Greetings

from the Editor Kia ora As I write this, the incidence of Covid is on the rise across the District, with ‘nearly everyone’ knowing someone who’s in quarantine. Fingers crossed, but so far it appears that the local welfare response is working splendidly. Our wonderful community connectors and service providers are filling the gaps to make sure that everyone has the food and supplies that they need; as well as a sympathetic ear on the other end of the phone. With the ‘announcement’ around vaccine mandates only days away, we’re looking toward how we’re going to support the District to bounce back, rebuilding connection, healing a few wounds and rebooting the local economy to bounce forward, even stronger than it was. There’s been some great creative thinking to date and we’re considering our place in helping some of it to come into fruition. With a bit of an autumn bite to our mornings and evenings and the nights closing in a bit, many of us will be getting the firewood in, harvesting the last of the summer vegetables into jams and pickles and getting reading to sit by the fire or under the heat pump for a few months. While I personally love the crisp winter days, for some they’re nothing but cold. Spring seems quite a way off, but what

better way to put some cheerful anticipation into life than to get the bulbs in the ground? Cancer Society are currently running a ‘bulbs of hope’ campaign. On page 7, you’ll see details for how to purchase daffodil and tulip bulbs to fill your early spring with joy, while supporting a good cause. Cancer Society certainly do have some wonderful initiatives, including a ‘Next Steps’ rehabilitation exercise program and even a writers group. This wonderfully holistic approach makes an incredible difference to those affected by cancer. I’m always really proud of the range of activities available to connect local residents. Person to Person Help Trust in Kaiapoi run a couple of social events throughout the week. See inside for ‘Fuller Kai’ lunches and the ‘Monday Mingle.’ They also run a free playgroup on a Tuesday morning to connect local mums over a cuppa. Hei konā mai - Bye for now.

9 March/April 2022 Update from Tūhaitara Coastal Park With the exception of the sounds of nature, it’s been quiet in the park recently. Several of our regular schools have had to cancel their fortnightly visits and we have had to cancel or postpone the events that we had planned for the autumn. This said, we did welcome a visit from Cashmere High School in March, following strict Covid-19 protocols of course. The young people were all social studies students. Their teachers were keen for them to learn more about the cultural significance of Tūtaepatu Lagoon and its importance as a key area for mahinga kai. Relationships between culture and nature are deeply rooted here.

As part of the 2022 Walking Festival we had planned our second Art Hike, a ranger-led walk that combines art and nature. 13 About Upstream Upstream empowers customers to impact their community by choosing quality approved businesses, who give a percentage of your sale to good causes supporting children and young people.

Our purpose Upstream exists to strengthen the wellbeing of children and young people in Aotearoa. Our platform connects customers to socially conscious businesses to generate funds for charities that support our next generation.

Our beginning Our founders were overwhelmed by the incredible amount of support needed to improve outcomes for young Kiwis. We knew that for many youth charities, raising funds was the hardest part of providing these essential services - so we came up with an innovative way to generate an ongoing stream of charitable funding.

Our model Meet Upstream’s unique ‘triple win’ model! When customers make a purchase from an Upstream supplier, that supplier donates a portion of their invoice to the good cause of the customers choosing. Customers don’t pay any extra, suppliers find new clients, and charities receive the funding they need. For more information on Upstream go to: upstream.co.nz

Services & Programmes

Peer Support North Canterbury

Comcare’s Peer Support Service supports people, through shared experience, to make sense of what is happening for them and how they want to move forward. Peer Supporters in North Canterbury can meet regularly to provide one to one in person support as a fully mobile service within the Waimakariri and Hurunui districts. Our Peer Support services are based on the internationally recognised Principles of Intentional Peer Support, summarised as Relational, Learning Focused and Purposeful.

How does it work?

Intentional and purposeful relationships allow us to review our current position, helping both parties to learn and grow. They encourage us to understand, and evaluate, our experiences. Promoting a ‘trauma-informed’ way of relating to ourselves, Peer Support pushes us to move towards. It focuses on what and where we want to be, rather than focussing on what we need to stop doing. Peer Support is not like clinical support, nor is it just like being friends. Peer Support helps people to understand each other because they’ve ‘been there’, shared similar experiences, and can model for each other a willingness to learn and grow. In Peer Support, people come together with the intention of changing unhelpful patterns and getting out of ’stuck’ places. It can help to build relationships that are respectful, mutually responsible, and potentially transformative, while feeling safe and accepting.

Peer Support Workers

Comcare Peer Supporters have had personal experience of mental illness and/or addiction. They are well trained and supported, receiving both individual and group supervision. Peer Support training assists people examine their past and current experiences, their potential strengths and vulnerabilities. They are trauma-informed, and trained in communication, boundary setting, resilience development, and self- care. Based on the principle ‘to understand, you must first experience’, Peer Support provides a supportive culture.

Referrals Peer Support is for anyone aged 18+ who is struggling with mental illness and/or addictions. People can self- refer, be referred by SMHS, their GP or other community services. Visit www.comcare.org.nz/generic-referral to complete a referral. For Peer Support, select these options from the What support is required field: • Help to understand how my mental health or addiction impacts me • Support to understand my barriers to moving forward

19 Our free information and advice service continues to be available during the Covid-19 pandemic We have kept our service going through lockdowns or when it’s been wise to close our doors for face-to-face work with our clients. Our phone and email service has been maintained throughout. The operators of our three free clinics – legal, budgeting and immigration – have been able to continue to support CAB clients by phone or electronic means when we haven’t been able to welcome clients to our office. The CAB is the best first port of call for information about people’s rights and responsibilities. We provide support with any issues people are facing as well as connecting them with available services in our area. Thanks to our CAB volunteers, we have been able to adapt quickly to the new challenges that our community is facing. This means we have continued to operate and give specific information and advice on issues such as how to get food assistance, accessing the wage subsidy, advice on employment rights and housing rights, how to navigate sometimes quite complex relationships, concerns about safety, managing financial situations, just to name a few. While this pandemic has created a crisis, people have also worked collectively to support each other through this challenging time. Community spirit is alive and well and CAB volunteers and staff are a testament to that. If you or someone you know needs information, advice or support, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with us. We’re here to help. All our services are free and confidential. You can find us at 209 High Street, Rangiora, or you can phone us on 03 313 8822 or 0800 367 222, or send us an email: northcanterbury@cab.org.nz

Everyone would like to pay their mortgage off sooner. So how can you do it? Take this example: • $360,000 mortgage over 30 years @ 4.5% per annum. • Monthly repayments are $1,824. • Which means over the term of the entire loan, repayments would total $656,581. • This includes interest of $296,582. However, if you increased your monthly repayments to $2,000 per month (that a little over $41 per week). Your total savings over the term of the loan would be $56,349. AND it would be paid off 5 years sooner! To create your own personal plan, go to the SORTED website. There are a number of useful “tools” available. https://sorted.org.nz/tools/mortgage-calculator Give it a go. You might be surprised at how easy it is to make meaningful changes to your spending each month. Small steps help produce big RESULTS! If you’d like to find out if you can make other savings, then our Financial Mentors can show you how small changes to your spending pattern could have a significant impact on your future financial stability. Phone or email us to talk about your situation: 03 315 3505 or email: servicemanager@bsnc.org.nz We’re on Facebook and www.bsnc.org.nz Our office is in the War Memorial Hall building, 1 Albert Street, Rangiora.

Funding

A New Service in the Funding Sector Philanthropy New Zealand | Tōpūtanga Tuku Aroha o Aotearoa is developing a new service to help both those seeking and distributing philanthropic funding in Aotearoa New Zealand. The vision of Match | Te Puna Taurite is a more equitable, accessible and collaborative funding system. It aims to more easily connect those with funds to those that seek them.

What is Match | Te Puna Taurite? Fundseekers: • Post funding requests to get in front of multiple funders with one action. • Key groups Match | Te Puna Taurite seeks to help are small charities and those supporting Māori, Pasifika, rainbow, refugee and new migrant and disabled communities. • Will have a stronger voice into the funding system to support ongoing positive change.

Funders: • Can choose to be alerted to new funding opportunities, for example if funders have an interest in a particular type of work or activity in a location they will be alerted. • Connect with each other on the platform, creating new opportunities for collaboration and co-funding possibilities. • Search to find a charity/ies delivering the service you want to support. Match | Te Puna Taurite (MTPT) will be a helpful tool after an emergency, when both global and local funders are looking at who they can donate to, to help with the response. Those charities responding to urgent community needs during an emergency have no time for funding proposals, and MTPT will significantly reduce this current burden. Through MTPT, funders could quickly identify community groups who need additional financial support. There will be a subscription to participate. However for tier 4 organisations, (under $140,000 pa expenditure) membership is free. Match | Te Puna Taurite will launch on Monday 28 March 2022. You can stay updated by subscribing to their newsletter online at: philanthropy.org.nz/match-your-funding-place

Walk Waitaha Explore Canterbury this autumn with Walk Waitaha; an initiative promoting a series of self-guided walks and fun walking activities for you, your family and friends to enjoy. A perfect chance to connect to nature while moving your body and discovering parts of Canterbury Waitaha you may have never seen before. With the cooler air of autumn and changing colour of the leaves, what better way to help connect your kids to nature than with the Toyota Kiwi Guardians activity programme! Kids can earn medals while exploring Kiwi Guardian sites as well as learning about their surroundings. With two options in the Waimakariri area, make a day of it, bring a picnic lunch and explore Ashley Gorge or the beautiful Wooded Gully in Mt Thomas Forest on the recently upgraded Kererū Loop Track. Discover an adventure near you - doc.govt. nz/parks-and-recreation/places-to-go/ toyota-kiwi-guardians For the more creative type, visit Tūhaitara Coastal Park for a walk with a difference. The Tūhaitara Coastal Park Art Hike is a self-guided walk which takes you around Te Kohanga Wetlands and onto Pegasus

Beach where we encourage you to create a unique piece of beach art - you'll need a garden rake or something similar to help you get creative! This idea is inspired by a talented Pegasus resident who draws beautiful mandala designs on the beach. Post your artwork on the Walk Waitaha Facebook page or via email tkot.enquiries@farmside.co.nz Download the walk map here bit.ly/3KH5zOG If you’re keen for a bigger adventure, jump on the bus and head into the city these school holidays to explore the hidden worlds of Ōtautahi. Lace up your sneakers and walk this activity trail, exploring Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna o Waiwhetū, Tūranga Central Library, Canterbury Museum and the Christchurch Botanic Gardens. Pick up a map of the trail from any of the above venues and get walking around the central city. Check out more places to walk around the Waimakariri District here visitwaimakariri.co.nz/walks To discover other walks, see the Christchurch City Council What’s On page – ccc.govt.nz/walkwaitaha
