Greetings
from the Editor Kia ora koutou Hi everyone Five winter days in the Waimakariri.... On Friday night I attended the opening of the Kaiapoi Art Expo. Such an incredible array of talent! This was followed up on Saturday night with the wonderful, family friendly Fire and Ice Night Market. On Sunday afternoon, a group of our Youth Councillors and WaiYouth members joined many dedicated locals in the Ashley River clean-up, removing couches, car doors, wheels (lots of wheels) fridges and all manner of debris from our beautiful Ashley River. At the post-clean-up gathering we sat around eating pizza and playing a few team building games. What struck me, was how incredibly engaging, positive and passionate these young people were. They had great stories, strong aspirations that they were determined to fill and were kind, respectful, empathetic and interested in each person as they shared their experiences. Tonight, I am booked for the first in the GLOW Global Locals of Waimakariri Cooking Classes. These have run for three years now and are most popular - 11 cuisines over 11 classes!
There are still a few spaces; and you can book on the GLOW Global Locals of Waimakariri Facebook page. Tomorrow night I am attending the Satisfy Food Rescue annual fundraising quiz night. In the last year Satisfy have ‘rescued’ over 130 tonnes of quality food from growers and suppliers across Canterbury. Rather than going to landfill this was distributed to Foodbanks and social support groups across our District and further afield. Winter, gets a bad rap. Yes, it’s cold, but the days are so often stunning; and in a District like ours there’s plenty to do, thanks to the creative, hardworking people who make up our community groups and organisations. Much of it is free and doing something new or learning something new lifts the spirits. See inside for more to learn and do over the coming month. Kia pai tō rā Enjoy your day
Tessa

TimeBank Waimakariri Coordinator Kia ora Koutou My name is Mandy Palmer and I took over the role of TimeBank Waimakariri Coordinator from Martin Pugh on 1 July. Since May 2020 I have been living the lifestyle block dream on 12 acres in Eyrewell Forest with my hubby Daniel, our two teenagers, two calves, one elderly cat and a possum. Before that we lived in Waikuku for 16 years where I was involved with the Waikuku Artists Inc. I have also been involved with the Pegasus Bay Art Show and Arts Canterbury. I am really excited to be able to utilise the skills I have gained within these arts organisations to help support the TimeBank Waimakariri community, and I look forward to seeing it grow and flourish. TimeBank is a way of offering your skills and connecting with your community. It’s a system that values everyone’s time and skills as equal, no matter what you have to offer, which is something that really resonated with me. If you are interested in learning more about TimeBank you can contact me at tbwaimakariri@gmail.com or phone me on 021 0265 4071. Volunteering Canterbury’s 2021 Volunteer Recognition Awards Steve Baker, from Loburn, was recognised at Volunteering Canterbury’s 2021 Volunteer Recognition Awards held during National Volunteer Week in June. Steve has volunteered with Big Brothers, Big Sisters North Canterbury since 2016. Initially he was matched with a young child with limited opportunities for safe interactions. Steve committed to spending a minimum of an hour a week for 12 months. However, the match lasted longer than this and achieved milestones which include the building of a wooden play fort, farming and animal care and learning how to cook. Steve then paired with another child whose mother is confined to a wheelchair and has made an incredible difference in this child’s life. Together, Steve and his mentee helped make his mother a raised garden for her birthday and today, this twelve-year-old helps her to cook the vegetables that she grows in that garden. On top of this, Steve is always willing to help the organisation itself, he supports new
mentors, acts as a “handyman” and hosts groups at his own property. In nominating him for this award Big Brothers Big Sisters North Canterbury recognised his contribution to the young people he has worked with and to the organisation itself and just how lucky they were to have him. Big Brothers Big Sisters provides and matches adult volunteer mentors to children aged 6 to 12 years old, who just need a bit of extra support and one-to-one attention. They must meet for 1 hour, one day a week for a minimum of a year. Our children and volunteers are all within the North Canterbury region which is north of the Waimakariri River up to, and including, the Cheviot region. 6 Healthy Day at the Pa at Tuahiwi Marae Last Friday of the month. Begins at 10am ending with shared Kai at 12.30pm. Everyone to bring enough Kai for two not twenty two.
Update from Tūhaitara Coastal Park Greg and I delighted to take part in the Pegasus volunteer expo as part of National Volunteer Week in June. We enjoyed talking with many of our local friends and supporters as well as making new connections with people keen to get involved in predator control and tree planting activities. We thank our lucky stars for the good relationships we have with so many of our neighbours. Like many people across Aotearoa, stars have been significant for us this month. In our latest environmental project we have created a series of nine new biota nodes inspired by Matariki. The arrangement of the new nodes mirror the Matariki star cluster. The planting at each new pond will take inspiration from the individual meanings and symbolism behind the each of the matariki stars. Greg and Rex have installed single solar-powered lights at each node, so at night when you face east from the Tūtaepatu Lagoon lookout, nine lights twinkle in the dark just like the stars. We also marked Matariki with a storytelling and poetry night walk. Check out our collective poem below, it was created by those who came on the walk.
We are not alone
Mesmerising - majestic - miraculous Life-enhancing - vast connectedness - wairua Map in the sky showed them the way To Aotearoa where I live today Whetu stars - freckles whiti Tīpuna I see you shining Smiling down on me It’s very hard to believe When you stand and see such beauty That we’re alone Dawn of the universe Light years away Who is watching us? In contrast to contemplating the immensity of the universe, our visiting home school group has been looking at the microscopically small dimensions of our world. They looked at cell structures under the microscope and created 3-D plant cell models showing the internal components. Nature is a source of wonder at every scale. To find out more about the coastal park and Te Kōhaka o Tūhaitara Trust visit our website: tuhaitarapark.org.nz or follow us on Facebook at Friends of Tūhaitara Coastal Park.

Pacific Island Hope Mission We are a local not-for-profit charity based in Rangiora and we send donated educational and medical/hospital supplies via container to the Pacific Islands to fulfill requests for assistance from the poor and needy. We started this after Cyclone Gita in February 2018 and with the help of the N.Z Defence Force - Army gathered an estimated 500+ desks and chairs and school gear for a badly damaged school in Apia. Since then we have been sending approximately 2 x 40’ containers per year and involve locals here to help us gather, sort, pack, and load the gear which we collect from around Canterbury, and further afield. We have also made good use of the Corrections Department PD workers with loading our most recent 40’ container. This arrived late May in Apia, and included desk-top computers for a community programme for ESOL training for many hundreds of seasonal workers, and an on-line training for a certificate in aged care so that workers can travel to Australia with a qualification suitable for working in the aged care area. Also included were 40 yoga mats for a community exercise programme, a large quantity of household linen, clothing and shoes for the Samoa Victim Support Group and the Gosham Trust and the local ‘Ladies Committee’ to distribute to those most in need, gardening equipment for an ongoing community garden project, cooking gear for the healthy school lunch initiative, and hospital beds, linen, walking frames, a sit/stand patient hoist, commode chairs, and a medicine dispensing cabinet for the ‘simulated’ aged care training facility. School reading books, stationery, school desks and cabinets, chairs and games were
8 included from donations from various North Canterbury and Canterbury schools. We included prothesis bras and inserts for the Samoa Cancer Society, and 100 reusable sanitary pad kits kindly donated from Days for Girls to be distributed via a rural hospital’s community nurse. The hand sanitizer comes in 1L gel pump bottles (rrp$21), and 5L refill containers (rrp$69). We would like to donate this hand sanitizer to community groups and those interested in return for a koha to help cover our purchase price, and hopefully also be able to raise funds for further freight costs to send gear to Tonga and possibly also Fiji later this year. The cost of one 20’ container including fees here and landing port taxes etc. is approximately $9,000, and $12,000 for a 40’. Kia ora koutou katoa. Nga mihi mahana ki a koutou. This message is intended to share updated information on the co-design progress regarding the new service Te Whiri Ora weaving wellbeing. Right Service Right Time has undergone a co-design process to develop a new pathway which replaces the Children’s Team and supports tamariki, rangitahi and whānau that present with multiple issues and require an integrated response from more than one service/provider. Hopefully some of you have attended at least one of our engagement hui, as we have sought consultation and feedback from stakeholders across the region. Attached to this message is the illustrated pathway for Te Whiri Ora. Some of the areas we are endeavouring to respond to are: • Prioritising an equitable and timely response for Māori and Pasifika tamariki and whānau to address disparities. • Designing a response which places tamariki, rangitahi and whānau in the centre and supports them to have a strong voice in identifying their hopes and support needs. • Creating an environment where there is transparency with whānau regarding when, how and with whom their information is being shared or discussed. • Removing barriers to a co-ordinated response by shifting away from criteria, thresholds and by using everyday language.
• Responding to the varied and unique needs identified across the Canterbury region, including Ashburton, Selwyn, Waimakariri and Hurunui as well as Christchurch City. We are currently in the process of designing the website which will be one place where a Request for Service form will be, as well as other information about the pathway and approach for professionals and whānau. Kate Walkinshaw, from Family Works Presbyterian Support and Aroha Wetere, from Purapura Whetu have been appointed to share the Clinical Lead position for the approach and will be taking opportunities to engage and introduce themselves to groups and teams across the sector. The process of identifying host agencies for the Kaiwhiri/Co-ordinator positions is underway and these roles will be shared across Waipuna St John of God, Presbyterian Support, Barnardos and Purapura Whetu. The model will include some designated resource in each of Ashburton and North Canterbury in response to community voices. In the near future these positions will be advertised jointly under the Right Service Right Time name. If you are supporting tamariki, rangitahi and whānau where co-ordination of services would enable them to better meet their goals, you can request support by contacting the Right Service Right Time Te Whiri Ora Clinical Leads in the following ways:
15 • Kate Walkinshaw on 027 886 5780 or email katew@psusi.org.nz, or • Aroha Wetere on 022 059 6305 or email aroha@pw.maori.nz The Right Service Right Time Governance Group are appreciative of the interest and engagement from those who have made enquiries and attended our hui over the past few months. We are also grateful to those who have maintained a commitment to attending the panel hui in order to support
whānau who were previously receiving a Children’s Team response, and to progress the thinking about how these processes will operate as we move forward together. 25 About the Incredible Years programme Incredible Years is a 14-week parenting programme for parents of children aged 3-8 years. It involves weekly sessions of around two hours. Over the weeks, parents develop strategies to build positive relationships with their children and learn how to manage problem behaviours. Parents come to group sessions each week, talk through what has, or hasn’t worked, set goals for their parenting, and develop ways to achieve those goals during the following week. Topics covered during the program include: • • • • • •
how to play/spend special time together praising and rewarding children communicating positively setting limits dealing with disobedience, selectively using distractions, ignoring, time out and other penalties helping children to problem-solve.
The programme spends a lot of time looking at how parents can develop strong relationships with their children, through play and spending time together. The programme then looks at encouraging the behaviours that parent would like to see, through the use of praise and encouragement. Consequences such as time out and loss of privilege are used selectively, once clear and sensible limits and rules have been tried. The Incredible Years programme is extensively tested. With a 30-year history, the programme now operates successfully in a wide range of countries. Programmes in New Zealand show reductions in problem behaviour across a range of families.

Doing Well for Those Who Want to do Good.
Presented by Associate Professor Billy Osteen and Dr Hilary Dutton, Postdoctoral Fellow : University of Canterbury Immediately after the 2010 and 2011 earthquakes, thousands of University of Canterbury students provided relief and inspiration by assisting residents across the city. This Student Volunteer Army exemplified UC's vision of "preparing people to make a difference" and led to the creation of a course, CHCH101: Rebuilding Christchurch, that has been dedicated to facilitating student led projects. Last year, these efforts informed the design and launch of the Bachelor of Youth and Community Leadership. This seminar will share research conducted with the first cohorts of these students to discern their motivations and intentions for embarking on this programme and how the analysis is influencing our iterative curriculum process.

34 Workshop: Governance Bites: Bite #3: Better Board Decision Making Tuesday 17 August, 5.15pm-7pm Facilitated by Garth Nowland-Foreman, LEAD Registration essential (please include dietary requirements - pizza on arrival!) outreach@volcan.org.nz Non-profit boards only have authority as a group. What's the different dynamics between individual and group decision-making? And what key difference in approach is required when making routine decisions, and when looking to innovate to at least ensure we know what all the options are (beyond the same old-same old)? How can understanding the three key 'mindsets' that people can bring to the governance decision-making help us make better decisions, and help us ensure we are asking the right questions. This session will provide participants with two useful tools that will help you in making better group decisions. Fit for Funding Tuesday 21 September, 1-2pm Presenter: Liz Stephenson, DIA Venue: Christchurch Community House, 301 Tuam Street RSVP outreach@volcan.org.nz So you want funding and want to make sure you have everything in place to get through the hoops?! Workshop: Governance Bites: Bite #4: Keeping it Legal: Incorporation, Duties and Conflict of Interest Tuesday 21 September, 5.15pm-7pm Facilitated by Garth Nowland-Foreman, LEAD Registration essential (please include dietary requirements - pizza on arrival!) outreach@volcan.org.nz While staying on the right side of the law is not the end of your work as a non-profit board member, it is a good place to start. In this session we will briefly look at how laws (written and unwritten) impact on your organisation. We will also remind ourselves what being incorporated means, why it is important, and how to avoid losing its crucial protections. Finally, we will uncover why Conflicts of Interest are not a problem, but how we deal with them can be if we don’t follow three simple rules
