The annual Nantucket Comedy Festival, which brings top comedic talent to Nantucket Island opens this Thursday, July 13 at 7 pm with Ladies of Laughter, featuring nationally headlining female comedians, including Maureen Langan, Christine Hurley, Erin Jackson, Erin Maguire. This event is for ladies and gentlemen, so make it a date night or bring your friends. Don’t miss this rousing night of comedy with these very funny women.

As a major fundraiser for Stand Up & Learn—a year-round comedy education program for kids that teaches them life lessons through comedy—children are always a part of the festival. This year, SUL Kids who have been working throughout the year to “find their funny,” will perform on the White Heron Theatre stage Friday, July 14 at 5 pm in a free show for all ages. Later that evening, at 7 pm in The Dreamland, the Friday Night Comedy All-Stars will leave adults laughing. This year this event features some of the top favorite comedians from past festivals: Steven Wright, Adam Ferrara, Jack Gallagher, Jimmy Dunn, Ken Rogerson, and Simon Fraser.

Comedians from Boston and New York face off in the final “smackdown” event of the 2023 Nantucket Comedy Festival this Saturday, July 15 at 7 pm. Emmy Award Winner Bob Ley from ESPN will once again officiate and keep the game (relatively) clean as these comics swing for the fences. Beantown comics Corey Rodrigues, Erin Maguire, Graig Murphy, Jared Freid will be up against Big Apple team of Charles McBee, Adam Ferrara, Maureen Langan, Michael Somerville.

Theatre Workshop of Nantucket continues to bring its gleeful production of the mixtape musical Rock of Ages to the Bennett Hall Stage. A touch cheesy and a whole lot of fun, this Broadway hit will have you tapping your feet and joining in on your favorite tunes.

Rock of Ages takes audiences back to a time of 80s rock anthems by bands including Night Ranger, REO Speedwagon, Pat Benatar, Twisted Sister, and more. Always Be Prepared

Be prepared! Ah, yes, the old Boy Scout motto. No better time to be prepared than when you’re out on some remote beach, far from what passes for civilization on this little island of ours. It’s important to remember the 6 P’s: Proper Prior Planning Prevents Poor Performance! Here’s a couple entries from my fishing log that illustrates the importance of preparedness.

“Headed out at 11:00 pm. A guy was stuck in the sand near the Eel Point access. Popped him out with my tow strap. Finally got fishing. Black Sluggo only. Caught my standard issue 24-inch striper on about my seventh cast, just west of the fence. No one else there. Fished another hour, not even a hit.” Not the best night of fishing, but that’s not what this is about.

The Eel Point beach access has a narrow little passage filled with real soft sand. It’s like a bear trap for low clearance vehicles. This man had a Subaru wagon of some sort, equipped with 4-wheel drive. He told me that it generally scoots out to his fishing spot and back with no problem. This night, however, the lowrider SUV got bottomed out in the soft sand, and its wheels just spun. The man said he’d been stuck there for about an hour. Not to worry, my friend – Boy Scout Stevie is here to help! I opened up my black toolbox that lives in the back of my truck. The box contains, amongst other things, a heavy-duty nylon strap with steel hooks and buckles. It was exactly the right tool for the job. We fastened the strap on to each vehicle. I backed my truck up, the strap stretched taut and the Subaru popped right out.

So let’s roll back the tape and review this event: Getting stuck on the beach or finding someone stuck on the beach is not a particularly unusual event on Nantucket. You need to plan for these fateful occasions. My dumb self has been stuck plenty over the years, so I’ve developed some expertise the hard way. Hardly ever was I prepared to assist in my own rescue during those past events. Grey hair does have some benefits, of course. My toolbox now contains the nylon strap and hooks as well as long, heavy duty jumper cables (don’t cheap out here – get the good ones), a complete first aid kit, a little shovel/entrenching tool, a fire extinguisher, a small but sturdy plywood board, and a mini air compressor that can plug into ports inside my truck for power. Also, I’ve added some heavy duty plastic treads to stick under a stuck tire, and they’re lifesavers!

Did I earn my Boy Scout merit badge for this? Um, let’s talk about my short but memorable career as a Boy Scout… When I was maybe 11 years old, the Nantucket Boy Scouts were holding a campout at their really neat camp site, Camp Richard. This camp is in Nantucket’s State Forest, located in the central portion of the island. I recall that I was paired up with my buddy Mikey Ramos for this campout, the very same Mikey whose plumbing truck I ride around in when not fishing. Lifelong friends! We pitched our little Boy Scout tents on Friday night and did our campout stuff that night, telling ghost stories around a campfire and such.

Saturday morning was beautiful, filled with the promise of a fun day of scouting adventures and whatever else was scheduled, hopefully to include breakfast. The splendor of the morning was rudely interrupted by a highly agitated scoutmaster. It seems that a couple of the older kids had kept him awake during the night and now it was payback time. The scoutmaster told us to pack all of our gear up and prepare for a five-mile hike.

Striking Distance

We have had a wonderful July. On a day that a billionaire would have designed for his pleasure, I walked up Pleasant Street and headed to town. This summer, these hydrangea have bloomed, as have the hedges. Somebody loved them. Somebody pruned them by hand, fertilized the dirt with the right acidic mix to get bridal white blooms, and gave them lots of water.

This close to town, the property values have entered into the Platinum Circle, so most of the yards aren’t waiting for Chad to get off the Rhodes 19 at the yacht club and get on the Toro in the backyard. Instead, squads of white-shirted workers descend on the “property” and prepare it for the weekend. In one brick driveway, four women bent over and pulled slight shoots of grass and weeds from between the bricks. Two hours later, the bricks were weed-free and ready for the gleaming summer rides—one a Mini Cooper, the other a silver Yukon.

At one point in the recent past, Nantucket was where millionaires mowed the lawns of billionaires. I remember seeing those millionaires bouncing their lawnmowers in the back of Ford Explorers, with the handles pushed out a precarious back window. That time has mostly passed. The billionaires found a cheaper way to get the lawns they want for the summer: they let their accountants find a contractor who will hire sub-contractors who will find people to “grind the gig work” and pluck the grass out of the brick driveways for cash. The mowing millionaires have moved to Florida, North Carolina, or Mashpee. The billionaires remain and they expect quality service.

Since Ronald Reagan, the economy has been splitting between the “have-aYukons” and “the have-a-bikes.” Since 1978, the average wage of a CEO has increased 1480% while the average worker has seen their wages hold steady or fall. As the CEO wages have risen and the workers wages have slipped, unions have faded from America and from Nantucket. Today, less then 10% of all workers are unionized while, at the same time, the top 1% owns 35% of the net worth of the country. And guess where that 1% comes for lobster salad and blueberry lemonade?

So, for most of the well-heeled visitors on Main Street, the only unionized

Leaves of Three, Let it Be

There is a children’s book of poetry called Love Poems for the Unloved by Diane Lang which highlights species in nature that are often given a bad rap. Some of the poems focus on spiders or snakes, others bats and vultures. In the spirit of appreciating something in nature that is often much maligned and which, quite honestly, I personally suffer from, let’s focus today on poison ivy.

Poison ivy (Toxicodendron radicans) is a woody plant native to Nantucket. Sometimes it looks like a forb, sometimes a vine it can take many forms. It is a in the same family of plants (Anacardiaceae) as mango and cashew. People who are extremely allergic to poison ivy may also be sensitive to those foods. As the name implies, it is “toxic” or “poisonous” to the touch for many individuals. While 85 % of Americans are allergic to poison ivy, they’re actually allergic to urushiol, the rash-causing oil produced by the plant.

Poison ivy is a plant I love to hate or hate to love. I am extremely allergic to the oil myself, but I marvel at its ability to morph into many plant forms. As a woody vine it climbs and girdles trees as can be seen along the edge of the Nantucket State Forest. It can appear herbaceous, growing among the low bush blueberries and wildflowers of summer (take care when you harvest). Each stem seems to know how tall to grow to mimic the surrounding plants. It can be shrubby in nature, growing in and among the bayberries and huckleberries growing no more than hip height. Despite being a master of disguise, there are some tell-tale identification clues so that you can avoid contact.

The first step in avoiding a rash is to know how to identify poison ivy. I always make sure to highlight the plant on nature explorations especially with kids. “Leaves of three, let it be,” is an old rhyme that works most of the time. While many native, innocuous plants also have clusters of three leaves, it may be best

What If You See a Seal?

Have you noticed seals lying around on the beach? Do you know what to do if you see one? Are they ok? Should I pour water on him? Shoo him back into the ocean? Get up close and see if he’s breathing? Take a selfie with him because I can? None of the above! The answer is stay back 150 feet and call the Marine Mammal Alliance Nantucket Hotline (833-667-6626). Their trained volunteers will advise you, ask for observations and then send a teammate out to check.

Marine Mammal Alliance Nantucket (MMAN) is a local non profit, permitted by the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration to protect and rescue all marine mammals around Nantucket, Tuckernuck, and Muskeget. The Marine Mammal Protection Act of 1972 makes it illegal for anyone else to approach seals, whales, dolphins, and other marine animals. Before that, seals were killed indiscriminately by people acting under the false premise that they were hampering the fishing industry. People could present a seal snout and earn $5. Populations declined drastically and the natural balance of the ocean ecosystem was compromised. So the MMPA was born, and it has taken all these many years to get populations back to historic levels.

Gray seals, or Halichoerus grypus, which means “hooked nose pig of the sea,” are part of the “true” seal family, and the ones most often seen on Nantucket. All true seals have short flippers and no external ear flaps. Many Gray Seals are seen around Nantucket in winter when they are having their pups, through the spring molt. Males can be as large as 880 lbs and females 550 lb. Moms have one pup on the beach after 11 months gestation and will nurse him for three weeks. Once weaned, the pups lose their cozy white lanugo coat and have to learn to swim and fish on their own. It’s a risky business, and up to 50% don’t survive. Since Nantucket beaches are accessible to vehicles, the MMAN team does their best to protect pups from vehicle traffic using signs and orange cones and making sure they are not abandoned by mom during that crucial nursing time. Too much human interaction will cause mom to not come back.

Once the pups are fattened up on rich mother’s milk, they are on their own and must hone their swimming and hunting skills. These juveniles will get themcontinued on page 24

Guitar Virtuoso in Concert July 18

Eliot Fisk, one of America’s most renowned classical guitarists, takes the stage this week at the Nantucket Musical Arts Society’s second concert of its much-anticipated 2023 summer season. Fisk will perform at 7 pm this Tuesday, July 18th in Saint Paul’s Church, 20 Fair Street, the new venue this summer for the Nantucket Musical Arts Society’s (NMAS) acclaimed summer series, now in its 64th season.

Known worldwide as a charismatic performer famed for his adventurous and virtuosic repertoire, Fisk is also celebrated for a willingness to share his musical gifts widely. After nearly 50 years in the public eye, he remains as his mentor Andres Segovia once wrote, “at the top line of our artistic world.”

NMAS will also host the concert series’ popular free “Meet the Artist” event in the Great Hall of the Atheneum, 1 India Street, at 5:30 pm on Monday, July 17 . The informal chat will allow audience members to engage Fisk in conversation about his extraordinary career, plans for the future, musical opinions, and other topics. Students and children especially are welcome.

Fisk has performed with the “Who’s Who” of chamber musicians, including cellist Yehuda Hanani; flutist Paula Robison; clarinetist Richard Stoltzman; violinists Ruggiero Ricci, Gidon Kremer and Joshua Bell; and the Shanghai, Juilliard, Miro, Borromeo and Arditti String Quartets. Many of his creations are crossover projects performed in collaboration with diverse artists, including Paco Peña on flamenco guitar; Joe Pass and Bill Frisell on jazz guitar; chanteuse, Ute Lemper; and Turkish music specialist, Burhan Öçal.

So exceptional is Fisk’s style and approach that the repertoire of classical guitar has been transformed by many of his lively transcriptions, including works by Bach, Scarlatti, Haydn, Mozart, Paganini, Schubert, Mendelssohn, Granados, Albeniz and others. Moreover, numerous new works have been dedicated to Fisk by the world’s most notable composers, including Leonardo Balada, Robert Beaser, Luciano Berio, Ralf Gawlick, Nicholas Maw, George Rochberg, Daniel Bernard Roumain and Kurt Schwertsik.

In addition to maintaining a riveting presence on the live stage, Fisk has remained a prolific recording artist. The last direct pupil of classical guitar master Andres Segovia, Fisk also studied interpretation with the legendary harpsichordist Ralph Kirkpatrick at Yale University, from which he graduated summa cum laude in 1976. Immediately thereafter, Fisk founded the guitar department at the Yale School of Music.

Described by a New York Times’ headline as a “Fiery Missionary to the Unconverted,” Fisk is currently a Professor at the Universität Mozarteum in Salzburg, Austria, where he teaches in five languages, as well as at the New England Conservatory in Boston.

I’ve always been pretty good at math. I understood completely that we could hike for five miles with this scoutmaster who was reliving some sort of unpleasant boot camp experience, or I could hike for a mile and a half and be home. I’ve never been big on taking punishment for someone else’s actions, so I decided that my hike would be in a southwestern direction. This was a precursor to a song that I would write one day: If I Ain’t Digging It, I Ain’t Doing It

I talked it over with Mikey. The vote came back 2 to 0 to say screw the fivemile death march. Off we went, out of the State Forest, across Fairgrounds Road, down Newtown Road to the Hooper Farm Road area where we both lived. I bid adieu to my intrepid fellow escapee Mikey. I walked into my house, grabbed some cereal and commenced to relax on the couch while watching Saturday morning cartoons.

Several hours later, all hell broke loose. My dad walked in, looked at me and said something along the lines of “What the bleep are you doing here?” His face had a strange mix of relief and anger that indicated I was going to receive some combination of a hug and a butt whupping. Next thing I know, cops and firemen were in my front yard, both relieved and curious as to how the morning’s events had come to be. It seems that the scoutmaster had only been blustering about the five-mile trek. Hey, I’m 11 years old, right: how was I to know? One of the cops said, “You dumb kid—the whole town is looking for you. We’ve got a plane circling over the forest!” I did the only thing I could think to do to perhaps minimize the trouble I was in—I started bawling. My poor father just shook his head sadly for the first time of many, many more such opportunities I would provide him with.

Enough of this childhood trauma talk—let’s get back to preparedness. I keep a couple of items in my truck that are pretty solid additions for fishermen and not a bad idea for everyone. The driver’s door pocket of my truck contains a tourniquet. This device, purchased for less than $15 on Amazon, could be the difference between life and death. Cops and other first responders are routinely carrying these now. They’re lightweight, simple to use, and when you need one

workers they have ever met pulled them over on the Polpis Road. Nantucket has never been a hot bed of worker’s rights. It was never Cripple Creek, Lowell, or Matewan. The last thing Starbuck, Coffin, and Macy would have wanted was an International Brotherhood of Whalers. In 1840, a picket line across Straight Wharf would have put everyone off their breakfasts. The mansions on Main Street, just like the ones on Monomoy, Brant Point, and Sconset, were only built by workers. They never lived there.

When Donick Cary and the other WGA writers walk their picket signs down Main Street, the seas part and wonder rides the waves. Most are confused and back away. For some of our vistors, the strikers might as well have borrowed the “big two wheeler” from Young’s and come pedaling out of the Gilded Age with top hats and bustles. For other visitors, the strikers may well have emerged from the Fox News Screen Crawl, complete with horns and inverted crucifixes. For the rest on the sidewalk, the brief picket walk through the waiting-fora-table-crowd should remind them of the power of organized labor. If writers can strike, so can baristas, cooks, waiters, and landscapers. Teachers, cops, and firemen aren’t far behind.

The concerns of the WGA strike feels fairly far off with a $5 drip coffee in one hand and a $7 Nutella Cruffin in the other. I have fifteen shows I mean to watch, and haven’t. Moreover, the audience for movies, shows, and everything else has slipped. We get distracted by shiny things with sparkles and by squirrels.

But the concerns the writers have are concerns that are relevant to anyone who gets a paycheck instead of a dividend. We often see our jobs as something we accept, not as something we chose. We accept the limitations, the assumptions,

and the pain that those jobs demand because we don’t see ourselves as artisans joining a project, but as laborers selected for today’s work and grateful for a ride to the jobsite. We fear the power we hold. It’s easier to pretend we don’t.

Conversely, corporate America has seen the future and it drives an Uber. The future doesn’t have a contract, insurance, or a nameplate on the door. It has a carefully tailored opportunity that will pay off sometime tomorrow, if you meet all your “opportunity goals” and get 200 five-star ratings. With AI bursting on all of our screens, “opportunity goals” await all of the other visitors on Main Street. The vice presidents, middle managers, and marketers all need to be looking down the same steep road the writers are walking with their signs. If Law and Order can be written on ChatGPT, so can the Black Rock quarterly reports.

History flatters us with lies. When we walk up Orange Street or Main Street and we let the centuries slip away, we don’t see ourselves as the upstairs maid or a barrel-maker in Hadwen’s factory. No, we see ourselves as Starbuck, Barney, Coffin, and Roche, with boats in the harbor and oil in the warehouse. Those silks are meant for us. As Americans, we tend to see ourselves as “temporarily embarrassed millionaires” instead of proud craftsmen and artisans. We blind ourselves with wishes and lies: the self-deceptions run out just after the paychecks do.

If we were to see ourselves clearly, we would see that we are more like the women pulling weeds from the brick driveway than like the Masters of Industry and their Blessed Children. We are called to our own work, and that work doesn’t pay enough to afford the initiation fee at Nantucket Golf Club. And that’s fine. If one is called to be a weed-puller, let him pull weeds as Michelangelo painted and as Beethoven composed music. But let him have a fair contract—for his labor, for his family, and for his future.

You might have to strike to get that.

to save someone else (or perhaps yourself) there’s really no substitute. Get one. Or a couple. Put them where you can get them in a hurry if needed. Crazy things happen and a person with an arterial bleed needs help real fast. Quick clotting hemostatic gauze is another important item to have. When things go bad and help is a half-hour away, you better have some tools in the toolbox.

I keep some heavy-duty pliers and wire cutters handy. These live in the driver’s side rear door pocket of my truck. Notice that I keep this stuff in very specific locations? When the bad stuff is flying, you want to be able to be certain and efficient. I have recently added a new item to this collection: a set of eightinch bolt cutters. Why might I need these three items, you ask? Well, let’s return to the fishing log...

“At Driftwood with Benny. Tied in little Tsunami teasers. Benny was on fire! He had a 10-fish lead on me at one point. He finished with 20 fish and even caught a double! All small fish early on. The bite cooled off. Ben went with a black Sluggo. I did as well and caught a 26½-inch fish. The fish flopped while I measured it, and I got the rear Sluggo hook buried in my finger deep. To the emergency room I went.”

In 50 years of fishing, I had never previously had to go to the hospital to get a fish hook removed prior to that night. This is not because I hadn’t stuck myself but good a couple of times over the years. It was because I didn’t want to hear Dr. Lepore (my brotherin-law) bring it up at every family dinner until the end

of time. This hook was up against the bone of my finger. I couldn’t turn the hook and push it out through the skin so that I could cut the barb off with my nifty tools. I had no choice. I must say that young Benny was great. He laughed, he took a couple of pictures for posterity and then drove me to the hospital. Thanks, Benny!

I’m here to tell you, a guy doesn’t feel like Albert Einstein when he walks into the emergency room with a fishing lure affixed to his hand. Imagine my chagrin when the emergency room doctor used the very same tools that I keep in my door pocket to ultimately remove the Sluggo! In fairness to me, he also shot about a pint of lidocaine into my finger.

So, in conclusion: 1.) I was never much of a Boy Scout; 2.) I’ve always had a problem with authority figures; 3.) Keep essential items where you know they will be in case you need them or need to tell someone else where to find them, and; 4.) Don’t be a dummy: remove the hook from the fish before measuring the fish.

Co-chairs Karen Butler and Jackie Kupper both describe this unique art of the Nantucket Lightship Basket by saying, “No two are exactly alike, each reflects the creativity and ingenuity of the person who made it.” They encourage everyone to bring their own unique Nantucket lightship basket to the 2023 Baskets & Bubbly celebration and to join the informal basket parade around the museum. “Lightship baskets as a genre have a wonderful history and even more marvelous is the fact that every individual basket has a history of its own as well, which any lightship basket lover is quick to enthusiastically share. Often describing how each embellishment occurred has a profound significance for its owner. These are baskets of which legends are made; at least to those who adorn them,” they added.

The Baskets & Bubbly fundraising online auction continues through July 17. The online auction provides bidders with the exclusive opportunity to bid on more than 60 baskets and basket-related products. The items include gorgeous Nantucket lightship baskets, some with carving and some with rare wood bases, a print by island artist Maggie Meredith and other artwork, lightship basket cuff and other jewelry, a frame woven by Ritch Leone, and some “priceless” island experiences. The Baskets & Bubbly Raise a Stave portion will give guests an opportunity to pledge monetary donations specifically benefitting efforts to teach adults and children this iconic craft; to enrich museum exhibits and enhance the basket collection; and to research and produce a coffee table style book about the history of lightship baskets including modern, creative innovations.

The Nantucket lightship basket has a long history on the island. During the early 1800s, they were robust and practical for storage and used as carrying baskets. They were in wide use in the island’s stores, workshops, and homes. As the island transitioned from a whaling economy to a tourist economy in the 1860s, the work baskets became a popular keepsake of an island visit.

Prior to 2021, the Nantucket Lightship Basket Museum was the central place for viewing this island craft and for learning how to weave. In 2021, an affiliation was made between the Nantucket Lightship Basket Museum (NLBM) and the

Nantucket Historical Association (NHA), and from this came a superb display of Nantucket lightship baskets and their history on the second floor of the NHA’s Hadwen House on upper Main Street. According to Karen Butler and Jackie Kupper, this affiliation has been very beneficial: “our increased outreach into the culture is significant, the end result is tripling the number of visitors to the museum of tourists, summer visitors, and year round residents. The extensive use of social media and all media done jointly with the NHA in a very professional way is beyond the resources we had as a stand alone museum. Collectively it has been amazingly effective.”

The NHA is committed to preserving the Nantucket lightship basket craft by enhancing the permanent lightship basket collection, displaying exhibitions, and teaching children and adults the art form. Baskets & Bubbly supports the Nantucket Lightship Basket Fund at the NHA, which is used solely to carry out its mission and share the history of Nantucket lightship baskets. Niles Parker, the Gosnell Executive Director, says, “We look forward to this summer fundraiser that celebrates the unique history of Nantucket lightship baskets and directly supports the NHA’s efforts to continue to teach, exhibit, and collect this important island craft.”

The 2023 Nantucket Lightship Basket exhibit in the Hadwen House at 96 Main Street traces the development of Nantucket Lightship Baskets from their 19thcentury origins to the diverse traditional and experimental forms created by the island’s weavers today. The exhibit holds a special case displaying the many basket purse designs invented by José Reyes, a maker who moved to the island after WWII and revolutionized the form and meaning of Nantucket baskets by experimenting with different shapes, lids, and the addition of ornamental carvings, which soon developed into the “Friendship basket” purse prized by collectors today. Visitors of all ages to the exhibit can even try their hands at weaving a lightship basket.

NLBM is an affiliate of the NHA and retains all funds donated, which can be used to carry out its mission. The NHA and the NLBM have worked together to emphasize teaching the craft and sharing the history of making Nantucket Lightship Baskets. The NHA’s mission is to preserve the history of Nantucket through its programs, collections, and properties.

to avoid all “leaves of three” if you’re not sure. Unlike some plants in the blackberry family with three leaves, poison ivy does not have thorns and generally has smooth leaf edges, though sometimes it is “variable toothed.” That basically means it does what it wants when it wants—ugh! Its leaves are generally shiny, though not always: especially when along one of Nantucket’s many dirt roads.

Despite my severe allergy, there is much to admire about poison ivy. First of all, the berries produced by the plant are a great food source for birds: both migratory and resident populations. The urushiol oil only affects humans, so birds, deer, and other wildlife aren’t affected the way we are. Right now, during July, the berries are fully visible. They are small and white, about the size of a bayberry. Another thing to like about poison ivy? It may soon rise as our overlord. Just kidding, but it does have amazing abilities to thrive with climate change. Warming temperatures and elevated carbon dioxide levels are shown to be beneficial for poison ivy, making it grow faster, bigger, and more potent. Researchers from Duke University conducted a six-year study looking at the effects of elevated carbon dioxide levels on forest plots. They exposed the plots to CO2 levels expected at the end of the 21st century (570ppm). As a result of high greenhouse gas levels, poison ivy increased its biomass by 67 percent more than poison ivy that did not have elevated carbon dioxide levels. It increased in photosynthesis, water use efficiency, growth, and population biomass. In addition to growing faster, poison ivy in the study also produced more urushiol oil. Oh joy! In the future, there will be more poison ivy, the plants will be bigger plants, and the urushiol oil will be more. At least the birds will be happy.

Just when you thought it couldn’t get any better, recent work on updating the Nantucket Flora led by Kelly Omand of the Nantucket Conservation Foundation, has found that we actually have a second species of poison ivy on island (lucky us!). Toxicodendron rydbergii, also known as western poison-ivy, is distinguished from the “eastern” version as being more prevalent in wet areas including salt marshes. It also grows as a small shrub and does not exhibit a viny form. The western version does not have the hairy looking aerial roots you can see on vines of the other species. Where I have seen it, it almost looks like a small tree rather

than its shorter cousin.

Despite its name, western poison-ivy is native to Nantucket. It may be a new species in the flora, but that has more to do with proper identification and taxonomy than anything else. If you think you see it, add the observation to iNaturalist and help us document more occurrences of the species.

I didn’t want to leave us all just hating on this important native species. All kidding aside, it’s not just birds and deer that benefit from this plant. I don’t usually subscribe to the edict that a plant must have human value to be important. But sometimes with a plant like poison ivy, I have to remind myself of the benefits.

Poison ivy can have immeasurable value to shoreline areas due to its salt tolerance and ability to grow in impoverished soils. It can be used as a conservation tool to keep people out of many areas and is an effective barrier and thicket in many coastal locales. Poison ivy plays an important role in protecting the local sand dunes, which are inhospitable to many plants. Few plants can tolerate the desert-like conditions. Along with beach grass, bayberry, and other dune-loving species, poison ivy’s sand stabilizing properties make it essential to protecting our dunes—an important aspect of coastal resiliency.

Lastly, come fall, poison ivy leaves turn a brilliant crimson color. Driving down the Milestone Road, it brings some bright colors to the evergreen pines of our state forest. At least we have that to look forward to.

What If You See a Seal?

selves into trouble encountering all imaginable types of dangerous situations. Nature takes her course and balances populations with predators, parasites, and illness, but the MMAN team tries to mitigate the effects of human behavior. We can send an animal with propellor wounds to rehab at the National Marine Life Center, but mostly the team spends the spring months capturing young seals caught in rope, gill net, twine, ring frisbees, and other marine debris. It’s a daily struggle to keep up with all the victims and try to help. Disentangling entails dropping everything when the call comes in to get to the animal before he is frightened into the water. Once swimming again, we have no chance.

With nets, animal handling gloves and a variety of cutting tools, volunteers capture and restrain the animal, and another volunteer or two will approach to remove the offending debris. Without these efforts by stranding teams up and down the Eastern Seaboard, entangled animals drown or are slowly strangled, often with gill netting cutting deeper and deeper into their flesh as they grow. NOAA is working with the fishing industry to try to mitigate these occurrences with all marine mammals and especially the endangered North Atlantic Right Whale. With fewer than 340 left on the planet and barely over 100 breeding females, the threat of entanglement and ship strikes is devastating.

So back to our list of “Don’ts” above: Why should I not throw water on a seal on the beach? A. These animals haul out onto the beach to rest, digest and regulate their body temperatures. Your well-meaning gesture would put an end to all of that. Plus, it’s against the law to get that close. Your presence should not change his behavior or scare him back into the water. A seal may spend several days hauled out.

To gauge the proper distance of 150 feet, think three school bus lengths. Hold up your thumb—if you can still see the seal behind your thumb you’re too close!

How do I know if he’s ok? Call MMAN at 833-667-6626 and we’ll talk about it. First the team will ask if you see any sort of entanglement. If you do, they will ask for your help to keep people and dogs away so it doesn’t flush to the water while rescue is mobilized. Even if you see no entanglement, the team will ask you to politely ask people to stay back and leash their pups. MMAN will then as

if the seal is on his stomach or his side, if he’s lifting his head and tail, and if his eyes crusty or is there a nasal discharge or any wounds. Finally, the team will ask for the Beach Access number where the seal is located. It’s also helpful if you send a photo and a pin drop. All this info helps MMAN determine what level of response is required.

If you find a dead marine mammal, call MMAN. They collect data on all deceased animals and submit it to NOAA to be entered into a national database. The team will also mark it and tag it. If it’s freshly deceased, MMAN team veterinarian will collect it for necropsy) to try to determine cause of death.

If you spot a whale or dolphin on the beach, immediately call MMAN. Cetaceans should never be out of the water. The team will try to respect a dying animal and provide as much peace as possible, but if the animal is healthy and has stranded, she needs to get back into the water ASAP.

A couple of years ago, two dolphins stranded in Hither Creek in Madaket and needed assistance finding their way out. It took many hours of effort, a boat, kayaks, dry suits, and colleagues from the International Fund for Animal Welfare to get the job done. Later, Ping was satellite tagged and tracked for many weeks out and about in known dolphin feeding grounds. It was very satisfying rescue.

Fozzie was a tiny baby gray seal who presumably had washed out in a winter storm and came back into the Boat Basin on the tide. With no place to come out of the water, he was exhausted and freezing cold. A local fisherman and some friends saw the tiny pup trapped in the ice, struggling to stay afloat with just his little snout above water. They called MMAN and helped retrieve the youngster by floating out on a boat and netting him. Team leader and Stranding Coordinator Kim Schulam contacted National Marine Life Center in Buzzard’s Bay, who took him in. He was hypothermic, underweight, and had an eye injury, plus several other issues. The animal care experts at NMLC nursed him back to health and he was released several months later.

These are only two of the hundreds of success stories Marine Mammal Alliance has had. This small but mighty team of volunteers go out in all kinds of weather as a labor of love for critters in need. 40th Pole: Great for families and young children, but no lifeguards. On Nantucket Sound; warm water during July, August and September inspired nickname “The Bathtub” for area nearby. Parking. Best access via 4WD vehicle.

Dionis: 3 miles from town by bike on the north side of Eel Point Rd off Madaket Road. Look for the boulder marked “Dionis.” Sheltered by dunes, calm waters for swimming, safe for children; restrooms, & parking. Beachgoers can take NRTA shuttle bus to Eel Point Rd stop & walk.

Steps: Between Dionis and Jetties beaches; access from Cliff Road. No lifeguard, no facilities, very little parking. Gentle surf; sandbar. Many steep steps must be descended to get to the beach.

Jetties: Easy bike ride from town, or take the shuttle bus. Great beach for families. Lifeguards, changing rooms, playground, volleyball nets, restrooms, showers, public phones, restaurant and take-out food service. Concession and restrooms handicap accessible; boardwalk to the beach. Tennis. Windsurfing, sailboat, and kayak rentals. Shuttle service from town to Jetties Beach is available seasonally.

Brant Point: Easy walk or bike ride from town. No lifeguard. Strong current; experienced swimmers; beach drops off suddenly under the water. Scenic beach with Brant Point Lighthouse; nice to sit and watch the boats rounding the point. Here is where to go to wave goodbye to friends and family departing on the Steamship.

Children’s: Harbor Beach, an easy walk from town down So. Beach Street and off Harbor View Way. Flotation devices are not permitted within the guarded area. Ideal for small children; park, playground, and bandstand; lifeguard, restrooms, showers, food service, picnic tables. Food, playground, and rest room are all accessible. Activities sponsored by Park & Recreation Commission are often held at this beach during the summer.

Francis Street: Five-minute walk from Main Street. Calm harbor waters for swimming; no lifeguard. Jungle gym, kayak rentals, bathroom.

SOUTH SHORE - OCEAN BEACHES

Cisco Beach: Four-mile bike ride to end of Hummock Pond Road. Heavy surf; lifeguard. No facilities. Parking. Rip currents can be strong.

Ladies Beach: To access, turn left at the end of Bartlett Farm Road. No facilities; no lifeguard. Limited parking. Rip current can be strong; heavy surf.

Miacomet Beach: at the end of Miacomet Road. Some parking. Surf and rip currents can be strong on the ocean side. No facilities or food service. This beach is near Miacomet Pond, but the pond is currently closed due to harmful algae.

South Shore Beach: at the end of South Shore Rd. Limited parking; difficult to access beach, 4WD is advisable. No lifeguard; no facilities.

Surfside: Located at the end of Surfside Road, a three-mile ride on paved bike path or take the shuttles. Easy to park. Plenty of surf, wide beach is good for picnics, beach games, and surfcasting. Kite flying west of Surfside Beach is acceptable; for safety reasons, please do not fly kites east of Surfside toward the airport. Due to the number of people who frequent Surfside Beach during the day, it is inadvisable to fly kites during the peak beachgoing hours. Lifeguard, restrooms, showers, public phones, food service. Shuttle service from town to Surfside Beach is available seasonally.

Fisherman’s Beach: Located between Surfside Beach and Nobadeer. No parking; Beach access via steep wooden steps. Plenty of surf, wide beach is good for picnics, beach games, and surfcasting. No lifeguard; no facilities.

Nobadeer: Located near the airport. Limited parking; difficult to access beach. Plenty of surf, wide beach is good for picnics, beach games, and surfcasting. No lifeguard; no facilities.

Madequecham: Land Bank property at the end of Madequecham Valley Road; rough sand road. Parking. No facilities; no lifeguards. Rip current can be strong; heavy surf.

Tom Nevers (“Pebble Beach“): Surf can be heavy; very coarse sand. No lifeguard; no facilities. Good for fishing. Strong rip currents; heavy surf. Access to the beach can be difficult.

WESTERN SHORE - OCEAN BEACHES

Madaket: As far west as you can go, six-mile bike ride on scenic, paved bike path, or take the shuttle bus. Heavy surf, lifeguard, restrooms. Famous for its incredible sunsets.

EASTERN SHORE - OCEAN BEACHES

Siasconset: Regular shuttle bus service or seven-mile ride on paved bike path. Surf can be heavy; lifeguard. Food available in nearby village of ’Sconset. Low Beach: 4WD access. Surf can be heavy; no lifeguard.

BAY & POND BEACHES

Miacomet Pond: This fresh water pond is currently closed due to harmful algae. Pocomo Beach: Great for kayaking and to learn to windsurf. Just west of the Head of the Harbor. Good for children. No lifeguards, no facilities.

Coskata-Coatue and Great Point: at the end of Wauwinet Road, past The Wauwinet Inn. The largest red cedar savanna and woodland in New England. Gray and harbor seals. Public restrooms available at the lighthouse Memorial Day-Columbus Day. Sections of the refuge are sometimes closed to protect nesting shorebirds. Dogs permitted only from Sept. 16 thru March 31 and must be leashed at all times. BEACH SAFETY

•Learn to swim. If you can’t swim an overhead stroke for at least 15 minutes you should not be in the ocean. •Never swim alone. Always swim with a buddy, and swim near a lifeguard whenever possible. •Stay out of the “surf zone” where the waves break at the shoreline. Waves are at their greatest force here, and even a small wave can lift you up and throw you headfirst into the sand. •Never run from the beach into the water and dive headfirst into the waves. Sandbars that cannot be seen from the surface may be present and/or the water may be too shallow.

•Don’t jump or dive into the water from a pier or rock jetty. From a pier or jetty, water appears much deeper than it really is. What looks like 10 or 20 feet of water may only be 2 to 3 feet deep. Diving in could be fatal. The same applies for jumping headfirst into the ocean or a wave from a surfboard – don’t do it! It’s not a risk worth taking. •If you are body surfing or boogie boarding, always keep your arms out in front of you to protect your head and neck. •A rip current will pull you away from the shore, but it will not pull you under. If you’re caught in a rip current, do not swim toward the shore! Instead, swim parallel to the shore, until you’re out of the rip current. Then, swim in to shore. •Never drink alcohol or use drugs at the beach. It clouds your ability to make wise decisions, and that could be fatal! •Take direction from lifeguards at all times.

The greater coastscape, which includes the federally owned Great Point Lighthouse and Nantucket Conservation Foundation land, is a double-fingered peninsula jutting northward between the Atlantic Ocean and Nantucket Sounds is so much more: a blend of sandy beach, rolling dunes, and forest uplands both rugged and serene. The refuge provides multiple habitats for an array of coastal plant and animal species, including heather and beach plum, a maritime oak forest & savannah of red cedar – the largest of its kind in New England – which offer shelter to deer. At the beachfront, watch for horseshoe crabs advancing in extremely slow motion, seals basking in the sun, and shorebirds skittering above the surf line. He takes four 2-1/2-hour trips a day: 7 am, 10 am, 1 pm and 4 pm, and the fishing starts just 15 minutes from the dock.
