However, skills shortages remain an issue in the industry. We hear from Ireland’s Construction Industry Federation of a need to entice more women into the sector. That would certainly help, and is helping. Indeed, new figures reveal that one in four of the construction jobs added in 2021 in Ireland went to women and the total number of women in the industry has reached its highest point since records began. On another front, HSENI has launched a campaign reminding the construction industry about the importance of using suitable access equipment, working platforms and edge protection when working at height. Sadly since 2020, falls have killed nine workers carrying out construction work at height in Northern Ireland. On a brighter note: it’s show time again! The Royal Ulster Agricultural Society will be holding its 153rd Balmoral Show in May and it once again has attracted some of our leading players in the plant and machinery sectors. In June, we welcome the return of Hillhead which is celebrating 40 years of the iconic quarrying, construction, and recycling exhibition, and there’s the return this year of Vertikal Days, a firm favourite for those in the access and ‘working at height’ industry. Well, that’s it for now, but in the meantime, you can keep up to date with all the industry news 24/7 by logging on to our website at www.plantandcivilengineer.com Of course, you should also be getting our weekly newsletter which is emailed out every Tuesday; if not, do subscribe on our website so you don’t miss out. Infrastructure Minister Mallon cuts sod on the new Belfast Transport Hub Infrastructure Minister Nichola Mallon has cut the sod on the new Belfast Transport Hub, marking the start of the main works. The construction contract was awarded after a competitive tender process. The enabling works were delivered by GRAHAM, the railway system works will be delivered by Babcock and the main works will now be taken forward by a Joint Venture of local construction company Farrans and global group Sacyr. The project will deliver a modern, world-class integrated transport hub to enhance local and international connectivity with bus, coach and rail links across Northern Ireland and beyond. The facility will also include cycle and taxi provision, delivering enhanced connectivity and comfort encouraging sustainable active travel for a healthier city. Marking the start of the main works on site, Minister Mallon said: “This marks a ground-breaking step in the history of public transport for Belfast and for Northern Ireland as a whole. The construction of the Belfast Transport Hub, a key NI Executive flagship project, will significantly enhance the provision of public transport and active travel, drive economic development and play a major part in tacking the climate emergency. “When completed in 2025 it will be the largest integrated transport facility on the island of Ireland and will help Belfast and Northern Ireland to grow as a modern, competitive, and confident region. “I welcome the many, social, environmental and economic benefits this project, alongside the wider Weavers Cross regeneration project, will bring. As a major boost to the construction and engineering sectors in the north, with the generation of over 500 jobs and around £2.5million for social value through community partnerships, it will deliver immediate and longterm benefits for the entire region.

Minister Nichola Mallon is pictured with Translink Group Chief Executive Chris Conway, Darrell McGuckian, Operations Director, Farrans and Alejandro Mendoza Monfort, Operations Director UK Sacyr.

“I look forward to the completion of this project which will deliver so many benefits for generations to come.”

“Translink is delighted to see this project continuing to progress on schedule and we look forward to completion in 2025.”

Step Change

Construction Milestone

Chris Conway, Translink Group Chief Executive, outlined project expectations once it is completed: “This exciting new fully integrated transport hub will represent a step change for public transport. As a fully multi-modal transport facility it will improve connectivity for everyone in Northern Ireland and beyond and act as a highly impressive gateway.

Darrell McGuckian, operations director for Farrans Sacyr JV, said: “The sod cutting marks an important construction milestone on this significant project. We are pleased to meet with Minister Mallon and provide her with a tour of the Belfast Transport Hub site, as well as an update on our progress to date.

“It will deliver a high-class customer experience including retail options and enhanced cross border connectivity for up to 20million passenger journeys annually. With the added benefits of active travel options, it will also play a major part in tacking the climate emergency, reduce congestion for better air quality, leading to a healthier, smarter and more sustainable city for everyone.

“Since the contract award, our team has been collaborating closely with Translink and utilising our joint office space to truly come together as one team. We have started engaging with local community groups, charities, businesses and schools to keep all stakeholders informed along the project journey and maximise the positive lasting legacy that comes with the development of the Transport Hub.”

VOLVO TRUCKS REVEALS THE TECHNOLOGY IN ITS NEW HEAVY-DUTY ELECTRIC TRUCKS Volvo Trucks is fully prepared to catalyze a rapid shift to more sustainable transportation, and a major upswing in electrification of construction vehicles and heavy road transport, with its recently launched Volvo FH, FM and FMX Electric vehicles. Plant & Civil Engineer’s Phil Eaglestone recently travelled to the west coast of Sweden to get more familiar with the range. He managed to spend some time behind the wheel of several models, travelling around the seaport city of Gothenburg and was suitably impressed with both performance and handling. Breakthrough technology based on shared platforms makes them highly suitable for a wide range of hauling assignments, enabling many transport companies to embark on their own electrification journey more easily. With the sales start of three new all-electric trucks – the FH, FM and FMX – Volvo Trucks can now offer customers a total range of six electrified truck models. The production of the

new trucks will initially start with tractors in the second half of 2022, followed by rigids in the beginning of 2023. The new heavy-duty trucks for the regional haul and construction segments have a gross combination weight (GCW) of up to 44 tons and come in two alternative chassis heights, with wheelbases from 3800 to 6700 mm and a variety of two, three or four axle configurations. “Built on the same highlysuccessful platform as their diesel or gas-powered counterparts, our new electric trucks provide great flexibility and the ability to meet a very wide variety of transport needs,” comments Jonas Odermalm, Vice President of Electromobility Product Management at Volvo Trucks.

THREE MOTORS Three electric motors are coupled with Volvo Trucks’ well-proven I-Shift gearbox which has a unique new gear shifting strategy optimized for electric operations. CONTINUES ON NEXT PAGE

Together, the motors and I-Shift gearbox form a powerful electric drive unit that offers unprecedented, high-efficiency drivability – with a combined electric motor power of 490 kW (666 hp) and a gearbox torque of up to 28,000 Nm. “Because the truck always starts in the highest possible gear, energy efficiency and savings are achieved, thanks to minimized gear shifting. At the same time lower gears are of course available for steep roads or in starting situations that require additional torque and control,” Jonas Odermalm explains. For power take-off, PTO, capability there are three options to meet the customer’s needs: one electric (40 kW), one electromechanical (70 kW) and one gearbox mounted (150 kW).

The high energy density traction batteries use the latest generation of lithiumion cell technology and will be assembled in a Volvo production plant. An electric truck with six battery packs has a nominal capacity of 540 kWh, allowing a range of up to 300 km*.

SMOOTH TRANSITION

VOLVO TRUCKS’ ELECTRIC VEHICLE OFFERING FOR EUROPE

FLEXIBLE AND FAST CHARGING

“For hauliers, it’s important that the transition to electric trucks can be done gradually and in a smooth and easy way. They will have a mixed fleet with different drivelines for many years to come and they can continue to use systems like Dynafleet as well as the same service provider for all their Volvo trucks. The driveline may differ, but the rest is very similar, making the move to electric

The trucks offer two ways of charging: AC charging up to 43 kW, which is ideal for overnight charging, or a much faster DC charging of up to 250 kW. This is very useful when driving two shifts or if you need to charge the vehicle during a lunch break, to add additional range. With a 250 kW DC-charger it is possible to charge up to 80

In addition to the electric trucks, Volvo Trucks also offers a complete ecosystem of service, maintenance and financing solutions that are made specifically for hauliers to support their easier and faster transition to electrified transport.

• Volvo FH Electric, for regional and intercity transport. • Volvo FM Electric, a versatile truck for heavy local transports and regional distribution. • Volvo FMX Electric, for cleaner and quieter construction transport. • Volvo FE Electric, for local and city distribution, waste transport. • Volvo FL Electric, for local and city distribution.

Great customer service earns two winners the 2021 Epiroc Dealer of the Year Award 2021 was not a typical year, and to continue the theme, Epiroc has named not one but two of its dealers as their 2021 Dealer of the Year, Belfast based WAC McCandless and Coyle Equipment Services Ltd in North London. Epiroc appointed WAC McCandless (Engineers) Ltd as the authorised dealer for its hydraulic attachment tools across the island of Ireland in 2019, having successfully grown Epiroc’s share of the market for hydraulic breakers and other excavator attachments in Ireland. WAC have a reputation for combining customer focus with product knowledge and expertise and hold stock across

the range of attachments which has resulted in them continuing to grow the sales of Epiroc equipment in Ireland.

Coyle Equipment Services were appointed as the authorised dealer for Epiroc’s hydraulic attachment tools across

north London, Hertfordshire, Buckinghamshire and the West Midlands at the end of 2019. During 2021 they have more than doubled sales across their territory. Keith Lambourne, Epiroc’s Sales Manager for the UK & Ireland said: “Despite the areas they serve being very different in nature, CES and WAC share some very important values and approaches to their business such as their commitment to local stock holding and prompt service. “Through a combination of onsite repair services for all attachments, a well-equipped workshop, stock of working tools and spare parts, and teams of fully trained technicians both CES and WAC are well placed to deliver the service and aftermarket support that keeps their customers working and productive at all times. It was impossible to choose one winner from the two companies, so we decided both were worthy winners.”

Topcon Positioning Ireland goes electric Topcon Positioning Ireland has made a huge step towards a more sustainable future by welcoming 12 new fully electric Volkswagen ID.4s. The positioning equipment manufacturer makes the move as part of its continued commitment to sustainability, replacing 100% of its company car fleet with the zero-emission electric vehicles. Data from Volkswagen has shown that Topcon Positioning Ireland will save approximately 98 metric tonnes of CO2 by updating its old fleet of diesel vehicles to new electric ones, saving approximately the same weight of CO2 as more than 16 adult African Elephants Mark Fagan, business director at Topcon Positioning Ireland, said: “We’re delighted to have made the move to electric vehicles within the Ireland team. As a manufacturer, we are always asking our customers to embrace new technologies and innovations and, at Topcon, we’re leading by example with the decision to replace 100% of our company car fleet and embrace electric vehicles. “Our commitment to sustainability is an integral part of our business practice and, from manufacturing processes to the way we conduct business on a daily basis, we’re always striving to make a positive and meaningful change in terms of our impact on the environment. “Sustainability and environmental responsibility have been at the top of the agenda for a number of years, and the updates from COP26 last year placed even more of a focus on how the construction industry can make a real difference in striving towards net-zero. This decision to transition all of our car fleet to electric

is important, and one we hope to see emulated across the industry as we come together to reduce the environmental impact of the sector as a whole.” The ID.4 vehicles are the first in Europe to receive a TUV Nord carbon-neutral certificate, meaning they were manufactured as carbon neutral vehicles, offset with initiatives such as recycling and planting trees. Volkswagen is the first manufacturer to achieve this certificate. Michael Neill, fleet sales manager at Volkswagen Financial Services Ireland Limited, said: “It’s brilliant to work with progressive companies like Topcon Positioning Ireland, sharing our passion for a more sustainable future. The all-electric ID.4 is produced and delivered with a carbonneutral balance – during production, we

rely on energy efficiency and the use of green electricity, avoiding emissions wherever possible through every stage of the vehicles’ manufacture. That, coupled with the instant move away from fossil fuel powered vehicles, means Topcon is making instant CO2 savings thanks to this switch.” Topcon Positioning Ireland is committed to reducing CO2, both within its own organisation and across the wider industry. Further to investing in its own fleet of vehicles, the solutions and technologies that Topcon provides enables businesses to work more efficiently and productively, and helping to minimise machinery use, and therefore fuel consumption, and reduce material waste. Construction Will Need More Women to Meet Future Needs, Says CIF Ireland’s construction industry will need to entice more women into the sector to meet its future needs, the Construction Industry Federation (CIF) has warned.

1,000 workers per month, the CIF believes that the industry will need to make further inroads into improving the ratio of female employees in the industry.

The CIF made their remarks as new figures revealed that one in four of the construction jobs added in 2021 went to women and the total number of women in the industry has reached its highest point since records began.

The analysis was presented during the CIF’s recent International Women’s Day Event held in Clontarf Castle. Among those to participate in conference were women at various stages of their careers, representing a variety of aspects of the industry.

According to the latest figures available from the Central Statistics Office, on a seasonally adjusted basis the number of women employed in Irish construction reached 14,400 in Q4 2021. This represents 9.1% of the total construction workforce in the country. It is also the highest proportionate level since the CSO started tracking construction employment in 1994. The figures also showed that total construction employment grew by 23,200 over the course of 2021, rising from 135,200 in Q4 2020 to 158,400 in Q4 2021. During that same period the level of female employment in the sector grew from 8,500 to 14,400 – an increase of 5,900. This jump represents 25.4% of the total increase in the Irish construction workforce gained during 2021. With the construction sector continuing to expand and requiring an additional

These included Tara Flynn, President of the Master Builders’ and Contractors’ Association (MBCA) and Director with Paul Flynn Construction; Joanne Cluxton, Group HR Manager of Mercury Engineering; Lorraine Brady, Pre-Construction Director with BAM Ireland; Phil Kane, Country Manager with Eaton; Sinead Savage, Association Director of Manning Construction Group; Kate Rooney, Mechanical Engineer with Designer Group as well as Ireland’s first female crane driver Kate Fahey of BKRN Construction. Speaking at the event, CIF Director General Tom Parlon said, “Our industry needs more women – from the building site to the boardroom. It is positive to see that there was a significant increase in the number of women working in Irish construction last year, but our sector will need to build on that momentum. That means addressing any barriers that are

preventing women from viewing construction as a viable career pathway in 2022. “Clearly that also involves breaking any biases that remain in the Irish construction sector. There are so many women who are doing this on that on a daily basis. This ranges from high ranking directors in some of Ireland’s premier construction companies, to those who are beginning their careers. Every day these women are showing how much of a contribution they make to Irish construction and highlighting why we need to bring more women into the industry. “Thankfully the construction sector is growing and growing fast. With a major demand for more workers we have to be exploring all avenues for attracting additional talent. Women account for approximately half of the overall labour force in this country, but still less than one in ten of the people working in our sector is female. “ We have to address this gap and it is up to everyone in the industry to do what they can to help encourage more women to consider a career in construction. Growth goes beyond numbers, it also has to include expanding our outlook and appeal. I hope to see further progress made on all of these counts this year and over the coming years.”

Mallon visits A6 Dungiven to Drumahoe scheme to mark significant progress to traffic, and when the A6 Dungiven to Drumahoe section is completed this year, approximately three quarters of the Belfast to Derry route will be of dual carriageway standard or better.

Infrastructure Minister, Nichola Mallon recently visited the £220 million Flagship A6 Dungiven to Drumahoe Dualling Scheme to mark what she says is ‘the significant progress made on this strategic project.’

“As well as improving the standard of carriageway along the A6, both schemes also provide enhanced provision for public transport, pedestrians and cyclists. New park and rides sites are now operational at Drumderg (Toome) and Drumahoe, with a further park and ride site currently under construction at Claudy.

The scheme will provide 25.5 kilometres of high standard dual carriageway between Drumahoe and Dungiven, including a bypass of Dungiven with new roundabouts connecting the scheme to the existing road network at either end. Minister Mallon said: “The A6 is a strategically important route as it connects the North West to Belfast and beyond so I am delighted to confirm that huge progress that has been made on this vital scheme. The existing road carries around 15,000 vehicles per day and with traffic levels continuing to grow, the very significant investment of £220million from my Department will help to address regional imbalance,

structures along the scheme substantially complete. The pavement construction is also progressing well with more than 30% of the surface course already laid along the main carriageway. “Last year the £189 million A6 Randalstown to Castledawson dual carriageway was opened

“My officials and the contractor have worked hard to minimise any inconvenience for the public and I want to thank them for all their efforts. I look forward to the completion of this scheme as it will significantly enhance the connectivity of the north-west, improve journey time reliability, reduce journey times and crucially improve road safety.”

incorporates more powerful and efficient Stage V engines in all new series models. The 13-18-tonne models feature N45, the 4.5-litre engines from the renowned NEF series, while the N67, from the same engine family, powers the 21-30-tonne models providing 6.7-litre displacement. Describing the beating heart of the new E-Series, Galano highlights the FPT engines’ extensive new features: “CASE has introduced a solution free from exhaust gas recirculation (EGR), ensuring greater efficiency during the fuel combustion. When coupled with selective catalytic reduction (SCR) on filter, the E-Series delivers unprecedented total cost of ownership (TCO) improvements.” The new e-Series is equipped with HI-eSCR2, the patented after-treatment solution by FPT that is completely maintenance free and built for-life. There is no requirement for mechanical cleaning or replacement over the life cycle.

CASE has also improved the service experience by doubling the maintenance intervals up to 1,000 hours for engine oil, fuel filters and oil filters.

ALTERNATIVE FUELS The new FPT Stage V engines are designed to offer flexible fuelling solutions for customers, particularly those operating in jurisdictions with demanding local regulations. All E-Series models can run on regular or alternative fuels, such as increasingly popular HVO (hydrogenated vegetable oils). Building a revolutionary operator experience with extra comfort and safety In addition to the new work modes, the E-Series provides operators with increased levels of comfort and visibility. The cab has many new features that will enhance the overall operating experience. Improved access, a brand-new industry-leading 10-inch LCD monitor with 5 configurable buttons, new control layout, suspended pilot

IPAF launches targeted safety campaign adequate in terms of reach, articulation, and load-bearing capacity. Machine knowledge includes whether personal fall protection equipment (PFPE) should be used and, if so, what type to use, and how to attach it.

A campaign emphasising the importance of working safely to avoid falls from the platform when using Mobile Elevating Work Platforms (MEWPs) to enable temporary work at height has been launched by the International Powered Access Federation (IPAF) at its annual Summit in London.

• Clip on – If personal PFPE is required, all occupants of the platform must attach their lanyard to the correct anchor point. Ensure movement within the platform is possible while attached, and do not move the machine or elevate the platform until and unless all occupants are attached.

IPAF’s Don’t Fall For It! safety campaign outlines the possible underlying causes of falls from the platform when using MEWPs, which almost always lead to serious injury or death. It offers operators and managers key advice to mitigate the most common risks and avoid accidents of this type, as identified in IPAF’s ongoing incident reporting and analysis via the www.ipafaccidentreporting.org portal. Peter Douglas, CEO & MD of IPAF, comments: “MEWPs are designed to safely conduct temporary work at height in just about every environment, but every year the most common type of accident we see reported are falls from the platform, which as you can imagine nearly always lead to serious injury or death if they occur while using machines at height. “We are determined that our new Don’t Fall For It! targeted global safety campaign will help to instil safe working practices and remind operators and managers of some fairly basic positive steps they can take to reduce the risk of such incidents occurring. The messaging is really simple – select the correct machine for the job, don’t take risks, don’t cut corners, and wear the correct personal fall protection equipment in boom-type platforms.” Brian Parker, IPAF’s Head of Safety & Technical, says: “Operators can help avoid this type of accident by focusing on the principles we’ve set out as part of this campaign. If they are properly trained and familiarised on the MEWPs being used, then hopefully none of this guidance should be new, but we know that complacency breeds contempt,

and that too often corners are being cut or fundamental principles of safe use ignored. “With this safety campaign, IPAF is saying that, if you find yourself tempted to do something different to what you know is the right and proper way to work, or if you are ever asked to do something that you think just isn’t safe by a work colleague or supervisor, then ‘don’t fall for it!’ Far better to think twice and save a life – whether it is a workmate’s or your own!” Key points of guidance in the IPAF Don’t Fall For It! global safety campaign include: • Plan thoroughly – conduct a proper MEWP site survey/assessment, select the correct machine for the work and use professionally trained operator(s) and supervisor(s). • Know your machine – operators should be trained on the machine type they are using and familiarised on the specific model. Operators should assess that the machine is suitable for the task and conditions, and

• Set up and manoeuvre the machine/ platform effectively – occupants should never need to over-reach, unfasten PFPE, step or climb on guardrails or otherwise extend the safe working envelope of the platform. Ensure vertical MEWPs are positioned and repositioned as necessary to allow easy access to the area of work to be undertaken; operators should not overreach or stand on guardrails to access a work area instead of taking the time and effort to correctly reposition the machine. • Stay inside the platform/attached – the guardrails of the platform form the primary fall prevention and define the operational envelope of the machine being used. Always stay inside the platform. Where there is a requirement for PFPE, you must wear it. Do not exit the platform at height; unclip/exit only on completion of work when safely lowered to the ground. IPAF offers further guidance on using MEWPs that provides more detail on specific risks and advises on safe operating procedures. New Construction Industry Report Reveals Main Barrier to Achieving Net Zero A new report, ‘Sustainable by design’, by engineering consultancy Patrick Parsons, based on research with 100 senior executives of UK construction firms, reveals that despite the majority (85%)believing the industry is doing enough to reach net zero by 2050, there are significant barriers to achieving this target. Over two thirds (68%) of respondents said that improvements to building material supply chains to reduce carbon would be critical to achieving net

18

zero, followed by 63% who said that existing planning regulations need to change to support the sector if it is to hit this target. Using alternative materials which have a lower carbon footprint is also a significant barrier to overcome for 62% of those questioned, followed by decarbonising existing buildings (59%) and the ability to collect data to measure carbon in buildings (48%). When asked about the impact of the focus on climate change because of COP26, 86% said that

they believe it will accelerate positive advances in sustainability in the sector during 2022. Commenting on the findings of the report, Conor Murphy, Senior Partner, Structural Engineering At Patrick Parsons said: “The UK construction industry is committed to reaching net zero by 2050 and is confident that this target will be met. However, this ambition is not without its challenges in terms of the materials used, the need for planning rules to change and the ability to decarbonise

legacy buildings to improve their performance. Greater use of sustainable design and engineering in the planning of new developments, will support the pathway to net zero.” Patrick Parsons focusses on helping clients assess, design, and overcome the most complex of engineering challenges across a range of sectors. Operating from four sites – its HQ in Birmingham, London, Wakefield and Ashvale - the business provides a range of connected engineering services including Structural, Civil and Geo-Environmental consulting engineering services, competences the firm has developed over many years, and for which it has built a strong reputation. The Ambassador was given a guided tour of Tribe Tech’s manufacturing facility as part of his visit to Northern Ireland.

Australia’s Ambassador to Ireland, Hon. Gary Gray, with Tribe Tech’s Managing Director Charlie King outside the company’s production facility in Mallusk.

Tribe Technology Welcomes Australian Ambassador to Mallusk Headquarters The Australian Ambassador to Ireland has made a special visit to innovative automation focused mining equipment maker Tribe Tech in Belfast to hear about the growth of the company in Northern Ireland and Western Australia. The Hon. Gary Gray, who is a former Minister for Resources and Energy in Australia and has extensive experience in the mining and minerals industry, met with Tribe Tech’s leadership team and workforce at its headquarters on Enterprise Way. Based in Mallusk, and Perth, Australia, Tribe Tech is led by a team of mechanical, electrical and mechatronic engineers and has developed the world’s first completely autonomous Reverse Circulation (RC) drill rig,

which is designed to improve safety and increase efficiency in the mining sector, with a focus initially on iron ore. The first RC drill rigs in production have already attracted an impressive multi-milliondollar order book, with data showing that the automated rig is 100 times safer and 70% more productive than conventional RC drilling rigs. Managing Director Charlie King, who worked in Australia for more than a decade, said it was a fantastic endorsement to have the Ambassador make the trip up from Dublin. “I would like to thank the Australian government, and Gary in particular, for their ongoing support for what we’re building

here at Tribe Technology. It was great to be able to show him the progress we’ve made in ramping up production. We’ve built a fantastic team in both Belfast and Perth in Australia and we’re looking forward to expanding into more global mining jurisdictions in future,” he said. Ambassador Gray said: “It’s great to be at Tribe Tech. This is a company that is building safety, it’s building efficiency and it’s building capacity into an activity which has been difficult within the mining industry across the world. Safe practices in drilling are at the heart of the best practices in mining and in exploration. The skill base that’s here in Ireland, the enthusiasm and the talent to build a global business in global

supply chains is just magnificent. It’s wonderful to be here.” Tribe Tech moved the company’s headquarters to Mallusk in 2021 in part due to the availability of its highly skilled workforce, Northern Ireland’s strong track record in the manufacturing sector and economies of scale compared to more expensive locations. Plans are in place to grow the workforce to over 120 people in the next four years. Fiona McCartan, Supply Chain Manager at Tribe Tech said: “It is clear from Gary’s visit today that the excitement Tribe Tech is generating reaches far beyond Northern Ireland. We are providing fantastic opportunities for employment and, giving local businesses a chance to be involved in one of Northern Ireland’s most innovative projects and boosting the local economy. “This is why internationally our business is gaining so much traction from world-leading drilling and mining companies. It’s an exciting time for everyone involved and we are so thankful for the Ambassador’s support.”

NEBOSH and HSE to tackle one of the main causes of musculoskeletal disorders NEBOSH and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), have partnered to develop a new qualification aimed at preventing one of the main causes of musculoskeletal disorders: manual handling. Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) accounted for 8.9 million lost working days in Great Britain in 2019/20 with manual handling estimated to be the main cause. 0.5 million workers suffered from a work-related musculoskeletal disorder in 2020/21, with a cost to organisations and to the UK economy. This is a global problem; the World Health Organization estimates 1.71 billion people experience musculoskeletal conditions

worldwide, three in five workers in Europe report MSD complaints, more than half of US adults experience an MSD and it’s estimated that they cost countries between 0.5-2% of Gross National Product. The new NEBOSH HSE Certificate in Manual Handling Risk Assessment is a one-day qualification which is based on the Health and Safety Executive’s best practice guidance and tools. It focuses on practical solutions to help recognise, assess, and manage manual handling risks. On completion of the course, learners will be required to undertake a manual handling risk assessment, based on a selection of video case studies, to put their new knowledge to the test.

Matt Powell-Howard, NEBOSH Head of Product Development, says: “Many organisations jump straight to providing training on manual handling – how to lift etcetera. In developing this qualification we’re encouraging organisations to take a step back and take the time to effectively risk assess their manual handling activities. By doing so they may be able to eliminate or reduce an activity and, if manual handling is required, then they’ll have all the information they need to protect their workers.” The NEBOSH HSE Certificate in Manual Handling Risk Assessment is available to study via NEBOSH’s global network of Learning Partners. demolition

DOOSAN COMPLETES DEMOLITION & MATERIAL HANDLER LINES On all the Doosan demolition excavators, standard safety features include a FOGS cabin guard, safety valves for the boom, intermediate boom and arm cylinders and a stability warning system.

With the arrival of the new DX380DM-7 model, Doosan has completed the company’s range of new High Reach Demolition Excavators. The DX380DM-7 has joined the existing DX235DM-5 and DX530DM-5 demolition models launched in the last two years. These are complemented by the company’s new range of Material Handler models and together both ranges cover the majority of applications in the demolition, waste and recycling industry. The new Material Handler range now offers three models - the wheeled DX230WMH-5 and DX250WMH-5 and the tracked DX225MH-5 model. In all of Doosan’s demolition excavators, the operator is housed in a high visibility, tiltable cab, providing an excellent environment particularly suited to high reach demolition applications, with a 30 degree tilting angle. All three machines in the High Reach range provide increased flexibility with a modular boom design and hydraulic lock mechanism. This innovative design facilitates an easy change between a demolition boom and an earthmoving boom to accomplish different types of work on the same project, using the same machine. The multi-boom design also allows the earthmoving boom to be mounted in two different ways, which with the demolition boom, provides further flexibility with a total of three different configurations for the same base machine.

20

MATERIAL HANDLERS

A special stand is provided to facilitate the boom changing operation, which is based on quick-change hydraulic and mechanical coupler connections. A cylinder-based system is used to push the locking pins into place to help complete the procedure. All three models share a hydraulically adjustable undercarriage, which extends to a maximum width to provide optimum stability when working on demolition sites. The width of the undercarriage can be retracted hydraulically to a narrow width position, for transporting the machines. The adjusting mechanism is based on a permanently lubricated, internal cylinder design which minimises resistance during the movement and helps to prevent damage to the components.

Doosan is now also offering a choice of three different material handler models. The 23 tonne DX230WMH-5 and DX250WMH-5 25 tonne wheeled machines are based on Doosan’s popular DX210W-5 wheeled excavator. The new DX225MH-5 25 tonne crawler model is based on Doosan’s successful DX225LC-5 22 tonne excavator the crawler type undercarriage is particularly suited for work in difficult ground conditions. All three models have been designed specifically for a wide range of material sorting and handling applications such as those in the scrap metal and other solid waste and recycling industries, as well as demolition, forestry and logging. Designed to carry out the toughest tasks, they are built with front and rear stabilizers, and a boom and arm specifically designed for material handling tasks. A standard feature is the hydraulic cab riser, which gives the operator better all-around visibility of the attachment and work area. When combined with the rearview camera display in the cab, the operator has excellent visibility of the job site.

Berco: New Service Line for construction bulldozers Berco, a global leader in the manufacturing and supply of undercarriages and components to OEMs, has launched its new Aftermarket Service Line range especially for bulldozers in the construction sector with engine power between 60 kW and 200 kW.

In particular, for 100 kW and 170 kW bulldozer applications – the most widelyused in the construction industry – the chains in the Service Line range have an exclusive, patented link profile design which reduces weight between 6 and 7%, without compromising their wear resistance or structural strength.

With this new entry, Berco completes its Service Line range designed for the sector, which already includes products for 13, 20 and 30-tonne excavators, introduced at the end of 2020.

Production of the Service Line range reflects the high standards of quality in every product from Berco, satisfying customers who are seeking a low TCO to become more competitive – a vital determining factor given that 30% of machinery maintenance costs in the construction sector are attributable to the undercarriage.

The construction sector is an increasingly strategic market for Berco, especially since relative expenditure in the industry is forecast to grow by 80% by 2030, driven by a growing world population. This is the context in which the company is playing an increasingly important role in both OE and the Aftermarket, thanks to products which combine high standards of engineering, production and quality control processes along with the financial advantages of low TCO. The Service Line range that Berco is offering for bulldozers includes rollers and lubricated chains designed to cope with intensive use; both products in which the company has extensive expertise.

Every product in the Service Line range provides a lengthy warranty period (up to 2,500 hours under normal operating conditions, in certain geographical regions such as Europe and the Americas), and is highly resistant to abrasion, impact and humidity. Diego Buffoni, Head of Aftermarket at Berco, confirms this point: “I am extremely pleased to see the launch of this new line for bulldozers. It will provide Berco and its dealers with very satisfactory results in terms of new business opportunities, adding to those gained with the launch

of our Service Line for excavators. In fact, in the last fiscal year, this contributed to a significant increase in our Aftermarket sales in the construction sector. It demonstrates just how well the Service Line is meeting market demands.” Products from the Service Line range for bulldozers can already be ordered from Berco dealers through the company’s newly launched B2B e-commerce platform: a tool providing advanced product search capabilities and faster order entry. The completion of its Service Line range for the construction sector is a further step forward for Berco in presenting itself as the ‘solution provider’ to its dealers, offering them an increasingly complete product range that will see, in the second half of 2022, the addition of even more new product groups beyond the undercarriage range.

Terex MPS Handles a Large-Scale Relocation Project in Malaysia Mount Trusmadi, located in the Trusmadi Forest Reserve, in Sabah, Malaysia, standing at over 2,500 metres above sea level, is the new job site for a Terex MPS crusher along with other Terex equipment. A recent project for one of its customers involved relocating Terex equipment to this location from over 150km away. The requirement from the customer was that the equipment be moved to this site that needed it post-pandemic. This equipment had been unused for upwards of 2 years. The equipment was the Wheeled Jaw WJ1175, this contained the Primary Jaw Crusher Model Terex JW42, and a Terex Wheeled Cone Model WC1000 containing a Terex TC1000 model Cone Crusher. The machines were relocated successfully, and with ease. The flexibility which is offered with Terex MPS Wheeled Plants was the key factor by which the customer could reuse almost all components from the previous site. This included reusing the 5x14’ IV Decks which were easily attached to the wheeled units in transit. “The versatility of our Wheeled Plant was the main reason that the customer chose Terex originally,” said Benjamin Tong, Regional Sales Manager for Terex MPS. “The IV Decks screen makes it easy for the customer to cope with the market demand for four different aggregate sizes,” he added. The service support provided by the Terex MPS team was also highly appreciated by the customer, which resulted in a quick turnaround of the plant and in turn production. Now sitting at the top of a new site some 150km from the old site, overlooking the beauty and majesty of Mount Trusmadi, the Terex MPS systems are working together as one, once again, after years of sitting idly by.

RFID detection system ZoneSafe uses Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology to create detection zones around vehicles and mobile plant. Vehicle-mounted antennas detect RFID tags which can be worn by workers, or placed on objects or property. When a ZoneSafe tag enters a detection zone, the vehicle operator receives a visual and audible alert. A vibrating tag also warns the detected worker of an approaching vehicle. ZoneSafe RFID technology does not require line-of-sight and tags will be detected regardless of obstructions, blind spots, adverse weather or poor visibility.

The one-of-a-kind optimisation of the machines, along with their premium quality components has saved the customer time, labour costs and overall relocation costs during a time when the market is at its most challenging.

adjust it to the most suitable position for his body structure.

Take the latest eyecatching heavy duty 42 tonne Hidromek HMK 390LCHD, for example.

The cab is supported by 6 silicon viscose mounts that dampen the effects of noise, shock and vibrations regardless of working conditions of the machine. There’s plenty of storage space, too, for the operator’s bits

It is certainly a big step up in comparison to the earlier 370LC model in the Hidromek range, featuring as it does much smoother and sharper lines and a brand new upgraded, restyled cab that offers an excellent working environment for the operator. This latest generation model also benefits from a relocated switchboard, remodelled travel pedals and levers, high capacity air-conditioning and high-resolution LED backlight colour LCD display. Other features enhancing the operator’s comfort is the versatile and fully adjustable seat designed to enable the operator to work without stress and fatigue for longer hours. The joystick console and seat can move independently so the operator can easily

Opera Control System, an easy to use interface that facilitates communication between the operator and the machine. The operator can easily switch between menus in Opera, change settings, such as hydraulic flow, and check the status of the machine, including pressure, temperature and engine load. The information and warnings on the instrument panel are always easy to see and control, thanks to the positioning of the Opera interface. Other features of the system include automatic powerboost switch-on switch-off, automatic electric power-off and automatic powershift to improve performance – and it also enjoys excellent visibility from the cab, thanks to side and rear cameras, along with the increase in the number of LED headlights, which also significantly improves night vision. Safety is further enhanced with an automatic starting horn, swing warning system and travel warning system.

EXCELLENT BUILD QUALITY, RELIABILITY AND EXCEPTIONAL FUEL ECONOMY CONTINUES ON NEXT PAGE

HMK 230LC Meanwhile, the smaller HMK 230 LC crawler excavator at just over 23 tonnes features all the same high quality components, smooth hydraulics and strong build and offers equally outstanding performance by working faster, more productively and more efficiently. As with all models in the H4 Series, an automatic stop system through configurable idling and stopping times provides fuel saving by stopping the engine after the machine is on idle. The automatic stop system helps to keep operational costs to minimum, and, of course, contributes to saving the environment. Another notable feature is the “safe fuel transfer pump” which stops the pump automatically when the tank is full; this feature gets activated also when the pump does not transfer fuel for 30 seconds, and ensures that the pump stops automatically. The HMK 230LC also has an 8 inch touch control panel which is positioned ergonomically at a point that the operator can easily control the machine’s features. The touch control panel which includes an integrated music system allows the operator to adjust the flow required for the attachment without leaving the cab and save this information for 20 different attachments. It also gives access to information on the average and instant fuel consumption, as well as information on status such as atmospheric pressure, turbo boost pressure, fuel pressure and hydraulic pump pressure. As with the HMK 390LCHD, it is equipped with the Opera Control System enabling the operator to use the machine easily, and feel comfortable and relaxed as if he was in an office environment.

HMK 102B SUPRA The system is also featured in the HMK 102B SUPRA backhoe loader, powered by a Perkins diesel engine, one of the most economical and durable in its class. The turbocharged engine maintains high torque even at low rpms, while the 6-forward 3-reverse fully automatic transmission used in the SUPRA Series allows smooth driving. In conventional backhoe loader cabs, while the operator is controlling the machine in the loading and excavation position, he has to turn his head by 90° to the right and left side in order to check the gauges, but in the SUPRA he can easily check these on the LCD screen while he is sitting in the loading and excavation position, without taking his eyes off the driving direction. This working position allows operator to work for longer

periods without suffering from neck and back aches. In addition, forward-reverse direction control on the front loader control lever allows the operator to make quicker manoeuvres during the loading process; he can apply both loader and forward-reverse commands from a single point without losing steering wheel handling by using the TIPSHIFT button. The machine’s ROPS/FOPS certified cab is designed for space and operator comfort, and comes equipped with an air suspension seat, cool box, and heating and air-conditioning.

mini excavators

MINI EXCAVATORS UNDERGO REVOLUTION IN DESIGN & APPLICATION In recent years, mini-excavators have developed into real Tool Carriers. This is thanks to the application of new technology and improved machine stability due to new designs and a better centre of gravity. As the attachment revolution continues apace, what are some of the new innovations that have come to market in recent years in the excavator attachment space? We’ve been asking Daniele Paciotti, Europe, Middle East and Africa Product Line Director Attachments at Bobcat At Bobcat attachments, we are always working on new solutions to meet the needs of MEX customers. For example, we have recently put more focus on developing our Depth Check and laser system to support the operator in completing trenching works and to make jobs more efficient. As a result, Bobcat is proud to announce the addition of the updated Depth Check System to our portfolio. This system is a solution that uses three sensors placed strategically on the machine to accurately achieve or sustain the desired grade depth, working from the cab. The Depth Check system is fully integrated with the Bobcat panels and display, which offers simple operation and eliminates

the need for an add-on Monitor inside the Cab. This simple, durable kit is wired in, so job conditions or the lack of a wireless signal never interfere with digging accuracy, and also remove the inconvenience of lag time with no batteries to replace. The Bobcat Depth Check System is also compatible with the laser receiver, so the operator can ‘bench’ on a laser signal to create slope, or to sustain a grade in multiple locations on a jobsite, which increases flexibility. Bobcat is also offering new Flail Mower and Plate Compactor attachments for MEX. The flail mower has a number of unique features on the market such as the 12 second drum stop after the power is switched off, no need to drain lines as this is integrated in the attachments, a self-levelling system for following the ground surface as a standard feature and the best balanced motor design in order to cut the grass while travelling.

Bobcat will continue to bring to the market more attachment solutions to make the MiniExcavator even more of a real Tool Carrier.

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE MARKET NEEDS ADDRESSED BY THESE ATTACHMENTS?

WHICH ATTACHMENTS ARE SEEING INCREASED DEMAND IN THE MARKET AT THIS STAGE AND WHY?

Compact Excavator customers want to work efficiently, with the same solutions as those on the bigger excavators and with easy to use solutions.

The commodity attachments are always the most requested like buckets and couplers or Breakers, probably because the construction and demolition industry is growing thanks to government subsidies but we also see growth in Hydraulic Clamps, flail mowers and augers due to growth in cleaning and landscaping work.

THERE HAVE ALSO BEEN MAJOR ADVANCES IN COUPLING TECHNOLOGY. WHAT ARE SOME OF THE DEVELOPMENTS YOU HAVE SEEN IN THIS SPACE? The coupling technology is not moving as fast as machine or attachment technology but is concentrated more and more on safety features, to make the jobsite safer and to avoid any kind of potential accident. One development I see expanding in this area is in hydraulic quick solutions, to reduce spending time in connecting hoses every time you change the attachments and to avoid wasting time getting in and out of the cab.

32

The compaction plate attachment is a great tool to maximize compaction, even where workers cannot go with classic compaction plates, thanks to the great reach of the mini-excavator in all these conditions.

PLANT & CIVIL ENGINEER

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE INNOVATIONS WE ARE LIKELY TO SEE IN THIS AREA IN THE NEXT FEW YEARS? Our Attachments team will follow the Market trends and will create solutions to meet these requirements. I’m sure the biggest innovations will come because of three fundamental things: automation, digitalization and recognition. At Bobcat we are working hard on our Long-Range plan to bring the easiest to use and more integrated solutions to the market. Our aim is to make life for the customer as easy and efficient as possible.

John Deere 8R 410 now available with eAutoPowr The world’s first electric infinitely variable transmission with electromechanical power split is now an option for the top of the range 8R 410 and is available for all three machine forms – 8R wheeled, 8RT and 8RX.This is a significant step in John Deere’s journey towards electrification which has been developed in partnership with Joskin. The entirely new transmission concept, inclusive of an e-port for implements, was awarded a gold medal at AGRITECHNICA2019 by the DLG (the German Agricultural Society). After many years of research and development in the space of electrification, John Deere has now found a highly durable solution offering an infinitely variable transmission in the horsepower class above 400hp. Not only does it have increased durability, but it also positively impacts the overall performance. For the new eAutoPowr, John Deere has completely replaced the hydraulic PLANT & CIVIL

components with an electric power path. The two brushless electric motors are virtually wear-free and powertrain durability exceeds any other concepts previously offered in the industry. Moreover, this simplifies the design of the transmission and allows real time remote technical diagnosis. The electric drive is designed in such a way that it not only supplies the drive, but also provides up to 100kW of electrical power for external implements via 480V variablefrequency three-phase alternating current (AC). A first application has been developed by John Deere together with Joskin. In combination with the Joskin axle drive, two axles of the slurry tanker are driven electrically and thus the weight of the tanker is utilised for traction. This means increased traction, less slippage and precise tracking. The tractor can perform at optimum with less ballast or further increase productivity by having the ability to operate wider implements with the same tractor. With the help of the e-Drive, the electric drive

is activated to prevent any wheel slip from occurring. The slip limit can be set by the driver. This allows the system to support the tractor permanently or only in certain situations, for example, when going uphill. In addition to the technical innovations, driving comfort is not neglected. In the already very quiet driver’s cabin, the noise level is reduced even further. The driver also benefits from the fine speed control and improved acceleration. Since speeds of up to 5 km/h are driven completely electrically, a fast and very smooth transition is possible. Find us on

FROM THE DESK OF: GORDON BEST, REGIONAL DIRECTOR, MPANI

WE ARE ESSENTIAL, REALISE IT, COMMUNICATE IT Gordon Best, MPANI

I am pleased to inform you that we plan to publish our MPANI 2022/23 Journal in June /July of this year and hopefully, if the political position with hopefully a new NI Executive allows to publicly launch the Journal in the Long Gallery Stormont in late summer. Our Journal, and now the new videos we produced, will highlight the service we have delivered over many years and during the COVID Emergency, our achievements and of course the challenges we face as an Association and Industry over the next two years and our objectives beyond. The title for this next Journal is “MPANI 2022/23 – We are Essential, Realise It, Communicate It”. Well, you already know that, but it’s important to remember that at the start of Covid in early 2020, when other businesses and sectors were being forced to close, the NI Executive recognised our own mineral products industry as key and essential to keeping the economy going. So be proud of your business, be proud of your employees and be proud of the role you play in your local community and wider society. As usual our MPANI 2022/23 Journal will be packed with hard-hitting, informative editorials authored by industry leaders, specialists, and high-ranking figures. As in past years this Journal will be the most comprehensive source of information on how the Northern Ireland mineral products industry is viewed by our stakeholders. We will have a leading figure from within Northern Ireland writing a Foreword, we will have comment paragraphs written by leading figures from within local Government, comment from other construction industry representative organisations and views from a number of NGOs that the MPANI partners with. We will again have comment from the Younger Generation of Managers and from Women, who play such an important role across so many parts of our sector, on how they see the future and what we

need to do to attract young people and improve the diversity within our Industry.

power of good will again overcome and win through over evil. We stand with Ukraine!!

Our last journal “MPANI 2020/21” was published at the height of the Covid 19 pandemic and during varying degrees of lock down and yet we still produced, with your input and support, a 140 page edition packed with positive news and contributions. Let’s hope we do even better this time!

PRIORITIES FOR GOVERNMENT

Since the last edition of Plant a lot has happened. We are starting to at last emerge from the constraints of the Covid pandemic, we have been experiencing unprecedented fuel and construction material inflation along with labour and skill shortages, we had no functioning NI Executive and we are now in election mode. Then suddenly the Kremlin launches and invasion of Ukraine throwing Europe and possibly the world into further turmoil and uncertainty. My hope and prayers, and I am sure yours also, is that peace and the

During March MPANI met with our political parties, ahead of the Assembly election, to discuss “Priorities for Government” paper. It is vitally important, as I am sure you will agree, that our Industry’s voice is heard and your interests and right to operate is protected. Another indispensable part of MPANI’s work will be sustaining the relationships we have built over the years with Government, Councils, NGOs and other Construction Industry organisations. Our goal will be to sustain and develop these working relationships going forward so that we not only protect your business, but the whole NI economy and the futures of our valued employees.

essential materials sustainable solutions

On the 10th March MPANI held its AGM in the Dunsilly Hotel, Antrim at which we welcomed our new Chairman, Paul Brogan of the McQuillan Companies. We were also delighted that Paddy Mohan of Mannok accepted the role of Vice Chair. Both bring many years of industry experience and valuable knowledge to these core roles and the Association looks forward to their input and working closely with them in what will undoubtedly be a challenging tenure. Paul’s first task was to commend Simon McDowell for his sterling work as Chair over the past two difficult years. To say the least we were extremely disappointed that the Chancellor, despite concerted efforts by many in the U.K. construction, minerals, waste and manufacturing sectors to change his mind, did not listen to reason and common sense. He went ahead with his cash grab by removing the red diesel rebate. It really raises the question of how committed this Government is to the U.K. energy intensive and most essential Industries. The reality is, that given the Treasury is collecting more money than ever now in VAT, as a result of rising energy and fuel costs, he could have gone much further and supported our sectors! Last month the Public Accounts Committee published yet another report into the Planning System in NI.The Committee found that since the transfer of functions in 2015, planning authorities have failed to deliver on many of their key targets, particularly on major and significant development. The Committee was appalled by the performance statistics. It is simply unacceptable that almost one-fifth of the most important planning applications aren’t processed within three years. Such poor performance has an impact on applicants, developers and communities and is risking investment in Northern Ireland. They also said that, on the basis of the evidence presented to the Committee, it is clear that the system is failing on delivering its key functions - major applications take years to decide, plan and deliver making it incredibly slow, and enforcement is inconsistent. Given such obvious issues, the Committee believes that a significant programme of reform is needed. At the end of May Infrastructure Minister Mallon has announced that she will commence the Review of Old Mineral Permissions (ROMPs) legislation. The Minister said: “I recognise the concerns of those who live near hard rock quarries, that noise, blasting vibrations and other emissions are reduced as far as practicable. I have also listened to the quarrying industry and those who are concerned

have taken place within an internal workshop or building, the Simulated Construction Site will enable a more realistic environment which will prepare individuals for work in the real world of construction.

MPANI welcome this announcement as it will finally level the playing field for our industry, address concerns of neighbours and help operators maximise the potential to deliver on biodiversity and geodiversity enhancement.

This free of charge facility is the ideal training location for trainers and employers to host their own training and inhouse trainers for construction employers. In the future, CITB NI hope to develop the location for site visits and potential job sampling for schools/careers.

We look forward to working with the Department and local councils to ensure the review of environmental conditions attached to old permissions will reward and protect responsible operators.

SIMULATED CONSTRUCTION SITE MPANI and a number of our Concrete Members were delighted to support the new Simulated Construction Site at CITB Nutts Corner. The facility will support reallife training as well as the industry’s needs for a skilled and competent workforce through pre-apprenticeship programmes, apprenticeships, FE / HE construction courses and upskilling of the existing workforce. Work has already commenced on the site, with materials provided by MPANI. The Simulated Construction Site will provide a facility that will encourage the practical application of retrofit applications to enable the NI Construction industry to meet the government targets for carbon neutral buildings. Delivery of practical skills in previous preemployment and apprenticeship schemes

Barry Neilson, Chief Executive CITB NI said: “CITB NI is delighted to announce details of the Simulated Construction Site and we are very grateful to MPANI for their support with facilitating materials for the site. There is a need for real life training on the job, nothing better than hands on experience to combine theory and practical work. With the facility being free of charge to use, it is the perfect location for both training providers and employers. We are looking forward to welcoming our first organisation onto the site later in March and we look forward to watching how the site is developed, progressed and used by the industry.”

CHARITY GOLF DAY Finally, we are now looking forward to our Local Industry Charity Golf Day, in aid of the Alzheimer’s UK and Asthma and Lung UK, on Monday May 30th at the Hilton Templepatrick. If you are interested in registering a fourball, sponsoring a hole or attending the dinner please give me a call on 07876136929 or email gbest@mpani.org

Aggregate Industries Launches UK’s First Ever Commercially Available Biogenic Asphalt As part of its ongoing commitment to decarbonising the construction industry, leading building materials supplier Aggregate Industries has further developed its SuperLow product range with the launch of the UK’s first commercially available biogenic asphalt. SuperLow-Carbon asphalt has been developed in partnership with Shell Bitumen as a pioneering product for more sustainable pavement projects. In an industry first, SuperLowCarbon uses Shell’s Low Carbon Bitumen in a unique formula that utilises improved production processes and alternative energy sources to lower its embodied carbon footprint. It also includes a biogenic material that effectively locks CO2 within the asphalt rather than releasing it back into the atmosphere, which creates a ‘carbon sink’ – something that absorbs and stores more carbon from the atmosphere than it releases. SuperLow-Carbon is manufactured at lower temperatures than standard asphalt, which means it requires lower energy to produce than its hot mix equivalent without compromising on

performance. Production at a lower temperature also reduces nuisance fuming, odour and steam at the project site, which in turn lowers burn risk, improves visibility and provides better working conditions for operatives. In addition, lower asphalt temperatures during production reduces binder ageing and the product remains highly compactable for longer – allowing more time for full compaction, delivering enhanced performance and durability, and ultimately life-expectancy. It also reaches trafficking temperatures much quicker than hot mix products, allowing for earlier reopening of carriageways to the travelling public; resulting in less disruption and reduced build costs. Vicky Smith, Managing Director – Asphalt at Aggregate Industries, said: “As the UK’s leading building materials supplier, we have a responsibility to ensure we play a central role in the transition to net zero. That is why it is crucial to us to never stand still when it comes to the production of innovative and sustainable building solutions.

Unique Solution “We are pleased to have worked with Shell Bitumen to bring the UK’s first commercially available biogenic asphalt UK market. With highways agencies

under ever-greater pressure to deliver a sustainable strategic road network (SRN), SuperLowCarbon offers a unique solution unlike any other on the market. Containing biogenic materials that lock in CO2 – even when recycled - as opposed to realising it back into the atmosphere, SuperLow-Carbon has the potential to change the way we create pavements. “We’re delighted with the result, which is a hardworking, sustainable and low carbon product that does not compromise on quality, performance or durability.” Ana Alvernhe, General Manager, Shell Construction & Road, said: “This innovation is an excellent example of how both new and existing technologies can be combined to deliver a solution which reduces the embodied carbon of materials, a critical lever for decarbonising construction. “Working with customers on technology development is a priority for Shell, and we are proud to have partnered with Aggregate Industries on this solution using our Shell Bitumen CarbonSink. Wide-ranging collaboration across the value chain such as this will be crucial

New Research Highlights Commercial Value of Developments with Sustainable Design A new report, ‘Sustainable by design’, by engineering consultancy Patrick Parsons, based on research with 100 senior executives of UK construction firms, reveals that they are seeing significant commercial benefits from using sustainable design and engineering to build developments with lower carbon footprint and water use, reduce waste and materials used.

PLANT & CIVIL

Vicky Smith, Managing Director Asphalt at Aggregate Industries.

Two thirds (66%) said sustainable design is adding value to current developments and 83% said that projects designed with green credentials have given them a competitive advantage. Furthermore,68% expect the value of developments with sustainable design to increase by between 10% and 20%, and 18% expect values to increase by between 20% and 50% over the next three years,

in accelerating the pathway to a net-zero construction sector.” The launch of SuperLow-Carbon is the latest in a series of steps taken by Aggregate Industries towards the development and use of more sustainable construction materials. In 2020 parent company LafargeHolcim became the first construction company to sign the Net Zero Pledge and since then Aggregate Industries has introduced a host of low-carbon products, including its SuperLow asphalt and ECOPact concrete product ranges.

demonstrating the significant premium placed on sustainable construction. The research also highlighted that the most important aspect of sustainably designed developments is that they can be adapted to meet future environmental and social challenges. Commenting on the findings of the report, Conor Murphy, Senior Partner, Structural Engineering At Patrick Parsons said: “Reducing the impact of our built environment is no longer an option but an imperative, and sustainable design and engineering has a crucial role in protecting the environment and our communities. This is recognised in our report, which shows that sustainable design and engineering gives construction firms a competitive advantage when it comes to securing new projects and increases the value of developments.”

SLEATOR PLANT CONTINUES TO GROW SANY’S MARKET SHARE Sleator Plant are gearing up to have an even bigger presence at this year’s Balmoral Show where they’ll have a wide selection of machines on display, chief among them models from the increasingly popular SANY range. Balmoral has been one of the company’s primary shows in Northern Ireland in recent years and that hasn’t changed, according to General Manager Aaron McCaul. “We believe it is critical that we have a presence at the show;

42

PLANT & CIVIL ENGINEER

potential customers want to get up close to the machines, they want to see just what the machines have to offer. By climbing up into the cab they can begin to appreciate how the machines could work for them,” says Aaron. It’s an approach that certainly works for Sleator Plant, because it brings in more business and helps them to increase market share. “Last year, for example,” says Aaron, “we enjoyed a huge response. On day one at Balmoral we had interested customers from

as far away as Galway on the stand from early morning to see the SANY excavators. “We believe a lot of our sales volumes are off the back of being able to present the machines directly to customers at shows like Balmoral, so we are very happy to be returning this year; it will be good to get in front of people after two years of social distancing because of Covid-19.” Not surprisingly, perhaps, Sleator Plant won the award last year for Best Trade Stand at the Show, and they will be going

all out to impress the judges this time around as well with an ever bigger and better designed and located exhibition area.

EXCELLENT AVAILABILITY Of course, it is all very well having a good display at the show, but what about machine availability at a time when many dealers are struggling to get stock into their yards?

Aaron McCaul, General Manager, Sleator Plant

“We are very fortunate that we have an extensive range of SANY excavators readily available, probably about one and a half million pounds worth of stock, with more SANY machines on the way.” The available models range from the 1.8 tonne SY16 excavator right up to the 23.5 tonne SY215, and adds Aaron: “We are aiming to triple our sales of SANY machines in 2022 compared to last year which will significantly grow our market share.” That will be in reach as the manufacturer is giving Sleator Plant priority when it comes to delivering new machines, supplied direct from SANY’s new hub in Scotland.

POPULAR MODELS “Currently, about two thirds of our SANY stock either in our yard or on order has already been sold. One of the most popular models is the 2.8 tonne SY26. We had six of the machines in stock and they were all sold within a week, so we have another 24 machines being delivered shortly and about half of those are already pre-sold.” Featuring a zero tail swing radius and independent boom swing, it is ideal for working in extremely confined spaces. Its independently developed intelligent control system matches pump output to available engine power for

greater hydraulic system efficiency and lower fuel consumption, while its load sensing hydraulic system offers excellent efficiency and performance. Other popular excavators in the SANY range include the 14 tonne SY135C. Extremely

powerful, it offers outstanding driver comfort. Despite its compact design, it displays impressive versatility and performance, outstanding at digging, crushing, loading and backfilling. Its power allows it

to reach high excavating forces which would otherwise only be possible with significantly bigger machines. Perfect for use in places where space is limited. Meanwhile, the 16 tonne SY155U short-tail-swing excavator is extremely economical to operate thanks to its very high productivity, exceptional driver comfort and low consumption data, while the 23.5 tonne SY215C, features a Cummins engine, strengthened components, high operating efficiency, low fuel consumption, easy maintenance and comfort cab.

STRONG DEMAND So, what’s the big attraction of the SANY brand? “Good availability is obviously one reason, but the main appeal to operators is the strong build quality, reliability and excellent value for money.”

world from operators who may not have considered them in the past; once they see the SANY up close and climb into the cab they begin to appreciate what they are getting for their money. SANY use some of the best components on the market and haven’t taken any short cuts in producing the range. In addition, all the machines, which extend from 1.6 tonne up to 50 tonne, come with very generous 5 year warranties.

Clearly, the Chinese manufactured machines are in big demand in this part of the

Aaron McCaul, General Manager and Brian McCartan, one of four Regional Salesmen.

44

PLANT & CIVIL ENGINEER

“Feedback from operators has been very positive. They like the fact that the SANY machines pack a powerful punch, are robust and reliable, and are highly spec’d with very comfortable cabs.” Selling the machines is one thing, but providing a dependable aftersales service is equally or even more important to the customer, which is why Sleator Plant carry an extensive stock of spare parts. “Presently, across all our product ranges we have about half a million pounds worth of spare parts, so availability will never be an issue, and certainly not where SANY is concerned as they recently

tripled their parts warehouse in Scotland,” says Aaron.

OTHER FRANCHISES Sleator Plant’s other successful franchises include Mecalac, specialising in the manufacturer’s range of backhoe loaders, dumpers and site rollers; Genie access equipment, supplying the North and South of Ireland with access platforms and lifting equipment including material lifts, aerial work platforms and scissor lifts, as well as the larger range of Genie access machines including tracked boom lifts and telescopic boom lifts; and Rokbak (formerly Terex Trucks), supplying the Scotland based manufacturer of the world renowned range of articulated dump trucks.

Merlo Forecasts ‘Busier Year’ Boosted By New Model Arrivals Merlo, the Italian-made range of telehandlers distributed in Ireland by McHale Plant Sales, is experiencing what their general manager, Denis McGrath terms: ‘a ‘busy year gone by and an even busier year to come’. Of particular note is the emergence of a trend that sees sales of Merlo equipment split 50/50 between construction and agri-related deliveries, helped in large measure by increasing demand for Panoramic and Turbofarmer models.

“This balanced position - into which we hope also to expand our position in the industrial processing and warehousing front - is one that we have been working to achieve, helped by improvements and user-focused features introduced across the Merlo range,” McGrath said. Looking ahead, it is expected that Merlo’s market position will be boosted by the introduction of new models, and by on-going specifications enhancements to the existing line-up. New this year is the arrival of an allelectric eWorker which is now available

to order here, both in 2-wheel and 4-wheel drive versions. Also new, and due to launch in Ireland shortly, is the versatile and somewhat unique Merlo Cingo multipurpose tracked transporter. Likely to appeal to the plant hire sector, the diesel-powered Cingo with easy operator ‘step-on/step-off’ convenience - accommodates a broad range of fitments that equip it for use across a multiplicity of applications in construction, agriculture and industry.

European construction equipment industry staged a grand comeback in 2021 The CECE Annual Economic Report shows that the demand for construction equipment in Europe stayed on a growth path in 2021, after the industry had already seen a return to growth in the second half of 2020 when the impact of the pandemic was receding. Demand benefitted from a combination of stable performances by different enduser segments and pandemic stimulus measures, whose potential fully unfolded in 2021. On the other hand, the construction equipment industry also experienced the most severe supply-chain disruptions in recent history, in particular shortages of raw materials and components, as well as scarce and expensive freight transport. “Against this backdrop, the 24% increase in sales in 2021 on the European market is a remarkable outcome. The European construction equipment industry is indeed resilient as shown over the last 2 years. The continued increase in demand in our largest markets, the European recovery programme and the global construction boom are boosting our business. We are doing everything we can to maintain the positive direction in the coming years. This includes the urgent topics of decarbonisation,

digitalisation and the EU regulatory agenda”, said Alexandre Marchetta, CECE President. The figures surely include a statistical “base effect” of yearly comparison, with the enormous drop of the first pandemic lockdown in 2020. However, after weathering the Covid crisis, underlying demand within the industry has remained strong and is on track to close the gap with record sales levels of 2007. Last year saw consistent trends across the equipment sub-sectors with all product segments recording growth in sales of between 22% and 30%. Concrete machinery saw the strongest growth, slightly above the levels seen in the other sectors. From a regional perspective, the markets that were hit hardest in 2020 – particularly the UK and Spain – saw the best performances in 2021. Southern Europe and CEE markets saw above-average growth in sales, and even the mature markets in Northern Europe saw similar levels of recovery. None of the markets saw a fall in sales in 2021, and the only market that experienced singledigit growth was the high-volume German market. The fact that it has still not reached saturation levels can be considered a positive outcome. Turkey continued its recovery from the catastrophic levels of decline

seen in 2018/19 and saw the highest levels of growth across the market regions.

Outlook 2022 The business climate index for the industry recorded its highest ever value in the July 2021 survey and maintained extremely high levels throughout the rest of the year. In the first two months of 2022, there was another small improvement both for the current business situation and future sales expectations. European manufacturers hope that supplyside bottlenecks will create less concerns for the rest of the year. The demand-side clearly remains strong, as all equipment sub-sectors were expecting business to improve in the months leading up to the summer of 2022. In February this year, the CECE Business Barometer, highlighted that more than 50% of manufactures surveyed were experiencing order backlogs of six months or more. All statistics and surveys presented in the current Annual Economic Report have so far indicated that the European construction machinery industry is very well positioned. These expectations are likely to be negatively affected by the current tensions and the effects of the war in Ukraine, which cannot be estimated yet. The CECE Annual Economic Report contains sections on the macro-economic situation, the performance of the construction sector, the main markets, and main segments of the European construction equipment industry. The report also includes information from the national CECE member associations, shedding more light on regional developments in the European construction equipment sector.

Construction Industry Urged to Take Working at Height Seriously HSENI has launched a campaign reminding the construction industry about the importance of using suitable access equipment, working platforms and edge protection when working at height. Sadly since 2020, falls have killed nine workers carrying out construction work at height in Northern Ireland. “It is essential, for those in control of work at height, to make sure work is properly planned supervised and carried out by competent people with the skills, knowledge and experience to do the job. If in doubt seek advice from a competent health and safety professional as to how to carry the work out safely,” says the HSENI. “When planning work at height it is essential to select the most appropriate piece

of work equipment for the activity to be undertaken such as properly erected external scaffolding when building a house, an extension or when having substantial roof or chimney works undertaken. “Always consider internal falls such as those from external scaffold platforms into the building or from openings, roof lights and voids. “Falls from flat roof edges can be prevented by providing temporary edge protection, e.g. double guardrail and toe board around the edge of the roof installed by a trained scaffolder or other suitable proprietary edge protection systems. When erected it should be strong and rigid enough to prevent people from falling. “A competent person also needs to assess the roof to ensure it is not fragile and can hold

the weight of any people and materials to be used by them.”

Best Options A mobile access tower or mobile elevated work platform (MEWP) such as a cherry picker may be the best options for shorter duration work and where the work activity can be carried out from within the platform such as maintenance and cleaning. When working at height: - Plan early for the provision of scaffold, edge protection or other work equipment; - Ensure scaffold is erected and modified by competent scaffolders at appropriate stages and inspections are carried out before being used for the first time, after any event likely to have affected strength and stability and at regular intervals not exceeding 7 days;

- Ensure internal falls are considered and appropriate collective measures are provided such as staging, birdcage scaffolding or proprietary decking systems; - Consider light-wells and roof lights and ensure these are protected; - Take precautions when working on or near fragile surfaces; - Provide protection from falling objects; - Ensure the selection of the most appropriate MEWP, check it has a current Thorough Examination report and the operator has received appropriate MEWP training. fuel management

AGGREKO COMMITS TO MANDATORY GREENER FUELS SWITCH Aggreko has further confirmed its commitment to reaching net zero emissions by beginning the transition from diesel to greener fuel sources in its fuel management services.

despite this shift to a ‘prove it’ culture when it comes to decarbonisation, complacency and greenwashing sadly still remains at a time when organisations need to begin taking steps toward a greener future.

The organisation’s ongoing phaseout is part of its pledge to cut the amount of the fossil fuel used by the organisation by 50% before 2030 and reduce local air quality emissions from its fleet by a similar figure. Specifically, Aggreko intends to phase out offering diesel with its fuel management services from April, instead solely providing hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO).

“It is for this reason why we have put great effort into developing efficient and sustainable technologies that can replace existing, polluting energy sources without disruption. This continued investment has allowed us to begin the transition from diesel to HVO for our fuel management systems, passing decarbonisation gains onto our customers while maintaining or improving equipment performance.”

The move is part of the global temporary equipment supplier’s ‘Greener Upgrades’ initiative, which also includes a multi-millionpound investment in new products and technologies, alongside alternative fuels. Speaking on the switch, Chris Rason, Managing Director Aggreko Northern Europe, said: “The need to be sustainable has long shifted from a vague preference to an absolute priority for all businesses, and this sentiment continues to be reinforced through action. “For example, at COP26, proposals have been floated to force UK firms how they will reach net zero targets set for 2050. However,

50

PLANT & CIVIL ENGINEER

Aggreko has previously trialled HVO as a ‘drop-in’ fuel in controlled conditions using its own generator fleet – a rarity in testing conditions – and demonstrated significant emissions benefits. Further scientific studies have also shown the fuel produces up to 90% less greenhouse emissions, including 33% lower levels of fine particulates compared to diesel. Alongside this, 30% less hydrocarbons and up to 9% fewer nitrogen oxides are produced, and the amount of polycylic aromatic hydrocarbons produced was also reduced. “It cannot be doubted that the transition to net zero will be difficult for all organisations,

John Anderson.

regardless of their place in the supply chain, and there is no ‘one-size-fits-all’ solution,” Chris concludes. “However, this does not mean that businesses can stand still – far from it, in fact. “By identifying areas in which pragmatic choices may be made for quick and effective sustainability gains, organisations can reduce the size of the challenge ahead. Opting for greener fuels is an excellent example of this, which is yet another reason why we have made this choice to transition our fuel management services onto HVO.”

Civil Engineering Contractors’ Association Calls for Action on Carbon Emissions The CECA, which represents many of Ireland’s largest and most established Civil Engineering firms, is united in its call for the industry and its clients to take decisive and collective action now, to limit carbon emissions and reduce their impact on climate change. CECA President and Managing Director of Murphy Ireland, John G Murphy said: “While much work has been done by companies individually to shift towards more sustainable and environmentally friendly work practices - and the majority of our sector’s work makes the world around us more sustainable and connected through the upgrading and improving infrastructure - we cannot escape the fact that the construction

process and the materials used throughout contribute heavily to carbon emissions. “The CECA believe that true change in this area can only be achieved if we make a concerted and collective effort to move away from C02 heavy practices and materials, with the support of clients and designers, making more enlightened, greener choices with sustainability in mind from design to delivery.” CIF Director of Main Contracting, Paul Sheridan said: “There is a wealth of knowledge, experience and expertise within the CECA that can assist public policy to make this shift toward greener, more environmentally friendly solutions, making the industry more efficient and effective. We welcome any

opportunity to further engage with Government in this regard. “The CECA will be a key supporting partner in the Government’s Climate Action Plan. The CECA support the National Development Plan and recognise the importance of the Government’s National Investment Framework for Investment in Ireland, in choosing the right type of infrastructure based on sound criteria. CECA members are working to align their supply chain to the EPA Public Green Procurement Guidelines to reduce embodied carbon. They are also fully supportive of the circular economy and creating the necessary infrastructure to reduce, reuse and recycle construction waste.”

While the Civil Engineering sector acknowledges that it must play an active role in the reduction of carbon emissions emanating from construction works, the sector is unique in that the life cycle emissions of many civils projects (i.e., greenways, cycleways, water, and public transport infrastructure) provide long-term and sustainable benefits to society. CECA members regularly encounter carbon emission saving opportunities on sites, but rigid adherence to specifications, programmes, and immediate costs make decisions very difficult. It is past time that the minimisation of carbon emissions is equally prioritised in these decisions.

engcon launches the EC-Oil automatic quick hitch for 4-6 ton excavators engcon is launching its EC-Oil quick hitch system on the lower quick hitch on the tiltrotator EC206 for excavators in the 4-6 ton weight class. This means that hydraulics, electronics, and central lubrication are connected automatically while the driver remains in the cab, increasing both efficiency and safety.

our customers and end users, says Martin Engström, product manager at engcon.

of, for example, slope mowers or other tools that require slightly higher oil flows.

The lower quick hitch of the S40 also gets several extra hydraulic outlets as well as a smart function with the possibility to connect a detachable gripping cassette. It is now planned for Sweeper rollers and other tools.

Since the beginning of the 90s, engcon has been manufacturing tiltrotators, a flexible wrist for excavators available in sizes 1.5-33 tons that makes it possible to dig in several different directions and make simple tool changes. Being able to tilt and rotate the bucket on an excavator means that the work is simplified, increasing efficiency by up to 25 percent.

“Detachable gripper cassette means that the driver can easily and quickly disconnect the gripper when it is not needed. It is a weight saving of about 35 kg and if you count how many times you lift the bucket in a day, it quickly results in a fuel saving and reduced wear on the machine,” Martin Engström continues.

Martin Engström says that with the new swivel it also has the advantages of not having any hoses in the lower quick hitch. “It will be the same concept as the larger models where the EC-Oil blocks and extra sockets are screwed into the bracket. On the S40, the locking cylinder is also screwed directly into the block, and this means that the bracket has no hoses or moving parts that rub and cause wear. We know how crowded it can be to screw inside a tool holder, so this is a big step forward in terms of service friendliness.”

In recent years, engcon has further developed the EC-Oil quick hitch system, it can connect hydraulic tools automatically, without the driver having to step out of the cab to make a manual connection of the hydraulic couplings. In 2020, engcon introduced EC-Oil automatic oil and electrical coupling as standard on the machine hitch S40 and on the upper part of an EC206 tiltrotator for machines up to 6 tons. Now engcon is taking a step further and introducing an EC-Oil automatic quick hitch system also on the lower quick hitch. It is both convenient and saves valuable work time for operators by not having to step out of the cab to connect with manual, pressurised and dirty hydraulic couplings, contributing to improved efficiency and safety for our end users.

Higher oil flow engcon has also chosen to equip the EC206 with a completely new swivel with increased capacity and more outputs for extra hydraulics on the quick hitch S40 under the EC206.

Additional features mentioned on the new EC206 are that it is now possible to equip it with both tilt and rotation sensors for the machines that have machine control systems.

In addition to this, there is an extra socket on each side of the quick hitch and an extra socket on the back of the bracket. Extra sockets on the side of the quick hitch bracket are also possible, feeding directly from the excavator’s extra hydraulic socket. This then enables a higher oil flow than the outlets that are controlled via the tiltrotator’s valves and enables operation

“After we introduced EC-Oil as a standard for our tiltrotator systems, sales have significantly increased, which indicates that the combination is appreciated by

As well as making sure you are compliant with the law, keeping up with maintenance schedules gives owners the opportunity to be alerted to any mechanical issues early on so they can be addressed. This ensures that the truck stays in good working order and gives you reassurance that your operators are using safe, suitable equipment.”

Geoff Martin, CFTS Chairman, explains: “Very recently the courts fined a motor vehicle scrap company £60,000 after a worker was run over and crushed by a forklift. The HSE investigation found that the truck had not been adequately maintained, had no working foot PLANT & CIVIL

Carlile-Stanton, JLG’s Industrial Channel & Distribution Manager for the UK and Ireland. “We believe a distributor is the right way to go in the North. To deliver machinery there from our European production facilities, it no longer makes sense to come through the UK – particularly for reactive orders, such as Friday night calls for equipment required on the following Monday morning. “Demand for equipment is high, but the expectations from manufacturers during the early part of the pandemic was that it would be lower. So now everyone is chasing product, and we are learning lessons from the pandemic about how best to support our customers.” In the Republic of Ireland, the company will continue to sell its products direct, with a team led by UK-based Brad Abrahams with Simon Harper in support. “This new approach offers a chance for us to regenerate the market,” adds Glyn. “McCandless have a strong service-led ethos, providing total care for their customers, and offering a stable platform for JLG. We’re looking forward to working with them.”

PREMIUM RANGE Gerald Carvill, Operations Director of WAC McCandless commented: “WAC McCandless are delighted to be announcing the addition of the JLG Access Equipment range to our product portfolio which is well known

CRUMLIN PLANT SALES OFFERING LATEST AMMANN ROLLERS & COMPACTORS Ammann’s new series of light tandem rollers, available from County Armagh based all-Ireland dealers Crumlin Plant Sales, are easy to operate, transport and maintain. The rollers retain their ability to work in-line or off-set, enabling compaction against curbs and other obstructions – and delivering productivity in more open spaces. The new double drum rollers are the ARX 12-2, ARX 16-2 and ARX 20-2. Also introduced was a combination version, the ARX 16-2C, which utilises a steel drum in front and pneumatic tyres in the rear for higher machine traction and improved sealing of surfaces. The rollers are powered by Kubota engines that meet EU Stage V and U.S. EPA Tier 4f emissions standards. A new vibratory circuit setting delivers expanded vibratory frequencies that facilitate quicker compaction. “The new setting enables vibratory frequencies to increase (3% at low frequency / 6% at high frequency),” said Vlastimil Medek, Global Product Strategy at Ammann. “Improved impact spacing also optimises compaction quality.” Controls are logically located and intuitive. Switches for lights and vibration have been repositioned for optimal access. A new armrest with updated layout and integrated functions, including the parking brake, helps even unseasoned operators succeed. “ARX dashboards and controls are consistent with other Ammann models,

60

making it easy for crew members to switch between machines,” said Medek. “This is particularly important for the rental market and when dealing with inexperienced operators.”

a representative from the Dealership. The modes can now be changed easily.

A new, orange safety belt aids in monitoring whether crew members are properly secured. A redesigned ROPS lock protects operators and reduces noise. A large handle makes it easier to access the machine.

Soft drive enables smooth, steady adjustments to directional changes – particularly important when working on asphalt. Hard drive responds quickly to directional changes. Panic stop idles the machine if the operator makes very sudden directional changes or significantly adjusts the travel lever position.

Another key improvement is effortless switching between drive modes. In previous generations, such action required a service technician or perhaps

Front and rear rubber buffers, which protect lights and scrapers, have been thickened and widened and moved to a central location. Lights are set in the machine

frame for added protection, and directional and working lights have been centralised. The articulation joint lock has been redesigned and repositioned for better protection. Transporting the machine has never been easier – and safer. Vibration is automatically disabled when in “loading” or “transport” mode. A higher central lifting point is easier to access. Expanded lashing points simplify securing the machines.

The variable adjustment range makes it possible for the plates to cover wide working areas. The range also allows operators to adjust to sensitive paving or soil compaction jobs. In particularly demanding ground conditions, the plates can also be switched to on-the-spot vibration, where the machines essentially hover in place to compact thoroughly.

Draining points have been relocated to external locations, preventing spills and reducing maintenance time by 75%. The battery disconnect switch is at the main base of the engine for convenient access. Like the previous generation of Ammann ARX Light Tandem Rollers, the machines can operate with offset or in-line drum configurations. Off-set requires operators watch only one drum, knowing the second will be a safe distance from an obstruction. This results in cohesive compaction up to the barrier. The in-line setting, which enables equal distribution of compaction forces, is preferred on more open jobsites.

VIBRATORY PLATE COMPACTORS Also available from Crumlin Plant Sales are Ammann’s APR Reversible Vibratory Plate Compactors which deliver on the most demanding jobsites. The machines

are ideally suited for compaction work in both soil and asphalt. The plates can handle sensitive jobs, thanks to their exacting control, and also perform well in open spaces. Hydrostatic controls make the plates manoeuvrable, accurate and fatigue-free to operate. Twin-shaft exciters take on any challenge. What exactly makes Ammann hydrostatic controls stand out? Operators explain that it’s the difference between a runof-the-mill implement and a tool that is precisely and perfectly suited for a job.

Twin-shaft exciters in the vibratory plates operate efficiently and propel the machines over steep and uneven terrain. The exciter force is directed into the ground and into the materials to be compacted – and away from the operator. Ammann APR Plates are equipped for every situation, in part due to their varied sizes – from the 100-kg light model with a working width of 30 cm to the 440-kg machine with a working width of up to 75 cm. The plates compact soil and gravel, and that’s only the start. A water tank makes them the machines of choice on asphalt, while an LED display helps the operator to easily identify the current degree of the material’s compaction. This prevents over- or under-compaction and work is carried out more quickly and efficiently.

SMART AND STRONG

Tough jobsites require power, and Ammann compactors and light equipment have plenty. They perform on tough grades – and maximise productivity under less challenging conditions, too. The machines aren’t just strong. They’re smart, too. • Ammann rollers offer an Intelligent Compaction system that eliminates unnecessary passes – and the costs associated with them. • Ammann light equipment features a patented system that enables precise machine control while protecting the operator from unwanted vibration. All that technology – and more – is incorporated intuitively, meaning operators of all experience levels can benefit from the built-in advantages.

World’s First 100 Tonne Truck Up For Sale On Ritchie Bros Marketplace This is also where buyers will be able to ‘Make an Offer’ for the machine, a process that will be managed by the Ritchie Bros team, which includes Territory Manager Laura Roberts who added: “This really is a very special listing for us at Ritchie Bros and just like any piece of equipment the Scammell Truck has undergone a rigorous inspection by one of our specialist inspectors.

The World’s first 100 tonne truck, an iconic Scammell model built in the UK in 1927, is being sold on a ‘Make and Offer’ basis on the Ritchie Bros Marketplace by the late owner’s son Dean Hudson. The truck, which bares the Hudson name, is the only fully working model in existence. It’s a piece of automotive history that was originally used to transport steam trains, huge boilers, heavy girders and much more. Commenting on its sale, Dean said: “I grew up helping my father hand paint, polish and restore the Scammell, which is fondly known as ‘Leaping Lena’ because it used to jump when pulling heavy loads up steep slopes. “Since she returned to our family in 2018, after being displayed in the British Commercial

Vehicle Museum in Leyland, Lancashire for 30 years, we have restored her to the tip-top working condition buyers will see today. And I can safely say that she is a pleasure to drive.” The new owner will need two helpers to operate’ Leaping Lena’,

as it takes three people to crank the truck into action. You can witness Dean and his colleagues performing the starting process in a video accompanying a full inspection, detailed history and condition report on the Ritchie Bros Marketplace.

“Every detail of the inspection, including pictures and videos, is covered by our guarantee, so buyers know that the truck’s condition will be exactly as listed.” To make an offer for ‘Leaping Lena’ and give this classic Scammell 100 tonne truck a new home, visit www.eu.ironplanet. com and search for 1927 or email one of the Ritchie Bros team on eucustomercare@ritchiebros.com

Construction fatalities up almost 10% in 5 years, data shows what went wrong, what was irrelevant and what more could have been done previously is vital to minimise future accidents at work.

Fatal incidents in UK construction have risen by almost 10% in the last five years. There are now 1.62 deaths per 100,000 workers, which is four times the figure for all industries.

“If a company reports an accident at work amongst one of its workers, depending on the severity of the accident and cause, they should carry out a thorough risk assessment for the returning person/people to ensure they’re capable of doing the tasks they’re assigned which won’t aggravate their recovery. This should also include manual handling and Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) assessments.

It is also double the rate for the transportation and storage sector (0.85) and around 2.5x the rate in manufacturing. Falling from height is still the number one cause of fatal and non-fatal incidents in the construction sector. It accounts for half of all deaths on site. The findings, collated by specialist providers of plant hire in London, Herts Tools, used construction statistics from Health and Safety Executive reports from 2018 to 2021. The analysis demonstrates the impact of accidents in the construction industry and how workers and workplaces are being affected. Every year, there are 61,000 injuries to construction workers, on average, with a quarter of these caused by slips, trips and falls. The economic cost to Great Britain of construction injuries and ill health was around £16.2 billion in 2018/19. The majority of these costs (59% or £9.56 billion) fell upon the injured/ill individuals themselves. In 2020, the total cost of construction industry injuries was up 34% compared to 2018. Stefano Lobban, director at Herts Tools, says: “Although there will always be accidents in the construction industry, we can never stop trying to reduce them. These latest findings show just how far we have to

62

PLANT & CIVIL ENGINEER

go, with fatalities continuing to rise, despite the UK having some of the most thorough health and safety regulations anywhere. “Training is key to protecting workers, whether it’s highlighting dangers or teaching workers to make their own risk assessments on site. Then there’s ensuring workers have all the PPE they need, such as helmets, safety goggles and slip-resistant footwear. “I hope these findings act as a wakeup call to the industry and we’ll see a reduction in incident numbers next year.” Phil Beaumont, Health and safety consultant, says: “First and foremost it’s important for sites and companies to implement rules, procedures, and policies that people can follow clearly to conduct safe practice at work. Keeping a record of incidents and continuously assessing what went right,

“It’s also worth potentially looking at a buddy system, temporary assignments, reduced hours, and planning a stepped return to work for anyone who has experienced an incident in the industry”

Prevention How can companies prevent accidents on construction sites? • Provide training and plan all work at height properly • Use the correct equipment and regularly check it to prevent falls • Avoid slips and trips by keeping floors clean, dry, well-lit and free of obstacles • Clear up spillages quickly, deep cleaning after working hours • Install safety guards on machinery and provide safety goggles • Store heavy objects close to the ground, fit debris nets and outlaw throwing tools

FIRST HYUNDAI IN OPERATOR’S FLEET MAKES POSITIVE IMPACT

64

Changing brands is always a difficult decision and not one to be taken lightly, so when Leslie Black from Beech Hill Contracts needed to invest in a new 14 tonne excavator, he had a good look at what the market had to offer.

a brand new Hyundai HX140 AL crawler excavator from Northern Lift Trucks.

He has plenty of experience of plant and machinery, but he wanted to try something new as he began working on a private housing development off the Gilford Road in Lurgan and finally opted for

“We looked at a number of other brands and in the beginning Hyundai wasn’t really a contender until Northern Lift Trucks sent us a photograph of the new HX140 AL. I still wasn’t persuaded as in the past I had

PLANT & CIVIL ENGINEER

He probably wasn’t the easiest of customers to convince and in his words he took ‘a bit of a gamble,’ but it is a decision he hasn’t regretted.

a negative experience when I hired out a 2010 Hyundai machine some time ago; it just didn’t have sufficient hydraulic power.” So, how did he end up with the HX140AL? “One of the sales executives at Northern Lift Trucks, Roy Graham, who I knew from the past, invited me out on a Friday night to try the new model, which is powered by a Cummins engine; I was really impressed. The hydraulics have been massively improved, as have other features – it is a

view from the cab

spot for operators to improve work efficiency, with pilot pressure operated joysticks and pedals to provide almost effortless operation. The accelerator, remote air conditioner controller and instrument cluster can be operated using a convenient jog shuttletype controller, while an 8" capacitive-type display, similar to what you would find on a smartphone, is easy to read. Centralised switches on the display, for example, allow you to check Adblue/DEF levels and the temperature outside the cab.

totally different machine compared to what I experienced a few years back.” He adds: “This is the first time we have dealt with Northern Lift Trucks and Roy and the team there have been excellent from the word go. On the day it was delivered, Roy visited us to make sure we were happy with everything and on the day we put it to work on site, he was there again to help us become familiar with its operation.” When we caught up with Leslie and his team, they were digging foundations and carrying out general grounds works on the luxury development of 17 homes. “Our operators are impressed. It has a comfortable well laid out cab, robust build quality, great digging force and, as I mentioned, brilliant hydraulic power.”

STRESS FREE So, let’s take a closer look at this new machine, which is powered by a Cummins F3.8 134hp engine boosting an EGR free design whilst delivering 3% more power, 12% more peak torque and improved fuel economy. As Leslie noted, it certainly has been designed with the operator in mind; the cab offers an excellent working environment, no matter what the weather outside. Once you master the controls, it makes the working day a lot less stressful. Many electronic functions are concentrated in the most convenient

A proportional control switch with better speed control provides you with added convenience, especially when doing timeconsuming jobs; this function can also be switched to control by foot pedal, by changing the setting in the cluster menu. Whatever your preferred machine settings, these can be saved so they automatically kick in when starting the machine.

SAFETY FIRST Safety features also play a big factor in the design of the machine. For example, if the seatbelt is not buckled when the ignition key is turned, an alarm is triggered in intervals along with a continuous visual alert. The HX140AL comes standard with AAVM (Advanced Around View Monitoring Camera System) which consists of 4 state of the art cameras which gives an unobscured 360 degree field of vision. Working alongside that the HX140AL has IMOD (intelligent Moving Object Detection) which informs the operator when people or dangerous objects are detected within the range of operation. Other features to improve efficiency and overall performance include an Adjustable ‘Automatic Engine Shutdown’ which significantly reduces idle time, overall operating hours and fuel consumption. An Eco Gauge displays engine workload and fuel-saving status while the machine is working and there’s a function that will alert you to any inefficiencies in your working habits; after all, nobody’s perfect! A manual engine stop switch located behind the seat can be

used in emergencies. It can also be reached from outside the cab.

ROBUST BUILD QUALITY Build quality of the Hyundai HX140 AL can’t be faulted, as Leslie discovered. It’s one tough machine, from the ground up. The upper and lower structures have a higher durability, as proven through numerous tests including on the road and virtual simulation. The wear resistance of the bucket has also been improved by using a new, harder material, while the excavator utilises highpressure hoses with improved heat and pressure resistance, greatly increasing the durability of the equipment. As with other models in the HX A-Series, it adopts the upgraded EPIC system. It is able to optimise pump flow rate and power at various working conditions through the individual pump control. Furthermore, the optimised design of MCV and pipe line minimises energy loss such as conflux and throttle loss. For maximum convenience and security, the machine features Hyundai’s exclusive Hi-MATE remote fleet management system. It offers working information such as working / idling hours and fuel consumption. You can check the difference between total engine hours and actual working hours, see how productive your machines are and plan any required cost saving solutions. Fast and routine servicing is made possible with easy access to important servicing points as well as clear information about maintenance status via the instrument cluster. Ground level access to filters, lube fittings and master switches make servicing more convenient – and service intervals have increased by 100% from 500hrs to 1000hrs.

Like all Doosan excavators, much attention has been given to operator comfort and safety. The DX1000LC-7 has a new, very spacious operator cab, equipped with ergonomic controls and instrumentation. Special care has been taken to ensure noise is kept to a minimum through enhanced sealing of the engine compartment and extensive use of sound-dampening materials. All components and assemblies are designed, built and tested to ensure durability. Multistage filters and features such as track guards and cylinder guards for the boom and arm, the auto grease system and greased and sealed track links are designed to provide superior reliability and a long service life. The DX1000LC-7 is easy to maintain, further reducing downtime to a minimum. The DX1000LC-7 excavator is powered by the new stage V version of the well-proven Perkins 2806J diesel engine, providing a high power output of 469 kW (629 HP), more than any other machine in this class. The engine meets Stage V emission regulations by utilising exhaust gas recirculation, selective catalyst reduction, diesel oxidation catalyst and

COMFORT AND CONTROLLABILITY

diesel particulate filter (DPF) after-treatment technologies. The DPF automatically regenerates every 25 hours and the excavator continues to work unaffected during this regeneration phase. The operator can check the status of the DPF via the display on the gauge panel in the cab. The high output of the engine is combined with a Virtual Bleed Off (VBO) hydraulic system (D-ECOPOWER+), and controlled by electric manipulator (FEH) providing a best-in-class hydraulic flow of (3x 523) - 1569 l/min and a high system pressure of 360 bar, together contributing to the best performance in the 100tonnemarket. Doosan’s D-ECOPOWER+ FEH technology utilises an electronic pressure-controlled pump within a closed centre hydraulic system to optimise productivity and fuel consumption, depending on the mode selected. A closed centred main control valve minimises pressure loss, while the electric pressure-controlled pump manages and optimises engine power more effectively. Software is utilised to electronically reproduce

the full benefits of an open centre hydraulic system with very little energy loss. The hydraulic system and engine output are fully optimised and synchronised, further reducing losses within the system. Improved feedback to the operator through the joystick results in improved machine control and less operator fatigue. The acceleration and deceleration of the excavator workgroup functions are smoother, allowing operators to perform repetitive swinging and digging motions with less jerking movements.

BOOM AND SWING MODES To provide optimized operations when working with the DX1000LC-7 excavator, the operator can switch between two modes- Boom or Swinggiving priority to boom or swing movements, respectively, so they can best match how they are using the machine to the application they are working on. Faster working speeds are ensured by the 2-spool Boom Down Regeneration system in the DX1000LC-7, which also reduces fuel consumption. The 2-spool

Already excelling in spaciousness and ergonomics, the new cab in the DX1000LC-7 is designed to significantly enhance operator comfort and ease of operation. The cab has a new high quality seat and offers more features as standard than other machines on the market, ensuring super controllability and high precision in all applications. Key new features in the cab include a 8-inch touch-enabled colour LCD gauge panel, providing more information via a 30% larger screen; stereo system integrated in the gauge panel (with Bluetooth streaming function; and keyless start system. A full camera array is standard, comprising a front camera, two side cameras and a rear camera. The camera display is separated from the gauge panel and provides full visibility around the excavator and allows the operator to see a top-down view of the area outside the machine. This is combined with an AVM (around view monitoring) system as standard. LED working lamps are also standard on the DX1000LC-7, providing up to 75% better illumination of the workspace around the excavator, ensuring improved productivity in dusk and nighttime work and to help prevent accidents on site.

RECORD YEAR SPARKS EXPANSION FOR MOMENTUM GROUP Bangor, County Down based Momentum Group, a leading specialist R&D tax credits firm, is to invest over £1 million in a major expansion that will see it grow its presence in Scotland, creating a range of skilled jobs. Coming on the back of its best year ever recorded in 2021, the Momentum Group’s growth plans have already seen the appointment of a Glasgow-based Business Manager and strengthening of its executive leadership team. The firm will also create a range of professional roles across its wider operations over the next two years. Established in 2009, Momentum specialises in helping clients to understand and document innovation projects and R&D activity within their businesses. With companies able to reclaim up to 33% of their R&D spend from HMRC, the firm, to date, has generated over £200 million of tangible tax savings for its clients across the UK – something which Managing Director Tom Verner said is “not easily replicated”. According to Tom, Momentum experienced “unprecedented growth” in 2021, despite challenges posed by the ongoing global pandemic. “We continued to grow throughout the pandemic and continued to partner with more accountancy firms, legal practices and joint venture opportunities, as well as recording significant growth in new business generated directly by our business development team,” he said.

70

PLANT & CIVIL ENGINEER

“Having experienced our best year on record in 2021, we have entered 2022 in a strong position and are poised for further growth in the next two years.

NEW BUSINESS MANAGER “We will invest in expanding our dedicated team in Scotland who, led by newly appointed Business Manager Kyle McGuigan, will build upon recent business successes there and continue growing the Momentum footprint into the north of England.” Momentum’s growing team currently includes R&D consultants, chartered accountants, specialist business consultants with backgrounds in ‘Big Four’ firms, and business support professionals who possess a deep understanding of tax relief legislation and its real-world industry applications. To date, Momentum has worked closely with thousands of companies, across most industry sectors, to identify and analyse activities and costs which qualify for R&D tax credits, Capital Allowances and Land Remediation Relief.

INVALUABLE OPPORTUNITY The most recent R&D Tax Credit figures published by HMRC indicate that Northern Ireland businesses accounted for £135 million of all R&D tax credits claimed across the UK for the year 2019-2020 – an increase of 13% from the previous year. However, with local firms accounting for just 5.5% of the total number of R&D tax credits claimed across the UK, Momentum’s

Kyle McGuigan, urged companies to avail of this “invaluable opportunity” through the R&D tax relief scheme. “Whilst this year-on-year increase in claims of 40% is encouraging and reflects what we are seeing in our own business, many Scottish companies are clearly not aware or are not fully optimising the financial benefits available through the R&D tax relief scheme,” he said. “With the rising costs of materials and utilities, we would urge companies to get in touch to explore how they can avail of this invaluable opportunity to secure real financial benefits that could be reinvested in further R&D and innovation and, in turn, underpin their business growth plans. “Whether a company is new to R&D, Capital Allowances or Land remediation relief, or simply requires a second opinion, we can provide the support and expertise required.” The average amount claimed by companies in Northern Ireland in 2019-2020 was £57,250, with the average for SMEs being £41,000. For SMEs, this represented an 11% increase in the number of claims and a 13% increase in the value of claims. Significantly, there was a serious shift in how Northern Ireland’s larger companies are benefiting the most from the scheme - with the monetary value of claims by large companies increasing by 150% and total number of claims growing by 25%.

court report

County Armagh Company fined for unnecessary spread of asbestos material The Health and Safety Executive Northern Ireland (HSENI) has successfully led a prosecution against a County Armagh company, resulting in fines totalling £10,500. The company pleaded guilty to a total of six health and safety offences which related to the removal of asbestos

containing materials at a former factory site. The prosecution arose as a result of an HSENI visit to the factory site where an Inspector observed workers throwing what was believed to be asbestos cement sheeting onto the ground through a window opening of the derelict factory building. Significant amounts of this material were also noted in the immediate

suitable respiratory protective equipment designed to further reduce the potential exposure of workers to asbestos fibres. At the time of the visit, the Inspector served a prohibition notice preventing any further asbestos removal work from continuing.

area outside the building. The material was later confirmed to contain asbestos fibres consistent with those found in asbestos cement sheeting.

HSENI Inspector Gavin Rowan said: “The failure of the company to clearly identify the presence and condition of asbestos before any removal work was a fundamental error. In this case, the absence of effective control measures placed workers at unnecessary risk from exposure to asbestos fibres.”

During the inspection, the Inspector did not observe the use of any control measures that are required during the removal of asbestos containing materials. In addition, employees of the company were not wearing

The incident occurred when an employee was sweeping near recently stacked bales of waste plastic film. The bales, weighing

between 360kg to 520kg, collapsed on him without warning which led to fatal injuries. Mark Cullen, Assistant Chief Executive with the Health and Safety Authority, said, “The circumstances of this tragic incident should be a warning to all employers to ensure that appropriate safe systems of work are in place to protect their employees. Furthermore, such measures should be specified in the company safety statement and communicated clearly to their employees.”

County Down poultry companies fined for health and safety failings The HSENI has successfully led a prosecution against two County Armagh based companies, following an investigation into an incident which occurred in 2017 that resulted in an employee receiving life changing crush injuries. Both companies pleaded guilty to health and safety offences at an earlier hearing. One was fined £125,000, while the other was fined £18,000. The investigation found that on 1 December 2017, a

male employee was working along with others in a commercial chicken house. While working in near dark conditions he received multiple crush injuries when he was struck by a forklift truck. The only light sources in the chicken house at the time of the incident consisted of blue lights on the forklift truck, and head torches worn by the workers who had personally provided the equipment themselves.

Despite the poorly lit conditions, the company had supplied the workers with dark blue overalls.

because the principles of managing workplace transport were not applied.

Both companies were found to have failed in their legal responsibilities to ensure safe working conditions in the chicken house where a forklift truck was required to operate in the same area as pedestrian workers.

“The very real risks associated with forklift trucks are well known. In this particular case, reasonable measures to prevent vehicle collisions with workers were not in place in a work area where there was an increased risk due to the dark conditions.

Speaking after the hearing, Anne Cassidy, HSENI Inspector said: “This was an avoidable incident that resulted in life changing injuries to an employee

“The risk assessment and safe working procedures did not identify suitable controls that could easily have been implemented.”

ENGCON’S NEW COMPACTOR PLATE INCREASES EXCAVATOR EFFICIENCY As a further step forward in making the excavator an effective tool carrier, a newly developed compactor plate for excavators in the size 12-24 tonnes is now being launched by engcon. The PC6000 compactor plate has been adapted for use under a tiltrotator, increasing the excavator’s efficiency whilst reducing risk of personal injury. Combining a compactor plate with an excavator is becoming more common for soil compaction, reducing the number of machines or tools required for the task. Personal safety has also been increased by removing the need to have a person with a hand operator compactor in a shaft with the risk of walls collapsing because of vibrations or a chain or strap breaking whilst lifting equipment. All of this significantly increases workplace safety, an area that is close to engcon’s heart. Furthermore, the working area becomes larger as it is possible to rotate and

angle the compactor plate so that it follows the lines of the ground.

ADVANTAGES OF ENGCON PC6000

“Yes, we’ve now increased the flexibility of the excavators so that the excavator operator can tilt and rotate the compactor plate. Among other things, it’s possible to compress around slopes and wells, without constantly having to change the position of the machine. This means that the excavator can perform more types of work”, says Johan Johansson, designer and project manager for the new compactor plate.

+ EC-Oil automatic quick hitch system is standard, which means that the driver can connect the compactor plate and its hydraulics without having to leave the cab.

Like other hydraulic tools from engcon, the EC-Oil automatic quick hitch system is standard on the new compactor plate PC6000, which is another step in the continued work of developing tools with automatic quick hitch systems. “The hydraulics are connected automatically with EC-Oil, which means that the driver saves time and money and increases safety by not having to go out to connect tricky and dirty connections manually. If it is rainy, cold and snowy, comfort is significantly increased”, Johan Johansson continues.

+ Low flow requirement means that the PC6000 can be driven via the tiltrotator’s extra hydraulics. + In combination with a tiltrotator, greater access is provided, and it becomes easier to perform more types of work. + No personnel needed in a shaft minimises the risk of personal injury, which can occur if the shaft wall collapses due to the vibrations. + No lifting with hand-operated compactor plates that can be dropped or swung into personnel or the surroundings. + Fewer hoses that can wear out or break due to the fact that no leakage oil line is needed. + Screwable gate makes it easy to change to another hitch system.

drainage trenchers

MASTENBROEK ENJOYS RESURGANCE OF INTEREST IN SPECIALIST SPORTS FIELD MACHINE The UK’s leading designer of drainage trenchers has reported an unexpected resurgence of interest in its specialist sports field machine; last month, Mastenbroek received its first order for one of its 10/12D trenchers in over a decade. The machine, which has recently been upgraded to feature the latest low-emission engine and improved operator controls, has been bought by AgriPower. Established in 1964 as an agricultural drainage contractor, AgriPower entered the sports turf industry in 1978. The company has won several large contracts in the last six months, creating the need for a new machine. The 2022 10/12D will work alongside AgriPower’s other Mastenbroek machines: a 30/20, 20/15 and CT12. “We have never retired the 10/12D,” says Mastenbroek’s commercial director, Christopher Pett. “It’s always been available, but for some unknown reason, we haven’t sold one since 2009. That changed late last year when Graham Longdin at AgriPower contacted us. Since then, it’s been a bit like the saying about London buses and, following Graham’s order, we sold another 10/12D and received four other enquiries about it!” AgriPower, which is based in Buckinghamshire but operates across the country, secured several large contracts at the back end of 2021, including work at the Webb Ellis Fields for Rugby school, several

76

PLANT & CIVIL ENGINEER

other public schools, local authorities and golf courses. “We have enjoyed a buoyant period recently, with a significant

number of organisations wanting to install new sports fields or improve the drainage of existing playing fields and golf courses, which is great news for us,” says Graham Longdin, director at AgriPower. “With the new contracts coming on top of a very successful recent

trading period, we’ve decided to update our front line machines to remain ahead of the game. “The Mastenbroek 10/12D was the ideal choice. We could use a spinning disc type trencher behind a tractor, which would be fine on graded pitch work, but when faced with undulating ground, deep or wide trenching, the disc trenchers cannot cope, and fail to give the required accuracy. The 10/12D handles this type of terrain effortlessly. “The 10/12D offers exceptional comfort for the driver, and its controls make it easy to oversee tracking and chain speed. It offers an attractive cost of ownership, especially as it now features the latest stage five emission engines.”

ULSTER SHREDDERS RECEIVES FIRST SUCCESSFUL ADISA VALIDATION Added Paul: “Speaking on behalf of the engineering and sales team, I am thrilled to see that our machines meet the requirements of the ADISA. Confidential Shredding is a key market for us, and we understand the importance of destroying personal/ corporate data. From the early stages of design to our shredders being installed, it’s reassuring knowing that our machines meet the requirements and will successful destroy any opportunity of fraudulent use.”

Ulster Shredders has received successful validation from ADISA, the world’s leading certification body for data sanitisation services and products, further enhancing its offering of high performing shredding solutions, removing all opportunities of data breach and reuse of data bearing media. The use of shredding to destroy hard drives and protect data is widespread and is generally confirmed as being the most effective method of data destruction. However, it is important that machines are validated as inadequate shredding processes allow a clear exploitable vulnerability in data bearing media. ADISA Founder Steve Mellings says: “Where shredding is concerned, many organisations are dismissive of the need of verification as there is an assumption that ‘shredded drives’ have indeed been shredded but I’ve personally witnessed cages of media which are physically still intact when they should’ve been shredded and NAND cells being unimpacted by a shred. Oversight of this process and the use reputable companies is essential, so we welcomed Ulster Shredder’s approach to have independent validation of their products.” ADISA visited Ulster Shredders headquarters and performed controlled shreds on two of its shredding machines, the U-15 and U-45SB using pre-prepared magnetic and solid-state drives. The shredded particulate was then analysed for shred-size verification as well as

from a data recovery perspective, to ensure data was destroyed and irrecoverable. Sales and Service Director Paul Atkinson of Ulster Shredders explains: “We have clients who require particular shred sizes for the output from our products and typically we have provided them with assurance due to specification of screen to be used. However, this isn’t the whole story as you still get larger shred particles than the actual aperture of the screen. For this reason, we approached ADISA and asked how they could help us provide assurance for our customers.” ADISA have produced detailed test reports, including tables of shred size. This enabled the adherence to specific requirements set out in the Information Technology Standard ISO (International Standard Organisation) 21964 to be verified. This standard defines the terms and principles for the destruction of data carriers.

Launched in 2010, ADISA Certification has been certifying data sanitisation products including software overwriting and hardware destruction tools for over 10 years. It is also the scheme owner for the Asset Recovery Standard 8.0 which was formally recognised by the UK Information Commissioner in 2021. recycling & waste management

Big changes in the pipeline for Northern Ireland’s waste industry The way that waste in Northern Ireland will be handled over the next few years will change dramatically following consultations by Defra and the UK’s devolved administrations, according to Joseph Doherty, Managing Director of Re-Gen Waste. In Northern Ireland, the Department of Agriculture, Environment & Rural Affairs is still analysing the responses. One of the most significant consultations was on plans to introduce Extended Producer Responsibility on packaging. The concept of producer responsibility – placing the cost of recycling of products at end of life onto those that placed the products onto the market, has been applied across the EU and in many other countries for years. The detailed workings of the system are still to be hammered out, but it is expected that a central government-appointed administrator will take responsibility for obtaining fees from the affected businesses. The administrator will then pay local authorities and waste collectors for the costs involved in the collection, transport and recycling of packaging waste from households and small businesses. A deposit return scheme (DRS) could be introduced to encourage the public to bring empty beverage containers to collection points in return for a small payment. Councils will be required to collect a more consistent range of recyclables to avoid the current uncertainty over what can actually be placed in the household recycling bin. Joseph Doherty believes that changes will be introduced in 2024 at the earliest but may be later, he says: “There are big changes in the pipeline for 2024 although there has been optimistic talk of a 2023 start date. It is hoped that the scheme will see an increase in recycling targets but perhaps more significantly, current estimates are that up to £2.7billion per year will be charged to companies that place packaged goods onto the UK market. “Businesses will come under pressure to separate higher levels of materials for recycling. The anticipated new regulations will apply a far higher cost for packaging waste that under the current system has cost UK firms on average between £50-150 million per year. “Those companies that use difficult to collect and recycle packaging, will pay a far higher cost than those whose packaging is easily collected and recycled, thus forcing businesses to place more sustainable packaging on the market.

Innovation Needed “The goal is to reduce packaging and increase recycling levels, and it is clear that innovation will be required. Recently, there has been widespread concern over the level of plastic PLANT & CIVIL

Joseph Doherty, Managing Director, Re-Gen Waste.

that ends up as litter and polluting oceans. Tensions between the main purpose of packaging and its end-of-life environmental impact will have to be finely judged. If more food is wasted through the use of easy-torecycle packaging, we need to question if there is a risk that reducing packaging will lead to a shorter shelf life for food thus creating more waste food which is worse.” He claims that the potential costs of the deposit return scheme have led to widespread industry concerns, especially following the turmoil caused by Covid-19. However, the UK Government’s recycling minister Jo Churchill says it will be for businesses to decide if they will improve and reduce their packaging. The alternative is that they may just pass on the cost to the consumer. In 2018, the Government launched the Resource and Waste Strategy, a document that set a timeline for far reaching changes to the way that waste is managed, to place much more emphasis on the Circular Economy and waste being treated as a resource. Included in this was an intention to apply producer responsibility to a much wider range of materials to improve environmental performance and to transfer cost from the public purse to industry and ultimately, the consumer. These include bulky waste such as furniture and mattresses, textiles, tyres, construction waste and fishing gear.

Investment Required The waste industry is having to up its game to meet the challenges ahead. Not

only will the controls tighten, but there will need to be extensive investment in the way that waste is processed once it has been collected, to achieve much greater separation and much higher quality of output for the recycling industry. “Re-Gen has already started that process and, we believe, is ahead of the game. But there is no room for complacency and both householders and businesses will also have to play their part in correctly separating out recyclable waste from nonrecyclates. Re-Gen has made significant investment in its recycling facility. “We need to consider the unintended consequences of packaging changes and how that will coincide with carbon usage, and how the focus needs to be on a joined up approach. It is essential to measure the cost of food and carbon usage against the cost of packaging and a full life-cycle analysis together. “The long-term target is that the UK will develop the recycling infrastructure necessary to be self-sufficient in capacity and maximise the circular economy opportunities. Coupled with that target is the global movement towards an environmentally friendly, intelligent and workable way to handle waste in the future. The creation of clean, green innovative jobs in design, research, manufacturing, engineering and technology is a challenge for our entire economy beyond the next five, ten or 15 years.” Find us on Facebook

MANVIK & DENNIS EAGLE CLEANING UP IN REFUSE COLLECTION VEHICLES MARKET they need anything more, Manvik is just minutes away on the Belfast Harbour Estate. Our goal is to provide a customer support service second to none and our service engineers will beon the scene in no time.”

Five new Dennis Eagle refuse collection vehicles (RCVs) have started work with Ards and North Down Borough Council, rounding off a bumper year for the Belfast-based dealer Manvik Plant & Hire Ltd.

This emphasis on customer service has played a crucial role in winning orders for Manvik. Since July 2021, Dennis Eagle vehicles have been delivered to Armagh City, Banbridge & Craigavon BC, Belfast CC, Derry City & Strabane DC, Fermanagh & Omagh DC, Mid Ulster DC and more will be delivered to Belfast CC and Causeway Coast & Glens BC any day now.

The 26-tonne vehicles all feature the Elite 6x2 mid-steer chassiswith Olympus 23m3 bodies and Terberg OmniDEKA electric binlifts. “These new trucks mean we now have 26 front line Dennis Eagle RCVs and eight back-up trucks at Ards and North Down, all fitted with Terberg lifts,” said Manvik director Alan Haire. “This latest order was an easy choice for the council to make. The vehicles have already proven themselves to the council to be very efficient and very reliable. In addition to that, the drivers, crews and engineersare alreadyvery familiar with them, which obviously helps. “The low-entry cab is particularly popular with everyone. It’s both safer and easier to get in and out – which, of course, the

crews are doing all day long, so they love it. But it also means fewer injuries from slips and falls, fewer people off work and less unbudgeted cost for operators to cover – so they love it too. “And while the council looks after routine service and maintenance in-house, whenever

“During the pandemic lockdowns, orders dried up,”said Alan. “But while we knew they’d pick up again, once everyone returned to their routines, nobody expected the boom to be as sustained as this. “We’ve supplied around 50 trucks in the last 12 months – nearly double what we’ve sold before – and there’s no sign of it letting up.” He believes the combination of great vehicles with the best customer support in the

recycling & waste management industry from both Manvik and Dennis Eagle, is proving to be the winning combination. “Our existing customers keep coming back to us, which is always reassuring but we’ve had a couple of orders from outside our established customer base too,” said Alan. “Cost and efficiency are the key requirements but of course, efficiency isn’t just about how good the vehicle is. It’s strongly influenced by how good the customer support is and our hard-earned reputation is attracting attention. “At Manvik, we’re a one-stop-shop catering for all our customers’ needs. We understand that they are trying to provide increasingly better services to the residents and businesses they serve. We realise they’re trying to do this in increasingly challenging circumstances. “So, in order for them to succeed, they need us towork to the very highest standards and aim to constantly improve what we do. That’s what Manvik Plant & Hire is about.”

Minister welcomes investment in Magherafelt Household Recycling Centre Environment Minister Edwin Poots has visited a Household Recycling Centre in Magherafelt as work begins on improvements to the site, following a £945,898 grant from his Department’s Household Waste Recycling Collaborative Change Programme. The funding was awarded to Mid Ulster District Council to redevelop the Magherafelt Household Recycling Centre (HRC) and Transfer Station to provide a bespoke state of the art recycling centre and transfer facility, which will increase both the quantity and quality of recyclable materials collected on the site. “Designed almost 20 years ago, utilising open skips and rear-end loaded collection vehicles, the site has evolved and operations expanded to include a waste transfer station for the council’s kerbside blue and black bin materials and as a result it is now no longer fit for purpose.” “The new facilities will provide increased and better material separation and storage on site of recyclables, as well as resulting in a reduced overall environmental impact due to less vehicle movements, better waste

containment and the reduction of litter from open top skips. The customer experience will also improve through better access, signage and fit for purpose containers and compactors at the site. By the end of the first full year of operation, the improved Magherafelt Household

Recycling Centre should result in an additional 1,958 tonnes of recyclable material being diverted from landfill.” He added: “Over the past few years we have seen an ever increasing positive and responsible public attitude towards recycling and it is

important that we continue to collaborate with local councils and stakeholders to ensure this trend continues. By improving our recycling facilities we can ensure that the quality of our recycling improves, thereby reducing our landfill. This benefits both our economy and our environment.”

Terex Washing Systems Divert Waste from Landfill with Wash Recycling Plant Terex Washing Systems have completed the installation of a wash recycling plant based in Geneva, Switzerland. The wash plant converts construction, demolition and excavation waste into two sands and three aggregate products that are stockpiled for use in the production of asphalt. All this is achieved while recycling up to 95% of the water used during the washing process. A complete crushing, screening and washing solution was provided to the customer on a compact footprint in order to meet their specific requirements. The Terex Washing Systems engineers used over 60 years of industry experience, along with a product from their sister company Terex MPS, to find solutions that would meet the needs of the customer. The aim was a throughput of 100 tonnes per hour with the option of crushing oversized material included. The wash plant consists of an FM 120 2-G Sand Plant, an Aggrescrub 150 Log Washer complete with pre-screen and a Terex MPS Impact Crusher. This section of the wash plant washes, classifies and stockpiles aggregates while recovering two specifications of sand. Any oversized material fed into the system is directed towards the Terex MPS crusher where it is crushed down to a manageable size before being fed back into the washing system. The customer can also feed oversized material directly into the crusher. A fully integrated water treatment plant, that consists of a Deep Cone Thickener, Flocculant Dosing Unit and a Filter Press, allows up to

95% of the water used in the washing process to be re-used. The dirty water is collected in a sump before being treated and allowed to settle in the Deep Cone Thickener. The thickened sludge is then compressed within the Filter Press so that the last remaining water is sent back into the system. The customer is then able to sell the filter cakes that are expelled from the Filter Press. The Geneva based customer is now able to divert thousands of tonnes of construction, demolition and excavation waste from landfill each year. They can achieve this while producing six separate products to be sold or used during asphalt production

and further reducing the environmental impact thanks to the water treatment plant. Explains Johnston Patterson, Product and Applications Manager at Terex Washing Systems: “We have provided a complete end to end wash recycling solution for the customer. Our ability to fully integrate washing, crushing and water treatment allows us to design and manufacture systems that perform to a higher standard. Everything is here, from feeder to filter press.” This washing system provides the customer with a sustainable production line of sand and aggregate products from material that would otherwise be sent to landfill.

CDE LAUNCHES ITS LARGEST AND MOST ADVANCED WATER MANAGEMENT SYSTEM operators to process challenging, harder to settle materials.

CDE, a leading supplier of wet processing solutions for the natural processing and waste recycling sectors, has revealed its new AquaCycle A2500 thickener, the latest addition to its top-of-theline water management and recycling systems.

Designed for easy use and safe access for efficient maintenance, it boasts the first lattice bridge structure on any CDE thickener. An integrated monorail also provides unrivalled access to the motorised rake, gearbox and motor.

With a capacity of 2500m³/ hour, the new A2500 is CDE’s largest and most advanced water management system to date. It has been developed in response to calls from materials processors operating in high tonnage markets for water management solutions equipped to supply their operations with sufficient water supplies while ensuring optimal production efficiency, minimum loss of fines and maximum water recycling. Darren Eastwood, Strategic Development Director at CDE, says: “It is increasingly important for materials processors to invest in an effective water management system that ensures a steady supply of

clean water to their plants through cost-effective means. “The continued advancement of our pioneering wet processing solutions and leading-edge water management systems is supporting operators working in the natural processing and waste recycling sectors worldwide to overcome the challenges of washing in water-pressured or water scarce areas today.”

Where CDE bridged the gap in 2018 with the launch of its A900 and A1500, providing a median alternative to its 600m³/hour and 1500m³/hour models, the new A2500 expands the range with a 2500m³/hour option to fit the requirements of sites processing high tonnages. The increased capacity also provides a lower rise rate, enabling

With a sludge capacity of 125 tonnes/hour, the A2500 includes an adjustable rake lifting mechanism. Featuring passive torque control, the automatic raise and start sequence is designed to protect rakes from surge pressure from dense sludges. The rake itself has also been reimagined, with optimally spaced and redesigned blades for improved sludge conditioning. Powered by the motorised rake arm, the introduction of a new floating scum scraper, which is independent of the rake’s height, allows for the easy removal of unwanted foam, oil and light weight trash.

like the full AquaCycle range, significantly reduces costly water consumption by ensuring up to 90% of process water is recycled for immediate recirculation.

Another key feature of the new A2500 is its feed height. Sitting at almost 6.7 metres (6690mm), it simplifies upstream plant design complexity as it eliminates the need for expensive civils, helping to expedite the commissioning process of entire plant solutions.

Darren says the development of the new A2500 delivers all the benefits of CDE’s

With a tank diameter of 20 metres and a weight of 88 tonnes when empty and 1,150 tonnes when full, the A2500 features a small footprint whilst packing a punchy 2500m³/hour and a solids capacity of 125 tonnes/hour. An alternative to water extraction from natural sources and the costly process of pumping water to the plant, CDE’s A2500,

existing AquaCycle range on a much larger scale. “It responds directly to the needs of materials processors operating in high tonnage markets. These operations, primarily in the areas of C&D waste, specialist sands and heavily clay-bound aggregates,

require higher volumes of water resources; they need flexible water management systems with the capacity to supply their operations without compromising on footprint; and they need a system that can deliver this in a way that improves efficiency, driving down operational costs to maximise profitability and enable fast return on investment. These are the guiding principles that underscore the design and development of the new A2500.” Throughout 2022, CDE is celebrating its 30th year in business. It has significant plans to mark the milestone, including strengthening its manufacturing capabilities and expanding its workforce in response to increasing demand. In 2021, CDE recorded its most successful year to date with more bookings than ever before.

EURO AUCTIONS HOST SPECIALIST ONE-DAY ‘OFF SITE’ SALE FOR GA SMITH PLANT HIRE Euro Auctions showcased their exceptional ability to host ‘off site’ sales with the recent auction conducted for GA Smith Plant Hire which was held at the clients Cramlington yard just north of Newcastle. Euro Auctions has gained an envious reputation for organising and hosting such one-off sales at the client’s own facility in a variety of market sectors, including plant hire, demolition, construction, aggregates, recycling, and agriculture. But what made this sale so special was the fact that it was held on the eve of Europe’s biggest used plant and machinery auction, which is held at the Euro Auctions flag-ship site in Leeds and repeatedly puts in excess of 5,500 lots over the ramp during a four-day sale. GA Smith made the decision to withdraw from the plant hire arena, selling their inventory to focus their attentions on the bulk handling, bulk haulage, and the earthworks elements of their business. As a result, 250+ pieces of good well-maintained machinery, including excavators, dozers, articulated dump trucks, crushers, tractors, and other assorted ex-rental machinery came onto the market and were disposed of in a one-day, unreserved sale. With a hammer total for the sale of just under £7m, the average price per lot was close to £26,000 showing the general size and value of many items in the sale. With a good compliment of big-ticket items, including: 20t,10t and 6t excavators, Dozers, Articulated Dump Trucks, and Backhoes, there was much interest from an international audience. Predictably the most successful buying nations were the UK and the Republic of Ireland, however successful bids were

90

PLANT & CIVIL ENGINEER

received from Portugal, Spain, Netherlands, Belgium, Czech Republic, Poland, Romania, Bulgaria, Cyprus, and Turkey, such is the global reach that Euro Auctions has. Marketing to an international audience is part of the setup for all sales, so whilst GA Smith may be in Northumberland, international buyers are made aware by Euro Auctions of the type of equipment on offer at a sale of this nature. David Betts of Euro Auctions explains the significance of this sale. “This was a very significant sale on two counts. Firstly, holding an ‘off-site’ sale of this size so close to the big sale Euro Auctions hosts in Leeds showcases our capability to manage multiple auctions. Off-Site sales require a dedicated team to set up exactly the same infrastructure we have in the permanent sites in Leeds, including: bid catchers, registration teams, auctioneers, finance teams to take payments, yard teams to set up the sale, complete Wi-Fi across the site, as well as onsite welfare, screens for online bidding, and the list goes on. “Hosting a £7m sale the day before a £40m sale does require good organizational skills. The second point is that for this very localised sale in the Northeast, Euro Auctions was able to tap into our database and market to an international audience. In truth, we are able to be very granular and market to specific buyers, who for example may have bought 20t excavators before, or big articulated dump trucks, etc, matching buyers with specific items, making for more competitive bidding, and gaining best price for the seller.” Notable lots, with specification and price, include:
