Our bedtime routine is very special to me,” she says. “I get to pray alongside each of my kids. We thank God for the day that He gave us and ask Him to look over us at night. I get a big giggle when my son, Maddox, finishes the prayer with a very loud and exaggerated ‘AAAAAMEN!’” As much as she teaches them, Alario’s children have also taught her a great deal. “They have taught me a lot and continue to do so,” she says. “They’ve shown me how important it is to be yourself, to show love, and to take your time. They’ve also shown me that wounds do heal— and, of course, that it’s fun to have dessert before dinner!”
Dr. Todd Brasuell has been practicing Pediatric Dentistry on the NorthShore for 15 years. Dr. Tyler Mesa joined him in August of 2020, and together their passion for taking care of children’s dental needs is immeasurable. True Louisiana natives at heart, both of our doctors attended LSU School of Dentistry and enjoy providing the best dental care for our NorthShore community. It is our mission to treat each child as if they are our own, to deliver the highest quality dental care, to introduce dentistry to children in a fun and entertaining environment, and to emphasize preventative dentistry that will last a lifetime. We feel that creating a safe, enjoyable, and rewarding atmosphere for both children and their parents is what truly sets us apart. Our office is friendly, family-oriented and parents are always welcome. Our team is also highly experienced with special needs, in-office conscious sedation, and hospital dentistry. Being able to provide the children of our community with positive dental experiences is what fulfills our dental family!

STORY BY KAYLA BERTUCCI
L
ove is a four-legged word and an action shown by one truly inspiring woman in the Northshore community, Denise Gutnisky. Known best for her selfless nature and constant desire to give to those in need, Gutnisky is one of society’s sweethearts. Her paw-pularity certainly sprung onto the scene in 1994 with the Mardi Paws parade, which was brought to life as a parade for our furry friends in the community as a way to dress up and celebrate the season in true carnival style.
“For 27 years, Louisiana’s famed “Mardi Paws” Parade has come at the tail end of Carnival season, always rolling on the Sunday after Fat Tuesday,” explains Denise. “The Super Krewe for K9s features hundreds of canines and their companions in costumes and is truly a paw-rade with a purpose.” Listed by PARADE Magazine as one of the “Coolest Mardi Gras Celebrations Around the US,” this parade has been seen in many publications including PEOPLE Magazine, Southern Living and US Weekly, to name a few. Originally from the east coast of Florida, a small beach town called Indialantic, Denise moved to Louisiana after college. Celebrating almost 40 years of marriage, Denise and her husband, Gus, have worked in healthcare for many years. “On top of being an animal and outdoor lover, I’ve also loved being a hands-on volunteer director of Scott’s Wish. I’ve always loved helping people navigate treatment and insurance issues when they have been diagnosed with a life-threatening illness. It’s an overwhelming time for them,” shares Denise. For those of you not familiar with Scott’s Wish, it’s a nonprofit organization that helps patients and families who are going through any type of medical treatment to help close the financial gap needed not only with transportation, lodging, and meals, but also with requests such as car repairs, wheelchair ramps, and more. This organization also provides financial aid to animal welfare including dogs for veterans and therapy dogs. Denise continues her tireless efforts in the community, partnering with longtime friend Patrick Theriot, on their Mutts to Models Gala, benefiting causes close to both, Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center and St.Tammany Parish’s open admission animal shelter.

This star-studded evening consists of a runway show featuring celebrities, philanthropists, sports stars, media personalities, veterans and other heroes walking the runway with their dogs or a local animal shelter dog, all in support of charities helping people and pets. Hosted by Vampire Diaries Ian Somerhalder, this night of festivities is one that has been long awaited following Hurricane Ida, the COVID-19 spikes, and the NorthShore friends and families who’ve been longing to gather together for a night of celebration and giving back. Parish President Mike Cooper and Denise Gutnisky
Donations to the Mary Bird Perkins Cancer center helps provide necessary resources for their patients and families such as expert treatment, advanced technology and survivorship to breakthrough clinical trials and translational research. Other funds raised from the gala will benefit St. Tammany Parish’s animal shelter, which Denise says is crucial to help with the overwhelming number of pets taken in each year. “We are passionate about helping our parish’s only open admission animal shelter - St. Tammany Parish Dept. of Animal Services. For years they just didn’t get the community support they needed. They take in over 4,000 abandoned, stray and owner-surrendered animals each year and need the community’s help re-homing all these unwanted pets,” says Denise. Whether it’s healthcare or pet care, whether it’s this foundation or that, Denise Gutnisky’s heart bursts with the desire to lend a helping hand. Time, effort, and true compassion is poured into the needs of those around her. To me, that’s the kind of powerhouse you want living in your community, and that’s the type of friend you want to connect with to remind you the importance of elevating others above yourself.

HONORING SERVICE BY LIESEL SCHMIDT
W
hen we think of those who serve in the military, we think of men and women in uniform, brave individuals who swear an oath to defend their country against all enemies, foreign and domestic. We think of their sacrifice and selflessness, their dedication and bravery in knowing what they’re signing on for when they put on that uniform.
Their service is remembered and acknowledged—saluted, even. We memorialize and celebrate them, mourn their loss and try our best to offer them support when they need it. But there are still some heroes whose service goes largely unrecognized: the dogs who are trained to be battle ready and accompany teams on missions. Sadly, when their service is no longer needed, these dogs face another battle as age, health, and even emotional issues threaten the future they should be able to enjoy after years of faithful duty. Unlike humans, the dogs that serve as military working dogs (MWDs) are not recruited and offered incentive for signing on the dotted line. Rather, they are “owned” by the military and are used in all branches of service. As a K9 handler in the Army, Rick Hogg was responsible for the dog serving with his unit, keeping him trained and in shape for missions and— essentially—being like his partner. His first MWD, Marco, was a learning experience, one that taught him the importance of treating the dog in his charge as a dog, rather than as a weapon of war. Having joined the Army in 1987, Hogg had always felt destined for Special Forces and came from a line 70
SOCIAL NORTHSHORE
of military men, his grandfather having served in WWII, while his father served as a Marine in Vietnam. It wasn’t until he was approached by his command about becoming a handler, however, that Hogg even considered taking on the responsibility of a dog attached to his unit. With Marco, Hogg found his footing as a handler and learned how to navigate the challenges. “Once I learned to treat him like a dog instead of a weapon, our bond became stronger,” Hogg explains. “A big challenge is learning to read your dog’s change of behavior. These dogs ask for nothing but need everything, just like a child—but this child will save your life or the lives of the members of his pack and will give his life if needed.” It was Duco, however—Hogg’s second MWD—that made the greatest impression and became an important part of Hogg’s life. Named in honor of the very first of the elite bloodline of dogs of the Koninklijke Nederlandse Politiehond Vereniging (KNPV)—the Royal Dutch Police Dog Association— Duco became Hogg’s primary K9 in 2012 and served with him for the next five years, retiring in 2017 alongside Hogg. During that time, the pair formed an incredible bond—one that lasted the rest of his life. “What made Duco so special was his ability to switch gears,” Hogg says. “He was a very social dog but an absolute beast on the battlefield. He was a quick learner, tuned in to his environment, independent, knew no fear and the best combat asset when we would go out the door into the unknown.”
While his call to duty naturally ended, unlike retired military personnel, Duco received no retirement benefits or healthcare. So in 2020 when he was diagnosed with osteosarcoma in his right rear leg, Hogg and his family made the decision to add longevity and quality of life by having his leg amputated. The cost of treatment and surgery were, of course, covered by no health plans. Eight months later, on July 5, 2021, Combat Assault Dog Duco lost his battle with cancer.
It was Duco’s service—and that of dogs like him—that inspired Hogg to connect with Scott’s Wish, an organization whose mission is to assist with the financial burdens of those undergoing treatment for leukemia and other devastating illnesses. Partnering together with them, Hogg launched In Honor of Duco to offer assistance with specialized medical treatment once the dogs are discharged from service. Ordinarily, there’s no funding to pay for the exorbitant veterinary bills—something that In Honor of Duco makes its mission. The program honors these elite dogs who served our country in addition to raising funds for the very specialized care they may need after their military service. “I started the project to help keep Duco’s memory alive, but also so that other Special Operation Forces (SOF) K9 handlers would have a way to pay for their retired MWD medical expenses,” Hogg says. “There are no official medical programs (such as the VA) for retired military working dogs. The financial burden falls on the handler. I don’t ever want another handler to have to make a medical decision because of the possible financial hardship for their K9 partner.”
Indeed, he has honored Duco well—and honored the sacrifice of other dogs like him in doing so.

BRIDE
Michael and Savannah LOVE
By Liesel Schmidt
BLOSSOMED After meeting through mutual friends in 2015, Savannah Vicaro and Michael Arnone realized that they had more in common than just the friends they shared. The spark they felt was undeniable, and the two began dating for the next three years.

y then, Michael knew that he wanted to be with Savannah for the rest of his life, and he finally made it official in December of 2018. “We were up in Gatlinburg, Tennessee on a family vacation,” says Savannah, recalling the picturesque proposal. “We went up the mountain on a skylift to the Anakeesta attraction and we were taking pictures on the edge of the mountain under a beautiful heart backdrop, where he popped the question. It was absolutely perfect and so beautiful.”
Rivaling the beauty of that spot, Savannah walked down the aisle at the Greenery in Amite, Louisiana, wearing a white lace dress with nude undertones and a mesh back embellished with beading. “I loved my dress and knew that it was the perfect one the second I put it on,” Savannah notes. How she got to the aisle was special in itself: “Something that made our wedding incredibly unique was the fact that my grandfather drove my father and me to the entrance of the aisle in my grandpa’s 1938 Plymouth. That was very special to me,” Savannah says.

Waiting for her that day on May 14, 2021, 175 guests watched as she and Michael exchanged vows and promised to love one another forever. Appropriate to the name of the venue, the wedding color accents were gold and white with lots of greenery. Michael’s groomsmen wore tan tuxes, while Savannah’s bridesmaids wore lilac dresses. Having been pronounced married, the newlyweds joined their friends and family for an onsite reception. Dining on a vast array of food that included Jambalaya, shrimp, fish, shrimp fettuccine, pork, brisket, meatballs, egg rolls, fruit, cheese and sandwich trays, the wedding party feasted and then broke out their skills on the dance floor. “Everyone was having such a blast on the dance floor,” says Savannah. “We also had a photobooth, which was a huge hit!”

weetening up the night, the couple cut into a three-tier naked cake adorned with real lilac and white roses, crowned with a gold topper emblazoned with “Mr. & Mrs. Arnone.” Featuring a different flavor in each tier, the cake tasted of almond buttercream, cream cheese, and strawberry filling. Sending their guests off with wedding party favors that included homemade Italian cookies made by Savannah’s family and mini bottles of homemade wine made by Michael’s family, the newly married couple were sent off themselves to begin their honeymoon at Sandals Resort in Antigua. “It was our absolute dream for our honeymoon!” Savannah says.
Now back at home, the couple is back to work—she as a Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (ultrasound technologist), he as an industrial pipefitter. Every day, both are glad that they became a part of each other’s lives six years ago…and that they have forever to look forward to. 78

Dog and Howl-o-ween lovers alike came together for the 2021 Barktober Fest, which was held over Halloween weekend at Pelican Park in Mandeville and hosted by the St. Francis Animal Sanctuary. There were costume contests held for dogs big and small, pet adoptions, numerous vendors, and plenty of playing from our furry friends.
