Veliko drastičnih posegov v predmet nismo zasledili.

V digitalno animacijo smo zajeli devet skrinj.

Chest from the vicinity of Radovljica

Dimensions: 156 x 53 x 67 cm

In 2018, a long-abandoned old building dating from the time of the Illyrian Provinces, a people’s school on Mirka Roglja Street, was demolished in Jesenice. During the demolition, workers who were constructing the sewerage occasionally stored tools in a chest that stood in the open without protection, exposed to mechanical damage, environmental pollution, water, unsuitable light, temperature and relative humidity. In short, all the possible factors that cause irreversible physical, biological and chemical changes in the structure of an object, which consequently also changes the appearance of the object.

The chest is included in the exhibition as a practical example of the state on arrival at the museum. It is missing a leg, a slat on right-hand side of the cover, and slats that surround the painting on the side. It is very dirty, dusty, full of cobwebs, animal faeces, waxes and paint stains. In the past, they had cut out the rectangular, painted part of the wood on the front, in the central field and both side painted fields. The resulting ventilation openings had been covered with a dense iron woven mesh that was attached to the chest with nails. The chest had been used as a cage for small animals, probably rabbits.

We did not find many drastic interventions in the object. Most chests have mechanical damage in addition to dirt and the remains of other impurities. Many are maintenance repairs, such as the replacement of pins, worn boards, slats, additional fixings with nails, changing the order of partitions inside chests, and more. Most maintainers paid no attention to the aesthetic appearance of the chest, they focused only on the functionality of the object, so some really ingenious solutions are sometimes seen. On the other hand, there are also some examples that show a desire for aesthetic change. This is evidenced by repainting that we have either removed in our museum or preserved/restored the original painting or, for the sake of historical documentation to the extent that we preserved part of the original and part of the repainting.

Gorenjska Museum holds 174 items of painted furniture. One hundred and seventeen exhibits from the Ethnology Department have been conserved or restored, of which 69 are items of painted furniture. In the exhibition, we wanted to provide a virtual presentation of some phases of the conservation and restoration processes, with some highlighted details. Nine chests were captured in digital animation.
