TGO’s 2023 Spring Cup

It’s an annual event that TGO’s Golf Pro, Chuck Kandt, refers to as his favorite event of the year. Our TGO resident golfers divide into two teams - and just like when you were a kid, a captain for each team is selected and they proceed to alternate their selections until each team is full. Mark Anderson was the captain for the Golfin’ Gators while Wayne Condra headed up the Hurricane Hustlers. The Gators wore blue shirts and the Hustlers wore green. After two days of match play golf, the Gators out hustled the Hustlers, resulting in the Hustlers serving a delicious steak dinner to each of the winning team members while they settled for hot dogs and beans. Meet The Hendersons - Martha and Ed

Our TGO community is know for its volunteers, and without them this place would have a difficult time operating. This issue includes a close-up on Martha and Ed Hederson, who can be considered volunteers extraordinaire. Ed is an Army vet and contributes to the military commissaries. Martha is a well known volunteer in TGO for.... just about everything! The Nature Center, the Quilt Club, Meals on Wheels... the list goes on. If you have a project that needs some fundraising, call Martha. She is known as the Queen of the Tip Jar - Martha can sell ANYTHING! For a better insight to this incredible couple, check out page 32.

Dear TGO Community,

This week following the Easter holiday typically begins our low season here at TGO. Much of my work moving forward is focused on coordinating with vendors, supporting the CSA crews, and scheduling and tracking maintenance work and improvement projects. If you are traveling north soon, Cliff and I will keep you posted on community activities and progress through my Manager’s Corner, the Chairman’s Notes, and photos in The Happenings. Last week we repaired a potable water leak in the Hammock Oaks neighborhood, we made progress on the renovation of our golf maintenance shop, and we conducted some forestry clearing around two of our lakes, Hopper Lake and Bob’s Lake. This is the start of many more improvement projects scheduled this season.

One of my favorite phrases is “Trust in God, but lock your car.” Although we live inside a 24-hour gated community, we are not immune to crime. Recently a man wearing a hoodie and mask walked through the Hidden Lakes community late at night, and opportunistically checked for unlocked vehicles. He rummaged through an estimated ten vehicles left unlocked, and some petty theft took place. If you have any information about this incident, please contact me. Please take precautions to make sure your property is locked and protected, and consider wifi surveillance cameras to watch your property when you are not home.

Soon The Great Outdoors will host two local high school proms. The Manor will be the location for Titusville High School’s prom next Friday, April 21, followed by Astronaut High School’s prom on Saturday, April 29. You will certainly notice some extra traffic on our TGO roads those evenings, along with many cars parked in our Manor parking lot. Blue Heron will provide some snacks and desserts on those evenings. We have hosted Titusville High’s prom in recent years, and have found the event very well organized and chaperoned, and we expect the same results this year.

This past Monday our Blue Heron Kitchen received a new 4-ton roof-top air conditioner. Fortunately, our restaurant is now closed on Mondays, giving us a full day to perform this work. Next Monday we have hired a professional cleaning company to perform a deep cleaning of our dining area floors and kitchen. Closing the Blue Heron on Mondays gives us the time to conduct these types of projects, and also allows our restaurant team a much needed day to rest after a busy season.

Seven hundred owners and residents of TGO took the recent Blue Heron survey. You shared some great feedback and ideas with the Restaurant Advisory Committee and senior CSA staff. This survey shared that most diners are looking for simple pub style food, followed by lighter and healthier fare, and many want more seafood options. Most of our customers commented on wanting better service, more daily and weekly specials, more comfort foods, and lower prices. Although our Blue Heron Restaurant cannot be all things to everyone, we do plan to use this feedback to develop a new spring menu soon, and begin preparing our fall menu for the upcoming high season. Thank you for your feedback!

As a reminder, our April board meeting will take place next week, on Wednesday, April 19 at 3:00 pm. Prior to the board meeting, Alligator Frank Robb will be at The Manor at 2:00 pm for a meet and greet, followed by a presentation called “Living with Alligators” at 2:30 pm. I hope to see you there.

2023 Spring Cup April 1 & 2

The 3rd Edition of the Men’s Spring Cup took place April 1 and 2. Two teams clad in matching team shirts headed out for a weekend of Ryder Cup match play competition. The Golfin’ Gators, led by Captain Mark Anderson, battled the Hurricane Hustlers who were led by Captain Wayne Condra. The Gators chomped on the Hustlers on day one and built a 30+ point lead (161-127) that would have made The Mayor, Walter, very pleased.

Despite the day 1 set back, Captain Condra attempted to inspire his green clad group with chants of Green Machine, Green Machine. While the effort was commendable, the lead built up by the Gators was just too much to overcome. With the cork popped on a bottle of bubbly, Captain Anderson accepted and hoisted the Cup and celebrated a dominating victory. The final talley; Gators 453, Hustlers 411.

Both teams then retired to the clubhouse for the traditional serving of a steak dinner and exchange of gifts. Captain Condra then gathered his team together for their fill of hot dogs and beans! Head Professional Chuck Kandt praised both teams for their spirit of competition and sportsmanship in what has become one of the most popular events at TGO.

With the champions in place, winning team Captain Mark Anderson was asked to name a benefiting charity from fundraising activities that took place during the event. His choice was the Gary Sinise Foundation, benefiting military families.

Owners are encouraged to attend all the Board of Director meetings. Green speaker cards are available if an owner wishes to address the board for three minutes about any issue. An informational packet with the meeting agenda is given to each household that attends. Prior to the meeting, the agenda is posted on official bulletin boards. The board meeting is televised LIVE on this same channel.

CSA Board of Directors meetings are held on the third Wednesday from October through May. Planning meetings to set the agenda for the Board of Directors meetings are scheduled October to May on the second Wednesday of the month in the CSA Conference Room at 3:00 pm. They are open to attend for any TGO owner.

There are ten CSA voting districts at The Great Outdoors. They are non-geographical, but are determined by the last digit in each property’s street address. The District Meetings are held monthly from October through May. Various districts join together to hold combined monthly meetings. There are two meetings per month with five districts in each one. Please note the upcoming meeting schedule if you want to attend your district meeting.

Architectural Review Committee

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that the next ARC Meeting will be held on the following date at 10:00 am on the Plantation Manor Porch: April 19, 2023

The Architectural Review Committee meets for planning purposes on the Plantation Manor Porch at 10:00 am on Tuesday, April 17, 2023.

All changes to your property that are visible on the outside require advance approval from the Architectural Review Committee. Application forms and ARC Guidelines may be obtained from the Community Services Association office or printed from The Great Outdoors Community Services Association website at www.tgocsa.org. All completed ARC forms must be submitted to the CSA office by Noon on the Wednesday before the next Wednesday meeting. Results will be available to pick up after the ARC meeting or from the CSA Office. Be sure ALL necessary paperwork is included with your ARC application. No approval will be given without having all the required data available at the ARC Meeting for review.

TGO property owners are encouraged to suggest modifications to the ARC Guidelines, which will be discussed during an annual review. Please submit them to the ARC Secretary, in writing, no later in the year than October 1.

Guidelines For Tenant Registration By Owners

1. All tenants must be registered with the CSA Office in order to be entered into the Gatehouse System.

If you are leasing your property or if you are letting a guest use your property in your absence, they need to be registered with the CSA Office.

2. Why do they need to be registered? There are several reasons why:

a. If your tenant wants to call in a visitor and the tenant is not registered as residing within TGO, then the visitor will not be allowed entrance because as far as the Security Officer knows, the tenant doesn’t reside at TGO.

b. If the tenant is not registered and there is an emergency situation where the tenant needs to be notified, the CSA would be unable to contact them because they are not registered and we will not know how to contact the tenant.

c. If your tenant wants to receive mail (UPS/FedEx/Priority Mail/medicine), the mail will not be accepted at the Mail Facility because they are not registered as living at TGO.

3. What information does the CSA Office need?

4. Your tenant must get a gate pass from the Guard Gate. The tenant may stop by the CSA Office to get maps, pool wrist bands, TV channel line-up, “The Happenings” newsletter, etc. Also, if the guest extends their stay, or departs early, their gate pass expiration date must also be updated. You, the owner, must notify the CSA Office beforehand to have these changes made or the tenant will automatically be removed from the system along with any other applicable information.

CSA Trash Pick Up Rules

The CSA crew picks up household trash 364 days of the year (off for Christmas). You’ll see them in a big truck pulling one or more green hoppers behind it. The guy crouching on the hopper grabs your trash bag as they pass by. To make the collection process efficient, please follow these important rules

• Break down all boxes and put all packing material in a closed bag.

• Close all trash bags with twist ties or the integrated drawstrings that some trash bags have.

• Tie bags together if they are all light in weight.

• Place trash within one foot of the road so that it’s within easy reach.

• Dispose of your pet’s waste inside the closed trash bag.

• Put trash out at the curb by 10:00 am - Pick-up time varies within the park.

• Do not mix household trash with organic yard debris or construction materials.

• Do not put trash out at night because by morning it will have been scattered by wild animals.

Please do not allow pets to urinate on trash or debris. The crew has to pick this up!

• Also be aware that if you place your trash out on the street too early, the vultures think you have prepared them a sack lunch - and the result is not always pretty!

Clearing Vegetation on CSA Property

Our Declaration of Covenants states that “No CSA land may be cleared of any vegetation without prior written permission from the Board of Directors or its designee. Unauthorized clearing of CSA property will result in a hearing, with possible fines and ordered replanting.” This only makes sense, as you would not cut vegetation on someone else’s property without permission first. In order to track this better, we will require anyone seeking permission to cut vegetation on CSA property to fill out an ARC permit. An approved permit must include the CSA manager’s signature, and a copy of the permit will be filed in your ARC file for documentation purposes.

Getting to Know Our TGO CSA Maintenance Crews

The maintenance crews here in TGO are the best of the best and an extremely hard working group! In the coming editions of The Happenings we thought we would spend some time getting to know more about them and what they do.

Phillip Wolfe and Lucas Hapeman work together as a team in the area of drainage and aquatics.

Phillip lives in Titusville with his girlfriend Becca and their 4-year-old twin girls and 11-year-old daughter. He is originally from South Carolina where he worked in construction and found his passion for working with drainage issues. In 2008 he moved to Florida and worked for TGO for about a year. Life took him away for a bit, but he returned in 2017 and has been working with the maintenance team ever since. He enjoys working on cars and frequenting the shooting range in his spare time (if he has any!) He loves traveling, especially to Atlantic City and visiting family in New York, Texas, and Alabama. Phillip is the “baby” of the with three brothers and one sister all older than him.

Lucas originally hails from northern New York where his family owned a dairy farm where they would milk up to 100 cows a day. The farm was handed down through the family for six generations before finally succumbing to modernization and family members moving on to different interests. He is the middle child having a young brother and an older sister. Lucas worked a variety of jobs before settling down with the TGO maintenance crew. In 2011 he came to Florida on vacation and decided it was a good place to be. In 2017, he was invited by a friend to come down when the golf course he was working for changed

ownership and Lucas needed a change in his own life. He loves to hike and also enjoys detailing vehicles.

As for what they do with and for TGO - We were reminded how important the upkeep in this area is when we had not one, but two hurricanes impact our community this past year. A typical day for them starts by going throughout the park checking the drainage ditches and the storm drains to make sure they are clear. Keeping the drainage ditches clean can require anything from removing branches and raking out leaves and debris, to digging out collected mud and killing off weeds that might be clogging the drainage process. Storm drains must be kept clear of leaves and debris for proper drainage, fortunately many residents help with this process by regularly checking drains on their property before and after storms. They will also assist the irrigation crews when asked, whether it be digging holes or anything else that is needed. -

Contractors employed for repairs, construction, renovation, or installation at residences that are in The Great Outdoors are not allowed to work on Sunday, except in an emergency or with the advance permission of the CSA. From Monday through Saturday, contractors must leave TGO by 6:00 pm from October 1 to April 30 and by 7:00 pm from May 1 to September 30.

Automated Visitor Call-In - 321-383-8802

The automated system offers two methods to provide access for a visitor. Call no more than 24 hours prior to your visitor’s arrival. Send an email to: guest@tgocsa.org, no more than 48 hours prior to your visitor’s arrival. The phone number and email address you use must already be registered with the CSA Office for the access request to be accepted. This system cannot confirm that your request was received or respond to any additional messages.

The CSA has a contract with Spectrum that includes Spectrum TV Select and Spectrum Internet services. If you are experiencing problems with their service or need to set up a new service, call the number above. Tell them your community at The Great Outdoors has a bulk agreement known as the Bronze Package.

Our television channel of the Community Services Association will be active for broadcasting board meetings. Your TV must be equipped with a Spectrum TV cable box or digital adapter.

Vehicle Barcodes

If your vehicle needs a barcode installed, call the CSA Office at 321-268-9767 to schedule a REQUIRED appointment. Barcodes are $10 - new or replacement. They install them everyday, but will not do “walk-in” applications. If you need a barcode installed on your Recreational Vehicle, they’ll install RV barcodes on Fridays ONLY, and they want to visit your home or RV site to hopefully complete that barcode installation without moving your RV.

TruGreen regularly applies spray applications to our lawns and common areas that includes an herbicide for weed control, a liquid fertilizer, and an insecticide to kill chinch bugs, and other turf-damaging insects. These application dates for the first quarter of 2023 are:

TruGreen is also offering “service-call” visits to TGO. If you are still having problems with lawn pests or weeds, call the CSA Office at 321-268-9767, and we will put your address on the TruGreen list.

TruGreen advises all TGO residents to stay off treated areas of your lawn, and to keep your pets off treated areas, until the application has thoroughly dried.

AED Basics (Automated External Defibrillator) Have Someone Call 9-1-1 While You Operate AED

The Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is a portable electronic device that diagnoses incorrect heart rhythm patterns that could potentially be life threatening. The device treats the condition with electrical shocks.

AED use requires minimal training because an electronic voice prompts the user through each step. If you are helping a person who collapsed and you’re unsure if a heart attack is the reason, don’t hesitate to use the AED. Every minute counts.

The device determines if the patient needs an electrical shock or not. Simply place the AED pads on the patient’s bare skin, one on the right upper chest and the other on their lower left side. No one else should be touching the patient because false readings could result. The AED will advise you, the device operator, what to do next.

TGO has seven AEDs located at CSA buildings.

You may have responded by developing Firewise knowledge and attitudes and actions that can be applied to your other community up north. Now you may want to expand your wildfire knowledge base. Before you depart The Great Outdoors for the season, take a critical look at your property. Is the roof clear of dried pine needles and leaves? How about gutters and downspouts? Is the “30-foot defensible zone” around your property clear of flammable dry palm fronds, fallen branches and leaves? Are trees in the zone clear of branches up to 8 feet off the ground? We’re talking about “ladder fuels” that can lead a fire to your roof line and the tree tops! Vines that climb your trees are in the same category and should be cut down. If these things have not been attended to, it might be wise to delay your departure and take care of them yourself or hire a property maintenance professional to clean your property up to Firewise standards.

When you get back to your other home and community, the same standards may apply. It’s just one more maintenance task that needs to be addressed. Remember, your concern should be for your community and the WUI (Wildland Urban Interface). This is the critical area where your summer home and the wildlands may share common space. If you live in yet another wildfire danger zone, perhaps you and your northern neighbors could start a local FIREWISE PROGRAM for that community. TGO Firewise could help.

The Purple Martins

Exactly What Are Those Strange Looking Bulbs by Lake Judy? Why, they’re Purple Martin houses, of course! Purple Martins are native songbirds that belong to the swallow family. They are long time favorites for their skillful aerial exhibitions and graceful flight, their social antics, and pleasant twittering. However, their insect eating habits are definitely the most beneficial aspect to the human population! Interestingly, martins are aerial insectivores – meaning they eat insects on the fly and also scoop water from ponds/streams and drink midair. They are guessed to eat over 250 billion insects a year.

What else is there to know about Purple Martins?

Glad you asked:

• They are about 7 ½ inches in length

• Weigh about 1.97 ounces

• They only fly during the day

• Martins mate for life

• The males protect their territory rather fiercely and the females will attack other females

• They fly up to about 40 mph

• The males are an iridescent purple with dark bellies with the females and young being duller in color

• Their lifespan is typically 1-2 years, however the oldest on record was 13 years – it was banded in 1933 and found again in 1947 in Illinois where it was originally banded!

Purple Martins “snowbird” in South America, typically the Amazon rainforest in the winter. They migrate to North America (most states and some of Canada with the exception of most mountain states). The birds will nest and breed in colonies and typically return to their former nesting area year after year. Mid-January is usually when the first “scouts” (which are really the older birds returning to their former nesting area) will begin to return in the Southern-most states. They roost together until late summer after the chicks leave the nest.

Eggs are usually laid in clutches of about four to six and, even though they are laid one egg per day, they typically all hatch within 48 hours. Unlike some other species, only the female will incubate the eggs. Their main predators include

hawks, owls, raccoons,snakes, and squirrels.

Traditionally Martins would nest in Woodpecker holes, dead trees, etc., but due to non-native birds such as House Sparrows and European Starlings, and also habitat loss, they are almost entirely dependent on human supplied housing. The Native Americans would hang dried gourds in trees to provide them nesting houses. Thus, the many Purple Martin gourd housing colonies you see today. With so many birds nesting in one area, when they fly, they are in such dense gatherings that at times they can be seen on weather radar!

Donna Pittman

Donna Pittman has served as Vice President of the Board since Dolly Akers recruited her in 2022 (of course, her previous experience serving on several BODs might have helped). She retired from her law enforcement job in 2010.

Donna hails from central Illinois, where she was born and raised. She graduated from the University of Illinois in 1973 and married her career Air Force husband, Paul, the same year.After living in Texas for a couple of years, he was transferred to the Tampa Bay area, where they settled.

Being avid sailors, they have owned a total of eight boats and have extensively traveled the Florida coastline, Bahamas, and other destinations. Taking a break at one point from sailing (life happens), her dad suggested they get an RV and took them on a “field trip” to Tampa’s Lazy Days, and the RV’ing bug bit! Seven RV’s and almost every state visited later, oh the fun they’ve had! They first began visiting TGO in 1994, but in 2020, as they met friends here, COVID reared its ugly head. They stayed well beyond the original four planned days, eventually moving part-time onto Oak Cove in their RV. It wasn’t until Paul “gently” persuaded Donna to visit a Tuesday Open House “tour” that they made the fulltime move across the peninsula to TGO in October 2021. Their first memorable experience in moving to TGO happened when their dog, Badger, got lost, and they were introduced to Sandy Juba, who brought an “army” of volunteers who made sure Badger returned safely and got to enjoy his new home. Pat Dick

Pat Dick currently serves as the Secretary of the Board. With her past experience of working as a secretary for AETNA, she was the perfect candidate for that position! Along with husband Jim, she retired in 1995, bought an RV and began their travelling “career.”

Pat grew up in Connecticut and actually went to kindergarten with her husband. She dated him for a bit during high school and then Jim left to join the Navy. When he came home on leave they had a whirlwind two week romance, he proposed, and they were married in 1964. They have two children. Their son Jim is a 30 year Navy veteran and their daughter Shari passed away from cancer in 2014. She loves to sing and not only sang in her church choir, but with a local group called Sweet Adelines. They thoroughly enjoyed driving around in their 1960 Chevy Impala with the red and white houndstooth interior - Summer Delight. She and Jim also volunteered at Storyland in New Hampshire where Jim ran the train and Pat had the pleasure of greeting the children as Mother Goose (coincidently, another person in TGO held the same position - small world!)

They sold their house in Connecticut in 1998, traveled full time in their RV for a time, all the while making many good friends along the way. One of Pat’s fondest memories was spending six summers in Yellowstone working in the bookstore, right by Old Faithful. In 1999, friends living in TGO invited them to visit, and they loved it so much they ended up buying a lot on Oak Cove. After Jim passed in August of 2020, Pat decided to move to a park model (something they had discussed doing) and moved onto Sunset. She loves decorating, so having a new place has kept her very busy.

Besides her decorating, Pat keeps busy playing shuffleboard and Bunco. She has also enjoyed being in the Variety Show several times (her love for singing comes in very handy). Pat also works tirelessly with the Nature Center, whether it is working at the markets or helping to fix up and restore the center itself!

Loretta Anné

Loretta Anné has the vital job as Treasurer for the Nature Center. Although, she has held various other positions on the board for almost every year since its inception. Born and raised in Michigan, she had one brother and one sister and claims to be the “spoiled” child - or as she put it, “I’d just ask Grandma and I’d get it.” She and her husband, Ed, (of almost 48 years), met at church where she was the choir director. Her funniest church story was how dark the practice room was, making it difficult to read the music, so one day she came to practice and found a hard hat with a candle on top provided by Ed! They eloped to Las Vegas and became a blended family with Ed’s two daughters. Today their family has grown to include the girls’ husbands, four grandkids, and three great-grandkids.

Loretta’s was a teacher in both elementary and middle school, and her passion was in science, which instigated their move to the Space Coast of Florida. Here, she and husband were volunteers with the Space Coast Council Navy League. They were fortunate to be able to coordinate volunteers for the shuttles, the first time from a trailer at the Astronaut Hall of Fame office in the freezing cold. She served with the League as their President, Vice President, and produced their newsletter.

Owning an RV since 1980, they bought a lot in TGO in 1996 and a house in 2006, living as snowbirds until 2008 when they moved here permanently. One of their best trips was in 2015 with other TGO residents on a Western Caravan to several National Parks. Loretta has been very active in the TGO church serving as the photographer, live streaming services, making videos for memorials, and participating in the handbell and singing choirs. She is most proud of producing the Salute to the Veterans every year around Veterans Day.

Besides playing tennis, she loves to garden, and because she was once an accomplished seamstress, she joined the quilters group about a year ago. Loretta also enjoys their two Samoyed dogs, Jasmine (13 ½) and Rosie (1 ½), and their cat, Snuggles (11).

The TGO Quilters made 58 Fidget Quilts for Hospice, Joe’s Place, Titusville Methodist Church and the Alura Memory Care in Rockledge. A Fidget quilt is a lap quilt that helps provide stimulation for the hands of Alzheimer’s, Dementia and Autistic people. It soothes their busy hands and stimulates their senses. Lovebugs 101 - Interesting Facts

It’s almost that time - Lovebug Season!

Once they’re here, they appear to be all over the place, blanketing the state of Florida. The truth is - they are actually flies with an orange dot - officially known as the Plecia Nearctica Hardy. They get their nickname from their inflight mating process. Are they a nuisance? You bet they are! And massively annoying when they accumulate in large numbers.

They make their bi-annual visits in late April/May and September/ October. You can’t predict exactly when they will arrive, but you’ll definitely know when they do. One of the key determining factors is how much rainfall our state or region has received. Our area has been in a bit of a drought and experts claim the less rain, the fewer bugs. We may be lucky this time around as we all know we definitely could use some more rain.

With some research, you will find there is a lot to learn about Florida’s favorite insect. Here are some facts we gleaned from the Internet.

How long do these love making machines live?

The male lovebugs live for two to five days and females live for up to seven. In their short lifespan, adult lovebugs live long enough to mate, feed, disperse, and lay a batch of eggs.

Are they only found in Florida?

Lovebugs are actually common across the Gulf states; Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida, according to a study by the University of Florida, IFAS Extension. They’ve also been spotted in Georgia and South Carolina. It’s possible that their movement is caused by prevailing winds, traffic, sod transport, and expansion of pastures.

Do Lovebugs eat mosquitos?

Sorry, no, this is a myth! Lovebugs are herbivorous insects that consume pollen and nectar found in flowers. Without jaws, grasping legs, or speed, they would have a hard time chasing down a mosquito. Contrary to rumors, the University of Florida did not create Lovebugs to control mosquitoes.

Do Lovebugs mate the entire time they’re coupled?

As male lovebugs form swarms above emergence areas (areas where there is little to no wind and vegetation), the female lovebugs may join the swarm before they are grasped by a male lovebug. The sperm transfer requires an average of 12.5 hours, but the two can be coupled for days before parting ways. If separated, both sexes may mate again.

Where did these lovemaking flying insects originate?

According to several sources, Lovebugs originated in the Yucatan Peninsula and expanded their reach into the Caribbean and the Gulf states in the 1940s before arriving in Florida around 1950. From there, the population exploded.

Are Lovebugs attracted to cars?

If you own a white car it seems like they are, but Lovebugs are supposedly not attracted to your cars, but they are attracted to the car’s exhaust. They’re also attracted to heat. According to IFAS, they fly one to five feet from the ground (the same height as your windshield and grill on your car!) during warm periods of the day, usually between 10 am to 6 pm.

How damaging are they to your car?

You don’t want to leave splattered Lovebug remains on your car more than a day. That white splatter they leave on your car is their eggs. Left to dry in the hot sun, the splatter turns into something similar to industrial glue. Their remains are acidic and will slowly destroy your coat and paint. (See Sidebar to right)

Do Lovebugs have any natural enemies?

Apparently Lovebugs adults are avoided by red imported fire ants, and other predators, but are periodically eaten by spiders, dragonflies, and birds. Their coloration implies defensive mimicry which may protect them from other predators. Bee keepers have reported that honeybees do not visit flowers infested with lovebugs.

Do Lovebugs have any value?

Yes...these pesky insects lay their eggs in places with dying vegetation, such as thatch, which is the cut grass spit out by lawn mowers. That’s where immature Lovebugs live and eat. Feeding on dead vegetation redistributes essential nutrients back into the ground, which benefits plants and the environment.

A wet winter enables the bugs to thrive in the caterpillar stage. The larvae are able to move on the soil surface and respond to soil moisture. As pupae, they can withstand long periods of drought. Strong seasonal rains produce strong Lovebug seasons.

Unlike some of their close relatives, Lovebugs do not bite, sting, or transmit diseases and are not poisonous.

Lovebugs 101 - Interesting Facts

Lovebug Reproduction Process.

Lovebug reproductive behavior occurs within three general activity periods during the day. The first period (8 am–2 pm) begins with the insects moving up onto the plants and feeding on nectar. Lovebug flight is initiated when the air temperature reaches about 68°F. Mating begins when swarms of 40 plus males form above the emergence sites, oscillating up and down rhythmically sometimes more than 20 feet above the ground, even on windy days. These swarms last 10 to 30 minutes and end with the males eventually landing to rest or feed. Swarming peaks at about 10-11 am and again at 6-8 pm. Individual females fly into a swarm and are grasped almost immediately by a male, after which the pair lands on vegetation to mate. Males and females often will disengage and mate a second time. Lovebugs do not fly during the night. After a pair disperses, the male dies and the female deposits as many as 600 eggs under decaying leaves or grass before also dying.

• Lovebugs are only active in the daylight and are much less mobile during the early and late daytime hours.

• They do not sting or bite.

• They are also known as honeymoon flies, double-headed bugs, and kissing bugs.

• The adult insects feed on plant nectar, especially sweet clover, goldenrod and Brazilian pepper.

• They are drawn to highways by hot engines, exhaust and the vibrations of vehicles.

• Heat, light-colored surfaces and other engines also attract them.

• Due to their abundance and mobility, Lovebugs cannot be controlled effectively with poisons or repellents.

• They have become less abundant over the past 30 years.

Lovebugs Vehicle Tips From Autotrader:

• Wash and wax your vehicle before lovebug season begins. Car wax adds a protective layer between your vehicle’s paint and the acid from the Lovebug guts.

• Debris on your headlights and windshield can reduce visibility - Keep them clean!

• Remove them as quickly as possible.

• Use a pressure washer to remove the big clumps.

• Use microfiber cloths or a soft netted sponge (with some soap) to wash away the dried remains. Moistened dryer sheets help rub off the bugs from car surfaces. You can also use a clay bar, which removes baked-on bugs. Clay bar is a synthetic plastic putty that physically pulls embedded dirt out of your car’s paintwork. You’ll find these on Amazon.

• Avoid oily options like baby oil, degreaser, and cooking spray. They won’t help get rid of the Lovebugs and instead will streak your car.

• Consider fitting your vehicle’s hood with an air deflector or bug guard. It could help divert some of the flies.

• Use a bug screen or protective netting across the front end of your car to keep Lovebugs away from the engine’s air intake. Temporary mesh netting can be found at automotive supply stores and is simple to install

• You might want to consider a ceramic coating or other car protection film for your vehicle.

• If you don’t remove the bug masses after a period of time, your car’s finish could end up stained or otherwise harmed.

• If you wonder whether car insurance will cover Lovebug paint damage, it will not. Even with full coverage, Lovebug damage is considered cosmetic. Car warranties also do not cover this type of damage.

Meet Martha and Ed Henderson

Volunteers Extraordinaire!

My conversation with Martha was both endearing and hilariously funny! The first thing she told me was that her husband Ed brought her here kicking and screaming! She said, “I don’t want to live in a camper in a place with old people.” Well, that didn’t last very long because, although Ed loved it from beginning, it didn’t take Martha long to realize that while maybe she didn’t want to live in a Class C, TGO might not be so bad. She started making friends and realized that she and Ed loved to play games, and there were plenty to be played here. Her “ah-ha” moment came when she walked outside and there was nothing but blue sky. In West Virginia, they had gray skies from October to May and here it was blue year round - she was soon a very happy camper. Having grown up in a small town in West Virginia with one sister, Martha went to a small state college where she met her wonderful husband of now 56 years. Although, Ed had to win over her mother since he was an “outsider” - he was from Tennessee! They have three children and eight grandchildren, all of whom live in Charlotte, NC, which makes it easy for them to spend the summer with their family. While Ed worked with Ohio Power, Martha was a 2nd grade teacher. As her children came along, Martha took a break from teaching, figuring she would get back to it when her children were older, but instead turned to substitute teaching, which turned out to be very rewarding.

Because of their work they were honored with the distinction of being designated a “Relay for Life” Community and a sign proudly hangs at the entrance to TGO. After Pat passed away in 2016 and the dreaded COVID shutdowns set in, it put an end to the luncheons.

Martha has also worked with TGO’s Forever Friends Society which did many charitable projects such as making over 80 “Boo-Boo” dolls for the Nemours Children’s Hospital in Orlando.

She is very proud of the fact that she works with the Nature Center Flea Markets making “Baskets for Nature” to raffle off and also sits on the NC Social Committee. And she prides herself on always being the top “Tip Jar” collection winner at the markets!

After retiring, they began traveling in their Class C RV - visiting everywhere including Alaska, Canada, New England, the West, and the Southwest, but, ironically, never Florida. Thinking that they needed a steady place for the winter months, they thought about either Arizona or Florida and decided to stay in each for three months. Having found TGO in the Woodall Camping Directory, Ed was smitten from the beginning. In less than a month, they took a walk, bought a lot on Lake Drive and picked out the park home they wanted. Martha and Ed have been living and volunteering here in TGO since 1998.

If names were put into the definition of volunteering, it would certainly include Martha and Ed Henderson! Oh, where to begin??? Here, in TGO alone, they have worked with the Activities Committee, volunteered with the Nature Center, and the TGO church and St. Christopher’s. They both worked BINGO nights, with Ed calling numbers and Martha assisting the winners.

Martha’s sister and her husband, Pat and Dude Peel, moved here in 2002. Martha and Pat (a cancer survivor) started a Cancer Survivor Luncheon, raising money for it by selling candy and hosting a craft table, with the surplus going to the American Can-

Martha has been a part of the quilters group for 20 years (it holds a special place in her heart!) They have been involved in so many different projects:

• Made 58 fidget quilts for memory care patients

• Made lap quilts for seniors and nap quilts for kindergarteners

• Held a baby shower for BETA

• Made honor quilts for the military

• Made bed quilts for the Veteran’s Home

• For Meals-on-Wheels, they made 180 placemats given with each Christmas meal one year and 80 lap quilts given as Christmas gifts with the meals another year.

Not to be left out, Ed collects manufacturer coupons to be sent overseas to our military to use in their commissaries. He has collected over 6 ½ million dollars worth over 14 years. Having served in the Army, he has been invited on an Honor Flight on April 22 with his son going along as his guardian.

Martha stated she has enjoyed everything she has done and doesn’t turn much down...she just loves people and TGO. She also confided in me that it would take a lot of kicking and screaming for her to leave TGO! - Editorial and photo by Sharon Maloney

Funny Thing Is…

April is a most incredible month. The flowers are blooming, winter is over, the beaches are full of sunbathers, the golf courses are packed, spring, love and baseball are in the air, and everyone is happy. But there is a dark side to April. There is one day in that month when rich people wish they were poor. When couples who don’t want kids wish they had 20. When the most successful entrepreneurs wish they worked in the window at McDonald’s. Yes, for one day in April the whole country acts like schizophrenic Dr. Hydes wishing all the success they’ve experienced the other 364 days of the year didn’t happen.

So, what is it that brings the most powerful, creative and enterprising people in the United States to their knees? April 15th, tax day. What were they thinking, putting the worst day of the year right in the middle of the best month? How ironic is it that tax day is in the month started by April Fools Day? Was it an April Fools day joke gone bad? I’ve heard only two types of people complain about taxes, men and women. Have you ever done your own taxes? If you try to cure a case of hemorrhoids with a blowtorch, it’s a little less painful and in the same anatomical area. Consider this. The tax system is so complicated that lawyers hire other people to do their taxes for them. Ever wonder why depreciation is so close to depression? Tax anxiety. If you send every penny you earn from January 1 to April 24 to the IRS, you can keep what you earn the rest of the year. That’s why they call April 24 Tax Freedom Day. And finally, do you know why your property tax is paid at the end of the year? Because when they were trying to decide where tax payments belong, someone jokingly said “In arrears.” Not making it up. I quote from the real estate manual: “Taxes are paid in arrears.” April 15th can be so taxing.

New Law May Offer Financial Opportunities

Outside events can affect your financial strategies. And that may be the case with the recent passage of legislation known as the SECURE 2.0 Act.

For example, in your 401(k) or similar plan, you can now take your employer’s contributions on a Roth basis. While these contributions will count as taxable income, they can eventually be withdrawn, along with any earnings they generate, tax free, provided you meet certain conditions.

Here’s another change: You now must start taking withdrawals (RMDs) from your traditional IRA and 401(k) at 73, instead of 72. In 2033, this age will increase to 75. These new age limits may give you more flexibility in planning your retirement income.

And if you’re a business owner, you can now get a startup tax credit covering 100%- up from 50% - of the administrative costs of opening a 401(k) plan, up to $5,000 for each of the first three years of the plan.

The SECURE 2.0 Act contains many other elements, so you may want to consult with your tax and financial professionals to determine how you might be affected by the new law’s provisions - and how you could take advantage of them.
