Some of the welfare cases we see are down to lack of knowledge when someone has stepped up to try and help a friend or loved one who can’t be there for their horse.

Did you know that you can safeguard your horse’s future by stating in your Will that you want your horse to come to World Horse Welfare. By planning ahead in this way they are promised a lifetime of exper tise, compassion and care.

The paw-fect hoof holiday, on the

Going on holiday represents a time to relax, rejuvenate, and explore new experiences; many of us eagerly anticipate our annual vacation for months on end. The UK has a lot to offer, from 31k of stunning coastlines, to 278k hectares of glorious wood pastures and parkland.

However, for pet owners, the thought of leaving their beloved companions behind can be disheartening. Fortunately, an increasing number of people are recognising the benefits of including their canines or equines – and even both, with enough support and assistance! - in their vacation plans. Pleasingly, there’s a wellestablished niche of the tourism industry that supports travelling with animals, especially dogs, in Great Britain; and in this article, we will highlight the unique opportunities that arise from these pawfect, extended family adventures.

WHY BRING YOUR FURRY FRIENDS ON HOLIDAY?

Most of us who own horses and dogs (and the two often go hand in handwhat’s another set of muddy paws, or a hairy item to sneak into the washing machine?); find that taking the animals on holiday allows for uninterrupted quality

time with them, creating unforgettable memories. It also avoids the need for arranging pet-care, livery fees and kennelling for your animals while you’re away. The UK is packed with fantastic regions to visit, and whether it's exploration of a new, sandy beach, or a peaceful plod through woodland, out pets’ presence can bring comfort and a sense of familiarity and connection when we go away.

CANINE CAPERS

Dogs’ enthusiasm and zest for life add an extra dimension of joy to any outdoor activity – they therefore make excellent companions for exploring nature trails, camping, or enjoying water activities like swimming or paddleboarding. Spending time in nature with a beloved dog also encourages us to be present, as they revel in the simple pleasures of exploring and playing, as many of us humans have seemingly forgotten to do. Dogs are, by their very nature, ‘in the moment’. Taking a dog on holiday can also be an excellent conversation starter, and a way to connect with fellow animal lovers in new locations; so if you are a lone traveller,

Turn an ordinary holiday into an extraordinary one, by taking along your family pets, writes Kathy Carter

holidaying with your dog can offer an organic way to make new connections and socialise.

Because taking dogs on holiday is so popular right now, there are websites devoted to finding you the perfect holiday venue. For example, pawsandstay.co.uk boasts a range of accommodations, from cottages to treehouses, promising: “Your dog will be warmly welcomed, not just tolerated, and you’ll be perfectly positioned to discover somewhere incredible, whether that’s hills and woodlands or white sandy beaches.” We especially love the treehouse on offer at Beneath the Branches in Sussex, a dog-friendly, spacious location on a farm close to the river Arun, close to dog friendly pubs and cafes, and suitable for two adults.

At the website caninecottages.co.uk/ guides, you can search for your perfect holiday based on regional searches, and the ‘Days out with your dog’ page has a wealth of information, allowing you to choose a dog-friendly attraction first, and then book accommodation close by. You can for example head to the Isle of Wight’s Blackgang Chine, reportedly the UK’s oldest amusement park, with your canine in tow, where in the Lands of Imagination, grown-ups, children and dogs can pretend to be cowboys, mermaids, fairies and more.

EQUINE ADVENTURES

Bringing your equine on holiday allows you to keep your horse’s fitness going whilst having a break from your day to day life, and also experience a new location and perspective. Whether you are looking for a training holiday, perhaps to hone skills or learn a new discipline, or want to find a trail riding or farm-based trip that involves daily hacking and exploration of bridlepaths, there’s a trip for you and your horse in the UK.

If you want to find the perfect homestay with your equine, bedding down at a farm is a great option. The website farmstay. co.uk has a large selection of holidays available in the UK where you can take your horse with you. We love the sound of a horsey holiday at Hoe Grange, a traditional, family-run hill farm, set in the stunning Peak District National Park. At this location, the Pennine Bridleway and

THE EVOLUTION OF EQUINE BEDDING- STRAW PELLETS THE NEXT BIG THING

Straw pellets are attracting a growing reputation for combining the best attributes of both straw and wood pellets, with none of their drawbacks. They offer owners an incredibly economical equine bedding option that scores very highly on all the priorities UK horse owners are looking for.

Market leader, Strawmax straw pellets are made in the UK from locally harvested straw. The loose straw is chopped, crushed and dust extracted, and then pelletised at high temperatures that eradicate bacteria and spores to produce a natural high quality, absorbent bedding.

When used properly Strawmax straw pellets give owners everything they want in a bedding and they create a healthy, hygienic bed for their horses with minimal breathable dust and plenty of depth and volume for comfort and support. They are also environmentally friendly, easily compostable they are made from completely natural by-product straw, in a simple, low-energy production process.

Bedmax MD, Tim Smalley whose company has lead the way in the UK bedding market with purpose made shavings for over 20 years, comments: “Our vision at Bedmax has always been to produce bedding that helps owners keep their horses as healthy and happy in their stables as possible, and quality straw pellets do meet the criteria and we believe they will take a substantial and growing share of the market from straw and wood pellets”

24-27TH AUGUST DEFENDER BLAIR CASTLE INTERNATIONAL HORSE TRIALS, SCOTLAND

Set in the grounds of Blair Castle in Highland Perthshire the event runs over historic grounds. This 145,000-acre estate offers rolling farmland to wild open hills and a tour of the Castle will guide you through the history of the estate which dates back to the 13th Century. The hospitality packages are worth a punt as one of Scotland’s most acclaimed chefs, David Barnett, and Pastry Chef, Gerard Chouet are bound to delight you with the three-course lunch served up overlooking the main arena. Along with the International event, run at CCI* to CCI-L 4* level the Scottish Grassroots Championships at BE90 and BE100 level take place at the event. There’s also National Pony Society showing classes, Hunter classes, Pony Club Games and British Show Jumping to watch so you’ll get plenty of equine action. You can enjoy some serious shopping for lifestyle and equestrian wares for sale in the tradestand village with a particular focus in the Heart of the Highlands shopping area to showcase local and small Scottish businesses. While hotels are in the area, there’s also an opportunity to pitch at tent or bring a motorhome/horsebox and really make Blair Atholl your home for the four days of action.

23-24TH SEPTEMBER SOUTH OF ENGLAND INTERNATIONAL, SUSSEX RH17 6TL

One of the longest running horse trials in the country, first established in 1973, South of England is a popular event for riders who compete up to CCI-S 3* level but it was only last year, with it’s combined country fair, that it really took spectators by storm. Approximately 17,500 spectators attended – small fry to the big events – and yet many of the same elite riders are competing and with the attractions suited for all ages – and their canine companions – this year looks set to be more popular still. There are displays including from falconry to gundogs to ‘have-a-go’ activities from pony rides to fly-casting, archery to axe-throwing all aimed at celebrating the joys of the countryside and equestrian pursuits – and, of course, a fun fair complete with candy floss alongside. With the event organised by Pippa Funnell’s mother, Jenny Nolan, it’s sure to have the right balance of traditional and modern, embracing a family feel as is at the heart of our sport.

27TH SEPT- 1ST OCTOBER OSBERTON INTERNATIONAL HORSE TRIALS, NOTTINGHAMSHIRE, S81 0UG

Free to the public, Osberton International is fast becoming a last-hurrah before the close od the eventing season. It’s a target for many riders as the event acts as a championship for four, five, six and seven year-old horses and also offers an International competition for ponies. Here’s your chance to witness riders from as young as 12 on small ponies, competing at International level! And to watch the brightest young horses pit themselves against others of the same age. Unsurprisingly the event is something of a shop window and many horses spotted here are sold on soon after for astronomical sums – each buyer hoping they’ve secured the best talent in the country. There’s a tradestand village too so for those aware that Christmas is coming up, it’s a great opportunity to get a bargain. And, for those feeling weary at the end of the long year of spectating, try hiring an Eco-Voltz electric bike to whizz yourself around the cross-country course!

Magic Millions Festival of British Eventing

The Magic Millions Festival of British Eventing, 4-6 August 2023, marks a very special milestone in 2023 with the marking of its 40th anniversary. Started by HRH The Princess Royal and Captain Mark Phillips in 1983 ‘to give something back’ to the sport they loved, the competition which takes place in the beautiful parkland at Gatcombe House is now one of the most popular events in the equestrian calendar.

Family has always been at the heart of The Festival and that relaxed and informal atmosphere continues to this day with Peter Phillips, now Event Director, and his father Captain Mark Phillips in place as Chairman and Course Designer. In fact, Peter and his sister Zara grew up with the event taking place in the Park Bowl below Gatcombe House every summer. “When we were younger, Zara and I were part of the Menial Task Division (MTD). Made up of the children of organisers and volunteers at the event, menial jobs for the MTD ranged from errand running and roping the course to cutting grass and setting up furniture.

Today the tradition continues with a whole new generation of youngsters helping out including my own children. As I grew up, I got more involved in the organisation of the event, until officially taking the reins as Event Director in 2018,” he remembers. Things have changed enormously since that first event, which was known as the Croft Original Championship back in 1983. Legends like Lucinda Green, Mark Todd and Bruce Davidson have been succeeded by the top global riders including Tim Price, Pippa Funnell and Oliver Townend battling it out for the Magic Millions British Open title, a much sought after trophy. That’s not all though, the first weekend in August now sees competitors of the highest calibre contesting no less than five National Eventing Championship titles. In addition

to The Magic Millions British Open, there is also the Evelyn Partners British Intermediate Championship, the Dodson & Horrell British Novice Championship, the TopSpec Challenge for The Corinthian Cup and the RoR/NTF Retrained Racehorse Event Championship. With so many Championship titles on offer, The Festival is a true showcase for all levels of eventing from amateur to elite.

FIVE CHAMPIONSHIPS

The Magic Millions British Open is one of the most prestigious titles in the sport of eventing attracting the most well-established horses and riders on the world stage. Having completed the dressage and showjumping phases of the event earlier, Sunday afternoon sees competitors run cross country with the top

ten jumping in reverse order, keeping the tension and excitement running right until the last horse comes through the finish line.

The Evelyn Partners British Intermediate Championship and the Dodson & Horrell British Novice Championship attract horses on their way up the ranks with the likes of Badminton winner Tamarillo having won the Intermediate title with William Fox-Pitt at The Festival in the past.

The TopSpec Challenge for The Corinthian Cup launched in 2015 and is a restricted amateur Novice championship. It is a true Novice test and, in keeping with the grassroots nature, riders must not have completed an Intermediate class in the current or preceding five years making sure that the competition is as fair as possible for amateur riders.

The Festival also hosts the RoR/ NTF Retrained Racehorse Event Championship sponsored by the National Trainers Federation which is exclusively open to horses that are finding a new career in eventing after previously racing.

MAIN ARENA ATTRACTIONS

The next best thing about The Festival after the amazing sport out on the parkland is a fantastic opportunity for spectators to see an array of other competitions such as Pony Club Showjumping, Arena Eventing and dog agility - so there is plenty to do. There will also be the ultimate crowd pleaser, the Shetland Pony Grand National. The ponies may only be 40 inches high and the jockeys no more than 13 years old, but the competition is just as fierce as at Aintree! The eventual winner also goes on to qualify for the final at London International in December so you may well be watching a star of the future!

Visitors to the event in August can also enjoy extensive shopping and dining opportunities, with over 100 trade stands ranging from homeware and country clothing to art and jewellery alongside food options offering many local treats, providing something for all of the family.

THE FESTIVAL THROUGH THE YEARS

world – in our opinion - head on down to the Park Bowl. This has got to be close to the most perfect place for a picnic anywhere. Settle down and enjoy the action as a whole host of top international riders and their horses navigate down through the water complex and on to the end of this very exciting cross country course. The Box Office is open, so make sure you book your tickets now at www. festivalofbritisheventing.com

Previous winners of the British Open Championship over the past forty years include names such as Lucinda Green, Mark Todd, Mary King, Pippa Funnell, William Fox-Pitt, Oliver Townend and Jonelle Price among many more big names.

41% of those winners are female and 59% are male which really highlights that equestrianism is the only sport left where men and women compete on a level playing field; and you get to be a part of it.

Since the first competition in 1983, there have been 38 Open Championship winning horses and 23 Open Championship winning riders.

Mary King, William Fox-Pitt and Mark Todd have the most wins with 4 a piece!

LAST YEAR’S WINNERS

Defender Burghley Horse Trials - 31 August-3 September is undoubtedly the autumn highlight of both the British equestrian scene and the rural social calendar.

of Burghley Park to provide the ultimate test of horse and rider - the willingness of the organising team to go to any lengths to put on the best event possible, and its professional yet relaxed vibe.

“Hallelujah!” exclaimed an emotional Piggy after her final showjumping round. “I’ve been through a rollercoaster of emotions today, but the main one I’m feeling now is relief. Vanir Kamira so deserves this –to win at Burghley is so special and I’m delighted that she will have her name on Winners’ Avenue; she absolutely deserves it and this is what dreams are made of.”

The CCI5* event - one of only seven horse trials worldwide at the very highest level of international competition - is a heady mix of top-class horse sport, superb shopping and great entertainment. It is loved by the world’s elite equestrian athletes for its famously challenging and exciting cross-country coursedesigner Derek di Grazia uses the undulating and varied terrain

“I think it’s the best event in the world,” says last year’s Burghley heroine Piggy March, who won the event for the first time in 2022 aboard Vanir Kamira. “I grew up wanting to ride at Burghley, and it is always the event I look forward to the most all year.”

NOT ‘JUST’ A CCI5*

While the main CCI5* competition takes centre stage at Burghley, there are multiple ancillary classes running throughout the four days of the event.

Chief among them, perhaps, are the Dubarry Burghley Young Event Horse Finals for four- and five-year-olds. These are the UK’s most prestigious classes for the future stars of eventing. The 2022 winners were Piggy March (March Cupid, four-year-old champion) and Robyn Gray (Jack Of Clubs, five-year-old champion).

While the Dubarry Burghley Young Event Horse Finals are held in the House Arena on the Friday of the event - 1 September in 2023Thursday is LeMieux Pony Club showjumping day. Forty Pony Club teams compete in two rounds of showjumping - and places on branch teams at Burghley are hotly contested. Many top event riders had their first experience of riding on Burghley’s hallowed turf in the LeMieux Pony Club Team Jumping competition - let’s hope the experience inspires future generations of international riders, too.

On the Sunday of Burghley, there are Racehorse to Riding Horse qualifiers for HOYS in the Main Arena, and BSPS Gold Cup Sports Pony showing classes all day in the House Arena.

Blenheim Palace International Horse Trials

Blenheim Palace International Horse Trials (14-17 September 2023)

New organisers bring back Blenheim – the horse trials you know and love. In the September sunshine, some of the best horse and rider combinations in the world head to Blenheim Palace

International Horse Trials (BPIHT) 14-17 September, to compete against arguably the most impressive backdrop of all British horse trials – Blenheim Palace. Home to the Dukes of Marlborough since 1705, Blenheim Palace was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987. Set in over 2,000 acres of ‘Capability’ Brown landscaped parkland and designed by Vanbrugh in the Baroque style, it houses one of the most important and extensive collections in Europe, which includes portraits, furniture, sculpture and tapestries.

The Palace, currently home to the 12th Duke of Marlborough and his family, was built between 1705 and 1722 and is named after the 1704 Battle of Blenheim. It is the only non-royal country house

in England to be given the title of a Palace and was even the birthplace of one of Britain’s most famous leaders, Sir Winston Churchill. It was his father who described the vista on entering the Estate from the village of Woodstock as the ‘finest view in England’.

Roy Cox, Blenheim Estates Managing Director comments on the 2023 event which “continues over 30 years of this World Heritage Site providing a platform to our gold medal winning athletes, aspiring competitors and amateurs alike. All in front of the many tens of thousands who come to enjoy such a great sport in such a great setting making such special memories.”

EQUESTRIAN ACTION

Blenheim Palace

International Horse Trials has been a highlight of the equestrian

calendar for over three decades. It is one of the only events to run both a CCI4*-S and a CCI4*-L. The long format provides a true test for a three-day-event horse and will be ideal preparation for those combinations looking to compete at the Paris Olympics in 2024. The CCI4*-S at BPIHT is a championship for eight and nine-year-old horses and is a fantastic opportunity to see up and coming equine talent. This class is often a steppingstone for younger riders too, moving up to 5*, so you really do get to see the future of eventing at the horse trials.

Having begun in 1990, previous winners of the top honours at Blenheim include some big names; William Fox-Pitt, Pippa Funnell and Piggy March have all won the 4* (previously 3*) class multiple times.

Prior to 1st January 2019, 4* level was known as 3* and the top level of eventing was 4* rather than 5*. The FEI class codes were updated as part of British Eventing’s rule changes that year to align with other equestrian disciplines such as show jumping.

Out of 45 winners since 1991, William heads up the roll of honour with five wins and both Pippa and Piggy have won it four times each. Not only have these three won the class on numerous occasions, but they are also joined by Lucinda Fredericks, Andrew Nicholson, Kimberly Severson, Jonelle Price and Chris Burton as multiple winners. Although there’s plenty of names on that list, there are twenty other winners who haven’t managed to do it twice, let alone five times, which shows just how competitive BPIHT is, being perhaps the most prestigious 4* horse trials in the eventing calendar.

Top riders are excited about the 2023 event; Laura Collett MBE, Olympic Gold Medal winner at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and winner of the 2022 Badminton Horse Trials said “I am very pleased to hear someone has taken over the trials and excited to know it will be on the calendar again. It was a worrying time with the Jockey Club pulling out that we might lose a very significant event from the calendar hence why I’m pleased to hear it has been taken over. Blenheim is a fantastic event and one that has been a steppingstone for many future 5* winners, particularly from the 8/9yo Champs.”

EVENTING ISN’T THE ONLY ACTION ON THE SCHEDULE

The much-loved Eventer Challenge returns this year on Thursday 14th and Friday 15th September after a break with two classes – 90cm and 100cm. The event is open to Riding Club and Pony Club members who can enter a team. Depending on how many entries there are from teams, there may be the opportunity for individuals to enter. However, knowing how in demand this event has been in previous years and the overwhelmingly positive response when its return was announced, the organisers expect very good numbers when entries open in July.

Expect to see some ex-racehorses looking hot-to-trot in the Retraining of Racehorses (RoR) Southern Regional Dressage Championships taking place on the first two days. The Regional Championship series encompasses Affiliated and Unaffiliated competitions, for all RoR eligible horses. In order to qualify for these championships, riders are required to submit two dressage score sheets at the level required which must meet a minimum percentage, depending on the level.

DELIGHTFUL DISPLAYS

Spectators at the Horse Trials won’t just be treated to equestrian action –there will be a jam-packed schedule of entertainment in the Blenheim Arena. Hawkeye Falconry will be undertaking action packed bird of prey displays, featuring Eagles, Falcons and Owls. The birds are flown to music, so this isn’t your usual bird display. The falconers say their highlight is flying multiple Peregrine falcons together, which is unique and very fast! They will also have a meet and greet area, where after each display, people will be invited over to see the birds up close, take photos and ask any questions they have. The team plan to have around 10 birds at the event, with each bird flying free in the arena. In between the shows, the birds will be having a well-deserved rest and

‘recharge’.

SHOP UNTIL YOU DROP

With over one hundred trade stands alrewady set to attend the Autumn event, spectators won’t be short of options to indulge in for a bit of retail therapy. In between all of the excitement of the eventing action, visitors can enjoy an array of equestrian and rural trade stands. The Stable Events trade stands team comment “Amongst the favourite equestrian stalwarts we like to mix it up with the more boutique brands so we can surprise and delight our visitors with something new alongside the familiar. We continuously review the trade stand applications and therefore can identify any gaps or where we have enough of one particular type of exhibitor. Then we do masses of research and as a team attend many shows as part of our process. We review stands and look to see if there are any brands which we could invite to Blenheim Palace who would fit with our visitor journey and work within the mix of the event. Seeing exhibitors at other events gives us an insight into how they present the stand and interact with customers which is so very important.”

TICKETING AND COSTS

The organisers want to make the event as accessible as possible for everyone. Not only is entry complimentary for under 12’s, this year parking is free with an option to upgrade to forward parking if you would like to pay to park closer to the entrance. Event Mobility will be available for visitors with mobility issues along with the buggy shuttle service to help people with their shopping from the trade-stands to the car park.

Cornbury House Horse Trials

Cornbury House Horse Trials in Oxfordshire (610 September) takes eventing to a new level.

With the stunning backdrops of both Cornbury House and the ancient Wychwood Forest, founder David Howden has spared nothing to make this gem of an event into the most desirable fixture in the sporting - and social - calendars. The 2023 event builds on this in every way. Cornbury promises an unprecedented boutique experience for visitors, where the world of top-class equestrian sport combines with a woodland festival feel.

The eventing action takes centre stage - this year the British Eventing National Young Horse Championships will be held at Cornbury alongside international FEI and national classes, attracting all of the UK’s top

riders. There are also The Howden Way Youth classes for under-21 riders; David Howden’s passion for encouraging young talent means that Cornbury will showcase the most exciting future stars of eventing in equine and human form.

But new for 2023 is a celebration of all things food and drink with the introduction of “Field Food”, offering a showcase of delicious locally-produced artisan options for attendees to enjoy. This will include open Asados (Argentinian barbecue food), a range of offerings from local farms along with local ales to enjoy from the new on-site public bar, the aptly named “Wychwood Inn”, and handpicked artisanal produce.

Immersive woodland kids activities will be on offer over the weekend along with some “apres” style entertainment featuring live music after the competition has finished. This is eventing in style, with high-end hospitality available, and the very best possible conditions for horses and riders to perform at their very best. Olympic gold medallist Laura Collett said: “Cornbury is

amazing - the organisers provide horses, owners and riders with fantastic facilities, courses and ground. I’m really excited to see what’s new this year - I love the sound of the woodland festival feel, and it is great to see innovation coming to our sport.”

An Event Horse What makes a horse,

The enigma of an eventer. Ah. While you can quickly make a stereotype of a dressage horse, a show jumper, a racehorse, a polo pony, the same is not true of an event horse.

Many may have found their forte in the horse trials field with a switch from another discipline.

Some are born, some are made, but from physicality and athleticism, the common thread is that of temperament, trust and tenacity for what sets event horses apart, is their heart.

WHAT IS REQUIRED OF AN EVENT HORSE?

A one-day-event consists of three phases something like a triathlon for humans. With the sport having its origins in military training the horse must have an aptitude

and willingness for three phases;

The first phase is the dressage test where a horse demonstrates its obedience and suppleness – that it can perform the moves accurately around the dressage arena with a relaxed mind and body – the judge awarding good marks but these are then translated into penalties – eg if the judge gives 7/10 for every move, averaging 70%, the partnership then carries forward 30penalties.

The second phase is the show jumping test where the horse demonstrates its carefulness to jump – penalties are incurred for knock downs or refusals.

The third phase is the cross-country test where the horse and rider travel at speeds of up to 40mph over solid obstacles requiring accuracy, power, speed and bravery. Ditches, water, steps up and

down, narrow fences, owl holes and large brush fences that the horse jumps through rather than over are all part of this test. The challenge then, is a horse that’s brave and tough for the cross-country, is still careful enough for the show jumping and calm and relaxed for the dressage. There’s training required to achieve prowess in each phase, but to pull off three good performances in each phase on the same day is an extra challenge.

Some horses bred for dressage have been found to love jumping and cross-country and made the switch to eventing; some horses bred for show jumping are found to not have quite enough scope and power for the highest level but become great event horses, some horses bred for racing have such a good brain and athleticism that they can use their ability to

learn dressage, show jumping and crosscountry. Even former polo ponies to native breeds to cobs have found their way to eventing!

TEMPERAMENT

To adapt to the three phases; the discipline of dressage, the precision of show jumping and the flair of cross-country takes an adaptable brain as well as an adaptable body. Trainability is key – many a talented horse has failed to reach it’s potential because without trainability, event horses are facing a battle.

It takes the talent and patience of the rider to utilise the horse’s conscience for a clear show jumping round, but then for that same combination to still be willing to leap off huge drops, over fences into space, into dark woods, water or gallop through a tunnel of spectators.

This takes a partnership and essentially, trust. It is the partnership built step-bystep that tends to take horses to the pinnacle of the sport. And as evidence of this, few horses switch riders successfully at top level – even a horse with an unblemished record can take time to trust their new rider and make errors which means they lose confidence.

That said, many a professional will say they’ve sold the easiest and best horses on – because they are saleable. While developing, these horses tend to adapt steadily to their new riders or, if they’ve been sold as a schoolmaster, they’ll be competing at a lower level, which they can do with confidence. These remarkable horses teach developing riders and provide them with the experience and confidence they can then imbue into their younger horses, and so they have immense value for riders, and for the sport.

TENACITY

To dig deep, a generous mind, to try, to save, to fight. The tenacity of a successful event horse knows no bounds. The challenge of the traditional long-format three-day-event included an endurance test so arduous that horses would compete in just one such competition every six months.

The ‘long-format’ was tough on the horses, but it’s format of dressage then the speed and endurance test and then the show jumping meant horses had to show they could adapt from a long, galloping, free frame to a collected, careful, power jumping, even when they were stiff and tired from the rigours of the previous day. That order is still used at elite levels, but

without a warm up ‘roads and tracks’ or steeplechase section, the ‘short-format’ is akin to taking the ‘long-format’ – from an ultra-marathon to a Tough Mudder event. Still challenging, still intense, the horse now has regular competitions at this level – roughly every six weeks as opposed to every six months and so tenacity still plays a part, to compete, have a few days off, then quickly come back up to peak suppleness, attentiveness and fitness ready for the next test. And at amateur level, the horse will still have to be tough, competing perhaps every week or so throughout the season from March to October!

PHYSICALITY

Undoubtedly the two biggest factors in a horse’s career are that of temperament and physicality. To maintain a sound mind is one thing, to maintain a sound body, quite another. The two do go hand in hand – a tense mind leads to a tense body and a tense body, leads to a tense mind. Equally, tension increases the risk of injury, and so the fitness of a horse (and rider), to compete in eventing must not be underestimated. Some horses, typically thoroughbreds, are naturally fit, naturally athletic, but might struggle to be powerful and strong. Others, typically warmbloods, are naturally strong

staying calm, mentally.

FITNESS

Along with skills training, a large proportion of the event horse’s life is aimed at enhancing their fitness – fitness to perform AND fitness to prevent injury.

The base of fitness work is to ‘harden’ the bones and tendons. Typically this involves walking on hard surfaces (road work), as a young horse aged 4-5yrs and for a period of weeks after any rest period.

From this base, muscle strength is built from working on soft surfaces – whether arena sand or riding on a beach and cardiovascular fitness from hill work to gallop work, giving rise to a complete athlete with the structural, aerobic, cardiovascular, and muscular fitness required.

Work that builds strength without the weight of the rider; long-reining, lungeing, to using a horse-walker or water treadmill are of huge benefit.

But a good rider, who utilises their skill to give a horse the right kind of training, at the right time from their feel in the saddle is invaluable. Considering themselves the horse’s personal trainer they’ll employ dressage exercises to develop relaxation and strength, gridwork for balance, scope, confidence and footwork and fast work to get those airways and blood vessels open. Being an event horse is like joining a health club where the gym, pool, hydrotherapy, yoga, pilates and nutritional support are all on hand! It means even horses are rarely bored as they have a varied diary with daily work, rest and play!

and powerful but need training to be more athletic and supple.

Yet to be a successful event horse they must be like a boxer, powerful yet light and quick on their feet, able to react, physically, while

DRESS TO

Kathy Carter looks at what to wear for the disciplines of eventing, showjumping and dressage.

Bear in mind that these guidelines are for affiliated shows – more informal, local shows will be more relaxed, and you will generally just need to be smart and comfortable, and of course, safe. Check your governing body’s manual and dress code, to be sure.

EVENTING DRESSAGE - HELMET

Protective headwear, meaning a fastened safety helmet meeting current standards, must be worn by anyone mounted at an affiliated eventing competition. If you haven’t got the budget for a multiplehelmet wardrobe, you can use a darkcoloured velvet hat cover over a jockey skull cap for eventing dressage. Or you may choose an entirely different black or blue helmet for the dressage test, such as a traditional velvet-covered hat, or one of the more modern versions with a glossy or matte finish, and fancy trimmings like subtle glitter or sparkles.

EVENTING DRESSAGE - SHIRT

Your show shirt will see you through both the dressage and showjumping phases, if you are competing in a full eventing competition, as opposed to just a cross country contest. These shirts are typically white, however other, more cheerful colours are available, usually with a white ‘bib’ front that’s noticeable beneath a jacket. However, don’t forget that if jackets are waived due to hot weather conditions, you will be wearing your shirt by itself, and the colour will be on show; so a simple, white-coloured show shirt is advised.

EVENTING DRESSAGESTOCK AND TIE

If you’re wearing a more formal, plain jacket as opposed to a hacking jacket, you would typically wear a white stock – essentially a long piece of material

Impress

with a slot at one end - with a stock shirt boasting a top button, to which the stock tie attaches. It is typically fastened with a discreet stock pin. You Tube has many videos explaining the tying process. Alternatively you can choose a show shirt with an integrated collar, or use a removeable, pre-tied stock. Men wear a simple white shirt and white tie for dressage, which women can also do, as an alternative to a stock and show shirt. (If you do choose a coloured hacking jacket, you can wear a contrasting tie.)

EVENTING DRESSAGE - BOOTS

Your boots will be long and plain, and black-coloured only, from advanced level onwards. They will be made from either smooth leather, or faux-leather. But you can wear short boots with smart, matching gaiters (like half-chaps) if preferred. This

can be a useful option if you are doing lots of walking, as some smart long boots can be stiffer at the ankles. Below intermediate level, you have the option of browncoloured boots or gaiters, as well as black.

EVENTING DRESSAGE - BREECHES

From advanced level onwards, your breeches will be white. Below intermediate, your breeches can be white, fawn or buff, but still discreet. Just bear in mind that white breeches would typically only be paired with black boots or gaiters, and beige, buff or fawn breeches can also be worn with brown boots or gaiters.

EVENTING DRESSAGE - JACKET

Your show jacket is really the piece of attire that ties the whole outfit together – the finishing touch. For eventing dressage, it can be any single, conservative colour in

FASHION

a muted tone; typically this is plain black or blue, or conservatively patterned, like a hacking jacket in discreet tweed. From advanced level onwards, a black or dark blue tailcoat is worn instead of a short jacket.

EVENTING DRESSAGE - GLOVES

Your gloves can be any plain colour; whilst white, beige or cream gloves are generally preferred by organisers, remember that white gloves will show off your hands more, which you may not want!

EVENTING CROSS-COUNTRYHELMET

Any up-to-standard jockey skull helmet will be suitable for XC, providing it does not have a fixed peak. Do remember the ‘always wear a hat when mounted’ rulethis includes anyone warming up around

the facility, and family members casually riding, for example warming your horse down after a test or round. For XC you will wear a removable hat cover with a flexible peak over a skull cap helmet, and the hat cover can be in your chosen cross country colours if you would like, as opposed to keeping the same velvet hat cover you used for the dressage test.

EVENTING CROSS-COUNTRYOTHER XC ATTIRE

Much of the outfit already described will see you through to the XC stage, although it is recommended to wear a long-sleeved shirt or sweater, to protect your arms – many people wear an XC shirt in their preferred colours or patterns. Your breeches and boots will remain the same. Body protectors are mandatory, and must be British Equestrian Trade

Air jackets are optional, but must be worn over a permitted body protector for the XC phase. However, they can be worn for showjumping and dressage phases without a body protector.

EVENTING SHOWJUMPING –ALL ATTIRE

You can wear the same outfit as you did for your dressage contest for the jumping phase, although from advanced level, you could wear a conservatively-coloured burgundy jacket, if preferred. You can wear the same helmet you used for either dressage or XC, as fixed peak helmets may be worn. Hat covers should be dark blue, black or brown for the jumping phase.

SHOWJUMPING

The rules for purely showjumping competitions, as opposed to the jumping

phases of an eventing contest, are broadly the same; however the ‘look’ is generally slightly sportier, and more fashion-focused. Bear in mind however that if you’re opting for anything bold, bright and eye catching, all eyes will be on you! Light pastel-coloured shirts can be worn in pure showjumping, and white breeches tend to be most popular legwear.

Jackets of any traditional, dark colour can be worn, providing they are not in the British Team colours (dark blue with red collar and white piping), and are typically shorter and in a stretchy, sportier fabric than seen in dressage circles, or even the jumping phase of eventing. You can even get zip-up jackets that have buttons on the front, for an outwardly-traditional look! Breeches for showjumping are also lightcoloured, although pale-yellow and grey are also permitted, alongside the usual whites, beiges and fawn colours.

Your show shirt will be similar to that already described, with a white collar, although in hot weather when jackets may not be worn (at the organisers’ discretion), it is more commonplace to see discreetlycoloured shirts flying around the ring, providing the collar and cuffs (if longsleeved) are white. In showjumping, show shirts may be worn with a stock or tie that matches the jacket, as described above, however a show shirt with a high white collar can be worn without a stock or tie.

Again, you will need either dark-coloured (in this case, black, brown or navy) long boots. It is less common to see the

‘short boots and gaiters’ styling in the showjumping ring, but if you’re unsure, contact the show organiser, to clarify. The styling of long showjumping boots tends to be more sporty and casual, so it is common for example to see mahogany or patent tops. Gloves, air jackets and body protectors are optional within showjumping contests. Protective headgear must be worn at all times when riding, with the harness securely fastened, and the helmet must meet current safety standards. Fixed peak helmets may be worn.

DRESSAGE

The dress code for pure dressage is broadly the same as already described here, although at advanced tests and upwards, riders have the option of a blue or black tailcoat. Bright colours or bold patterns are not permitted on a dressage show jacket, however subtle pinstripe, coloured collars and contrast piping are permitted, as is discreet tweed. Competitors may ride without jackets in a fitted waistcoat in muted tones, in warmer weather. As mentioned, there are some lovely helmets available designed especially for dressage, with fancy trimmings designed to catch overhead lights during indoor events. Gloves are compulsory, and light-colours are preferred.

Members of the Armed Forces or Police Force may wear their uniforms at all competitions if preferred, with suitable protective headwear.

Quite possibly, the comfiest riding tights I have ever worn in my life!

The fit, fabric, colour and design are faultless. Hack & Hound really have thought of everything to ensure these not only offer comfort but are also practical. The large waistband creates comfort, whilst the honeycomb silicone seat ensures you feel safe in the saddle. When your horse is as ‘flighty’ as mine, this function is a must! The side pocket means I can pop my phone in and forget that it’s there, great for riding and walking. On that, whilst walking my dog in my Hack & Hound riding tights I unfortunately got caught in a rather large down pour, to say I was drenched is an understatement, however the fast-drying fabric used ensured I stayed comfortable, and then dried very quickly, another brilliant function. Then there is the stunning design, the attention to detail is second to none, from the vibrant colour, subtle stitched branding to the floral ankles, these really are a must have!

ALFRESCO LIVING

In recent years, outdoor living and entertaining has become ever more popular, whether its for hosting family gatherings, entertaining guests, or simply enjoying meals in the fresh air.

outdoor areas that make hosting outside a breeze.

One excellent way to achieve this is by incorporating an outdoor kitchen into your back garden or patio. An outdoor kitchen

be more likely to create something really special.

While larger gardens offer more flexibility, those with limited space can still be transformed into a stunning oasis with the addition of an outdoor kitchen. A small garden should never be viewed as a limitation when it comes to creating a glorious outdoor space!

LARGE OR SMALL

Whether your space is large or small it doesn’t really matter too much. In smaller areas its how the space is configured that counts, so even a tiny kitchen will lend a sense of convenience and pragmatism. In larger areas, as much as humans love open space,

38 | SUMMER 2023 Your Horse & Country Magazine - YOUR COUNTRY PROPERTY
OAKWOOD EUROPE PTY.LTD Clean, Condition and Maintain The most effective and efficient way to protect and clean your tack!

we also really enjoy human scale design, so either way an outdoor kitchen is a great way to break free from the confines of indoor walls and make the most of your outdoor environment.

The key components are a heat source for cooking, work surface, serving surface, some storage, ideally a water source for hand washing and some low energy lighting. How rustic or luxurious you go with it is up to you.

The first thing to consider though is the kitchen layout, which might be a little different to whatever you have indoors if potentially you’ll be catering for more sociable events with larger-than-usual

numbers of people. You might want want to be able to see the faces of your guests in between turning the sausages or stirring the pot, in which case you might want to be facing out towards them. Alternatively you might prefer to keep the hot stuff off to the side or the back against

a wall or fence, away from excitable children. In this instance a peninsula style arrangement might give you the best of both worlds, both socialising and safety, so consider your priorities before deciding on what you think looks nicest.

A well-thought-out layout will enable you to make the most of your outdoor kitchen, regardless of the available space.

You want easy access to all necessary items to ensure smooth workflow during food preparation and cooking, so storage for ingredients, utensils and serve ware close at hand is essential. Consider factors like the proximity of the grill to the prep area, adequate counter space for food prep, and the placement of a sink to give you the greatest convenience possible. Compact kitchen islands or L-shaped configurations can provide ample countertop area for food preparation while maximizing floor space for movement. Also when it comes to pizza ovens, these don’t have to be monolithic brick structuresyou might prefer a compact one that sits on the countertop!

MULTI-FUNCTION PIECES

Incorporating features that serve multiple purposes is always a good idea, for example, installing a bar counter with integrated storage shelves underneath would be ideal. Or it might be more beneficial to build in seating around a dining table. Similarly, integrating a built-in fire pit or fireplace can create a cosy ambience, extending the usability of the space into the cooler evenings. By incorporating versatile elements, you can ensure that your outdoor kitchen caters to a wide range of activities and provides year-round enjoyment.

We all know how much better we feel when we are connected to the nature, and that the best design tends to seamlessly integrate with natural surroundings. By designing your outdoor kitchen in harmony with both your property and the landscape, you can create a cohesive and inviting aesthetic. Incorporating appropriately natural and ideally local materials is the best way to do this. Natural elements like stone, wood, and of course greenery will always trump man-made shop bought furnishings wherever possible, of course, and will only enhance your connection with nature

whilst enjoying those delicious meals. Another thing to consider is how transient or permanent you want your kitchen and dining area to be, before committing to any custom designs or bespoke in-builds.

Folding tables and chairs can be stored away when not in use, freeing up valuable space. .

If you are keen on the sleek, modern look then you might prefer to construct a clean lined kitchen one using an eco-concrete. Or if delightfully ramshackle and rustic is more suited to you then you’ll likely prefer timber. Either way you can also maximise vertical space with shelves, hooks hanging racks to maximise storage capacity for your utensils, cookware, and other kitchen essentials, without occupying valuable floor area.

GREEN FINGERS

Vertical space does not need to be saved only for storage however, it can be great for gardening too. Incorporating vertical planters or trellises allows you to liven up your design with greenery using a minimal footprint. Utilise walls, fences, or even the sides of your outdoor kitchen structure to create vertical greenery. Not only does this

add beauty and freshness to your space, but if you opt to grow herbs here it also provides easy access to fresh ingredients for your outdoor cooking endeavours!

During the peak summer months, shade becomes essential for a comfortable outdoor kitchen experience. However, in a small garden, installing large shade structures can take up valuable space and overpower the area. If your garden is still young and the trees and plants are still yet to be able to provide any shade then consider pretty parasols or shade sails to provide protection from the sun while maintaining an open and airy feel in your outdoor area.

INSPIRING LIGHTING

Thoughtful lighting design can transform any garden into a cosy and inviting space after dark. Strong overhead light sources

will feel overpowering and uncomfortable so instead consider softer options such as festoon string lights, wall-mounted sconces, or LED strip lights under counters. You could even celebrate a special tree with a colourful uplighter wash, and create a little bit of magic along a winding footpath with twinkly lights in the ground - whether they’re simple candles of jars or solar powered orbs. It is definitely worth remembering to add in some safety lighting for any late night lemon chopping for cocktail shaking, and being certain your meat is thoroughly cooked through on that barbecue before feasting. With careful planning and creative design ideas, you can transform your garden into a delightful spot that serves as an extension of your living space, offering countless opportunities for enhancing your lifestyle and encouraging you to spend more time outdoors.

The Old Palace is a Grade II* Listed country house which is rich in architectural historic interest, but which was the subject of a comprehensive programme of refurbishment and updating, several years ago. With origins dating back to medieval times, the site had been used by Arch Bishops of Canterbury as a stopping off point on their journeys to and from Canterbury. The present house is an amalgam of styles through the centuries and displays architectural detail from the fourteenth century through to the twenty first. Coursed ragstone external elevations under a pitched tile roof with some windows dating to the sixteenth century, medieval oak floor boards and inglenook fireplaces together with exposed timbers and oak latched doors are some of the aged features remaining. Twenty first century attributes include complete re wiring, new plumbing, a ground source heating system and a Control4 home automative system.

Making Sense of Laminitis

Although any horse or pony can be affected by laminitis, some can be more susceptible than others with up to 90% of laminitis episodes linked to an underlying hormonal disorder, while excess weight gain can more than double the risk of laminitis developing. Therefore, it is crucial to carefully monitor your horse to help prevent future episodes.

Weight Watching

It is important to monitor your horses bodyweight and to be careful to not allow your horse to become too fat as obesity is a predisposing factor in the onset of laminitis. Use a weigh tape to monitor your horses weight weekly as this will allow you to identify any changes in condition early on so that any action can be taken quickly.

A horse of moderate weight should have a layer of fat over the ribs so that they are not visible but easily felt with the rump beginning to appear rounded and hip bones just visible. Shoulders and neck should blend smoothly into body.

If you horse is overweight it is important that weight loss is achieved, although it is crucial that this happens gradually without causing any stress. For horses that are overweight a high fibre diet should be fed choosing stalkier hay that offers a lower nutritional value. It is also a good idea to consider soaking hay before feeding as it has been found that soaking hay for up to an hour can get rid of 56% of its water-soluble carbohydrates.

Grazing Dangers

Spring and autumn are well known risk factors for laminitics when we see a flush of grass growth, but it is also recommended to avoid turning out on frosty grass in winter when fructan concentration is high. If a lot of grass is available strip grazing will help limit

the horses total grass intake as will periods of turnout in a grazing muzzle. For some horses it may be necessary to limit turn out time and this should be done when the fructan content of the grass is at its lowest.

The level of fructans in grasses rise during the day, peaking in the afternoon to early evening so allow your horse to graze in the very early hours of the morning when the level of fructans in the grass will be at there lowest.

The horse’s fibre intake however should not be comprised and it is important that the fibre levels are maintained to ensure healthy gut function.

Starch Overload

Many owners often over estimate the amount of work their horse is doing which can lead to over feeding resulting in weight gain. Reducing the incidence of laminitis is most effective through dietary management so it is important to reduce the amount of starch from cereals that reaches the hindgut.

Studies suggests that feeds below 10% - 12% are classed as low in starch but if you do have a horse with any dietary concerns then it is always best to check the nutritional analysis found on the back of the feed bag or contact the manufacture directly to find out the starch content of the feed.

Where cereals are required, it is seen that most manufactures cook the cereal content of their feeds to increase digestibility of the starch

content. This concentrated source of energy is ideally utilized in the small intestine but if too much is consumed at any one time, then it passes into the hind gut where it can disrupt the bacterial population so it is important to follow the simple dietary rule of ‘feeding little and often’.

Most horses will do well on a simple high fibre feed that supplies low energy levels necessary for horses in light to moderate work. Supplements can also be useful to feed alongside a high fibre diet to help ensure the horse is receiving a fully balanced diet whilst keeping starch to a minimum.

Alternative Calorie Sources

Building condition on an underweight laminitic should be done slowly, through a diet that is high in calories. Most conditioning feeds should be avoided in this instance as they are likely to be too high in starch unless they are specifically formulated for horses suffering from a starch and sugar intolerance.

Oil is a great source of calories and current research has proved that oil can be an extremely beneficial source of slow-release energy, providing twice the amount of energy as carbohydrates from the more traditional cereals. When feeding pure oils, it is important to include additional antioxidants in the diet such as Vitamin E and Selenium to help ensure efficient oil utilisation. Alternatively manufactured high oil supplements can be fed which should already include the necessary nutrients.

Rowen Barbary products suitable for feeding to laminitic horses include Forage ‘n’ Fibre, ReadyFibre Mash, Solution Mash and Sumo Original, with Vitem and Keep Well also being popular supplements.

For more help and advice on feeding horses prone to laminitis please contact Rowen Barbary Horse Feeds on 01948 880598 or visit www.rowenbarbary.co.uk

Laminitis is a common, extremely painful condition estimated to affect 1 in 10 horses every year.

HORSE INSURANCE

What you need to know to keep you and your horse

In today’s world of rising prices, finding ways to save money wherever possible is top of the agenda for most horse owners.

One area that is likely to be examined when it comes to considering outgoings is insurance. It’s certainly wise to have some cover in place to provide financial protection in the event of injury or accident. But how do you make sure that you are adequately protected?

We asked Lisa Ripley, Head of Customer Operations for one of the UK’s leading equine intermediary providers, Harry Hall, for her advice on what to consider when taking out horse and rider insurance.

Lisa said, No matter how much we try to prepare for any eventuality, there is always the chance of something unexpected happening. As such, having the right insurance to provide protection against financial loss is valuable. Think about what you want to have protection for and ensure the policy you purchase meets your needs by reading

your policy and taking note of any terms, exclusions, contributions or excess you will be responsible for. In short, having the right insurance cover can help us cope with whatever the future may bring.”

Lisa continued, If you own a horse, ride a horse, or look after a horse, it’s important you have Public Liability Insurance. This is because if your horse was to injure someone or cause damage to someone else’s property, you could be legally liable for financial compensation. These claims can be significant, but with this insurance in place, you can avoid a huge bill. Without cover, your home or other assets could be at risk if the claim is large.”

Some insurers also offer a legal helpline or cover for legal expenses. u

u Generally, horse owners will insure their horse, tack, trailer or horsebox but leave themselves without any cover.

Personal accident insurance can provide a lump sum to help if you have a serious injury. Also consider the addition of cover for broken bones which is not uncommon.

Some membership schemes include Public Liability and Personal accident as a benefit, along with other add-ons.

Vet Fees

It’s worth considering vet insurance to reduce the financial impact of veterinary intervention. After all, horses are horses, and at some stage in their 4-legged life, they may have an accident or develop a condition that requires a vet. Not all eventualities are covered as standard, and it’s important to check your policy for any exclusions.

For example you might want to consider adding colic cover to your insurance policy, colic cases that need surgery present a particular challenge, as intervention is usually required urgently. In addition, any

period of general anaesthesia should be kept as short as possible. The risks associated with general anaesthetics in horses are greater than in humans or dogs. In colic cases, the situation may be further aggravated due to the release of harmful toxins from the intestine.

After surgery the horse will require significant post-operative care, meaning that the costs involved with colic surgery can typically run into thousands. Most owners would do anything for their horse and having suitable cover for lifesaving surgery provides considerable peace of mind.

Horse Trailer Insurance

Trailers are becoming an increasingly popular alternative to Horseboxes, due to their convenience and price.

Before you commit to a trailer purchase, it is vital to check your vehicle is suitable for towing a trailer along with the laden weight you plan to carry onboard. You can check your vehicle towing capacity in your handbook, on your V5 document or sometimes on a plate on the door sill.

If you transport your horse in a trailer, it’s recommended that you consider an insurance policy to minimise the impact of any unexpected events. It’s also worth checking that your breakdown service supports your trailer recovery including horses on board, as you may need a separate recovery policy.

There is an increase in trailer theft and most insurance policies will require you to keep the trailer in a locked building or u

Do you know your payload before you drive to

an event?

It is very easy to overload a 3500kg horsebox, and even a 7500kg one, as most people don’t take into account passengers, tack, water, hay, and these add to the payload considerably.

For example, an empty 3500kg horsebox normally weighs about 2500kg, leaving 1000kg for the driver and passenger, horse, tack, etc. Many of these horseboxes are stalled for two horses, and that can be a big problem. If you are overloaded and have an accident, your insurance will be invalidated and you could be facing a number of offences, both overloading and licence ones. In recent years, the DVSA has found that more than 80% of LCV’s stopped on the roadside on suspicion of overloading, are in fact overweight.

Why Uprating

You have a limited payload capacity and wish to carry an extra horse or equipment. You don’t want to buy a newer, bigger horsebox so you can save money by converting your current vehicle. You want to avoid a large fine by DVSA.

What to do if you are overloaded.

The first thing is to weigh your horsebox FULLY LOADED with your horse(s), tack, water, food, and passengers so that you know where you stand. Remember to weigh each axle individually as you may find that whilst you may be under the Gross Vehicle Weight, you have actually overloaded the rear axle. This is very common in lightweight horseboxes. Fortunately SvTech can help, and is keen to promote its uprating service for lightweight horseboxes (3500kg), whereby the horsebox can gain an extra 200-300kg in payload. This provides vital payload capability when carrying an extra horse and/ or tack and offers peace of mind for the owner.

We can start the ball rolling by asking customers to fill in an enquiry form and send it back with photos of the Horsebox plate, the weight ticket and Registration Document.

SvTech has carried out extensive work and testing on lightweight models and has covered uprates for most lightweight vehicles. It is worth noting that some uprates require modifications or changes to the vehicle’s braking, tyres and/or suspension, for which SvTech provides a simple purpose-built suspension assister kit. This will take between 1-2 hours for you to fit. Your horsebox will then go for a formal inspection to bring it into the ‘Goods’ category, and, depending on the vehicle’s age, may also require fitment of a speed limiter, for which there are one or two options.

Most importantly, vehicles registered after May 2002 must be fitted with manufacturer’s ABS, if going above 3500kg.

When it comes to confidence, Education is Key!

Education as a whole serves as a catalyst for personal growth, social progress, and economic development. It is a lifelong process that empowers individuals with knowledge, skills, and critical thinking abilities necessary to navigate the complexities of the world. As they say ‘everyday is a school day’ after all.

A good education provides a foundation for acquiring specialised knowledge in

various fields such as animals, science, technology, literature, and arts. It enables individuals to develop expertise in their chosen disciplines, unlocking opportunities for personal and professional growth and its no different when it comes to horses and equine management!

Equine learning encompasses a wide range of disciplines, including equine science, equine management, and equine-assisted therapy, among others.

It combines theoretical knowledge with practical hands-on experience, allowing students to develop a comprehensive understanding of horses and their care. Choosing to pursue an education in equine learning allows individuals to immerse themselves in a world that revolves around these majestic animals.

Moreover, equine learning goes beyond the basic study of horses. It encompasses various aspects such as equine nutrition,

anatomy, physiology, behaviour, training techniques, and stable management. By delving into these areas, students acquire a wealth of knowledge that enables them to become well-rounded professionals in the equine industry. They learn how to provide optimal care for horses, ensure their well-being, and develop effective training methods that promote a strong bond between horse and rider.

Equine learning also offers a wide range of career opportunities. Graduates can choose to work as horse trainers, riding instructors, nutritionists, stable managers, therapists, or perhaps pursue careers in equine research. The versatility of the field

allows individuals to find a niche that resonates with their specific interests and strengths. Whether your passion lies in competitive horse sports, horse breeding, or therapeutic interventions involving horses, there are ample avenues to explore within the equine industry.

So whether you are looking for an career in the equine industry, or perhaps just want to enhance your knowledge and understanding of your horse, do it with confidence by exploring what your local colleagues and learning centres have to offer in the field of equine learning.

Here are just a few examples of how specialist equestrian courses could help you with either your professional or personal development…

1. RIDING SKILLS:

Equestrian education courses provide hands-on training and guidance on horseback riding techniques. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced rider, these courses can help you improve your riding skills, including balance, posture, and control. You’ll learn how to communicate effectively with the horse and develop a harmonious partnership.

2. HORSE CARE AND MANAGEMENT:

Equestrian courses often cover various aspects of horse care and management, including feeding, grooming, health maintenance, and stable management. Understanding how to properly care for horses is essential for their well-being and longevity. These skills are particularly valuable if you own or plan to own horses in the future.

3. SAFETY AWARENESS:

Safety is a crucial aspect of equestrian activities. Equestrian education courses teach you about safety protocols, such as wearing appropriate riding gear, understanding horse behavior, and identifying potential risks. This knowledge helps minimize accidents and ensures a safe environment for both riders and horses.

4. CONFIDENCE AND DISCIPLINE:

Working with horses can boost your confidence and discipline. Horses

are sensitive animals that respond to your body language and emotions. Through equestrian education, you’ll learn how to communicate assertively, develop patience, and exhibit self-control. These skills can translate into other areas of life as well.

5. PHYSICAL FITNESS:

Riding and caring for horses involve physical exertion. Equestrian education courses can improve your fitness level as you engage in activities like riding, grooming, and mucking stalls. Regular participation in these courses can contribute to increased strength, balance, coordination, and cardiovascular fitness.

6. STRESS RELIEF AND MENTAL WELL-BEING:

Spending time with horses and being in nature can be therapeutic. Equestrian education courses provide an opportunity to disconnect from daily stressors and focus on the present moment. Developing a bond with horses and experiencing the outdoors can promote relaxation, reduce anxiety, and enhance overall mental wellbeing.

7. COMPETITIVE OPPORTUNITIES: For those interested in competitive equestrian sports, education courses can lay a solid foundation. These courses often offer training in specific disciplines such as dressage, show jumping, eventing, or western riding. You can learn the technical skills, rules, and strategies required to compete at different levels.

8. NETWORKING AND COMMUNITY:

Equestrian education courses bring together individuals who share a passion for horses. Engaging with like-minded people allows you to expand your network, exchange knowledge and experiences, and potentially find mentors or riding partners. This sense of community fosters a supportive and enjoyable learning environment.

Remember, the benefits you gain from equestrian education courses depend on your commitment, practice, and willingness to learn. It’s important to choose reputable and qualified instructors or institutions that prioritize safety and provide comprehensive training.

Educating on Equine Health

Over the past two decades of caring for horses and helping horse owners, I have come across a number of myths about horse care that need to be busted.

Here are the top 5 myths I regularly encounter from the Horse First Aid Courses I run:

Myth #1- One vaccination can cover all your horses

BUSTED: Vaccinating one horse doesn’t provide immunity to all your horses. Each horse should get Equine Influenza and Tetanus vaccinations.

Myth #2- Cold tea (or any eye med) will work to remedy any eye condition

BUSTED: Eye conditions should be taken as seriously as colic. Horses sometimes suffer from corneal ulcers or uveitis and require different medical treatments.

Myth #3- Sudocrem antiseptic cream is like duct tape for horses

BUSTED: Sudocrem isn’t a cure-all, and it can have a place for minor grazes. However it’s not always a sensible choice because it clogs up the wound, stopping the wound from breathing and delays wound healing.

Myth #4- The more Hibiscrub, the better

BUSTED: I don’t recommend owners use Hibiscrub on everyday cuts and scrapes because it’s too strong. It kills good and bad cells, which delays healing. Keep it for cleaning your own hands and try saline solution for wound cleaning instead.

Myth #5- You must keep a horse with colic walking BUSTED: It can be helpful to gently hand walk a horse with colic, but human and horse safety must be considered. ‘Forced walking’ is no longer recommended. Instead put your horse somewhere safe where they can roll or lie down and you can keep out of the way - like an arena.

Find out more about careers in the Horseracing industry

When people think about Horseracing, the first job that comes to mind is being a Jockey. In fact, there are hundreds of job roles available in the industry from working with horses in a racing yard or stud farm to working on a racecourse or in an administrative role. There are 59 racecourses in the UK with an array of jobs available. It is no surprise that Horseracing is the second largest spectator sport in the UK and is the largest sporting employer, supporting over 85,000 jobs.

If you have never had the chance to learn to ride don’t worry; in the racing industry we have specialist training colleges that can teach you to ride. There are also many jobs caring for horses that don’t require you to be able to ride at all. Take Stud Grooms for example, they care for

mares and their foals - to do this job you would need training to know how to handle the horses, groom them and look after them as they grow up. It is a very rewarding job - one day you might see them win on a racecourse too.

If you like riding though, or fancy giving it a try, working as a Racing Groom could be just the thing for you. A Racing Groom will care for racehorses on a day to day basis, grooming them, feeding them and mucking out their stables. A Racing Groom will also ride up to 4 horses a day, both in riding arenas and on the gallops.

Our aim at Careers in Racing is to help people find a rewarding job role, in an industry that they are passionate about. We have dedicated

training providers and courses available from Apprenticeships to an MBA, riding and nonriding.

So, if you want to work with horses and want to do something a bit out of the ordinary then you need to take a look at the training available. There are four training providers for you to choose from - the National Horseracing College in Yorkshire, the British Racing School in Suffolk, the Scottish Racing Academy in Scotland and the National Stud in Suffolk. They all offer a variety of training courses at different levels, from Apprenticeships to courses for those with no experience at all. Many of the courses on offer will be residential for a short period of time and include help in finding a suitable job on successful completion of the course.

To find out more about this training and explore other jobs and careers, visit www.careersinracing.com or get in touch with us on our social media channels @careersinracing

FIND THE RIGHT PRICE

You are unsure about the selling price? For orientation you can search on ehorses for horses that are similar to your horse. This will give you a first overview. There is no rule of thumb for setting the price.

FINDING THE RIGHT TITLE

One of the first things prospective buyers will see is the title of your ad. So choose a meaningful title that makes people want to get to know the horse better.

You should never forgo photos and especially videos when trying to give a potential buyer a comprehensive impression of your horse. Remember: You never get a second chance to make a first impression!

ATTENTION: Pay attention to the copyrights. Please only use images that you hold the rights to. Third parties must also give their consent if they are to be seen in photos or videos.

= short clips of everyday situations (grooming, loading etc.)

= pay attention to exposure & quality

YOUR CONTACT DETAILS

The first customer contact is extremely important. Here, the decision is made as to whether you can convince the prospective customer of your horse. So if you are unable to attend at certain times of the day, it is best to include this directly in the description text of your advertisement.

Feeding Facts

Whether or not you need a supplement or balancer depends on your horse’s diet, as most compound feeds are fortified to provide a complete nutritional ration, if fed at the recommended levels.

As an example, “good doers” fed just forage would benefit from a balancer, perhaps with a handful of chaff for palatability, to increase their nutritional uptake, but horses fed a branded, fortified feed are unlikely to need extra supplements

for general health.

However, if there’s an extra need for further nutrients for wellness elements like calming, hoof health, joint mobility, digestive health, breeding and coat health, then a targeted supplement may be worthwhile. The choice is incredibly large with hundreds of products available, so do speak with your local feed store or a feed and supplement manufacturer, to discuss your horse or pony’s needs. Here, Kathy Carter answers some frequently asked questions.

SHOULD I FEED LESS HAYLAGE THAN HAY, IN A COMPARABLE RATION?

People used to limit haylage, perhaps because in its early development it was higher in energy. Giving insufficient haylage results in an (undesirable) comparable drop in the animal’s fibre intake.

Today’s branded haylage is still very palatable, so horses may eat it more quickly, potentially leading to boredom and stereotypical behaviours.

Haylage contains considerably more water than hay, so in fact we need to feed about one and a quarter times as much haylage as hay. In fact, haylage can be seen as preferable to hay, as the quality is consistent and it’s less dusty.

FEEDING FACTS
As the summer turns to autumn, horse owners are preparing for the colder months. Kathy Carter answers some all-important questions about maintaining your equine friend’s health ...

AN UNBALANCED DIET

There are so many factors which affect a horse’s requirements including age, breed, weight, exercise, forage. All of these can “unbalance” their diet, and an unbalanced diet can lead to nutritional deficiencies which, over time, can cause problems. Supplementation helps bridge the gap and ensures that your horse’s daily nutritional needs are catered for.

Without a fully functioning digestive system, your horse can’t absorb other nutrients to their full availability. Stabling and domestication cause further issues as your horse’s gut is naturally much better when he is moving and foraging. Concentrated feeds and stress can lead to problems, particularly gastric ulcers.

LOWERING ACIDITY

Lower acidity levels, by feeding a supplement such as Equine 74’s Gastric Conditioner which promotes a healthy stomach, and is an effective acid buffer, along with including a live yeast which supports the hind gut digestion.

PROTECTING JOINTS

If your horse is ridden on a variety of surfaces the chances, are you will subject his joints to heavy forces, hacking on roads, fields and preforming in a school can all add extra strain.

There are a variety of joint supplements on the market that come in many forms such as, liquid, powder and feed.

CALMERS

If horses are limited to little or no turnout, feeding a calmer can become an essential part of their diet to help ease their “fight or flight” reaction.

Calmers have been formulated to contain nutrients which are required for the nervous system, such as magnesium, or which have calming properties, such as chamomile.

Some calmers are fed daily, whereas others are for ad hoc use, and are perfect for one-off stressful situations, such as travelling, clipping or farrier visits.

JENKINSONS – A RETRO HAYNET WITH A MODERN MESSAGE

A jute haynet called the Crofton has been launched by Elico Equestrian. The natural, rustic-coloured net is robust enough for the most enthusiastic equine eater, yet it’s completely biodegradable at the end of its life.

Just as jute or cotton bags win out over plastic carriers for shopping, now your customers can make an environmentally friendly choice about haynets too. Jute haynets were commonplace 40 years ago. But this new product is an improvement on the traditional design … Its square bottom makes it tidy in the stable and easy to fill.

The Elico Crofton Jute Haynet is a conventional 40” long and has a standard mesh size.

Jute is widely considered to be a sustainable crop, grown with minimal use of fertilizers or pesticides. On disposal, it decomposes within one to two years leaving no threat to the earth.

The Crofton Jute Haynet is made with no plastic, nylon or metal attachments – just jute.

The degradation of jute is accelerated by wet conditions, therefore these haynets are best suited for long-term indoor use.

Warning! The Elico Crofton Jute Haynet has a subtle but wonderful earthy smell which may cause some horse owners to reminisce.

FLOURISH - Feed For Life All horses ~ All life stages

FLOURISH HORSE HEALTH was born from a need and the understanding of how horses can maintain health and equilibrium throughout their lives. Horses have been an integral part of our history and lives for thousands of years. They have carried and pulled us, protected us, fought with us, and stood loyally beside us. We believe it is now our turn to give back and really consider them for the species they are, regardless of the job they do or the role they play in our lives.

Environment, habitat and feeding practices have changed enormously for the horse, often to suit our lifestyle and routine. In general, horses have adapted well to most of the demands and changes imposed on them, and in some respects, their lifestyle and conditions have improved greatly. However, despite being far removed from grazing the open plains, the horse’s digestive physiology has not evolved for 21st Century living and remains that of a ‘trickle feeding

herbivore’ designed for digesting a varied selection of fibrous foliage throughout the day/night. It is proven that Feral horses who graze in herds and follow natural equine behaviour patterns do not suffer metabolic and digestive disorders which are so commonly seen today. Therefore, we need to understand the causes and impact that the modern-day equine diet is having on our horses and look back at their natural, evolved feeding behaviour.

ONE FEED FOR LIFE

Due to the unique formulation and compatibility to the horse’s sensitive digestive system, FLOURISH can be safely fed to all horses in all disciplines and life-stages. Our FLOURISH

Horse Feed Concept takes the complexity and guess work out of feeding different horses with a range of feeds or unnecessary, expensive supplements. The high digestibility and health enhancing properties of FLOURISH means that simple quantity adjustment is all that is needed to

meet your individual horse’s daily energy and nutrient requirements.

COMPLETE NUTRITION

FLOURISH Original was our signature, pioneering feed, developed almost 25 years ago as the first complete, cerealfree horse feed ever developed. All the ingredients were chosen, not only for their digestibility and suitability for the sensitive equine digestive system, but also to provide optimum nutrient levels and negate the use of daily supplements. (unless medicinal)

FLOURISH Evolve was developed to recognise that, over time, horses have more complex needs, with many suffering metabolic and digestive challenges due to modern day dietary and environmental stressors. Therefore, we have evolved our feed to help meet those needs by adding our bespoke herbal blend, aimed specifically at the microbiome and intestinal lining whilst maintaining the foundation of our long-established signature feed.

Bringing Nature Back

As equine physiologists, we understand the modern day challenges for horses, and have created our unique Holistic Horse Feed and Ayurvedic Nutritional Solutions to support the sensitive digestive system and microbiome of horses throughout the UK, Europe and beyond.

Alfie’s owner, Pam, had been diagnosed with a degenerative disorder which affected her ability to care for him. She was also trying to leave an abusive relationship but would not leave until she had secured a safe place for Alfie. We managed to safely remove Alfie to Oak Tree, which enabled Pam to move to a more suitable and safe home. We arranged for Pam to see Alfie again, before he went to his new home.

LEAVE HORSES, PONIES & DONKEYS A GIFT IN YOUR WILL

Over our 38-year existence legacies have literally been a lifeline to the Trust and to horses like Horlicks. We receive no government funding and legacies are vital in ensuring we can continue to give equines in Wales a chance of a safe and loved future.

Lluest itself was the legacy of Ginny Hadjuckiewicz, she was so distressed by the appalling conditions and handling of wild hill ponies and foals in local sales, that in 1985 she decided to found a charity for Welsh equines. To offer them a refuge and safe haven. Sadly, Ginny lost her own life in 1994 at the young age of 38, leaving behind Lluest Horse and Pony Trust as her Legacy. Since then, we have worked tirelessly to continue the hard work of Ginny, to rescue, rehabilitate and find approved long term Guardian loan homes for horses, ponies and donkeys who have been the victims of cruelty, neglect, abandonment, and poor circumstances. From feral mountain ponies and tiny orphan foals to neglected thoroughbreds and frightened mules, we've given them all a second chance to live a life worth living, both at our centre and in loving homes through our guardianship scheme.

Lluest

Backing young horses with respect

The approach is calm, respectful, systematic and with the welfare and the soundness of the horse at the forefront at all times. No rushed jobs or forced systems used here. The horse must be given the time to understand and to develop the muscle and strength to carry the rider with ease and confidence and in a good non damaging posture, so that he or she has a future. Long-reining, see on left, is very important at this stage. So much can be achieved on straight lines with no damage to weak young joints. Submission is not achieved through exhaustion but through understanding and the ability to be able to work with us and not against us.

For almost 100 years World Horse Welfare has been at the forefront of horse welfare in the UK and around the world, rescuing and rehoming the most vulnerable horses here, educating owners of working horses in some of the poorest countries globally and improving welfare standards across horse sport as well as the movement of horses in Europe. The charity’s founder Ada Cole had a clear vision and continues to be the inspiration behind all that the charity does to drive positive change for horse welfare today. In the 1920s Ada enlisted the help of people from all walks of life to give horses a voice, garnering support for her important work, and the vast expanse of the charity’s work is still entirely funded by voluntary donations –and around sixty per cent of the work they do for horses is made possible thanks to gifts in Wills.

Rebecca Stojak, Head of Equine Law and Senior Associate at Geldards LLP explains how simple it is to support a cause that

is important to you by including them in your Will: “There’s lots of jargon around Wills, but in simple terms you can leave anything to your favourite charity from a sum of money, to a piece of jewellery or even a property. We strongly recommend you have an open and honest conversation with your loved ones about supporting a charity in your Will to avoid any disputes later on. Involving a solicitor will ensure that nothing is overlooked and that all the correct procedures are followed to ensure your wishes are carried out after your death, but this doesn’t have to be a big expense with many charities, including World Horse Welfare, being part of the National Free Wills Network.”

Each year World Horse Welfare receives around 3,000 concerns from members of the public about vulnerable horses and its network of UK-based Field Officers responds, bringing around 300 horses in need of care and expertise into one of the four Rescue and Rehoming Centres.

Globally, there are around 112 million working horses and World Horse Welfare works in some of the most deprived areas of the world educating owners to improve husbandry and hone skills in farriery and harness-making. Ada Cole established the charity in response to the cruelty she witnessed on the docks at Antwerp where horses were being transported from the UK for slaughter in appalling conditions. World Horse Welfare remains faithful to her ambition to abolish long distance transport for slaughter in Europe and their work has resulted in a dramatic drop in the numbers of horses making these unnecessary journeys, as well as vastly improved welfare standards. However, there will be no let up on the part of the charity until they fulfil their founders ambition for the trade to stop once and for all.

Non-Ridden Horses Find Loving Homes Thanks To Charity Scheme

Laura and Sherbert Castonet has found her forever home Natalie and Aladdin Megan and Bayou Heidi and Leicester Hayley and Flipper

As one of the UK’s largest equine welfare charities, Bransby Horses has around a thousand unwanted, mistreated and abandoned horses in its care.

The charity’s welfare work involves responding to calls about equines in need, working with the local community to improve equine health and wellbeing and assisting with large-scale rescues, involving multiple animals, often in collaboration with other charities.

Having the space and resources to be able to continue with this work is key to their sustainability as a charity and this is achieved in part through a bespoke rehoming scheme.

Currently the rehoming team oversee over 600 horses in foster care as all of them remain under the ownership of Bransby Horses.

Rehoming Manager Rosanna Elliott Hart said: “If we didn’t rehome some of the horses we have, we wouldn’t be able to help those most in need. For the ones that can be rehomed, we do everything we can to match them with the right person or family.”

Under the Perfect Partner scheme, a fosterer looks after the horse as if it were their own but, the Bransby Horses Team continue to oversee them with regular visits and updates, and should a situation change, the horse could be returned.

Rosanna added: “Its piece of mind for us and the owner to know that if they really needed to, we could take the horse back. Fortunately, this doesn’t happen too often, as we spend a lot of time beforehand making sure we have a good match and then providing the fosterer with ongoing support and advice.

“We pride ourselves on our rigorous matching process, ensuring every potential foster home is vetted thoroughly.”

In most cases, the animals being put up for rehoming are under 15hh and can’t be ridden. This can make finding them homes doubly challenging, as most people want a horse to do a job, such as riding club activities, hacking or competition.

Rosanna said: “People are starting to see the value of companion ponies. We’ve had a growing interest in applications for nonridden horses that can be taken on walks, which is great.”

“Seeing Bransby Horses’ residents happy and settled in their foster homes gives us a great deal of joy.”

Consider rehoming before buying

Taking on a horse is a big commitment and something that should be considered very carefully. It is Bransby Horses’ hope that anyone thinking about becoming a horse owner considers a rescued equine first and all the advantages that they bring. For more information, advice or to see which horses are looking for new homes now, visit BransbyHorses. co.uk/rehoming

Stig no longer in the dumps

Stig was rescued by Bransby Horses from a landfill site in 2022 and in just under a year, he was enjoying life in a foster home as a companion pony.

The friendly black and white cob made headlines when he was first rescued from the site in Gainsborough.

No owners could be traced and so the charity were able to start him on a rehabilitation programme.

Nine months later he found his perfect match in a foster home providing companionship to an older horse with one of the charity’s supporters.

Stig’s fosterer Victoria said: “I applied to foster a horse from Bransby Horses after my old mare had to be put to sleep leaving my other horse on his own. When they rang me and said they had the perfect pony for us I couldn’t believe it.

“We had three ‘dates’ with Stig, so we could get to know him and be sure he was right for us and we were right for him.

“He will have a home for life with us and I feel so lucky to be able to give him a new start where he will be pampered and loved forever.”

Canine Care SAFETY IN THE SUN

As the summer months roll in, it’s not only us humans that feel the side effects of the hotter months of the year. It is essential for dog owners to prioritize their pets’ safety and wellbeing. Dogs

are susceptible to heat-related illnesses and injuries, and it is crucial to take preventive measures to ensure they stay cool and comfortable during the hot weather.

One of the most important steps in safeguarding your dog during the summer is to limit their exposure to extreme heat. Planning your dog’s walks during the cooler parts of the day, such as early mornings or late evenings when the temperatures are lower

will ensure that they are not exposed to the hottest parts of the day typically between 10 am and 4 pm.

It’s wonderful to have the sun shining whilst spending family time in the garden, with the paddling pool out, enjoying some drinks and a fully loaded barbeque let’s make sure that your dog can also get in on the fun by ensuring that your outdoor spaces have plenty of shaded areas where your dog can retreat from the sun. Whether it’s

a tree, an umbrella, or a covered patio, ample shade is crucial for them to relax and cool down.

KEEPING COOL

As well as providing shaded spots within your outside space its also essential to Keep your home cool too, this can be done with the aid of air conditioning or fans to provide a comfortable environment for your dog. Ventilation can be created by simply opening your windows to create a breeze. Placing cool mats on the floor can

help them to regulate their body temperatures giving them a cool spot to take an afternoon nap. Small, enclosed spaces in the height of summer create very hot and uncomfortable conditions for anyone especially our furry friends, it’s important to leave them in larger spaces where air can move more freely, sanctuaries where direct sun light doesn’t get in. your car, it’s imperative that either your windows are down or even better you have fully working air conditioning. Travelling with your dog should be kept to a minimal amount of time and you should never leave your dog unattended inside of a car.

HYDRATION

Proper hydration is vital for dogs, even more so during the summer

months. A continuous source of fresh water should be on hand at all times, allowing your dog to be able to quench their thirst when needed. Fresh, clean water filled bowls should be easily accessible to them. Consider adding ice cubes to the water to keep it cool. When taking your dog on outings or walks, carry a portable water bottle and a collapsible bowl to offer them water at regular intervals. This way, you can prevent dehydration when away from home.

On particularly hot days, dampen a towel with cool water and allow your dog to lie on it or use it to wipe them down gently. This helps lower their body temperature and provides instant relief.

THE RIGHT TIME TO EXERCISE

We all love to get some exercise and take our dogs for a walk, it is after all one of the most enjoyable parts of owning a dog, they simply provide the best company whilst we are out stretching our legs.

Pavements, roads, and other surfaces can become scorching hot during the summer, posing a risk to your dog’s paws. Its advisory to test the Surface: Before heading out for a walk, it is suggested by some to place your hand on the pavement for a few seconds. If it feels too hot for you, it’s too hot for your dog. Stick to grassy areas or walk your dog on shaded paths to prevent burns or discomfort. Consider using dog booties to protect your dog’s paws from hot surfaces. Booties provide insulation and prevent direct contact with the ground, minimizing the risk of burns. By applying paw balm or a dogspecific moisturizer to your dog’s paw pads to keep them hydrated and less susceptible to cracking or burning. This can be particularly beneficial if your dog spends a lot of time outdoors.

There are lots of ways that we can help protect our dogs from the heat but in case the inevitable happens its always a good idea to have some knowledge on what to

expect if your dog does get heat stroke or to be clued up on what some of the symptoms are.

Recognizing the signs of heatstroke is crucial for immediate intervention. If you notice any of the following symptoms, take prompt action:

EXCESSIVE PANTING

Dogs regulate their body temperature through panting. If you notice excessive, heavy panting, it may indicate heat stress.

LETHARGY

Heatstroke can cause lethargy or weakness in dogs. If your dog seems unusually tired or refuses to engage in activities, it may be a sign of overheating.

VOMITING OR DIARRHOEA

Heatstroke can lead to gastrointestinal distress, including vomiting and diarrhoea.

If your dog shows these symptoms, it is important to seek veterinary attention immediately.

PALE GUMS OR SALIVATING EXCESSIVELY

Dogs with heatstroke may exhibit pale gums or excessive drooling. This indicates a possible heatrelated emergency.

COLLAPSE OR SEIZURES

In severe cases, dogs may collapse or have seizures due to heatstroke. Seek immediate veterinary assistance if this occurs. Keeping your dog safe and cool during the summer is crucial to their well-being. Being mindful of the elements, such as staying out of extreme heat, providing adequate hydration, avoiding hot surfaces, and recognizing the signs of heatstroke, you can ensure a comfortable and safe summer for your furry friend. Remember, a

little extra care and attention go a long way in preventing heatrelated illnesses and ensuring that your dog enjoys the season to the fullest.

Remember, some dogs will want to lay in the heat and sleep, do not let them do this, take them indoors and keep them in doors with a fan or similar if they become persistent on staying out in the sun.

RELIEF FROM THE Summer

The summer months can bring new challenges for our equine friends, from flies, to sunburn. Alexandra Frazer gives us some top tips for summer relief

The warmer months are fast approaching and it’s always a wonderful time to enjoy our horses. If you compete, the season is in full swing during the summer months so you and your horse will be working hard.

Perhaps taking gentle hacks is how you enjoy time with your horse - it’s the perfect time of the year for that too. However, there are a number of special considerations that should be made during the summer months to help our horses stay in the best health and condition possible. The hot months of the year are often the ones we enjoy most, but they can present challenges for horses that are

important for all diligent and loving horse owners to keep in mind.

WATER/ HYDRATION

On average, horses drink between 19 and 40 litres of water per day. When temperatures rise, horses will often drink as much as around 55 litres a day. If they’re in work, they can drink even more. Therefore, it is very important that your horse has access to water at all times during the summer months. If you’re travelling your horse a long distance, it’s important to take frequent stops and offer them water to avoid dehydration.

Signs of dehydration can include trembling,

weakness, fatigue, stiffness and signs of pain. Dehydration can also cause colic so it’s definitely something you want to avoid.

If you’re unsure if your horse is hydrated enough, you can use the ‘pinch test’ to check their hydration. Pinch the skin near the point of the shoulder. If your horse is hydrated, it will snap back quickly. It it take longer than 2 seconds to return to normal, that is an indication of hydration. If it takes longer than 4 seconds to return to position, your whorse is severely dehydrated and you should consider contacting your vet.

If you believe your horse is dehydrated,

Aviform Mare-ish has been formulated to ensure that you get the best from your mare at all times of the year, not just when they aren’t in season!

or if your horse is doing significant work and sweating a lot, you may want to consider providing electrolytes. Electrolytes are necessary for a wide range of body functions including fluid regulation, digestion and neurological functioning. The are lost in sweat and in hot weather, horses can sweat up to 15 litres per hour. Those electrolytes need to be replenished. You can buy specifically balanced electrolyte products to horses, to add to their water and help them rehydrate. Alternatively, you can add regular table salt to your your horse’s diet daily during the summer months, which will be sufficient if your horse is in light - medium work. Salt should be added at a rate of approximately

50g per day.

SUN BURN

Sun burn doesn’t pose significant risk to all horses, but it’s important to be mindful of for horse owner’s. Horses with pink skin, and white colouring on their bodies and faces are particularly susceptible. Even if a horse has dark skin and a dark coat, if they have a white blaze or other white face markings, they have a high risk of sunburn in those areas. A horse with pink skin can experience sunburn anywhere on their bodies but it is most likely on their face, rump and shoulder areas.

The best way to prevent sunburn is to apply a high SPF sunscreen. You may

want to consider a fly mask or a fly sheet on as well as they usually provide UV protection. When your horse is turned out, if possible, ensure there is shade available, where they can get out of the hot sun in the middle of the day.

If your horse does get burnt, one of the best ways to manage it is to apply aloe vera gel. Then, be sure to apply sunscreen over the top of that so that the burnt area is protected from additional UV exposure. Your horse will be uncomfortable and probably in pain if they get sunburnt so be mindful of the area being sensitive. As it starts to heal, it will likely become itchy so you may notice them rubbing the area.

FLIES AND BUGS

Flies and other bugs, especially midges are rife in the summer months and can cause serious problems for your horse. If your horse has an allergy to the saliva of midges, this will cause them to develop sweet itch. Sweet itch causes extreme itching, leading to rubbing, irritation and a of course the discomfort of the itch itself. There are a number of things you can do to help with sweet itch. Ensure your horse is well covered with a full sweet itch rug, including a hood. This will help to prevent the midges from getting to them and biting them. If your horse does develop a flare up of sweet itch, consider a soothing calamine and/or oatmeal wash for them. This will help to settle the irritation.

Even if your horse doesn’t suffer from sweet itch,

there is a great deal of irritation to contend with from flies and other bugs during the summer months. It is sensible to follow a similar protocol in terms of a light mesh rug to protect against flies. Aside from causing irritation, fly bites can cause and disease, so it’s best to actively try to prevent that. Fly masks are also very useful if your horse doesn’t need a full hood.

Consider using a gentle bug repellant spray on your horse during the warmer months to keep the pests away. It’s also useful to add garlic to their diet as it makes horse’s unappealing to flies and other bugs and will reduce the risk of them being bitten or bothered by these bugs.

FATIGUE/ STAMINA

When the weather heats up, your horse will be fatigued much more quickly and their stamina will be lower than in the cooler months. It is important to adjust their exercise routine accordingly and ensure they are not working too hard for the conditions. Horses can experience heat stroke or tying up if exercised for too long in the heat.

Consider working your horse in the early morning or later in the evening, so that’s it doesn’t take so much out of them or lead them to experience heat stress. It is advisable to avoid exercising your horse between 10am and 3pm in particular. It can help your horse to adjust to the warmer months if you build up their fitness during the Spring. This will ensure they are better able to cope when the Summer months hit. When working your horse in the Summer, also consider taking regular breaks, allowing plenty of time for a cool down at a walk and keeping canter work to a minimum, particularly if you’re riding in the hottest part of the day.

Hot weather can pose a risk to horses and there are important considerations to make to ensure that they thrive through the Summer months. Hydration and appropriate adjustments to your horse’s workload will be the most important and continuous factors to manage. Keeping the heat and humidity and how they can effect your horse front of mind during Summer will help to prevent major issues and keep your horse comfortable.

Soaked Feeds for Summer

Allen & Page pioneered soaked feeds and offer a range of tasty, versatile feeds to suit every horse, whatever their nutritional requirements.

Nutritionist, Joanna Palmer looks at the many benefits of feeding your horse a soaked feed this summer.

Soaked feeds for hydration

Keeping horses hydrated is key to health and performance as water is required for every process in the horse’s body, especially temperature regulation and recovery. A horse’s natural diet of fresh grass has a high moisture content, often around 85%. When compared to haylagewith a moisture content of 60%, hay at just 20% and a typical concentrate

feed with 13% moisture, it is easy to see that the water content of many horses’ diets can be significantly less than they require. Although a horse may naturally drink more water to compensate for their drier forage and feed, some horses do not drink as much as they need to maintain peak performance. Feeding a soaked feed is an excellent way of quickly and easily boosting a horse’s water intake.

Soaked feeds for digestive health

Water is essential for gut health and if there is not enough water in the digestive system the horse is at greater risk of developing digestive issues such as choke and impaction colic, where food does not pass normally through the gut. The additional water content of a soaked feed makes it easier to chew, swallow and digest. Using Fast Fibre as a partial hay replacer for veterans with poor teeth or as an additional fibre source for any horse or pony will boost moisture and fibre intakes, supporting a healthy gut environment.

Soaked feeds for performance

Long days spent training, competing and travelling over long distances, often in hot summer temperatures, will increase the risk of a horse becoming dehydrated. This can have serious effects on health and performance. We have all been in situations where we offer water to a thirsty horse, but they show no interest – quite literally ‘you can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make it drink’! However, offer your horse a bucket of their

For more information on our range of soaked feeds visit: www.allenandpage.com or call our friendly, award-winning nutrition helpline on 01362 822 902

normal soaked feed and they will usually tuck in happily. A soaked feed made ‘soupy’ with more water than feed is an ideal way of getting extra water into your horse to aid rehydration and recovery.

Allen & Page’s extensive range of soaked feeds all contain a balance of essential vitamins and mineral, so when fed at the recommended amount for your horse’s size and workload you can be certain he is receiving a balanced diet. With feeds available from low energy to high energy there is a soaked feed to suit every workload and calorie requirement. As a medium energy soaked feed, Muscle & Focus is ideal for active performance horses, helping to support muscle development and recovery. Higher energy feeds including Calm & Condition and Soothe & Gain are ideal for hard working horses and those that need to gain weight. Soothe & Gain is also ideal for horses prone to Equine Gastric Ulcer Syndrome (EGUS). These feeds will not cause heated behaviour as they are high in fibre and oil, which provides stamina giving energy to fuel exercise and help maintain an ideal body condition.

During training and competition always add salt to your horse’s diet to replace losses during exercise. Salt has the additional benefit of stimulating the thirst reflex. For horses sweating every time you ride, add an electrolyte supplement daily to support recovery.

Arenas

WHERE HORSES & RIDERS SHINE

In the realm of horse riding and competitions, the arena serves as a stage where horse and rider unite, showcasing their skills, grace, and teamwork. English equestrianism has a rich history, and its arenas play a vital role in facilitating training, practice, and exhilarating competitions. So, put on your riding boots, grab your reins, and let’s explore the fascinating world of equestrian arenas.

Arenas are purpose-built spaces designed specifically for horse riding and training. Arenas can be outside or enclosed and consist of a level, welldrained surface, ensuring optimal footing for both horse and rider. The surface materials can vary, ranging from traditional options like sand or gravel to more advanced choices such as synthetic fibres or rubber mixtures.

Equestrian arenas serve as

controlled environment where riders can fine-tune their techniques and improve their performance. The even surface and well-defined boundaries allow riders to focus on precision and accuracy in their movements, helping them develop a strong connection with their horses. Equestrian arenas come alive during competitions, offering a thrilling spectacle for both riders and spectators. Showcasing the pinnacle of horsemanship and athleticism, equestrian competitions attract riders from all corners of the world, vying for victory and recognition.

Dressage riders often utilise the arena to practice intricate movements, such as lateral work, transitions, and extensions. The arena’s clear dimensions and

letters at specific points assist riders in executing precise patterns and figures, while mirrors strategically placed around the arena provide immediate visual feedback for riders to improve their position and aids as well as the horses shape and way of going.

Show jumping riders, on the other hand, rely on the arena to practice their jumping skills. The spacious layout of the arena allows for the setup of various jumps, including oxers, verticals, and combinations in most if not all-weather conditions. Riders can simulate challenging courses, work on their approach, and perfect their jumping technique, all within the safety and controlled environment of the arena.

ARENA SPACE FOR ALL

Horse enthusiasts may long to have their own arena at home so let’s take a look at the exciting world of equestrian arena builds. You can create an amazing space where horses and riders truly shine, showing off their skills, grace, and incredible teamwork.

Picture this: you and your horse, working your tails off in the equestrian arena. It’s a magical place where dreams become reality. Equestrian arenas serve as the ultimate training grounds for riders of all skill levels the arena is where you fine-tune your moves and elevate your performance.

When it comes to building an equestrian arena, there are a few key factors to consider. First up, the surface material. You’ve got options like good old sand, gravel, or synthetic fibres or rubber mixtures. It all depends on what kind of riding you plan to do and the footing you desire for your majestic steeds.

ARENA DESIGN

The design of your arena also takes into consideration factors like drainage, lighting. Proper drainage is essential to maintain a dry and safe surface, preventing water build-up and ensuring optimal footing. Adequate lighting allows for training and competitions to take place during evening hours, extending the usability of the arena. What about size? The dimensions of an equestrian arena vary depending on the intended use. Dressage arenas are typically smaller, measuring around 20 meters by 40 meters, while show jumping arenas tend to be larger, stretching to 40 meters by 60 meters or even more. These dimensions provide ample space for riders to perform their awe-inspiring moves while keeping their trusty four-legged companions safe and sound.

FENCING

Fencing plays a crucial role in defining the boundaries of the arena and providing a safe enclosure for the activities within. The type of fencing chosen should be sturdy, secure, and capable of withstanding impact and pressure. Wooden post-and-rail fences are a popular choice for arenas as they are visually appealing, easy to construct, and provide good visibility for both riders and spectators. The rails should be properly spaced and securely attached to the posts to prevent any potential hazards. It is advisable to opt for thick, robust rails to ensure maximum strength and stability. Additionally, incorporating a top rail or electric wire can help deter horses from leaning or attempting to jump over the fence.

Safety should be of paramount importance when constructing

an arena, and this extends to the fencing. Here are some essential safety considerations to keep in mind:

SMOOTH SURFACES: The wood used

LIGHTING YOUR ARENA

Arena lighting is as important as choosing the right surface. The lighting required will depend upon the level of use and activity taking place. You may need to check if planning permission is required.

When choosing the best lighting, think about positioning, height, colour of light and brightness. Mounting height will often determine the lumen output required – brighter is not always better because it can lead to creating glare and we recommend 4000-5000K colour temperature to achieve the best results. It is a good idea to obtain a lighting design to establish the most appropriate product and positioning.

for fencing should be sanded and finished to eliminate any sharp edges or splinters that could potentially harm horses or riders. Regular maintenance, such as sanding and refinishing, is necessary to prevent the development of rough surfaces over time. Selecting the right wood type for arena fencing is vital to ensure its longevity and performance. Different wood species possess varying characteristics such as density, strength, and resistance to weathering. Cedar, redwood, and oak are commonly used for fencing due to their durability and natural resistance to decay and insect infestation. These woods also exhibit minimal warping and shrinking, making them suitable for withstanding the elements over time. It is crucial to avoid woods that are prone to rotting or have high maintenance requirements, as they can compromise the safety and longevity of the arena.

HEIGHT AND CLEARANCE: The height of the fence should be appropriate for the activities conducted in the arena. For jumping disciplines, a taller fence may be required to contain the horses effectively. Adequate clearance should also be provided above the fence to accommodate the height of the horses and prevent injuries during jumps.

GOOD VISIBILITY: is crucial for both riders and spectators. The fencing design should prioritize visibility, allowing riders to easily assess their surroundings and react accordingly. This can be achieved by

ensuring proper spacing between rails and avoiding any visual obstructions.

Regular maintenance is essential to ensure the longevity and safety of the arena fencing. Wood should be inspected regularly for signs of decay, insect damage, or structural issues. Any damaged or weakened sections should be promptly repaired or replaced to maintain the integrity of the enclosure.

Last but not least whilst you’re making some important decisions about your equine arena, don’t forget to daydream about how your dreams are becoming a reality and very soon you and your horse will have hours of fun utilising your very own arena!

If you already have an arena in place but feel that time is beginning to get the better of it, then fear not, you may not need and brand new installation, many companies across the country now offer an arena refurbishment service, where they will come out and assess areas of fatigue, this may be the drainage, fencing or the surface itself, it is always worth talking to a professional if you are seeking to refurbish your arena as if got wrong, this could become an expensive mistake. If you are planning a new build arena, again it is imperative that you engage with a proper firm for this, they will give you advise on location of the build, planning regulations and any restrictions on specific materials used. It is also likely that you will need to engage with your local planning authority for approval of your planned construction

MAKING LIGHT WORK OF CLEARING UP

Every smallholding and private paddock are different, but clearing up after horses, donkeys, or ponies is something we all have in common. Created out of necessity, the SCH Equestrian Powered Brush (EPB) is for customers requesting something – anything – to make this perpetual and relentless task quicker and easier. Over the past 36 years, SCH has created and refined many equestrian machines, but none more valuable than the EPB, allowing you to spend longer with the horses and less time clearing up.

The regular removal of droppings promotes healthy grass and reduces dropping-related diseases. Four rows of height-adjustable brushes rotate at variable speeds to flick the droppings into the plastic rot-proof rear collecting box. A reliable 5.5Hp Honda engine drives four rows of heightadjustable brushes. The machine’s speed-reduction gearbox incorporates a centrifugal clutch which allows the brushes to stop revolving when the engine speed is low - a necessary feature when moving from heap to heap.

To use the EPB, tow it over the droppings, and the powered brush will pick them cleanly off the ground and throw them into the rear collection box. Emptying couldn’t be easier –turn the winch to lift and tilt the collecting box effortlessly.

The task of dropping removal never ends, and the EPB can potentially save hundreds of hours of labour per year. The durable chassis is constructed from solid welded steel, and the Honda-built engine offers maximum reliability. When combined with SCH’s dedicated spare parts team, the robust British-made machinery will save you time and labour costs for many years to come.
