Greetings

from the Editor Kia ora koutou Omicron has arrived in the Waimakariri. As people, agencies, business and organisations brace themselves for the coming weeks, it’s worth considering how fortunate we are to have a strong and well connected community. This means that we can ensure that those needing to isolate at home can be well supported mentally, emotionally and with the resources they need. It’s hard not to feel for local businesses that may be struggling with higher than usual staff absentees and the effects of some people reluctant to venture out to shop recreationally or dine locally. However, we have done this before and bounced back. Local people have loyally supported local business, going the extra mile to ensure that they could recover. I remember how many of us bought coffee and lunch daily and the restaurants being packed in the months after the lockdowns! I have been reflecting on early 2020, when we were first thrown into the pandemic and how much has been achieved since then. Local service, support and community organisations have been incredibly agile and willing to work together to address issues like food insecurity. Developing a ‘food secure District’, including a community hub to connect, educate and

empower people toward a more positive future. It is incredibly inspiring to see the photos of Lions Club planting and harvesting acres of pumpkins and potatoes to go into food security! Community connectors have been engaged, alongside planning for a ‘Next Steps’ website that will help people to get the information they need to adapt to the challenges and changes that life throws at them. Strong economic development and support via Enterprise North Canterbury and MSD has ensured that we are not seeing the level of business closure experienced by many other communities. ‘Rangiora’ (Clear skies) has been translated as “calm after a storm” or a “place of peace after a time of trouble”. We will recover! Kia Kaha.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of North Canterbury eagerly welcomed Olivia Eustace to the team at the end of 2021. Currently in training to become a Mentoring Coordinator, Olivia joins Ellie Le Gros and Jo Sim in making a positive difference in the lives of rangatahi (young people) through professionally supported, mentoring relationships across the region.

Joining BBBS has been a dream come true for me. Having volunteered at The BIG Breakfast community fundraiser, my new role makes me so excited to officially be part of the team! I am really looking forward to getting to know all our awesome tamariki, their families and mentors and creating new, life-changing matches.

6 Update from Tūhaitara Coastal Park A new year, a new school term! Welcome back to our tamariki! Our regular school groups are starting to return to the park where they actively learn about nature, culture, and ecological stewardship. Connections between culture and nature were the focus of the first visits of the term. A visit to the high Tūtaepatu Lagoon lookout is the perfect place to talk about the significance of the lagoon, and to get an fantastic overview of the park to talk about changes to the landscape over time. The tamariki used their imaginations to visualise the extensive wetlands and water channels that once stretched from Kaiapoi Pā all the way over to the Waimakariri River. Talking about some of the mahinga kai resources the lagoon provides, we passed around raupō leaves and dried harakeke flower stems, which are used for making mōkihi, a vessel used for traversing the Harakeke flower stems wetlands. The air-filled harakeke and raupo leaves stems provide buoyancy, while the raupo outer is watertight. We then looked at a map of the park showing the network of biota nodes, which currently stands at 63! By digging down and creating freshwater groundwater ponds, then planting native tree species we are creating habitats for native wildlife. Biota nodes form a biodiversity skeleton across the park, which is helping to rehabilitate the indigenous coastal

ecosystem. Our biota nodes are adopted and maintained by a school, a community group or a local whānau.

Map showing the biota nodes at Woodend If you, your school or your community group would like to find out more and adopt a biota node please get in touch. Another way to get involved is to take part in our community tree planting events. We are starting planting in April. We will run the events in accordance with Covid-19 response protocols. Adults will need to be vaccinated to take part and able to show their vaccine pass on arrival. If you would like to be added to our tree planting volunteers mailing list please send your name, number, and contact email to tkot.enquiries@farmside.co.nz Find out more about the coastal park and our work: Website: www.tuhaitarapark.org.nz Facebook: Friends of Tūhaitara Coastal Park Instagram: tuhaitara.coastal.park

Got Cravings?

Distract yourself with the ‘4-Ds’

Delay Delay acting on the urge to smoke. Don’t open a pack or light a cigarette. After a few minutes, the urge to smoke will pass.

Drink water Sip water slowly, hold it in your mouth a little while to savour the taste.

Deep breaths Take a long slow breath in — then let it out slowly. Do that 3 times.

Do something else Take your mind off smoking by doing something else instead. Here’s a few ideas to get you started... • Count 10 long, slow breaths. • Do some exercise — walk around the block or do a couple of press-ups. This can help you reduce cravings as well as distracting you. • Watch a funny video on Facebook or YouTube. • Phone a mate. • Have a healthy snack, like a piece of fruit.

Each year, CABS throughout Aotearoa New Zealand celebrate Awareness Week. We will mark it in 2022 from Monday 14 March to Sunday 20 March. This year’s theme is Renters’ Rights.

We also have a broad range of information about tenancy and renting on our website www.cab.org.nz We invite you to get in touch with us if you need help.

Amidst the trials of the COVID-19 pandemic, we have seen ongoing enquiries from renters facing tough and trying times. Tenants and renters have had issues with the poor state of housing, high rents, lack of housing, disputes with landlords, maintaining relationships with flatmates, isolating when sick in times of COVID, and much more.

Please note that all clients visiting our office must present their Vaccine Pass for sighting, wear a mask and sign in on entry. If Omicron appears in our district, we will suspend our face-to-face service and clinics and move to a phone and email service only.

We want to reach out to renters and inform them of their rights and let them know that the Citizens Advice Bureau is always there for them when it comes to valuable confidential information and advice.

You’ll find us at 209 High Street, Rangiora, or you can phone us on 03 313 8822 or 0800 367 222 or send us an email northcanterbury@cab.org.nz

We are also promoting the Aratohu Tenant Advocacy, a comprehensive online resource developed by CABNZ that provides support and guidance to tenants and their advocates.

Our opening hours are 9am to 4.30pm, Monday to Friday.

Funding

Community Organisation Grant Scheme (COGS) Public Meetings In February/March each year the Canterbury Rural COGS Local Distribution Committee holds public meetings as an opportunity to work with communities to determine the COGS Funding priorities for that year. This year due to COVID face-to-face public meetings will not be held. However, it is important to have community input into the priorities for the COGS 22/23 year. For this reason we will be holding zoom meetings for you to attend and/or a survey for you to complete to gather your feedback. Further information about dates and times for the zoom meeting will be sent out closer to the time. If you are interested in receiving information about these meetings or receiving the survey directly: Email: trish.hughes@dia.govt.nz or phone Trish Hughes 027 557 1046

Youth

Waimakariri Youth Council Update The beginning of 2022 has been a busy one for the Waimakariri Youth Council (WYC) as we have recruited 7 new members. We had a number of amazing applications come through and it was a tough decision to narrow these down! The first meeting that the new recruits will attend will be our February meeting and it will be great to start 2022 off with an awesome team of young people. The WYC are looking forward to the Dudley Park Redevelopment Project making some progress, with work beginning on the first stage of our plan later this year. We are also looking to get involved in some more environmental work throughout the year. We can’t wait to see what 2022 has in store! We thought we might give you a quick introduction to the members of your WYC for 2022. Here are the names of all your Youth Council members and also the reason why they joined the Youth Council: I decided to join the Waimakariri Youth Council because… Lexie Mealings - “I have grown up in the Waimakariri District and feel a close connection to the district. I also wanted to bring my skills acquired from my tertiary study to the WYC.” Lucy Malone - “I wanted to make changes to the Waimakariri District to make it a more welcoming and caring place where everyone can find opportunities to bring out the best in themselves. I also thought that the WYC would be a great place to meet new people.” Monte Gooch - “I believe the youth viewpoint is critical for the Waimakariri District Council. I wanted to contribute to shaping our community and learn more about how local government works.” Oliver Kelly - “I love public speaking and acting as a voice for those who may not wish to speak up for themselves. I felt that the WYC would provide me with the opportunity to expand on my experiences.” Oscar Bai - “I wanted to see what I could do for the community.” Thalia Rae - “I love to be a part of the community and feel like I’m doing something. I love volunteering and working with people. I’ve loved being on WaiYouth and wanted to take a step up.” Zack Lappin – “I wanted to join the WYC as I wanted to create positive change for local people and youth within the region, and others like myself who have a disability. I want to go into politics when I am older, and I felt that the WYC would be a stepping stone towards that long term goal.” We look forward to updating you later in the year!
