Greetings
from the Editor Kia ora koutou The past few weeks have been rather bleak, to say the least. With four weather events in one month, people are assuring one another that “soon it will be spring” and that “the nights are drawing out”, but it does feel rather like cold comfort. Looking toward August, I have been thinking about spring cleaning. Perhaps in the depths of these gloomy winter’s days it’s not silly to take a bit of time to freshen up our lifestyles. Over the winter months, staff have been working with Active Canterbury on a regional promotion, originally named Active August, which has turned into an initiative, called ‘Wellbeing Bingo’, a fun way to get motivated and start moving more! The idea is that you tick off a series of activities and finish the month a brighter happier, fresher version of yourself. The Community Team are all geared up and looking forward to getting on board and encouraging others across the Council to get active this August. You’ll find Wellbeing Bingo forms in District Libraries and around the community, or search on-line to download the template. When you’ve worked up an appetite, why not freshen up your evening meal
repertoire with one of several cooking class series on offer across the District? See details inside, or check out GLOW (Global Locals of Waimakariri) Hope Community Trust, Kaiapoi Community Garden, TimeBank Waimakariri or Food Secure North Canterbury Facebook Pages for details of everything from a suite of ethnic classes, to vegan, to cooking sustainably or on a budget. In the current economic environment, many are struggling to keep themselves and their family well fed without breaking the bank. Over a generation or two, we appear to have lost some of the skills and/or the space to grow, prepare, or preserve good healthy produce. The aim of the Food Secure North Canterbury is to create communities where there is equitable access to food and where people are empowered with the skills and connections that will keep them well fed. The implications are huge in terms of social impact. Exciting times. Manaaki koutou katoa. Blessings.

Community Profile
Kia ora!
Hello
I recently joined the Community Team as one of the Community Development Facilitators here at the WDC, focusing on Family Violence Prevention and Alcohol & Drug Harm. I originally hail from Michigan in the U.S. and have a solid Midwestern accent to prove it. I live locally with my husband and young son (no pets to speak of…yet!), and can often be found on the hunt for a new playground, hosting a game night, or watching a good movie. I have ten years of experience in the not-for-profit sector, primarily focused on empowering young people to be present, active, and ready to learn in their communities. This work has taken me to places as diverse as Tajikistan, China, Malaysia, and most recently here in New Zealand where I’ve spent the last few years managing volunteer wellbeing and programme delivery across Te Waipounamu for GirlGuidingNZ. These experiences have provided me with strong skills in communication and team development, and a really helpful perspective to work from as I pivot to council work. I’m excited to join such an incredible team, supporting our local communities together. Please feel free to contact me TuesdaysThursdays from 8.30am-5pm at alyssa.bright@wmk.govt.nz or 0800 965 468.
I have just joined the team at Presbyterian Support Upper South Island as their HomeShare Coordinator, based in Rangiora. This is a role I am very excited about as I have a ‘passion for people,’ especially older people. HomeShare brings a small group of older people, who may be socially isolated, together in a Volunteers HomeShare Host’s private home for friendship, fun, laughter and a meal. In some areas, we also have a van service which can safely deliver clients to the HomeShare for a minimal donation. The feedback I have received from participants demonstrates that this service is invaluable within the community. Some of our clients and hosts have been a part of HomeShare for several years and can’t speak highly enough of the difference it has made in their lives. Not only do they connect with others, they also go out walking together, have lunch at various venues and engage in some entertaining activities at the Host’s home in a warm, welcoming environment. Consequently, we are always on the hunt for more hosts to offer their time, home and hospitality so we can continue to enable these social connections to happen. If this service is of interest to you, give me a call on 027 413 2296, 03 261 2880 or my email is kimj@psusi.org.nz We’d love you to join our team!

6 Update from Tūhaitara Coastal Park
July/August
Kia ora koutou from the rangers! Next time you are biking or walking through the park, look out for our informative kōwaro signs located at the northern and southern ends of the park. Kōwaro (Canterbury mudfish) are critically threatened endemic fish. Therefore our translocation project in partnership with the University of Canterbury is important to improve their populations and genetic diversity. The humble little fish currently reside in some of our biota-nodes, including some of the older biota-nodes maintained by school groups.
Pine removal and planting of native species be useful for sheltering frost sensitive plants established in the future such as makomako wineberry. The biota-node already has duckweed covering the pond and raupo which were likely transferred by birds.
Woody weed removal and control on new biota-node Along Pines Beach wetland, the team has been busy removing and suppressing woody weeds such as pine and broom to uncover hidden biota-nodes which haven’t been planted with native species yet. We have planted species such as harakeke, carex secta, tī kōuka, seven finger, five finger and māpou. Surrounding pine will
Our rangers collected rubbish from down near the Waimakariri River mouth in their most recent beach run. This included a car bumper, car seat, a tyre and other car parts. The rest of the beach is looking fantastic including our dune restoration plantings from last year. Recently, the park has been feeling the wrath of winter with morning frosts and heavy rain. At Pines Beach wetland, the team used a mini digger for trail maintenance and repair for flooded areas to divert water from the trails.
7 Although some of the trails were flooded, the rain is important for groundwater recharge and therefore the wetlands and recent plantings have been appreciative. We have had to say haere rā to our education ranger, Adele, who has moved to another job which she will continue to do great things within. She has been a fantastic member of the team who has held the vital role of instilling a passion for nature, conservation, cultural knowledge, and science into our children through school group planting, surveying, videomaking, and teaching. We, as the rangers, were glad to have spent time working with her.

We are really looking forward to Daffodil Day this year after having to cancel last year’s street appeal due to COVID. It was a huge blow for our organisation and our fundraising endeavours, we were extremely grateful to our communities for continuing to support us through online giving. Keep an eye out for our volunteers in their bright yellow vests and you’ll see the large daffodils made by the Amberley Menz Shed at our sites creating even more presence. • It’s never been easier to fundraise for Daffodil Day! How about a ‘Yellow’ breakfast or morning tea, a quiz night, casual Fridays throughout August, a classic raffle, or an office swear jar for the month of August! Register a fundraiser at daffodilday.org.nz and you’ll be given your own fundraising page. • Paint the Town Yellow – dress up your shop window in yellow for the week of

New tool for tenants who want an easy-to-heat home CEA Charitable Trust in Christchurch has developed a free checklist for tenants looking for a new home that is warm, dry and healthy to live in. The checklist is available as a free booklet or a free online tool.
so tenants know what they are renting, as it can be cheaper to have a rental that is slightly dearer in rent but much drier and easier to heat. Some examples: Many older style downlights (the little lights that sit flush with the ceiling) cannot have insulation over or even around them which means the ceiling insulation has many holes in it, making it less effective. Homes without an option to vent a dryer to the outside can become very damp. And whether a house has good curtains can make a difference to how much heat is lost through windows. The online tool is available from CEA’s website at cea.co.nz/rental/cea-track-rental-options. The booklet version is available from CEA’s office at 16 Leslie Hills Drive, Riccarton in Christchurch during their office hours or through their online shop (just pay $3 postage and handling) at cea.co.nz/shop Community organisations who would like multiple copies for their clients, please contact the office, we can send them free of charge to you.
Although the Healthy Homes Standards go a long way to make sure rentals are warm and dry for tenants to live in, there is a lot more to keep in mind if tenants want a warm and easy to heat rental. Now the rental market is easing, tenants may have a bit more choice and it would be very useful to have a look at the checklist
The tool has been developed with funding from the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment under the ‘Support for Energy Education in Communities’ Programme. CEA also still offer free insulation for eligible low income homeowners. Visit cea.co.nz or call 0800 GETWARM (0800 438 9276) for more info.

Seven legal firms make a staff member available for this clinic on a rostered basis over the year and we are grateful for their ongoing and longstanding support. At present, this clinic is being conducted by phone. Budgeting Drop-In Clinic: This fortnightly clinic gives CAB clients the opportunity to discuss their budgeting needs and questions with a Financial Mentor from Budgeting Services North Canterbury. Appointments are for 15 minutes. We encourage clients to book, however there is a drop-in option available as well.
Immigration Clinic: This fortnightly clinic is by appointment only and gives CAB clients the opportunity to meet with a licensed immigration advisor who will help, advise and support clients to understand how to navigate the immigration application process. Appointments are for 15 minutes. COMING SOON – Employment Clinic: This is a new clinic which we are developing in collaboration with the Ministry of Social Development. Details are to be confirmed, however we hope this drop-in clinic will be up and running by mid-August. Please check our Facebook and Neighbourly pages for updates or phone us for more information. If you or someone you know needs information, advice or support, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with us. We’re here to help. All our services are free and confidential, and no question is too big or too small. You can find us at 209 High Street, Rangiora, or you can phone us on 03 313 8822 or 0800 367 222, or send us an email northcanterbury@cab.org.nz

Peer Support North Canterbury
Peer Support Comcare’s Peer Support Service supports people, through shared experience, to make sense of what is happening for them and how they want to move forward. Peer Supporters in North Canterbury can meet regularly to provide one to one in person support as a fully mobile service within the Waimakariri and Hurunui districts. Peer Support helps people to understand each other because they’ve ‘been there’, shared similar experiences, and can model for each other a willingness to learn and grow. In Peer Support, people come together with the intention of changing unhelpful patterns and getting out of ’stuck’ places. It can help to build relationships that are respectful, mutually responsible, and potentially transformative, while feeling safe and accepting. Promoting a ‘trauma-informed’ way of relating to ourselves, Peer Support pushes us to move towards. It focuses on what and where we want to be, rather than focussing on what we need to stop doing.
Referrals Peer Support is for anyone aged 18+ who is experiencing mental distress and/or addictions. People can self-refer, be referred by SMHS, their GP or other community services. Visit www.comcare.org.nz/generic-referral to complete a referral. For Peer Support, select “Support to understand how my mental health or addiction impacts me” or “Support to understand my barriers to moving forward” from the What support is required field.
